L FEST O O C F O T R A E H T R O F GUIDE
VOL 21 | MAY 2016
FREE
Back in 2014 the Huffington Post described the first Art of Cool Fest as ““the bestkept-secret, jewel box of a music festival happening this year.” Since then, it’s only gotten better, if also better known. This year’s lineup is a virtual who’s who of cutting edge artists of Black American Music. L.A.-based Saxophonist Kamasi Washington has been hailed as “the savior of jazz” for his work with rapper Kendrick Lamar and the waves of young new fans he’s brought into the jazz fold. Likewise the Internet, another young L.A. group, has crossed hip-hop and jazz elements into a sultry, LGBT-friendly blend that’s in hot demand at festivals from Fuji Rock in Japan to Reading in the UK. In a more traditional if no less current vein, two of New Orleans’ premiere trumpeters grace the Bull City on Friday, May 6. Terence Blanchard and Nicholas are titans of the trumpet, who nonetheless push boundaries--Blanchard with his electronic E-Collective and with his politics. In short, Art of Cool Fest is rapidly becoming an annual, national destination event for devotees of Black American Music. In 2015 over 4,000 people attended the Fest, a third of them from out of state. They spent over $1.1 million in downtown Durham over three days. And those numbers will likely grow by half in 2016. This is great for downtown Durham businesses—hotels, restaurants, bars, retailers, etc.
2
It only makes sense that Art of Cool Fest is happening in Durham. While the Mississippi Delta and Chicago are more widely known homes to the blues, Durham in the 1920s and ‘30s was home to a dance-oriented, ragtime-influenced country blues known as Piedmont Blues. Popularized by Reverend Gary Davis, Blind Boy Fuller, Elizabeth Cotton and others, the Piedmont Blues were woven into the social fabric of a tobacco town that paid good wages and liked to party when the day was done. Today, Durham is 40 % black, 40% white, 15% Hispanic and 5% other. That diversity is a hallmark of the Art of Cool Fest and the audience it draws together—an audience that otherwise tends to be segregated in separate cultural silos around town. This is the unique cultural role that Art of Cool Fest has to play in the future of Durham. As people and capital flock to the Bull City from all over the country and downtown development surges, there’s a real concern that our town may lose the very thing that has made it so distinctive and attractive: Our diversity. Art of Cool Fest highlights and celebrates that diversity to an increasingly national audience. What better way to preserve and promote that special sauce that Durham has in such abundance? Austin, Texas has a motto: Keep Austin Weird. Our motto at Art of Cool Fest is: Keep Durham Funky. - Farnum Brown

ART OF COOL FESTIVAL
THE CONDUCTOR OF COOL
CICELY MITCHELL WORDS: JEREMIAH BERKHEIMER | PHOTOS: JILLIAN CLARK
Cicely Mitchell is probably the last person you’d expect to run a music festival: a biostatician by trade and education, she doesn’t play or read music herself; that’s not her thing. For her, music isn’t just about the craft; it’s about the community. That’s why she started Art of Cool, and it’s why she’s pushed it further each year in hopes of bringing in a wider audience, including folks who wouldn’t usually think of jazz as their thing, either.
“YOU CAN DO IT ALL.”
Mitchell co-founded AOC with Al Strong, a local jazz musician and teacher, after first helping him connect with the music community through social media. It was then that she and Strong saw a need to push the boundaries of jazz locally, especially in Durham,
a place she hopes can become as musically cultural as a city like New Orleans. She says the aim of AOC has always been to expand what people think of when they think of jazz and show a wider audience there’s more to it than elevator tunes or the music that played on their parents’ record player. To that end, she’s adopted a quality over quantity approach to AOC’s lineup, choosing to feature just a handful of great bands that each push the limits of traditional jazz and provide a gateway for folks to experience all of what the music and its culture has to offer. It’s a big undertaking for sure, but for Mitchell it’s all a labor of love. Content in her (also incredibly cool) day job, she set up AOC as a volunteer-run nonprofit, donating her nights and
15
weekends in an effort to give back to the community for which she has so much passion. And as far as whether or not someone who can’t play a note should be capable of leading such a charge for the world of music, Mitchell says that’s a question she’s ever stopped long enough to ask. “You don’t have to choose between what you love to do and what you have to do,” she says. “You can do it all.” And in helping create a place where artists and music lovers can come together to enjoy their culture and grow in their craft, it seems like Mitchell might’ve found her thing after all.

