WOMEN FORWARD NYC COMMITS $8 MIL TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE CLINICS

NEW YORK CITY MAYOR

ERIC ADAMS and NYC HEALTH + HOSPITALS has announced plans to open an $8 million health and substance use disorder clinic for pregnant and postpartum women and their families. The clinic will offer pregnant and parenting individuals living with substance use disorder — a dependence on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs — a safe and supportive place to access prenatal and postnatal care, addiction medicine, and behavioral health care. As the city aims to reduce Black maternal mortality by 10 percent and reduce opioid deaths by 25 percent by 2030, this clinic will support healthy birth outcomes, reduce the likelihood and impact of postpartum relapse, and address the needs of older children living in these families. Funded with an investment through “Women Forward NYC: An Action Plan for Gender Equity” — the Adams administration’s $43 million plan with the ambitious goal of making New York City the most woman-forward city in the country — the clinic will build on the city’s cross-sector work to improve the health and well-being of all women.

The Black Stars News 2015 Annual Awards Dinner will honor Mayor David Dinkins, Rep. Charles Rangel, Rep. Yvette Clarke, R. Donahue Peebles, Barbara Arnwine, Inez Barron, Sabrina Lamb, Dr. Rudy Crew, Stephen Byrd, Alia Jones, and the Central Park Five survivors of gross injustice on December 18 from 6:00pm –10:00pm at MIST Harlem, 46 West 116th Street

medical and behavioral health providers, including social workers, community health workers, and certified peer counselors with lived experience of substance use disorder. Robin Hood provided a planning grant of $404,000 to design a treatment model for pregnant women diagnosed with substance use disorder.

The gala starts at 6:00pm with a cocktail hour to be followed by the dinner and awards ceremonies. There will be musical entertainment by opera singer Cassandra Douglas and from harmonica phenomenon William Galison. David Dinkins is honored for Lifetime Achievement — he was New York City’s first African American mayor and also welcomed Nelson Mandela to the city after his release in 1990.

Rep. Charles Rangel, also honored for Lifetime Achievement, has served in Congress since 1971. He is a recipient of The Bronze medal for helping save soldiers behind enemy line during the Korean War

The 6,500 square foot space, expected to open in 2026, will serve approximately 200 families per year and will be located at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in the Bronx — the borough with the highest rate of opioid overdose death in New York City. In addition

"This is a critical moment for women's health in New York City and across the country," said Mayor Adams. Our administration has taken action to boost birth equity and support new families

Honoree Barbara Arnwine, civil rights lawyer, is a champion of protecting voting rights of ethnic minority groups — the emerging

Finally, this new clinic is part of a broader strategy to reduce Black maternal mortality by 10 percent by 2030 and to reduce opioid overdose deaths by 25 percent by 2030. KING CENTER CELEBRATES WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

This WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH , we honor the many contributions of the women who have helped shape our world into a global community. Women’s History Month was originally established in 1980 by the National Women’s History Project (now named the National Women’s History Alliance) who successfully lobbied President Jimmy Carter for national recognition. Each year the National Women’s History Alliance selects an annual theme that is meant to capture the essence of the moment. This year’s theme is, “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.”

The King Center’s founder, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, is one of the most impactful women in world history. Mrs. King’s commitment to justice, voting rights, nonviolence and creating a more just, humane, equitable and peaceful world is a pivotal part of why our society is better today. Without her sacrifice, we would not have unprecedented access to the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the national holiday celebrating Dr. King’s legacy, or The King Center, that serves to educate and train global citizens on Kingian Nonviolence.

One of Mrs. King’s most famous quotes is, “Women, if the soul of the nation is to be saved, I believe that you must become its soul.” There are other women whose sacrificial leadership and activism during the Civil Rights Movement embodied what it meant to be the soul of the nation like FANNIE LOU HAMER, who co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and fought for fair voter registration and desegregation.

ELLA BAKER, who helped organize

SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) and inspired many young people to get involved in the Civil Right Movement.

DIANE NASH, one of the founding SNCC members, became one of the country’s prominent student leaders and educators on nonviolence.

AMELIA BOYNTON ROBINSON, who instructed Black people farming skills and became the first African American woman to run for Congress in in Alabama.

SEPTIMA CLARK, who was a member of the NAACP and helped spark a campaign to change the policy that disallowed Black teachers from working in public schools.

In addition to the aforementioned women, there are many others who have created sustainable and equitable change in their own way. There are women like Sojourner Truth, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Ruth Bader Ginsburg or Wangari Maathai, have made an indelible mark on our world with their courage, leadership, and countless others who deserve public acknowledgement for what they have done to influence and inspire change in our “World House.”

