How Juliette Hogan is successfully navigating a post-pandemic retail world.
There’s no doubt that many New Zealand businesses have been under pressure these past couple of years as we grapple our way through circumstances incurred by the pandemic. But with adversity also comes triumph, and we are excited to share with you – in this issue of Property Style – some Kiwi businesses who are flourishing, despite tumultuous times.
Fashion designer Juliette Hogan is one of them (page 10). The retail sector was hit hard, particularly in Auckland, but Juliette’s determination and business acumen has kept the business firmly on track for success. The same can be said for innovative aviation company Heletranz (page 18).
As we celebrate NZ business in this issue, we can’t help but share our own exciting news: our brand-new flagship real estate exhibition space, the New Zealand Sotheby’s National Exhibition Gallery, is now open in Britomart. Through digital visualisation, this is the place to explore exceptional properties from all around NZ.
If you are ever in the vicinity, please feel free to call in. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this issue of Property Style and our exclusive story with the charismatic Matty McLean on page 6.

presenter Matty McLean opens the doors to his sophisticated central Auckland apartment.
Where do you live?
Central Auckland, right in the beating heart of the city and close to K’ Road and Queen Street. It’s a really vibrant, exciting place to live.
Who do you live with?
I live with my fiancé Ryan – an agent with New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty, incidentally – and our five-year-old miniature schnauzer Otis.
How long have you lived in your home and what initially attracted you to it? We’d been living in West Auckland in our first home, but it wasn’t allowing us the work-life balance we wanted so we started looking closer to the city. We managed to find an apartment in a brand-new build, and just fell in love with it. We’ve been here 18 months and it suits us perfectly – we love the inner-city feel. We’re both so close to our respective offices, plus there are some
incredible eateries within walking distance. It just feels exciting.
What is it about your home that makes you feel at ease?
We really enjoy the social aspect of living in the city, although we’re both still homebodies at heart, especially with the crazy hours of our jobs. I work early mornings and Ryan’s in real estate, so he is out and about constantly. It means when we’re home, we really want to relax. We’ve worked hard to create a space that feels comforting: our open-plan living area means we can easily chat while one of us is cooking dinner or working on the laptop. Plus, we’re fortunate enough to have bright, spacious rooms to sprawl out in – one of the best parts of the apartment is the all-day sun that streams in!
Describe your perfect Sunday at home: We’re very protective of our weekend mornings. They’re a break from my 3.30am alarm, so they involve very lazy lie-ins with a good book, catching up on a TV show in bed or just having a good yarn. But the one thing it always involves is coffee.
What is your favourite room of the house and why?
I absolutely love to cook – it brings me real joy, especially cooking for other people. I feel very lucky to have a gorgeous kitchen in our apartment. It’s so nice to cook in, spacious with beautiful oak cabinetry and a strong, black splashback. I also love how open it is with our living and dining spaces. It means I can chuck on some music, or if Ryan’s home we can catch up about our days while I cook dinner.
If you could change anything about your home, what would it be?
Apartment living has been fantastic for us at this stage in our lives but last summer was so beautiful and warm, and we don’t have an outdoor space. That’s the only real downside. But we make it work – it gets us out and about a lot more and we go for lovely walks with the dog or pop over to the park nearby to catch up with friends.
Tell us about your interior design style: We’re both fans of clean, classic pieces – we’ve collected some beautiful furniture over the years, like our circular dining room table, the solid oak writing desk and the modular couch in our lounge. But we also love to embellish with quirky art pieces from NZ artist Simon Lewis Wards, large indoor plants and extra light features. All these things just elevate the spaces and make them pop. I have to really give a shout out to Ryan –he has a brilliant eye for detail and understands how to utilise a space well.
What is your favourite functional or decorative piece and what is special about it?
We adore Coco Republic in Auckland’s Newmarket, and we found a gorgeous alabaster floor lamp there. It gives off the vibe of an old vintage photography light, with these two spectacularly carved vertical lamp shades. It’s a true statement piece in our living room, and I love the mood lighting it provides at night.
When it comes to homewares and furniture, do you prefer luxury, new pieces or vintage finds?
I certainly wouldn’t call our style ‘vintage’, but I would say we’re good at finding good buys. We’re smart about where we spend our money – most of our furniture and homewares are well priced, but we’re not afraid to splash out on some brilliant hero pieces to bring our home to life. ◇
Juliette Hogan’s distinctive, understated glamour is revolutionising the NZ fashion design industry.
