NEON NATE SHEAFFER WORDS: HEATHER LEAH | PHOTOS: JILLIAN CLARK
If you’ve ever downed a local brew at Crank Arm Brewing Company, picked up an indie record at School Kids Music, or danced in the luminous glow of The Ritz, there’s no chance you’ve missed the wicked neon designs of Nate Sheaffer. He’s crafted entire universes of vividlycolored blown glass and shining gas. “You begin with a design, and transfer it onto heat resistant paper,” Sheaffer explains. “You heat the glass tubing, and bend it directly over the pattern. Then you hook it to a vacuum system, which along with some electric heat, burns out the impurities. Then you cool the tube, put the gas in, and seal the unit off.” While creating a series of intricate glass tubes filled with colored powder and gas may seem like a highly delicate process, Sheaffer has been working his craft since college. However, he hasn’t always
8
had the creative freedom he now enjoys. “After graduating, I opened a neon shop. I thought I was going to make a lot of money making art, but commercial work ended up being the reality,” he says. His company, with 23 employees, created a wealth of effervescent cola and beer signs, exporting internationally as far as the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
“IT DOESN’T HAPPEN JUST BECAUSE YOU WANT IT.”
Sheaffer admits, “I really got away from my art. I became driven by money and forgot that my happiness lied in making beautiful and interesting things.” Flash forward to today, and Sheaffer’s taking part in imaginative and inspiring collaborations with other artists he admires. Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival, a joint artistic effort between himself and Jonathan Davis. “His perspective on glass blowing is so unique,” Sheaffer says of Davis. “It’s refreshing to be involved with someone with such fresh artistic applications to the medium.” Locally, he’s also enjoyed more artistic freedom. “I have very diverse and different clients,” he muses. “The partners at Crank Arm put a lot of trust in me to come up with an interesting take on the theme of bicycles and brewing. I pitched my ideas, and they were really supportive. I was able to deliver lots of different ideas and takes on the theme. They put a tremendous amount of trust in me, and gave me a lot of rope.” He’s also partnered with the flashy
and fantastic Louis St. Lewis in setting The Ritz aglow. The pair of dazzling artists are responsible for the luminous displays that make this major music venue memorable. “This was another instance where the client gave us limited guidance, and were very indulgent.” Sheaffer and Lewis’ art has been so successful, they’ve been invited to design more Ritz venues across the country.” To all the aspiring artists, with their own blazing dreams of setting the world aglow, he encourages, “Persist. The only thing you can do that’s going to guarantee eventual success is that you just keep working at it. It doesn’t happen just because you want it. Desire only wins if effort is behind it.”

ART
THE POWER LIES WITHIN:
JASON CLARY WORDS: JT MOORE
We tell our children they can be whatever they put their minds to. We encourage them to dream big and pursue their passions. Yet the idea of starving artists is universally understood and transcends borders, cultures and generations. It’s never been easy for artists, and as adults they hear a completely contradictory message from what they were told as children. Like many Raleigh artists, Jason Clary, knows this struggle all too well. He has faced numerous challenges that have caused him to question his artistic pursuits, and yet he has somehow managed to stay positive and overcome things when others would have given up. Not originally expecting to face this challenge, Clary packed up and moved to a new city full of hopes for his college experience. But once at N.C. State, Clary found himself unable to get into the College of Design. Eventually, dwindling college funds forced him to leave school. “I had to go through this process of selfdoubt and weighing my own work,” said Clary. “I got really depressed during that
time and didn’t work on any artwork for a couple years.” But the connections and friends he made while in school were crucial to him being able to overcome. “It’s basically like Kooley High and Count Bass D were my school in a lot of ways,“ he explained. Having met Raleigh rapper Rapsody and later Charlie Smarts, Clary’s fun projects for friends would eventually lead him to design album covers for musical acts like Inflowential, Count Bass D and eventually Kooley High’s Eastern Standard Time album and their latest release Heights. Those designs would lead Clary to work for brands and acts across the country, including the brand identity for Flying Pepper Vodka, an exciting new spirit distilled in Pittsboro. “Everything happens for a reason,” Clary admits. “Something that I take as one of my biggest blessings was to be rejected. Because I was looking at things in a different way and had to make my own path to still follow my dream.” Yet, that feeling of rejection and the need
19
20
21
22
to prove himself is still something Clary carries despite his success. “Knowing your self-worth is incredible. Letting go of fear and self-doubt, that’s the big thing,” he explained. “I think that’s what a lot of people struggle with. It’s universal. But getting past that wall, letting go of fear and allowing yourself to be free, and let inspiration flow, can be terrifying. You have moments where you are up and down with it. But I think that’s just the nature of doing creative work.” And despite the hardships he’s faced, Clary’s energy and optimism are contagious. He said, “Tab One used to say ‘Artwork to make your heart work.’
So that became a mantra for me.” Clary is also working to make sure that Raleigh follows that mantra as well and supports up-and-coming artists. “We are in a position with Raleigh growing at the rate that it is, the creative class coming together and the network that’s already here and deciding what do we want to create, what do we want to see for the future,” he adds. As far as his hopes for the future, he said, “It’s about the power within you. Standing in your own power. Being with others and holding them up. Just living together.”

