A Message From Mayor Kevin Murdoch

Autumn often reminds me of school restarting, which means a return to learning, seeing friends again, sports, and cozy evenings. Oak Bay Parks, Recreation and Culture in the Fall provides a similar opportunity to “return” to healthy habits, old friends, and learning.

There are many learning opportunities available, whether taking up a new interest, improving established skills, or sharing your knowledge with others. There are opportunities to learn new languages, a variety of arts and crafts programs, writing workshops, courses on the use of technology, fitness and wellness programs including meditation, tai chi and dance classes, and other activities which include the whole family. These programs all engage your learning pathways while facilitating the chance to meet friends new and old.

All the favourite health and fitness activities are back and continuously improved. These include swimming and aquafit, skating, yoga, circuit training, and more… but for those looking for a little more sweat, high intensity fitness classes are back in full force including indoor cycling and Zumba classes.

Whatever activity you choose for yourself, I encourage you to try something new this fall. Our mental health is as important as our physical health, and both are helped by participating in a range of activities and by taking time to explore our natural spaces. I hope that, even if you’re busy returning to work or school, you take time out to hike through our natural parks, walk, bike, or kayak along the waterfront, and wander our many village centers with their cafes and shops. There are many opportunities to recharge by soaking in the natural beauty, wildlife, architecture, and public art.

I look forward to seeing you at Oak Bay, Henderson, and Monterey Recreation Centres this fall, and to catching up when I see you while walking or biking around our beautiful community.

Meghan, welcome! Tell us a little about yourself!

I am a born and raised Victoria girl, with deep roots in Oak Bay. I spent this past summer hiking, camping, swimming in the lakes, and learning how to sail. I am a huge “foodie” and I love to cook and try out new recipes, but I also enjoy eating at all the amazing local restaurants in Victoria – especially the dogfriendly ones, as I take my dog everywhere with me.

I understand you have worked for Oak Bay Parks, Recreation, and Culture for a while. What other departments have you worked in?

I started working for Oak Bay back in October of 2005, almost 18 years ago, at the Sports View Bar & Grill as a server. From

Staff Spotlight

there I worked in numerous auxiliary positions, mostly in the Community Recreation department. In October of 2018 I was awarded the position of Licensed Care Programmer. I absolutely loved that job as I was able to work with all the wonderful children and families in the Oak Bay community, supporting them, and watching them grow. However, after four and a bit years in that role, I was ready for a change. I have been the Programmer of Events and Volunteers here at Monterey Centre since January 2023.

Why did you want to work at Monterey Recreation Centre?

Monterey Recreation Centre has always held a special place in my heart. My Nana was an avid member and a dedicated volunteer here for

many years, and because of that I spent a large portion of my childhood here. She was a member of the Note-ables, a Fern Café volunteer, a volunteer receptionist, a special events server, and was very active in other clubs and programs. This Centre was a second home for my Nana, and because of that I have a deep understanding of just how special the community within Monterey is to so many, and I am very excited to be a part of that.

What does the Events and Volunteers Programmer do?

The Events and Volunteers Programmer plans and organizes all of the day trips that the Monterey members go on, as well as all of the events held at Monterey. From the special lunches to the large-scale dinner and dances,

“Great leadership is about human experiences, not processes. Leadership is not a formula or a program. It is a human activity that comes from the heart and considers the heart of others.”
—LANCE SECRETAN
Meghan Page – Programmer (Volunteers & Events)
14 Register oakbayrec.perfectmind.com Contents

and everything in between. Also, I supervise and manage all the amazing volunteers who dedicate their time to making Monterey Centre the welcoming space that it is for all who visit. We have volunteers in many different areas of Monterey, and it is wonderful and inspiring to see all of these amazing volunteers in action. Some of our volunteers have been here for 30+ years!! All in all, this position requires me to wear many hats (sometimes literally!!). There is a lot of communication, creativity, and problem-solving involved, and there is never a dull moment, but it sure is a lot of fun.

What do you enjoy most about working at Monterey?

The people. Hands down, the people are what makes Monterey so special. For the most part, people come here because they want to have fun and connect with their community, and my job is to create spaces and opportunities to foster those connections. I love watching new friendships flourish as people connect over shared interests or laugh as they learn a new skill together. I also love the staff team I get to work with, everyone here is so kind, considerate, supportive, and appreciates a good laugh.

Anything else you would like the Monterey Members to know about you?

My door is always open, so please stop by and introduce yourselves! I am passionate about recreation and the community and am always researching the latest trends in recreation and leisure programming. However, you are the ones partaking in the events and trips! So, if you have an idea for an event or a trip you would love to see, please don’t hesitate to suggest it. Also - if you just want to stop by and show me a picture of your dog, I would love that too.

Fern Cafe and Coffee Express

Monterey Recreation Centre offers a variety of dishes to choose from daily at the Fern Cafe. Entreés range from $6-$15 dollars, and include cold and hot meals, muffins, cookies and beverages.

