facts
Nestled between the rugged eastern shore of Istria, Dalmatia to the south and five large and few small islands which offer protection from the open sea, is the largest bay in Croatia, the Bay of Kvarner. In its hinterland is the green stretch of what is known as the mountainous Croatia that separates the coast from the interior. Most of it is oriented towards Kvarner – which is what gives it its special qualities. To visit Kvarner is a treat, but to spend time in the region is a veritable delight – be it on its coast, its islands or its hinterland. Diversity and difficulty of choice is the order of the day. Suffice it to say that the Kvarner islands of Krk, Cres and Lošinj alone boast over 1300 types of plants – which is more than can be found in some of the European countries. The supply of tourist facilities, opportunities and programmes is just as wide ranging and varied. To put it into a nut shell – on a small scale, Kvarner encompasses the immense biological diversity that Croatia brings to Europe. The world of fauna includes many rare and protected species: griffon vulture, eagles, falcon, hawk, grouse, owls, numerous specie of water fowl; brown bear, wolf, lynx, jackal, wild cat, badger, fox, deer, chamois, mouflon, pine and stone marten can be found in the dense forests of Gorski kotar, along the mainland shore and on the islands. Waiting for you in the deep blue are dolphins – the charming inhabitants of the waters around the Lošinj archipelago. And to cap it all, it takes a mere 30 minutes drive from walking out of the sea and delving into the deep green oasis of the Gorski kotar forests, the Risnjak National Park, and some twenty nature parks, park-forests, reserves scattered across the area…
Učka Nature Park Vojak, the summit of the mountain of Učka, is a vantage point to behold – from it one can enjoy vistas of rare beauty for the full 360o - be it towards the islands out into the sea, the Opatija Riviere practically at the foot of the mountain or indeed across the expanse of Učka itself. And since the peaks of Učka are often basking in sunshine while its slopes hide
in fog, those vistas are truly breathtaking. Among numerous attractions to be found are the striking limestone formations which adorn the area of Vrana and the very peak of the mountain, the numerous paths and tracks through forests or following the ridge of the mountain along which tablets are mounted explaining flora and fauna, and which are favoured by hikers, mountaineers (Plas and Poklon educational trail) and paragliders.

Kamačnik Canyon
9
(village of Vrbovsko)
The track through the 3 km long Kamačnik Canyon, interspaced by numerous small wooden bridges across the stream, leads to a deep and dark lake – which is in fact the karstic spring of the Kamačnik at the altitude of 410 m.
Devil’s passage
(Vražji prolaz) - Skrad
The Vražji prolaz, or rather the Devil’s Pass, near Skrad will take you to the Zeleni vir (Green vortex) waterfall and the Muževa hiža (man’s house) cave. The length of the path is 4,6 km and it takes about 2 hours to cover. Accommodation is available for smaller groups, while the local delicacies and specialties on offer rounds off the experience.
Flat Mountain (Ravna gora)
The splendid combination of plains and mountain is reflected in the name of the largest settlement in the area – Ravna Gora, or the Flat mountain, strewn across an average altitude of 800 m, is surrounded by unspoilt nature, clean air and sweet and deliciously fresh spring water. It is a veritable paradise for mountaineers, mountain-cyclists and nature lovers in general, but those looking for delectable gastronomic experience will fare no worse. Local dishes prepared
with game large and small, with fruit of the mountain - berries and nuts - served in the local restaurants, and comfortable accommodation provided by welcoming hosts all go towards ensuring a pleasant, relaxing time. There are quite a few mountain lodges offering a specific type of accommodation and life with nature for those seeking its closeness. In the Višnjevica hunting ground one can, of course, hunt, but one can also opt for a photo-safari. And there is still more these forests have to offer. Organized throughout the season are the fun-filled days of the Fruit of the Mountains.

