There’s something about art and architecture that has the ability to lift people’s spirits. Whether it’s the detail and grandeur of an historic building on a busy city street, the subtleness of a contemporary home perfectly placed amongst a beautiful landscape or a thought-provoking sculpture in a park, the combination of shape and form has the power to stop us in our tracks.

Auckland architect Paul Clarke knows this all too well and the relationship between art and architecture is evident throughout his work. The unity became even more meaningful when designing his own art-and-joy-inspired home, which he opens up to Property Style on page 6.

We also talk to Los Angeles-based actress Kristin Davis on her favourite home keepsakes collected from around the globe (page 9), and our counterparts at Sotheby’s auction house in New York explain how to curate a personal art collection (page 10).

As for us in NZ, we’re very much looking forward to the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon on Saturday, November 20. This is one of the world’s most spectacular running events and we are delighted to be the title partner of it. Best of luck to all the participants – we’ll see you at the finish line.

Foundations of joy

Designing a contemporary residence for his own family was a gratifying task for renowned architect Paul Clarke.

nzsothebysrealty.com 6

Architect Paul Clarke had a distinct advantage when designing his new Remuera home. Having lived on the site for more than 10 years in an older cedar weatherboard abode, he knew deeply the intricacies of the location.

Of course, having the insights to its inhabitants – his wife and two teenage sons – was also beneficial, which Paul says is key in designing a multi-use replacement home that exudes joy, adapts to the changing needs of a family and has a longevity that outlasts any design trends.

“The house needed to work for us as a couple, our sons, our dog and our friends and extended family, while providing a space that is adaptable,” he says. “The most important aspect to consider when designing any home is to understand how the people like to live, understand the site conditions and – most importantly – try to establish a longevity within the design to allow the building to endure over time.”

“Adaptability” and “connections” are two words that Paul, founder of Aucklandbased architectural firm Studio2, is well acquainted with.

Property Style 7 Architecture & Design

Adaptability sums up his family’s use of the space –from his sons turning the garage into a makeshift gym to the creation of multiple social areas – with the home elegantly connected as a whole.

“When you have these incredible connections – they may be internal or connections to the external environment – it provides a satisfaction and calmness that only good architecture can create,” he says. “It is very powerful that a space can change your emotions, the way we live and the way we see things.”

The extraordinary three-level tower house is another impressive example from Paul’s architecture portfolio, which includes some of New Zealand’s finest homes. Born in the South Island, he is well known for producing architecture which embodies both sensitivity and restraint, while simultaneously delivering the “wow” factor.

His entry into the vocation was spurred by a love of art as well as a gentle persuasion from his father.

“Funnily enough, my father was a chartered accountant, and he couldn’t see any volition to me being an artist.

So I became an architect instead,” he recalls. “I found a different way to express my artistic side and I still get huge satisfaction in permeating art and architecture.”

The work of Paul and his colleagues at Studio2 consists of standout residences in some of Auckland’s most coveted suburbs, as well as holiday homes in locations such as Omaha, Great Barrier Island, Whangamatā, Wānaka and Queenstown. And the work hasn’t slowed, despite the global challenges of Covid-19.

“People are thinking more about their home environment and Covid has had a big impact on that. We are discovering how important home is, and our different interactions within it, whether it’s family, children, Zoom calls or work. People are now more interested in creating spaces that are adaptable, functional and – most importantly – enjoyable.”

Ultimately, it was that unmistakable joyfulness that Paul has strived to express in his own home.

“Recently we had some friends over, and later in the evening they thanked us and said, ‘you have so much warmth here’,” he tells. “That, to me, is the best thing, when people feel warm and welcome and had a wonderful experience in your home. It’s what most of us are aiming to achieve in architecture.” ◇

The City to the world

Kristin Davis is a passionate world traveller. However, the most meaningful journeys of her life haven’t been to movie or TV sets, but to places to make a difference.

Kristin is a Goodwill Ambassador with UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, and has visited Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, meeting families displaced by conflict and violence. The Sex and the City star also travelled to Nairobi, Kenya, to meet with women refugee entrepreneurs.

