L1 Introductory Diploma in Vocational Studies - Hair & Beauty

Level 1

Full Time 1 Year Welwyn Garden City Full Time & Part Time 1 Year Welwyn Garden City

This hands-on qualification includes all the required elements to develop your practical hair skills.

What do I need? No formal qualifications required.

What will I learn? Some of the subjects covered include: l Working with others l Researching a Topic l Developing a personal progression plan l Make-up techniques l Hair styling l Basic nail art

What can I do next? This qualification will prepare you for an apprenticeship or you could continue at college on one of our full time courses such as a Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies.

L2 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies

Level 2

This qualification will develop a complete repertoire of technical skills to prepare you for employment as a junior hairdresser/stylist practising in a realistic working environment.

What do I need? A Level 1 hairdressing qualification. The part time option is only available to adult learners age 19+.

What will I learn? Elements include:

l Health and safety l Client consultations l Shampooing and conditioning hair l Cutting women’s hair l Colouring and lightening hair l Colouring and dressing hair

What can I do next? Successful completion will prepare you for employment as a junior stylist. Alternatively you could develop your skills further on a specialist Level 3 course. Students who complete this qualification are eligible to become a graduate State Registered Hairdresser (SRH) with the Hairdressing Council.

Level 2 NVQ Certificate/Diploma in Barbering

Level 2

Full Time & Part Time 30 Weeks Full time 18 Weeks Part Time Welwyn Garden City

Are you looking to start a career in the barbering industry? This course includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior barber. The L2 Certificate is a part time course suitable for adult learners age 19+.

What do I need? Three GCSEs at Grade3 / D or above or successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification.

What will I learn? l Consultation l Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp l Cut hair using basic barbering techniques l Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques l Dry and finish men’s hair l Create basic patterns in hair

What can I do next? You have the option to work in a barber’s or continue your training at Level 3.

Level 3 Certificate in Barbering

Level Part Time

320 Weeks Welwyn Garden City

This course will develop your practical skills to an advanced level through a variety of techniques.

What do I need? At least one GCSE at Grade 4/C or above in Maths or English plus a Level 2 Barbering qualification. You will require a placement in a barber’s salon at least two day a week.

What will I learn? l Consultation services l Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques l Design and create a range of facial hair shapes l Provide shaving services l Design and create patterns in hair l Colour hair using a variety of techniques (optional)

What can I do next? This qualification enables progression within the industry and is the next step for your chosen career path.

L3 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing

Level 3

Full Time & Part Time 1 Year Welwyn Garden City

This course has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills to an advanced level through a variety of techniques. The part time option is available to adult learners age 19+.

What do I need? Level 2 in Hairdressing or a recognised non-NVQ equivalent, plus excellent practical skills and relevant professional experience.

What will I learn? l Cut hair using a combination of creative techniques l Colouring hair using a variety of techniques l Colour correction services l Creatively style and dress hair l Creatively dress long hair l Monitor procedures to safely control work operations l Marketing and promotion of products to clients

What can I do next? You could work as a senior stylist. You could also choose to advance your career in salon management with further study. This fast-track course for adult learners covers the main techniques used by Beauty Specialists.

What do I need? Four GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above including English and Maths. A Level 1 beauty qualification would be advantageous.

L2 Certificate in Beauty Specialist Techniques

Level Part Time

220 Weeks (2 days per week) 1 day per week (Saturdays) Welwyn Garden City

What will I learn? l Anatomy and physiology l Health and safety l Facial treatments l Eyelash and eyebrow treatments l Waxing l Manicure and pedicure

What can I do next? You could progress to a general Level 3 Beauty qualification or take a specialist course such as Level 3 Massage Therapy or Theatrical Hair and Makeup.

L2 Diploma in Hair and Media Makeup

This course covers all the elements you need if you are looking to enter the industry as a junior hair and makeup artist.

What do I need? Three GCSEs at Grade 3 or Grade D or above or a Level 1 Beauty qualification.

What will I learn? You will study a range of units including: l The art of photographic makeup l Health and Safety in the salon l Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector l Instruction on makeup application l Themed face painting l Body art design l Apply makeup

What will I learn? l Health and safety in the salon l Client care and consultation l Swedish massage therapy l Body electrical treatment l Facial electrical treatment l Electrical science l Mechanical massage l Anatomy and physiology for the face and body systems

What can I do next? When you have achieved this qualification you are eligible to become members of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC). This qualification provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work effectively as a complementary therapist and to work within health care (NHS).

What do I need? Four GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above or a Level 2 Beauty qualification.

What will I learn? l Business practice for complementary therapies l Principles and practice of complementary therapies l Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology l Provide body massage l Provide aromatherapy for complementary therapies l Provide reflexology l Healthy eating and wellbeing for complementary therapy clients

What do I need? You must hold a Beauty Therapy qualification at Level 3. You will be working with clients weekly so confidence and good communication skills are vital.