National Park Risnjak Risnjak is a mountain massif covered with dense forest that is named after its most popular inhabitant – ris, or as some would say, the lynx. The park stretches from the altitude of 300 to 1500m and covers an area of 64km2. And it is its location – at the place where the Alps come against the Dinarides, where the Mediterranean climes gradually give way to the continental ones – that allows for all types of trees, bushes and other plants to thrive here, and at the same time provides habitat for a wide variety of animals. Among them is, of course, the lynx, then there is brown bear, wolf, wild cat, deer, marten, eagles… The forested areas are interspaced with attractive karstic formations. The crown jewel of the area is without any competition the spring of the

River Kupa – magnificent, wide and deep, the spring emerges at the altitude of
321m and its turquoise waters leave no visitor unmoved. And the profuseness of flora and fauna, especially the flying flowers some of us call butterflies, in the upper course of the Kupa has earned if the appellation of the Wondrous dell of butterflies. Nature lovers, mountaineers and Alpinists who come to Risnjak have at their disposal a wide ranging selection of paths, trails and mountain bike tracks – from the purely recreational ones not exceeding 4-5 km in length to the rather demanding ones going on for 40 km and beyond. The map of all the options is available at the information points of the Park. For those inclined towards a more leisurely tempo a photo safari is organized within the habitats of the beasts of the area, with accommodation provided in the Leska and Lazac log cabins. Recreational angling of the type “catch and release” is allowed on the river Kupa. For more detailed information regarding the Park – touring, accommodation and all else please visit www.risnjak.hr

Fužine
is a small town located on the shores of the Lake Bajer, not far from the sea and yet enjoying all the advantages of the continental clime. The summer are pleasantIy coolis, the winters offer an abundance of snow. All around it there are walking paths and cycling tracks, some of which lead to another lake – Lepenice, or to the beautiful Vrelo cave. Both lakes provide refreshment and good times in summer, be it in the form of swimming, boating, surfing or indeed fishing – which, it has to be sadi, is very
popular. The town also offers good accommodation both in hotels and motels and in private homes (boarding house – a private house which offers food and lodgings to paying guests, it is a place where people live on a permanent basis), and its restaurant serve good local food. If you come, do not miss the opportunity to savour venison stew, bear stake, freshly picked mushrooms and a home-baked blueberry or raspberry strudel strudel.
Frogs in Lokve!
Located close to an accumulation lake, in an area with two claims to fame – the forest-park of Golubinjak and the huge number of frogs that live in and around it – lies a small village of Lokve. In summer it become the venue for the now traditional sculpture workshops attracting many prominent Croatian artists.

facts
Bol is the oldest coastal settlement on Island of Brač. It lies in the solitude of the southern landscape, at the foot of the Bol crown and Mount of Vid – the highest peak of this and, indeed of all the islands in the Adriatic (778m). the settlement is strung along the coast for few kilometers. Its sea is crystal clear, transparent waves resemble a cut crystal.
Island of Brač is well connected with both the mainland and with other islands by ferries and catamaran lines from Split and Makarska (www.jadrolinija.hr). During summer months, ferries and boats sail between Split and Supetar every hour and the ride lasts an hour. All the places on the island are linked by roads and numerous field paths and tracks which offer plenty of opportunities for walking. Just 14 km from Bol and 30 km from Supetar, the largest settlement on the island, is the Brač airport which can handle small commercial planes for up to 100 passangers. The airport is open all year round, except for charter flights which are restricted to the summer months. (www.croatiaairlines.com). European and domestic air-carriers offer very favourable seasonal flights to both Bol and Split, since the Split Airport is also close to Bol.

