TAKE THE FIRST STEP TO COMPLIANCE Welcome to our NZ Dairy Exporter special publication, Effluent Management Solutions. This publication replaces our usual Official Guide to the annual Effluent & Environment Expo which fell victim to the Covid-19 uncertainty and was cancelled for 2020. Our aim with this publication is to focus on solutions for today’s effluent management challenges. We’ve sourced editorial and advertising from a range of national and regional companies who service the dairy farm sector with effluent management products and services. Included in this publication is advice from DairyNZ and independent advisors on effluent system design and compliance. The first step to create or maintain a compliant effluent system on your dairy farm could be as simple as calling one of the advertisers who have supported this publication. They are all committed to providing value to the dairy farm sector. Achieving compliance is not avoidable. It is a requirement to continue supplying milk to your chosen milk company. The rewards are tangible, but so is the financial and emotional pain for those who continue
to remain non-compliant. Look out for advice early next year on the 2021 Effluent & Environment Expo dates. The Expo’s organisers Amanda and Matt Hodgson are committed to it returning in November 2021. They were disappointed not to be able to go ahead this year, knowing the need was there from dairy farmers looking for advice and information on effluent management. However, they also know that need won’t disappear in the next year and they are determined to make 2021 a great one-stop shop for everything farmers need to manage dairy farm effluent safely, efficiently and within compliance requirements. Like many of you who are second or third generation farm owners with links to the land dating back 100 years, NZ Dairy Exporter is approaching its 100th year of publishing. The first issue was printed in 1925 and we’d love you to join us soon on the journey to another 100 years. If you’re already a subscriber to NZ Dairy Exporter, we thank you. If you’re not a subscriber, then visit nzfarmlife. co.nz to find out how you can enjoy the country’s most trusted dairy publication. Tony Leggett, Publisher

TALK FIRST BEFORE TACKLING EFFLUENT CHALLENGES CHOOSING A NEW OR UPGRADED effluent system often involves a considerable capital spend, so being involved in the decisions about what will work best for you and your farm is crucial. This is particularly important if you’ve got someone doing your effluent storage calculation for you. There is not a specific volume of storage your farm needs as it will vary depending on your farm’s location, soils, size, infrastructure and your management. Take ownership of the decisions being made to ensure the final outcome is a good fit for you and your farm. It’s not all about getting the smallest storage volume, it’s about the ‘right’ storage volume that best fits your farm. Regional Councils require storage volumes to be calculated using the Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator (DESC). The DESC has a library of more than 30 years of daily climate data (rainfall and evapotranspiration) for most dairying areas throughout the country, and uses this information to model a soil water balance. The DESC calculates how much effluent is generated each day, and using the historical climate data determines how often soil moisture conditions were suitable for effluent irrigation. If irrigation could take place, it calculates how much effluent would be removed from storage. If effluent irrigation couldn’t take place it calculates how much effluent will be sent to storage. From these calculations it can
determine how much storage you will need. There are many inputs to the DESC that will determine how much storage your farm needs. These include soil risk, water use in the shed, effluent application depths, pump rates, milking season length, herd size, climate, catchment areas, and storm water diversions to name a few. Some of these will be “fixed” on your farm, such as climate, catchment areas, herd size and season length. Others can be variable and up for consideration as a mitigation in reducing storage requirements. You must get involved with whoever is running the DESC for you. Ask them for a variety of scenarios showing the impact of options on storage and your farm’s management. Where do you want to spend your money; on mitigations or extra storage? Get them to run a number of scenarios that help you decide which options you want to pursue - make them earn their money! You can cost all the different options to get an idea of what you want to pay for. These are some useful questions to ask yourself as you work through the DESC: • Do I have any low risk soil on my farm that is not currently in my effluent block? • What would a low depth irrigation system look like on my farm? How easy or hard would it be to manage? • What would a storm water diversion cost to install? What reduction in storage