ART
PIECES OF A GEM:
GEMYNII WORDS: ASHLEY COBB
“Don’t be a hard rock when you really are a gem…” is what comes to mind when you think of this month’s cover artist Gemynii. The Bull City native is a selftaught artist, writer, poet and community activist. She, like her astrology symbol the Gemini suggest, is very artistic, creative and expressive, all of which are widely displayed throughout her art. Most of her pieces feature abstract portraits of people of color, and her artistic expression is influenced by the overall Black experience of social issues, body/gender acceptance and music. Gemynii’s work has been showcased all over the place — Pitch Media Gallery, The Market Street Coffeehouse, Durham’s People’s Channel, Duke University Hospital, Golden Belt, Winston Salem State University, The Brooklyn Swirl, Blue Coffee Cafe and Busboys & Poets, just to name a few. Her portrait of the legendary Grace Jones adorned our Oak City Hustle cover back in March 2015. Now she’s back for the
20
second time with this month’s cover of Grammy nominated group, The Internet, who are headlining this year’s Art of Cool Jazz and Alternative Soul Music Festival, here in Durham. Gemynii’s decision to illustrate the R&B soul band was based on the band image of coolness, which is what Art of Cool is all about. Originally from Los Angeles, the group features Odd Future affiliates, Syd tha Kyd and Matt Martians. Even though they made their debut in 2011, it’s their 2015 release of Ego Death, which debuted at the in the top ten of Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop chart, that’s given the group a recognizable name. allgenre Billboard 200. Interested in seeing this dynamic duo? The Internet is performing live Saturday, May 7 at Art of Cool. In fact, Art of Cool, featuring more than 60 talented artists over a three day period, will spotlight great music from Rapsody, 9th Wonder, PJ Morton, Thundercat and photo: Seano

Moonchild just to name a few. And according to Gemynii, festivals like the Art of Cool are needed here in the region. “Black culture is what brings people to Durham; this festival bridges the gap between music and art,” she says. And Gemynii is more than a fan of the festival, she’s also an artist. She has previously participated in its
downtown music events and appeared in the festival’s first commercial. She believes it’s important for Black people to attend this festival because it not only celebrates Black artists, but Art of Cool also supports and gives awareness to another group — non-mainstream artists. Make sure to check out Art of Cool Festival, downtown Durham, May 6-8.

LIFE
NATHANIEL MYERS
THE MALKUTA PROJECT WORDS: HEATHER LEAH | PHOTOS: MAX ZAMPIERI
Growing up, Nathaniel Myers wanted to be an astronaut. But after several overseas volunteer and social justice trips to impoverished communities, he realized something surprising: He wanted to help out on earth. “After seeing certain things overseas, it became hard to focus,” he shares. “I realized I wanted a little more out of life than being a NASA rocket scientist and going into outer space.” Now, Myers started asking the question, “How are you using your gift to make the world a better place?” Now, by creating a multimedia based workforce development program designed to empower teens--particularly from low-income families--he hopes to improve life in his own community. His program, called The Malkuta Project, offers educational and employment opportunities for high school students, by giving hands-on experience in filmmaking, photography, digital storytelling, and music and video content production.
“Essentially,” he says, “I want to help them utilize the arts for social change and self-growth.” “Malkuta has two translations,” he explains, “Empowerment from within, and Kingdom. We all have a creative spark of potential within us. It’s how we create that reality where people don’t have to suffer, don’t have to be homeless, don’t have to feel powerless anymore.” The idea was born during his time volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club. “A lot of the teens were impacted by social factors -- disengaged in school, lack of family support, foster care, food insecurity,” he explains. By bringing his keyboard one day, Myers discovered the teens shared his passion for music. He built a makeshift studio, and they began having daily jam sessions. “I saw what a positive impact the arts had on them,” he says. “These kids were so talented, but didn’t always have access to educational or professional opportunities.”
29
With the Malkuta Project, he hopes to build those opportunities and connections, bringing in college students and industry experts to lead each 8-week program. Leaders from NCCU and Myriad Media, and innovators like Pierce Freelon, have already stepped up as mentors and partners. During each session, the students will actively create a piece of content for a local client. Their first client: The Art of Cool. “We’ve got a group of 10 students from Durham School of the Arts and Hillside New Tech High,” he shares. This pilot group will create street-shaking video content for the renowned art-centric festival -- an impressive addition to any student’s resume.
Other large festivals and non-profits have already signed on, requesting the youthful talent of The Malkuta Project’s students. Each organization will receive innovative content from burgeoning talent, assured their funds are contributing to the Triangle’s future leaders. Teens will shoot music videos, practice audio production, and graphic animation -- key skills for a successful career. “Part of the generated revenue will get pumped back into a scholarship,” he explains, “We’d like to help it be very affordable for low-income kids.” “Helping these teens reach their potential, teaching them how to make an impact -- that’s how we change the world,” he says. “This is how I want to live my life.”

