Although he only launched the fund last year, it is already improving the lives of thousands of children. You can read about it on page 6.

The next test
After nearly 20 years making global rugby history, former All Black Dan Carter is entering a new phase of life.
nzsothebysrealty.com 6
It’s no secret that childhood development is a subject All Blacks legend Dan Carter is incredibly passionate about.
At the time of our interview, the retired rugby star is fresh from Fiji, where he was asked to speak at the Pacific Early Childhood Development Forum in front of leaders from 15 countries about his hopes and plans for children in the Pacific.
In partnership with UNICEF, Dan also visited local kindergartens and schools, a task which he describes as a “pretty eye-opening experience.”
“These trips always amaze me,” he says. “I love seeing the energy of the children, even when they don’t have access to clean water or nutritious food – sometimes they don’t even have a roof over their head. But if I bring a rugby ball, they just want to play and have fun. I walk away feeling
really inspired. Here I was thinking I was having a bad day, then I look at these children laughing and smiling and it’s very contagious. It gives me the motivation to do more.”
As a father of four boys, Dan comprehends the importance of raising kids in a happy, healthy and free environment.
“When you become a parent it’s a natural instinct to want to protect all children,” he says. “They are the future and I see that through the eyes of my children. But many kids in NZ and the Pacific have a very tough upbringing. I’m in a fortunate position to use the success of my rugby career to help shine a light on a few important projects for these children who need our help.”
Dan has been a UNICEF ambassador for eight years and as part of that role he has been deployed on international field trips, visiting places such as Syrian refugee camps in
Property Style 7 Change Makers
Jordan. But last year Dan decided to level up his philanthropic goals and create his own fund, the DC10 Fund.
“I had a vision of encouraging kids to live to their full potential, unleash their dreams and enjoy a childhood like I had,” he explains. “The DC10 Fund means I can handpick the projects I’m passionate about.”
The three core pillars of the DC10 Fund are water sanitation, children’s rights and natural disaster emergency relief. As well as practical assistance throughout the year – such as supplying clean water to schools, early childhood centres and medical centres in the Pacific – the DC10 Fund donated $500,000 to support Tongan children immediately after the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano eruption.
In NZ, the DC10 Fund is piloting some resources
on children’s rights in schools, and Dan hopes to further advocate for the rights of Kiwi kids.
“I wanted to start with home and the Pacific. They’re our neighbours and a lot of my All Blacks teammates were of Pacific Island heritage,” he says. “But as the fund grows, we want to be able to help children all over the world.”
The DC10 Fund has raised more than $1 million since it was established in March 2022 – much of it donated via last year’s Kickathon event – and Dan is planning another high-profile fundraising initiative later this year.
“It will be another exciting event – I can’t give too much away yet but it will be something around the Rugby World Cup,” he confirms. “It’s been difficult asking people for donations while going through a global pandemic and a challenging time economically, but I’m hugely grateful for the
nzsothebysrealty.com 8
generosity and support of New Zealanders. It’s mind-blowing to think that we have already raised well over a million dollars.”
It’s this humbleness and authenticity that has no doubt been a factor in Dan’s immense popularity – as well as his record-breaking talents as a first five-eighth. A natural leader, Dan touches on some of the secrets to his success in his new book, The Art of Winning “It’s been a fun process to help me figure out how this next chapter of my life looks, postrugby,” he says. “I was proud of what I was able to achieve in my playing career but now I’m back on the start line and figuring out what’s going to drive me over the next 20 years. It’s an exciting time.”