The Golden Horn Beach
Bol is certainly not short of lovely beaches, but the one that stands apart – and without much competition either – is Zlatni rat, many now know it as the Golden Horn. In fact, this incredible beach has been rated among the ten most beautiful beaches in the world (Lonely Planet, Daily Telegraph). The 500 or so metres long pebble sandbar of a swan-neck shape is girdled by a small wood of pine and oak reaching deep into its core. Its most enchanting feature however is the point which is being constantly moved by winds, and irresistibly reminds one of the tip of a tongue that keeps licking this way and that trying to find some more of what it had tasted and liked.
Bol is a favorite windsurfing destination because of the wind that blows between the islands of Brač and Hvar. Besides windsurfing in the sea channel and kiteboarding near the Golden Horn there are all sorts of water sports that you can enjoy like boat ride, bananas and rubber rings rides, jet-skiis and
parachute rides and diving.
Besides windsurfing and other watersports you can also play tennis in Tennis center Potočine which has 20 tennis clay courts surrounded by pine trees. Also available are the facilities for the five-a-side football, handball, basketball, beach volleyball and exceptional bike routs along the cost of Brač or on the Mount of Vid.

Just 15 minutes of leisurely walk from the beach of Starigrad is the magnificent karstic phenomenon Paklenica National Park with its two canyons: Large and Small Paklenica. Concentrated in a relatively small area is an exceptional wealth of geomorphological phenomena, a diverse world of flora and fauna, and attracive landscapes of unspoilt nature. Some 150 km of maintained mountain tracks and paths ensure a safe and pleasant siteseeing tours around the park. The visitors can choose from the easygoing tourist trails leading from the Velika Paklenica canyon to the Manita peć cave, the Forester’s hut and the Mountain lodge. The cave of Manita peć, where temperature remains at 100C throughout the year, is the only one that has been adapted for visitors (the climb from Starigrad takes about 1,5 h.) Interesting and attractive localities can be found all across the Velebit Nature Park, and they can all be reached by well maintained educational tracks. On Winnetou’s footsteps - While staying here one should not miss the opportunity to visit the original locations of set for mouvie about the proud chief Winnetou The route through what one might call the inner area, can be made individually, (with the assistance of the Winnetou map), but visits to the locations on Velebit are organized within the Velebit photo jeep safari. The Paklenica National Park Public Institution has purchased and renovated the old Marasovići Ethno House in the almost abandoned village of Marasovići, directly in front of the entrance to the Park. The ethno house contains a small ethno layout consisting of some preserved household, farming and other tools and furniture, depicting the way of life, customs and beliefs of this area’s residents. The house also contains a small info-center with a souvenir shop, and a tavern offering traditional food of the area. Paklenica National Park is one of the best known climbing destinations in Europe. The close proximity of seawater gives this climbing site a special charm, making Paklenica Riviera an ideal place to combine climbing and water sports. There are over 360 equipped and improved routes of various difficulty levels and lengths within Paklenica’s climbing sites, so each climber can find to their liking. The main climbing season begins in spring and goes on until late autumn. The Big Wall Speed Climbing is a climbing competition that takes place in Velika Paklenica every year end of May. Lake Vrana Nature Park Travelling along the Adriatic main road towards the northern Dalmatia between two historical cities of Zadar and Ĺ ibenik, you will come across a natural phenomenon - the two equally beatiful and yet so very different azures. On one side you will see the well indented Adriatic coast, famous for its inviting beauty and clean sea, and on the other side you will see the largest natural lake in Croatia. Because it is one of the rare and almost intact natural habitats of waterbirds as well as because of its fresh water springs and biodiversity, the Vrana Lake and its surroundings have been declared a nature park in 1999. The park stretches a c ro s s 57 km2, 30,02 km2 of that being the lake area itself, which streches in the direction from the North-West to the South-East paralelly to the sea coast, from which it is in some places less than a kilometer apart. The lake is unique for its postition and characteristics not only in Croatia but also in other parts of Europe. It is in fact a Karst valley filled with brackish water and is below sea-level. Vrana Lake is a hot-spot with tremendous diversity of ornithofauna of 241 recorded bird species, of which 102 nest in the park area. The park area is also an important resting and feeding place for a whole range of endangered European species. More than 100 000 waterbirds come here to spend the winter. The Park has been declared and inserted in the list of important ornithological areas in Europe.

