The Incredible Caribbean.

J

ourney with us through these pages of OCEAN Style as we cross continents, from sojourning around Budapest to the London home of our beautiful cover model Elizabeth Hurley, to a recording studio in the Bahamas with the ‘King of Cool’ Lenny Kravitz and on to a great weekend in Tobago, the epitome of the unspoiled Caribbean.

We embarked on an ambitious project creating this Best of the Caribbean list and hope that you enjoy our choices and our selections. I can assure you the debate was fierce and vociferous. It was, in fact, invigorating to appreciate the passion with which our contributors sought validation for their personal slices of heaven. In the midst of assessing all the wonderful, luxurious, unique and special candidates, I was reminded of how fortunate we are to be able to share this wonderful region. Far beyond the quintessential sun, sea and sand the Caribbean is a collection of islands that offer the potential for life-enhancing experiences at every turn. What we may seem to lack in efficiency we overcompensate for in simple pleasures. And really while our ‘Best of the Caribbean’ list contains some world-class resorts the fact is the ‘secret spice’ that makes a stay or visit to any of these places special, are the little nuances - from the natural friendliness in Trinidad and Tobago, charisma and personality in Jamaica to the easy sophistication in St. Barths. You may embrace, or repel, the relaxed nature of the Caribbean persona, which often warrants a fruitless search for ‘soon come’ on your timepiece. But all the 600 threadcount Egyptian cotton sheets, exquisite spa treatments by sexy and cool names, fine wines, or expertly prepared meals only take on that unique and unparalleled je ne sais quoi when contextualized amongst the unparalleled beauty of the people and the ‘vibe’ that is the Caribbean. Enjoy!

All the Best,

the Caribbean is a collection of islands that offer the potential for lifeenhancing experiences at every turn.

GABBY’s A 10! I just LOVED your cover with Gabrielle Reece! Not only was it very cool to see one of my favorite female athletes on the cover, I was shocked to find out that she is of Caribbean descent. Talk about things you never knew! She always struck me as someone who had her head on straight, and I’m glad that she doesn’t seem to have changed. She’s as beautiful as she was back in the day when she was kicking butt for US Women’s Volleyball. She’s still a 10!

HAITIAN STRENGTH Thank you for your very moving pictorial on Haiti. So often we see images of Haiti when the people are in the middle of great tragedy. I really loved the quiet dignity these photos gave to the subjects. The Haitian people deserve more than our sympathy and charity; they are a very resilient and proud people, and these photos captured that. I look forward to seeing more from you on Haiti in the future. Sincerely, Christine Williams

CONTRIBUTORS Ronald James. Born in New York to an Italian father and Honduran mother, Ronald grew up in Milan surrounded by a profusion of fashion and photography. During his youth, he spent many days running around the sets of the most renowned photographers including Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts and Chris von Wagenheim. Ronald sought inspiration from artists Joe Eula and Ron Ferri, who aided him in refining his recognizable passion for photography. He explored other professions, but never grew comfortable in those roles. With his camera by his side and after a tumultuous journey throughout Asia, Ronald decided that he would return to his roots and make a career out of his passion. He currently lives in New York with his dog.

Tuere Randall. A Harlem native of Jamaican and American parentage, Tuere first went to Jamaica at the age of 16, and has been partying all over the Caribbean ever since. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, her love of history, culture and good food has endowed her with an insatiable curiosity about many different places in the world. One of her goals in life, aside from visiting every island in the Caribbean, is to “play mas” at Carnival in T&T, St. Maarten, Toronto, Notting Hill, Jamaica, St. Kitts, Antigua, Brazil and Barbados. In addition to her love of travel, she is immensely passionate about animal welfare and is involved with many animal rights organizations, environmental action groups and social justice movements. She’s also a bit of a fitness geek and is currently hooked on the Stiletto Workout at NDG Fitness. When she’s not visiting, daydreaming or writing about the islands, trying to save shelter pets, or spending way too much money on clothes, bags and shoes, she works with a great group of people at the Surdna Foundation in NYC.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve gotten from a professional makeup artist? TB: Always apply sun block before putting on make up! What is the best piece of personal advice you’d give to a girlfriend based on your own experience? TB: drink a lot of water. It does wonders for the skin and keeps the skin hydrated. Clinique Sun SPF-50 Body Cream. One of our beauty team’s favorite sun protection must haves, this oil-free cream contains solar-activated oxidants that prevent signs of aging ($19, www.clinique.com). What do you regularly carry with you for touch-ups? TB: mineral powder and lip gloss by Yves Saint Laurent, eyeliner by Chanel Are there any spring beauty trends you’re looking forward to trying? TB: Sephora is always coming out with great items for make up artists. I look forward to trying their makeup airbrush. I also like trying new scents for Spring, Balenciaga’s Spring Set ($135, www.bloomingdales.com) What is your go-to night makeup look? TB: I’m always inspired by fashion and colors all around me. I like to celebrate color when I go out at night, whether it is in the outfit I’ll wear for the evening or my make up. Eye shadows in the colors of mint or emerald are my go-to colors at the moment. What is your go-to day makeup look? TB: I’m a big fan of “less is more”. Eyeliner, mascara and lip gloss is what you’ll see me wear. It’s also easy to touch up too if needed.

my

beauty secrets

Up-and-coming R&B/Hip-Hop artist Tille Blue is a woman of many faces. Hailing from France, the former Victoria’s Secret model has appeared in a long list of films and television shows, while also boasting a variety of modeling contracts; but she is now making her way into U.S. households and radio stations. Her extensive background in the entertainment industry has allowed for worlds to collide – the singer recently collaborated with U.S. rappers Fred the God Son and Mopreme Shakur, helping her on the way to becoming the next international pop star.

