EXECUTIVE UPDATE
President’s Report Catherine Cattanach, GMNZIPP NZIPP Accredited Professional Photographer
As I’m writing this I haven’t yet been home a week after the Nikon Iris Awards and Canon NZ Photography Show in Nelson, and I am suffering serious withdrawal symptoms. I miss our NZIPP whanau already, and am consoling myself by catching up on the livestream recordings of the categories that were being judged in the other room, to try to prolong the buzz. Those of you who didn’t make it to Nelson are probably starting to get heartily sick of all the posts about it, but you know what the solution is, don’t you?! Just come along next year and then you too will be adding to the deluge of posts raving about what a good time you had and the new friends you made. I had written my Gala dinner speech about a week beforehand, and in it I talked about the Presidential Chains, a serious piece of bling that I chose to wear at the dinner in celebration of NZIPP’s history. Each link in the chains is the name of a past President, all of whom took up the baton at different times and did their bit to nurture, build and evolve the institute to keep it relevant in a rapidly changing industry. In my speech I thanked my predecessors for the energy and passion they poured into making the NZIPP an institute I’m proud to be President of. It was just one little line in my speech. But then as our time in Nelson progressed, I found myself wanting to rewrite that part and dwell on it a little longer, because I was REALLY feeling that pride. I was watching all of our different teams and volunteers do their bit so well, collaborating to create something really quite wonderful. It was heartwarming, and I am deeply grateful to every single person who played a role in the event’s success. It really brings home the other point I made in my speech - that the NZIPP is all about the power of the collective. Far from being a group of people in suits sitting around a table in some flash offices somewhere, the leadership of “the Institute” comprises men and women just like you; working photographers scattered around the country, with businesses and families to look after, but who also volunteer some of their time to further the interests of us all as a group. We are a not-for-profit organisation, but we most certainly are for benefit: the whole ethos of the NZIPP is about benefiting professional photographers nationwide. When we pull together, we can create shared resources, educate, inspire, offer practical and emotional support, advocate for better terms and conditions, and set standards in technical, creative and business practice. The NZIPP is by us and for us, and “the institute” can be whatever YOU want it to be. I’d really like to encourage you to put your hand up and get involved. Please don’t think you need to be at the top of your game to contribute. We don’t want homogeneity - we need diversity of opinion and experience. We want the

