The recent cut in the official cash rate means interest rates are likely to dip further, giving buyers a boost in confidence and driving that familiar spring buzz in the market.

If you’re an investor, it’s worth noting that things are shifting in your favour, too. Banks are more eager to lend, interest deductibility is back, and there have been some positive updates to the Residential Tenancies Act.

While sale prices have remained stable - thanks to a good amount of stock on the market - there’s a growing sense of optimism that is noticeable across the country.

The Kiwi connection

Award-winning journalist Paddy Gower talks to Rebecca Williamson about his next moves in news.

Patrick Gower is on the comeback trail. Although, as one of New Zealand’s most celebrated journalists, many would say he never left the tracks, despite the abrupt shutdown of Newshub, where Patrick – better known as Paddy, or PG – reported on the country’s biggest stories for 14 years.

His popularity hasn’t waned since his swift exit from mainstream TV screens in July, with a couple of fans stopping him for a yarn or a fist pump during our Property Style photo shoot at QT Hotel in Auckland.

“They usually just come up to me and say, ‘This is the f***ing news’,” he says.

The jibe is in reference to a line from a 2014 skit, which went viral around the world and made Paddy a household name. Ten years later, the catch phrase has come in handy for Paddy’s new biography – This Is The F#$%ing News – and an upcoming nationwide tour of the same name. And yes, the phrase has been trademarked for PG use only.

The book represents somewhat of a silver lining for Paddy, who signed up for it before international Newshub bosses announced they were closing the operation. At the time, he was busy with the TV series

Patrick Gower Has Issues and visiting Antarctica to film the documentary, Patrick Gower: On Ice, so he enlisted his good mate and long-time journalist Eugene Bingham to write the book on his behalf.

“It was almost like something, somewhere was saying, ‘Hey, you’re going to need a book to come out later this year as you won’t have much else on’,” he jokes. “But it has been a great experience and an awesome collaboration with Eugene. We had a lot of fun and I laughed and cried a bit. It’s an interesting process, you’ve got to expose a lot of yourself.”

Paddy had a few motivating factors for writing the book. The title was already a given, and he’d kept a collection of funny, often scandalous, stories from his career as TV3’s political editor. But most importantly, he saw an opportunity to share some common ground with everyday Kiwis, a certain comradeship of, ‘I’ve been through it too, mate’.

“I knew I would be able to talk about things that people can relate to such as mental health, feeling bad about the way they look, carrying things from childhood bullying, burnout from being workaholics, cancer … all of these things are common for many of us. I thought that

if I could put these parts of my life together, it might just be able to help someone,” he says.

This rings particularly true since revealing his rollercoaster relationship with alcohol on his 2022 documentary Patrick Gower: On Booze. On camera and in real life, he committed to sobriety and has now clocked up more than 1000 days without alcohol.

Paddy didn’t even reach for a beer when Newshub closed. He did, however, toy with the idea of becoming a lawyer “for about a day” but decided that, at age 47, he wasn’t going to let his journalistic skills go to waste. Those skills had enabled him to connect with all walks of life, from presidents and prime ministers to everyday community members.

“Connect” is a word that Paddy uses a lot. In fact, it’s now the foundation for his new role at Stuff, and as a journalist-comedian-presenter for his upcoming nationwide tour. In this chapter of his life, he wants to focus on positive news – human interest stories on people overcoming the odds, incredible business ideas and people doing the mahi for their community.

It’s also a step into entrepreneurship. With the new book, contracting to Stuff as a reporter and selffunding the The F#$%ing News tour, he’s taking charge of his own destiny during what is a tumultuous time for mainstream media.

“Positive news is my new kaupapa – I want to go around the country spreading positive vibes,” he says.

“I’m on a mission to help connect NZ and part of that means going to see everybody. The tour will be a mix of journalism, stand-up comedy and motivational speaking. To the best of my knowledge, nobody has ever done anything like this before. I reckon Kiwis will love it.” ◊

Happy trails

Lakes, mountains and an incredible atmosphere are the incentives for one of NZ’s most spectacular runs.

Every year in Queenstown, the third weekend of November is abuzz with visitors. Athletes young and old, professional and amateur, descend on the resort for the annual New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon which, this year, takes place on Saturday, November 16.

Not only does the event – encompassing a 10km, half marathon and full marathon race – have a reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful running courses, the Queenstown Marathon represents the second-busiest two days of the year for the town, following New Year’s Eve.

The high-energy weekend injects around $20 million into the economy, bolstering local businesses and creating a celebratory vibe in amongst the mountains.

NZSIR Managing Director Mark Harris says the company has been involved with the event since 2016 and its title partner since 2020.

“The Queenstown Marathon is one of the highlights of the year for us as a company,” he says. “It’s a premium event that aligns with our brand well, it’s in our hometown and where our national headquarters remain, and it’s always fantastic to see our team members getting involved and achieving their goals.

“It’s also an important weekend for the Queenstown Lakes District as a whole.”

Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Sharon Fifield agrees.