Your evening skincare routine and why? TB: I make sure to use eye cream before going to bed. I dab a decent amount gently around my eyes right before bed and in the morning before applying my make up. It’s great because it helps set my concealer. OCEAN Style suggests Bobbi Brown’s gentle and light Hydrating Eye Cream ($46, www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com) with witch hazel extract and avocado oil. It soothes the skin for 24 hours and keeps the eye area soft and smooth. If you could only carry one item in your purse for touch-ups, what would it be? TB: It’s an oldie but a goodie, Maybelline mascara. I swear by it. Do you believe in aging gracefully or going in for a few cosmetic touch-ups? TB: I do believe in aging gracefully but I do live in LA. A little touchup is okay as long as it’s not over done

What is your morning skincare routine and why? TB: I’m a big fan of Oro Gold 24kt two-step cleansing kit ($148, www.orogoldcosmetics.com). I start with the milk cleanser and finish with the purifying toner. The products contain flakes of gold which repair and strengthen skin and has a long lasting effect.

Never make the wrong first impression again...

Graces by

She touched my arm in the airport terminal as I walked past. I paused my purposeful strut and turned to meet her glance. “It is so nice to see someone in high heels —and dressed up to fly—these days” she said. I broke in a wide smile and tipped my head. “Well, thank you.” I replied. While flying, we encounter thousands of people in a short period of time. Some are just faces we pass, some we chat with on the aircraft, and some we try to sweet talk for special favors. Regardless of who they are, they all make judgments in the first few seconds of seeing you. Impress every time, and in any situation, with these five tips for making fabulous first impressions.

Laura Lee Cotton

Don’t draw attention to your insecurities. It seems like everyday I hear something like, “Please don’t pay attention to my shoes, I didn’t get a chance to clean them this morning.” Well guess what, that’s now exactly what my attention is focused on. Guaranteed, the majority of people will never notice anything amiss if you don’t mention it. They’re probably focused on their own I-hope-they-don’tnotice thoughts anyway.

Dress the way you want to feel. If you dress according to the way you want to feel, others will view you in that same way. I want to feel pretty and polished so I attire myself to match. I’m not saying you have to wear four-inch heels to the grocery store on Saturday morning, but wear something neat and clean and save those worn-out sweats for the couch rather than the coffee shop. You never know who you may run into.

Master the art of introductions.

Few things make or break first impressions like introductions.

Laura Cotton sees the world as full of sunshine and smiles with a few pearls in need of polish. A licensed etiquette trainer, she spreads her good word through her Pearl Strategies image development workshops and seminars. You may reach Laura at laura@pearl-strategies.com.

oceanstylemagazine.com

Few things make or break first impressions like introductions. And mastering them takes a bit of practice. So do it every day! The basic rule is to make sure everyone is introduced in a circle and the senior person is introduced to the junior. Add a little fact about the person you’re introducing and you’re golden. “Stacy, this is Dean. Dean is a whiz at cupcakes.” Not only have you personalized the individual but you’ve also provided a conversation starter. Conversation hero: that’s you.

Use names. So you’ve been introduced to someone new; refer to her by name immediately! Nothing silently screams “I care about you” more than using a person’s name. The added bonus is that using her name right after learning it will help you remember it. Of course, we’re not perfect and we do forget names. If you do, admit it. Honesty in the beginning will warm a heart more than confessions later on.

Make eye contact and smile. People generally gravitate to people who are approachable and confident. Make eye contact and smile. It’s simple. It works. Enough said.

fashion Ria Ramkissoon

Ria Ria interview by

Marisa Swanson

Influenced by love of colour and armed with a textile and clothing manufacturing background, Ria Ramkissoon took a chance in 2001 and began designing handbags out of her home in Hell’s Kitchen. She draws inspiration from the two cultures she lives in - the lush green serenity of her family’s estate in Trinidad, or the gray concrete jungle of New York’s cultural fusion. She merges the two influences into the creation of her collections.

Where are you from originally? Trinidad and Tobago. How does it influence your work? I love colour and mixed materials. I remember, as a child, a school outing to the steel mill and I was fascinated by the steel mixed with the lushness and rich colour of the islands. Most of my bags incorporate luxe exotics in vibrant colours with stainless steel. The balance of the island lifestyle, industrial settings and city life intrigues me. Why handbags as opposed to another type of accessory or clothing design? I grew up in a garment factory so my background is in garment and clothing construction. But I went to FIT for accessory design and just fell in love with making bags. Don’t get me wrong, my shoe collection is comparable to Imelda Marcos. I LOVE a great shoe but handbag making is my love and I’m good at it. What materials do your bags use? I incorporate a lot of metal with exotic skins and leathers. I usually design buckles and have them made in white metal or brass. My Chain Mail is made of stainless steel, which I love, it feels great and doesn’t rust. For exotics, I tend to use snake skin but I like to mix python and water snake or crocodile and python. On my clutches I use crocodile and water snake piping. I love to mix materials. What do you look to for inspiration? People on the street, shapes of things (I’ll notice the way a box is 30

