KEEPING EFFLUENT OUT OF THE RAIN IT HAS ONLY BEEN JUST OVER A year since Westland dairy farmers Darren and Jennifer Hislop had their Flexi Tank NZ installed but they are extremely pleased with the benefits that have resulted from it. Every year in spring on their 71-hectare farm, when the rainfall is at its heaviest in the Westport area, Darren and Jennifer would lose a lot of capacity in their three effluent ponds. It was the forward thinking of these Westport farmers that led them to Flexi Tanks NZ as a storage solution for their effluent. They did some research and looked at various options but found that with the Flexi Tank being enclosed and the lower cost, meant other storage solutions couldn’t compete. The couple installed a 500 cubic metre (500,000-litre) Flexible Effluent Bladder tank. Effluent is pumped into the bladder
tank directly from a concrete holding tank, after having been filtered through a wedge and sand trap system. It is then very easy for Darren to connect his PTO Pump directly to the Flexi Tank and pump out to his irrigator directly from there when needed. They decided to go bigger than needed with their tank, so it gives them the “luxury of time to wait to irrigate which is needed especially on the West Coast,” Jennifer says. Darren was “surprised and pleased with the lack of solids present when pumping from the Flexi Tank”. They have found that the effluent collected in their Flexi Tank is much higher quality than they had previously from their ponds and no crusting or smell to deal with either is an added bonus.
A Flexitank set up onfarm.
When asked what the top three benefits were, Darren and Jennifer said they “loved the aesthetics of the Flexi Tank in the surrounding environment” along with it “taking up less room than your standard effluent pond” but the main benefit would have to be “no longer wasting time pumping rainwater on to paddocks”. Flexi Tanks are a cost-effective solution ideal for all dairy farmers throughout New Zealand. The enclosed bladders have been manufactured in France since 1959 by Labaronne Citaf and store anywhere from 100 litres to 2 million litres of effluent. Designed to be safe, practical and easy, you can see why so many farmers are trusting Flexi Tanks over other traditional alternatives. More? Visit www.flexitanks.co.nz
