MONTEREY RECREATION CENTRE
A Message From Mayor Kevin Murdoch 50 is a significant milestone. With Monterey Centre celebrating its 50 th year we can take a moment to be thankful for what I affectionately call Oak Bay’s “community rumpus room” which provides so much to so many. Specifically, I would like to thank Oak Bay Parks, Recreation and Culture staff for their cheerful service, for the Monterey Recreation Activity Association volunteers who work so hard to innovate and provide the services and activities we enjoy, and of course, the many volunteers who help make this a home away from home. For 50 years Monterey has been a hub for lifelong learning, volunteer service, social connections, friendships, and physical activity. The pandemic has highlighted the benefits of these connections and activities – and I hope you feel the joy I feel these days seeing friends after a long pause, having a safe place to see them, and having activities to step back into. So, whether you are returning to an old friend or joining Monterey for the first time, be sure to wish the Centre a happy birthday; after all, now that Monterey Center is 50 it can finally be a member itself.

Oak Bay Volunteer Services with Renee Lorme-Gulbrandsen- Executive Director By Lesley Cobus
I know Oak Bay Volunteers has been a valued part of the Oak Bay Community for a long time. How many years has it been operating? Oak Bay Volunteers started in 1977 and has been operating for 44 years. In the mid-1970s the municipality did a needs survey of Oak Bay residents. The respondents communicated the need for various supports in the community and as a result Oak Bay Volunteers was created. Who do you serve in the community? Our mandate is to serve anyone in need in Oak Bay. Due to the high senior’s demographic in the community, we serve mainly seniors. We also provide services to people living with mental and physical disabilities. In the future I would like to provide opportunities for services and programs that support youth and young families.
6
Back to Contents Page
What are your most popular services? Drives to medical appointments, banking and recreational programs are popular services. Social and wellness check phone calls have replaced in-person visits during the pandemic. Walks in the community are also popular, along with outside visits for those less mobile. We also have a grocery shopping and delivery service for residents that are unable to get out and do their own shopping. Light gardening, personalized income tax service for low-income residents, and snow removal are also popular services.
Monterey Recreation Centre is excited to have Oak Bay Volunteers on site. How are you enjoying your new location? The move to Monterey has opened opportunities for community engagement and cooperation. It makes sense for Oak Bay Volunteers and Monterey Centre to be at the same location as we both serve seniors. Our new location is very accessible for people with wheelchairs, walkers and scooters. Staff and Volunteers have more space to meet and collaborate. We love our new office furnishings. We invite Oak Bay residents to drop in and say hello.
What kind of volunteer roles do you have available?
What is the best way for Oak Bay residents to get in touch with Oak Bay Volunteers?
We have positions available for drivers, shoppers, phone callers, walking companions, visitors, light gardening, and our snow angelssnow removal team.
The best way to get in touch with us is to call 250-595-1034. Our office is open Monday-Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm. We close for lunch from 12:00 to 1:00pm.

Welcome Chef Paul A moment in time with Chef Paul DeRidder By Lesley Cobus We are so excited to have you on our Food Services Team at Monterey! I know you recently moved from Comox to Victoria. How are you enjoying Victoria so far? I like it. I really do. Lots of things to do. I enjoy living so close to the water. I enjoy the diversity and culture, there is so much to do.

In Vernon, B.C. where I grew up, I lived next to a family that owned a Mexican Restaurant. I started washing dishes at 15 years old and I quickly moved to becoming a line cook. I wanted to play rep hockey, and with divorced parents I had to work to pay the hockey expenses. In high school I would even work on my lunch breaks and after school.
9:00am-1:00pm
What do you like best about cooking? I like the pace! I like to be creative and work with fresh, quality ingredients. I enjoy the balance of team and individual work. What do you enjoy best about cooking at Monterey Receation Centre? I like being able to create new menus every week. I like to make people smile. I enjoy the team, and the family-like environment.