ART
A CONVERSATION WITH
ANDRÉ LEON GRAY WORDS: STACY BLOOM-REXRODE
It seems like a natural pairing that Raleigh based visual artist Andre Leon Gray would be involved with the upcoming Art of Cool Fest. Though this is a festival based on the desire to expand the audience for jazz-influenced music, Gray’s works are deeply rooted in and build upon African American history much like the origination and development of jazz. This is evident in his current exhibition A Nation Under Our Feet at the Durham 21c Hotel. I asked Gray about these associations to history and his involvement with Art of Cool Fest. Your work is drawn from history and has many connections to the past, yet often deals with contemporary social issues. Can you speak a bit about your process as an artist? Current issues will be related to some policy or action that happened not only just yesterday, but even decades or hundreds of years ago. For example, in my
34
work, Masters of the Game, it examines how psychological and spiritual warfare during slavery has morphed into the dumbing down of public education and the proliferation of the prison industrial complex. I’ll watch various news sources and notice that mass media has become the disseminator of what will be remembered and forgotten. If something stands out, I will write it down and save that information to possibly be included for a new project. You’re going to be serving on a panel with The Art of Cool during the festival. What will be the focus of the panel and how do you perceive your role in the discussions. The panel discussion will be about ARTivism, and what it means to each member of the panel. I know that music and visual art can be catalysts for social change, depending on the vision of the messenger. My artwork is akin to Fela photo: Seano
35
36
37
Kuti’s message, “Music is the weapon of the future.” I chose art as my weapon to battle artificial barriers created to impose a global socioeconomic hierarchy on people. It’s commonly known as racism. The Art of Cool supports programs in the musical arts, how does it relate to you as a visual artist and/or how did you become involved with the organization? I have done several art workshops and residencies at local schools and community centers through Artspace, Visual Art Exchange, and the United Arts Council in Raleigh, which have educational outreach programs. I have attended various events by The Art of Cool, mainly in Raleigh, so I was familiar with the organization. I was contacted by Michael English, who was putting together the panel discussion after viewing my artwork at 21c Museum
Hotel in Durham. This is my first time working with the group. What parallels or crossovers do you see between what you do as an artist and The Art of Cool? The Art of Cool, according to their website, says that it “strives to cross artistic, economic and social boundaries to bring together a diverse mix of people, cultures, experiences and creativity.” My artwork is presented mostly in educational institutions or non-profit spaces lead by great visionary people who strive to expose a diverse audience to thought-provoking, mind unraveling images. I am preserving a tradition of creative expression that has been genetically passed down to me. It is my duty to honor my ancestors and keep that tradition alive, just like jazz is American classical music which needs to be preserved as well.

