This publication replaces our usual Official Guide to the annual Effluent & Environment Expo which fell victim to the Covid-19 uncertainty and was cancelled for 2020. Our aim with this publication is to focus on solutions for today’s effluent management challenges. We’ve sourced editorial and advertising from a range of national and regional companies who service the dairy farm sector with effluent management products and services. Included in this publication is advice from DairyNZ and independent advisors on effluent system design and compliance. The first step to create or maintain a compliant effluent system on your dairy farm could be as simple as calling one of the advertisers who have supported this publication. TALK FIRST BEFORE TACKLING EFFLUENT CHALLENGES CHOOSING A NEW OR UPGRADED effluent system often involves a considerable capital spend, so being involved in the decisions about what will work best for you and your farm is crucial. This is particularly important if you’ve got someone doing your effluent storage calculation for you. There is not a specific volume of storage your farm needs as it will vary depending on your farm’s location, soils, size, infrastructure and your management. Take ownership of the decisions being made to ensure the final outcome is a good fit for you and your farm. It’s not all about getting the smallest storage volume, it’s about the ‘right’ storage volume that best fits your farm. Regional Councils require storage volumes to be calculated using the Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator (DESC). The DESC has a library of more than 30 years of daily climate data (rainfall and evapotranspiration) for most dairying areas throughout the country, and uses this information to model a soil water balance. The DESC calculates how much effluent is generated each day, and using the historical climate data determines how often soil moisture conditions were suitable for effluent irrigation. If irrigation could take place, it calculates how much effluent would be removed from storage. If effluent irrigation couldn’t take place it calculates how much effluent will be sent to storage. From these calculations it can
determine how much storage you will need. There are many inputs to the DESC that will determine how much storage your farm needs. These include soil risk, water use in the shed, effluent application depths, pump rates, milking season length, herd size, climate, catchment areas, and storm water diversions to name a few. Some of these will be “fixed” on your farm, such as climate, catchment areas, herd size and season length. Others can be variable and up for consideration as a mitigation in reducing storage requirements. You must get involved with whoever is running the DESC for you. Ask them for a variety of scenarios showing the impact of options on storage and your farm’s management. Where do you want to spend your money; on mitigations or extra storage? Get them to run a number of scenarios that help you decide which options you want to pursue - make them earn their money! You can cost all the different options to get an idea of what you want to pay for. These are some useful questions to ask yourself as you work through the DESC: • Do I have any low risk soil on my farm that is not currently in my effluent block? • What would a low depth irrigation system look like on my farm? How easy or hard would it be to manage? • What would a storm water diversion cost to install? What reduction in storage

volume would it give me? • How much water does my dairy shed currently use? • Did they measure/calculate my water use or just use an “industry average”? Using industry average will not result in an accurate calculation for your farm • What would water reduction look like on my farm? • Green water recycling can have huge savings- did my consultant consider this option? • How much storage would I need if I chose not to irrigate over calving? When you do the cost benefit of all the options - don’t forget to include the time it would take to manage your system as it’s pointless to choose options that give you the smallest possible storage requirement, but are a nightmare to manage. CLEARTECH CONTINUES TO PROVE ITS WORTH NOW IN ITS SECOND SEASON, THE ClearTech effluent treatment system installed at Lincoln University Dairy Farm (LUDF) continues to prove its worth. It has saved more than 600,000L of freshwater in a single month just by using the clarified water from the system for yard washdowns. That 600,000L equates to the average daily water use of 3000 people. If adapted across the New Zealand dairy industry, ClearTech effluent treatment systems have the potential to save millions of litres of freshwater. Ravensdown’s product manager for ClearTech, Carl Ahlfeld, says the water saving was an impressive achievement. Other efficiencies have been observed too. “The volume of coagulant required has been less this spring, specifically because the cow hair and older effluent has been kept out of the fresh effluent, an initiative that LUDF implemented this year. This has kept costs down.” ClearTech efficiencies are being duplicated daily with eight other units now operating on dairy farms in Canterbury and the Waikato, and more recently in the transport industry. “We are now cleaning livestock transport trucks with recycled effluent wash from ClearTech, saving millions of litres of fresh water in the process as well as dramatically reducing the
disposal of effluent,” says Carl. “This is both environmentally beneficial and a major cost saving for the industry.” A scientific paper published recently outlined considerable environmental benefits when clarified water from the ClearTech system was applied directly to pasture soil. Compared to untreated farm dairy effluent (FDE), E. coli concentrations leached from the ClearTech-treated effluent and clarified water were reduced by up to 99.99%. Total-P losses from the lysimeters measured 90.5% and 85.7% lower than untreated FDE lysimeters and the dissolved reactive phosphate (DRP) reductions from clarified water and treated effluent were 99.9% and 99.5% respectively. Reductions in phosphate leaching loss can lessen the impact of agriculture on water quality and help when preparing a farm environment plan. The continued innovation and development of ClearTech is the result of a partnership between Lincoln University and Ravensdown, built on robust science with a clear drive to provide smarter farming solutions to reduce environmental impacts in New Zealand. Future innovation for ClearTech is ongoing with the plant undergoing regional testing at the Waikato LIC innovation farm.