volume would it give me? • How much water does my dairy shed currently use? • Did they measure/calculate my water use or just use an “industry average”? Using industry average will not result in an accurate calculation for your farm • What would water reduction look like on my farm? • Green water recycling can have huge savings- did my consultant consider this option? • How much storage would I need if I chose not to irrigate over calving? When you do the cost benefit of all the options - don’t forget to include the time it would take to manage your system as it’s pointless to choose options that give you the smallest possible storage requirement, but are a nightmare to manage. Choose a system that fits you and your farm- both from a labour/time point of view and cost. • Logan Bowler is an independent advisor on dairy effluent systems. Call 021 225 9415
TECHNOLOGY AIDS REPORTING IN 2020 VANTAGE NZ PICKED UP A range of proven tools and technologies to help ensure that effluent is managed as accurately and efficiently as possible. To ensure that effluent is being applied effectively on-farm, soil moisture and environmental monitoring are vital. Incorporating soil moisture monitoring into your effluent management ensures farmers are keeping an accurate record of how they are affecting soil moisture levels, giving them the insight to adjust application rates based on soil moisture levels as required. 6
Another easy addition to an effluentbased soil moisture monitoring solution is a weather station to record rainfall and help automate record-keeping of rainfalls compared to when effluent was being applied on-farm. Utilising an integrated solution through Vantage NZ, with the ability to also work off existing Halo Milk Vat Monitoring systems, provides the best value for money while ensuring that farm information is centrally stored for ease of reporting when it comes to compliance. While monitoring environmental
factors to manage effluent is very important, so is proof-of-placement. Vantage NZ brings to the NZ market the industry-leading suite of Trimble Agriculture precision hardware. For farms that apply effluent through slurry spreaders, the Trimble GFX350 with Precision IQ and Trimble Ag Software allows proof-of-placement maps to be easily captured, the slurry applicator controlled, and the map automatically sent through to the Trimble Ag Software for easy recordkeeping.

NO STOPPING THIS DAM LINING TEAM LOCKDOWN FOLLOWING THE Covid-19 outbreak in New Zealand could not have come at a worse time for IS Dam Lining Ltd, with 30 farm dairy effluent ponds to be lined with HDPE plastic and welded. Dam lining crews stood down as Lockdown Level 4 came into force, and the company regrouped to consider their best next move. Staff with health concerns would clearly be unable to work. Agricultural Industrial Commercial Residential Ravensdown’s product manager for ClearTech Carl Ahlfeld says monthly water savings at the Lincoln University Dairy Farm equate to the average daily use of 3000 people.
CLEARTECH CONTINUES TO PROVE ITS WORTH NOW IN ITS SECOND SEASON, THE ClearTech effluent treatment system installed at Lincoln University Dairy Farm (LUDF) continues to prove its worth. It has saved more than 600,000L of freshwater in a single month just by using the clarified water from the system for yard washdowns. That 600,000L equates to the average daily water use of 3000 people. If adapted across the New Zealand dairy industry, ClearTech effluent treatment systems have the potential to save millions of litres of freshwater. Ravensdown’s product manager for ClearTech, Carl Ahlfeld, says the water saving was an impressive achievement. Other efficiencies have been observed too. “The volume of coagulant required has been less this spring, specifically because the cow hair and older effluent has been kept out of the fresh effluent, an initiative that LUDF implemented this year. This has kept costs down.” ClearTech efficiencies are being duplicated daily with eight other units now operating on dairy farms in Canterbury and the Waikato, and more recently in the transport industry. “We are now cleaning livestock transport trucks with recycled effluent wash from ClearTech, saving millions of litres of fresh water in the process as well as dramatically reducing the
disposal of effluent,” says Carl. “This is both environmentally beneficial and a major cost saving for the industry.” A scientific paper published recently outlined considerable environmental benefits when clarified water from the ClearTech system was applied directly to pasture soil. Compared to untreated farm dairy effluent (FDE), E. coli concentrations leached from the ClearTech-treated effluent and clarified water were reduced by up to 99.99%. Total-P losses from the lysimeters measured 90.5% and 85.7% lower than untreated FDE lysimeters and the dissolved reactive phosphate (DRP) reductions from clarified water and treated effluent were 99.9% and 99.5% respectively. Reductions in phosphate leaching loss can lessen the impact of agriculture on water quality and help when preparing a farm environment plan. The continued innovation and development of ClearTech is the result of a partnership between Lincoln University and Ravensdown, built on robust science with a clear drive to provide smarter farming solutions to reduce environmental impacts in New Zealand. Future innovation for ClearTech is ongoing with the plant undergoing regional testing at the Waikato LIC innovation farm.