Specials are made mid-week and are always delicious. Check out the new breakfast sandwich offered at the Coffee Express! Sit and drink a coffee or tea and treat yourself to a brownie or muffin after picking up a book from the Library. There are always volunteer opportunities in both areas, ask Meghan Page, our volunteer coordinator, or Reception for more information. We’d love to have you join the team!

The Monterey Recreation Activity Association (MRAA)

Since March 2017, I’ve had the privilege of being President of a versatile and energetic organization called the Monterey Recreation Activity Association (MRAA). This Association, a registered charity based at the Monterey Centre, oversees twenty-seven clubs, serves 1,500 members and maintains a close working relationship with the dedicated staff at the Monterey Recreation Centre and Oak Bay Parks, Recreation & Culture.

MRAA’s goal is to offer our members services that will benefit and enhance their lives as they enter their later years. Medical research states that the keys to better aging are social activity, intellectual stimulation, physical fitness and artistic expression. Providing our members with the opportunities to be active and pursue their interests, whether art, music, fitness or education, will help our members stay healthy, happy and lessen their dependence on community health services.

We support clubs offering diverse interests from woodworking to chess, from billiards to singing. There are fitness clubs, continuing education, social activity, performance and creative art clubs. MRAA is always looking to encourage new clubs and actively support the current ones. If you have an idea for a

new club please contact any Board member. You can reach us by leaving a message at the Centre’s Reception desk. The Board wants to hear your ideas.

But clubs are just one aspect of MRAA. Volunteers are vital to the success of MRAA and the Centre. We encourage volunteering throughout the Centre and we work with the Monterey staff to see how our members can provide their skills and experience to enrich the Monterey experience for everyone.

Our Association funds entertainment, special events, day trips, guest speaker programs, and many other social occasions for the members to enjoy. Our aim is to make the Monterey Recreation Centre a community hub of learning, creativity, good health and social engagement. A community where you can continue to thrive

Monterey Recreation Centre

So Much to Offer!

To many people, September means a return to the routine. It symbolizes the end of summer fun and leisure and going back to work and deadlines. For many people September is the harbinger of cooler temperatures, shorter days and rain, rain, rain. But can I share a secret with you? I love September! I look forward to its arrival because it means we are getting closer to autumn – my favourite season. I know many people look at the end of summer with unease. They equate September and the approaching cooler weather with having to stay indoors more. But if we must be indoors, why not be indoors at the Monterey Recreation Centre?

You can sit in front of our fireplace in the lobby and quietly read a book while enjoying some fresh coffee from the Coffee Express. Or if the fireplace is just a bit too warm for you, try the Garden Court. It’s a bright and relaxing spot where you can people watch or chat with a friend. It’s also a great spot to look over Monterey’s latest Guide.

The current guide offers so many courses, both old favourites and some new ones. Think of September as the start of school – a time to learn a new sport or a second language. How about trying one of MRAA’s clubs? There are twenty-seven to choose from. Not ready to join a course or a club? That’s okay. The Centre still has a lot to offer. There are discussion groups, guest speakers, special evening events, day trips, lunch specials, some with entertainment, and so much more.

Take some time to visit the Monterey Recreation Centre and ask for a tour. Or stop by our welcoming Fern Café, which offers the best brownies, muffins, and soups in town. Enjoy a hot lunch or a snack at our cafe and have a chat with some of our members. You won’t regret it.

See you at the Centre!

MEET THE BOARD OF MRAA

Gail Hughes President

I joined the Centre in 2011.

I have been on the MRAA Board since 2014. My favourite Monterey activity is having a tea in the Fern Café or the Garden Court and talking to my fellow Monterey members.

My favourite Monterey memory is the unveiling of the Dorita Grant Wall Hangings. The three art pieces are currently located in the Lobby. To me, they represent so much that is positive about this Centre and the members’ Association. The wall hangings symbolize the amazing talent and generosity of our members. The art works were presented to the Centre by the artist who was a long-time member. They show not only her talent and skill as an artist but also how much the Monterey Centre and the community of Oak Bay meant to her. I’m proud that I had a part in restoring and preserving them. Now everyone will be able to see and appreciate these beautiful works of art.

Judy McMullen Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair

I’ve been a member of the Centre for 15 years.

I have been on the Board for two years.

My favourite Monterey activity is interacting with the members and staff. I find their company and their lives, both past and present, very engaging.

My favourite Monterey memory is participating in the Family History Club. One guest speaker arrived in Chainmail Armour and Medieval Armour, including the full helmet. It was obviously remarkable! He was a real crowd pleaser.

I’ve been a member of the Centre since 2001.

I have been on the MRAA Board since 2018. My favourite Monterey activity is table tennis. My favourite Monterey memory is dressing up as pirates on Halloween evening at Monterey in 2010 with family, friends, good food and entertainment.

Wally Lazaruk and Mindfulness

Wally, what can you tell us about yourself?

I grew up in rural Alberta near the village of Andrew about 100 kilometers northeast of Edmonton. After graduating from high school, I moved to Edmonton and attended the University of Alberta where I completed a Bachelor of Education degree.