ocean style

shaped and it will inspire me) I have my muses as well. My mother has always been a huge inspiration, she’s a very classy woman. My friends also inspire me with their very different styles. I try to design bags they will all want to wear. What formal training do you have? My parents owned a garment factory so I grew up “interning.” I learned everything from production and quality control to manufacturing efficiently and cost effectively. Then I went on to FIT where I enrolled in the accessory design program. How did you start to design bags and then implement your ideas into the product? I started making my own bags before I enrolled in the accessory design program, but after I worked for a well-known designer for a few months I quit and started my own collection. One bag was stolen at an exclusive NYC club , they emptied the contents and stole the bag. I knew I was on to something then. First, I sketch and then I work with a pattern-maker to come up with size and dimension. Then I choose the leather and the hardware and the sample is done in a day or so, depending on if I get the hardware made or if I have it in stock. What does a typical work day consist of? I start work at 10am with my pattern-maker, sometimes I run around the garment district sourcing leather. I go to my factories in NY or New Jersey to check on production or I’ll be on the phone with Mexico or Colombia (other production) emailing pictures of samples to buyers and sending out press samples to magazines for shoots. oceanstylemagazine.com

Then I’m off to dinner and drinks some days, others I’m home with my dog doing research online. I’m a news and design junkie so I read all the design mags from architecture to fashion. Who are some of your favorite handbag designers? Hermès of course for their simple elegance. Vintage Gucci without the big logos. I love vintage bags in general.

If you haven’t been, what place would you like to venture? Mexico? Barbados? Turks & Caicos? I haven’t been to Mexico and its on the top of my list of places in the world to visit because of the rich culture, food and beautiful craftsmanship that is produced there. I’m actually working on a project right now based on Mexico (not in design)..which I am excited about and because of this I am sure you will definitely be doing another write up on me soon!

What do you love about the Caribbean? It’s my home. I love everything about it. Each island is unique culturally and I love that.

Most Effective Types of Exercise The Secrets to Ultimate Fitness by Executive Trainer Christopher Clarke

You know it’s time for a change, but responsibilities and time constraints prevent you from living in the gym. Well, here are some high-impact exercises, along with a few tips on how to do them, that bring about rapid results. They burn fat and target difficult areas such as the chest, arms, glutes and abs.

Hill Running: This exercise improves your cardiovascular and respiratory systems and maximizes your caloric expenditure, and is a real test to your will power and motivation. Running at an incline is a form of resistance training that targets your calves, quads, hamstrings and glutes; it also strengthens your hip flexors and Achilles tendons. As you strengthen your leg muscles, you also reduce the chances of running related injuries. Additional benefits of hill running include removal of boredom in your regular treadmill routine and increased – explosive – power. By forcing your arms to drive harder you simultaneously improve your upper body strength Synergistic Training: In order to understand this form for training, let’s look at the root word “SYNERGY,” which is defined as a “combined action or function.” In this context, it refers to two exercises performed at the same time to maximize results, i.e., a lunge combined with a bicep curl. This form of Synergistic exercise targets multiple muscle groups such as quads, glutes and biceps (see picture). By combining different exercises such as squat and shoulder raises, calf raises and shoulder presses. Synergistic training pushes your body to new limits and adds intensity to your workout; it’s ideal for people that don’t have the luxury of time. Boxing/kickboxing: Boxing exercises not only bring about amazing results, they help you gain a sense of inner strength and emotional balance. This type of exercise is my number one choice for sculpting the body; it helps define arms, legs and drastically chisels your abs. Each movement – such as a jab, kick and duck – targets those hard-to-define areas. Cardio kickboxing workouts allow you to burn 350 to 500 calories in just one hour and maintains the heart rate at 75 to 85

percent of the regular beats. As an added benefit, boxing and kicking have the real life application of self-defense. Beach Drills: These are a variety of exercises conducted on the beach such as squat hops, sprints and walking lunges. The change of location adds variety to your workout routine. Exercising in the sand forces you to work hard to keep balance by placing demands on various muscles in the body that would not be used on a flat surface. Also, the heat from the sand has a relaxing effect to muscles. Further benefits of working out in the sand: less impact on your joints, extra caloric burn and finishing up with a dive into the ocean for a nice swim. Military Push-Ups: Though my clients often compare me to a “Drill Sergeant” or the Spartacus trainer “Oenomaus” – who often cracked his whip – I have used this exercise to build strength, tone and target core areas in the most petite clients. The essence of a military push-up is maintaining that straight line of the plank position. Assume the starting position by placing your hands on the ground, shoulder-width apart and your feet together. Your head, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles should remain in a straight line throughout the movement. Begin the push-up by lowering yourself in a straight line until your upper arms are parallel to the ground and your elbows are bent to an angle of 90 degrees. Inhale on the way down. Return to the starting position by pushing into the ground, extending your elbows completely. Exhale on the way up. This routine targets your chest, arms and mid-section. You can do this exercise anywhere, and it requires no equipment. Got five minutes in between meetings to sit in your office and twiddle your thumbs? Try a few military push-ups.