He has developed a concept he calls the BioCircle, which shows the important interaction of all activities on the farm. TURN FARM EFFLUENT INTO MEASURED NUTRIENTS EFFLUENT WAS ONCE DISMISSED AS a waste product, yet farm dairy effluent (FDE) can have good levels of nitrogen and potassium, making it a suitable fertiliser for maize and other crops. Effluent “waste” can effectively be recycled - utilising it either on its own or in addition to fertiliser nutrients depending on the paddock history and crop yield targets. When slurry or sludge is applied to land, the solids content also contributes to the soil organic matter. This can be of benefit where paddocks have been repeatedly cropped. What’s more, the nutrients in effluent
applied to land tend to be slow release, with only about 50% of the N and P available in the first year of application. K is almost all available. So, paddocks with a long history of effluent application may have a large ‘bank’ of nutrients in the soil, waiting to be utilised. That’s why such areas show no response to added fertiliser in the first year out of pasture – and why there is an environmental benefit by planting deep-rooted crops such as maize to extract nutrient that otherwise could be lost to waterways. At Hill Laboratories, the team sees effluent testing as a vital part of nutrient

KLIPTANK PRODUCED THE ANSWER TO EFFLUENT storage for dairy farmer Hugh Chisholm, who runs a highly productive 1200 cow farm near Putaruru, Waikato. After years of upgrading his feed pads, covered housing and silage bunkers, the farm had massive concreted catchment areas which put his original effluent system under pressure during heavy rain events. Kliptank constructed a new 4,000,000L effluent storage facility on the highest hill 1.2km away, 40m above the milking parlour. The Kliptank is 45m in diameter and 3m high. Effluent is transferred to the tank through a 180mm pipe. To do this Hugh dug the trench himself and hired a helicopter for the day to shift all the lengths of pipe while a contractor fusion welded it all together. With his new tank Hugh has been able to extend his irrigation system to the entire back end of the farm and can now spread effluent over almost all of his 360ha. The Kliptank was installed on a dished sand foundation with a Centre Base Drain to provide a low point to suck the solids out of. He also installed Kliptank’s patented Klipjet and Crust Buster stirring system – a hydraulic stirring system powered by his 130hp diesel pump which not only blasts the sludge up off the bottom it gets all the solids into suspension before irrigating. At the same time, it also provides much needed aeration to assist the aerobic microbes in breaking down the solids.

