, Marcia L. Fudge, has announced that she would be stepping down from her position. Secretary Fudge, who was nominated by President Biden in 2021, has been a steadfast leader, providing crucial representation in the fight to secure housing justice and address our nation's growing homelessness crisis.

The Black Stars News 2015 Annual Awards Dinner will honor Mayor David Dinkins, Rep. Charles Rangel, Rep. Yvette Clarke, R. Donahue Peebles, Barbara Arnwine, Inez Barron, Sabrina Lamb, Dr. Rudy Crew, Stephen Byrd, Alia Jones, and the Central Park Five survivors of gross injustice on December 18 from 6:00pm –10:00pm at MIST Harlem, 46 West 116th Street

Fudge's leadership has been marked by integrity, compassion, and a steadfast dedication to justice. She has provided a voice for our community in the halls of power, time and time again proving herself as a dedicated and combating systemic racism within housing and urban development. "Secretary Fudge's tireless efforts in advancing social, racial, and economic justice have been truly commendable," said NAACP Chairman of the Board, Leon W. Russell "Her commitment to fighting for equitable access to affordable housing and her advocacy for marginalized communities extends far beyond the work championed during her current tenure. HUD programs and the revitalization of interagency training, under Secretary Fudge's leadership, have led to the agency serving or permanently housing over a million people experiencing homelessness in the last 3 years alone. Through her leadership at the local, congressional, and executive levels, Secretary Fudge has left an indelible mark on our nation. The NAACP is immensely grateful for her service and wishes her continued success in her future endeavors."

COMMENTARY OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM IS UNDER ATTACK

In a society yearning for equity and demanding progress, the acceptance of Critical Race Theory is not just an academic decision, it is a moral obligation. Our education system is under attack. A disturbing trend is gaining ground in the battleground of ideas that is our educational system:

just future. True progress demands an honest reflection on our past, recognizing the flaws in our current, and working for a resounding future. A wholesome education must ideally equip the youth with critical thinking abilities to face the different complexities within themselves and the environment, as well as with others that form

strategy that isn't a one-sizefits-all-all deal. CRT offers a lens whereby students can inquire about the historic underpinnings of systemic racism while building cultural competence and empathy.

Realizing the state's experiences and engaging in an open discussion about social inequalities, CRT prepares students to engage in

the advent of anti-Critical Race Theory (CRT) legislation. This isn't about preserving education as sacred, it's a thinly disguised effort to whitewash history, silence uncomfortable conversations, and increase ignorant citizens. The creators of these flawed legislative efforts seem more focused on preserving a distorted sense of patriotism rather than critical thinking abilities. They conveniently forget that education is meant to provide the youth with nuanced viewpoints of the world that challenge the status quo. Yet in their narrow war on CRT, they undermine the very purpose of education itself.

Critical race theory, a framework that examines how systemic racism operates in various aspects of society, has become a lightning rod for controversy. Yet, precisely this discomfort signals its importance. It needs to be understood that true progress requires an honest reckoning with our past, acknowledging the injustices that have shaped our present, and actively working towards a more

encounters. However, with the anticritical race theory (CRT) legislation just passed, the government is just attempting to tell the story of our history and influence public opinion. Anne Fortier once said... "those that control the past could rewrite the past..." in these legislative moves, the powers that be wish to rewrite history in ways that fit their preferred narrative - one that obliquely ignores the struggles of very poor individuals and perpetuates a distortion of truth.

IN A DIVERSE STATE LIKE NEW YORK, INTEGRATING CRITICAL RACE THEORY (CRT) INTO SCHOOL

CURRICULA

IS NOT JUST AN ACADEMIC CHOICE; IT'S A NECESSITY…

In a diverse state like New York, integrating critical race theory (CRT) into school curricula is not just an academic choice; it's a necessity for fostering understanding and unity among the state's diverse population. New York City's diverse populations need an educational

is more than a civic duty. It is a direct way to shape the future of our educational system. These gatherings enable parents, educators, and community members to talk about concerns, share insights, and participate in decisions impacting our schools. In a world where youth education is at the cutting edge of societal advancement, attending such sessions guarantees that different diverse opinions are considered so we see the change we desire. It's a chance to observe how decision-makers make choices, hear about issues our schools have, and provide ideas for change. Participation in school board meetings serves as a well-informed advocate for young people and also promotes accountability and transparency for our local school board members inside our schools. The greater the number of voices heard, the deeper the dialogue and also the former the foundation of an inclusive education system.

the complexity of our connected society. Ultimately, adopting CRT in New York's schools is an investment in creating educated, socially aware people.