fresh voices to work alongside those with heaps of experience. We want the input of our student members as well as our life members. If you’d like the training wheels option, I suggest that as a start you join your regional committee and help organise some awesome events in your area. Each region is allocated funds from membership subscriptions, so there are resources available for holding local events, bringing in speakers and so on. It’s just a matter of coming up with ideas for what you want to do, and making it happen. I’d really like to acknowledge all the volunteers and people working hard behind the scenes to make cool stuff happen for NZIPP members. Thank you to Executive Director Extraordinaire Sarah McGregor, our regional representatives and committee members, Accreditation and Education teams, judges, panel chairs and student helpers. Our events team Justine Weatherall and Nicola Wilhelmsen, with help from Peter Allen from Seven Events - boy you made up for our cancelled conference last year!! To our 2021 speakers, epic MC Jase Blair, photographer Dan Childs, judge developer Katherine Williams, hitherto-unidentified IT genius and all-round-nice-guy Paul Jones, Honours Council ring-in Jan Maree Vodanovich, spreadsheet guru Miriam, membership coordinator Amanda Davis, marketing genius Tim Lomax, website developer Claire Birks - thank you all. Last but certainly not least, a massive, massive thank you to our new Honours Council: Tracey Scott, Sharisse Eberlein, Rochelle Dillon, Ian Rotherham and Lizzie Gilmour. You were faced with an array of challenges, including a shorter time frame than usual, and did an outstandingly good job of bringing us our very first combined print and digital Iris Awards and a fantastic Gala dinner. We know how hard you worked, and all the time with smiles on your faces. You guys rock. EXECUTIVE UPDATE
Executive Director Report Sarah McGregor, MNZIPP (Dist) NZIPP Accredited Professional Photographer
Unlike Catherine who wrote her report just a week or so after conference, I’m writing mine the day of publication (nothing new there!) - but, look how much has changed in such a short few weeks.
application through IRD so if you haven’t yet applied, talk to your accountant for more information. Please do continue to share your knowledge about the Covid 19 information, or ask questions in the member community forum.
I’m sitting in my studio in Nelson on day 12 of Level 4 lockdown, knowing I have to get this publication out to you today before the weekly grind of home-schooling and zoom meetings begins once again. But as I sit here and reflect on this time just four weeks ago, I can see how lucky we were to be in-person once again - enjoying ourselves, hugging, laughing and dancing the night away with little care in the world; a luxury New Zealand has had for the best part of 18 months.
We have once again launched a number of memberonly online sessions for the next week in particular and I encourage everyone to get on board with these while we are in Level 4. Richard Linton has organised a business panel event called “Work on your business, not in your business” for Monday 30 August from 7pm. There is an Accreditation Technical Skills Development event on Wednesday 1st September at 11am, and Critique My Image on Thursday 2nd September at 7.30pm - the first of what we hope will be a monthly session where you can submit an image for feedback.
We always knew there was a possibility this would happen around the time of our event, and I do remember at one point preparing to activate our Level 2 plan so the show could go on. Thank goodness we didn’t need to, but it was always in the back of our minds that it might come to that. How lucky we were. And how good did it feel to be back together again? There was something magical about this particular conference and awards - a really amazing vibe throughout, and it’s something you can’t really explain but it does make NZIPP a very unique and special place to be. I joined NZIPP back in 2013 or so and it took me a few years to really see value in my membership because I wasn’t engaged in any regional or national events. I stayed a member for the awards - the cost of entering plus paying membership was the same as entering as a nonmember. And then one day, the conference line-up really piqued my interest. I can’t even remember now who it was in particular that made me want to go, but I went. I was about to set off on a journey with NZIPP. And the stuff that I took away from that conference wasn’t even from the speaker that initially got me there - it was from other speakers I hadn’t expected to learn much from. And it was so much more than just the speakers; it was the learning and networking opportunities at every corner. I came home with so many new friends, skills and goals, and my focus was on getting back the next year. I got to see this happen to some of our first-time attendees this time and it really made me happy to hear the excitement and thrill of their first conference experience. I am excited for their future in photography and where this NZIPP contribution will take them. So now we’re all back at home and for some, this will be a really hard time both personally and professionally. I want you to know that we are here for you, if we can help in any way. We’ve reactivated the Covid-19 living document on the nzipp.org.nz website for anyone who needs a little refresher on information. Also a reminder that the Covid 19 Wage Subsidy and Resurgence payments are open for

The NZIPP Board made use of spare time last week and held a substantial Board meeting to start plans for our next financial year. There are a lot of exciting things happening in that virtual Boardroom, so keep your eye on your email and Facebook posts over the next few weeks for some of those details. In particular, we are hoping to sign the venue contract for our 2022 conference so we look forward to releasing a date and location for that. Our AGM is scheduled for 1pm on Thursday 4th November 2021, however at this stage the location is TBC. We want to keep an eye on the Covid situation before we confirm a location for this event. Official notification of the AGM will be sent out this week. A big part of our Board meeting conversation was around rewarding volunteers, and trying to ease the burden by bringing on more helpers. I promise you all that there are enough jobs to keep everyone busy if you are willing to pitch in and help. We love the excitement and enthusiasm so many of our members bring to us with their wonderful ideas but it does make us a little sad to see so many slip away because we don’t have the human resources to pull them off. If you can give us a little bit of your time as a volunteer, we’d love to hear from you. Many hands make light work, and the more people who pitch in to help, the more awesome stuff NZIPP can do for our members. Maybe it’s a zoom presentation, help with the websites, designing some graphics or something else! Please, please make contact! info@nzipp.org.nz Keep safe, keep well and keep in touch; Sarah McGregor NZIPP Executive Director

MEMBER STORY
The Things People Say Nick Servian, Hon FNZIPP, NZIPP Accredited Life Member
“I realised I had a long list of things people have said to me over the years, and that some of them were worth writing down. Especially the ones with stories attached...” Wellington, New Zealand - I wasn’t there for this one, but I love it: A well-known Wellington photographer had stopped at a red traffic light, when his car stalled and wouldn’t start. When the light turned green, the driver of the car behind started beeping his horn furiously. Finally, my friend got out of his car and walked back to the car behind. He tapped on the window. “Tell you what, champ,” he said, “You go and see if you can start my car, and I’ll sit here and beep your horn.” This same Photographer had another story, about the time he was touring with the All Blacks. He was on an overnight train in Ireland, developing his film in the bathroom washbasin. The pictures ended up a bit too contrasty because the train hit a rough patch of rail, so the film got too much agitation in the developer. Those were the days (not!)) Wellington, New Zealand - It was an ad agency Christmas party, a long time ago. A woman said to me: “Are you married?” “Yes,” I said. “How long have you been married?” “About 35 years.” (See: I told you it was a long time ago…) What?” she said, “To the same woman?” Nick Servian.

