Croatia’s new slogan, Croatia, Full of Life, marked the beginning of Croatia’s presentation and branding on the tourism market. This slogan attempts to show the full range of what Croatia has to offer, relying on numerous large and small events that are held throughout the year. Some of them have been “alive” for centuries, while some have only found their place under the sun in the last decade or so. All of them, however, are more or less related to the culture and lifestyle of the region, displaying the folklore, heritage, and traditions of the Croatian people, as well as offering fun and entertainment. And that’s exactly why you should visit them.

Tourism is one of the most important industries in Croatia and therefore deserves the full attention when it comes to communication strategy, for the promotion of tourism is also the promotion of Croatia. Croatian National Tourist Board ensures that promotional activities help maintain and develop the quality of tourist offer in Croatia. Croatia wants to play an important role in the relaxing, exploring and entertaining experiential tourism markets and become a multi-product destination with lower seasonality, higher profitability and more powerful brand. In October 2014 the Croatian National Tourist Board issued a call for submission of applications for participation in drafting an umbrella communication concept - ‘Big Idea’. The goal was to get a communication concept that will represent comprehensive integrated marketing communication for Croatia for the next five to ten years. Selected communication concept is not just a slogan, but a complete platform from which will emerge the story of Croatia as a tourist destination. The ultimate goal of positioning Croatia is to be differentiated as a Mediterranean tourism brand recognized for the excellence and diversity of lifestyles. The programme supports Strategic Marketing Plan for Croatian Tourism 2014-2020, which defines the objectives as an increase of brand power, average consumer spend and visitors pre- and post-season. Further to the tender and selected concept, the Croatian National Tourism Board has launched ‘Full of Life’, a new multi-channel marketing campaign designed to boost visitor numbers by showcasing the diversity of the destination. To celebrate the launch, on October 1 and 2 a Croatian island was floated down London’s River Thames before docking near Tower Bridge for a two-day ‘Full of Life’

extravaganza. Inspired by Croatia’s 1,244 islands, the island on the Thames featured a medieval turret, indigenous flowers and traditional klapa musicians, with selected members of the public also given the opportunity to enjoy a Croatian ‘mini-break’ in the capital. FULL speaks of Croatia’s diversity and no-seasonality. Croatia is bursting with places and Mediterranean lifestyles. LIFE speaks of Croatia’s vitality and youthful spirit. Croatia is a young country with fresh energy that will fill you up with pure life. Around this big idea CNTB has built a triangular ecosystem of messages. This ecosystem provides sufficient diversity of relevant messages in all of the different markets, for different targets and for different stages of maturity. The ‘Full of Life’ campaign is focused on the rich and varied activities and experiences of the offer throughout Croatia, from historical hotspots to fine wines and world-class music festivals. The campaign incorporated a range of online, broadcast and print elements as well as substantial digital and social media activity (#CroatiaFullOfLife), including competitions, video content and website content. The big idea „Croatia, full of life“ allows CNTB to build a strategy in phases, or depending on the maturity of the target market. The idea is to use rational approach for less mature markets. Here it is important to highlight the diversity of activities, all the possibilities opened up for all our segments. From sunny relaxing beaches, to the most complex historical sites and the most amazing natural parks. Through the diversity it is possible to put Croatia on the map and raise awareness of all of its possibilities. INFO: Croatian National Tourist Board www.croatia.hr