Unfortunately, women have not historically received their just due for their leadership and innovation. Misogyny, gender bias and the lack of access have been some of the biggest barriers that have prevented many women receiving the credit they deserve for what they have done. Yet, there is no better time to change that narrative than today. The King Center’s 2024 theme is, “It Starts with Me: Shifting the Cultural Climate Through the Study and Practice of Kingian Nonviolence.” With this theme in mind, it is our responsibility to honor women who have committed their lives to shifting the cultural climate with truth, equity, and justice. We must carry on their legacies by supporting the women leaders of the future.

The King Center encourages you to complete your own personal study on women who have impacted your local communities, and to learn about the women who forged the pathway for creating a more just, humane, equitable and peaceful world.

HBCU EXPANDS COSMETIC SCIENCE PROGRAM

Research shows that Black women spent more than $7.4 billion on cosmetics and personal care products in 2022. However, Black beauty brands comprise 2.5 percent of the market. Spelman College is working to change that trajectory by ensuring that beauty products are developed with people of color in mind.

The College is proud to announce the expansion of its STEM programming to include a concentration in cosmetic chemistry for those majoring in chemistry, and a minor in cosmetic science for those majoring in other areas. The program, scheduled to be offered in the fall, is the first of its kind at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

“This expansion of our curriculum speaks to Spelman’s innovation and commitment to giving voice that empowers Black women,” said Spelman Provost Dr. Pamela Scott-Johnson “The program will be far-reaching and will support our students and faculty in making a difference in a field that caters to Black women as consumers, fueled by the scientific expertise in this area. We are thrilled to continue this evolution of creating new academic offerings that

address industry demands.” The goal of the cosmetic science program is to promote careers in the beauty industry, enhance the technical knowledge of students seeking to work in the beauty industry or pursue advanced studies in cosmetics, and ensure a gendered and racial perspective in product formulation and development.

“I am excited that we now offer a course of study that connects students' Spelman experience to the beauty and personal care industry. The new major concentration and minor will ensure our students' competitiveness for advanced

study and careers in the field,” said Dr. Leyte Winfield, professor of chemistry and biochemistry and division chair for the Natural Sciences and Mathematics. “I am equally excited that this endeavor positions us to offer a culturally relevant perspective that is needed in the conversation on black hair and skin care and the development of cosmetics.”

The cosmetic chemistry curriculum creates a signature program at Spelman that harnesses the College’s unique academic character. The program focuses on the molecular sciences related to product formulation and development, providing a fundamental understanding of the origin, structure and function of ingredients.

The cosmetic science curriculum was initially conceived as a certificate offering in the eSpelman online program and was launched in January 2023. Since its introduction, the program has grown from 150 to 750 applications for its fourth term, emphasizing student interest in the cosmetic sciences and a need for the expanded undergraduate program.

“We believe this exciting new venture will

lead to many new research opportunities and collaborations with leaders in the beauty care field,” said Dr. Michelle Gaines, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Spelman “My research is rooted in studying the surface chemical properties of curly hair. There are many students who are very interested in working on this project with me, and I’m looking forward to growing this research within the new program.”

To complement the program, Spelman will offer a one-week Cosmetic Science Summer Lab Intensive that will focus on fundamental cosmetic formulations. This event, to be held June 2 – 8, 2024, will bring together Black female product developers, formulators and researchers to convene for informative seminars and panels. The intensive is available to eSpelman learners, Spelman students, and participants from other HBCUs based on availability.

Additional information on the Summer Lab Intensive will be posted on the Spelman College website in the coming weeks.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

For National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, NYC Health + Hospitals today announced that it screened over 50,000 patients for colorectal cancer in 2023 using the at-home fecal immunochemical test (FIT), a 20% increase over 2022. FIT is an easier, less invasive screening test for colon cancer. The health system increased patient engagement by launching a Colorectal Cancer Screening Registry, which captures all patients who are eligible for a colorectal cancer screening and encourages their primary care provider to offer a test at their annual appointment. The system also increased the availability of prepaid envelopes and instructions available in 14 languages to reduce barriers to patients collecting their sample and mailing back their test for processing.

