The Biden-Harris Administration has unveiled their latest plan to deliver student debt cancellation for those impacted by the nation's growing crisis. The plan, which comes as a result of the recently closed Negotiated Rulemaking process, is expected to provide much-needed relief to 30 million Americans grappling with insurmountable debt.

NAACP Director of Youth & College, Wisdom Cole, who served as sole civil rights negotiator during the Negotiated Rulemaking process, released the following statement in reaction to today's news:

"The NAACP has been proud to represent Black America in fighting for the rightful relief due to our community. Make no mistake, from the polls to the President's desk, young people have ensured that our rallying cries echo throughout the halls of power. It is a proud moment to see our collective, years-long advocacy culminate in millions of Americans being unshackled from the chains of student debt.

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) proudly unveils a ground-breaking collaboration with the University of Oxford to establish a CBCF Alumni Scholarship, a transformative initiative aimed at closing the financial gap for Black students aspiring to pursue master’s degrees at the prestigious institution.

Tony Bishop, a distinguished CBCF fellowship alumnus from the class of 2018, conceived the scholarship to address the challenges faced by individuals like himself, who possess immense academic and professional potential but encounter financial constraints hindering their pursuit of elite educational opportunities. Bishop, having been accepted into the University of Oxford’s Diplomatic Studies program in 2019, was unable to accept his place due to financial limitations. Determined to pave the way for future generations, he initiated the CBCF Alumni Scholarship to empower young Black scholars and dismantle financial barriers.

Bishop, who is now a White House Advisor based in Washington, D.C. found the allies to secure the partnership after attending one of the university’s executive programs where he met the President of Oxford’s Magdalen College, Dinah Rose KC Rose commented, “We are delighted to be working with Tony and the CBCF on this exciting new initiative,

BLACK CAUCUS PARTNERS WITH OXFORD

which will provide generous financial support to help talented students from the widest possible pool to access the opportunities that Magdalen and Oxford can offer.”

The partnership between Tony Bishop and CBCF was solidified with the enthusiastic support of CBCF President and CEO Nicole Austin-Hillery and Senior Vice President of Resource Development Donna FisherLewis who oversees the CBCF’s Leadership Institute. Austin-Hillery remarked, “This scholarship comes at a crucial time when opportunities for Black students face challenges. We are committed to closing the financial gap and restoring educational opportunities for Black students.”

The CBCF Alumni Scholarship is scheduled to launch in April 2024, with the first students attending Oxford in September 2025. The scholarship funding was made possible by a generous grant from the Open Society Foundation

WOMEN’S COUNSELING AND MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE INTRODUCED

Black Mental Health Canada (BMHC) and GreenShield proudly announce a collaborative effort to address the pressing need for culturally sensitive mental health support within the Black Canadian community. Recognizing the disparities Black women face in mental health care, this partnership introduces QUEENS: Quest to Unite, Empower, & Encourage Nubian Sisters. Through this initiative, BMHC and GreenShield aim to fill a crucial gap in mental health care, providing tailored support and resources to uplift and empower Black women across Canada. This ground-breaking initiative offers vital support through women’s counseling groups, addressing various topics including depression, anxiety, growth mindset, pre and post maternal care, meditation, self-care, parenting, and other much-needed areas within the community.

“We acknowledge the importance of culturally sensitive care, and QUEENS is

one example of how we are showing up to dismantle barriers hindering access to mental health support that speaks to our stressors and our lived experiences,” said Alice Wiafe, Team Leader at BMHC “Our objective is to create safe, inclusive spaces where Black women from all walks of life can come together to know others and be known - allowing themselves to be transparent and vulnerable - terms not often associated with the Black women. Unfortunately, we still live in a time where factors like stigma, misinformation, and feelings of shame still surround the topic of seeking help according to latest research.”

Group Counselling offers a transformative space where shared experiences are openly discussed, normalizing them and dispelling fears of isolation. Within this unique and nurturing environment, enriched by diverse perspectives specific to the Black Canadian community, individuals cultivate invaluable social support and develop interpersonal

skills. QUEENS stands out by prioritizing the empowerment and well-being of Black women, creating spaces that not only provide therapeutic support but also celebrate and uplift their identities and experiences.

“As a proudly Canadian non-profit, GreenShield champions better health for all Canadians, with a focus on bridging equity gaps through culturally appropriate solutions for under-served populations,” says Mandy Mail, Executive Vice President, Head of Marketing, Communications & GreenShield Cares “Through our Women’s Mental Health program, we’ve helped nearly 90,000 women access free mental health services. With like-minded organizations like Black Mental Health Canada, we’re expanding our impact and addressing the diverse and distinct needs of women of Black or African heritage. Through innovative programs like QUEENS, we’re building a future where every Canadian can reach their fullest health and well-being potential.”