THE ALKA TOURNAMENT 1715 – 2015 Sinjska alka is a unique knightly tournament held every year in August in Sinj, a small town that lies on the northwestern edge of the Sinj field in the Cetina river valley, at the foot of an old fortress in the Dalmatian hinterland about thirty kilometres from Split. The Alka has been held without interruption since the early 18th century, and is the only remnant of numerous chivalric contests once held in some major cities in Venetian Dalmatia. According to the Old Statute, participants in the Alka tournament must be residents of Sinj and the Cetina region, their parents must be from the same region, and they must have been born there. The Alka tournament begins with a procession led by an arambaša (chieftain) and a selected troop of alkars with spears, who are in turn led by the Duke of the Alka and his adjutants, who hold their sabres drawn. They are followed by mace bearers and an armour bearer who carries the Turkish trophy shield, who are followed by grooms, the guides of an “edek” (a riderless horse) which carries the trophy harness, which according to legend belonged to Commander General Mehmed-Pasha Čelić, a Turkish duke from the time of the siege of Sinj in 1715. The troop of alkars ride on lavishly decorated horses, dressed in the original knightly uniforms of the early 18th century defenders of Sinj. In addition to spears, they are armed with firelocks and yataghan sabres. The other participants of this grand procession are dressed in beautiful traditional folk costumes from the Cetina region.
Photo: The Alka Society
Alkars wear a fur military headdress with a plume of heron feathers. They wear trousers and a dolman jacket made of the best quality deep blue baize, richly embroidered with silver braiding. A brocaded waistcoat and a white shirt are worn under the dolman, and they wear boots with spurs and decorative galloon trim. They are armed with a wooden spear with an iron point, and a sabre hangs at their left thigh. Only the spearmen take part in the Alka. The alkars, riding at full gallop, attempt to use a three-metre long spear to catch an iron ring (the alka) hanging from a rope hung across the racecourse, The winner is the one who collects the greatest number of points out of three races. The alka ring (from the Arabic balqa for ‘ring’) is made of wrought iron, consisting of two concentric rings with a joint centre. Measuring from their inner sides, the larger of the two rings is 131.7mm in diameter, while the smaller one is 35.1mm. The rings are interconnected with three bars, which divide the space between the two rings into three equal parts. A hit in the smallest, central ring (u sridu) carries three points, a hit in the upper part carries two points, and a hit in one of the two lower parts carries one point. The winner of the Alka is richly rewarded, and the people of Sinj and the Cetina region praise him until the following Alka as their greatest knight and hero.

The Sinjska alka Museum is located in Alkarski dvori, in the archaeological and historical complex of Kvartiri. This impressive area, which covers three thousand square meters, recreates the knightly game of alka with costumes and accessories, art objects, and documents that have accompanied the alka through its three-century long history. The museum’s holdings include interesting information about the monument complex of the Venetian military quarters (kvartiri) and archaeological findings. The museum exhibition skilfully combines physical and multimedia techniques of presenting museum themes. Visitors are particularly interested in the reconstruction, models, staging, computer animation, and musical scenery that display the customs and historical events related to the alka in an accurate and attractive manner. The museum space and conference hall in the excavated courtyard are the backbone of the complex, which connects the musem’s holdings from the entrance in the south to the duke’s quarters in the north. The two-storey space is especially dynamic, and climbing through the museum’s exhibitions offers visitors a different perspective – a three-dimensional experience. A life-size recreation of a part of the alka procession is one of the most interesting attractions. The battle of Sinj in 1715 has been reconstructed in a separate part of the museum where visitors can experience the famous battle in a multimedia environment. The roof of the museum and the halls represent the parterre, and were designed primarily as the starting point of the alka procession.

INFO: TB Krk www.krk.hr Krk is one of the largest islands in the Adriatic Sea, and it is connected to the mainland via the Krk Bridge (1,430m). You can discover the Golden Island, as it was called in ancient times, in all seasons - in spring, when nature is awakening and the scents of wild medicinal herbs fills the air, or in autumn, when the sea is still warm enough to swim in, the air is filled with the scent of freshly picked grapes, and the olive groves are full of ripe, golden olives.

Every town on the island is a treasury of a millennium of cultural heritage and unique nature. Omišalj features the remains of the ancient Roman city of Fulfinum and an earlyChristian basilica from the 5th century. Malinska has a Franciscan monastery and the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, as well as the Cickini archaeological site. Vrbnik is a town on a cliff 48 metres above the sea, where you will find the palace of the Dukes of Frankopan, a 9th century church, the Vitezić family library, and a Glagolitic printing house. Punat is home to the archaeological site of three Churches of St. Peter from the 6th century, and just off the coast of Punat is the island of Košljun, a jewel of spirituality with a valuable ethnographic collection, a library, a natural sciences collection, stamp collection, and sacral object collection, as well as a nature park with over 400 species of Mediterranean plants. In the city of Krk, you will find numerous galleries and museums, the Temple of Venus, the Volsonis Lapidarium, and the sacral complex of the 5th century Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary, as well as the well-kept Roman-era city centre. Baška is a historic town known for the Baška Tablet, the most significant monument of Croatian language and literature, written around 1100AD in the Glagolitic alphabet, the oldest Slavic writing system. In addition to the Baška Tablet, you will also see a 5th century basilica and numerous church buildings. The citadel of Dobrinj is known for it’s 12th century Church of St. Stephen, the 14th century gallery and Church of St. Anthony, and the Infeld modern art gallery, which hosts fascinating exhibitions of paintings and photographs. All seven of the island citadels of the city of Krk hold exceptional cultural heritage and tradition woven from old traditions and folklore. Sopile, an old wind instrument from Krk, has been entered onto the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The tourist attractions on the island are complemented by exceptional accommodations from hotels to campsites, wellness centres, and agrotourism. Those fond of boats and sailing will enjoy the modern Punat Nautical Centar and Marina, which is also the oldest marina on the Adriatic. The island of Krk features 400 kilometres of hiking trails which can be tackled either recreationally or on guided tours. Lovers of bicycling have hundreds of kilometres of cycling trails at their disposal. The Biserujka cave is an exceptionally interesting attraction, and the three aquariums on the island bear witness to the rich life in the crystal clear surrounding the island. The fragrant Mediterranean scenery is rich in small beaches in hidden bays and wonderful sandy beaches, fourteen of which have won the prestigious Blue Flag for their cleanliness and orderliness. Insula Aurea – the Golden Island won its name in ancient times for its wealth of seafood, fresh fish, shrimp, crabs, shellfish, fertile land, lamb, excellent cheese, firstclass prosciutto, olive oil, juicy and delicious figs, delectable Vrbnička Žlahtina wine, and excellent coastal sparkling Valomet wine. The richness and variety of food and drink on Krk will thrill even the most demanding of gourmets.

