WORDS FROM THE AUTHOR This is not an academic report. It is an informal toolbox full of inspiration and opportunities. Something for the motivation! When you have your own business, you often have to know "a little bit of everything". For example: web design, marketing, accounting, technology. When it comes to changing your plastic consumption, there is often just one more thing to squeeze into the schedule. There is not always enough time to "invent the wheel" again. And why should you? There are many good ideas out there.
BUSINESSES HAVE A LOT TO GAIN
It is important to talk about all the benefits that come with reducing plastic consumption. To name a few: a stronger brand, increased credibility, increased sales and reduced costs. Read on for practical tips!

Tourism Coast & Sea DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS SUIT DIFFERENT COMPANIES
While many brands will see trying to reduce plastic waste as the right thing to do, there is also a financial benefit.
The coast along Norway is fantastic, and the resources in the sea are of the highest quality. Here you will find experiences in many areas: diving, whale watching, seaweed safaris, cruises, kayaking, fishing, snorkeling and trips to the shore. In these areas, visitors often come into direct contact with the pollution of the sea. As visitors are often aware of the global plastic problem, it is wise for companies to show a sustainable mindset. There are many benefits to reducing plastic consumption. In tourism, the effort can also affect the visitor experience in a positive direction. This toolbox will present several options for how to succeed. WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE? There are different ways to inform. Some messages scare, while others inspire. And some wrap the message with humor. An important factor, when informing visitors about rules during their stay, is that they are on a "journey from everyday life". What works as a method at home may not be the right thing to do in the experience industry. Here you have to find your own method, and be flexible enough to listen to your visitors. If the method does not work, don't change the rules, but the information tool.
There are many companies, and many different ways. See what others are doing, and use your imagination. Test different ways to reach out. Give something more than just rules. How can tourism contribute to achieve the UN's sustainability goals
What is Travelopment? MEET
TRAVELOPMENT
HĂ…VARD UTHEIM https://travelopment.com https://travelopment.academy
Many companies "drown" in the amount of information they find on the Internet. The digital world can make it difficult to find the right path to the goal. That's where we come in and help them via e-learning, m.m. Travelopment helps small local tourism businesses around the world. Several of our customers at the company Nanook wanted help with concept development. We saw the need to start Travelopment. Travelopment's goal is for more of the money from tourism to go to the local community. Has your company gained any competitive advantage from investing in sustainability? Absolutely! When starting a platform like Nanook, it can be difficult to recruit other companies in the beginning. Companies have to write an application, then the sustainability element makes us stand out in a positive way. We expanded rapidly and have seen a big change in recent years.
"IN THE PAST, SUSTAINABILITY HAS BEEN UNSEXY. A LITTLE TOO MUCH HIPPIE AND BAREFOOT FEELING. THIS IS ON THE WAY TO CHANGE". What do you require from your customers? All countries have different starting points, so we do not have a number of requirements to be approved. We think it's more important that they try, than that they are perfect. We demand first and foremost that they have a desire to be more sustainable. Sustainability is much more than climate and littering. A large part is about jobs. One of the most important requirements we have is local ownership. Do companies need to include sustainability in their strategy? Yes. Now there is a big focus on that. For the time being, companies can get away with a little "green washing", but soon it is no longer possible.
I do not think, I am quite sure, that in the near future one will not get away with doing things the old way. Can a company benefit from including sustainable goals in its work? Yes, but for it to be "good for business", sustainable alternatives must be as attractive as the other offers. In the past, sustainability has been unsexy. A little too much hippie and barefoot feeling. This is about to change. The new generation is very concerned about sustainability.