A Streetcar Named Desire Based on the Tennessee Williams classic, the Broadway musical A Streetcar Named Desire is directed by Emily Mann and stars Blair Underwood, Nicole Ari Parker, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Wood Harris. The Broadway interpretation brings a new rhythm to the classic story of sex, betrayal and class in the spicy city of New Orleans.

ou’re playing Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire - a role made famous by Marlon Brando. What has preparation been like, and do you feel like you have big shoes to fill? BU: Stage was actually my field of study in college. Marlon Brando! What else can I say? I’ve had great preparation for an iconic piece of work. OS: Do you prefer working in TV or cinema? BU: I enjoy both from a working standpoint. As an actor you want to challenge yourself on the big screen too. (smile) OS: All these years later and legions of your adoring fans still think that you’re one of the hottest men on the planet? What’s that like? BU: It’s a blessing to be well received. The main person to whom I want to be ‘hot’ is my beautiful wife of 16 years. OS: Of course many a dream was dashed and a collective sigh echoed around the world when you married Desiree Da Costa in 1994. You have been married

Underwood plays the part of Stanley Kowalski, a working-class guy that seeks to destroy his sister-in-law Blanche’s (Parker) character. Stanley creates drama between Blanche and her sister Stella (Rubin-Vega) hoping for Blanche to leave New Orleans. Mann plays on the steamy hot relationship of Stella and Stanley – who is torn between loving her husband deeply but hating him for the way he treats Blanche. And Stanley? Oh, he’s steaming hot too. There are moments in his eyes when the passion runs deep for the love and hate of the women encountered in Streetcar. A Streetcar Named Desire is playing at the Broadhurst Theatre at 235 West 44th St in New York City. Tickets can be purchased at www.streetcaronbroadway.com.

for almost 20 years. That’s an eternity by Hollywood standards. What do you feel has been the most important factor in the success of your marriage? BU: My parents are a great example for me; they have been together for 50 years. In addition, I love my wife and we know each other’s core. OS: Where is the sexiest place that you and your wife have ever gone for a romantic getaway? BU: Paris!!!! It holds great emotional value for me. OS: You have three children now. Where is the most memorable place you have visited for a family vacation? BU: I won’t say one place, every place with your family is memorable, and especially with your children. OS: Do you use your social media profiles to engage in online activism? BU: I don’t exploit the medium; however, if I think my voice will impact a cause, I will speak up.

hurley By: Marisa Swanson

Elizabeth Hurley’s beauty threatens to overshadow her intelligence, wit and business acumen, though not if she can help it. The woman who has dazzled moviegoers on both sides of the pond for nearly two decades gives relevant meaning to the term “skin deep” as she discusses the lady behind her vocation, her charity work and motherhood.

E

lizabeth Hurley is a woman who evokes awe, lust and sometimes the need to wipe the corner of your mouth after you see an image of her. After decades of being in the public eye, the British stunner more than still has “it.” And unlike other ingénues who pass their prime trying desperately to hang on to their five minutes, Elizabeth has parlayed her incredible looks into successful business endeavors that will ensure she never loses “it.” I had the good fortune to ask Elizabeth some questions about her work, what’s close to her heart and the personal regimen that help keep her at the top of her game. Elizabeth Hurley was born in Basingstoke, England in 1965, the daughter of a school teacher and military man. After a short stint in a performing arts boarding school at the age of 12, Elizabeth returned home to her roots and became active in the punk rock scene. It’s been well documented the teenage Elizabeth dyed her hair pink and experimented with facial piercing. Eventually, the rebellious adolescent gave way to a drop-dead-gorgeous early twenty-something who still had stars in her eyes for the Hollywood life. Her foray into show business started with an appearance in the 1987 film, Aria, that also starred Bridget Fonda. She then went on to work in the 1988 film Remando Al Viento, where she met Hugh Grant. Though she may not have known it then, the young Elizabeth was about to embark in a relationship that would change her life and take it from one of privacy to one lived in front of an ever-interested public eye. Picture it: the premiere of Hugh’s film Four Weddings And A Funeral. Paparazzi shooting the red carpet up with their flashes, celebrities posing for their closeups and entertainment journalists clamoring for a sound bite from the stars. In walks the film’s male lead with a date, the 29-year-old Hurley, who is as yet unknown to the public; after her red carpet walk, she would gain international recognition. This writer happens to remember the press coverage of the woman who came to the premiere wearing a floor-length gown held together on the sides with large gold safety pins, replete with a plunging neckline. The dress was by Versace, whom Elizabeth holds a special affinity for to this day. She told me, “I love everything Versace has ever produced. I have so many of their amazing dresses, both those designed by Donatella and, of course, her late brother Gianni. Their cut is the best.” 1994 proved to be a busy year for Elizabeth as she scored the first of many modeling contracts, as well as one of the longest-lasting contracts in the business. Her relationship with Estée Lauder spans nearly two decades and she’s been the face for several of their fragrances (including ‘Tuscany,’ ‘Pleasures,’ and ‘Dazzling’) as well as other beauty products. When I asked one of Estée Lauder’s, unquestionably, favorite faces about their relationship, she had this to say, “When Estée Lauder approached me out of the blue and asked me to work for them I was staggered, as I’d never modeled before in my life. Now I’m in my seventeenth year and I still love working for

44

them. They’ve been very loyal and supportive to me and stuck with me through thick and thin. They also taught me to make an effort with my appearance and now it’s a habit. I don’t look glamorous every day, as I work and have my son to look after, but I watch my weight, don’t drink much alcohol, don’t go out much and try not to bite my nails.” Throughout the 90s Elizabeth would go on to star in several films and become a movie star in her own right. Her appearances as the intelligent and uber sexy Vanessa in Austin Powers films and the devil in Bedazzled secured her position in American hearts and not a few libidos. Recently, she’s been seen on television in the nighttime drama Gossip Girl. Known for its soap opera plots, as well as its high fashion costume department, Elizabeth fits into the cast perfectly as a selfmade media mogul who is the very essence of the word “cougar.” Her character oozes not only sex appeal, but self confidence as well.