Modern maximalism
nzsothebysrealty.com 10
Auckland interior designer Kirsten Ford relays the latest trends for luxury New Zealand homes.
The definition of a trend is ‘a general direction of change in a situation or in the way people are behaving,’ and interior designer Kirsten Ford is tasked with keeping up with these changes more than most. Styling the interiors of some of New Zealand’s most opulent homes, she is the personification of what’s hot and what’s not.
“I would describe my own personal style as both contemporary and classic, with attention to stylish detailing,” she says. “But my passion is creating spaces that are tailored to each homeowner’s personal story and lifestyle –with a little bit of an edge, of course.”
Property Style 11 Architecture & Design
Here, Kirsten shares some of the global trends she’s seeing emerge in NZ homes and what to watch out for in ‘23/24.
Not-so-subtle style
“During the pandemic there was a need for comfort and practical casualness. We’re now seeing a trend towards more formality in our style, more detail and more luxury. It’s not quite a maximalist style, but it is a departure from the minimalism seen in previous years. We’re expressing ourselves with careful layering of textures and shapes, rather than through pattern and print – it’s a more grown-up, polished style. I’m calling it ‘modern maximalism’.”
Social spacing
“For those with the luxury of space, dedicated rooms for collecting and enjoying wine can be one of the most loved features of a home. In other homes, there is an established trend towards elevating areas of a kitchen, dining or living room by creating an at-home bar area to mix a favourite cocktail, display a collection of gins or pour a prized pinot noir. Often these areas are built in with custom cabinetry, beautiful open glass shelving and accent lighting to create the perfect place to entertain and relax.
The most fun and memorable home entertaining areas will tell a story of their owners – channelling a favourite winery, echoing the vibe of a favourite bar discovered on a travel adventure or a fusion of places and experiences with the best memories.”
Embracing the outdoors
“One trend we’re loving for the outdoors is the use of lighting – even portable lamps – which give a ‘new luxe’ feel when viewing a garden from both outside and inside. I’m also loving the addition of pool cabanas to outdoor areas. Yes, they offer a practical seating area, shade from the sun and are a perfect entertaining space, but they also completely elevate an outdoor area. Plush cushions, drapery and lanterns dress these spaces for poolside perfection.”
Earth-inspired tones
“As we embrace comfort and wellness, we are gravitating towards rich, warm neutrals – much earthier shades than the cool grey tones we’ve favoured for years. Whites are creamier, accented with all shades of taupe, caramel and brown. As we become more confident and expressive with colour, we’re seeing a trend towards accents which are bolder and more saturated; rich reds in cherry, berry, wine, and all shades of green, especially ocean, leaf, forest and the brightest Kelly green.
I’m loving the more dramatic monochromatic trend, where the trim is painted to match the walls. Instead of using white trim and ceilings, bold colour is used throughout. To make a real fashion statement, layer the colour through textures and textiles in similar tones.”
Skip the Scandi
“The Scandi trend of painting every wall white, with blonde timber floors, styled with a white rug and white sofa is dated. Spaces are now warmer and richer, more colourful and personalised. As the antithesis of minimal Scandi style, favourite tones and selected patterns are layered through walls, soft furnishings and accessories. It’s the fusing of fashion and interiors where pattern, colour and texture create a more bespoke, opulent and slightly eclectic look. For the not-so-bold, colour and patterns can be layered on top of white walls and neutral floors.”
nzsothebysrealty.com 12
Home gyms
“One of the most visible trends sparked by the pandemic is the creation of dedicated spaces for exercising. In these areas we consider lighting, ventilation, linking to home automation for music and also the ambience, i.e. styling a fun, personalised space to work out in. The areas aren’t necessarily big, but design tricks like mirrored panelling or the right wallpaper can provide a feeling of spaciousness.”
Unexpected elegance
“I love that bold marble and stone are being used in new ways. We’re seeing stone with exaggerated veining and dramatic colouring – and it’s being used on surfaces like door frames, windowsills, feature walls and mouldings, as well as cleverly in kitchens and bathrooms.”
Greener choices
“Fast furniture is something we are rejecting in favour of pieces offering quality, longevity and uniqueness. As we all become more environmentally conscious and more thoughtful with our purchases, there is less impulse buying. People are favouring NZ brands who design with locally sourced materials for our unique antipodean lifestyle.”
Well workspaces
“Now that working from home has become a permanent way of life, there is a much greater demand for dedicated home office spaces –
often multiple spaces for different household members to productively work. While high on functionality, these spaces are now very personalised, reflecting the taste of the owner. The most requested feature is a background that will look fabulous on Zoom!”
Curves ahead
“Rounded, organic shapes are welcoming and calming. They soften a room but also connect us to nature and the outdoors. Curves are dominating furniture trends, from subtle detailing on chair arms to round coffee and dining tables, or a fully curved sofa. The curved sofa is a versatile piece, encouraging more connection and conversation than the traditional sofa setting around a television. But above all, curved pieces imply comfort and softness – likely to be a trend we’ll see a lot more of.”
Mixing metals
“Bronze, gold and copper have been the metals of choice for a while but we are seeing a trend for using a mix of different metals to create a more dramatic look. Mixed metals can be used in a variety of ways, from small accents to large statement pieces. We love matte black with antique brass, satin brass with polished nickel, and oil-rubbed bronze with copper. Our rule to mixing metals is to use two and no more than three finishes in one space, and while it’s okay to mix both polished and matte finishes, keep all the plumbing and tapware the same.”