There’s a certain buzz surrounding Kiwi fashion designer Juliette Hogan right now. Fresh from winning multiple business awards and launching two new lines, suffice to say that 2022 is shaping up to be a big and exciting year for both the woman and the brand.
It’s a metaphoric rainbow for a business in an industry that has battled tough times through the pandemic. Bricks-and-mortar retail has undoubtedly taken a hit all over the world yet demand for Juliette Hogan’s cotemporaryyet-classic aesthetic saw the company open their first South Island store in Christchurch in 2021.
“I am extremely proud of this business and how much we have accomplished, especially in recent years with the changes and challenges within our industry and the economy,” says Juliette. “We were delighted to accept the Supreme Excellence Award at the Westpac Business Awards in April, as well as Excellence in Customer Service Delivery and Excellence in Marketing. It’s a huge achievement for us and a testament to the hard work and dedication of my team.”
For a woman who began designing and sewing clothes at age 12, receiving such accolades is a dream come true. While exceptional design and customer service have always been top priorities for Juliette, being recognised for her company’s marketing and business nous is the crescendo.
Juliette began her label in 2004 after returning from New York, where she studied at the Parsons School of Design and completed an internship with Rebecca Taylor. “My interest in fashion really began in my childhood – I used to watch my mother create our clothes,” she recalls. “From there, my passion continued to grow. I arrived home from New York so inspired by the fashion industry and decided to start my own brand, creating small collections in my parents’ garage and travelling to stockists to try to sell them.”
In 2007 she opened her first Juliette Hogan store in Ponsonby and set forth on what has “been an amazing journey ever since.” Today, Juliette Hogan has five retail stores in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and an online store. As well as her staple seasonal collections, Juliette has just launched JH Lounge (luxe basics made from soft, sustainable fibres) and JH Down (warm, chic and 100% recycled outerwear).
“I have to admit, I’m a bit of a selfish designer,” she confesses. “Therefore, most of what I design is very much in line with my personal style and what I need to wear day to day. Refined silhouettes, ease and elegance are at the forefront of my designs – I love to create cohesive collections that can work with JH pieces from past collections, helping our customers create a timeless wardrobe.”
Juliette understands exactly what Kiwi women want, designing garments inspired by various stages of life such as beautiful, confidence-inducing workwear and elegant casual clothes, even garments with pregnancy-friendly features such as elasticated waists, loose dresses and buttondown fronts. It’s this intuitive, big-picture thinking that has captured a loyal following of JH devotees.
“Fashion to me is expression. I want to always feel comfortable and confident in my pieces, and I think fashion can be both an expression of who you want to be for the day, as well as a tool to help you feel confident and comfortable,” she says.
Sophisticated prints – with cues taken from nature, art or travel – are the cornerstones of each Juliette Hogan collection, informing the overall colour palette, textiles and design. Ultimately though, the success of each garment is about how it makes a woman feel.
“Wear what makes you feel confident – there is no right or wrong way to wear and style pieces,” advises Juliette. “And invest in key wardrobe staples; a great black dress, coat and quality knitwear are items that will stay with you for a very long time.” ◇
We’ve discovered the world’s best high-end co ee machines to rev up your winter.
The fine art of espresso preparation is now surging in the domestic sphere. The latest innovative machines – all equal parts form and function – are made for true coffee connoisseurs and committed amateur baristas. Here, we take a look at the world’s most coveted home espresso machines.
Kees van der Westen $16,499
Kees van der Westen is a familyowned company from the Netherlands that originally designed the Speedster as a fun project for family and friends. It’s a professional machine – meaning it’s best installed directly to the water mains – uses a lot of power to heat up quickly, and offers a lot of capacity for a single group machine. Kees’ fondness for classic American cars, older aeroplanes and speed boats is evident in the hyper-precise design. The stainless-steel body panels can be coated with any RAL colour in multiple finishes: smooth, textured, gloss, silk and matte. Options for further customisations are plentiful to fit with any home décor.
La Marzocco $6,649
Based on the iconic design of La Marzocco’s eponymous cafe machine the Linea Classic, the Linea Mini was developed to be a commercialgrade home machine for espresso enthusiasts. Its classic design harkens back to La Marzocco’s heritage from the 1950s. The Mini, a dual boiler with an integrated brew group, is available in red, white, black, stainless steel, light blue, and yellow to work with even the most vivid interiors.