POSTIRA - ISLAND OF BRAČ & DOL ETHNO-ECO-VILLAGE
The true beauty of a small Dalmatian town! Postira was founded in the 16th century. A number of stone houses in the harbour bear witness to the former large landowners of Brač; the Lazanić family castle is particularly interesting since it was the birthplace of Croatian poet Vladimir Nazor (1876 -1949). The parish church was built in the mid- 16th century and bears the name of St. John the Baptist, and the remains of an early Christian basilica from the 6th century were found beneath it. There are two stories related to how Postira got its name. One comes from the official books and records in which Postira has been mentioned as far back as 1347 under the name of Postirna (from the Latin pastura for ‘pasture’), while the other, a folk telling, is associated with women from the neighboring town of Dol, who would come to Postira to wash clothes and spread them to dry (prostirati). If you walk through the old part of town, you will feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Moored boats rest around a small bridge from which local families saw their seafaring members off, as well as eagerly awaited their return. The closed shutters of the aristocrats’ houses still keep secrets of romantic encounters at the well, and the sound of games, laughter, arguments, and small talk echo from the stone benches. On the way to the sea, the old tiled roofs leave a special impression, not only because of their traditional building style, but also because of the supernatural beings that are believed to have lived in the attics. Stories of little devils, werewolves and fairies will spark your imagination. The narrowest street, called Pust me proć (Let me pass), is situated in Škarića dvori, and also hosts the largest number of taverns.

You can experience fantastic tastes and scents in every meal and in every restaurant. Local specialties to try include salted anchovies, grilled sardines, pašticada (beef stew with plums), grilled and baked lamb, and mendule u cukar (candied almonds), as well as dolski domaći vitalac made from lamb offal and hrapoćuša cake, both of which are listed as Croatian cultural heritage. Postira is one of the few places where idiosyncrasies, contrasts, and a mix of old and new come together in harmony. A harmony of sound and silence, the Bora and the romantic sunset, the waves and smooth pebbles, farm work and Dalmatian songs. Here, you will experience the traditional southern way of life and connect with the local people — and you will certainly want to come back.

NIN Discover why Nin was chosen by the Liburnians in the 9th century BC as their centre and most important port in the Adriatic, why it was an important Roman municipium, why the largest Roman temple on the eastern coast of the Adriatic was built there, and why it was chosen by the Croats in the Middle Ages as their political, religious, and cultural centre… Its pre-Roman structures are known far and wide: the 9th century Church of the Holy Cross, known as the smallest cathedral in the world, and the 11th/12th century Crown Church of St. Nicholas in Prahulje field. Catastrophic destruction in the 17th century erased many of the particularities of this famous city, however its past is wreathed in many stories, folk tales, and legends. The island of Nin has been settled continuously for over 3,000 years, and you can see evidence of its rich and long tradition in Nin’s museums of antiquities, in the City of Nin’s Church Treasury of Gold and Silver, and the Salt Museum. In addition to its long and interesting history, Nin is a city with wonderful natural heritage: 8 Natura 2000 protection areas with five endemic plant species, four critically endangered plant species, five vulnerable plant species, and 1 endangered plant species. Nin also has fields of salt, medicinal mud, natural sand beaches, and over 200 various species of bird have chosen the Nin lagoon as their home. Nin’s natural sand beaches are one of its trademarks, and once you see them, you will remember them forever. It’s no surprise that some of them have been listed among the most beautiful beaches in Croatia and the world. Their total length amounts to around 8,000 metres, and Nin’s best known beach, also the longest in Croatia (3km), is Kraljičina beach, lined with a natural botanical garden with four Natura 2000 protection areas.

