INFOCUS 2016

NZIPP President Katherine Williams FNZIPP || and AAIPP

Infocus is for everyone, hosted by NZIPP – but we warmly welcome any professional photographer or aspiring photographer who would love to join us.

Infocus is just around the corner and it’s going to be awesome!! Jam packed with International and New Zealand talent Infocus 2016 is going to be the event of the year. The line up includes presenters in a multitude of genres to excite and inspire you to take your pursuit of photographic craftsmanship and your photography business to the next level. In addition to an incredible line up, we have the hub – a chill out space where you can connect with speakers on a more one to one level and ask them the questions you have been burning too. With major photographic brands and retailers on hand at the tradeshow you’ll have the opportunity to touch and feel the gear and products…and if you’re anything like most photographers that’s something we all love to do! And it’s the perfect chance to ask the brand experts any technical questions too. On that note I really want to say a huge thank you to all of our sponsors, it’s with your support that this event is possible. I’m a huge believer that people do business with people… if you don’t already you really should try it. Establish great relationships with suppliers on home soil and enjoy the fulfillment and level of service that comes through this personal approach. Thank you so much to our principal sponsor Epson, our Platinum sponsor CR Kennedy and all of our sponsors and partners who have backed us to make this years event one to remember. In this years program we’ve tried something a little different with Day 1 (Sunday 19th June) kicking off at 10:00am, allowing those from out of town to fly in on the morning of the conference. We all love the social side of Infocus so the Sunday runs until the later time of 8:30pm this year with pizza and drinks included. Day 2 kicks off a little earlier but concludes at 4:00pm, allowing the option for those who would like to keep their accommodation costs to a minimum to stay for just 1 night but to still enjoy

the full conference program. Or, of course if you’re staying for the Iris Awards Gala Dinner there’s plenty of time to get glammed up or suited and booted and ready to celebrate. If you’re contemplating coming but cost is holding you back – remember for the cost of just a couple of corporate headshots, or the fraction of a wedding shoot you could be there and be part of it. Make it happen! When you book in for Infocus (www.infocus.org.nz), please check out and book for some of the other amazing things we have available for you at Exposure (ww.infocus.org.nz/events)…. there’s workshops, live shoots, photo critiques, a photo wall… moving more towards a festival style there’s something for everyone to be excited about photography. Remember a big part of this event has been created by a team of volunteers doing this for the love of it and a desire to keep the photographic community strong …and I want to send a massive thank you to everyone who has helped out along the way – even the little things mean a lot to us! As many of us are small businesses (often ‘1 man bands’), I truly believe being part of this event is the invigorative tonic that we often need and it is just so incredibly valuable. Then to share it with such an amazing bunch of people is just priceless! Infocus is for everyone, hosted by NZIPP – but we warmly welcome any professional photographer or aspiring photographer who would love to join us. Exposure is jam packed with events for all levels of photography interest and we’d love you all to encourage friends and family to come along take a look at what the photographic profession is all about and share in our love for the absolute magic that is photography! See you there.

THE

The Infocus Conference is the only major annual event for photography professionals in New Zealand. The Iris Awards judging is held for three days prior to the conference, to maximise the benefit, and minimise time out of the office for both members and sponsors VENUE alike. Infocus provides a forum for the New Zealand professional photography industry to come together to achieve a number of objectives: • To celebrate the craft of professional photography • To discuss important issues facing the industry • To provide professional development for photographers • To create networking opportunities between suppliers and photographers • To raise the profile of the Institute and photographers across New Zealand. The Infocus Conference incorporates an invaluable Industry Exhibition, Gala Awards dinner - to celebrate the Iris Award winners. We encourage you to make the most of this valuable opportunity, to network with major players, be actively involved in the conference, enjoy all that Wellington has to offer, and in particular utilise the social functions to interact and exchange ideas with delegates.

I get a lot from photography, and connection is the major one. It’s my way of being able to connect with the world.

PASSIONATE, CONNECTIVE, JOYFUL, ADVENTUROUS AND ROMANTIC. If you asked me to describe myself and what I do in five words. You know when you are just fully enthralled by something, not like a hobby or a pastime activity, like something you are obsessed with, that you can’t go a day without thinking about. Pure passion, I’m talking about wake up in the morning thinking about it and going to bed thinking about it. I might have a bit of an addictive personality and a competitive drive, but I’m a country boy at heart. On the surface nothing seems to phase me, but deep down I have a burning desire to create something that can make a difference. A humanist if you will, but one at a time starting with the people around me. If I can make a difference to people in some way, my rationale gives me purpose, direction and the confidence to exist in the foreground where anxiety wants to make me drift to the background.