GreenShield is on track to invest $75M in social impact programs to positively impact at least one million Canadian lives.

Part of this investment to date includes over $18.5M in mental health initiatives, providing complimentary mental health support to nearly 200,000 equity-seeking Canadians. With findings revealing that women from equity-seeking groups struggle more with their mental health, GreenShield focuses on providing support for people who identify as women, non-binary, and gender non-conforming.

QUEENS represents a significant step towards achieving mental health equity. BMHC and GreenShield remain committed to driving positive change and expanding access for Black women across Canada to have the support they need to thrive.

 ABOUT BLACK MENTAL HEALTH

CANADA (BMHC): Black Mental Health Canada (BMHC) is

a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and providing culturally sensitive support to individuals of Black and African heritage across Canada. Through advocacy, education, and community engagement, BMHC strives to address systemic barriers and promote mental wellness within the Black community.

GreenShield is an integrated health and benefits organization and the first organization in Canada to operate as a payer-provider — offering insurance, administering benefits, and paying claims as a 'payer' while offering health services such as mental health, pharmacy, and telemedicine services as a 'provider.' Integrating both sides of the payer-provider equation enables GreenShield to simplify access to care, remove administrative barriers, and improve health outcomes for its customers.

GreenShield is uniquely structured as a non-profit social enterprise that reinvests its earnings and redeploys its services to support equity-seeking Canadian communities via its social impact brand, GreenShield Cares. The company's overarching goal is to generate $75 million of social impact investments to improve the lives of at least 1 million Canadians by 2025, focusing on mental health, oral health, essential medicines, and chronic disease management.

As the industry's noble challenger, GreenShield continues to innovate, evolving its offerings and services to deepen its mission of Better Health for All.

GreenShield is comprised of three nonprofit entities: Green Shield Canada (GSC), Green Shield Association (GSA) and Green Shield Canada Foundation (GSCF), and GSA’s wholly owned subsidiaries, including Green Shield Health Inc. and Green Shield Administration Inc

CULTURE AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MUSEUM TO DISPLAY BLACK DESIGN

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture will open a new space in its Rhimes Family Foundation Visual Arts Gallery.

“Reclaiming My Time,” the first exhibition in the space devoted to contemporary Black designers, will open Friday, May 31. “Reclaiming My Time” will feature chairs and other work by designers who engage with ideas related to rest, repose and histories of labor and leisure. The space includes 15 objects from the museum’s collection, spanning seating, lighting, photography and graphic design. More details about this exhibition are available at nmaahc.si.edu/ reclaiming

“The rich history and ongoing excellence of Black design is one of the many aspects of Black culture we feature in the museum—and with this show that form of Black creativity is all the more highlighted for its artistry as well as its utility,” said Kevin Young, the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the museum. “Especially through highlighting our growing collection of seating designs, we are stressing the importance of taking time for rest and restoration. Our resilience and rejuvenation depend on our

ability to rest well.”

“Reclaiming My Time” connects the concepts of resistance and resilience found in the nearby

“Reckoning” art exhibition with rest in and among Black communities, featuring the display of carefully curated

seating and graphic material by contemporary Black designers. The exhibition is centered around 15 designers including Jomo Tariku, Gail Anderson and Norman Teague, whose work weaves new narratives into objects like chairs that are used daily. Through objects and images, “Reclaiming My Time” examines the role of rest as a necessary component of resilience.

Taken from a phrase popularized by Congresswoman Maxine Waters in 2017 during a hearing on Capitol Hill, “Reclaiming My Time” became an anthem for those refusing to let their time be misspent.

This 300-square-foot gallery within “Reckoning” focuses on the chairs and stools but also on ideas about rest and restoration involved in making time to sit and reflect. “Reclaiming My Time” will remain on view for one year before showcasing rotating displays related to design and architecture.

The space will also include books related to design, rest and self-reflection, such as Tricia Hersey’s Rest Is Resistance. The “Reclaiming My Time” gallery was made possible by significant support from CBRE

NAACP LAUNCHES MOBILE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT UNIT

Securing voting rights and fair government representation are essential to democracy. On February 12, 2024, Cincinnati NAACP was the first chapter in the United States to launch V.O.T.E., a comprehensive voter and civic engagement strategy that includes a mobile unit to engage Hamilton County residents directly in the voting process.