In my career as an educator, I worked as a teacher, an education consultant and a senior manager at the Alberta Department of Education. After retiring from Alberta Education, I served as President and Principal Consultant of Evaluation Plus Inc., an education consulting company specializing in program evaluation, needs assessments, strategic planning and second language education.

To help me in my profession, I completed a Master of Arts degree from McGill University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Oregon. I received provincial, national and international awards for my work, including the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques (Knight in the Order of the Academic Palms) from France’s Ministry of National Education.

My wife and I moved to Victoria from Edmonton, Alberta in September 2015 to enjoy some retirement years in a warmer climate near the ocean.

Can you tell us about your experience with meditation and mindfulness?

About 30 years ago, I became interested in meditation and mindfulness as a way to reduce work and personal stress and to develop my inner strengths of compassion and resilience.

I received professional training in the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR) and worked as an intern at the Center for Mindfulness, University of California, San Diego. I also completed post-graduate training in executive and life coaching at the College of Executive Coaching to become a Certified Professional Coach. Over the last four years or so, I have been studying Dr. Rick Hanson’s work on cultivating well-being. Well-being can be defined simply as feeling good and functioning effectively in life. The foundations of well-being include selfcompassion, mindfulness, resilience, gratitude, motivation, calm, confidence and courage. Cultivating these inner strengths help participants to better cope with life’s challenges, have more fulfilling relationships, and feel less stressed, worried, and depressed.

I commend the Monterey Recreation Centre for offering sessions in cultivating well-being to help participants explore, learn and practice the foundations of well-being. I am pleased to facilitate these sessions.

It is easy to be prepared for any emergency. Just follow the emergency preparedness mantra - know the risks, have a plan, have a kit, and know your neighbours.

Know the risks. In Oak Bay, what are the emergencies you should be prepared for? Weather, loss of utilities, fire, and earthquake. Remember an emergency or disaster can include an unexpected trip to the hospital or a traffic jam on the Malahat.

Have a plan. Make two plans. Develop one that covers staying in your home or as we say shelter-in-place, if it is safe to do so, and the second will involve leaving or evacuating from where you are if it is not safe to stay put. The important components of these plans are:

• Determining at least two escape routes and a kit safe enough to carry for a distance.

• Personalize your kits so you can ensure they contain what you need.

• Making sure you include everyone in your plan. Do not forget your pets.

• Making lists of the resources you will need. If you are sheltering in place, you should think in terms of 7 days. If you are evacuating, think 24 hours. Once you have the plans, remember to share the plans, keep them up-to-date and practice them.

Build your kits. There are two kits everyone should have. Their names describe their use.

Shelter-in-place (7 days) - Essentials include, water, food, a way to stay informed and to communicate, medications, important documents, money (small denominations), sturdy shoes and warm clothes. Include extra supplies for your pets.

Grab & Go (24 hours) - The list is the same, the quantities will vary. Remember to keep this kit light enough to carry

for a distance. Wheels help but will not work on stairs or rough terrain. Pets should each have thier own Grab & Go bag.

Personalize your kits so you can ensure they contain what you need.

Important Tips:

• The never-be-without items: water, medications and supplies to support your special health needs.

• Include extra adapters, battery packs and other supporting equipment that will keep your current phones and tablets operational in all your kits.

• Where do you keep your kits? Where they will be readily accessible. Think about the possible risks, check out your surroundings and then pick the best meeting place.

• Read and understand your insurance policies. Call your agent if you have questions.

• Stay informed. Things change and it is important not to be left behind.

Know your neighbours! Get to know your neighbours so you can rely on them, and they can rely on you in an emergency.

Now you are prepared. It is that easy.

For more information on Emergency Preparedness and the C-MIST framework contact the Oak Bay Emergency Program, 250-592-9121 or obep@oakbay.ca or drop in for a visit. The office is located at the Oak Bay Fire Hall, 1703 Monterey Avenue and is open Monday through Friday.

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner. The routines of Wu style share very similar sequences of moves and names to Yang style Tai Chi. In Wu style, the stances are taller and the steps are shorter. This style of Tai Chi is well-suited for beginners and people with physical difficulties such as low stances or physical disabilities which make it difficult to perform a wider range of motions.

STRETCH, STRENGTH & CONDITION

OSTEOFIT

50 YRS+

Osteofit is a specially designed exercise and education program for those with osteoporosis and low bone mass and for those at risk of falling. The course includes strength, balance, posture, and stretching exercises that are essential for creating an effective Fall Prevention strategy. Bands and light weights are examples of some of the equipment used to improve strength. Classes have an educational component and are designed for adults who can participate without the use of an aid or walker. Please bring your own resistance band.

MOVE STRONG: RESTORING STRENGTH

19 YRS+

This is not your typical style of strength and stretch class. It is designed to ‘up-regulate’ the muscles that are less used and ‘down-regulate’ the ones that are overactive. It was once believed that fitness classes should require activating more muscles, but studies show it has become more relevant to learn how to let muscles release their constant tension and act like muscles should: turn on when needed and turn off when not. Floor work is part of this class.