For more than 250 years, Sotheby’s has been in the business of coveted luxury. From fine wine and fashion to art and real estate, Sotheby’s and Sotheby’s International Realty are renowned for the buying and selling of premium products and best-in-class homes. Here are some of the recent high-achieving sales facilitated by Sotheby’s.
Art
A Francis Bacon portrait of Lucian Freud, known officially as Study for Portrait of Lucian Freud ( ), was recently sold by Sotheby’s London for a recordbreaking NZ$84.5 million, the highest price a singlepanel Bacon painting has earned to date.
One of René Magritte’s famed L’empire des lumières (Empire of Light) ( ) canvases sold approximately $126 million, also at Sotheby’s London. The sale price was almost three times the highest price at auction for any work by the Belgian surrealist.

Apparel
During an epic online auction, one bidder paid $14.8 million for the jersey soccer legend Diego Maradona wore when he scored the controversial Hand of God goal against England in the 1986 World Cup. The bid represents the highest price ever paid at auction for a piece of sports memorabilia. Meanwhile, the white in-flight jacket Buzz Aldrin wore during the Apollo 11 mission to the moon (his first mission to the moon) sold for $4.5 million, making it the most valuable American space artefact ever sold at auction.
Gems
With the $92.3 million sale of a Williamson Pink Star Diamond ( ), one of the rarest and most valued coloured diamonds, a world record was set. The 11.15-carat diamond was auctioned by

Sotheby’s Hong Kong and is the second-largest pink diamond to appear at auction. It achieved both the world auction record price per carat for any gemstone or diamond and the second most valuable jewel or gemstone ever sold at auction.
Wine
The personal wine cellar of Prince Robert of Luxembourg ( ), the CEO and chairman of Bordeaux empire Domaine Clarence Dillon, was auctioned in May 2022 and is considered to be the largest quantity of wine coming directly from châteaux cellars to ever be offered for charity. The record $9.9 million collection comprised more than 4,200 bottles split among 182 lots, and the proceeds of the auction went directly to supporting medical research and treatment for mitochondrial-related diseases.
Handbags
Hermès Birkin and Kelly Bags have dominated the list of record-breaking bags sold at auction since 2020. In September 2022, a Hermès Kelly Bag sold for a record $555,182 at a Sotheby’s Paris auction.
The Himalaya Retourne Kelly 25 ( ) crocodile-skin handbag in mother-of-pearl white set a record price for a bag sold at auction in Europe, selling for almost three times the Sotheby’s presale estimate. The previous European record was set by a Hermès Himalaya Birkin 35 that sold for around $331,000 in 2019.
In April 2022, Sotheby’s set the record for any regular leather Birkin sold at auction with the possibly unique Birkin 25 example with a metallic silver chevre body and metallic bronze piping for $219,456, which was sold in Hong Kong.
Cars
An ultra-rare 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé ( ) was auctioned at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, and sold with RM Sotheby’s for $229 million, making it the most expensive car ever sold. The winning bid on this car, one of only two created in 1955, was made by a British car collector, advisor, and dealer on behalf of an unnamed client. The coupé surpassed the previous record for a car sold at auction by more than $150 million.

