Mike King - The Overactive Inner Critic The biggest problem facing our people right now is an overactive inner critic. That’s the voice inside all of our heads that has us second-guessing everything we do, the voice of doubt that beats us up. Having an overactive inner critic is not a sign of mental illness, it is a sign that we are normal. Using an unorthodox approach when talking to groups, Mike shares his struggles with his own inner critic and allows people to recognise that everyone has problems and it’s ok to ask for help.

Jose G.Cano - Can Photography Make a Difference? Can photography make a difference? A journey from Humanitarian work to environmental activism and the search for beauty. How can you find beauty when you are surrounded with death and suffering? How do you survive the shock of seen and sharing the tragedies and unfairness of this world? How can photography and the pursuit of beauty help us make this world a better place? These questions have been part of my life and my photography for the last 25 years, and even if I have no answers, I want to share some stories with you.

Richard Wood Richard’s illustrative and painterly style is known around the world. It has a strong narrative with an often moody to dark theme. Richard will briefly cover how and what got him there and share some of the on the edge adventures this path has taken him. From spending nights underground amongst human remains, to photographing some of NZ’s most dangerous gangsters. Much of Richard’s well known story telling work is created rather than found. So Richard will also take you through what this entails, addressing the concept of ‘manipulating the image’ … and doing so in an ever changing industry. There is a fast changing technological world ahead and Richard will discuss how we may need to be prepared for fast change. Richard believes many have their creativity stifled and will take you through a journey of how and when this happens. He will then discuss his “Feel the fear and think it anyway” strategies. Richard will then branch from here and introduce us to methods to help ignite the brain, think outside of the box and create whimsical narratives as a basis for our potential image making. Richard’s presentation will also include a lighting and post production demo to show us some simple yet effective ways to create an illustrative/commercial look in the style that is Richard Wood.

Fiona Andersen - The Business of Wedding Photography Wedding photography can be a challenging yet rewarding experience. Being close to complete strangers on one of their most intimate occasions, can bring anxiety, fear, panic. I have been shooting weddings for over 13 years, during this time I have experienced the most thrilling and emotional times, some great, some not so great. I hope to share all that I have seen and most importantly the things that I have learnt, from very high highs to some sad and lonely times that have brought an extreme amount of self doubt and how I was able to decipher these lows and grow as a person as well as a professional photographer. The process that I take on the wedding day and beyond, how I chat with my couples and how I help them (and myself) to relax on the day. So very excited to be part of the conference and hopefully share stories, knowledge and information to possibly inspire other photographers.

Nikon iris Awards Gala Dinner Join us at the Gala Dinner to celebrate the success of the Iris Awards! This black-tie event is a sell out each year and is the most anticipated evening in the NZIPP calendar. Category winner announcements and the coveted New Zealand Photographer of the Year award. pre-drinks starting at 6.30pm with the event officially beginning at 7.00pm.
Andris and Julian Apse Father and Son Photographers, Andris and Julian Apse take to the stage as a duo, however they do run separate, and quite different businesses. Landscape photography has always been Andris’ passion and has given him the financial freedom to explore the natural world. Apart from making a living from it, landscape photography allows Andris to bring to the attention of New Zealand and the world, what he has found important and meaningful during his photographic career. It may even in some small way, influence others to look around them and appreciate more the natural beauty surrounding us that is often ignored and is being slowly but steadily eroded by a general complacency and land development. Andris’ technique is to isolate from the scenery in front of him, the defining elements that originally attracted his eye. This he feels, is the essence of image making of any kind, the ability to isolate and record a simple, graphic and emotional response to what at times, is a jumble of visual confusion. And, after 10 years of working internationally with the majority of his work in Australia, Covid has put a stop to Julian’s work. What he hadn’t realised is that creating a successful career had taken its toll on him. Chasing the commercial advertising photography dream took him years of hard work to get started. Regular 16 hour days on shoots up to 5 weeks long. Great money, but it was blood money. It took a break to make Julian realise he was burnt out. Andris has been a great inspiration for Julian and a kind ear of wisdom at the end of the phone ... but also a strong advocate of the school of hard knocks and “do it yourself or don’t do it” . Julian is really looking forward to chatting about the influences Andris has had, and comparing it to his time as an advertising photographer in the 80s/90s.