SOME SIMPLE TIPS ... Tips from HĂĽvard, Travelopment How can tourism companies reduce the consumption of disposable plastic? Do not use disposable plates and cutlery. Use water bottles that you can use several times. Use as many local foods / products as possible. It requires less packaging, less food waste and reduced emissions via transport. First of all, what is "brand" about? If we are to define "brand", it is about that everything you do - your thoughts and attitudes should provide an economic advantage. You should be able to charge higher prices and have better access to the market. It is basic, strategic choices, that define the brand. Do you have to include "sustainability" in the brand? Yes! A sustainable perspective is something you need to integrate into your brand strategy. If you do not includes sustainability in the brand it will also not be part of the business.
https://xy01.com/
OCEANHAB | PAGE 30
"GOVERNMENTS ARE FALLING SHORT" What do companies think about sustainability? Sustainability is still fairly new to businesses. Many people think that it is just about the environment. We are still in a learning phase. This means that the requirements are not there yet. The requirements come with the younger generation.
Here I think that governments are falling short. It should be easier for both companies and customers to choose sustainably. There is a report called "the illusive green consumer". A good report! https://hbr.org/2019/07/the-elusive-greenconsumer
Can companies become more competitive if they include sustainability in their strategy?
Should a company be clear in showing its sustainable commitment, for example using social media, to create "buzz"?
If there are eight companies that run the same type of business, and one of them is a sustainable brand, then I would say that customers choose that one. At the same time, there are several factors that form the basis for the choice. Does this company have a higher price?
Absolutely! That's the whole point. But it is also important that it is "premium brands" that start with making sustainable products e.g. Luis Vuitton, Tesla, Porsche. Then consumers will follow. In the same way, the government must make it easier for companies to follow suit. Sustainability must come from the top.

IF YOU START, THEN YOU HAVE TO COMPLETE.
Quotes to inspire you on your sustainability journey. Good luck. Even small actions can give good results.
BÆREKRAFT IS HERE TO STAY! So you have nothing to lose by using your sustainable investment in social media? You will have everything to gain from it! You become more relevant and credible. More timely. But, it is a tough journey. And if you start, then you have to complete! Does this mean that the company can raise the price of its products / offers? It is difficult to say now in the initial phase. If the trend continues with customers being willing to pay more for sustainable products, then it could be an opportunity. Sustainability and the future ...
https://www.sb-index.com/norway#close
Sustainability is here to stay! In a few years, the demands will start to come, and then you can not escape. There will be more demands - there is no question about it. The companies that are already adapting now have a lot to gain. They get an advantage when it comes to customer position, market, etc. Can Norwegian companies compete with the international market? Or have they come further? I believe that Norway is quite far ahead in the development. There is a report called "sustainable brand index". Take a look at the top 20 there, and compare them with the competition. How big are they and how good are they compared to the competition? If they do better, it's likely that the company's inclusion of sustainability has taken them a step further.

EMPOWER
Can you tell us a little about Empower? With Empower, we wanted to do something about the plastic problem using technology. I met Simen Knudsen from Nordic Ocean Watch. We came to the conclusion that it must be possible to create a global system to connect those who clean rubbish and plastic with those who finance it. We started with voluntary funding. Gradually, we have worked on a platform that is becoming more and more global. It means that producers are held more responsible for the rubbish they produce. Ie. you collect plastic and match it with the responsible manufacturer.
https://empower.eco/ Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=E2ooC80LMjA
Do you notice a difference in interest in Norway and abroad? There is a greater interest internationally. Here you have a slightly newer view of it. At the same time, you start at a lower level in many other countries, and then you are more willing to find new solutions.
"WE ARE TRYING TO BUILD A SOLUTION THAT WILL CARRY ITSELF" In Norway, we may not be affected by the plastic problem in daily life? Absolutely! Many of those we talk to, both in companies and organizations, are people who have often traveled a lot or lived for several years in places with a lot of rubbish, e.g. Indonesia and Africa. In Norway, we really only recycle PET bottles properly. But the interest often starts when you see it out in nature. Are you a commercial company? Yes, we discussed that early. We came to the conclusion that we are trying to build a solution that will carry itself, and that will be scaled up around the world. Then it is an advantage not to be dependent on donations.
Has your focus changed from start-up to now? We started with a simple "we will create a digital space to pay for plastic recycle". And now we have naturally come to the part ÂŤhow do all these systems connect around the worldÂť. They don't! We have realized that we need to build the infrastructure that connects everyone. Big job! Yes, it has to be built from scratch. It's very interesting. For a small organization, we work very broadly.
EXPEDITION | SIDA 2
"BECAUSE IT PAYS TO BE SUSTAINABLE IN THE LONG RUN." What can we say to a start-up company that does not think it is important to include sustainability? What is interesting is that many of these circular business models require more in the early phase, but they are more economical by nature. You need less resources. In 2018, there was a lot of focus on plastic, now there is a focus on circular economy. These are closely linked, so development is fairly rapid. Things have changed. Everyone, from individuals to companies and governments, has seen the problem. Do you think that "sustainability" is just a trendy concept now, or will we see more and more?
I think we will see more and more. Just because it pays to be sustainable in the long run. Everyone wants to do something good, but if you get an incentive to get something back, then ten times as many do it.
Are you transparent, and inform where "the money clears rubbish"? Yes, our technology is structured in such a way that you can match the donations with the location being cleaned. The idea is to see where the money goes. Basically, the money goes into a type of fund, which is matched when needed. But sometimes there are users who say "I want this organization to clean up".