Thinking outside the [tree and fence lined] box Dung beetles will deliver upon the promise to restore and protect our freshwater while increasing production and drought tolerance. We need to be smarter than just focusing on planting and fencing. Without question that is where dung beetles fit in. There is absolutely no better scientifically proven way of reducing overland flow than dung beetles. They deliver an up to 80% reduction in overland flow. This results in a 97% reduction in sediment, and equally includes reduced e. coli and phosphorus. Seed dung beetles to fix the broken nutrient cycle and boost production.

DUNG BEETLES NOW ON 350 FARMS NEW ZEALAND FARMING IS transforming and those at the leading innovative edge are looking back at our past. In fact, 100 million years ago! Dung beetles evolved with our large exotic herbivorous and should have been on the boat with them. While a bit slow off the mark we can now rebalance our farming systems. There are around 350 farmers who have released over 1000 dung beetle colonies the full length of the country. The two people driving the rebalancing of New Zealand’s farming system are Andrew Barber and Dr Shaun Forgie. Andrew Barber project managed the Dung Beetle Release Strategy Group, an MPI farmer led project to import dung beetles into New Zealand, while internationally recognised entomologist Dr Shaun Forgie was the lead scientist for the project.
Inspired by their desire to see the dung beetle improve New Zealand’s soils and waterways, the two men established Dung Beetle Innovations as a commercial enterprise. Now they want to see as many farmers as possible enjoy the benefits provided Thousands of dung beetles are already at work in NZ soils, by dung beetles. tirelessly working to improve soil and plant health. A BALANCED SYSTEM IS KEY TO EFFICIENCY EXPERIENCED BIOLOGICAL consultant David Law says he can tell a lot about a dairy farm from the depth of crust on top of the effluent pond. “It is now clear to me that every part of the farming system plays an important role for the whole farming enterprise to function correctly, economically and sustainably – yet few farmers and qualified experts have connected all the dots,” he says. He has developed a concept he calls the BioCircle, which shows the important interaction of all activities on the farm. This includes showing not only the success which can be achieved, but also the damage which can occur if any particular area of the BioCircle is not performing to its best. He says a dairy farm effluent pond, which is generally used as a dumping
ground, will show the biggest visual picture of what the whole BioCircle is doing. Consultant David Law says crust depth on a pond says a lot Many people think the about the balance of the entire dairy farm. problems associated with effluent start in the effluent pond, which leads to farmers investing and legumes, will also feed the microbes supporting a whole industry of machines which then move through the system to process it. to beneficially affect the feed grown and In fact, the effluent pond and its the correct balanced rumen in the cow, associated problems is the result of all the creating the best conditions to digest the activities which come before the pond. feed eaten. TURN FARM EFFLUENT INTO MEASURED NUTRIENTS EFFLUENT WAS ONCE DISMISSED AS a waste product, yet farm dairy effluent (FDE) can have good levels of nitrogen and potassium, making it a suitable fertiliser for maize and other crops. Effluent “waste” can effectively be recycled - utilising it either on its own or in addition to fertiliser nutrients depending on the paddock history and crop yield targets. When slurry or sludge is applied to land, the solids content also contributes to the soil organic matter. This can be of benefit where paddocks have been repeatedly cropped. What’s more, the nutrients in effluent
applied to land tend to be slow release, with only about 50% of the N and P available in the first year of application. K is almost all available. So, paddocks with a long history of effluent application may have a large ‘bank’ of nutrients in the soil, waiting to be utilised. That’s why such areas show no response to added fertiliser in the first year out of pasture – and why there is an environmental benefit by planting deep-rooted crops such as maize to extract nutrient that otherwise could be lost to waterways. At Hill Laboratories, the team sees effluent testing as a vital part of nutrient
management. It offers a dairy effluent sampling kit with instructions on how to collect and send an FDE sample. The Certificate of Analysis (report) provides test results in an easy-to read table, and shows a worked example for N, P and K results calculated on a kg/ha basis, for two different application depths. Getting an effluent test done a few times per year is recommended, as the nutrient composition can change according to season, and also cow diet. Contact the team at Hill Laboratories today for more information on farm effluent testing or try our new online ordering through our customer portal.

