The Black Stars News 2015 Annual Awards Dinner will honor Mayor David Dinkins, Rep. Charles Rangel, Rep. Yvette Clarke, R. Donahue Peebles, Barbara Arnwine, Inez Barron, Sabrina Lamb, Dr. Rudy Crew, Stephen Byrd, Alia Jones, and the Central Park Five survivors of gross injustice on December 18 from 6:00pm –10:00pm at MIST Harlem, 46 West 116th Street

TIME & TIME FOR KIDS NAME KID SCIENTIST WINNER
TIME and TIME for Kids has revealed the 2024 Kid of the Year, recognizing one exceptional young person—and five honorees—giving hope for the future.
This year’s recipient is 15-year-old scientist Heman Bekele from Fairfax, Virginia. He is recognized for developing an affordable compound-based bar of soap that could in the future be a new and more accessible way to deliver medication to treat skin cancers, including melanoma. Bekele tells TIME: “I’m really passionate about skin-cancer research…. whether it’s my own research or what’s happening in the field. It’s absolutely incredible to think that one day my bar of soap will be able to make a direct impact on somebody else’s life. That’s the reason I started this all in the first place.”
Of the new list, TIME’s editors write: “For over a century, TIME has covered influence and leadership. Typically, those we recognize are fully grown adults—in the prime of their careers or sage elders reflecting on long experience. But there are exceptions…. In fact, young people are some of the most impressive individuals out there…. That’s why we choose to recognize TIME’s Kid of the Year.”
To select the 2024 Kid of the Year, TIME solicited nominations for young leaders who are making admirable contributions in a range of fields—including social
justice, science, and business. Editors and writers combed through submissions and conducted research to identify stand-out kids in the U.S. ages 8-16.
The 2024 Kid of the Year package appears in the August 26 issue of TIME, available on newsstands since Friday, August 16.