Elizabeth commented that she enjoyed playing the bad girl, when I asked about her Gossip Girl turn, and joked that it required “less acting” for her. Elizabeth hasn’t slowed down since the rise of her star. And in tandem with a production company she began with Grant while they were still dating, Elizabeth found time to begin her own eponymous swimwear collection. “I decided to venture into Beachwear not only because I’ve always been obsessed with holiday clothes, but also because it’s an area where women, regardless of shape or size, can either look amazing or really get it wrong.” She told me. She’s absolutely correct, of course, and continued to speak to the hearts of the converted as she went on to say, “I like to come up with styles, prints and colours that make people look great and make women feel fabulously sexy at any age. I get inspired whenever I see a well dressed woman on vacation. I spend all my holidays looking at how women dress and feel on the beach.”

The question that most people will have when they consider a celebrity with her own brand is to wonder whether or not she’s really involved in the design and creation process. After all, money can get you most things in this world, including your own business--that you don’t actually have to run. Elizabeth insisted she’s on board with her swimwear and gave a heartfelt response to my inquisition about her involvement: “I am completely hands-on in every aspect; I have a production manager and a brand manager, but the buck still stops with me on every decision, big or small. I visit all the factories, fit every garment, check the pattern grading, design the clothes, pick every fabric, do the sales and, for the first two seasons, even supervised the shipping.” Elizabeth may be so hands-on because she is not only the primary model for her line of swimwear, she’s also one of her best customers. She lives in her hand-embroidered caftans on her own vacation time, in part, because they “go with every bikini.” She also assures that she’s taken a lot of time to create a beach coverup that is both beautiful and completely devoid of too much fabric or frumpiness, something any woman can appreciate.

ties lend their publicity more than their personal interest to so many organizations. Elizabeth also knows how to give invaluable advice on the subject of breast cancer, “I am passionate about talking to women about their breast health. We’re all scared of breast cancer, but we now know that if a localised breast cancer tumour is detected early, it is 90% curable. That’s why it’s so important to get the message out and tell every woman to see their doctors regularly and get a mammogram every year if over the age of 40. I know many women who discovered their own tumours by self examination. It is one of the most important things a woman can do for herself once a month and it’s free. Your doctor can show you how to do it and it should be done at the same time of the month, every month.“ When it comes to work, Liz Hurley does not mess around and the same goes for motherhood, which she thoroughly enjoys. But what about play? Even the busiest of moguls and public figures need some time to relax and enjoy the fruits of their labor. We asked Liz to tell us her favorite spot in the Caribbean and she was hardpressed to pick just one, which Ocean Style wholeheartedly agrees with. She told me,“I’ve had some of my best holidays ever in the Caribbean. I fell in love with the area after shooting a movie called The Orchid House in Dominica in 1994. Since then, I‘ve traveled to many of the islands and loved them all.“

Elizabeth is a mother, an entrepreneur, a model, an actress and also a strong advocate for several charities, most notably her work with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which is particularly close to her heart. “I know so many people who have battled breast cancer and they didn’t all make it. My grandmother died of breast cancer and I personally know six women under the age of forty—all mothers—who fought, or are fighting, the disease. This disease touches everyone in every country.” Hear hear, Elizabeth, well said. She goes on to remark that every October she travels the world rasing funds and awareness for the cause. So far, she’s helped to raise over 320 million dollars and fund 162 research scientists. The woman knows the stats of her work, an admirable thing in a world where celebri-

What does she do when she’s on vacation? “I never do anything much more energetic than Sudoku. I swim a little, but mostly lie still, read, chat and doze. I don’t listen to music on the beach as I love the sound of the waves and the gulls.”

Liz has had her fair share of high profile romances. There was, of course, the 13-year relationship with Hugh Grant, her relationship with American business mogul Steven Bing, that resulted in her giving birth to son Damian, and her marriage to Indian businessman Arun Nayar. She is now engaged to living cricket legend, Shane Warne, who also happens to be a professional poker player in his spare time. Liz admitted that her interest in cricket virtually stops and starts with Shane, having said that her first sporting match ever was one of his games. Though, “Shane entertains me for hours with cricket stories and, interestingly, my favourite ones are all about him playing the West Indies and facing those fast bowlers back in the nineties.” As for poker night as a couple, don’t expect Liz to get in on the action.

oceanstylemagazine.com

She’ll most likely leave the boys to their green-felt table and little plastic chips. According to her, Shane has been threatening to teach her, but so far she has yet to give in. With so much going on in her life, and no signs of slowing down, how exactly does Liz stay so striking? These days, admitting to exercising and taking care of yourself seems to be anathema to celebrity women; instead they enjoy toying with us civilians by saying they do nothing at all to stay in shape, or insist they have the will power to follow through with a master cleanse and lettuce leaf diet. Liz seemed earnest when she said that she’s not heavy into exercise, but doesn’t discount its importance either. She does it, but she knows she doesn’t have to like it. We can all relate to reluctance to tie up our running shoes and hit the pavement or treadmill and thankfully, Liz didn’t deny it’s a sentiment she’s familiar with. “I put myself under pressure to remain slim because I still model my own bikinis. I watch what I eat most of the time, but have little treats now and again. I walk every day with my dogs and force myself to run a bit--but I hate it. I love Pilates and yoga but don’t do them regularly. I am extremely active though, have a lot of nervous energy and don’t sit still much. I do stomach and bottom exercises whilst I wait for my bath to fill every night.”

I am very hands on with my beachwear and also the running of my farm. However, my son Damian gets virtually all my time when he’s not at school. ..We do piano and guitar practice, the dreaded maths homework, supper, bath, reading and bed together.