“If you’re in an extreme-poverty situation, helping women with microloans and training them to earn money is a way to have a lasting effect,” she says. And Kristin has remained engaged. “There are so many conflicts all around the world, so many that we can’t even keep them all in our minds here in America,” she says. “I really wanted to be part of the front lines in terms of trying to help these people who had been forgotten by society at large.”

Admittedly, her own life in LA is a world away, both physically and metaphorically. But her current home (she recently relocated after 20 years in her previous abode) is filled with reminders of her travels. “I like homey and warm,” Davis, 55, says. “If you saw where I am right now, you would laugh out loud because I would not necessarily describe the structure itself as homey and warm.”

She can’t easily put a finger on her new home’s architectural style, so “transitional” is her default adjective. Still, Kristin’s keepsakes make the space inviting and, due to her innate design sense, everything is enviably arranged.

Here are the five favourite pieces helping make her new place feel like home.

1. RUG “I have so many Moroccan rugs, which stems from shooting Sex and the City 2 in Morocco. Sarah [Jessica Parker] and I, on the weekends, would go and rug shop. I didn’t get this particular one there but I like that it has an unusual motif with the flower in the centre.”

2. CHAIR “It went so perfectly with everything I already owned, and it was nice to mix in something a little more futuristic.”

3. LAMP “That lamp was Charlotte’s lamp from the very, very beginning of Sex and the City, when I only had a one-bedroom set as my apartment. As time went, my apartment grew and grew until it was this massive, beautiful, multiroom, Park Avenue apartment set, filled with white flowers. But that pink lamp was always in it somewhere.”

4. ELEPHANT “Artists Gillie and Marc Schattner wanted to do something to help the plight of elephants worldwide and, specifically, to benefit the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust who I work with. They made life-size sculptures of the babies who were at the nursery and placed them, as an art installation, all around London. But they also made small bronze ones that you could purchase. This is Barsilinga, an elephant who features prominently in the documentary I made called Gardeners of Eden.”

Home works

Beginning an art collection may seem like an intimidating endeavour, from choosing an artwork to deciding when to buy. But with many auctions offering works without reserves and starting bids of just $100, it is possible to become a collector on any budget.

Sotheby’s is renowned for connecting art lovers with some of the most iconic works in the world; Monet’s “Meules” ($155.9 million), Picasso’s “Garçon à la Pipe” ($146.8 million), and Banksy’s incredible self-destructing “Girl with a Balloon” ($1.9 million), to name a few. Although these significant sales are at the top-end of the global art scale, beautiful art is achievable in any home. New York based Sotheby’s art specialist Elizabeth Pisano shares her tips for featuring fine art in your everyday spaces.

Elizabeth Pisano, Vice President & Senior Specialist of the American Art department at Sotheby’s. sothebys.com/en/articles/ specialist-tips-for-new-collectors

The rule of three. When it comes to guidelines for successful collecting, Elizabeth suggests balancing your instincts with your budget and space restrictions. Instincts: “If you can’t stop thinking about a work, that’s usually a sign you should own it,” she says. “The collections I have seen appreciate most in value are the ones built by people who paid far less attention to trends and changing tastes and instead focused on things they truly loved and reacted to instinctively.”

Budget: “You will love something more if there is no financial guilt associated with it,” she says.

Space: “Ensure you have the appropriate space to feature your artworks.”

Delve into detail. The simplest way to learn more about an artwork or an artist is to ask questions.

“Get in touch directly with the auction house or gallery offering a work. Ask for additional images and a condition report, or speak to a specialist about it in more detail,” says Elizabeth. Do your research. A solid grasp of history cannot be replaced.

“Research is a collector’s best friend no matter how seasoned he or she is,” Elizabeth attests. “The internet is an incredible tool for learning about particular artists as well as reviewing past auction records.”

Follow your passion. “I really believe the primary reason for collecting works of art should be passion,” she says. “You really can’t go wrong if you pursue things you genuinely love and want to live with.”

Fine art is an investment as well as an heirloom –here’s a guide to curating your collection.