REDUCE PLASTIC FOOTPRINT So a kayak company can pay for cleaning and connect this to their products e.g. ÂŤFor every hour you rent, x kg of plastic rubbish is clearedÂť? Exactly! There are a few different varieties of it. An Eco triathlon cleared rubbish for each participant who signed up. You get a little more engagement, and people get that good feeling in addition to what they have to do. You make a sustainable choice when you choose companies that give away a piece of what they earn to clean up. How are you inspired and motivated? What is your best practical tip to reduce the consumption of plastic in a tourism business? For us, it is about having sufficient time to find alternatives to large and small plastic bags. TORILD
LANGKLOPP
STOKKĂ˜YA BEACH HOTEL
Are your visitors aware of the plastic problem? We have many conscious customers. And I think the demands from the consumer will increase in the future. Some people ask if it is possible to travel here by public transport. Then we suggest e.g. that if they take the bus, which fits with a "lunch to lunch" stay. Is sustainability included in your entire strategy? Or do you take it little by little?
http://www.stokkoy.no/
We take it step by step. We are now in the process of implementing a climate report i.e. climate accounting for 2019. This is the first time we are doing this, and we are preparing an action plan based on the emissions we have. A climate report has 3 parts. Many only carry out parts 1 and 2. We are completing all 3. Part 3 looks at external factors - which guests come to us, which suppliers we have. Then we can make demands to our suppliers.
"THE SUPPLIER INDUSTRY HAS TO TAKE ACTION". We have several companies, and the bakery is ready with its climate report for 2019. One of the measures after the report is that we have looked more closely at our suppliers - we try to buy larger packages instead of many small with packaging. Do you inform about these efforts in social media, to reach the target group? We are working on a new website, where this will be clear all the way. We want to be honest and open about what kind of climate footprint we have, and we want to use it in our customer strategy. We will look at the possibility of giving a 10% discount if you travel by public transport, to strengthen "green" choices. The website will be ready in March.
If we take a closer look at plastic in the kitchen, What are you actively doing to reduce the use of plastic? One thing that we think affect our plastic footprint is the consumption of plastic foil. We have not found a solution to that yet. We have to challenge the major suppliers. What can they offer instead of plastic foil, which is an ingenious product. Maybe beeswax? The supplier industry has to take action. We have composting, vegetable land and recycle bins, but this is something we will get even better at.
OCEANHAB | PAG 49
"BUY IN LARGER QUANTITIES, TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE POSSIBILITIES FOR REDUCING FOOD WASTE." How do you think about disposable water bottles? Are you trying to encourage visitors to bring their own bottle? We put glass bottles on the table, and we do not sell water in disposable bottles. We have not done that for many years! We only sell Farris.
Have you thought about digital experiences as a tool? We are looking at a combination option. That some can sit here in a workshop, while others can participate digitally from elsewhere. Where do you get inspiration from?
You think of providing discounts to customers who take public transport. But do you think that companies can charge more for their sustainable products? Yes, I think so. On a general basis, if the business becomes more attractive to the visitor. We welcome everyone, but we are looking at opportunities to provide the incentive for those who want to travel sustainably, e.g. municipal or by electric car. It seems that you are constantly looking for new ways to become more sustainable? Absolutely! You were the first in Norway with a plastic-free festival. Can you tell us a little about it? We have a report that summarizes the whole experience. Fantastic! We link directly to it at the end of the interview. Do you still run that festival? No, unfortunately it went bankrupt. It had nothing to do with the "plastic-free" choice, but because of wind and weather.
We work with a network of companies, called "Norway's finest". There must be clear sustainable goals, so that customers can choose what is right for them. We also work with several hotels in the region. Here, too, the focus is on finding sustainable solutions. Do you think a new business will survive if they do not include sustainability in their strategy? I think the need for sustainability will increase. We saw that at the NHO conference. Five years ago, hardly anyone mentioned climate and environment, while this year there was not a single one at the conference who did not talk about it. In addition, you have the banks and the large financial institutions, which set sustainable requirements for companies, to provide loans. And when those start making demands, things will happen. Customers and consumers are becoming more and more aware, and can reveal green-washing, because there is a lot of it. The are several who claim they have zero emissions, but then they have only done part 1 and 2 of the climate report. You must set requirements to complete part 3, to ensure zero emissions. Therefore, it is important for us to communicate the significance of Part 3 in the climate report.
TORILD LANGKLOPP
THINK CYCLES AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY ALL THE WAY. Quotes to inspire you on your sustainability journey. Good luck. Even small actions can give good results.
SOME EASY TIPS ... How can tourism companies reduce the consumption of disposable plastic? Buy in larger quantities, take a closer look at the possibilities for reducing food waste, and be aware of à la carte. You can make a lot of what you have. Dare to run out, instead of having too much. It is a good idea to have a plan for using the leftover food or a composting solution. Think cycles and circular economy all the way. We have started a closer collaboration with the bakery. We return unused bread, which can be turned into other pastries. The bakery also collaborates with the local store and uses bananas that have expired to date, to make banana cake. We have a movie about circular economy. A collaboration between Stokkøy Brewery, Stokkøy Bakery and Stokkøya Sjøsenter - "from beer in bread to bread in beer".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2BUDtNnqYA
Something we can get better at is having a sorting bucket in the room, and let the customer be a part of that journey. Now it will be very exciting to finish the climate report, and see if we get any surprises. Some things we do may not play a big role in the outcome. The report will be open, and you can read it on our new website, when it is ready. https://biobagworld.com/wpcontent/uploads/2019/11/Plastfri-festival-er-detmulig-Stokk%C3%B8yafestivalen-Rapport_PlastfriFestivalStor.pdf