GAME CHANGERS & LAWBREAKERS
BOSS KEY
WORDS: PETER FRADELLA | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO | CONCEPT ART: LAWBREAKERS Unreal Tournament and Gears of War. For years, we have been playing these games, glued to our screens while pounding some Mountain Dew and munching on bags of Cool Ranch Doritos. Nothing could tear you away while in the middle of a four-hour session of capture the flag in Unreal or saving mankind from the Locust Horde in Gears. There have not been too many franchises that captured gamers attention since then — until now. Cliff Bleszinski, the mastermind behind those legendary games is back. Now with his own company Boss Key Productions, he is developing a new game that will no doubt again set the industry on fire and keep you up till the wee hours of the morning. Developing games today is more complex than ever. It’s not just a programmer staring at a screen all day coding. It takes scripts, storylines, actors, orchestras, voice overs; what sounds like a summer blockbuster movie, now goes into making games.
26
Bleszinski describes this process as, “Building a freeway while we are
going nine thousand miles an hour while the car is on fire.” This journey started when he first came up with the idea for the new game Lawbreakers, a first-person shooter that would center around guns, gangs and gravity. Coming up with something new in the gaming world is not easy and making it successful is even more difficult. “Every idea is inherently “I WANT TO dumb. But it’s all in the MAKE THIS execution. In the proper TOWN A VIDEO hands, it can be awesome.” GAME HUB.” says Bleszinski. “Other games look like Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and very Pixar with bright cheery characters. I’m making the Tarantino version. I make shooting games where people blow each other up. That’s who I am.” Character development is another crucial piece of the game. Bleszinski says of the process, “You can make a character that looks cool, but can you describe the character? What is unique about it?” On the importance of ensuring that all players can connect to the characters, he adds, “We made
27
28
29
the cast very diverse. Half the cast is female and not being sexualized. No big chests and butts hanging out. They all have different ethnic backgrounds. We want the players to identify with the characters.” Lawbreakers is set to release this year on PC with a launch to around 500 close friends and family and will grow from there. “I want to make this town a video game hub.” says Bleszinski. Don’t worry, Cliff — we are ready for it. And we’re stocking up on energy drinks and snacks so that we’re ready at any moment to choose between upholding the law or breaking it.

ALAN GILL
SMASH! WORDS & PHOTOS: PETER FRADELLA
Don’t be alarmed when you are doawntown this April and see Deadpool, Wolverine and an 8-foot Groot walking around. That just means the Oak City Comicon is back in town. This super feat is put together by Alan Gill from Ultimate Comics. Held at the Raleigh Convention Center, this year’s show should be bigger and “I WAS better than ever, meeting the expectations of even LIKE HEY, the most dedicated super LET’S DO A fans. To understand Gill’s CONVENTION” journey from comic dealer to convention organizer, you must know his origin story, as it’s filled with yogurt, dumpsters and a dilapidated mall. Gill was slinging yogurt at a store he owned when a spot opened up next door, and he knew exactly what to do — open a comic book shop. With no true retail experience, no money and only his personal comic book collection, he started his headquarters. Even though it featured wall fixtures out of dumpsters
from closing cd stores, the shop was an instant hit. Soon, he was setting up at comic book conventions near and far. So how do you go from vending at conventions to starting your own? “Six years ago, I thought I could do a convention. I was like hey, let’s do a convention two months from now,” Gill says. The only place he could find on such a short notice and afford, was the Morrisville outlet mall. “It was like a scene from a zombie apocalypse movie,” he remembers. The turnout was much better than he ever expected. He adds, “Right after that I wanted to do another one later that year, a two-day one.” Every show got bigger and better and eventually he was able to move them out of the “zombie mall.” One reason for that success was due to a longtime friend of the shop and super talent, Tommy Lee Edwards. Edwards is a nationally recognized artist who
35
36
has worked for Marvel, Lucasfilms and Microsoft to name a few. He is in charge of getting top guests for the panels as well as the meet and greets. High profile guests can make or break a show. “Anyone can throw a convention together in an outlet mall, but the talent I got was way out of my league,” Gill admits. Tommy is known for wanting the guests to actually be creators of something, unlike national shows, that usually get actors. Not saying Gill wouldn’t try to get an actor. He says, “The ultimate actor guest that I want is
Patrick Stewart. Just talking gibberish. A one man show — just reading a script from Mork and Mindy.” That may not happen any time soon, but this year’s show will still, without question, have everything the heart of a die-hard comic book fan could desire. Come dressed as your favorite superhero for chances to win prizes or just show up in your jeans and t-shirt costume. Either way, there’s something for both the hard core comic book fan and the casual reader at the Oak City Comicon.
The Oak City Comicon is on Saturday, April 16 at the Raleigh Convention Center. More info: OakCityComicon.com. Ultimate Comics has two locations. One in Raleigh at 1301 Buck Jones Rd. and one in Durham at 6120-A Farrington Rd. with their website at UltimateComics.com