It is an unusual compromise and connection of land and water which offers a refuge to diverse species of plants and animals, offering them all that its neccessary for life. Overgrown with grass, sedge, rush and reed it looks like field with shallow ponds scattered all over it and covered with permanent flowers of vibrant colours and with many butterflies, dragonflies and other different insects which enable the birds to stay in the reserve and in the park throughout the year. Hidden in the reed of the park, bird lovers can experience watching the birds nesting and taking care of their chicks. Vransko jezero (Lake Vrana) is a destination of particular interest to anglers since fishing on it is possible the year round, either from a boat or from the shore. Cyclists and walkers can enjoy the lake surroundings following the 40km long track that encircles that lake. Along that route there are several excellent vantage points from which one can observe the flora and fauna of this Nature Park. The pine forest that embraces the lake provides shade and shelter, and this special atmosphere of peace is still further enhances by fragrance s of wild plants, the scent of sage.

m l a D Biokovo Nature Park
Biokovo is the largest and highest mountain in Dalmatia. It rises vertically from the Adriatic Coast to height of 1762 m. Biokovo is a branch of Dinaric Alps structure, mountain chain that stretches from Slovenia, through Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina via Montenegro to Albania. Biokovo, as well as Velebit Mountain is the only part of Dinaric Alps that gets so close to the sea.
Biokovo has 16 different peaks that are higher of 1400 m. Major peaks include: Sv. Ilija - 1640 m, Sibenik - 1314 m, Stropac - 1145 m, Vrsac - 1411 m, Sinjal - 1333 m. Because of it’s geographical position, Biokovo is a mountain that has continental as well as Mediterranean climate, so various plant species of both worlds meet and live next to each other. There are lot of caves and pits around Biokovo and very often one can meet wild muflon as well as various bird species and foxes too. The Modro Jezero (Blue lake) Karstic lake is one of the most beautiful Croatian lakes, and can be approached by a set of steps and is a favourite bathing area during the summer. It often runs dry, and its bottom traditionally serves as a football pitch. Crveno jezero (Red Lake) is named after the red rocks at the edge of the lake. This karstic cave is 528 m high, and it is about 281m deep, which, according to some data, could be the deepest lake in the whole of Europe. Crveno jezero (Red lake) is difficult to access due to the steep cliffs that surround it.

Located just 70 km from Zagreb, down the Zagreb – Lipovac motorway, within the boundaries of the Lonja Range Nature Park and the wine growing country that streches across the southern slopes of Mount Moslavina, is the small town of Kutina. Which makes it an ideal starting point for a tour around the mellow countryside of Moslavina, and we warmly recommend a bicycle as the ideal means of getting around. It is most definitely worth the effort – the wonderful natural environment of the Lonja Range, the belvederes, the cultural and historic monuments, the enchanting architecture of the traditional timber houses of Moslavina. And just when you think that could do with a nice break, one of the ten or so wine cellars is bound to be close by offering fine local wines (Škrlet, Moslavac, Riesling, Frankovka, as are a number of homesteads serving delicious and wholesome home cooking. Making one’s traversing still more pleasant and enjoyable is the fact that 150 km of cycling tracks have been clearly marked, the most popular among them being: Wine route, 10,5km: Kutina - Vinogradska – Kutinska lipa–Kutina (Moslavina wine road), and along it there are things to see: the baroque church of St Mary of the Snows, belvederes, traditional timber houses); Petroleum route, 23 km: Kutina – Mišinka – Gojlo – Zbjegovača – Ilova – Batina – Husain – Kutina (and things to see include churches, belvederes, the first seta of Naftaplina ndt he cradle of oil extraction in our midst, traditional timber houses); Recreational route, 35 km: Kutina – Kletište - Mileuška – Ciglenica – Mramor brdo – Repušnica – Kutina (churches, belvederes, the Moslavina wine road, Lonja)

