LINCOLNVILLE IS FOCUS OF HISTORY OF AFRICAN AMERICANS

As the world focuses on February as Black History Month, in Lincolnville, SC, every day is a celebration of Black excellence and history. The parcels of land that sit on the border of Charleston and Dorchester Counties as the nucleus of surrounding Summerville and Ladson subdivisions are an extraordinary gem of American history.

Like the pristine waters of the ebb and flowing creeks from the Ashley River through Lincolnville, the town’s journey travels through many eras of American History. The Charleston-Hamburg Railway was the longest track of rail (136 miles) in the world when it was completed in 1833. The Charleston-Hamburg Railway ran straight through Pump Pond, which would be renamed ‘Lincolnville’ by Bishop Cain 34 years later. On October 3, 1832, these rail tracks carried the first steam engine locomotive as well as the first passenger train in America. The train ran from Line Street in Charleston to Summerville. Today, the history of the pre-Civil War, innovative railway system can be heard thundering

through Lincolnville four times daily 191 years later.

The Charleston-Hamburg Railway was central to the growth of South Carolina’s economy in the 1800s; and vital transportation for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. No doubt the builders of these tracks and locomotive operators were enslaved men who perhaps lay at-rest in Lincolnville’s historical cemeteries, namely Bible Sojourn and Hamburg

Two years after the Civil War ended and the beginning of the Reconstruction Era, Lincolnville was founded in 1867 and incorporated in 1887, making it one of the oldest African American towns in the State of South Carolina. The town’s founder, Bishop Richard Harvey Cain, was among the first elected African Americans from South Carolina to the US House of Representatives in 1872 during Reconstruction. It would be 98 years later in 1970, during the Civil Rights Era when Herbert U. Fielding would become the first African American elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives since the Reconstruction Era.

Herbert Fielding, son of Julius and Sadie Fielding, spent many of his childhood days in Lincolnville at his family home. His father, founder of Fielding Home for Funerals in Charleston purchased land and built a home in Lincolnville. Located on the corner of Dunmeyer Hill Road and Lincoln Ave (across from the Community Garden), the Fielding home was the gathering place for

many strategic meetings hosted by the Honorable Herbert Fielding for South Carolina Democratic members, including young Congressman James E. Clyburn, now serving in the US House of Representatives as the Assistant Democratic Leader. One of the many crown jewels of history in Lincolnville is the Rosenwald School, now operating as the Charles Ross Municipal Building located at 141 W. Broad Street.  Julius Rosenwald, son of a German immigrant who rose to become president of Sears & Roebuck in 1908 partnered with his dear friend Booker T. Washington, Founding President of Tuskegee University, to build schools throughout the South for African American children. During the Jim Crow Era, education was not provided for African American children in the rural South. Julius Rosenwald provided funds for over 5,357 school buildings – one of those schools was Lincolnville Elementary School built in 1923.

CONGRESSWOMEN JOIN IN TRIBUTE TO COLLEAGUE

Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE) and Congresswomanelect Jennifer McClellan (VA-4) joined environmental justice leaders, public health advocates, faith leaders, and friends in paying tribute to the late U.S. Representative Donald McEachin for his tireless work on behalf of Virginians and his legacy of environmental justice leadership in Congress and throughout his life.  “I am just so humbled to be here celebrating my friend. We do this work for this moment, but we also do it for the future—the beautiful future that we’re building on his legacy,” Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE) said speaking to the standing-room-only gathering. “He made sure that the Virginia coastlines were protected against offshore drilling. He made sure that we got the lead out of our pipes and our schools, and in our homes. Air quality monitoring—he and I worked together on that legislation.”

Congresswoman-elect Jennifer McClellan (VA-4), who previously won McEachin’s open state senate seat, said, “I cannot be prouder than to succeed for the second time Donald McEachin. Two of the proudest moments for him were the Environmental Justice for All Act, and he was instrumental in ensuring that the Inflation Reduction Act had historic investments in clean energy and climate action. He understood

that clean energy is not only good for the environment, but it is good for our economy.”

In recognition of Congressman McEachin’s legacy, event cohost Dream.Org awarded two environmental advocates from Virginia’s 4th Congressional District for their community-based work with the inaugural “Donald McEachin Dream.Org Climate Action Award.” Recipients include: La’Veesha Allen Rollins and Rev. Wayne Henley, founding members of C5-Concerned Citizens of Charles City County

To honor the family’s request, the tribute hosts also contributed $3,000.00 to the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology of Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia, the theological school the late congressman attended.

CELEBRATING W O MEN'S HISTORY MONTH +

SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM FEATURES BLACK WOMEN IN HISTORY

In honor of Women’s History Month, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture’s (NMAAHC) March programming features events with prominent Black women in the arts and entertainment industry. To kick off the month, businesswoman and former chairman and CEO of BET Debra Lee discusses the joys and challenges of being a Black woman executive in the entertainment industry in a conversation about her new memoir, I Am Debra Lee

The museum will also host a dialogue featuring artists Deborah Willis, Amy Sherald and Bisa Butler centering on portraiture of African American women and social justice.

