UNDERGROUND WORDS: HEATHER LEAH | PHOTOS: CHRIS SEWARD
By now, most people know there’s a large tunnel and abandoned series of stores and nightclubs beneath Cameron Village. The iconic red subway cars and vintage marquis murals on either side of the main entrance are cracked and peeling, and the terra-cotta floor tiles are all but chipped away. A fortunate few were able to venture down there when its doors were opened for one night only, but many people under the age of 30 have simply never been down there at all. And the truth is, even if you have been down there, you still haven’t really seen it. There’s a lot more to the story than a few murals in an deserted underground music scene. In the 1970’s, young Raleigh-ites spent their college years partying with R.E.M., Iggy Pop, Muddy Waters, and Jimmy
8
Buffett in the Village Subway. Intimate clubs like The Pier, Cafe Deja Vu, and the Frog & Nightgown were small enough to allow patrons to get up-close and personal with national acts; and since all the venues were under the same roof, for only two dollars at the door, it was common to hit multiple shows a night. Visitors could see Bette Midler at the Frog & Nightgown, brown bag their beer across the hall to The Pier, and hang out with local punk gods like Th’Cigaretz.
“IF YOU HAVE BEEN DOWN THERE, YOU STILL HAVEN’T REALLY SEEN IT. ”
Just like Hopscotch Music Festival gives upstart local bands an opportunity to play alongside huge national superstars, the Subway allowed Raleigh’s local favorites like Arrogance, The Fabulous
9

Knobs, and Th’Cigz a chance to brush up with The Ramones and R.E.M. This blending of local and national music heavily influenced Raleigh’s music scene, sending ripple effects even into today’s bands; meanwhile, it played a major role in the increasing popularity of certain national acts. Specifically, the Subway is credited as helping make R.E.M. the legend they are
14
today. The Pier is also mentioned on one of Jimmy Buffett’s albums, as the place where he first decided to create his Coral Reefer Band. Seriously. Imagine being able to do this today: To walk, carrying an open alcohol container, between four or five different music venues, and visit all of them in one night for under 10 dollars.
Raleigh was much smaller in the 70’s, but our music scene sent tidal waves up the East Coast and out into music history. Local musicians like The Fabulous Knobs, Supergrit Cowboy Band, and Arrogance have been monumental in preserving the history, by sitting down for interviews and sharing old photos, ticket stubs, and more for an upcoming book and historical exhibit about the Village Subway. The book, Raleigh’s Forgotten Underground, is slated to be released
by September in conjunction with an all-star classic punk-rock jam session at the COR Museum on Fayetteville Street. It contains many never-before-seen photos by several local photographers, including John Rottet, with the popular Chris Seward being a major contributor. Underground and abandoned for 30 years, the Village Subway does not deserve to be forgotten again. It represents a magical time when our city helped shape the face of music.

LOW-BROW KING PAUL FRIEDRICH WORDS: RICHARD LIVINGSTON
Onion Head Monster’s motivations are uncomplicated. In the tradition of Rodan and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, he simply wishes to crush the city underfoot. It’s not a lot to ask. The scientists of the Ant People have other ideas and send their weapons against him. “What?,” calls Onion Head Monster. “Why can I not destroy in peace?” The comics are the brainchild of artist and writer, Paul Friedrich. The monster’s incredulous query is representative of the plotlines dreamt up by Friedrich, an unassuming and deadpan Raleigh native. Many of his creations derive from left field notions followed on the heels by a quite logical set of dilemmas. In the case of Onion Head Monster, he pondered Godzilla’s point of view. “Onion Head Monster is just doing what he’s doing,” explains Friedrich. “To him it’s just a game and he can’t understand why these people are trying to ruin his day as he demolishes their homes.” Onion Head Monster, while the most successful property to date, is only one
of a pantheon of characters and projects from Paul’s prolific pen. Hubie the Dead Cow and Sleepwalking Batman explore further absurdities along with Awesome McAwesome (the world’s greatest stuntwoman) and Sloppy Joe (a kid who takes the simplest tasks and makes them impossible). He pitches a recent endeavor. “’Sloth on the Run’ is the slowest chase ever. So what’s slower than a sloth? It’s a sloth pursued by a snail being chased by a turtle being chased by zombies being followed by a glacier...” The work emanating from Paul’s slipstream of consciousness is the product of a lifetime’s worth of artistic exertion. “I was always drawing. I would fill spiral notebooks with these ideas. And I grew up on comics. I remember looking at Peanuts and at Popeye. I wanted to tell those stories.” Just as Paul was ready to begin telling those stories, print publication withered, replaced by the burgeoning of online and social media outlets. At the same time graphic novels enjoyed
19
20
21
a surge of pop culture veneration, offering a vehicle for Friedrich’s early successes, Hubie the Dead Cow and Onion Head Monster. Those selfpublished titles garnered attention from commercial publishers and an accelerated opportunity to create. “Each project inspires new concepts,” Paul says. “I probably write too much. It’s a great problem to have – to have too many projects.” He still transcribes his ideas into a spiral notebook, jotting and sketching for later inspiration.
22
He’ll need that inspiration. Friedrich is experiencing a degree of success few artists enjoy. His books receive critical acclaim. His characters grace merchandise ranging from cocktail napkins to tee shirts to pint glasses. And then there’s ‘Man vs. Liver,’ the shortform comics penned with his partner and collaborator, Neil Hinson. As the creator of the pet rock can attest, some of the best ideas have emerged from hours spent on a bar stool. Man vs. Liver is no exception. Paul pitches the concept. “Everyone has a tequila story.
Everyone has a wine story. They’re one liners. It’s the stuff we say at the bar after 5:00 and before 11:00. Neil and I try to one-up each other. We practice ‘the five minute rule.’ Whatever we say, we write down. No editing. I sketch it, scan it, load it and done in five minutes.” Neil and Paul’s five minute rule seems to be working. At present, they’re negotiating a Man vs. Liver web series. Paul has anticipated taking his characters to the small screen. “We’re
coming up with fifty ideas. The studio will edit that down to ten excellent episodes for the first season. I can see the comic strips move and I can’t wait to storyboard them.” If, for Friedrich, each new project does indeed inspire a fresh concept, his recent circumstances will yield a creative geyser. Life is good for Paul Friedrich these days and, as Man vs. Liver reminds us, “Life is a rat race. As with any race, stay hydrated.”