Thanks to its long beaches and its warm and shallow sea, Nin is an ideal place for both families with small children and the elderly, and it is a favourite holiday spot for the romantic at heart. East of the old town are the salt works, which bear witness to one of the oldest businesses in Nin – the production of salt, which is still performed today in an ecologically friendly manner. The salt works are also an oasis for birds, and are home to two especially interesting, rare, and endangered species of nesting birds, whose numbers in both Croatia and Europe are dropping — the black-winged stilt and the Kentish plover, both of whom have been entered into the European Red List of Endangered Bird Species. To the west of the city is a deposit of medicinal mud with a summer open-air sanatorium on the coast known as the Eco Natural Sanatorium, where patients have been treated and rehabilitated under medical supervision for 45 years. Lovers of active holidays will also find something for themselves. Their choices include: the kitesurfing school at Ždrijac beach, surfing school at Kraljičina beach, volleyball on all of the beaches, over 110km of cycling paths and archaeological routes, and a modern fitness centre, while Zaton Holiday Resort offers scuba diving courses and swimming school, water aerobics and other water sports, tennis school, horseback riding, futsal, bowling, table tennis, mini golf, etc. Today, Nin attracts tourists with its especially rich natural heritage, especially its long sandy beaches, rich cultural heritage, and the famous Zaton Campsite. Beginning this year, Nin bears the title of one of the most romantic destinations in Europe.

Celebration of the 500th anniversary of the miraculous appearance of the Virgin Mary – 2 May 2016 The appearance of Our Lady of Zečevo has been celebrated in Nin for five hundred years. It is tied to fascinating records that lead us back to the early 16th century, during the Turkish invasions of the Croatian lands. After a military defeat on the island of Zečevo in the Bay of Nin, the church and monastery were set afire, its hermit monks were killed, and its statue of the Holy Virgin Mary was taken away. How the statue was later returned to Nin, whether by a miracle or by the endeavours of Nin’s residents, is unknown. In the year 1516, the Virgin Mary appeared a number of times to a shepherdess named Jelena Grubišić, bearing a message for the people. Out of fear, Jelena did not transmit the message immediately. On the evening of 4 May 1516, while Jelena was praying at the altar on Zečevo, the statue of the Virgin Mary began crying in both eyes, a miracle witnessed by many church officials and the people on the island at the time, after which Jelena finally delivered the message. The celebration of the Apparition of Our Lady of Zečevo on 5 May was declared by Nin bishop Juraj Divnić in 1517, and it has been celebrated with numerous traditions that have been kept until today. Moved by the documented miraculous events of the past 500 years, pilgrims come from all over to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Zečevo to be healed and to have their prayers heard. In modern times, the Virgin Mary is celebrated in Nin three times yearly. Two of these three times, there is a pilgrimage of boats to the island of Zečevo, and the statue is brought out – 5 May, the day of the apparition, and again on 5 August. The third and largest celebration of the Virgin Mary is held on the first Monday before Ascension every year, and thus the date changes (2 May 2016).