“We love the opportunity to showcase our scenery and trails to the thousands of runners that arrive in Queenstown from around NZ and the world,” she says. “Spring is a beautiful time to visit our district, and our local businesses will be ready to welcome the athletes enjoying some well-deserved refreshments and relaxation after they’ve conquered their race.”

More than 10,000 athletes participate in the Queenstown Marathon, with nearly 90% of them visiting from outside of the Queenstown Lakes District.

Destination Queenstown Chief Executive Mat Woods says it’s the perfect time to show off NZ’s best attributes in one of our quieter tourism periods.

“The Queenstown Marathon not only brings an economic boost to the region but provides a great opportunity to showcase Queenstown to key domestic and Australian audiences at a time that supports our shoulder season,” he says. ◊

The fast half

Champion NZ triathlete Braden Currie won the Queenstown Half Marathon last year, with an astonishing time of 01:11 for the 21.1km race. This year, he’s setting his sights on the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

“I love trail running and I’m a huge fan of the Queenstown Half Marathon – it’s in my own backyard and the course is beautiful,” he says.

Braden’s top tips to run your fastest half:

Have your race-day nutrition and hydration sorted (test it before the day!). 1 2 3 4 5

Train on similar terrain to the course (road, trail, uphill, downhill).

Spend time on your legs, whether it’s hiking, running or run/walking. Follow a training plan and be consistent, with adequate recovery time.

Do a bit of a speed work in the last few months.

Ensure you have good nutrition and hydration in the lead up to the event.

Optimism in the Eastern Bays

Demand from downsizers and Kiwi expats - and the area’s continued desirabilityinforms an optimistic outlook for Auckland's Eastern Bays.

Greg Dennerly, born and raised in Auckland, has a deep appreciation for the city’s unique character and lifestyle. As Managing Director of New Zealand Sotheby's International Realty in the Eastern Bays, he’s passionate about helping others find their ideal homes in this vibrant region.

Our local property market is experiencing a boost in confidence and optimism among both vendors and buyers. With lower interest rates and the arrival of spring, many are deciding that now is the right time to make their moves. We’re seeing a strong resurgence in buyer activity within the $1.5–3.5 million range, with good attendance at open homes. Higher-end buyers, though, remain selective, often waiting for exceptional value.

Auctions are the preferred method for properties in the mid-to-upper price ranges, and our Eastern Bays office has maintained a 100% success rate with on-site auctions - an edge over competitors who host auctions in auction rooms.

The national median price has continued to rise, currently sitting at $765,000. In Auckland, the average median is higher at $960,000, while the Eastern Bays commands a premium, with an average of $1.62 million. This reflects the area’s desirability and the demand for luxury properties.

Auckland’s property market is diverse, with active participants ranging from first-home buyers to investors. A key segment we serve is mature homeowners looking to downsize into smaller homes or apartments priced

between $3–4 million. There are also sellers who bought properties during the peak of 2020-2021, now grappling with higher mortgage rates and listing their homes to lessen their financial commitments. In suburbs like Mission Bay, a modern three-bedroom townhouse will sell between $1.5–1.6 million.

The time it takes to sell varies by property type. Family homes priced up to $4 million typically sell within 57 days. Investment properties and new builds usually take over 90 days, while lifestyle properties often take even longer.

Many vendors in the Eastern Bays are now ready to downsize after waiting for better market conditions, though a gap between seller and buyer expectations persists. Among buyers, we’re seeing more first-home purchasers with parental financial support, and expats remain a crucial part of our market, consistently expressing interest in returning to New Zealand.

Looking ahead, I see continued optimism for the market over the next six months. We’re expecting increased sales volumes and renewed developer activity in 2025, especially with Government support for development projects. Our new office in St Heliers, with its Display Suite, is well-positioned to support this growth and attract developers looking to showcase their projects.

Where is home for you?

I have lived in Auckland all of my life. Growing up with a boat builder father, weekends were spent on the Waitemata Harbour, exploring the Gulf Islands. I love being on the water with my wife, L-J, and our miniature schnauzer, Frankie, aboard our launch, Baywatch, built by my father 30 years ago.

What’s the best part about living in your region?

The Eastern Bays are close to the CBD but maintain a charming village atmosphere. The walkway linking the bays to the city is ideal for dog walks and catching up with locals. St Heliers, being at the end of the Eastern Bays, is quieter and more peaceful, with friendly and relaxed residents.

What’s your favourite local restaurant or café?

My local favourites are St Heliers Bistro, which does an awesome chicken schnitzel, and The Oak Barrel in Mission Bay, with a great wine selection and delicious pizzas and steak dishes. Both spots have friendly owners and are popular with the locals.

Where's a great place to enjoy the outdoors?

Walking along Tāmaki Drive is a great way to stretch your legs and peoplewatch. Madills Farm in Kohimarama is good place to give the dog a run.

What's your favourite local event?

As a keen tennis player, I love attending the ASB Classic Tennis Series and soaking up the courtside atmosphere. The iconic Round the Bays event is a run along Auckland's stunning waterfront, ending right outside our St Heliers office. ◊