LIFE
CRUDE
BITTERS WORDS & PHOTOS: PETER FRADELLA
Alcohol has many friends. Gin has tonic, rum has cola, vodka has orange juice, and most of them are my close friends too. But then there is that one friend who drops in from time to time and lights up the whole party. Don’t be fooled by his name, Mr. Bitters is here, and he is ready to mix it up with the best of them. The man responsible for bringing Bitters on the scene is Craig Rudewicz at Crude Bitters. But what are bitters and what can you do with them? Think of it as making a tea that steeps for a long time. It starts with macerating botanicals in an alcohol base. But unlike making tea, steeping can take one to two months for all the ingredients to infuse properly. You end up with a high proof tea that will make you think you’ve gone down the rabbit hole. After some processing and Craigs trade secrets, a bitter is born. As a seasoned bartender, Craig had experience with making his own syrups and mixers at the various bars and
26
restaurants he worked at. “Making a drink is what I’m good at. I can’t cook a meal. If I had to cook a meal to save my life, I’d probably die. But I can make a drink.”, exclaims Craig. It was that passion that led him down the path of experimenting with various bitters and finding new flavor profiles. A recent transplant from “IF I HAD TO the New England area, COOK A MEAL TO Craig noticed that most bitter companies were SAVE MY LIFE, I’D either in the North East or PROBABLY DIE. out on the West Coast, so BUT I CAN MAKE he wanted to bring his love A DRINK” of bitters down south. This initially started out with making small batches, 2 oz or so, for his friends and family as presents. As what usually happens with great products, everyone told him he should sell this stuff! It was time to make it official and become a certified real business. Starting a small business in North Carolina is not too complicated. A couple of forms and a small fee and
27
28
29
you’re on your way. “Because you are working with alcohol, you have to get into the State’s laws and regulations. North Carolina is a controlled state. I had learn how to navigate those laws.”, says Craig. Fortunately for us, he was able to wade through all the red tape. Production started at his home which he quickly outgrew due to demand. Craig’s next laboratory for experimentations were the kitchens of different restaurants that would let him in on the weekends or days they were closed. Not all flavor combinations worked out as planned though. What sounded like a good idea at the time did not always execute as intended. “Some batches came out so thick you couldn’t even get it out the bottle. Some were so strong, I’d open it up and they would burn your nose hairs off”, Craig jokingly reminisces. “I learned some flavors steep quicker than others.” Now located downtown on West Cabarrus St, he has a large enough production space and a retail storefront, something he never
intended to have. “The front was an office and conference area. I was never going work in an office!”. Rather than sitting behind a desk, he is on a mission to educate everyone on the many uses of bitters. He regularly holds classes on how to make drinks featuring a bitter and even shows non alcoholic uses for them. If you are curious about where to start, Craig says his two most popular flavors are Orange/Fig and Rosemary/ Grapefruit/Peppercorn. His advice for the beginner bitter reflects their motto which is on every bottle,“ For cocktails with or without suspenders”. Meaning you can use bitters in complicated drinks or put in a couple drops in a gin and tonic to add a hint of flavor and aroma. Once you get hooked, the drink combinations are limitless. Only a couple years in, Crude Bitters is being distributed across the U.S and even received the coveted Good Food Award in 2015. Needless to say, it’s time to invite a bitter to the party. Introduce them to your favorite drinks. A few drops now and you’ll become lifetime friends.
Crude Bitters is located at 517-A West Cabarrus Street. Find out more at CrudeBitters.com.

