HOPE SPOT

"THE AZORES ARCHIPELAGO IS A MAGNET FOR LIFE. IT REALLY IS A MAGICAL PLACE.” DR. SYLVIA EARLE

Hope Spots are locations, that have been identified as important for the Ocean's future. The Azores was declared a hope spot in 2019.

Dr. Sylvia Earle You can even nominate a hope spot. Read more here: https://mission-blue.org/hope-spots/

MEGA FAUNA

"NUMEROUS SEAMOUNTS, WHICH SERVE AS MEGAFAUNA HOTSPOTS"

The Azores is a paradise for large marine life. Many different species are found around the islands. Some stay year around, while others only visit the area during certain months. Many whale and shark species are here places in the world, where large devil rays aggregate. A true hot spot for diving and freediving.

LIVING WITH THE OCEAN

Can you present yourself & your Ocean link.

I started to fish early in life, to bring fish to my family on Pico. Later, I had the opportunity to visit the other islands of the Azores. I started working for the University of Azores, as a diving technician for the department of Oceanography and Fisheries. I have assisted many ocean projects, during many years. I can reflect of the last 50 years. Today, the color of the ocean, and even the smell at tides, are different. The biodiversity is completely different. Now I focus all my time to protect the Ocean. Many great things are happening on the Azores right now. For instance, Dr. Sylvia Earle are visiting us. Her alliance "mission blue" declared the Azores as a hope spot in 2019.

MEET

"THE WHALES MADE A CIRCLE AROUND ME" Tell us about one of your ocean experiences.

Once, I was out with a group of freedivers and snorkellers. We were in the water when we met a group of false killer whales. At the end, I was the only one still in the water. And the whales made a circle around me. The boat tried to reach me, but the circle was intact. After a while, I finally was able to get back on the boat. I then learned about the theory of false killer whales' hunting tactics: To circle around their prey, and then one of the whale charge towards the prey from the bottom. After that, I no longer freedive with false killer whales.

PRINCESS ALICE BANKS "The dive with Mantas (Mobula tarapacana) is classified as one of the best dives in the Azores. It’s located in a submarine bank named “Princess Alice”, more less 45 nautical miles on the South of Faial Island with 35 meters of depth. In this experience you will have the chance to dive in the heart of the Ocean with these majestic animals. Occasionally you also have the chance to see Tunas (Katsuwonus pelamis), Barracudas (Sphyraena viridensis) and Almacos Jacks (Seriola rivoliana)." http://www.norbertodiver.pt/en/princess-alice-bank/

INSPIRATION

SAILING AZORES Sailors who have crossed the Atlantic, very often stop in Horta. This city is placed on the island Faial. Many of the sailors who stop here, leave a type of art on the concrete surrounding the harbour. It's like a living exhibition filled with dreams and memories. You can spend hours walking around these pieces. You can also find the famous "Peter's cafe" in Horta. A great place to meet fellow "ocean people". "If you sail to Horta and you don't visit Peter's, you have not actually been to Horta."

"Sicklefin Devil Rays (Mobula tarapacana) are easily distinguished by their olivegreen to brown dorsal surface, and dark ventral markings. However, divers sometimes mistake these species for manta rays due to grey ventral markings"

"GLIDE AMONG MOBULAS IN VIRTUAL REALITY" The number of sicklefin devil rays are decreasing. Tourism is a great alternative to overfishing, which is the main cause for decrease around the world. But it is important to set it up in a sustainable manner. Project AWARE Foundation, The Manta Trust and WWF International created the first "best practice" guidelines in 2017.