facts A hundred kilometres south of Zagreb, around the middle flow of the river Glina, above the slopes of picturesque hillocks, there is an attractive and widely known thermal spa, Topusko. It can be easily reached from Karlovac, Sisak, Petrinja and Lasinja. The history of Topusko began more than 3000 years ago when the people called Iapodes came to natural springs of thermal waters. The Romans left visible traces of a spa to warriors and Roman conquerors. In the 13th century King Andrew II built a monastery and a church and gave them to the Cistercians. The ruins of that magnificent structure - the portal of Blessed Virgin Mary can be seen today at Opatovina Park. In 1826, Professor Michael Kunnits sent a letter to the Austrian emperor Frances I, describing the thermal spa Topusko. A year later, he published his book A Historical Topographical Description of Topusko Mineral Spa.In the next 100 years, Topusko became a destination frequented by aristocrats and noblemen, where lords, generals, bishops, and other wealthy guests from France, Italy, Great Britain and Germany used to come to take pleasure in fresh air and thermal water.

In the north of Croatia, in a mountainous and hilly area of Ravna gora, Kalnik and Ivanščica, were the forests, meadows and vineyards covering their slopes gradually blend into the Pannonian plain, there lies the County of Varaždin. It is inwrought by its axis - the river Drava, the rivulets of Benja and Plitvica and numerous streams tumbling down the slopes of hills and mounts, while rolling and shimmering in some of their waters are pieces of agate and an occasional grain of gold. It is the land where exuberant clouds follow the undulating landscape, where flocks of houses huddled around churches and belltowers, castles and manor houses in the sophisticated tranquility of their solitude, and lovely chappels and crucifixes of life size form, emulate the flecks of gold in the sands of the Drava river. And where the image of that place changes dramatically: a sun-bathed meadow covered with profusion of modest flowers, joined by the sumptuous irises and orchides, offers an utterly different picture come winter dusk, when the bluish snow, like a warm blanket, smooths down the landscape and tucks it in for the night. The magic mount in the distance is the primeval source of human dreams, the hem of the world in which time and space, and everything that happens, acquire meanings more sublime than the hum-drum of daily life.

Geo-morphological, climatic and vegetational properties prevailing in this nature park provide excellent
habitat conditions for numerous plant and animal species. In addition to this delightful abundance, the Park offers such a choice of opportunities that it can meet the interests of even the most demanding of nature lovers. It is full of mountaineering trails, educational walking tracks, rocks suitable for climbing, there are 104 km of cycling routes, launching sites for paragliders; there are thermal waters in Velika and in the Lake of Orahovac; a track known as the Count’s educational trail leads through the park-forest of Jankovac; there is Rupnica, the geological monument of nature, and the old oak forest – and these are only some of the destinations well worth visiting. The area of the Park
also boast a considerable number of archaeological localities and monuments of cultural and historic heritage, all of which are the proof of the continuity of human habitation from the Neolithic period onwards. The finds from the early Iron Age (750-300 BC) at the world renown locality of Kaptol are undoubtedly the most significant elements of the archaeological heritage within the
Park. The vital importance of the Papuk area, particularly during the advance of the Turkish armies, is born witness to by numerous medieval fortifications most of which originate from the 13th century. Apart from being historic monuments, these ancient burgs - and there are seven of them on Papuk – are an inseparable feature of the landscape. The most beautiful and the best preserved among, the burg of Ružica – a wonderful example of the Gothic and Renaissance art in this part of Croatia – is situated close to Orahovica. Price of ticket to the Nature Park is 0,5€ and professional guide costs are 40€ for a half-day excursion.