BEDNJA
Trakošćan The Pearl of Hrvatsko Zagorje Trakošćan is one of Croatia’s most beautiful mediaeval castles and historic sites, and its forest park, lake, nature trail, museum, and well-preserved interior make it rightly deserving of the title “Pearl of Hrvatsko Zagorje”. The castle was built in the late 13th Century in the picturesque Bednja Valley, surrounded by the meadows, forests, and vineyards of the gentle mountains of Zagorje: Strahinjščica (847m), Macelj (715m), Ravna Gora (686m), and the highest, Ivanšćica (1061m). In the early 1800’s, Juraj Drašković renovated the castle and turned it into an estate which is now maintained as an example of an unspoiled Romanticist park and aristocratic residence. The knights’ rooms, hunting rooms, and music salon are especially worth seeing, as are painter Julijana Erdödy’s studio, the 15th to 19th century armoury collection, and the restored furnishings, which have been placed alongside examples from earlier centuries.
Photo: TB Municipality of Bednja
Trakošćan has a great deal to offer. The wind at Ravna Gora attracts paragliders, while anyone who fancies something more demanding can try their hand at rock climbing on Ravna Gora. There are 150km of marked hiking trails and almost 550km of cycling paths. The Diana Hunting Grounds and hunters’ lodge should more than satisfy anyone keen on hunting for wild boar, deer, pheasant, and hare, while the lake below Trakošćan castle will delight any angler. The entire area is one of the most pristine habitats in Croatia, and - to give just one example - it is host to some thirty species of orchid alone. Trakošćan is located near the highway connecting Zagreb, Maribor, and Vienna, approximately 70km from Zagreb and 40km from Varaždin, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Croatia. The Trakošćan Hotel is only a short distance from the castle, but there are other excellent places to stay as well: the ‘Pusti Duh’ lodge, which is smaller, and the larger ‘Filićev dom’ on Ravna Gora. Lepoglava, the city of lace Situated in an idyllic landscape between the mountains of IvanĹĄÄ?ica and Ravna gora and bisected by the river Bednja, Lepoglava offers a unique experience of culture, art, traditional handicrafts, and natural beauty. Lepoglava is located near two European motorways: Zagreb - Graz - Vienna and Zagreb - Budapest.
Photo: TB Lepoglava
A significant role in the recognition of Lepoglava was played by its famous Lepoglava lace, which was entered into the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009 as a part of Croatian lace-making tradition. Every year in September, the traditional International Festival of Lace is held in Lepoglava. Another good reason to visit Lepoglava is to see the 15th century Church of St. Mary, a Gothic building with Baroque elements decorated with frescoes by respected artist Ivan Krstitelj Ranger. Not far from the town of Lepoglava, there is a geological monument called Gaveznica, the only preserved fossil volcano in Croatia, a site where the semi-precious stone agate can be found. Its informative trails make it a scientific and educational tourist attraction. INFO: TB Lepoglava www.lepoglava-info.hr

Ludbreg, the sanctuary at the centre of the world Unlike many famous cities and capitals, legend states that Ludbreg is indeed the only town at the centre of the world. Since ancient times, Ludbreg has been outlined by circles with European capitals situated on their rims. It is a town of wonders and legends, and it enchants visitors with its mixture of religious, historic, scientific, and artistic heritage, as well as its fascinating stories.

The Ludbreg Sanctuary of the Precious Blood of Christ is unique in Croatia, and among the few in the Christian world recognized by a Papal Bull in 1513. This recognition was preceded by a miraculous event in 1411, when wine miraculously turned into the Holy Blood of Christ during Mass in a feudal castle chapel. Near the Sanctuary, you can also find the Votive Chapel of the Croatian Parliament, whose construction fulfilled a vow made in 1739. The chapel and the Stations of the Cross make up a unique permanent exhibition of Murano glass mosaics. INFO: TB Ludbreg www.visitludbreg.hr

NEW TOURIST ATTRACTION
Nijemci Birdwatching Centre Recognizing the value of its region and the specific features of its natural environment, and given the fact that its territory is inhabited by around 100 species of birds, the municipality of Nijemci began its Nijemci Birdwatching Centre project a year and a half ago. This project, which was successfully completed recently, was co-financed under the Regional Competitiveness 2007-2013 Operational Programme. The total project value was 1,222,904.95 EUR, EU co-financing amounted to 999,835.84 EUR, or 81.75%, while the remainder was financed by the municipality of Nijemci. The project was implemented in 18 months.
Content is responsibility of the Municipality of Nijemci.
Besides river adventure tourism, scenic boat trips, and traditional food tasting, visitors can now enjoy a new tourist attraction — birdwatching — under the shade of the ancient Spačva basin’s oak trees along the Bosut and Spačva rivers. The project included outfitting the Birdwatching Centre and renovating the Sopotac excursion centre along with its playground and observation post... An arboretum was also built, access roads were renovated for those not keen on boating, and there are also bicycles and boats for rent... A number of other things have been planned for the future, such as hanging bridges and an adrenaline park, all of which should ultimately help make this part of eastern Croatia a more attractive tourist destination. Special attention has been paid to numerous educational programmes and the training of locals and small and medium enterprises in the development of new tourist products in order to promote and encourage the future development of both the Centre and the region as a tourist attraction. Together with of the Vukovar-Srijem County’s Protected Natural Resource Management Institution, the project partner in the Nijemci Birdwatching Centre, a programme called Young Nature Keepers has been executed, which focuses on the education of fifth and sixth graders. The main goal of the programme was to introduce young people to the basics of birdwatching, behaviour in nature, and the biodiversity of the area. It was also intended to promote and raise awareness of the importance of preserving nature and the environment, as well as getting children actively involved in environmental protection at the county level. This project has given the municipality of Nijemci a new, high-quality tourist product that includes the attractions of the area, and allows visitors to explore the natural and traditional treasures of Srijem, focusing on the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development.
