Letter from the President and Group Managing Director Dear Friends, Summer is upon us and everyone at the resort has been working hard to make this our best season yet!

Located in Beach Services, the area will also house our new screening room. In March, we launched the Boutique section of our website. Check out some of your favorite brands available in our brick and mortar stores as well shop for all your favorite Ocean House goodies online.

We have so many things we are excited to share with you after months of preparing for our busiest time of the year.

Earlier this year, we welcomed Jeanne Potter, our new Resident Curator and Director of Art Education. Hailing from Mystic Seaport’s Maritime Gallery, Jeanne is a wonderful addition to our team and a fantastic resource for guests, who can enjoy her classes and art tours.

I cannot wait for you to visit our brand new Below Deck store, offering local coffee and handmade sweet treats like gelato and doughnuts.

Of course, summer wouldn’t be summer at Ocean House without a string of fabulous events. Enjoy all of your longtime favorites, like our Independence Day Beach Ball and

Artist in Residence Series

recent news

On select weekends throughout the summer local artists are invited to Ocean House to share their artistic vision and give a demonstration of their skills. Catch the featured artist in action as the sea air, sweeping views of the Atlantic and more than 140 years of history serve as inspiration for a work of art. On Fridays, enjoy house wine and cheese on the Club Room patio as the featured artists present their work during an intimate reception. Schedule

We are thrilled to announce our newest (and sweetest) culinary endeavor yet! Slated to open its doors in late May, Below Deck will serve a whimsical assortment of soft goods and sugary treats, merging our passion for sweets with sundries and all things summer. Conveniently located along the walking path to the Ocean House beach, the indoor/outdoor eatery and retail space will offer eight flavors of decadent handmade gelato, warm sugared doughnuts and old-fashioned candy. The feature attraction is a high-tech doughnut machine serving up small batches of made-to-order mini doughnuts, cooked and coated to perfection in your choice of flavored sugars and house-made dipping sauces. Get 'em while they’re hot or carry out a baker’s dozen in a convenient Below Deck doughnut bag. While you’re there, browse a curated collection of retail items like luxury swimwear and cover-ups, sunscreen, reading material and more. The sweetness doesn’t stop there—carry your treats around the corner to our brand-new movie theater. Offering the ultimate exclusive moviegoing experience, our screening room will feature cinema-quality technology, three tiers of stunning vintage theater seating and, best of all, freshly popped popcorn. Enjoy daily showings of newly released films, or rent out the space for private screenings and events.

Jeanne Potter Resident Curator and Director of Art Education, Ocean House

No individual exemplifies the expression, “Do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life,” better than Jeanne Potter. Spend five minutes with her discussing Ocean House’s extensive art collection, and joy radiates across her face. An expert watercolorist and self-proclaimed lifelong artist, Jeanne holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts with postgraduate studies at the Art Students League in New York City. She’s spent more than 20 years teaching art classes and formerly served as the assistant dean of continuing education and adjunct professor of painting and drawing at the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design in Washington, D.C. She currently teaches at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Prior to joining the Ocean House team in January, she served as director of the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport, the leading gallery of contemporary marine art in America. With an extensive background in fine art gallery exhibitions, her transition to Ocean House was smooth sailing.

“One of the highlights for guests of Ocean House is to be surrounded by wonderful art, from Mr. and Mrs. Royce’s personal collection to year-round exhibitions of paintings by leading contemporary artists,” she said. In addition to managing the art exhibitions, Jeanne oversees the Artist in Residence Series, in which award-winning artists are invited to paint on Ocean House’s picturesque grounds. During the warmer months guests and visitors have the opportunity to observe the artist at work, capturing the idyllic scenery around them. For someone with a moderate interest in art, those responsibilities would suffice. But Jeanne went a step further and implemented a brand new art education program titled Up Close and Personal: How Artists Make Art. More structured than the Artist in Residence Series, Up Close and Personal is a series of lectures and demonstrations given by leading local artists, allowing guests and visitors to learn about the artistic process, from inspiration to execution. “I wanted to expand on the fine art experience that Mr. and Mrs. Royce have made such an important part of Ocean House, and continue to delight and educate our guests and members of our community through art.” For additional information on the art programs offered at Ocean House, visit OceanHouseEvents.com.

In her new role, Jeanne works closely with prominent galleries throughout the region to rotate the art collections adorning the hotel walls. May/June/July/August 2016

FARM + VINE

What makes grilled fruit such an interesting concept is the nature of the fruit itself. One of the obvious reasons we love fruit is that it’s packed with natural sugar. And grilling caramelizes and concentrates that sugar while adding a smoky and sticky component. Here are some important tips for grilling fruit: 1. Make sure your grill is hot and your fruit is cold. Even though we are introducing the fruit to a hot grill, we still want our fruit intact and cool. A hot grill will give you the grill marks quickly without “cooking” the fruit.

fresh tips fresh tips

Grillin’ Fruit Strawberries! Nothing captures the spirit of summertime better than fresh fruit and backyard grilling! Just-picked blueberries for breakfast smoothies, barbeque chicken, hotdogs and hamburgers over an open flame, and of course blueberry pie for dessert! “But Chef Paul,” you say, “how can we bring these two fabulous summer staples together?” Enter the grilled fruit salad. Nothing will make you happier to be alive and living in the Northeast in summer. Some fruits can be problematic to introduce to the old charcoal hibachi, but fear not! There are plenty of summertime favorites that are ready for grill marks: Pineapple, watermelon, peaches, pears, plums, fresh figs, cantaloupe and honeydew melon all make wonderful candidates for grilling.

2. With an outdoor grill, always leave the cover open or off. Covering the grill turns your barbeque into an oven, heating all sides of the fruit at once.

3. Keep your grilling time short: 45 seconds on each side on a smoking hot grill should do the trick.

4. Use aluminum foil if necessary. If you find those pesky peach slices are getting too sticky and the grill marks are staying on the grill instead of the fruit, try laying down some foil. Give it a quick spritz of pan spray and you’ll be good to go. The foil is so thin that it transfers the heat quickly and efficiently allowing you to get great grill marks without the mess.

Swing into spring with the Food Forager and a special guest as you create a thoughtful handmade gift for Mom. Enjoy the view during this outdoor class while you turn a potted plant into a gift-worthy work of art. 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.; $65/ person (plus tax)

Ingredients 3 local summer peaches, pits removed and sliced Fresh summer lettuce greens 1/3 cup sliced almonds 4 ounces local blue cheese Your favorite salad dressing

Heat grill until smoking hot. Lay foil across grill grates and spritz with pan spray. Grill peach slices on each side until you see grill marks. Transfer peach slices to a bowl while still warm. Drizzle with salad dressing and toss with almonds, greens and cheese in a large salad bowl. Serve immediately.