Claude Monet’s “Meules”, the most glorious and effusive work from the artist’s famed Haystacks series, sold at a 2019 Sotheby’s auction for an astonishing $155.9 million. The winning bid shattered the previous record for the highest sum ever paid for a work by Monet.

“Garçon à la Pipe” by Pablo Picasso. Painted in 1905 when Picasso was 24 years old it sold at a Sotheby’s auction in 2004 for $146.8 million.

NZ art at Aratoi

The New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Wairarapa Art Review 2021 officially opens on Friday, December 10 at Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History in Masterton.

The inspiring biennial art awards and exhibition runs for two months and showcases an exclusive selection of fine local art, all of which is available for purchase.

NZSIR Greytown sales associate Brady Bingham says the event offers a unique opportunity to acquire extraordinary and award-winning local works. “The Wairarapa Art Review is a fantastic event,” he says. “Aratoi is a very highly regarded history and art museum and we are proud to sponsor this exhibition and support our local community.” ◇

This architectural home in Lake Hayes is the epitome of modernity.

Designing a home that’s as contemporary as it is timeless is no easy feat, however this award-winning home manages to bring the best of both worlds.

Nestled in a prime position between beautiful Arrowtown and the pristine Lake Hayes, this four-bedroom house was a winner in the New Zealand Institute of Architecture Awards for its captivating exterior and functional, multi-use design.

Indoor-outdoor flow is central to the home, with generous north-facing decks which lead to more than 9,000 square metres of easy-care grounds. Meanwhile, the interior is luxurious and unexpected, from the sunken living area – which frames incredible alpine views – to the elegant chef’s kitchen and the spacious, natural-light-filled bedrooms.

This is a property that provides peace, privacy and easy access to some of the world’s most scenic trails, all being just a 20-minute drive from the hustle and bustle of Queenstown.

The great outdoors

With New Zealand’s temperate climate, an outdoor living oasis is just as crucial to a functional home as the interior.

A space to gather with friends over an afternoon cocktail or a family barbecue, an alfresco dining area is an investment that will attract year-round use.

But there are a few aspects to consider when designing an alfresco dining zone: the impact of the elements, the view from your dining table, and your lifestyle. Perhaps you need your outdoor living space close to the kitchen? Or maybe far away from the kids’ bedrooms is best? Ensure the location is right and the rest will flow.

Changing the game

It’s been a whirlwind year for young Auckland entrepreneur Jaimee Lupton. Her MONDAY Haircare brand has developed a cult following, is stocked all around the world and has acquired famous fans such as Kris Jenner and Georgia Fowler.

The rapid expansion of the brand has been nothing short of remarkable. Since launching early 2020, MONDAY Haircare products – deemed salon-quality at an affordable price point – are now sold via 8500 mainstream retail stockists, from NZ and Australian supermarkets to a $40 million deal with Target in the US.

Jaimee puts the company’s success down to a combination of nurturing big ideas, pushing boundaries, a commitment to sustainability and a desire to make luxury a little more inclusive.

“All these really exciting beauty brands were coming onto the scene and proving that quality didn’t necessarily have to cost more,” she says. “Brands like The Ordinary and Glossier that were democratising skincare. But there still wasn’t anything like that in the haircare space, so I set out to create it! I quickly realised that markups across the board were extortionate and felt really inspired to deliver on values like being vegan and cruelty-free, free of SLS and parabens, and in recyclable bottles but at an affordable price point.”

Having sold six million bottles worldwide to date, the combo has clearly worked for Jaimee and MONDAY co-founder (and real-life partner) Nick Mowbray. As a co-founder of global consumer goods giant ZURU, Nick’s business acumen has undoubtedly influenced the progression of the brand, while Jaimee’s entrepreneurial and management skills have led her to be named as Under-30 Achiever of the Year at the 2021 Mumbrella Awards.