MEMBER STORY
Simplifying Business Systems with Andrea Jordan Andrea Jordan - Business Strategist, Writer, Photographer and NZIPP member
Taming Your Inbox Email is a great invention that allows us to communicate easily with our clients and suppliers. That is, until those emails start multiplying while you sleep, like out of control gremlins. Hours and hours of your valuable time is spent fighting fires, filing and quietly fuming. This is NOT why you started your business! It’s time to tame your inbox and get you out taking photos instead. Here are the 5 steps I take my clients through when they book an inbox management session with me: 1. Multiple addresses How many email addresses do you have? This is a simple question but it can highlight an issue right away if you’ve got multiple email address, personal and business, which you have to constantly switch between. Ask yourself what you use each address for, is it necessary to have all of the addresses you have and are your personal and business emails mingled together (making it harder to find the business emails you need)? 2. Identify your problem areas Your inbox didn’t get out of control by itself. It had a helping hand from you. There may be habits you’ve picked up along the way that have been unintentionally causing some of the email overwhelm. Some of the common problem areas I see are: •
FOMO – is your inbox flooded with email newsletters you signed up to? Daily specials from suppliers you no longer use? You meant to read them all but now they’re clogging up your inbox. You’ve been reluctant to delete them because there just might be something valuable there. Use the 80/20 rule to your advantage. 80% of the valuable information you need is likely to come from 20% of those emails, so take a breath and hit the unsubscribe button.
•
Email Tennis - Asking a friend “When are you free?” can make for a lengthy game of email tennis, whereas “Let’s meet at Pom’s on Tuesday at 10am” makes for a much shorter game. Where are you unintentionally extending the email conversations in your business? Would a different style of email work better? Or a quick phone call?
•
Using an online calendar scheduling tool was a game changer for me as I no longer need to email clients to decide on time for their sessions. I send them a link to my calendar and they book in a time that suits them – the tool even sends them automatic reminders.

Opening the same email multiple times – are there emails you’ve opened more than once in your inbox? You opened it when it came in, then didn’t have time to deal with it. You opened it again the next day, but didn’t have all the information you needed to reply. On the third try, the phone rang. Take a look at the way you’re opening emails – you can save a surprising amount of time by having a dedicated time slot where you deal with each email in turn.

3. Folder Structure I’d love to say that the search function in your inbox will always work perfectly, finding the exact email you’re looking for. But that’s not been my experience. Instead of wasting time searching for that elusive email create a folder structure which is tailored to your business. Then be ruthless about moving emails from your inbox into the right folder once you’ve dealt with the email. There is no such thing as a perfect folder structure; there is one that will be perfect for you though. Some of the folders you can consider including are Currents Clients, Potential Clients, Past Clients, Marketing, Business Development, Professional Development and Invoices. Try to avoid having a “miscellaneous” folder as it can easily become the equivalent of an email junk drawer. Don’t know where to put it? Squash it into the junk drawer until it no longer opens. 4. Filters are your friends Filters, or rules, can be used to manage emails you don’t need to deal with right away. By setting up a filter for a particular kind of email, they skip your inbox entirely and go directly to a folder you’ve set up. This means you don’t get distracted by them. If you use filters, be sure to block out reading time in your calendar, or set a reminder on your phone, so those emails don’t get forgotten. You’ll quickly see which emails you actually make time to read, and which you need to unsubscribe from. 5. Be proactive Taking back control of your inbox means being proactive in the way you manage your emails, rather than having your inbox open all day and reacting to each email as it comes in. Research has shown that it takes the human brain 20 minutes to reengage with a task, after being distracted. How much more smoothly would your photo editing go if you weren’t distracted by email notifications? Taming your inbox is going to take time to fix, but it doesn’t need to be endless hours. Nor do you need to hit Select All, then hide them in a folder called “Dumpster Fire”. A couple of hours can make a massive difference. Combine that with new habits about the way you use emails and you’ll regularly see the clear space at the end of your inbox.

