WORLD OCEAN DAY

THE 8TH OF JUNE, IS THE DAY WE CELEBRATE THE OCEAN. AND ITS LIFE.

In 2008, the United Nations designated 8 June as World Oceans Day. The theme for 2021 is "life and livelihoods". We join this Without the marine wildlife, there would be very few "ocean people".

HWANG

GYOTAKU ARTIST

Can you present yourself & your Ocean link.

Ever since I was a little boy, the two things that filled my days were art and fish. Art was all I ever wanted to do. The weather could be perfect, but it wouldn't matter as I'd always opt to draw whatever was in my head. I was also equally passionate about fish. Fishing, visiting fish markets, seeing tropical fish at pet store, it all fascinated me and still does. So when I found gyotaku prints pinned up on the walls and ceilings of a tackle shop in Japan, it took later, I've replaced my long storyboarding career in movies and animation for a unique profession printing aquatic life.

Name a marine destination you would love to visit.

I would love to visit and create art in the Antarctic, the Amazon River, the massive river systems in China and Southeast Asia...honestly, it doesn't really matter where. It is all very fascinating to me!

WORLDWIDE PRINTING: ART, THEN EAT Gyotaku is an old Japanese tradition. This was a way to record a fisherman's catch. There are two main methods: direct and in-direct. ‘My way is to catch the fish, bring it home and wash it with clean water to remove its natural protective membranes. After it’s been prepared, I use non-toxic, water-based acrylic paints. I can eat the fish because the paints are water-based, while acrylic pigments are stable so the colours don’t shift." https://mag.hookandnet.com/2019/09/14/201909gyotaku1/pugpig_index.html

TASTE OF SALT

Goose Barnacles

OCEAN FOODIE Goose barnacle is a crustacean. It feeds by filtering the water. The taste is described as a mix of lobster and clam. A culinary luxury. In the old days, it was thought that the bird (barnacle goose) developed from these "things".

When it comes to sustainability, it differs. In some areas it is overfished, and in others a possible resource to harvest. Be sure to check with your region, before you try this type of seafood.

03 JUNE 2021 | OCEAN PEOPLE

This myth remained for a long time.

HARVESTING GOOSE BARNACLES IS A VERY DANGEROUS JOB. in Spain, there is a special word for goose barnacle fishermen: Percebeiros. These hunters take huge risks to harvest these barnacles. Watch the video below, to follow some percebeiros. "Traditionally, barnacle hunting was a male-dominated profession, but together, the González sisters are carrying on a family legacy of living off the sea". High risks during harvesting, in combination with great taste, results in very high prices in most seafood markets. But according to culinary experts, it is worth it.