A History of Monterey with Ronanne McConnachie Interview by Lesley Cobus
I know you have a long history with Monterey. What year did you start working at the Centre? I was hired as the Programmer of Volunteers and Special Events in 1985. I became the Centre Coordinator in 1988 and worked at Monterey for 10 years until 1999, when I moved to the Coordinator position at Henderson Recreation Centre. What was happening at Monterey back in 1985? There was approximately 2,500 Members and 250 plus Volunteers at the Oak Bay Seniors Activity Centre as it was called then. The Centre was a second home to many members. The volunteers were very hands-on in running the Centre. For example, volunteers had keys to the Centre and would run the Centre on weekends and holidays. In food services, they would help prepare and serve afternoon teas and sometimes food for special evening events. In the 1980s Monterey food services only had a part-time Cook and part-time Baker. Special events would sell out at 200 people. Members enthusiastically participated in Bridge, group fitness, special events, clubs, and overnight trips. Monterey had the use of a character house next to the centre, which is now part of the library, that was called “the Annex”. We held yoga classes there because it was nice and quiet, and backyard barbeques were also popular there. Popular clubs included the photo club, where people would go on trips and share their photos on slide shows, sing-along with Dorothy and Cherry, Woodcrafters and Billiards. Craft Carnival was a large club. They ran both the Bazaar and Rummage Sale. We didn’t have computers in the 80’s. Registration Day was held in the Garry Oak Room. Members would line up and take a number to register in programs. Registrations were written out manually on old blue triplicate forms. Class lists were all handwritten. Sell-out programs included Bridge Lessons with Peggy Wright, Yoga, Tai Chi, Art classes by Glen Matthews and John Nip. Back to Contents Page
The overnight trips sound interesting. What types of trips were offered? Group trips were very popular with the Members in the 1980s. Members loved doing things together in groups and leaving all the planning to the Trip Programmer. We partnered with a local travel agent and planned trips to Europe, China, Mexico, Hawaii, cruises to Alaska, bus trips to Leavenworth, and trips to the Rocky Mountains. Popular day trips included Expo 86, musicals/plays in Vancouver, as well as local destinations, which always included lunch! What was the highlight of your career with Recreation Oak Bay? My years working at Monterey were the highlight of my career. I was involved in the expansion of the Centre in the late 1980s and thoroughly enjoyed the friendly community, and family-like feeling. Members were very engaged and dedicated to fundraising for Centre improvements. The engraved wooden brick wall across from Reception started as a fundraiser for the expansion project. What was your favourite thing about working at Monterey? The people! The staff, the members, and the volunteers. Together we all worked hard but also had fun.

Volunteers Really Are the Heart of Monterey A conversation with Joanne Donohue, Volunteer Programmer
What role do volunteers play at Monterey? It’s been said many times: “The Monterey Centre would not exist without its volunteers.” The truth is that it would exist, many recreation centres do function without volunteers. But it would not be the Monterey Centre we know and love. It would not have the family of Monterey Centre Volunteers showing up each day serving the patrons, clearing the tables, sharing a laugh with one another, or the staff. It would just be another recreation centre. Who is on the Volunteer Team? The heart of Monterey is comprised of many volunteers. They are a diverse group of men and women from different backgrounds and from different parts of the world. They work together, sharing their skills, their time, and their commitment to Monterey. We know we are fortunate to have them here and we like to show them how much we appreciate them. How do you show appreciation to the Volunteers? Every year the Centre hosts two Volunteer Appreciation events. In May we come together for an evening featuring wine and cheese, where volunteer service milestones are recognized. In the late fall all of the volunteers are celebrated at a Volunteer Appreciation luncheon. All of the volunteers are invited to each of these events. In August, annual workshops are held to review the volunteers’ training and update them on any Centre changes. What is involved in the Volunteer Application Process? All volunteer applicants are screened. We provide an orientation for each volunteer, so they understand what the job entails. We also partner them with a team member currently filling the position so they can see firsthand what is involved. What is MRAA’s involvement with Volunteers? In 2018, a Volunteer Committee formed to further develop the volunteer experience at Monterey. The committee has evolved to oversee training and mentoring and ensure that volunteering at the Monterey Centre is a positive and rewarding experience. MRAA is responsible for screening and training their Committee and Club Rep Volunteers. 10