Victoria Arduino $7,130
This revered 116-year-old Italian company developed the Eagle One Prima single group machine to address the changing needs and tastes of a new generation: a midcentury reminiscent design that can be changed on a whim, variable profiles for light and medium roasted beans that can be “dialed in” on either the machine or the app, and a smaller environmental footprint (the engine uses an instant heating system that reduces heat dispersion and energy consumption).
The clever Eagle One Prima can change its colour to suit the season, the workspace, or any colour preferences. Available in stainless steel, black, white, light blue, red, and green.
Decent $6,800
Manument $13,000 (approx.)
When an industrial designer and former barista champion created their first product for the Swiss start-up Manument, they set out to “elevate and celebrate” coffee preparation with a spring-lever espresso machine. Aimed for beginners and professionals alike who enjoy the manual ritual, the handmade Leva Machine may be calibrated for different brewing profiles. An innovative multi-flow heater system heats only the exact amount of water necessary to pull a shot or steam milk, which also prevents overheating and reduces energy consumption.
After spending $10,000 on a high-end espresso machine, Decent founder and co-designer John Buckman says he was still making drinks that were worse than his $100 home machine. But after a day under the tutelage of a professional barista, he started making progress.
“Most of us don’t have the option of an expert Italian standing next to us, giving us advice, and correcting our mistakes,” he says. “So, I set out to make a tablet-controlled espresso machine that could do some of that for you.”
Influenced by the Tesla, the DE1XXL uses technology to tell the home barista, through the tablet located on the machine, what the pressure, flow rate and temperature are in real time. The DE1XXL – which is shipped in a suitcase for easy transport – is available in white or black.
Rocket $6,313
The Rocket R 60V is one of the most popular professional domestic coffee machines in New Zealand. A partnership between Kiwi Andrew Meo and Italian Daniele Berenbruch, Rocket brings together the espresso philosophies from opposite sides of the world and the R 60V makes it easy to increase or decrease pump pressure depending on the coffee type and desired flavours and intensity. The machine’s intuitive communication pod allows adjustments to be made via remote control.
This exceptional property in the Waikato is the pinnacle of rural living.
With more than four hectares of park-like grounds serving as a private playground, this expansive home is undoubtedly one of the Waikato’s finest.
Located in prestigious Tamahere –just 20 minutes’ drive from Hamilton –this exclusive sanctuary brings together the essentials for a comfortable family lifestyle with five bedrooms (plus a three-bedroom separate cottage), six bathrooms and generous garaging for multiple vehicles.
Country grandeur abounds in every square metre of this well-designed property, from the stately fireplaces, exquisite kitchen, and opulent décor to the games room (complete with sports bar and pool table), large sauna, and an internal swimming pool that’s reminiscent of Bali.
Outside, various entertaining areas, a beautifully presented tennis court and a chess set add further unexpected fun to the immaculate, well-established grounds.

Over the past two years, homeowners have had a penchant for selecting easy-onthe-eye, neutral interior colours, opting for calming hues and earthy tones for interest on feature walls – perhaps as a counterbalance to the chaos of a global pandemic. Now, as we slowly emerge from the Covid shadow, paint experts and trend forecasters are predicting a tsunami of colour. Green is still very much ‘in’ as it has been for a few years but this time it’s brighter, bolder and more fun. Deep blues and shades of yellow –ranging from light buttercream to gold – also hit the 2023 colour palette to create feelings of optimism and energy.
Auckland’s Sofia and John Ambler are aiming high in private flying.
When Sofia Ambler met a Kiwi pilot, she suspected that aviation would become a significant part of her life.
What she didn’t count on, however, was that –10 years after marrying her husband John Ambler – she would be leading a successful helicopter company, catering to the likes of Barack Obama, Serena Williams and other (confidential) highprofile visitors to New Zealand.
When the couple purchased Albany-based helicopter operating company Heletranz in 2013, they made the decision for John to continue working out of Hong Kong as a captain for Cathay Pacific to help fund the business expansion. Sofia, meanwhile, set the rotorblades in motion.
“With no previous experience in aviation or of running a business – in combination with being new to NZ from Sweden and having three young children – it was a very steep learning curve,” she recalls. “But it did show me what I was meant to be doing in life, giving up a career in finance to run my own business. For the first time I truly understood what it meant when people say they ‘work all the time but it doesn’t feel like work’. It became a passion.”