LIFE
THE WORLD
IS OUR GYM WORDS: BECCA BRADY | PHOTOS: RAIN BENNETT
Everyone knows that going to the gym as an adult can seem impossible. It’s February, and your New Year’s resolution to “get fit” has sadly taken the back burner. The minutia and struggles of dayto-day life are priority now. With discount valentine’s candy in hand, we are now consumed with packing our kid’s lunch, making sure we don’t piss off our boss for being late (again), or perhaps taking some time to ponder our country’s support for a certain presidential candidate. Fear not, readers. There is hope for us — not only for a fit president, but also for our physical fitness. Extreme calisthenics. While the word extreme in front of a workout style can seem daunting to the average American, know this workout is more than an avenue to a godlike physique; it’s an art, a passion,
40
a lifestyle. It may sound foreign, but this craze is not new; it’s been sweeping the nation for almost 20 years. Its roots can be traced back to urban metropolises such as New York, Los Angeles and Miami, but it is branching out to cities everywhere, including our very own Oak City. Native North Carolinian and accomplished filmmaker Rain Bennett fell in love with calisthenics in 2007 and has been actively practicing and promoting it ever since. As an artist and athlete, Bennett has been on a lifelong search for an activity that would marry his passions, and he has found his heart in the art of calisthenics. He discovered calisthenics on what he calls the “rabbit hole of YouTube” and moved to New York to immerse himself in the culture of it. He says that it “borders disciplines that are
41
42
43
all growing … yoga, gymnastics, parkour, cross fit and breakdancing.” Bennett’s love and admiration for the calisthenics’ culture motivated him to create the documentary Raise Up: The World is Our Gym. It chronicles the social and cultural benefits that
street calisthenics has made — and is making — globally. When asked his inspiration behind the film, Bennett simply says, “I’m all heart.” His heart is evident in Raise Up. The film premieres at the Rialto Theatre on Thursday, March 10 at 7 PM.
For more information about the movie check out www.RaiseUpTheMovie.com. The Rialto movie theater is located at 1620 Glenwood Avenue. Check out AmbassadorCinemas.com for information about the theater.

LIFE
KING
OF THE KIRBY WORDS & PHOTOS: SPCLGST
Good luck watching cartoons on Avenue C or catching up on a little sleep while I was in high school. Why? Every Saturday morning from as far back as I can remember, my lovely mother would pull out the loudest, most obnoxious, bulky, red and chrome beast of a vacuum cleaner from the closet — I’d like to introduce you to the Kirby Classic III, top of its class and best of its species. This prized piece of engineering still rumbles across the carpet every Saturday morning. But I’m so glad I can now watch my cartoons in peace. The more birthdays I have, the more I seem to appreciate the craftsmanship of the past. Quality trumps quantity, every single time. And there’s someone in Raleigh who agrees with me. He’s a quality man himself, an amateur artist, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a world traveler, a pilot and a natural born hustler — Dave Stewart. Stewart was at one time was the top salesman in the world for Kirby vacuum cleaners, originally the Scott Fetzer
46
company. Getting his start in September 1952 after being introduced to the company by his sister in the late 1940s, Stewart took his hustler mentality to top of the food chain within the company allowing him to retire and put his shoes up in 1985. This is the real oak city hustler, and it’s amazing to hear stories about a man who went from selling peaches, to selling liquor bottles found on the train tracks for Liberty nickels, to running a ladies shoes store in Louisville to being the king of the Kirby vacuum cleaner. The same vacuum cleaner that was my Saturday torture. He now sits proud in his chair surrounded by these beautiful pieces of history. A quality man with a quality product. If you are ever in the neighborhood and want to hear a great story about his father being the first licensed pilot in North Carolina or how to remain humble after all he’s seen and done, then check out your local authorized Kirby dealer of Raleigh!