“Keeping up team morale is also key,” insists Jaimee. “Luckily, we’ve built a team of incredibly clever, energetic people, and the team dynamic is really supportive and respectful. I’m quite a loyal person and I think this carries across to my approach in hiring and retaining staff for MONDAY. As a leader it’s important for me to nurture people’s talent and what

they want from their careers. I expect my team to be quite nimble, flexible and open to new ways of working, so I aim to show them the same flexibility in return when it comes to life outside of work.”

Establishing a new brand – particularly during a global pandemic – hasn’t been without its challenges, however, and Jaimee says MONDAY has been impacted by the international shipping crisis, rising costs, and the uncertainty of inventory levels (for example, when the brand first forayed into NZ supermarkets, they sold six months’ worth of stock in just four weeks).

Doing business from their home base in Auckland has been a chance for the power couple to reset and focus on the future of MONDAY Haircare.

“Nick and I would usually be travelling between Auckland and ZURU’s headquarters in Hong Kong, plus meeting with buyers in new and upcoming markets in the US and Europe, so having this extra time at home has been lovely,” she says. “We’ve been grateful that NZ has been able to enjoy a relatively safe and healthy past year. We’ve also been grateful for the support people have shown MONDAY from the outset. NZ can get left behind when it comes to international beauty brands but there are lots of exciting homegrown brands filling that gap. We’re just glad to be one of them!” ◇

There’s a reason why more than a quarter of New Zealand’s population choose to live in Auckland. A diverse landscape of white sandy beaches, black sandy beaches, 48 volcanic cones and native forest encircle a sophisticated and cosmopolitan CBD with a vibrancy that rivals some of the greatest cities in the world.

In fact, Auckland took out the top spot in the 2021 Global Liveability Index by The Economist Intelligence Unit, followed by Osaka and Adelaide.

New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty executive assistant Abby Maire is a life-long Aucklander and shares her favourite things about Tāmaki Makaurau.

What’s your favourite restaurant for a night out?

This is a hard one, how to pick just one? I think I would choose Azabu – I adore their food, especially the tuna sashimi tostada and the spicy tuna sushi roll. The kids bento boxes are fantastic as well. Their new Mission Bay restaurant is a great beach location and even better in the summer months.

And the best spots for brunch with friends?

Ampersand Eatery in Orakei Bay Village is a great coffee and brunch spot with amazing views, service and food.

The best location for a scenic walk or run? Definitely around Tāmaki Drive along the waterfront. We are so lucky to have this right on our doorstep, and there are some great cafés for a coffee stop along the way too.

Where are the most beautiful picnic locations? Takapuna and Milford are both beautiful beaches for picnics and having fun with the kids.

Where do you go for an afternoon with the family?

Now that my kids are a bit older our afternoons have changed. We might go and wander around the Viaduct for a game of mini golf at Holey Moley followed by a glass of wine for Mum and Dad.

What are Auckland’s unmissable annual events?

If you have children, a Christmas trip to see Santa at Smith & Caughey’s on Queen Street is a must-do. What are your favourite shopping destinations and why?

I love Newmarket because it is close to where I live and work and has everything I need at Westfield, as well as great little areas and laneways for shopping like Teed Street and Kent Street. There are lots of funky retail stores and cafés for a different shopping experience.

Do you have any go-to local wines?

The Camille Rosé 2020 from The Sculptureum in Matakana is a summer fave. Their red wine is lovely too. The vineyard is an hour’s drive north of Auckland and it’s worth the trip to visit the incredible sculptures, art and gardens too.

What’s the best part about living in Auckland? We are lucky to be able to drive or ferry 45 minutes (if traffic allows!) and be at Piha Beach or on Waiheke Island, or heading south towards the countryside. Auckland is also handy to the Coromandel and Northland for weekend getaways outside of the city, and we enjoy an incredible restaurant scene. We are also very fortunate to live on a beautiful harbour and host amazing events such as the America’s Cup. ◇

Running down a dream

Elite marathon runner and Nike run coach Lydia O’Donnell shares her advice for achieving a

PB.

As one of Aotearoa’s most anticipated running events – the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon – draws near, participants around the country are ramping up their training programmes.