Imaginary play
Wellington’s Wētā Workshop is one of New Zealand’s finest exports.
When Wētā Workshop won two Academy Awards for its work on The Lord of the Rings in 2001, it catapulted the Kiwi company to international stardom.
Since then, the visionary business has been synonymous with creativity and innovation, utilising the latest technology to intricately craft everything from Thor’s iconic costume to art installations at an upscale Chinese shopping complex.
Wētā Workshop head of manufacture Rob Gillies ensures the company is up to date with the latest cutting-edge tech and oversees the design and fabrication of thousands of movie props, sculptures and art installations.
“Our mission is to make cool stuff and with a workshop full of artists, that’s exactly what we do. We bring imaginary worlds to life for the global entertainment industry, as well as immersive visitor experiences,” he says. “For us, providing an environment where clients feel comfortable to allow us to take risks and push the boundaries is crucial – we want to ‘wow’ them with our work.”
nzsothebysrealty.com 20
Wētā Workshop’s Rob Gillies.
Founded in the back room of a Wellington flat by Sir Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger in 1987, Wētā Workshop is a brand built on excellence. Working with Sir Peter Jackson in its early years (Peter owned the Wētā Digital division of the company, which he sold in 2021) Wētā Workshop has designed and created props and costumes for Hollywood blockbusters such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Avatar and Taika Waititi’s two Thor films.
“I heard Richard Taylor say the other day, ‘Strive for creative immortality’, and that’s something I really like as an idea,” says Rob. “We don’t think of ourselves as a film company, we’re a community of artists who strive to share their artistic offerings with the world. This happens to be through the medium of film, experiences, collectables, and games. Art underpins all our aspirations and everything we do.”
While the company may have cut its teeth on films, commissions such as the Haikou International Duty-Free Shopping Complex, in which they created a fully immersive and interactive art experience inside the mall, have been projects that enable the team to flex their creative muscle. The same can be said of the emotionally raw, life-like Gallipoli: The Scale of our War exhibit at Te Papa or the New Zealand Liberation Museum – Te Arawhata experience, which opens in France later this year.
“Approximately 80% of our film work would be from international markets. A large percentage of our ‘location-based experience’ clients are also international,” adds Rob. “But like any Kiwi company, our location can be a challenge. We’re down the bottom of the South Pacific so some clients won’t consider us due to our proximity. However, that’s changing – we have really strong shipping options, and you can fly to Los Angeles overnight. Zoom meetings have also made the world smaller.”
Today, Wētā Workshop has five Oscars and two BAFTAs to its name, as well as more than 300 staff based at its Miramar headquarters. It’s also a strong player in the tourism field, with visitor experiences in Auckland and tours of the workshop in Wellington.
“Our newest tourism attraction, Wētā Workshop Unleashed, opened in Auckland in 2020 with the idea of encouraging creativity and inspiring the next generation of creative Kiwis,” says Rob.

Locals’ guide to Wellington
Where’s home for you?
I have lived in the leafy suburb of Khandallah on the edge of the ‘balcony’ of our magnificent Wellington Harbour basin for many years. The basin holds special memories for me as it was the view my grandparents and then parents also enjoyed from their homes.
What’s your favourite local restaurant or café?
Olive on Cuba Street. The aesthetic out the back is junglelike, with huge palms and pots allowing diners privacy, with the green swathe of plants almost appearing to envelope you on entry.
What’s the best location for a scenic walk or run?
The stunning Wellington Botanical Gardens Sculpture Walk. What’s your favourite local event?
CubaDupa celebrates the vibrancy, diversity and creative spirit of Wellington at a special annual arts festival in March.