Her anti-aging advice is in the same spirit. “I love women looking fabulous and I don’t think growing older means looking less good. For me, it’s less about trying to look younger and more about making sure you look at your absolute best. Without a doubt, once I hit forty I had to make more effort and it wasn’t until then that I realised how much easier it was when I was younger; back then, I could look pretty good on three hours sleep- now, I look like a lunatic if I don’t get at least double that. In my twenties I used to be able to exist on coffee, cigarettes and crisps but again, a couple of days of that now and I’d look and feel really scary!” As for her beauty regimen, Elizabeth had this to say: “Estée Lauder has an amazing product called Advanced Night Repair and I would hate to be without it. I‘ve used it religiously for eighteen years. I also use Resilience Lift moisturiser--both the day and night crème--which feels amazing on the skin. Throughout the day I use Creme de la Mer’s Facial Spray--I squirt it on frequently and it’s really hydrating.”

oceanstylemagazine.com

When I asked Liz whether she thinks women should go for plastic surgery or go natural, true to her middle class beginnings, she was bluntly honest. “I’m too scared to have my face altered surgically in case it looked worse. Unfortunately, most surgery looks pretty bad and you can spot it a mile away. Bad botox looks awful as only part of the forehead freezes and people get odd areas of wrinkling. However, I have thin lipped friends who look gorgeous after a little plumping and I know many women in their fifties who have had their own fat injected into their face and look years younger. Natural fillers tend to look better than chemical ones.“ I had one final question for Liz, which doubtless is a cliché in the celeb journalism world but nonetheless still holds the same appeal for readers and interviewers alike. Just what do these creatures of the public eye do all day long, what comes with A-Day-In-The-Life? Some of Elizabeth’s contemporaries claim to be scheduled down to the minute. Others demurely talk about employing help, but only for a bare minimum amount of time and child rearing.

Elizabeth does nothing of the sort. “No day is typical; I may fly to New York to shoot Gossip Girl or somewhere hot for a bikini shoot, or be chained to my desk. My son and I usually go away most half-terms and during the three big school holidays. We love to travel and most of my work can be done remotely anyway. I am very hands on with my beachwear and also the running of my farm. However, my son Damian gets virtually all my time when he’s not at school. Unless there’s an emergency on, I try not to work between picking him up from school and bed time. We do piano and guitar practice, the dreaded maths homework, supper, bath, reading and bed together.” Sounds like a collection of enviable days indeed.

Inside Art Basel

By Heike Wollenweber

Global new-comer to the art world establishes itself as a premiere multifaceted event.

E

ach December, the international art world congregates in Miami for the premiere art fair of the Americas - Art Basel Miami Beach. The renowned art event shows a vast selection of international modern and contemporary art. With the art comes gallery openings, lunches, brunches and parties, oh my. The ‘Who’s Who’ of the art world, the glitterati and a score of celebrities don’t let the free drinks and publicity go to waste. Their effervescent presence lends some cachet to an affair that offers its own high-level panache—in spades. At Art Basel Miami Beach, over 260 galleries showed works by a culturally mixed bag of artists such as Chinese artist and activist Ai Wei Wei, Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Nick Cave, Scott Campbell, Mel Bochner, Kehinde Wiley and Tracey Emin. No doubt, it’s overwhelming to see so many fascinating pieces of art by some of the most celebrated artists in the world, and it stands to reason that one weekend is hardly enough time to get through all of

50

the thought-provoking pieces. But if you do happen to get your fill of the rock-star-artist shows, satellite fairs give you an indie taste of the modern and contemporary art world. More focused on emerging and mid-level artists, the satellite fairs showcase an exciting array of work, including performance art. One such side fair, Art Miami, counted a record 55,000 visitors who enjoyed the work of Robert Sagerman, Zane Lewis and Yoshitomo Nara. Scope Miami was the go-to spot for everyone on the pulse of what’s next in art; it featured spaces curated by Anthony Spinello and art by Retna, Liu Ye, Max Wiedemann and a prominent video installation by Christopher Baker. It Ain’t Fair (clever title) picked out a few significant pieces instead of going for art overload. Some considered it one of the most important exhibits, featuring artists such as Aurel Schmidt, David Arsham, Michael Genovese and Agathe Snow. Not to be out done by its little brothers and sisters, Art Basel held one of the most talked about exhibits of the weekend, “Here Lies oceanstylemagazine.com

Georges Wildenstein.” A performance piece entitled “I Like Pigs and Pigs Like Me” by Miru Kim was also part of the exhibit. Kim turned the gallery’s storefront window into a pig pen in which the nude artist and two pigs lived, slept and ate together for 104 hours. People assume pigs are dumb and dirty. Miru Kim, undoubtedly, was able to debunk the myth after her short stint with swine roommates. From paintings and pigs, let’s move on to soirees: Photographer Jonathan Mannion and rapper Rick Ross teamed up with Reebok at AE District for a fete that featured an impromptu performance by Monie Love. Vanity Fair Magazine selected the Museum of Contemporary Art as the venue of choice, amidst an amazing larger-than-life exhibit by Miami sculptor Mark Handforth, where Donna Karan was spotted having a good time alongside Brit artist Tracey Emin and an otherwise very fashionable art crowd. Naomi Campbell, Pharrell Williams and China Chow attended the Louis Vuitton party at Soho Beach House and Lanvin’s “I Love Art Basel Miami Beach” event.

More than 260 galleries from 5 continents, more than 2,000 artists of this and the last century.