YARDMASTER CONTINUES TO LEAD THE SECTOR THE TREND TO SHORE-MOUNTED systems is well recognised in the dairy effluent industry. It was driven initially by health and safety demands, but the benefits in ease and cost of maintenance are the main drivers. Reid & Harrison has continued to develop its range of in-house products and is regarded as a leader in the sector. The latest version of its shore-mounted stirrer is a hybrid of two earlier models. Taking the ease of the bank-end fixing system and the advantages of a winch for lifting, this was combined with the relative simplicity of the original belt driven model. The result is a stirrer that provides better end-user functionality and easy

LOW CAPITAL OUTLAY FOR FLEXI TANK OPTION TARANAKI DAIRY FARMER GLENN Taylor is a happy man after Flexi Tank installed a French designed and made effluent storage bladder on his Ngaere farm in June, 2018. “Basically it’s done what I wanted it to do. STOP WORRYING ABOUT EFFLUENT SIMPLIFY YOUR SYSTEM HAVING A SIMPLE EFFLUENT system is the best thing since sliced bread says John Climo who farms 530 cows at Wharepapa South, Waikato. John’s previous set up might sound familiar- a manikin tank, sump, and pumped straight to pasture which had to go every day, even if it’s wet. It was a constant worry. It was a nightmare if the pump broke down, the power was off, or if it blocked and didn’t pump, John says. “We had to shift the irrigator and manage it every milking, it was so labour intensive, especially when it blocked.” Now with his Archway Weeping Wall system he doesn’t have to worry. “We went to the weeping wall because the pumps couldn’t handle the sand,

FEEDBACK ENHANCES NUMEDIC PRODUCTS
STORAGE CHALLENGE SORTED BY KLIPTANK
MANY FARMERS WILL NEED TO INSTALL A NEW effluent system or upgrade the existing one to achieve compliance. A few key considerations include: • Simplicity – it is important that the equipment is easy to operate, saving on time, labour and frustration. • Capital cost - effluent systems are not a low-cost infrastructure. You only want to install it once and do it right, and pay for what you need. • Environmental compliance and footprint - your system needs to comply with your local council requirements. • Reliability – it is important to have equipment that does the job well and does not break when you need it most. • Maintenance cost – with so many things to be maintained on a farm, you do not want high maintenance bills for your effluent system every year. • Suitability – a system that will work well in the future. Whether it is pumps, stirrers, hydrants, filters, reticulation lines or irrigation systems, Numedic products provide options suitable for a wide range of applications and budgets. These products are designed based on farmer feedback and the way the equipment is used on farms to address the most common issues they have with effluent equipment.
KLIPTANK PRODUCED THE ANSWER TO EFFLUENT storage for dairy farmer Hugh Chisholm, who runs a highly productive 1200 cow farm near Putaruru, Waikato. After years of upgrading his feed pads, covered housing and silage bunkers, the farm had massive concreted catchment areas which put his original effluent system under pressure during heavy rain events. Kliptank constructed a new 4,000,000L effluent storage facility on the highest hill 1.2km away, 40m above the milking parlour. The Kliptank is 45m in diameter and 3m high. Effluent is transferred to the tank through a 180mm pipe. To do this Hugh dug the trench himself and hired a helicopter for the day to shift all the lengths of pipe while a contractor fusion welded it all together. With his new tank Hugh has been able to extend his irrigation system to the entire back end of the farm and can now spread effluent over almost all of his 360ha. The Kliptank was installed on a dished sand foundation with a Centre Base Drain to provide a low point to suck the solids out of. He also installed Kliptank’s patented Klipjet and Crust Buster stirring system – a hydraulic stirring system powered by his 130hp diesel pump which not only blasts the sludge up off the bottom it gets all the solids into suspension before irrigating. At the same time, it also provides much needed aeration to assist the aerobic microbes in breaking down the solids.