CLEVER HYDRANT DELIVERS ON-FARM BENEFITS INSTALLING A SMART EFFLUENT management system that delivers benefits like maximum nutrient utilisation and compliance with council regulations, and takes minimal labour to operate, has to be the aim for dairy farmers. The Larall Smart Hydrant (LSH) from Effluent & Irrigation offers those benefits. It utilises 4-6 medium size Rainguns which are controlled intermittently, meaning a very low average application rate of 1.5mm per hour. It also requires relatively low labour to operate and enables high volumes of effluent to be pumped per session, maximising irrigation opportunity. This offers dairy farmers smarter effluent management control with deferred irrigation, effective utilisation of nutrients, as well as labour savings.
When Reliability Matters.
Failsafe features are also available such as if there is a low or high pressure fault registered, caused by either a leak or blockage, the LSH system will shut down the main effluent pump, giving the farm operator added peace of mind. The low application intensity reflects a ‘little and often’ concept enabling nutrients to be maintained within the plant root zone. This is critical to gain the maximum value of the nutrients produced in effluent and maximise the return on investment. This system also allows irrigation to take place when traditional systems may not because of ponding or runoff risks. When effluent enters the LSH its pressure is activated but only one of the valves is opened at one time. The LSH directs the effluent through the open
valve to the raingun for a set duration, for example 15mins. Once the set time has lapsed, the next valve opens as the open valve closes and continues spreading effluent to the next raingun. Over wetter months, the amount of effluent that goes to each raingun could be based on 10 mins of pumping. Based on a 10-minute period there would be a 50-minute rest between each application. The rest time allows the effluent to be absorbed by the soil which limits ponding and run off and maximises nutrient retention. If the LSH was irrigating two 3ha paddocks, there would be 6 shifts per gun to complete the area. The total application depth is relevant to pumping time and should be based on soil moisture levels. For example, to apply 10mm total depth the pumping time would be 7 hours between shifts. The total pumping time to complete the paddocks (after 6 shifts) would therefore be 42 hours. Pumping approximately 18m³ per hour, this would equal 756m³. When based on a herd size of 500 cows and producing 35m3 per day this is about 21 days of effluent irrigated. In this situation the system can be used once every three weeks for deferred irrigation. If the total required depth is higher, say 15mm, then the pumping time between shifts would be 10 hours. The total volume pumped would be 1080m³ or 30 days effluent. Labour savings are a result of setup time, or trips to the paddock, versus the total volume pumped. A common comparison here is with travelling irrigators and the ‘turnaround time’ required for their given output.

NEW OWNERS FOR ENVIROLINE JASON AND ROZ HARRISON ARE putting their knowledge and past experience in farming to great use as the new owners of Enviroline, renowned for supplying quality linings for a variety of ponds including effluent and decorative. “We wanted our own business as we have a young family. The couple have both been around farms their whole lives. Roz was born on a dairy farm before moving to beef and sheep operations and also worked on horse studs. “I am Te Awamutu born and bred. Getting involved early in a farm effluent system design is always better. “We are happy to get involved at any stage of a project and help design the pond as well through our contacts. Farmers need to account for the soil type, number of cows, and the annual rainfall for a pond to be built correctly.” Ponds need to be constructed with the right material and lined the correct way. You need leak protection and there are a number of technical issues to consider. “It’s not like the old days where you just dug a hole and put a pipe in,” Jason says. There is three layers to the lining and it is important to understand what the end product will look like. Getting everyone involved in the construction of a pond as early as possible can substantially reduce potential delays. “It is good to have everyone such as the earth works guys around the table from day one to discuss the process. That is better than discovering you can’t line a pond because of this issue or that issue.” “I believe we have a high quality product. There is always a cheap option but cheap is rarely the best. NEW POND LINER COMES WITH 20-YEAR GUARANTEE WHEN CANTERBURY DAIRY farmers Nigel and Amy Rutherford of Malbon Dairy Farm chose to upgrade their clay-lined effluent storage pond, they chose Viking Containment to provide advice and the right product. Increased storage capacity and compliance were the key drivers for the pond design, and it also provided a contingency for possible future expansion. The previous storage was only 4-5 days, but their new High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)-lined pond has increased their capacity to 1800m³, providing 20-25 days storage.

Nigel is very happy with the outcome. “In some recent wet weather where the soil capacity was at its maximum, I didn’t have to worry about effluent management issues – it makes the whole operation very efficient and much easier,” he says. The extra storage capacity allows them to put more time and focus into animal health and pasture. The new pond construction involved removal of the existing pond so it was programmed to be completed in the offseason. Earthworks were completed by Roy Hill Construction to a high standard. The excavated pond was 40m x 40m x
3.5m depth with a 2H:1V slope gradient and a 500mm freeboard. The liner system consisted of 1.5mm HDPE Liner, Geotextile protection layer over the subgrade surface, Viking Gas Venting system and Geoladders for safe egress in and out of the pond. The 1.5mm HDPE liner comes in 8.0m wide panels which allows efficient deployment and installation, and was completed in one day. All the seam welding and testing was documented in a comprehensive Quality Assurance Report. For peace of mind and assurance Viking’s HDPE liner also has a 20-year product warranty.