Fashion houses team up with artists on a regular basis to create limited edition collections, and Art Basel is the perfect occasion for such collaborations. This year, the Design District was sprinkled with pop up stores; Dior brought some serious neon highlights and camouflage prints in the form of a special collection designed by German artist Anselm Reyle. Another collaboration was the second edition of the Bally Art Basel collection. The Swiss luxury brand teamed up with Olaf Breuning for a collection of luxury shoes and handbags. Cartier commissioned a stunningly beautiful sculpture reminiscent of a chandelier by Beatriz Mizahne that was simply breathtaking. The installation sparkled with precious stones, pearls and corals totaling 14,980.81 carats. With 90 kg of diamonds, rubies, topazes, emeralds, sapphires, turquoises, opals and tourmaline, this piece was on fire with jewels. Art Basel Miami Beach is always an extraordinary affair and a must for everyone who loves art or loves to attend exciting events with an intriguing crowd. As for me, I am all Baseled out; until next year that is.

ESCAPE Tobago

My Forty-Eight Hours in

Tobago

Os

By Deborah Grisham

T

his vacation cannot come any sooner. Where am I going you may ask? I’m headed to one of the least “touristy” islands in the Caribbean, Tobago. Better known as the sister island of Trinidad, Tobago boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, best local hospitality, and probably the most endearing - it’s the best place to get away from big city traffic and congestion. Adios New York City! I make it to JFK to catch my flight to Tobago. Excited, anxious and ready to spend my next 48 hours in paradise! Friday 6pm: I touchdown at the ANR Robinson airport, greeted by a gentle breeze as I exit the plane and make my way to the terminal. Ahhh – tropical bliss – I can already feel my body starting to unwind. After getting my luggage, I am met by the very pleasant Marcia Arnold of Elshaddai’s Taxi Service and we head off to the hotel. Next stop - Bacolet Beach Club! 7pm: The hotel where I am staying, Bacolet Beach Club, is gorgeous! Developed by former model Gloria Jones-Knapp, it’s an exclusive boutique hotel that successfully mixes luxury elements with personal charm. 8pm: Comfortably ensconced in the hotel’s Café Havana Lounge & Bar which boasts ‘Latin style cuisine with Tobago soul’ I end my day perfectly with the delightfully named ‘Dragopolitan’ cocktail. Saturday 9am: I woke up bright and early and enjoyed my breakfast right from the balcony in my room, where I soaked up some sun and enjoyed the melody of Cuban-AsianCreole delicacies sumptuously arrayed around my plate. 10am: I took a short walk along the private beach. Here I was able to truly appreciate my new surroundings and get some sand between my toes. Ahh…..! oceanstylemagazine.com

11:30am: Marcia picked me up right on time and we head off to Buccoo Reef! Having read up on the reef, I find myself quite excited as we set off in a glass bottom boat with George, our intrepid boat captain, across the calm emerald waters. Donning my snorkeling gear,I jumped into the world below and was immediately captured by the stunning beauty. The reef is home to spectacular tropical fish, exotic marine wildlife and millions of coral polyps. The fish were majestic, in all variety of colors, patterns, shapes and sizes, and seemed unfazed by the humans invading their terrain. The nylon pool was another natural wonder. A short 5 minute boat ride from the reef and there I was standing in the middle of the ocean in the bluest water which did not pass my waist. It was an amazing experience. After the snorkeling trip, we headed back to the hotel but not before I picked up my lunch at Store Bay. On the menu was ‘Miss Trim’s famous crab and dumpling’ - a local delight of curried crab served with flat flour dumplings. Yum! 7pm: After a long nap and soothing bubble bath, I decided to have dinner at the highly rated La Tartaruga. Yes Italian in Tobago… shoot me! Proprietor Chef Gabriele is extremely charismatic as he floats through the dining room as much host as friend to his various guests. The restaurant is relatively small (probably seating under forty) but has an impressive wine selection and enduring charm. Chef Gabriele is quite the conversationalist but in that infectious Italian manner, completely lovable (not to mention easy on the eyes). It would have to be said for this ‘self-dubbed Italian food connoisseur’ La Tartaruga lived up to its fine culinary reputation. Sunday 6am: The next morning I decided to watch the sunrise on my last morning in paradise. I enjoyed a long walk along the beach basking

in the peace and serenity of stillness, interrupted by nothing but the harmony of the crashing waves. 9am: I headed to Kariwak Village, a holistic haven that allows its guests to ‘retreat, recharge and renew’. I had breakfast at their restaurant which specializes in healthy food and uses fresh herbs and seasonings grown in their garden. 10am: It was time for yoga; perfect for recharging my batteries, mentally and physically. Long live the ‘downward facing dog’. 12pm: After yoga, I enjoyed an excellent massage after which my body felt fully relaxed. Do I really have to catch a flight back to the concrete jungle that is New York in a few short hours?Aargh! 2pm: Trusty Marcia, who was waiting after my massage, took me back to the hotel where I packed up and enjoyed one last ‘Dragopolitan’ before we headed to the airport. 6pm: Sooner than I can remember even getting here, it was time to go. Back to life and my reality.I enjoyed my whirlwind trip to Tobago but cannot wait to go for an extended stay. I will be back Tobago, I will be back!

Best Place to Practice Your Tiger Woods Stroke The Tryall Club, Jamaica The newly renovated 18 hole, championship golf course at The Tryall Club is one of the finest, not just in the Caribbean, but in the world.