NZSIR Wellington sales associate Debs Metson reveals her picks for the best of Wellington.
Glen Jones shares an update on the local property market.
There are five specific markets that we cover in the immediate Wellington area; Wellington City, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua City and Kapiti. We have certainly seen enquiry level and open home numbers increase in all areas over the last couple of months.
Although the general activity level we are seeing is not close to what it was near the market peak, it is significantly higher than what we witnessed last year. Similarly, we are seeing more first home buyers re-enter the market after quite a long absence, no doubt due to the easing of LVR restrictions. Transactional activity is certainly on the way up, but buyers are extremely well versed with the market now and what money can buy where. Therefore, if a home is priced right – it will sell. The days-to-sell average around the region ranges from 60 days (in Lower Hutt) to 41 days in Wellington City. This has fallen some distance from when the market was at its most challenging point, which is a positive sign.
It is my opinion that the market in the Wellington region has ‘bottomed out’ and that the worst is now behind us. We don’t expect to see further price declines.
There has been good news recently related to inflation, with signs like US inflation falling below 5% for the first time in two years. In the UK, even though inflation has been in excess of 10% recently, it is expected to fall sharply and drop to below 5% by the end of this year. If inflation starts to be pegged back across the globe, we know that interest rates will be at or near their peak, with a likelihood of falling back somewhat later next year – all good news for the housing market and for market confidence generally.
There will be some more uncertainty later this year in NZ, as there usually is around election time. This is why it’s more critical than ever for vendors to select a trusted, experienced real estate agent.
The prestige, strength, heritage and global reach of the Sotheby’s International Realty brand is without rival. Regardless of price point, it gives us greater power and options when positioning our clients’ properties, leading to exceptional results.
Ultimately, a successful outcome is directly linked to presentation and marketing. Add in a qualified and knowledgeable local agent – as well as the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty local, national and international networks – and it makes for a formidable team, in any market.
What’s the best part about living in Wellington?
It’s hard to pick one – it’s the acceptance of diversity and culture, its fantastic array of bars and restaurants, and its accessibility to the arts, from international and local ballet to opera and visiting performers. The compact nature of the city dramatically features housing resolutely positioned on the sides of cliffs –it’s a real eye-opener to first-time visitors.

4 bed | 3 bath | 2 car
Floor: 410 sq m | Land: 84,275 sq m
The moment you approach the driveway, you know you're in for something special. Nothing can prepare you for the experience of arriving at this spectacular property and processing the sheer magnificence of what lies in front of you. The views at 1025 Taupo Bay Road are awe inspiring and surely rank among the top coastal waterfront properties in New Zealand.
As the dawn light begins to illuminate the eastern horizon over the water and the mist rises out of Whangaroa Harbour, rolling over the imposing cliffs of Kowhairoa Headland, until the sun sets over the western hills painting them in hues of gold, the vistas from every aspect of this property are truly breathtaking.
Set high on the northern hillside of Taupo Bay, the property is 8.43ha of prime secluded waterfront land with private beach access via a stunning native bush track. Available for the first time since 2004, the property features a four bedroom Californian lodge style cedar home, designed to take full advantage of the commanding oceanfront position. Boundary lines are indicative only.

QUEENSTOWN
53 Jeffery Road, Crown Terrace
Price by Negotiation
nzsothebysrealty.com/QBS12791
Land: 83.3326 ha
Sitting in pole position on the desirable Crown Range, this large rural lifestyle parcel is one of the larger land holdings offered for sale in Queenstown for many years, representing a unique Jewel in the Crown.
Queenstown's Crown Terrace is considered "dress circle" to discerning buyers looking for true rural amenity, yet close to all that nearby Arrowtown has to offer.
Jeffery Road is a quiet dead-end rural road with access granted via a private gate at the end of this quiet country lane. The privacy this affords is hard to find in Queenstown.
Elevated and away from the hustle and bustle, this property currently operates a well developed deer farm. As such, the land has been deer fenced into 14 paddocks with one large native gully block. There are well established shelter belts, reticulated stock water and other farming infrastructure.
Sitting on the front row of the Crown Terrace is a separate and special title providing for one of the more desirable building locations in the District. Privacy, extensive rolling terrain, views and three existing duck ponds are the foundations of a special property worthy of a new owner, with plans to secure their future in rural Queenstown.

Set in the foothills of The Remarkables, Pokapu embraces the finest aspects of luxurious mountain living, privacy and space.
Michael Wyatt's award-winning architectural design is bold in character yet sits gently on the 40 ha (more or less) estate. Gibbston Valley schist and tilt slabs have been seamlessly blended with exotic hardwoods, polished concrete floors and glass walls, ensuring this timeless masterpiece has a permanency that will be adored by generations to come.
A mountain tarn laps the face of the house where walls of glass give access to sun-drenched decks. An entertainer's kitchen and dining area opens seamlessly to outdoor entertaining decks, suspended gracefully over the water. The living room, with walls of schist and glass, showcases spectacular mountain and lake views, with an open fire providing an abundance of winter warmth. Three en-suited bedrooms, a family room and a library retreat with open fire also share the tarn.