I Am Hope is The Key To Life Charitable Trust, in-school, community, and workplace mental health program. Our aim is to forever change the way the people of Aotearoa think, act, and feel about mental illness and mental well-being. At I Am Hope we’re about normalising the inner critic - the voice inside all of our heads that has us second-guessing everything we do, the voice of doubt that beats us up and tells us we’re failures, that we’re substandard, and even worthless. Having an overactive inner critic is not a sign of mental illness, it’s a sign that we are normal. Our job is to let the people, the youth, the children of Aotearoa know that dealing with the inner critic is something all of us experience everyday of our lives.

Being Human at 100 Being Human at 100 is a project in celebration of both diversity and oneness. We are all united by the same foundational human needs and desires of social connection, love, laughter, good health and meaningful interactions. It must take something special to live to 100, perhaps a tenacious mindset, innate wisdom of one’s body, a close circle of positive support and an abundance of humour. The face at 100 is a map of a life lived fully, the homes and surroundings tell tales of the richness of their lives and the stories told from these wise hearts gift the world with inspiration. The project is born out of a deep passion for people and connectivity in our communities worldwide. The body of work of Centenarians is in progress and will culminate in both a book and exhibitions. To date, Centenarians in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Vietnam, Costa Rica and Cuba have participated in the project. The work is both photographic and written from interviews conducted with each person. Video of each interview captured with the intent that snippets of these will run alongside the work. Being Human at 100, both the photography and stories I see as the ‘heart’ part of the tremendous research that has been done by longevity experts. There is great wisdom, and through compelling photography and stories - more people will connect to these concepts leading to a better world with happier, healthier people.

It may even in some small way, influence others to look around them and appreciate more the natural beauty surrounding us that is often ignored and is being slowly but steadily eroded by a general complacency and land development. My technique is to isolate from the scenery in front of me, the defining elements that originally attracted my eye. This I feel, is the essence of image making of any kind, the ability to isolate and record a simple, graphic and emotional response to what at times, is a jumble of visual confusion.”
“90% of my landscapes are pre-visualised. Prints on my gallery walls need weeks, months or years to achieve. After more than 50 years in the business of photography, I have evolved through all branches of professional photography. I will discuss the importance of being adaptable, recognising dead end trends quickly and moving on before financial disaster hits. Having my son Julian make a career in photography has been beneficial for both of us and it will be fun to pass on our accumulated knowledge. His photography is all action and thrill, mine is more sedentary, like falling asleep in the tussock while waiting for the light. It will be an interesting contrast.”

WORKSHOPS Underwater Photography with Jose G. Cano Bring along your camera and join Jose G. Cano at his incredible underwater studio for a Fine Art Underwater shoot! Jose has one of only two underwater studios in New Zealand – seeing the studio alone is an epic reason to get to this event! Watch Jose from the side of the pool, or down in the viewing window and watch how he works with his model. Jose will run a live shoot for 30 minutes, then each participant will have 5 minutes at the viewing window to photograph the model in the underwater studio – followed by a 60 minute Q&A session. All attendees will be given a PDF with information and resources following the shoot. Please bring a water bottle and summer clothing to this event. It is very hot in the studio so you need to keep yourself well hydrated. Transport is included from Trafalgar Centre to Jose’s studio and back. Meet in the Trafalgar Centre Foyer 15 minutes before your session. **Please note: There are hazards in this studio, including water on surfaces and a ladder to be climbed down to use the viewing window. All attendees must follow the instruction of Jose G. Cano at all times at this event.