Be Prepared for Winter Interview with Eileen Grant Manager, Oak Bay Emergency Program By Lesley Cobus
What is the emergency preparedness mantra of Oak Bay Emergency regardless of the emergency? Know the risks, have a plan, build your kits, and know your neighbours. Now is the time to check your emergency plan for what you need to get ready for ensuring you have a safe and warm winter. What do you need to know about winter preparedness? Let’s start with snow and ice. Have a snow removal plan. Make sure you have a good snow shovel and a supply of de-ice in hand before the cold weather arrives. If you don’t want to do the shoveling, talk to your gardener and teenage neighbours about being on call to clear your sidewalks and pathways when it snows. It is hard to find someone when the snow starts falling. How can you prepare in advance for power outages? Check your battery flashlights are working, have battery operated lights at the ready. Please don’t use candles due to the fire hazard. Have a supply of blankets ready to use. Sleeping bags are a great way to keep warm. Have a supply of food on hand that you don’t have to cook. Don’t forget a supply of water. Stock up on bottled water and food in advance of cold and icy weather. By planning in advance you won’t have to brave the icy roads and walkways and the crowds that forgot to get prepared. What steps can you take to have a safe winter? Looking after our health in the winter can be a challenge. Arrange to get your flu shot. Have a supply of medications in your home so you don’t have to venture out in bad weather. Check if your pharmacy delivers —many do. Back to Contents Page
Slipping and falling on icy days is common. Check the treads on your boots/shoes to make sure you can walk safely outdoors. Service your car and have your winter tires put on before the freezing temperatures hit. Always keep your fuel level above half full. You never know when you’ll have to use your car for transportation or shelter or for how long. Make sure all your appliances are in good working order. Fall is the perfect time to make those check-up appointments. Portable heaters are a popular way to add warmth to our homes. Make sure all heaters are CSA approved. Never leave them running unattended or while you sleep. Always follow manufacturer’s recommendations for distance to combustibles. Know where your water and utility shut offs are in case you must turn them off. Read your home insurance policy before you are in an emergency. Make sure you understand what is included and what isn’t. You may want to update it. Some policies include hotel coverage if you are required to leave your home due to an emergency and some policies don’t. Always make sure you have an up-to-date Grab & Go kit ready to grab and go. Communication is always vital but can be lifesaving during a winter emergency. What can you do to ensure you can call for help? Keep your cell phone, laptop or iPad charged up. Have a portable battery for your cell phone just in case. Continued on next page

Introduce yourself to your neighbours and share your plans with them. Ask for help if you need it. Always offer to reciprocate. Research shows that it is our neighbours who are our lifelines when there is an emergency. Make a list of trusted websites and helpful telephone numbers for services that can answer questions you may have about utility outages and problems, health-related questions or community services. Climate change is here! The secret to being safer during any emergency is to prepare in advance. What kind of items should we have in a Grab and Go kit? • Medications, copies of prescriptions • Copies of important documents, identification and contact information • Recent pictures of yourself, family and pets • Extra keys for your house and car • Cash–coins and small bills • Chargers and adapters for phones and other electronics you have included in your bag • Supplies for equipment to meet your functional needs • Pens and paper • Sturdy shoes • One litre of water • High-energy snacks • Flashlight and batteries • Battery or wind-up radio • Spare eyeglasses • Small first aid kit • Emergency blanket • Warm clothing (sweater, socks...) • Scarf or dust mask • Whistle • Orange garbage bag • HELP/OK sign Store your Grab & Go Bags near an exit or someplace where you can grab them and get out. A Unique Partnership The Monterey Recreation Activity Association is fortunate to have a home at the Monterey Recreation Centre. Our Club Members pay the annual Monterey Membership fees and in turn receive classroom spaces to meet. Clubs have a minimum requirement of maintaining 10 active club participants to be eligible for room space. All Monterey Members are eligible to participate in numerous activities, courses, and events at discounted prices. These benefits are possible because the Association and the Centre staff have a strong and mutually beneficial working relationship.