MORE THAN A MONTH: A sustained effort in the works to combat anti-CRT legislation and promote inclusive education programs. Such mobilization isn't a fleeting call for change. By way of grassroots organizing, public awareness campaigns, and deliberate training curriculum projects, More Than a Month challenges discriminatory practices and encourages equal opportunities for all. Through active community engagement, the program produces a feeling of collective accountability in the battle against discrimination. The struggle to stop discriminatory practices whenever they happen should come from individuals and communities; It can not be accomplished in legislative chambers alone. This is the reason it begins locally in our communities advocating for an inclusive educational system.

To attend school board meetings

In today's digitally connected world, social media for grassroots organizing is much more than a direction - it is something for expressing yourself and for change. Using all social media enables us to reach a broader audience through outreach events, mobilize communities, engage community stakeholders, and recap our experiences as organizers to talk about the following. Social media acts as a catalyst for promoting awareness of CRT and its role in cultivating nuanced racial dynamics. It is a powerful combination: grassroots organizing via social media enables people to push for comprehensive equitable education that makes CRT a standard component of the curriculum.

Introducing CRT into classrooms bridges the gaps in understanding and fosters a more nuanced and inclusive learning environment that equips students to navigate the complexity of our society. We must be willing to confront the uncomfortable truths of our past and actively work toward a future characterized by justice and equality to achieve our society's goals. It's time to understand that education isn't about creating obedient minds but about producing thinkers who are not afraid to contribute, challenge, and question our society's evolution. Anything less is an insult to the ideals we claim to uphold.

ENTERTAINMENT & MEDIA ONLINE ROMANCES GET A DOSE OF REALITY

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network announced today an all-new relationship series that takes online dating into the real world, THE NEVER EVER METS, which will premeire on Friday, April 19 at 8pm ET/PT. Hosted by Ta’Rhonda Jones, known for her roles in Empire, The Real, The Steve Harvey Show, this 10-episode series features seven couples who have been virtually dating for some time and believe they may have found lasting love –only they have never met each other in person! Now, they’re meeting faceto-face for the very first time and sharing a house together for three weeks to see if their internet love can survive off the screen and in real life.

As all seven couples convene under the same roof, dating in person rather than through their computers or phones quickly proves to be the biggest challenge yet. While many couples have been years in the making, some quickly find the inperson relationship is not what they anticipated. To test the strength of their love connections, the group participates in a series of fun and flirty relationship activities, couples therapy and for some, a trip to the “boom boom room.” But visits from discerning loved ones, meddling opinions and tension from others in the house challenge their bonds even further. At the end of their stay, some will go home together…and some will be signing off for good. In the premiere episode, “Offline and Off the Rails,” Josh and Shay are eager to connect after 12 long years of texting, FaceTiming and everything in between. When the two finally meet, there is nothing that can hold them back. After speaking online for a month, Sandia thinks she may have found her Haitian Prince Charming, Chris. But when Chris starts sharing his views on women and faithfulness, Sandia worries about their future together. After five years, Dymond and Aaron H. finally share a romantic meal in person. But Dymond has many, many, questions for him…including his proposal to another woman after they decided to be exclusive.

MEET THE COUPLES:

Shay (Florida) & Josh (Tennessee)

 Dating 12 Years

Josh and Shay first met on Facebook Shay is the life of the party and Josh is a homebody. They have been dating for 12 years but have a complicated relationship. A few years ago their relationship hit a rough patch that they are still trying

to recover from, especially given Shay’s trust issues. There's a lot at stake for this couple. Both are ready to settle down, but trust and location are lingering issues.

JoAnna (Illinois) & Aaron J. (Georgia)

 Dating 9 Months

JoAnna aka “Jody” and Aaron met on social media, connecting on their creative and artistic similarities. They describe their relationship as being in “the dating stage” but are both looking to define their bond better. Aaron is younger and has some insecurities, while Jody is a certified sexologist who lives a sexually open lifestyle. She has strict boundaries and concerns if physical chemistry will be present.