The first Cincinnati NAACP Mobile

Civic Engagement Unit outreach event will be held in April 2024, with monthly events with community partners scheduled afterward.

Cincinnati NAACP leaders, mobile unit sponsors, and community partners will discuss strategic priorities and bus appearances, show the mobile unit, and be available for interviews.

Cincinnati NAACP Mobile Civic Engagement Unit is 24 ft long X 10 ft

wide X 11 ft. tall. Retrofitted with six computer stations, printers, and WI-FI, the vehicle will travel to historically marginalized neighborhoods with low voter engagement.

Trained volunteers will educate residents about the voting process, distribute instructional materials, print their sample ballot, provide absentee ballot request forms, and assist in online registration (paper voter registration forms will also be available). Additionally, residents will be instructed to verify their registration status, track their mailed applications and ballots, find polling locations, and identify their elected officials.

"We could not be more excited to launch the first in the nation NAACP civic engagement strategy and mobile unit in Cincinnati on the 109th charter day of our branch, said Joe Mallory, Cincinnati NAACP president. For 109 years, our chapter has been a local leader and national role model in our organization's mission to advance policies and practices that expand human and civil rights. Thank you to sponsors and partners, Fifth Third Foundation, McElrath Slade Wholeness Institute, Kroger, Greater Cincinnati Foundation, J. Phillip Holloman, and the Urban League of Southwestern Ohio. The Cincinnati

NAACP will leverage technology and mobility to reach residents more easily to empower, engage, and educate them on voting."

David Whitehead, Cincinnati NAACP Political Action & Voter Empowerment Chair, said, "We look forward to elevating and continuing to do the work of the Cincinnati NAACP by taking the mobile unit into communities, educating residents about civic engagement, and training volunteers." He went on to say, "Our goal is to make our model scalable and sustainable beyond the election cycle."

Community partners can request the Cincinnati NAACP Mobile Civic Engagement Unit. Requests are confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on unit and volunteer availability.

Cincinnati NAACP has a vibrant history, but we are more than our past. Who we are is every bit as much about our present and future. It's about our advocacy, activism, hope, and progress legacy. The legacy we will leave is the history we continue to make, the narratives we change, and the ability to create a sustainable positive impact on the lives of people in our community now and yet to come. This year promises to be even bigger and better with 7,200 attendees and $60,000 in prize money on the line. Ivan McClellan stumbled upon Black cowboy culture in 2015 when he was invited to a Black rodeo in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. “It was a transformational moment for me. I saw hip hop culture and Black church blended seamlessly with the western world.” This led him on a nearly decade-long journey documenting and promoting this extraordinary world. Ivan’s photography has been featured in campaigns by global brands like Wrangler, Tecovas, and Apple. His forthcoming photobook Eight Seconds: Black Rodeo Culture (Damiani) is an anthology of the work to this point. In this time the prominence in Black cowboys in popular media has exploded from Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road to Pharrell’s Louis Vuitton runway show featuring working cowboys and Beyonce’s new country flavored album Cowboy Carter

The rodeo will once again feature top Black rodeo athletes from around the

country competing in thrilling events like bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, and mutton busting. Respected names in rodeo like Tre Hosley, London Gladney, and Tank Adams will travel from Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and California to compete in Portland for their second year. The event aims to introduce modern-day cowboys to fans and  educate attendees

about the rich cultural heritage of Black cowboys and cowgirls who have been a significant part of American history for centuries.

Beyond the competition, the 8 Seconds Juneteenth Rodeo offers something for everyone. Attendees can expect:

 Live music by DJ O.G.ONE

 Delicious food vendors featuring soul food and other options

 Exciting social media activations and giveaways

 A special VIP experience

 Vendor booths showcasing Western apparel and accessories

MARCH OF DIMES LAUNCHES LOW DOSE , BIG BENEFITS™ CAMPAIGN TO COMBAT PREECLAMPSIA AND PRETERM BIRTH

MARCH OF DIMES, the leading organization fighting for the health of all moms and babies, today announced the launch of Low Dose, Big Benefits, a multi-year campaign aimed at decreasing the adverse effects of preeclampsia and preterm birth through the use of low dose aspirin. The new campaign will feature US Olympian and Entrepreneur Allyson Felix as a brand ambassador and is part of the March of Dimes' It Starts With Mom platform, which provides families

labor, and delivery and even across both of their lifetimes. Studies show that pregnant people at an increased risk for preeclampsia who take low dose aspirin may reduce their risk of preeclampsia by 15% and their risk of preterm birth by 20%.