Both organizations share similar goals and values. However, we do have different responsibilities. First off, the Monterey Recreation Centre (MRC) is one of five recreation centres operated and managed by Oak Bay Parks, Recreation & Culture Department. The MRC operates as a business. Although Monterey is partially subsidized by Oak Bay taxpayers, the staff work very hard to generate revenue to lessen the tax burden. All MRC staff are employed and paid by the District of Oak Bay. They create and oversee the adult course programs, drop-in activities, special events and day trips. Staff are responsible for the daily maintenance and upkeep of the building. The MRC Volunteer Programmer oversees the Centre volunteers and manages all associated record keeping. MRC’s purpose is to provide lifelong learning and recreational opportunities for adults of all ages, as well as special services for adults aged 50 and older. Monterey Recreation Activity Association (MRAA) is a registered non-profit charity managed by volunteers. We fundraise to enhance our members’ experiences at Monterey. MRAA does not own any physical assets, although we have donated furnishings to the Centre. We do not employ any paid staff. MRAA’s purpose is to provide learning and recreational activities for MRC members who are aged 50 years and over. Together MRC and MRAA each achieve their objectives by working in collaboration under the terms set out by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
14
Back to Contents Page
Both the MRC and MRAA provide services to adults aged 50 and over. Both depend on a core of volunteers, and both abide by a Code of Behaviour (posted throughout the Centre). MRC and MRAA work together by open communication and abiding by the terms outlined in the MOU and the Code of Behaviour. The main goal of both organizations is to maintain a warm, welcoming, and safe environment for all members. We achieve this by: • Collaborating on joint committees that consider MRC improvement projects, special events, and other initiatives. • Providing a range of learning and recreational opportunities for MRAA members. • Distributing available resources to optimize benefits for MRAA members. • Ensuring MRC members are well informed about MRAA activities through a variety of channels. • Promoting and mentoring volunteerism at the Centre. As we go forward, MRAA and the MRC will build on its current relationship and continue to offer all Centre patrons an environment where its members can continue to expand their current interests, explore new ones and be active participants in the community. Gail Hughes, President, MRAA
Investing in Our Members As a registered non-profit society, the Monterey Recreation Activity Association (MRAA) can accept donations and issue tax receipts for those donations. We have also been the recipient of legacies left to us by former members. Every dollar we receive goes straight to the Association for the benefit of our members. No funds are set aside for salary or office costs. The Association is 100 percent volunteer run and supported. The Association’s mandate is to use its donations to support and promote our membership. We do this in many ways. For our low-income members, we subsidize their membership fees so that they can participate and be a part of the Monterey family. This subsidy has proven to be a great return on investment, as many of these same members contribute their time and skills to support the Association and the Centre as volunteers. Even during the months of COVID when the Centre had to follow provincial health guidelines and reduce its services, MRAA was still able to find ways to support its members. Board Directors became Fern Café Ambassadors. We greeted café patrons, taking names and contact numbers for COVID track-and-trace procedures. This role allowed us to stay in contact with MRAA members and to share important information about the Centre. It was during this period that the need for a food subsidy for some members became clear. The frozen food program, aimed at our subsidized members, started in the early months of COVID and ended in September 2021. It helped ensure that some of our most vulnerable members, who were unable to access a grocery store or who lived alone, received healthy meals. Funding memberships and the food program are just two examples of our commitment to our members. MRAA oversees thirty clubs and one of its primary goals is to ensure, their continued success and growth. We support the clubs by helping with member recruitment, administration and funding. Over the years the association has bought cymbals for Concert Band, dictionaries for Scrabble, dart boards for the Dart Club, a belt/sander for Woodcrafters, mahjong sets Back to Contents Page
for the Mahjong Club and a DVD player for the Classical Music Club. Each club, from Billiards to Woodcrafters, is entitled to aid from MRAA to promote and support the club and the club’s members. MRAA wants each club to flourish, and we are always willing to support the development of new clubs under the MRAA umbrella. Beyond the clubs, we have provided more opportunities for our members to participate in the special events and outings hosted by the Centre. Over the years, the expenses involved in hosting these occasions forced ticket prices to increase. Over time, many of our members had to reduce their participation or not take part at all. To encourage more membership involvement, the Board decided to subsidize the cost of the members’ registration for both the special events and the day trips. The result of taking these measures has been a noticeable increase in member participation for both the special events and the day trips. The mandate of the Monterey Recreation Activity Association is to promote and support members as they pursue educational and recreational opportunities that are geared to their interests and goals. We keep what has worked in the past, yet we are open to new ideas and challenges. We are always looking forward! MRAA Board of Directors Monterey 250-370-7300