Dymond (Florida) & Aaron H. (California)

 Dating 5 Years

Aaron and Dymond met on Facebook and the two hit it off with their mutual upbringings and great conversation. They both are in love with one another and hope to solidify their relationship with a proposal but have hit some rocky roads

of dating cheaters. Though shy, she is opinionated and has insecurities that raise concern for her and Dominique’s relationship.

Sienna (New York) & Brandan (Florida)

 Dating 10 Months

Sienna and Brandan first met on Instagram after Sienna was drawn to Brandan’s travels around the world and DM’d him. Brandan was intrigued by her forward nature, and the two hit it off. Sienna is a straightforward, independent girl from the Bronx and Brandan is a military kid who spent most of his childhood overseas. Sienna has hesitations dating a man with kids and Brandan is a social butterfly but admits he’s fearful of getting hurt in love again.

Sandia (Florida) & Chris (Florida)

 Dating 3 Months

Sandia and Chris met on Instagram when he slid into her DMs. Sandia didn’t reply at first, but when Chris tried again, she responded. They have a lot in common – both are Haitian, speak Creole, are very family oriented and like to work out. But Sandia is much more conservative

just 30 minutes from each other but have never met. Millie is high maintenance and wants an alpha male to make her feel secure so she can embrace her true feminine side. Gregg has been a player for a long time but is ready to leave it behind for Millie if she is indeed the one. Both admit they have love for each other but are skeptical if it can grow to be more than just friendship and attraction.

As the show’s host, Ta’Rhonda Jones is a voice of reason for the group, checking in with the couples week to week to see how their time together is going, addressing relationship concerns and facilitating fun team exercises. In addition to her role on The Never Ever Mets, Jones is an actress, activist, director, producer, celebrity master chef champion, fashion designer, host, comedian, rapper, song writer and philanthropist.  She is most known for her breakout role as Porsha, on Fox’s hit television show Empire, and has appeared as co-host on The Real and The Steve Harvey Show,

along the way. Dymond questions his faithfulness – especially after learning of his many female friends.

Alexis (Texas) & Dominique (Illinois)

 Dating 6 Months

Alexis DM’d Dominique after he went viral on a podcast segment. Dominique considers himself a sensitive romantic with old school ways but is a serial playboy who loves to flirt. Alexis is a single mom and former military with a history

than Chris, who likes to flirt. Though Chris likes Sandia's good-girl nature, personality differences and jealousy threaten to interfere with their budding romance.

Millie (California) & Gregg (California)

 Dating 3 Years

Millie and Gregg met on social media, liking posts here and there and even matching a few times on dating apps. Surprisingly they live

as well as host of the carpet for E! News and the BET Soul Train Awards. She has been featured on ABC, Fox, NBC, Lifetime and BET, among others. Jones enjoys spending her off season as a nonprofit leader and motivational influencer, fashion designer and music artist.

NAACP AND CBS DEVELOP NEW DAYTIME DRAMA

The joint venture between CBS Studios and the NAACP is developing a new daytime drama for the CBS Television Network.

The series, titled THE GATES, follows the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community. Michele Val Jean, who has written more than 2,000 episodes of daytime dramas and won multiple Daytime Emmy and WGA Awards for her work on

THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL and "General Hospital," will serve as writer and showrunner. Val Jean will also be an executive producer alongside Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson and Kimberly Doebereiner THE GATES will be produced by the CBS Studios/NAACP production venture in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble

"THE GATES will be everything we love about daytime drama, from a new and fresh perspective," said Sheila Ducksworth, president of the CBS Studios NAACP venture. "This series will salute an audience that has been traditionally underserved, with the potential to be a groundbreaking moment for broadcast television. With multidimensional characters, juicy storylines and Black culture front and center, THE GATES will have impactful representation, one of the key touchstones of the venture."

Continued Ducksworth, "I'm excited to develop this project with CBS and P&G, two of the longest and most passionate champions of broadcast and daytime television, and the NAACP, whose enduring commitment to Black voices and artists is both powerful and inspiring. I also want to thank CBS' George Cheeks, NAACP's Derrick Johnson and P&G's Marc Pritchard for their personal involvement and support to take our next step forward with THE GATES."

The CBS Studios' production venture and development deal with the NAACP was established to help elevate a diverse range of voices as well as increase the visibility of Black artists on broadcast and streaming platforms in an everevolving media landscape.