USE SOCIAL MEDIA
CREATE
BUZZ
So what is "buzz"? Get people talking about your product and sharing it with others. Let social media do the big job for you! A small effort can have a big impact. For example, the idea of "trash for coffee". This little thought, can be seen everywhere in social media, newspapers, and on the internet. https://www.elevatemybrand.com/bl og-and-press/5-tips-to-creating-buzz
Rather than try to scare or shame people into changing, it is more useful to create a positive buzz around change

INNOVATIVE UPCYCLE
CREATE VALUE
Maybe it is possible to make something new and valuable, from the rubbish? Maybe it can be sold, and pay for further cleaning / effort? It is allowed to think outside the box. Many people have made things with the help of a 3D printer, as in the movie above. https://3dprintingindustry.com/news/the-new-rawgives-the-oceans-plastic-a-second-life-through-3dprinting-154561/ https://inhabitat.com/30000-recycled-waterbottles-make-up-this-3d-printed-pavilion/

VISIBLE EFFORT
ADD XTRA...
By 2025, NestlĂŠ will use 100% recyclable paper on all its products. As part of this initiative, NestlĂŠ Japan has replaced all plastic with origami paper. The idea is that the user should make art from the "garbage". Do something similar! Create something and make an effort to reduce plastic. Make the effort visible, with a combination of environmental friendliness and a fun element! Make the "plastic-free" choice more appealing. Wrap it in an experience you can not be without. Travel and tourism is about "escaping". Offer something to strengthen this. Source: https://mymodernmet.com/kitkat-origamipackaging-nestle-japan/

INSPIRATION AND PRACTICAL TIPS
VR EXPERIENCES
ADD VALUE WITH VR
SHOW, DON'T TELL...
Virtual Reality (VR) can be used for a lot. With VR glasses, we can visit places not possible in real life. Maybe because of physical limitations, finances, or time. Jaques Cousteau has said that "people protect what they love". For such, VR can be a great tool to use. Show everyone the wonderful sea life. VR can be a positive amplifier for the changes you want to see. "VR is an empathy machine" (Scott Harrison) What could be a better tool to change people's habits.

VR can also be used to extend a physical travel experience. The tool can even change people's behavior. They have been used as tools in e.g. antibullying campaigns and to increase well-being. Now we can use VR glasses to change the plastic consumption of companies and visitors.