Thriving Together at Monterey Sandy Cotton MRAA Board VP Years ago when I was teaching creativity tips and techniques to university students and managers, I discovered that by the age of 40, most adults only have about 5 percent of the creative capacity they exhibited at the age of 5. It seems that the burdens of life, work and even schooling have systematically damaged the right side of our brains. To stay creative, we need to work intentionally to regain our childlike enthusiasm and energy for life in all its facets. This means stretching our minds and our bodies to avoid what I call hardening of the categories. It means actively seeking new experiences, new tastes, and new challenges rather than lamenting the loss of the familiar and the comfortable. It means joining others who are on the same quest – people who laugh a lot, read a lot and connect with others as they go through the transitions that later life offers. It’s well established that anxiety, negativity and general grumpiness can be contagious, but so are enthusiasm, joy and a general zest for life. In my experience, the Monterey Centre is a gathering place for people who share those positive attributes.

It’s a place where enthusiasms for learning new things, rediscovering old enthusiasms, and sharing our blessings with like-minded people are contagious. It’s a place to forge new friendships, and at times, to be sustained by compassionate new friends during our challenging times. Above all, it’s a place where we stand a good chance of avoiding the transition to becoming grumpy old seniors. From my vantage, that makes it a wonderful asset to have in our community. I am proud to be actively involved in helping MRAA work closely with MRC staff to offer clubs and programs that offer members pathways to “Fun, Friendship and Learning”. Please take time to read about them and, best of all, come and see for youself that this is truly a gathering place for people with a zest for life.

Donations Appreciated Financial donations from the community ensure that MRAA can continue supporting seniors by providing membership bursaries and discounted pricing on special events and outings. Your donation makes a difference in the lives of low-income seniors in the community by providing affordable participation opportunities. MRAA gratefully accepts financial donations and provides tax receipts. 100% of donated funds benefit seniors. MRAA is a unique volunteer based not for profit. There are no paid staff or Board Members.
MRAA Fundraising Many of our members look forward to the annual events such as Robbie Burns Night, the Thanksgiving Luncheon, or the Members’ Christmas Dinner. They also look forward to the two fundraisers held each year, the October Bazaar and the February Rummage Sale. These two sales are the primary income earners for our Association. They are also the most chaotic, intense and fun-filled days on the MRAA calendar. And they are the most crucial, because the amount we earn on those two days decides how we can support our members. Every dollar earned from these sales is used for the benefit of our members, both directly and indirectly. For example, MRAA has a tradition of reaching out to volunteers in times of stress or celebration. Whether a volunteer is undergoing medical treatment or reaching a milestone birthday, MRAA will reach out with flowers and a card of support, all funded by money earned at the annual sales. Since these sales are staffed by MRAA members, it’s only fitting that some of the funds are used directly for them. The money raised is used to subsidize dinners and outings for MRAA members, and a yearly appreciation lunch for Club Reps and Committee members. Complimentary refreshments for volunteers when they are working their shift and a annual subsidy to the Fern Café kitchen to offset the rising cost of groceries also comes from the funds to help keep the menu prices at a reasonable level. Some of the money raised from past sales has been used to update the furnishings and equipment at the Centre. The Monterey Centre has been the MRAA’s home since the Association’s inception on January 17, 1980 (as the Oak Bay Seniors Activity Association). Since that time, the Back to Contents Page
Association has believed that any improvement to the Centre has an impact on our members. After all, it is our home! Recent purchases for the Centre have included a smart TV for the lobby, a projector system for the Garry Oak Room, glassware for the Fern Café, a food processor for the kitchen, card tables for the classrooms, folding chairs, a Nespresso machine for Coffee Express and the installation of a fireplace for the lobby. These purchases help our members by ensuring that the Centre will continue to provide services to them in a pleasant, warm, and welcoming environment. While MRAA works hard to better the memberships at the Centre, we also know that we are part of a larger community. Many of us have retired from the work force, but we are still active participants in the community as voters, taxpayers and stakeholders. We care about what happens in our neighbourhood, in our city and in our province. In the last few years, MRAA has participated in community events such as the Oak Bay Tea Party and the Canada Day celebrations at Oak Bay City Hall. We have also donated to the Mayor’s Legacy Fund, and for several years have been a participating sponsor at the Young Exceptional Stars Gala. We do this because we know that to live in a supportive community, you must actively support that community. As the Centre slowly reopens, MRAA will continue to support the Monterey Centre, our clubs, the community and our members. We welcome you to visit us and learn more about what we do. We are always open to making new friends.