Distance and endurance are often the goals for this fun run which traverses through some stunning scenes, but so is speed. These all-important factors have long been the driving force for Tauranga-born elite marathon runner Lydia O’Donnell, 31, who has spent many years running – and winning – numerous events around the world.

Although Covid-19 has put a halt on long-haul travel, Lydia’s training programme is stronger than ever, and she recently ran a half marathon in the concrete confines of a MIQ carpark in Auckland after returning to NZ from Melbourne.

“Running is the medicine for my mind and provides me a space to find myself,” she says. “It gives me purpose when I am lost, allows me to connect to like-minded people and create a sense of muchneeded community. I use running as my form of meditation and through meditation we are able to

work through who we are and who we want to be.

“The physical benefits of running are secondary to how my mind thrives from the sport. I continually focus on how I feel in myself and my mind, and my body tends to be in tune with that.”

One of her most memorable runs was the 2018 New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon, in which she was the second female to cross the finish line at two hours, 56 minutes.

“It was such a great course and an incredible event,” she recalls. “I loved the scenery as even when you are in the depths of the race you can look around and smile from the beautiful environment.”

For those competing in this year’s event on Saturday, November 20, Lydia shares her hot tips for reaching your personal best on race day.

Train and condition

Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a beginner, the final 12-16 weeks before an event are the most crucial for your training.

“From 12 weeks out it’s important to focus on more distance-specific training, ie, full or half marathon,” she says. “But the more time you

Running for beginners

Most people can reap the numerous rewards of running; improved mental health, cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and better bone density, to name a few.

Kickstart your running programme by spending four to six weeks walk-running, then gradually increase your time running and decrease your walking time. Aiming to run between lamp posts will help with the motivation levels!

“If you can slowly increase the running load your body will become more conditioned to the impact of running,” says Lydia. “Take it slow – the more patient you can be with yourself, the more likely you will be able to continue running without getting injured. Get professional advice if you have never run before and be sure to focus on rest just as much as running to give yourself time to recover between sessions.”

have to train, the more conditioned your body will be to prevent injury and improve fitness and speed.”

Go the distance

“Your endurance will naturally improve as you run more,” says Lydia. “The key is to increase your distance gradually. Increase your long run each week by a small amount. If you increase too quickly you are putting your body at risk of injury, so be patient with building up to the distance you would like to be at prior to race day.”

Pick up the pace

Introduce speed sessions to your training programme to get ahead of the pack. Lydia suggests incorporating one or two speed-specific workouts and really pushing how fast you can move. Strength training will also have a positive impact on your race time.

“Key exercises such as squats, deadlifts and lunges can help you increase your lower body strength which in turn will increase your running power and speed,” she says.

Nurture your nutrition

Food can be used as a performance enhancer so, if you want the gains, pay attention to what you’re eating.

“Focus on a balanced load of carbs and protein and stick to what you know,” advises Lydia. “If you are running the half or full, load up slightly more than normal but try not to binge on food as your body may respond in a negative way.”

Strategise

“The goal of every race – no matter the distance – should be to negative split the race, ie, run the first half slower than the second half,” says Lydia. “It can be hard to not get carried away with the hype and adrenaline of a race but in the longer-distance races I constantly talk to myself and repeat the words ‘calm and consistent’ throughout until I am at least 75% of the way through. This is when you should be ready to push and finish the race strong.”

Race-day ready

Fuelling and hydrating your body correctly is key in long-distance running but it’s important to try out any pick-me-up foods, liquids or gels prior to the big event so you can figure out what works best for your body in order for you to perform your best.

“As a general rule, aim to take on an energy gel every 30 minutes or every six-to-eight kilometres throughout the race and be sure to drink water alongside your gels to help process the energy.” ◇

Pip Cheshire calls the Skhy Precinct an example of urban acupuncture. This is the insertion of a carefully thought out mixed use development which has an effect on a larger area, in this case adding a significant presence to the regeneration of this interesting Uptown area of the city. The SKHY precinct consists of four separate buildings. The main building is a repurposed midcentury tower that was completed and occupied in 2018 and is a landmark in this fascinating Uptown area of Auckland.