Colorectal cancer, also known as colon cancer, occurs in the colon or rectum and is the second-leading cause of cancer death in New York City. NYC Health + Hospitals offers colonoscopies and FIT kits to help prevent colon cancer or find it early when it is more treatable. When colon cancer is detected at an early stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is about 90 percent; however, only 4 out of 10 colon cancers are found this early. To make an appointment, call 1-844-NYC-4NYC. Last year, NYC Health + Hospitals/ Harlem CEO Georges H. Leconte, MPA, FAB, RRT allowed cameras to follow him as he prepped and underwent a routine colonoscopy to help encourage more New Yorkers ages 45 to 75 to get screened for the preventable cancer and to de-stigmatize the potentially lifesaving procedure. View Mr. Leconte’s video here: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=kklmTwreFJ0, and learn more here about FIT from NYC Health + Hospitals Vice President and Chief Population Health Officer Dr. Nichola

Davis

“If you’re between ages 45-75, get screened for colon cancer,” said Nichola Davis, MD, MS, Vice President and Chief Population Health Officer at NYC Health + Hospitals “FIT as an easy, less invasive alternative and a way to do routine screenings. The test can be done from the comfort of your home. We’ve made considerable strides in improving the effectiveness of our colorectal cancer screening programs with FIT. We now distribute prepaid envelopes to make it easier for patients to return the FIT, and have enhanced data that makes it easy for us to track screening and follow-up for our patients. Screening saves lives.”

“Regular screening for colon cancer is the key to preventing colorectal cancer,” said Andrew Wallach, MD, Ambulatory Care Chief Medical Office at NYC Health + Hospitals “Screening tests can find pre-cancerous lesions and remove them before they develop into cancer; they can also find cancers early when treatment is most effective. I am proud of the work of our Ambulatory Care teams whose focus on promoting healthy lifestyles helps keep New Yorkers healthy.”

“Colorectal cancer screening in ambulatory care is paramount, as

early detection can save lives and significantly improve patient outcomes,” said Dr. Joseph Williams, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health “At Gotham Health, our care team places a high emphasis on outreach, patient education, and data analysis, to improve colorectal cancer screening.”

Often, colon cancer does not show signs or symptoms until it grows or spreads, which is why it is important to screen for it regularly. Symptoms of colon cancer can include blood in the stool or rectum, sudden weight loss, and diarrhea or constipation that doesn’t go away. New Yorkers should talk to their doctor if they experience any of these symptoms.

If you get a FIT at NYC Health + Hospitals, your provider will send you home with a test kit (pictured above). You will use a brush to obtain a small amount of stool (poop), then return the test kit by mail or to the lab for testing. The FIT kit should be completed once a year, as long as blood is not detected in your stool. If blood is detected, you may need a follow-up colonoscopy.

A colonoscopy is a procedure where a doctor inserts a flexible tube with a camera on the end (colonoscope) into your rectum to check for signs of cancer. The doctor can find and remove

most small growths and some cancers. Colonoscopies have a low risk for complication and are usually painless as you are asleep during the procedure. Your NYC Health + Hospitals provider will give you instructions on how to prepare for your colonoscopy.

New Yorkers are more likely to get colorectal cancer if they:

 Are older (the older you get, the higher your risk)

Have a personal history of colon cancer or polyps

Have a family history of colon cancer

Have certain inherited risks, such as familial adenomatous polyposis or Lynch syndrome

Have inflammatory bowel disease, like ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease

Do not exercise regularly

Have obesity

Drink alcohol

Smoke

To lower your risk of colon cancer:

 Maintain a healthy weight

 Eat fewer processed meats, such as hot dogs and deli meats

 If you smoke, make a plan to quit

 Exercise regularly

 Reduce the amount and how often you drink alcohol

Most insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare, cover colon cancer screenings starting at age 45. Consult with your NYC Health + Hospitals health care provider about your colon cancer risk and with your insurer about your coverage before your screening test. New Yorkers who do not qualify for or cannot afford health insurance may be eligible for NYC Health + Hospitals’ health care access program NYC Care. For more information call 1-646-NYC-CARE (1-646-6922273). Not a NYC Health + Hospitals patient? Call 1-844-NYC-NYC (1-844692-4692) or visit our website.

If you are anywhere in your journey with substance use disorder,

I want you to stop, look around and open your heart.

Revel in the abundance of your existence. See how small substance use disorder can be when sat next to all that you are or ever could be.

Fill your existence with beauty, purpose and a life of service.

And your substance use disorder— your history of addiction, the things you may have done that you are not proud of—will one day be small enough to deal with while allowing you space to live this life of joy.

Hold on.

We are not the sum of our scars but rather a beautiful mosaic of the life they hold together.