The Larall Smart Hydrant in action.
CLEVER HYDRANT DELIVERS ON-FARM BENEFITS INSTALLING A SMART EFFLUENT management system that delivers benefits like maximum nutrient utilisation and compliance with council regulations, and takes minimal labour to operate, has to be the aim for dairy farmers. The Larall Smart Hydrant (LSH) from Effluent & Irrigation offers those benefits. It utilises 4-6 medium size Rainguns which are controlled intermittently, meaning a very low average application rate of 1.5mm per hour. It also requires relatively low labour to operate and enables high volumes of effluent to be pumped per session, maximising irrigation opportunity. This offers dairy farmers smarter effluent management control with deferred irrigation, effective utilisation of nutrients, as well as labour savings.
When Reliability Matters.
Failsafe features are also available such as if there is a low or high pressure fault registered, caused by either a leak or blockage, the LSH system will shut down the main effluent pump, giving the farm operator added peace of mind. The low application intensity reflects a ‘little and often’ concept enabling nutrients to be maintained within the plant root zone. This is critical to gain the maximum value of the nutrients produced in effluent and maximise the return on investment. This system also allows irrigation to take place when traditional systems may not because of ponding or runoff risks. When effluent enters the LSH its pressure is activated but only one of the valves is opened at one time. The LSH directs the effluent through the open
valve to the raingun for a set duration, for example 15mins. Once the set time has lapsed, the next valve opens as the open valve closes and continues spreading effluent to the next raingun. Over wetter months, the amount of effluent that goes to each raingun could be based on 10 mins of pumping. Based on a 10-minute period there would be a 50-minute rest between each application. The rest time allows the effluent to be absorbed by the soil which limits ponding and run off and maximises nutrient retention. If the LSH was irrigating two 3ha paddocks, there would be 6 shifts per gun to complete the area. The total application depth is relevant to pumping time and should be based on soil moisture levels. For example, to apply 10mm total depth the pumping time would be 7 hours between shifts. The total pumping time to complete the paddocks (after 6 shifts) would therefore be 42 hours. Pumping approximately 18m³ per hour, this would equal 756m³. When based on a herd size of 500 cows and producing 35m3 per day this is about 21 days of effluent irrigated. In this situation the system can be used once every three weeks for deferred irrigation. If the total required depth is higher, say 15mm, then the pumping time between shifts would be 10 hours. The total volume pumped would be 1080m³ or 30 days effluent. Labour savings are a result of setup time, or trips to the paddock, versus the total volume pumped. A common comparison here is with travelling irrigators and the ‘turnaround time’ required for their given output.