"Preeclampsia is a key driver of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity," said March of Dimes President and CEO Dr. Elizabeth Cherot "We know that low dose aspirin can improve outcomes for

importance of maternal health, particularly for women of color," said Allyson Felix, record breaking Olympic athlete and March of Dimes Celebrity Advocate Council member. "During my second pregnancy, I knew I was already at highrisk of developing preeclampsia again and through conversations with my provider, who understood my fear and listened to me, we decided that low dose aspirin was the right intervention for me and my baby. May is Preeclampsia Awareness Month, and Low Dose, Big Benefits aims to promote equal access to critical information for families and healthcare providers.

Preeclampsia is a potentially fatal condition that causes a pregnant woman's blood pressure to rise and can lead to preterm birth, heart disease, and other complications. A new survey, conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of March of Dimes, revealed nearly 1 in 5 families had never heard of preeclampsia with the number rising to over 1 in 4 for Black families. The Harris Poll also found that only 2 in 10 families surveyed are extremely or very familiar with medical interventions, such as low dose aspirin that is available to reduce the risks of preeclampsia, making this campaign a critical step towards improving maternal and infant health outcomes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, like preeclampsia, are among the leading causes of deaths, particularly for Black moms. Preeclampsia affects 1 in 25 pregnancies in the US, with potential impacts on mom and baby during pregnancy,

can improve maternal and infant health outcomes, our Low Dose, Big Benefits campaign will expand awareness to families across the US and help turn the tide on the maternal and infant health crisis."

March of Dimes will use their It Starts With Mom platform, supported by partners, to educate families and providers throughout the year on maternal health topics, including low dose aspirin, doulas, vaccines, maternal mental health, and the postpartum journey as part of the non-profit's mission to improve maternal and infant health outcomes for all moms and babies.

"We're honored to be a longstanding partner of March of Dimes, from our 39-Week Initiative to reduce unnecessary C-sections and improve outcomes for moms and babies to our work to improve postpartum education," said Amy Casseri, senior vice president at HCA Healthcare and March of Dimes National Board of Trustee member. "We know that education can make a significant impact on the care mothers and babies receive, and we are proud to be a part of this new campaign."

March of Dimes invites families and providers to tune in this month and yearround across the organization's platforms to learn more about maternal and infant health topics, including Low Dose, Big Benefits:

both mom and baby and by equipping families and providers with the knowledge and tools they need to proactively manage pregnancies, I'm hopeful that we can make significant strides in reducing poor maternal and infant health outcomes and potentially save the lives of moms and babies."

An ongoing key component of the campaign will be to educate healthcare professionals, including OB-GYNs, midwives, and pharmacists, on the benefits of low dose aspirin while also educating pregnant individuals, their families, and the public about the potential benefits of the intervention and tips on how to talk to their provider about low dose aspirin. To help with that effort, the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine has joined March of Dimes to help amplify the importance of Low Dose, Big Benefits among its 6,500 members that includes clinicians and researchers.

March of Dimes' Quality Improvement team will work with doctors and clinical staff to implement a preeclampsia screening process for pregnant patients within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy or at their first prenatal visit. While Low Dose, Big Benefits is a national campaign, March of Dimes will begin by focusing on California, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas where the highest number of births occur.

"As a mom who had a preeclampsia diagnosis in my first pregnancy that led to an emergency Cesarean birth (also called C-section) at 32 weeks, I understand the

labor and delivery were healthy, beautiful, and powerful, which is why partnering with March of Dimes to educate families about the benefits of low dose aspirin is deeply personal and important to me."

Low Dose, Big Benefits is the culmination of March of Dimes' legacy since 1938 of funding research to help millions of babies survive and thrive. From polio to preterm birth, the organization's researchers have a long history of making critical discoveries to solve some of the biggest issues facing moms and babies. In 2011, they launched the March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center (PRC) at Stanford, which was the nation's first research center dedicated to identifying the causes of preterm birth. The organization went on to create the Prematurity Campaign Roadmap in 2015 that identified eight interventions that could reduce the preterm birth rate and included low dose aspirin. In 2021, led by the faculty and staff at the California Maternal Quality Collaborative (CMQCC), the Stanford PRC invested in a low dose aspirin initiative and began to move it from research to implementation.

"We're excited about the progress we've seen in the low dose aspirin campaign piloted by our partners in California," said Dr. Emre Seli, March of Dimes Chief Scientific Advisor. "Building on our long history of health research and innovation combined with the overwhelming amount of data that shows how low dose aspirin
