First Impressions: Mt Roskill’s Inspiring Students By Tania Safi, Intern at the Peace Foundation NZ

Mount Roskill Grammar School has a long history with Leadership Through Peer Mediation (LtPM) trainings; the school has been involved with the programme for 24 years now. In 2014, the Peace Foundation awarded them the "Excellence in Peace Education Leadership" award for their incredible commitment through the years. I was lucky enough to be given the chance to participate to an LtPM training there within my first week of working for the Peace Foundation, last March. Not only did the school seem to perfectly embody the values our organization promotes through the friendliness of the students and the positive messages everywhere around the school, but I thought seeing such amazing involvement from sixteen-years-olds was very inspiring.

Top Tips: How to keep the Peer Mediators motivated • Have a smaller team and a regular roster – all Peer Mediator's should be out on the playground once a week not to get bored and to keep training

• Let Peer Mediators apply for the job, have a contract/mediators agreement • Use Badges as motivation—if they do training and a term on duty they

And REMEMBER: When the Peer Mediator’s get made redundant this can be a sign of a peaceful school where students from all levels are doing their own problem solving.