NEW OWNERS FOR ENVIROLINE JASON AND ROZ HARRISON ARE putting their knowledge and past experience in farming to great use as the new owners of Enviroline, renowned for supplying quality linings for a variety of ponds including effluent and decorative. “We wanted our own business as we have a young family. The decision to take over at Enviroline came earlier than expected earlier this year,” says Jason. They took ownership on July 1 and look forward to building ongoing relationships. The couple have both been around farms their whole lives. Roz was born on a dairy farm before moving to beef and sheep operations and also worked on horse studs. “I am Te Awamutu born and bred. My father is a vet and we understand the needs of the farming community. I have predominantly worked in the agriculture/ veterinarian industry and have spent the most part of the last 20 years dealing with dairy farmers,” Jason says. Most of Enviroline’s business is in providing the HPE linings for dairy effluent ponds. “We are getting into the commercial sector including stormwater ponds for subdivisions and catchment ponds for industrial sites. We also line decorative
ponds for lifestyle block holders, and farmers,” Jason says. Getting involved early in a farm effluent system design is always better. “We are happy to get involved at any stage of a project and help design the pond as well through our contacts. Farmers need to account for the soil type, number of cows, and the annual rainfall for a pond to be built correctly.” Ponds need to be constructed with the right material and lined the correct way. You need leak protection and there are a number of technical issues to consider. “It’s not like the old days where you just dug a hole and put a pipe in,” Jason says. There is three layers to the lining and it is important to understand what the end product will look like. Getting everyone involved in the construction of a pond as early as possible can substantially reduce potential delays. “It is good to have everyone such as the earth works guys around the table from day one to discuss the process. That is better than discovering you can’t line a pond because of this issue or that issue.” “I believe we have a high quality product. There is always a cheap option but cheap is rarely the best. We have the

backing of the supplier, can provide a 20-year liner warranty and an eight-year workmanship guarantee.” Being a small business means Jason is on site for each job where he can deal with issues immediately. “If you are looking for quality workmanship, superior liners, successful effluent containment at realistic prices call the team at Enviroline NZ to discuss how we can help you.” 29

NEW POND LINER COMES WITH 20-YEAR GUARANTEE WHEN CANTERBURY DAIRY farmers Nigel and Amy Rutherford of Malbon Dairy Farm chose to upgrade their clay-lined effluent storage pond, they chose Viking Containment to provide advice and the right product. Increased storage capacity and compliance were the key drivers for the pond design, and it also provided a contingency for possible future expansion. The previous storage was only 4-5 days, but their new High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)-lined pond has increased their capacity to 1800m³, providing 20-25 days storage.
The new effluent system lined by Viking Containment.
Nigel is very happy with the outcome. “In some recent wet weather where the soil capacity was at its maximum, I didn’t have to worry about effluent management issues – it makes the whole operation very efficient and much easier,” he says. The extra storage capacity allows them to put more time and focus into animal health and pasture. The new pond construction involved removal of the existing pond so it was programmed to be completed in the offseason. Earthworks were completed by Roy Hill Construction to a high standard. The excavated pond was 40m x 40m x
3.5m depth with a 2H:1V slope gradient and a 500mm freeboard. The liner system consisted of 1.5mm HDPE Liner, Geotextile protection layer over the subgrade surface, Viking Gas Venting system and Geoladders for safe egress in and out of the pond. The 1.5mm HDPE liner comes in 8.0m wide panels which allows efficient deployment and installation, and was completed in one day. All the seam welding and testing was documented in a comprehensive Quality Assurance Report. For peace of mind and assurance Viking’s HDPE liner also has a 20-year product warranty.

PPP INDUSTRIES LTD INSTALLED THE FIRST PRESSscrew separator at a New Zealand dairy farm in Northland in 2001. This was quickly followed by another unit in Manawatu. Since 2001 PPP has installed systems in most provinces of NZ, but the range of customers is now expanded to include piggeries, truck wash stations and meat works. The design and installation are an important part of all its projects but the quality of the separators ensures PPP has never experienced a failure. PPP offers three models catering in size from flow rates of 5-10m3 per hour up to large projects of 80m3 per hour. The separators can deal with heavy flows of solids such as paunch material through to diluted waste such as in the dairy industry. Since the company’s involvement in business waste streams other opportunities have developed such as composting. Its supplier of separators also manufactures “in-vessel composters” so smells can all be contained. These systems have minimal power and labour demand so are very efficient. These composters are part of the success that enable our systems to turn protein waste, such as dead birds from the poultry industry into a biological fertiliser in 24-30 hours. PPP Industries Ltd was established in 1962. Since the inception of the business the company has been a leader within the poultry industry, dairy feeding systems, sheep dipping equipment and now has laid out plans to revolutionise the composting industry.