The NAACP advocates, agitates, and litigates for the civil rights due to Black America. Our legacy is built on the foundation of grassroots activism by the biggest civil rights pioneers of the 20th century and is sustained by 21st century activists. From classrooms and courtrooms to city halls and Congress, our network of members across the country works to secure the social and political power that will end race-based discrimination. That work is rooted in racial equity, civic engagement, and supportive policies and institutions for all marginalized people. We are committed to a world without racism where Black people enjoy equitable opportunities in thriving communities.

According to the National Center for Homeless Education, over 1.2 million school-aged children are experiencing homelessness or transitional housing citing the impact on their school work and performance. Witnessing the plague of homelessness ravage schools and communities throughout the U.S, Zion was inspired to join her father Dr. Terence Lester in addressing systemic poverty, mobilizing aid to families, and now launching Zion's Closet; a collaboration with various school districts powered by Love Beyond Walls to provide clothing, school supplies and hygiene products for K-12 students in disproportionately impacted communities across the country.

“'Zion Learns to See' is more than just a children's book; it equips families with tools to have meaningful conversations about empathy, kindness, and celebrating the power of community," says Zion Lester “'Zion Learns to See' shows that our youth can be catalysts for change regardless of age, inspiring others to serve too.

"I am incredibly grateful to have co-authored this book with my daughter," says Dr. Lester "Teaching my children that

service is not merely an activity but a way of life has been a deeply rewarding experience. We hope that "Zion Learns To See" inspires parents to cultivate a generation that loves without condition, respecting the dignity and worth of every individual."

Zion’s interest and curiosity about her dad, Dr. Terence Lester’s work launched a Since then, she has become a community leader, writer, and speaker. She has also continued to regularly serve with Love Beyond Walls and encourages others her age and younger to volunteer.

Dr. Terence Lester is a minister,

speaker, community activist, author, and founder of Love Beyond Walls, a not-for-profit organization focused on poverty awareness and community mobilization. Completing his doctorate studies in Social Change, Dr. Lester is known for nationwide campaigns that bring awareness to issues surrounding homelessness, poverty, and economic inequality. He has been featured on The Today Show, Good Morning America, NBC, USA Today, Black Enterprise, and Essence, among others. Dr. Lester's unique approach to confronting systemic issues starts with challenging the public’s perception of the least of these and equipping

communities with the power of empathy to influence social change.

Our journey began with an inspiring kickoff on February 23, 2024 at CDU, followed by the main Blood Drive event at FCBC in Inglewood, California on February 25, 2024. These gatherings were more than just events; they were a powerful demonstration of unity, compassion, and the collective will to make a significant impact. We are set to return to FCBC on Sunday, February 23, 2025, for our third Blood Drive.

Why This Matters: This initiative was anchored in the pressing need to increase the number of blood donors in our communities, particularly to support those battling Sickle Cell Disease—the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States, primarily affecting individuals of African

descent. Patients with this condition often require regular blood transfusions throughout their lives, and seasonal changes can exacerbate their suffering, triggering painful crises that necessitate

these lifesaving transfusions. However, compatibility challenges mean that only one in three African American blood donors are a match for people with Sickle Cell Disease, highlighting the

urgent need for more donors.

Our Call to Action: In alignment with the "Our Blood Saves Lives" and "Closing the Sickle Cell Gap" campaigns, we are dedicated to bridging this divide through our "Blood Links Us Together" initiative.  The success of our Blood Donor Project is a testament to the power of community solidarity and the profound difference we can make when we come together for a common cause.

We invite you to continue this momentum by signing up to be a blood donor today. Visit www.redcross.org/ give-blood.html. Your contribution could be the key to saving a life and supporting those in our community who rely on these critical donations.

We are immensely thankful for every donor, volunteer, and partner who joined us in this life-saving initiative. If you are anywhere in your journey with substance use disorder,

I want you to stop, look around and open your heart.

Revel in the abundance of your existence. See how small substance use disorder can be when sat next to all that you are or ever could be.

Fill your existence with beauty, purpose and a life of service.

And your substance use disorder— your history of addiction, the things you may have done that you are not proud of—will one day be small enough to deal with while allowing you space to live this life of joy.

Hold on.

We are not the sum of our scars but rather a beautiful mosaic of the life they hold together.