In eight years, Sofia and John grew the business from a fleet of two helicopters to 14, developed a $2.5 million VIP hangar and became the first commercial helicopter operator in NZ to provide Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), enabling the machines to fly in darkness and inclement weather.
Sofia’s business acumen and leadership in the aviation industry, together with John’s expertise and vast experience, proved to be the perfect combination for success. So much so that the
couple have recently launched a new private jet charter and ownership business, NZ Jet.
It’s a strategic and timely move for the couple, who have taken a step back from the day-to-day running of Heletranz to focus on NZ Jet and The Luxury Network, a corporate membership club for premium brands.
While commercial aviation through the Covid-19 pandemic has drastically declined, private aviation is on the up, both in NZ and overseas. High-net-worth individuals are experiencing high value in working to their own flight schedules and private jet manufacturers are reporting twice as many orders for jets than what they are currently producing.
Catering to high-profile vistorslike US President Barack Obamais everyday business for Heletranz.
NZ Jet has two Cessna Citation Ultra jets on the fleet, hosting up to eight passengers each. Sofia says there’s a shortage of these mid-size corporate jets in NZ and anticipates the largest part of the business will be flights between Auckland and Queenstown/Wānaka, with some international hauls to Australia and the Pacific Islands. The company is also investigating innovative ways of offsetting its carbon footprint through local projects.
“Our aim is to deliver the same premium, personalised experience that we have been offering our clients at Heletranz to the private jet market,” she says. “I love the personal connection with people through this industry - many of our best clients have become close friends.” ◇
“While commercial aviation through the Covid-19 pandemic has drastically declined, private aviation is on the up.”Sofia Ambler from Heletranz.
With white sandy beaches, a warm climate and a vibrant arts scene, it’s difficult not to fall in love with Nelson. It has become a hub for Kiwis and expats seeking a sea (and lifestyle) change, with weekend outdoor opportunities galore in nearby national parks.
Where’s home for you? Atawhai. My family and I have lived there since 2008, in a home we had designed and built. It’s gorgeous, just three minutes’ drive to city or a seven-minute bike ride to the office.
What’s your favourite local restaurant or café?
That is very difficult to narrow down but, if I have to, my three top spots are Mama Cod (the oysters are sublime), Hopgood’s (exquisite dining) and the Boat Shed Café (the best view in the country, right on the waterfront).
What’s the best location for a scenic walk or run?
For a quick 30-minute walk, along the top of the Botanic Gardens is a hill with the ‘Centre Of NZ’ mark that overlooks the Nelson CBD and out to the Tasman Ranges. As for a run, either the Brook Valley or the Maitai River Walkway provide quiet and peaceful runs, and there is also the NZ Great Cycle Trail which connects Nelson and Richmond right through to Mapua and Motueka, and all the way to Kaiteriteri Beach.
The Nelson Market on a Saturday morning is an absolute delight. The entire region is renowned for its fine art and crafts, and these can all be found at the Market. Central Nelson is also superb for its one-off boutique shops for clothes, art, jewellery (Jens Hansen was the ring maker for the Lord of The Rings movies), homewares and local produce.
At the top of the South Island we have what could be easily be argued as the best wines in NZ. Our personal local favourites are The Ned and Rimu Grove.
It’s been an interesting few months for the overall NZ property market but the Nelson-Tasman region has seemed to escape the majority of the uncertainty that some other parts of the country are experiencing.
The median year-on-year house price in the Nelson-Tasman region is up 11.7% (according to the Real Estate Institute of NZ) and we’re still experiencing keen interest from Kiwis in other parts of the country looking to move to the Nelson region for lifestyle reasons. The same goes for ex-pats arriving from places such as the Middle East and Australia.
the
That’s easy – it’s the simplicity of having the total lifestyle package. The region has everything you could possibly want, without the hustle and bustle of a major city. We consistently have one of the highest sunshine hours in NZ, and with that comes the chance to explore, enjoy, energise, rejuvenate, and reconnect with yourself or one-another. ◇
However, we are finding that properties are taking slightly longer to sell, at an average of an additional nine days. This brings us to an average of 37 days to sell a property – the longest it’s been in 10 years.