BLACK ECONOMIC AGENDA IS NATIONWIDE
The BLACK TO THE FUTURE ACTION FUND today announced the Black Economic Agenda, a policy roadmap to inform elected officials and political candidates nationwide of Black communities' key economic priorities –from wages and taxes to housing and healthcare. The Black Economic Agenda is designed from the findings of the historic Black Census Project, the largest survey of Black people in U.S. history. "The Black Economic Agenda was created for us, by us, to enact a future of
and must be used by policymakers and candidates to deliver real results for us."
For policymakers and candidates, the agenda identifies policy holes and provides suggested fixes, including longterm policy solutions to improve Black lives. For advocates, the agenda includes helpful data to build policy campaigns and push policymakers to be more accountable to Black people. The Black Economic Agenda urges elected officials and governments to build Black economic power in the following areas:
economic justice for Black communities all across America," said Kristin Powell, Principal of Black to the Future Action Fund and Black Futures Lab "Black voters are the undeniable bedrock of our nation's democracy, but lawmakers consistently fall short of fully delivering for our communities. When Black Census participants were asked about the most important problems facing Black communities, economic issues rose to the top. The Black Economic Agenda can
Livable wages and worker and workplace protections, including raising the minimum wage to at least $17 per hour, with ongoing annual increases that account for the rising cost of living. Policies that impact not only how Black people live, but also their quality of life, such as housing, health care and childcare. One recommendation is widening homeownership options by developing programs to preserve and expand housing affordability and
availability.
Changing how states raise tax dollars and invest them, including making sure corporations and highest earners pay their fair share.
"Black people are worried about the rising costs of living and low wages that are not enough to sustain us or our families,"
said Alicia Garza, Founder and Former Principal of Black Futures Lab and Black to the Future Action Fund "The Black Economic Agenda is a concrete roadmap that can lead to economic resilience for millions of Black families and generations to come. But it only works and becomes alive if we use it — as elected officials, candidates, advocates and voters."
Last month, Black to the Future Action Fund's c3 arm, Black Futures Lab, published the full findings from the 2023 Black Census, a survey of more than 200,000 Black people across all 50 states. Of the 17 most important problems polled by the Black Census, six were economic issues, four of which ranked in the top tier of concerns. These issues include low wages, schools that fail to prepare Black children, lack of affordable housing, and lack of affordable health care. Black Census respondents strongly support policies that would make Black people more economically secure, including guaranteeing higher wages and increasing affordable housing, health care,
childcare, and college education.
The Black Economic Agenda translates these findings into a policy platform, useful for several audiences, including policymakers, candidates, advocates and the public. Black to the Future Action Fund will use the agenda to activate and engage over 250,000 Black voters across three key states ahead of November. A condensed version of the agenda will be shared with as many Black people as possible, including at doors, on the streets and virtually.
Speakers at the event to release the Black Economic Agenda on Thursday, August 8 in Atlanta, included Dawn Richards (Hip Hop Caucus artist relations director), Kendrick Sampson (actor and activist), Trae Croeckett (singer/ songwriter, MC and poet) and Conscious Lee (educator, facilitator and digital storyteller).
The Black to the Future Action Fund works to make Black communities powerful in politics, so that we can be powerful in the entirety of our lives. We work to enact policies that improve the lives of Black communities, and to elect Black and pro-Black legislators with progressive values who move progressive policies. Together we work to ensure that Black people have what all people deserve —dignity, safety, and power. https:// black2thefuture.org
BLACK MOTHER’S BREASTFEEDING ASSOCIATION AIMS TO REDUCE INEQUITIES
Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association (BMBFA) will continue to enhance community capacity and better serve Black mothers. This continued work will be supported by a new $275,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) that will allow the organization to build community capacity and boost service to Black families. This support marks a pivotal step toward achieving greater equity in breastfeeding rates and improving health outcomes for Black families.
BMBFA’s community approach to breastfeeding focuses on narrowing the disparity gap that exists in breastfeeding rates. According to the State of Michigan: Michigan Breastfeeding Plan, 2021-2024, only 74.4% of Black children born in Michigan receive breast milk compared to 89.1% of white children. Strengthening BMBFA’s infrastructure will lead to long-term increases in breastfeeding rates, creating a significant social impact that enhances and restores the emotional, psychological, and physical health of mothers and babies.
“We are profoundly grateful to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for their generous and continued support of our mission,” said BMBFA’s Founding Executive Director Kidadda Green
“This grant will enable us to make a significant difference in the lives of mothers and babies in our community. With this funding, we can enhance our programs and operations, ensuring that more mothers have the resources and support they need to successfully birth and breastfeed.”
“As we focus at the foundation on
eliminating disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes in Detroit, Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association continues to be an important partner,” says Dr. Marijata Daniel Echols, program officer for WKKF “They use their strong network of local, state and national partnerships, professional expertise, and personal experiences to serve the city’s families, as well as help build and sustain a high-quality birth and lactation support workforce.”
BMBFA will continue to build foundational networks of support and strengthen systems to overcome historical, societal and social barriers to breastfeeding success. With this additional support, the organization can enhance operations, build capacity, leverage resources and ensure long-term sustainability for its efforts to positively impact birth outcomes, creating lasting change in the community.
BMBFA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community-based organization and the leader of many local, state, and national programs aligned with the organization's mission to reduce racial
inequities in breastfeeding support for Black families. Find out more at https://blackmothersbreastfeeding. org
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF), founded in 1930 as an independent, private foundation by breakfast cereal innovator and entrepreneur Will Keith Kellogg, is among the largest philanthropic foundations in the United States. Guided by the belief that all children should have an equal opportunity to thrive, WKKF works with communities to create conditions for vulnerable children so they can realize their full potential in school, work and life.
The Kellogg Foundation is based in Battle Creek, Michigan, and works throughout the United States and internationally, as well as with sovereign tribes. Special attention is paid to priority places where there are high concentrations of poverty and where children face significant barriers to success. WKKF priority places in the U.S. are in Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico and New Orleans; and internationally, are in Mexico and Haiti. For more information, visit www. wkkf.org
BLACK WOMEN FOR WELLNESS HOLDS CONFERENCE
BLACK WOMEN FOR WELLNESS is proud to announce that California Attorney General Rob Bonta will offer opening remarks at Black Women for Wellness' 25th Annual Reproductive Justice Conference, "A New Era of Justice: Our Bodies, Our Voices, Our Freedom." The conference will be held on August 15, 2024, at The California Endowment in Los Angeles from 8am5:30pm PT.
Attorney General Rob Bonta has a distinguished history of advocating for reproductive rights in California. He was the first Attorney General to proactively go after "crisis pregnancy centers," suing a chain of centers and an anti-abortion group over misleading advertisements of an unproven and largely experimental procedure known as "abortion pill reversal." He led an investigation into statewide compliance with anti-implicit bias training for perinatal care providers, which found that not a single employee had been fully trained. As a result of the investigation, the Attorney General sponsored new legislation to ensure successful implementation of state-mandated implicit bias training to reduce the disproportionate maternal mortality rate of Black women.
Attorney General Bonta released the first-ever report on reproductive healthcare in California jails, highlighting the importance of
ensuring reproductive rights for incarcerated individuals. Finally, he has also taken action to defend access to abortion and contraception, to ensure the privacy of patients receiving reproductive health care, to demand tech companies protect sensitive reproductive health data, and to protect those who come to California for care.
Attorney General Bonta will deliver his address at 9:30 a.m. His remarks will be followed by a keynote panel titled, "Designing our Future: Perspectives and Visions for a New Era of Justice and Liberation."
The keynote panel will feature Deon Haywood, a nationally recognized leader in the reproductive justice movement and executive director of Women With A Vision, alongside Dazon Dixon Diallo, founder of SisterLove, the first women's
HIV, sexual, and reproductive justice organization in the southeastern United States.
This year's theme, "A New Era of Justice: Our Bodies, Our Voices, Our Freedom," provides a rich backdrop for stories on the evolving landscape of reproductive justice, the intersection of social justice issues, and the voices leading the charge for change. Conference participants will have the opportunity to learn from keynote speeches, panel discussions, and breakout sessions that highlight critical topics such as maternal health, environmental justice, and civic engagement.