WAIKATO/BAY OF PLENTY NZIPP Master of Photography, Christina Vandy-Yamunanathan from Marque Brand Studios in Hamilton tells us about her journey towards her wedding, commercial and real estate business. As a high school student, art was Christina’s favourite subject. However she couldn’t draw to save herself! To make up for this she used to go and take photos of what she was trying to draw then trace over it. In Sixth Form or Year 12, she was finally able to take photography as a subject. She would live in the dark room with her photography teacher writing her notes to get her out of her other subjects. Christina used this time to perfect her craft and by the end of the year she received the award for top photography student. From there she convinced her parents that photography was her future. After a part time job became full-time over summer leading into her Seventh Form year, her parents became nervous that she was enjoying the money and working too much. They flew her to Christchurch for the CPIT (which is now Ara Institute) photography open day to inspire her. Christina went back to Hamilton, contacted her sixth form photography teacher and dusted off her camera. After shooting some documentary images for her application into the Diploma of Digital Imaging and then the Diploma of Professional Imaging, Christina notes that some how she made it into the courses. Christina has now been shooting for 16 years. Her gear bag consists of Canon 5d mk4s with her Sigma 35mm + 100mm as her go to lenses for weddings. She loves to use her Canon 16-35mm to create epic images for her clients that are a little different in perspective while adding in lighting or sourcing a beautiful landscape with an unusual tree or two.

WELLINGTON Art in Public Spaces Photographers’ creativity should not be imprisoned in hard drives. Gallery exhibitions are a great way to showcase our art, but these can have a limited audience. The solution is to bring art to people. This also enables professional photographers to showcase their creativity to a wide audience. The Wellington region of NZIPP is partnering with Art for Everyone and Creative Kapiti (https://www.creativekapiti.nz/) and KiwiBank to hold an exhibition in in a popular working bank (KiwiBank Coastlands, Paraparaumu). The Creative Kāpiti Gallery was established in November 2020 as part of the “Art for Everyone” programme and provides much needed exhibition space for artists by activating spaces in the community with curatorial support. Twelve NZIPP members from across the Wellington region are exhibiting 27 artworks celebrating Our Place – Beauty in Everyday”. Exhibition curator Jenny Siaosi says “In our new, Covid-dominated world, our ability to travel internationally has been severely constrained. And lockdowns have further restricted our mobility. Increasingly, New Zealanders are appreciating their own local environment, whether it is their villages or cities, or their regions, as a place of beauty, recreation and entertainment. The exhibition supports this through a series of photographic artworks from the Wellington region.”

“Photography is an artform that tends to be under-represented in gallery exhibitions and Creative Kāpiti is pleased to be able to support NZIPP members, with support from Kiwibank Paraparaumu and the Kāpiti Creative Communities Scheme”, says Jenna-Lea Philpott, founder of Creative Kāpiti. “We are fortunate to have many award-winning and highly skilled photographers here in Kāpiti and the wider Wellington region and I really encourage business owners and public sector leaders to invest in good photography as part of their work.” Our Place – Beauty in Everyday runs from Monday 9 August to Friday 3 September at the Creative Kāpiti Gallery in Kiwibank Coastlands. Opening hours will be 9am – 4:30pm Monday – Friday . **Subject to Covid-19 requirements**

CANTERBURY/WESTLAND Canterbury Westland was lucky to have our very own Richard Linton present to us on Business. His comment: Just because you didn’t originally get into photography to make money doesn’t mean that you should aim to be a starving artist” He covered costs, pricing and confidence, and opened up the floor for any questions related to any business matter. We had a great turn out, as we have for all our recent meetings, and its great to have so members attend. A couple of highlights include: • Richard taking it in his stride as the bike was brought into his studio part way through his presentation, there wasn’t much room to squeeze it in! • The 11 year old present was allowed to point out if Richard’s language wasn’t quite appropriate. The reward was one dollar. The child was given the option of either an old one dollar note, or a current two dollar coin. I loved their choice of the old note!!