It’s a telling stat and shows us that buyers are taking more time to slow down, consider and negotiate. There’s certainly not as much urgency in the market as there was in 2021.
That being said, considerable interest still exists in both land and homes in ‘hot’ areas such as Mapua/Ruby Bay, the Port Hills and the Cathedral area, particularly those at the midto-high end of the market. Other buyers are wanting to get closer to the city centre in lock-up-and-leave townhouses and apartments.
“Comfort and style” best describe the new R.M.Williams Rigger Commando boots, $745. They’re nothing but rugged with loads of attitude – just like the brand.
Fashion editor Louise Hilsz of BeautyEQ handpicks the latest in winter wardrobe updates, from the perfect trench to an energy-inspired accessory.
Streetwear is a force unlike any other; the genius of this relaxed trend is that today it works for the office and real life. On high rotation, Porter James Sports Mohair P Knit, in navy or cream, $230, will become a wardrobe staple because of this brand’s quality fabric and discreet branding.
WORLD pays attention to three significant style factors: fabric, silhouette, and colour. So if you’re dressing up on the job, we are wrapped with the new WORLDMan Sortilège Coat, $699
Not all jewellery stands the test of time, like Zoe & Morgan. These new Prana earrings, $209, are a nod to 1970s style but are designed to wear every day. Their name – Prana from Hinduism – means life force; the movement of this chain is symbolic of our connection with life and a sign of luxury and energy in our eyes.
The trench coat is forever an investment. So as the must-have piece in your wardrobe, it needs to be endlessly versatile (we suggest you splurge, rather than save, on a new trench). Emerging New Zealand designer Caitlin Crisp delivers the In The Loop Trench, $1150, and the on-point-for-the-season Hamlet Dress (in Pink or Blue) $525
The buttery texture of this new Yu Mei Scrunchie Vi Bag, $619, is sublime, and the bag is versatile enough for everyday but sleek enough to show off after five.
1 bone-in short rib
2 brown onions
1 carrot
3 celery stalks
1 leek
15 garlic cloves
15g sliced ginger
3 tbsp brown sugar
1.4L beef stock
300ml red wine
90ml red wine vinegar
8 bay leaves
1 sprig thyme
1 tbsp black peppercorns
5g dried shitake
BLACKBERRY VINEGAR
100g fresh blackberries
100ml apple cider vinegar
1 ½ tbsp sugar
This warming winter dish is one of the menu highlights at Hawke’s Bay’s renowned Mission Restaurant.
Preheat oven to 110°C on fan bake. Line a roasting dish with baking paper and add short rib, bone side up. Roughly cut all vegetables and add to the dish, along with all remaining short rib ingredients. Cover with baking paper, then tin foil, and place in the oven.
Cook for 18-20 hours or until meat is easily pulled off the bone.
To make the vinegar, muddle the vinegar and blackberries, cover and let it steep for at least 24 hours, stirring every few hours. Bring to the boil with sugar, let cool, and then strain. Keep in an airtight bottle until needed.
When the short rib is cooked, carefully remove the remaining bones. Leave to cool in the cooking liquid for at least an hour then strain the liquid into an airtight container. Set meat aside to cool completely.
To reheat, add equal amounts of cooking liquid and blackberry vinegar to a high-sided frying pan over a low heat for 15-20 minutes, turning the short rib every few minutes. Increase the heat to reduce the sauce into a glaze, frequently basting the meat. Season with freshly cracked salt and pepper. Drizzle the short rib with the glaze and top with dukka. Serve on confit garlic cream with a side barley risotto and garnish with fresh blackberries.

This home was originally designed in the 1920s by renowned Arts and Crafts architect Gerald Jones. Architect Noel Lane designed an interior renovation and a cleverly juxtaposed extension. It lays siege to architectural preconceptions. It is part 1900s villa and part cutting edge domicile. It imitates no period and conforms only to the lifestyle of the inhabitants. A sophisticated architect and builder have made sure every detail of construction matters and spotting these touches, is a joy.
Peace and tranquility are words often spoken, but rarely experienced. Nestled within a private, gated community called Cedar Ridge in Titirangi, our owners have made this home on a showpiece blending incredible character, with a modern finish. Multiple family areas over three levels, open-plan kitchen and expansive decking means this home will suit a range of buyers, all vying for the comfort of a wood burning fire and cinema double glazed windows overlooking the surrounding native bush.