"Black women's bodies are indeed on the line in this new era of justice ushered in by the Dodd decision, the conservative Supreme Court and the willingness of many state governments to erode a woman's right to autonomy," says Janette Robinson Flint, executive director of Black Women for Wellness
"Across the country we have seen the impact across the reproductive field, infertility, and decreased access to maternity care by the creation of maternity deserts -- especially with forprofit hospitals and bans on abortion." "Black Women for Wellness' annual Reproductive Justice Conference will bring updates across the spectrum – from implicit bias and the Blacklash (increase in anti-black racism), to criminalization of women seeking abortion care, including the impacts of maternity deserts, maternal mortality and how environmental justice plays a role in our reproductive health status. We hope you join us, plan to share the information you learn and become active as Black women experience this new era of reproductive justice."
Tickets for the 25th Annual Reproductive Justice Conference are currently on sale. For additional information about the conference, including sponsorship and volunteer opportunities, please visit www.bwwla. org or email arnedra@bwwla.com.

ENVIRONMENTAL SYMPOSIUM TO BOND A&T AND EPA
An environmental symposium to be held at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University next month is intended to strengthen the partnership between the university and the Environmental Protection Agency
The EPA and N.C. A&T Environmental Symposium is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 9, at the University Farm Pavilion. About 200 students and faculty involved in environmental programs at the university and officials from the EPA’s Office of Research and Development in Research Triangle Park are expected to attend the all-day event.
A&T faculty member Godfrey A. Uzochukwu, Ph.D., who chairs the symposium’s organizing committee, said research, partnerships and relationships are the keys to addressing current and emerging environmental issues. “Our world is facing so many environmental crises today — sealevel rise, ocean acidification, waste management, heat waves, wildfires, disease spread and damage to biodiversity and more. These issues affect food, water, air, land and energy and therefore can inflict serious economic losses,” he said. “Science makes sense when you share information, which is why it’s critical for our students, faculty and university to contribute knowledge, passion and effective solutions for environmental sustainability and to work hand in hand with the agency that makes

our nation’s environmental policy.” The symposium will open with platform presentations by university and EPA officials. Those remarks will be followed by poster presentations showcasing the research in environmental justice, air quality, water quality, and soil and waste management
This event is the first to be held under a new Memorandum of Understanding, signed in November 2023, between A&T and the EPA. This five-year agreement is intended to increase cooperation between the university and the federal government agency in areas of mutual interest.

EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan ‘98 was Uzochukwu’s undergraduate assistant and mentee in the Waste Management
conducted by A&T undergraduate and graduate students and faculty. Uzochukwu said the poster session will allow students and faculty to interact and discuss their work with visiting EPA officials. These networking opportunities could lead to future research collaborations for faculty and potential internships and employment for students.
The symposium is being chaired by Uzochukwu, a senior professor of environmental sciences in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and founding director of the university’s Waste Management Institute, which coordinates interdisciplinary environmental and waste management education at A&T. He also is chair of the EPA’s Clean Air Status and Trends
Institute when he was an A&T student.
“We’re excited to be doing the EPA and N.C. A&T Environmental Symposium,” Uzochukwu said. “It will bring out the best from our students and researchers and from the Environmental Protection Agency. We can use that time together to find our way forward for the future.”

Recently, BLACK MEN VOTE PAC released the results of a recent survey highlighting the views of Black men in the Blue Wall battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin on the upcoming presidential election and Vice President Kamala Harris
The poll surveyed 600 Black voters, including 400 Black men, from August 5 to 13, 2024. With a margin of error of +/-4.7%, the findings offer critical insights into the current mindset of Black male voters—a demographic that will play a pivotal role in the upcoming election.
Black Men Vote PAC, with its affiliates, has committed a nearly $10 million investment in 2024, registering nearly 80,000 new voters and educating thousands of young Black men in numerous barber shops across the three states, on the importance of voting. Between now and Election Day, BMV PAC will be investing nearly $4 million in the Blue Wall states educating Black men
POLL : BLACK MEN MOVE TO KAMALA HARRIS SUPPORT
through a comprehensive social media, phone and canvassing campaign, on why Kamala Harris should be their choice over Donald Trump
Among this new survey’s findings:
While Black men overall strongly prefer Vice President Harris, younger Black men (ages 18-49) are the most likely voters to consider voting for Donald Trump: Despite the high level of trust in Harris, the poll reveals that 17% of Black men (including 22% of young Black men) intend to vote for former President Donald Trump
Vice President Harris is heavily trusted to handle criminal justice reform among Black men battleground voters. Among Black men battleground voters, 28% reported reducing racism, and 22% reported criminal justice as a top three issue. When asked whether Vice President Harris can be trusted to handle criminal justice issues, nearly 7 in 10 (67%) of Black men report trust in the Vice President, signaling an important area for Vice President Harris to focus on to increase support among Black men.
Black men are more likely to vote and more positively inclined toward Democrats since Harris’s entrance into the race. 52% of Black men said Vice President Harris'
nomination would increase their motivation to vote. 52% of Black men also reported that they are more favorable toward the Democratic Party in the last month.
In considering reasons for supporting Vice President Harris, Black Men are more moveable towards supporting Vice President Harris relative to Black Women. After reading messages on Harris’s prosecutorial record, 8% of Black men reported changing their reasoning for supporting Kamala Harris as a vote for Harris rather than against Donald Trump, compared to 6% of Black women.
These results signal that increasing support for Harris among Black men and young Black men in particular, is a very possible outcome.
These findings indicate that there is still work to be done to secure the full support of this critical voter bloc and to maximize on the opportunity of her candidacy.
Black Men Vote PAC and HIT Strategies conducted the survey among Black voters in key battleground states—Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin—to better understand their perspectives leading into the 2024 election. The data will drive decisions on programming and campaign
efforts between now and Election Day. Frank White, Co-founder and Board Chair, Black Men Vote since 2012, said: "The road to the White House runs through Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. We’ve been on the ground in all three states since January. We’ve registered almost 80,000 new voters and we’ve hosted voter education events at numerous barber shops across the Blue Wall states engaging thousands of Black men. These survey results confirm what we’ve been seeing on the ground and help inform the messaging for BMVPAC digital media, phone, and canvassing programs."
Joshua Doss, Senior Pollster, HIT Strategies said: "This poll highlights significant gains made by the Harris campaign among Black voters, and the opportunity to expand on those gains with increased outreach. Vice President Harris enjoys strong trust and support from Black men, and there are still significant opportunities for further engagement. It’s crucial for the presidential campaign and others to continue reaching out to Black men to highlight her record and expand her vote share among Black men."

If you are anywhere in your journey with substance use disorder,
I want you to stop, look around and open your heart.
Revel in the abundance of your existence. See how small substance use disorder can be when sat next to all that you are or ever could be.
Fill your existence with beauty, purpose and a life of service.
And your substance use disorder— your history of addiction, the things you may have done that you are not proud of—will one day be small enough to deal with while allowing you space to live this life of joy.
Hold on.
We are not the sum of our scars but rather a beautiful mosaic of the life they hold together.