ART OF COOL FESTIVAL
LIFE
COOLIN’ WITH THE COOLIGANS:
MICHAEL ENGLISH WORDS: KIMBERLY M. KNIGHT
It’s that time of year again when the “cool kids” come out to play! That’s right it’s the Art of Cool Festival and each year the level of coolness increases. Infusing music, art, culture, and technology together to engage the Durham community as well as welcome fellow travelers to enjoy. This year there will be a new addition to the Art of Cool and that is the Innovate Your Cool Conference. Still, who are the “Cooligans” that help put this amazing event together? One of them is Michael English, a graduate of North Carolina Central University, a physical therapy assistant turned American Underground ExitEvent’s Sales Associate. His passion for start-ups led him to the Triangle Start-up Weekend at the American Underground which led to his position with ExitEvents. He’s also known as DJ Mic Check! He Djs the Art of Cool residency CAM (Contemporary Art Museum) and corporate events when he’s not in the AU. His company, GoldMinded, focuses on building coworking spaces on Historically Black photos: Seano
Colleges & Universities campuses and he now has his first pilot school that will launch later this year. How are you connected to the Art of Cool Festival? Michael English: “Innovate is a major part of my life. I first learned about Art of Cool last year but I was out of town and I was following the feed on my Twitter. I found out they had an innovation conference and I thought this was a perfect transition for the festival. I was familiar with South by South West and what they were doing. I knew Carnegie Mellon has a huge music and tech festival. Last year I wasn’t able to attend but I followed as much as I could on Twitter. I instantly feel in love with the whole concept and I initially started to stalk the brand. Then I found out about Cicely and Al. I actually met Cicely at a down town Durham luncheon that I was there with the American Underground where they were awarding her for the Art of Cool. I walked over to introduce
43
myself and congratulate her. She was like she had been meaning to hit me up and I was thinking I’m a complete fan of what your doing. We met that weekend and she talked about her plans to build the Innovation Conference under its own brand but still with Art of Cool. My skills in programming and my interest in innovation, music, and culture was a perfect mixture”. What are you looking most forward to at Art of Cool this year? Michael English: The Armory on Friday night and the Art of the Turntables of course. Friday night is going to be huge for me because it’s like the calm before the storm. Then all day Saturday from the beginning of Innovate to the end
44
starting off with Spinokio, a hip hopora performance that I’m super excited about, and then to the end a cypher of the Guinness Book of World Records longest cypher artists. I’m looking forward to seeing all of my ideas and programming comes to life by integrating some local flavor with some national flair together”. What would you like people to leave with after Innovate Your Cool Conference? Michael English: “I hope they leave with a sense of understanding what they just experienced is a true show of love for a culture. The people who put their energy into this weekend long party essentially plan for almost a year and it is truly out of love. Empathy is not the best word for it but I want people to understand the experience was built out of true love for the culture”.

ART OF COOL FESTIVAL
LIFE
COOLIN’ WITH THE COOLIGANS:
JOCELYN HARPER WORDS: KIMBERLY M. KNIGHT
Jocelyn Harper is the powerhouse Treasurer and Board Member of the Art of Cool Festival. She started with the Art of Cool Festival in 2011 after falling in love with Al Strong’s performance. As shows continued she connected with Co-Founder Cicely Mitchell and became a guest services coordinator at Art of Cool events. Now as the Treasurer she’s committed to doing her best each year for the culture of this amazing festival. She is responsible for the finances of the StArt of Cool, Art of Cool Festival, and Art of Cool Project. She makes it happen and that’s why she’s one of the “Cooligans” that stands out! What would you like people to know about the Art of Cool Festival? Jocelyn Harper: “I just want people to know that the Art of Cool Festival is a really great organization that was made out of love for music and wanting
46
to expand the audience. It wanted to introduce people to jazz and have great music in the city to get everybody else excited about it. It was a simple concept but that is what I love about it. It was definitely home grown and grass roots but it’s a really great organization with a lot of great people. Cicely and I have become friends and it’s really like a big family”. What are some Art of Cool experiences that you really enjoyed? Jocelyn Harper: “Oh wow really its so many great moments! But my Top 3 are the first year after our first meet up, the first Art of Cool Festival, and I’ve never been star struck before so I hate to admit this but I met Derrick Hodge is one of my all-time favorites besides Al of course but it was great to be able to talk to them. Those are my Top 3 but just being a part of Art of Cool is amazing because this is legacy building.”
What are you most looking forward to this year? Jocelyn Harper: “I’m looking forward to Terence Blanchard, Anderson Paak, The Internet, of course Derrick Hodge will be there, Art of Turntables, the Jamla showcase of course, Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, and I do have my schedule so it’s going to be full but I’m excited! For people interested in being a part of Art of Cool as volunteers what type of advice do you have for them?
Jocelyn Harper: “It is a lot of work but it is a lot of fun. It’s a great learning experience. People don’t realize the amount of time, energy, and sacrifice that goes with putting on a festival. I can’t tell you the amount of time or energy I’ve done to put it together but it’s very rewarding. You have to be organized, willing to have fun, and be open minded”. What do you like to do in your down time? Jocelyn Harper: “Relax! Sleep. No I like music, going to shows, movies, hanging out with my girlfriends, dating sometimes, I love to travel, and sometimes just being home.