Lovers of nature find the pull of the river difficult to resist, as those who just want to relax in downstream boat ride, so those who decide to test its unpredictability or to try their luck as fishermen. Vukovar-Srijem County is the easternmost county in Croatia. Its claim to fame lies in the golden Slavonian plain, fertile river valleys, vineyards and the Spačva forest of common oak, its archaeological sites and mediveal monuments some of which form a part of the world heritage, and last, but by no means least, in its inhabitants. The folk of Slavonia, whose hospitality in this country is proverbial, and it is certainly not an unknown quantity beyond our borders, lovingly guard all their heritage, traditional values and customs. The tranquillity of that gently undulating sun-drenched sea of wheat and other crops, the cool shade of the forests, homebaked bread and a bottle of wine are just for starters on one’s way towards experiencing Slavonia.

Incorporated within the hunting ground is the Lože reserve of forest vegetation and the natural water phenomenon of the waters of the forest manifested as whirlpools. The combination of this wonderful oak forest and its waters with all their phenomena offer a unique place for a sojourn and recreation in unspoilt nature – be your interest walking, hunting, watching or savouring the famous Slavonian culinary excellence. We recommend the tour programme of the area combined with fishing for pike-perch, European catfish and carp, and a leisurely ride in the typical Danube boats known as “čiklja”, all rounded off with a mouth-watering fish-stew for those fond of things hot and spicy, and grilled skewered carp.

Danube river Forever has the Danube has been a life line, indeed a blood line between the east and the west, bringing boats and ships, people, goods, work. Sometimes it is blue and beautiful, waltzing along languidly, gentling its banks; sometimes it is black and threatening, rushing forward, tearing at its sides, spreading fear and devastation – but at all times it is magnificent. Broad and deep, it flows towards the sea. This river, mighty and wide, can best be experience through ride on a tourist boat in the company of a boat-guide and the sound of tambouritzas. We also recommend a romantic ride in a traditional Danube boat (the čiklja) which can take you to Ilok, the town of wine, or if such is your liking – go exploring the backwaters of the Spačva forest.

“My name is Luy. You may be wondering what it this I am wearing – well, it is a stylized version of clothes worn by a gentleman from the end of the 17th century. Now that we have cleared that, let me take you for an exciting journey down the history of the Croatian Danube region. And believe me, life by the great and mighty Danube has always been, shall we say, event-filled and intriguing. In the course of that journey take time to look at places, churches, museum; experience riding in the Danube horse-drawn carriage, walking through the historic parks of Ilok; savouring the
royal
wine
to
the
accompaniment
of tambouritzas.“
Luy is what every tourist would want for a guide – charming, funny, informed. No wonder that last year he was elected as the best guide by the Croatian National Tourist Board. Should you wish to find out more about him, visit the page of Danubiumtours.

Cycling trails of the Vukovar-Srijem County will take you through the main towns in the County: Vukovar, Vinkovci, Županja, Ilok and Otok, through fertile vineyards of the Ilok region, the Spačva forest and picturesque villages sprinkled with interesting medieval monuments. We recommend a sight-seeing tour of Slavonian plains and natural sights in the company of bike-guides (from the Danube tour guides association).

The ”tourist programme “Srijem, here we come” is designed to introduce visitors to the beauty of life by the rivers of Bosut and Spačva in the small municipality of Nijemci. Lived within the fold of the old oak forest on one side and the river on the other, the life of the local folk is quite different from the one lived by those we like to call the “modern” man. Through centuries the exceptional landscape of trees and rivers has shaped their daily routine which to us, coming from the scramble of city life, seems practically exotic. The route is covered by boats and includes over twenty stopping points (rural homesteads, workshops, restaurants) at which all kinds of entertainment some of it in the form of workshops - are organized for tourists. Each one
offers something different, like for instance the construction of traditional river boats, making of smoked and cured meat products - kulen, sausages and bacon, slivovitza – which everybody knows, and other fruit brandies distilled from apricot, apple; peach, blackberry, cherry, sour cherry liqueurs; products made from honey; fine needlecraft (like the beautiful gold-thread embroidery); small river-side holdings and others. If this kind of pastime is not to one’s liking, there is bird watching, horse breeding, riding, village games, etc. etc… www.eko-bosut-spacva.com
