Momentous Milestones Welcome to the 2015 Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn Annual. Each year, we look forward to sharing with you this compilation of events held throughout the year at Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn. However, this year, you have a special edition before you commemorating one of our biggest milestones yet: the fifth anniversary of the restored and revitalized Ocean House. This means that with each turn of the page you’ll find beloved traditions such as our annual Independence Day Beach Ball, Tree Lighting Ceremony, New Year’s Eve Gala and many more events that have been part of our repertoire since our grand reopening. We’ve also marked many other momentous occasions over the years, such as the reopening of Weekapaug Inn. With the Inn’s return came many new events to add to our collection, such as Cooking Through the Seasons dinners, the annual Kite Fly-Inn and the Super Moon Paddle, to name a few. To celebrate the many milestones we’ve achieved, in this year’s Annual we have shared with you the favorite memories of Ocean House from some of our most veteran employees—including some who have since taken their skills over to Weekapaug Inn. As we look back on the last five remarkable years, we also inevitably look forward at what is to come. In 2015, we introduce Franco Corso, The Voice of Romance, whose debut performance will have you and your sweetheart leaning in close, and the Block Island Adventure, where you’ll explore high bluffs and hidden beaches as our Naturalist takes you offshore. With the arrival of a new year, we invite you to join us in celebrating the momentous milestones in your own life as we salute our own by honoring— and expanding—the traditions and cultures of these two historic properties.

From Vine to Wine Series Once a month, the Ocean House Sommelier hosts a weekend focused on wine. Meet him at an intimate wine and cheese reception on Friday evening, and attend a wine seminar on Saturday.

In the Kitchen Culinary Education Series On select Saturdays throughout the year, let the Ocean House Food Forager guide you through the steps to master some of the most challenging dishes. “My favorite memory of Ocean House would have to be the night before we opened. We had all been working crazy hours, trying to get everything we needed from new vendors, HR training new associates and managers, assisting the IT team in trying to get the phones and computers to work, and of course, the construction team was doing the final touches. I recall thinking about how this would be the last time, for many years to come, that Ocean House would be empty. I remember the smell of the fresh varnish in the lobby, the light music in the background, the beautiful flowers, everything everywhere placed perfectly. I remember imagining every perfectly fluffed pillow that had never been touched, every freshly made bed that had never been slept in. Jupiter Viewing Come February, Jupiter will be in opposition and nicely situated above the eastern horizon. Join the Weekapaug Inn Naturalist on the back deck for a glass of bubbly and a look through the computerized telescope at the giant planet. You can expect to see cloud bands on the planet, as well as the four Galilean moons first spotted by Galileo in 1610: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. If the atmosphere is particularly clear and stable, it might even be possible to see the giant red spot!

Born and educated in Belgium, Chef Geoffroy Deconinck spent many successful years working alongside Daniel Boulud and David Bouley at their respective award-winning restaurants in New York City, before joining the team at Glenmere Mansion. For two consecutive years (2011, 2012), Chef Deconinck was nominated as Food & Wine Magazine’s “Best New Chef” and has also appeared as a guest chef at the James Beard House twice. As the guest chef for Ocean House’s April Farm + Vine Dinner, Chef Deconinck will prepare a selection of hors d’oeuvres and a fourcourse dinner featuring ingredients from a local farm and wine pairings from La Spinetta.

Originally from upstate New York, Chef Joe Schafer received his associate degree from the New England Culinary Institute in Essex Junction, Vermont. He has worked at many prestigious Relais & Châteaux properties including the Lake Placid Lodge, Triple Creek Ranch, Restaurant Helen Darroze and the White Barn Inn, before joining the Glendorn team in June 2008. In May, Chef Schafer joins the Ocean House culinary team to use ingredients from a local farm to craft hors d’oeuvres and a four-course dinner paired with wines from Hourglass Vineyards.

After the storm, I came back to the hotel, went through the kitchen and just took everything I could find and made it into stews and soups. Chef Karsten Hart began his culinary journey at an early age. Raised in Louisiana by German and Italian parents, Chef Hart’s upbringing and exposure to a culturally diverse assortment of cooking techniques and deep passion for learning inspired the constantly evolving cooking philosophy for which he is known today. Chef Hart received his formal culinary education from the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and has worked alongside Chef James Overbaugh of the Peninsula Hotel and French Master Chef René Bajeux. A strong proponent of cooking with ingredients unique to the area and combining classic technique with original ideas, Chef Hart will pair the evening’s locally sourced culinary creations with wines from Paul Hobbs Winery based in Sebastopol, California.

A New England native, Chef Scott Jones grew up with a passion for cooking and baking, but found himself following a very different path: getting his PhD from Harvard Medical School. Chef Jones found himself going back to his roots and decided to giving the culinary arts another try, without any formal training. Getting his start in Boston’s regarded No. 9 Park, he quickly moved up the ranks before earning the position of chef de cuisine at Menton. Working with ingredients from a local farm, this dinner will also feature wine pairings from Chapter 24 Vineyards, based in Oregon and named for the final chapter of Homer’s Odyssey.

Ocean House Memories “My favorite Ocean House memory is the day, back on April 28, 2010, when we ‘took the building.’ All 100 of the first Ocean House associates gathered on Bay Street and marched up the hill in their matching T-shirts where Mr. Royce and I were waiting for them at the front door. We had a short ceremony where the construction project manager handed over the keys to the hotel to me, and the building was officially ours. We then greeted every member of the team as they walked through the front door for the first time, and we all had a big breakfast together.