Jonathan Suckling Wedding Photographer

I’m a guy who is crazily passionate about photographing weddings - weird, I know. I love making people laugh, spontaneous fits of interpretive dance and great conversations. Jonathan is based in Auckland, NZ and jumped into wedding photography in 2014 at 18, two years on and he’s already built himself a solid business and made a name for himself in the industry, Specialising in weddings. To say that Jonathan Suckling makes wedding photography fun, doesn’t even scratch the surface of his approach. Jonathan dances and jokes his way into capturing genuine, beautiful emotions and makes sure everyone around him is always having a good time. His unorthodox methods went viral when a video taken of Jonathan shooting a wedding received over 20 million views and hundreds of thousands of shares. Far from being a gimmick though, his methods create an atmosphere that enables him to build relationships with and connect with his clients; and together along with them build the story of their special day. He loves making people laugh, spontaneous fits of interpretive dance, great conversations, watching funny #internetz, jumping off things (into water) and eating good food. “Most people think you need an expensive camera to make good photos. But the truth is...you just need good dance moves,” Be prepared to be challenged, have your perspective refreshed, and exercise your stomach muscles. Who knows, maybe this pup can teach the old dogs some new tricks.

IRIS PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS

Honours Council Update Kaye Davis GMNZIPP, MAIPP II, MCGD - Chair of the NZIPP Honours Council On behalf of the Honours Council Team; Blair Quax, FNZIPP, Accredited Wedding Photographer Esther Bunning, GMNZIPP, Accredited Wedding and Portrait Photographer Paul Daly, FNZIPP, Accredited Commercial Photographer.

The Iris Professional Photography Awards are literally just around the corner and likely most of you have already completed your online entry registration, and perhaps even packed your prints and sent them away. Now comes the anxious waiting period! You have put your heart and soul into your entries and now it is out of your hands as you await the judge’s decision. The judging process involves a panel of five judges (with a few in reserve for rotation during the category) overseen by a Panel Chair and Assistant Panel Chair. The judges themselves having been selected and invited to judge based on their expertise, gained through years (sometimes decades) of involvement in photography and the awards system. The selection also based on their capability to judge across a wide range of photographic genre. Once the panel are seated the judges are presented with an image, in the form of a print, and are given a set length of time to evaluate and score the image. This scoring is determined through an averaging of all five scores the judges enter into the system, allowing for the opinion of each judge to count towards the overall score. Sometimes judges will be very close in this opinion each scoring within a few points of each other, at other times the highest scoring and lowest scoring judges may be 5, 10 or even more points away from each other.

42

Infocus 2016 / eMagazine of the NZIPP

Where scores are significantly disparate a challenge is triggered meaning judges then have the opportunity to debate and defend the scores they have given an image. The debate starts with the highest scoring judge presenting his/her views on the image, followed by the lowest scoring judge and at time a third judge will also be called on to comment; each drawing on their knowledge and experience and knowledge to articulate their opinion of the image. When the debate concludes each judge has the opportunity to adjust their initial score, based on the insight they have gained from the comments of other judges. This highlights the merits of having a panel of judges, as no one judge has all the answers and a good judge will always be open to the opinion his/her fellow judges bring to the forum, based on their individual knowledge and experience. So what are the judges looking for? The criteria used to judge an image fits into three main areas, that of the technical, emotional and aesthetic qualities. Firstly, the technical qualities focus on how the content of an image has been handled, and the appropriateness of the choices made by the entrant, including control of lighting, exposure, composition, timing of the capture, perspective, focal length, format and dimension. When evaluating the emotional aspects,

judges look at the communication or narrative within an image, its visual impact, the idea or concept and if they are seeing something fresh and different, or a new perspective on something that they may have seen before. Lastly is the aesthetic approach, where aspects such as appropriateness of the sharpness, tonal range, colour rendition, standard and amount of postproduction, paper choice, printing and presentation are all considered.

not remember to log onto your computers and listen to the online streaming. Links to the live streaming will be placed on the NZIPP Facebook Page and Iris Q & A group. Now all that’s left is for us to watch this space for the announcement of the 2016 New Zealand Professional Photographer of the Year - could this be YOU?

The final score an image receives determines whether it is presented with a Gold (90 - 100), Silver (80 - 89) or Bronze (78 - 79) award, or whether it sits within the Professional Standard or non-professional standard range (50 - 77). While everyone vies for an award winning image, this doesn’t always happen, and if this does happen it’s important to remember the learning that comes from the judging process. This learning comes not just through your own entries but in carefully listening to the comments across the entire judging, taking in the those things that really make an image stand out. The experience is an opportunity to take away further knowledge, apply it to your and ultimately try again next year. Hopefully most of you will be able to make it to the live judging at Shed 6, Queens Wharf in Wellington, as mentioned this is an invaluable learning experience, if Infocus 2016 / eMagazine of the NZIPP