Spotlight on Monterey Recreation Centre Members Linda Foubister interviewed members about their participation with the Monterey Recreation Activity Association (MRAA) at the Monterey Recreation Centre. The members discuss the opportunities that the Centre has provided for them to pursue their passion for dance, music, and art, as well as for meeting new friends and giving back to the community by volunteering.
John Tiffany John Tiffany joined Monterey Recreation Activity Association at the Monterey Recreation Centre in 2013. Would you tell me something about your life? I was born and raised in the Hudson River Valley in New York State. I lived in New York City for over 20 years where I worked as a chemical technician. After receiving a graduate degree in Environmental Science, I started a consulting business in 1990 that specialized in indoor air quality. What first brought you to the Monterey Recreation Centre? When my wife and I moved here in 2012, we looked at many recreation centres and determined that the Monterey Recreation Centre was the place for us. We moved to Oak Bay several years ago and we now are only a three-minute walk to the Centre, a great benefit of living in Oak Bay. To what clubs do you belong? I serve as the representative for the Classical Music Club. This involves not just listening to music but also choosing live recordings. As one of three presenters, I pick out the best, most interesting, recording to present and give a background on the piece, the composer and the music. We then watch the recording on a large television screen, coupled with a good audio-visual system. For me, it heightens my appreciation of a piece I don’t know that well. The Club meets monthly at the Centre. My grandmother was an opera singer. She studied at the Sorbonne in Paris in the late 1890s, then performed with the Philadelphia Opera Company. One day, my grandfather went to the opera where he saw my grandmother’s ankles and became entranced. I grew up listening to classical music. My favourite piece is Sibelius’s Symphony #5. I am the treasurer for the Garden Club. The club meets once monthly. We may have speakers or visit gardens within the Victoria region, such as the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific. Also, I facilitate the discussion group on current events. The group was set up four years ago. As the facilitator, I help pick the topics with input from members. The group operates bi-weekly on a drop-in basis. We do have people with different viewpoints but we don’t throw gravel at each other. What are your other volunteer activities? Since 2015, I have volunteered at the Coffee Express. Originally, I volunteered to pay back the Centre as a duty, but now I really enjoy the personal interactions. Over the years, I have gotten to know who likes what and who prefers what kind of cake. I have also enjoyed getting to know the people at the Reception desk. Any other activities? The Centre holds theme-related dinners and entertainment, and my wife and I enjoy these events very much, especially getting to know the other people at the tables. What would surprise people to know about you? At age 16, I hitchhiked across the United States for the summer. One day, I was picked up by a group of mountaineers and we all climbed the challenging Grand Teton in Wyoming together. It took two days to climb the 14,000-foot (4200 metre) mountain, and I did it in Hush Puppies shoes, all that I had with me.

Pat Chung Pat Chung has been an active member of the Monterey Recreation Activity Association at the Monterey Recreation Centre since 1996.
Would you tell me something about your life? I was born in Saskatchewan. As my father was a bank manager, we moved around a lot in my younger years. We settled in Victoria, where I was a student at Oak Bay High School. I trained as a nurse at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, and later worked in Prince George at a time when the city was booming. In Edmonton, I worked at the Aberheart Memorial Sanatorium, caring for children under 5 years old who had tuberculosis. Back in Victoria, I was the bookkeeper and controller at Gibson’s Ladies Wear. What first brought you to the Monterey Recreation Centre? I was recruited from a fitness class at Henderson Recreation Centre by the class teacher, Marie Bradshaw. Marie and Ian Gilbert wanted to create a club at the MRC that would stage performances. Marie asked if I had a dance background; when I replied that I had, she asked if I would do choreography for the club. A sufficient number of members were interested in the club, and so the Monterey NOTE Ables began. Our first show, A Musical Revue, was held in the spring of 1997, and included notable songs such as “Garbage Day in Old Oak Bay.” Club members worked hard at weekly rehearsals to produce two hour shows with up to 40 numbers. People who had never created or directed shows had the opportunity to do so. Members sewed wonderful costumes as they critiqued our performances in rehearsals. The costumes for the song “Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” for example, gave a strong visual on stage with the performers wearing colourful clown wigs and polka dot dresses and vests. I’m hoping to have a sale of the NOTE Able costumes in the future. Some shows had up to thirty cast members, so many costumes will be available. The last large show was held in 2016. Called The NOTEAbles Spring Revue, it included performances by the NOTE Ables, as well as the Monterey Players Drama Club and Hula Dance for Health dancers. During the 20 years