GEORGES LE CHEVALLIER WORDS: CAITLIN RUSSELL | PHOTOS: SEANO
The youngest son of a French father and Puerto Rican mother, Georges Le Chevallier was born in Paris, but raised in San Juan and Los Angeles. He’s worked in Hungary, Chile, Spain — as a painter, a sculptor, designer and artist. And while you might expect someone with multi-cultural experience to currently live in New York or abroad, you’d be wrong. It’s people like Le Chevallier who remind us that we have such magnificent artists in our own backyard here in the Oak City.
“YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHERE TO STOP”
If you haven’t heard his name in a while, it’s because he’s taken some time off — and with good reason. After many years of traveling and working all around the world, Le Chevallier has spent the last few years focused on his family, and his five adopted children.
But for the last five months, Le Chevallier has been back in the studio, ready to once again discover his artistic passions. “I took a few years off, because we were going through the adoption process, and I wanted to be with them,” he said. “But you know, maybe it’s how I’ll know if I’m great or not — if I can walk away and come back. Miles Davis took five years off. Michael Jordan took time off, so it happens.” His latest series, which is still in the works, is inspired by his time in the hospitality industry. “There are some really big chefs, like Mossimo Borutta and Chef Grant Achatz, who go to the museums and see artists like Ai Weiwei, and they build food based on art,” he said. “So I want to do the opposite. I want to take their food and get inspired to do my art.”
35
36
37
Along with his culinary inspiration and use of food materials (he paints with coffee and wine among other things), another driving force of his work is simplicity. Le Chevallier believes that we’ve become too dependent on technology, and our learned excellence at multi-tasking is causing a constant state of mental stress. So his art aims to bring a calm to the mental storm. “It’s based on the
38
Japanese term, shibui, where it’s simplicity in the construction,” he described. “These painting have the parts deconstructed, all the way to a point where you only have one thing to look at, which is hard for me — you have to know where to stop.” One thing we hope never stops? Le Chevallier’s drive and passion for his art.

IT’S JILLIAN CLARK WORDS: SABRINA GALLI | PHOTOS: JILLIAN CLARK “Before making someone appear to be beautiful, I’d like them to be interesting.”
Whether we choose to accept it or not, our bodies often unwillingly give away our deepest hopes, fears, and desires. It’s a betrayal of sorts - though the purity of a facial expression can evoke more honesty than words. Jillian Clark’s photography emphasizes the importance of the story behind a portrait. The photograph “OUR BODIES OFTEN is an opportunity to UNWILLINGLY GIVE eternally capture that AWAY OUR DEEPEST moment and Clark uses HOPES, FEARS, that to her advantage: AND DESIRES “I’m a really nostalgic person, sometimes to a fault. I like to collect old things, advertisements, postcards, tintypes, letters, anything. When I’m taking portraits, I feel like I’m adding to a really important collection.” She’s not just adding other people’s stories but her own, too.
40
Jillian Clark is an advocate for people with Trichotillomania - a disorder that causes a person to pull his/her own hair out. According to the National Institutes of Health, the disorder affects about four percent of the American population (6-8 million people) and is linked to anxiety and depression. Clark’s advocacy stems from her own experience: “I’ve been pulling since I was 11, and when I turned 18, I decided to shave my head to try and prove that I didn’t need hair to feel like I was pretty or worthwhile. When I did that, I didn’t know how life changing a haircut could be. It ended up being a really powerful thing in my life.” After about a year, Jillian grew her hair back out and began making YouTube videos about Trich. MTV approached her about being on one of their new shows, but she turned them down.

42
43
Agency: Modelogic
44

46
She was trying to find a way to reach other people with the disorder and began posting self portraits on closed Trich support groups. Jillian explained: “For some reason, something was different about it this time around, and the self portraits turned into an entirely different thing altogether. I ended up linking up with the Trichotillomania Learning Center and now I’m their photographer at their yearly conference.” This April, the conference is in Dallas. She continued on
to say: “It’s my favorite gig of the year. It’s really challenging and it feels like home at the same time.” Jillian has made her mark in the Raleigh photography scene and abroad with compelling portrait work and courageous compositions. Her next portrait series will feature North Carolina musicians and will be guaranteed to strike the right chord.