Later in the month, the museum will debut a major, thought-provoking new exhibition, “Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures,” March 24. Investigating Afrofuturist expression through art, music, activism and more, this exhibition explores and reveals Afrofuturism’s historic and poignant engagement with African American history and popular culture. From the enslaved looking to the cosmos for freedom to popular sci-fi stories inspiring Black astronauts, to the musical influence of Sun Ra, OutKast, P-Funk and more, this exhibition covers the broad and impactful spectrum of Afrofuturism.

“Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures” will be on view in the museum’s Bank of America Special Exhibitions Gallery from March 24 through March 24, 2024. In her recent memoir, Debra Lee explores the joys and challenges of being a high-powered Black woman executive in the entertainment industry. As the woman who brought television shows like The Game and Being Mary Jane to cable television, Lee has been responsible for elevating Black images and storytelling for decades.

In I Am Debra Lee, the author shares her own story in an intimate and eye-opening tale about her career in entertainment. Spring STEM Teacher Workshop: Contributions in Agriculture

 Saturday, March 25; 9 a.m.–2 p.m. (second-floor classrooms)

NMAAHC invites all interested third–eighth-grade educators to register for a half-day, in-person workshop led by NMAAHC STEM Education Specialist Christopher Williams. Participants will learn about the agricultural contributions of African Americans and discover the inventions and strategies they used to produce food for themselves and their communities. Participants will explore NMAAHC’s collections, discover the history of rice cultivation in the United States, engage

in STEM activities for the classroom and understand the ways African American farmers continue to reclaim their place in the agricultural world. Those who complete the workshop will be eligible to receive five hours of teacher professional development credit. Admission is free; however, registration is required.

History Alive!: Tuskegee Airmen: African American Aviators During World War II

 Saturday, March 25; 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 1 p.m. (Colin Powell Double Victory: The African American Military Gallery)

The Tuskegee Airmen were African American aviators who earned the right to fly combat during World War II. The Tuskegee Experience encompassed more than just the pilots—some were Caucasian and some were women. Visitors can learn about their experiences, their legacy and why their story is important today. John McCaskill, NMAAHC’s living-history interpreter, shares how those engaged in the military made their service useful not only for the good of their country, but also to benefit their personal lives and their community.

Virtual Cooking Demo and Conversation With Chef Jonny Rhodes

The public can virtually join Chef Jonny Rhodes of Food Fight Farms and Broham Soul Food & Groceries and Ashley Young, Ph.D., historian of the

American Food History Project at the NMAAHC, for a cooking demonstration and lively discussion about the stories food can tell of how communities intersected in the past. Rhodes is heavily influenced by the history of his hometown of Houston and has made it his mission to bring awareness to past injustices and how African Americans can be better equipped to live a selfsustaining lifestyle.   Food Fight Farms grows fresh produce with the specific intent of processing those goods into shelf-stable foods. The menu will showcase items that have been grown from seed and manufactured into products such as pickles, preserves, condiments and more. Registration is $20 and meal kit ingredients will be shipped frozen overnight to participants.

HUMANITY COLLECTIVE RECEIVES AWARD FOR CIVIL RIGHTS WORK

Affirming its commitment to amplifying social justice issues through strategic and creative communications, Humanity Communications Collective announced it was selected as a 2023 Anthem Awards winner.

HCC was awarded a Bronze award in the Human & Civil Rights category for their work with the Bring Sundiata Acoli Home Alliance in 2022. HCC led a comprehensive communications approach to bring Black Panther Sundiata Acoli home last year. Acoli, 85, had been incarcerated since 1973 and was repeatedly denied parole for more than 24 years, violating New Jersey law. HCC strategically and methodically told the story of his humanity and key tenets of the law and created a compelling and nuanced narrative around the law's intent, justice and civil rights.

Over the 9-month project, HCC:

 Generated 1,268 social media posts with 1.9 million impressions, with a 544% engagement increase across social platforms.

 Secured 763 media articles reaching an audience of 11.4 million.

 Increased website visits by 400%.

 Increased email subscription rates by 52% and open rates to 44%.

 Drove the online petition calling for Sundiata's release to more than 20,000 signatures.

In May 2022, Sundiata Acoli was granted parole and released after nearly 50 years of incarceration.

“While the true honor of this work was the rightful and just release of Sundiata Acoli, we are overjoyed by this international recognition and the esteemed group HCC joins,” said HCC CEO Yanira Castro. “Our goal was to galvanize support for Sundiata and encourage the state to faithfully discharge the law - even when it may not be popular. This is what social justice is all about; holding an unwavering commitment to speaking out and demanding equity for all, without exception. We all must move together to free the rest of our political prisoners. Now.”

The Anthem Awards was launched in response to the prevalence that social good has taken within the national conversation and cultural zeitgeist in recent years. Women have truly come a long way. There was a time when women couldn’t vote, own property, join the military, or even wear pants. But times are changing and women are breaking the glass ceiling each and every day.

We have seen Black women accomplish many firsts; from Madam C.J. Walker, first Black woman to be a self-made millionaire to Ella Fitzgerald, the first Black woman to win a Grammy, we were trailblazers paving the way for others to dream big, and many did just that. Sistas like The Honorable Kamala Harris, the first woman and the first Black Vice President of the United States; and The

Honorable Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman United States Supreme Court Justice, have not only achieved tremendous success, they have forever shattered the glass ceiling in our nation.