that the club operated, we raised a total of $60,000 after expenses for the MRAA. Some funds were spent for equipment, such as stage curtains, lighting and sound equipment for the MRC. Recently, the Monterey Cabaret replaced the NOTE-Ables in providing opportunities for members to perform in musical productions. What are your other volunteer activities? In 1990, I was again at a Henderson fitness class when I was asked to volunteer at the blood pressure clinic at the centre. As a retired Registered Nurse, I found this to be a good fit. The blood pressure clinics are held for members on Thursdays at the Centre. In 2017, I was asked to coordinate the spring rummage sales and the fall bazaars. It’s a big job, requiring over 100 volunteers. Every year, donations to the sales increase. It is exciting to figure out what some of the things that come in actually are. As volunteers, we see everything that comes into the sale, and that’s fun. The sales provide a combined $22,000 a year revenue for the programs and support offered by the MRAA. I also enjoy being a member of the Craft Carnival Club where crafters get together to knit, sew and do their favourite crafts to sell in the display cabinet at the Centre. Another interest that started for me at the MRC is the Hula for Health class where I enjoy fitness combined with dance. What do you like about being a member? The MRC has something for everybody with its clubs and programs. Prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is nice, and the centre is a friendly place to be.
Gloria Cox Gloria Cox joined the MRAA in 1995. She belongs to several clubs and has volunteered in numerous roles.
Would you tell me something about your life? I was born in England; my husband and I emigrated to Canada, sailing on the maiden voyage of the Empress of Britain in 1956. After 16 years in Toronto, we moved to Victoria, where my husband, Howard, took charge of the prosthetic and orthotic unit at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. I worked at the Legislature as a legislative assistant and have many happy memories of working there. After we retired, we travelled, took cruises, did square dancing, and participated in the many activities at the Monterey Recreation Centre. What first brought you to the Monterey Recreation Centre? A friend recommended the centre. The NOTE-Ables club was asking for volunteers that year and as I have always liked dancing, I joined. I was the club secretary and performed in the shows. The producers and directors wanted everything to be perfect. It was hard work, but it was worth it. We were like a family and we had fun. The audience members agreed that the shows were wonderful. I have performed with the Monterey Cabaret as well. What are your volunteer activities? As a former Board member of the MRAA, I served as the director of social clubs liaising with the six social clubs: Agemates, Chess, Poker, Merry Widows, Scrabble and MahJong, reporting any issues to the Board. I gained insight into Board operations which, are mostly done by volunteers. The MRAA supports fundraising, and provides subsidies for many of the Centre’s
Back to Contents Page
functions. The Board minutes are posted at the Centre so members can see what is happening and how finances are handled. Two years ago, I volunteered in Food Services where I worked in the kitchen, washing dishes and helping the chef. At special events, I helped set up tables and served dinners. For the annual Rummage and Bazaar sales, I sorted items and welcomed guests. To what clubs do you belong? When the Family History Club started about 20 years ago, I sat on the steering committee and then served as the secretary. We learned to use computers at the Computer Club where Joyce Bevan would give lessons with handouts, which I still have. I joined the Merry Widows Club that Joyce Bevan started a few years ago. We are a support group and get together once a month. I have modelled in the club’s spring and fall fashion shows. Without the Centre, I would have been lost when my husband died. What would surprise people to know about you? I’ve never put gas in my car—I always go to full serve gas stations or get my kids to do it! What do you like about volunteering? I meet a lot of people at the Centre, and some become friends. As someone who has always been communityminded, I like to give back. What you give, you receive back ten-fold. The Centre is so friendly, and is the envy of visitors from other places.