BEST ISLAND KEEPSAKE Haitian Art Haiti boasts some of the most richly crafted and beautiful folk art in the world. Often eclipsed by its reputation as the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, perhaps nowhere is the pride, character and resilience of the Haitian people more evident than in their magnificent works of art. Best Place to START a Family Rockhouse Hotel, Negril, Jamaica Don’t let the prehistoric name fool you, the amenities here are sleek and ultramodern even if the actual villas are constructed of roughly hewn stone. All that earthy architecture and the primal, raw surroundings will get you in the mood for all kinds of carnal delights. And the four poster beds with mosquito netting are hella sexy. Best Dive Spot Cayman Islands Translucent waters, abundant marine life, swimming with the Stingrays and undersea shipwrecks to explore, the waters surrounding the Cayman Islands are a diver’s fantasyland.

Best Place to Party like a Rock Star (or with Them) Nikki Beach, St. Barths You never know who might be dancing on the banquette next to you at the St. Barths outpost of Nikki Beach, especially during the high season between Christmas and New Year. Whether you want to party with a rock star, like one, or both, no place in the Caribbean will give you more access to the celeb set than St. Barths. After all, just making it there during high season makes you something of a VIP. BEST PLACE TO HANG 10 Barbados Make like US surfing champ Kelly Slater and head to Barbados, long known as one of the premiere surfing meccas in the Caribbean. Its Eastern Coast gets the break waves from the Atlantic Ocean, causing magnificent swells. Best Caribbean Flavor Spa Treatment Tropical Fruit Smoother at the Six Senses Spa, DR The Six Senses Spa’s ‘Tropical Fruit Smoother’ treatment Punta Cana, DR sounds good enough to eat. Best Spa Experience Curtain Bluff Spa, Antigua Surroundings so serene that time seems to stand still. Wide expansive ocean views that will take your breath away. Curtain Bluff is a serenade for the senses with a list of services that are sublime in their ability to pamper and rejuvenate the soul. BEST PLACE FOR RETAIL THERAPY Yacht Haven Grande, US Virgin Islands Last we checked, diamonds were still a girl’s best friend, so taking advantage of all the jewelry bargains to be found in USVI is as essential as breathing. Visit the shops at the Yacht Haven Grande where you’ll find David Yurman, John Hardy and Lagos, in addition to discounted Cartier, Rolex and other premium brands. Best Place to Compare Whose Yacht is Bigger St. Barths Ok, no need to really compare. Russian businessman and art impresario Roman Abramovich owns the Eclipse - the largest privately owned yacht on the planet. This floating city makes every other mega yacht that has come before it look like a dinghy (sorry, Paul Allen). Still, there is no place to spy a more impressive fleet of luxury vessels anywhere in the Caribbean. And during high season, from atop the lookout point leaving Gustavia on the way to St. Jean, the yachts outside the harbor look like a scene from the movie Troy. Best Place to Take the Family Beaches Resort, Turks & Caicos Attractions including a 45,000 square foot water park, the lovable characters from Sesame Street, a teen disco and XBox 360s in every room make a stay here a dream vacation for kids of all ages. Best Place for a Quickie (Vacay) Puerto Rico With a multitude of flight options from NYC, it’s possible to leave work early on a Friday afternoon, get on a 6 o’clock flight and arrive in San Juan by 10, airport, hotel, salsa club, sleep, wake up, breakfast, beach, hotel, casino, sleep, breakfast, last minute shopping/sight-seeing, check out, airport, home…all within 48 hours. Got a three day weekend? JetBlue has just added regional connecting service making it possible for you to squeeze in an overnight trip to St. Thomas or other neighboring islands.

Best Place to Pretend You Don’t Want to be Photographed by Paparazzi Anguilla Anguilla is the place the celebrities visit when they get tired of being photographed in St. Barths. Go there if you’re totally unfazed by the rich and famous (and then remember to DISCREETLY sneak a peek). Best Place to Nurse a Post-Carnival Hangover Tobago If the days leading up to Carnival in Trinidad are considered the Caribbean’s biggest rum fest, then it’s only natural that serene Tobago is the best spot to nurse a hangover. Best Place to Forget Your Ex Trinidad With one of the highest and most diverse multi-culti populations in the Caribbean, the men and women of Trinidad come in all kinds of delicious flavors guaranteed to appeal to any man or woman’s sweet tooth. Rockstar Silver Bedroom, Eden Rock

Best Hotel To Make Music Eden Rock, St. Barths OK. This one was really close. Both Eden Rock in St. Barth and Gee Jam in Jamaica are perched atop rock promontories offering stunning ocean vistas and feature luxury accommodations, exquisite dining, service par excellence and state-of-the-art recording facilities. And although Gee Jam is tucked away in secluded Port Antonio surrounded by lush, dense foliage, making it the perfect place to relax, unwind and ignite a creative spark, the steady influx of the celeb set in tony St. Barth frolicking along its paparazzi-ready beaches in St. Jean ensure that this is the perfect place to make a Pop chart hit should you feel a sudden collabo coming on (Ahoy, is that Rihanna over there?). Besides, it’s nothing short of amazing that you can actually record on THE same console that John Lennon used to make his masterpiece “Imagine.” How’s that for channeling genius?

Best place to “Let It Ride” Aruba We prefer the more intimate feel of Aruba’s casinos to the Vegas Style Casinos you might find elsewhere in the Caribbean. Best Unspoilt Beach Anguilla With crystalline waters and untainted shores, Anguilla boasts some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world. Motorized watersports are forbidden in an attempt to keep them that way. Best Place to Kick Back and Do Nothing at All Bequia Have you ever even heard of Bequia (pronounced Bekway)? No? Nuff said.

Round Hill

Best Place to Dance on the Table Top Le-Ti St. Barth, St. Barths What this storied hot spot lacks in convenience (It’s located a bit of a distance from the bustling port city of Gustavia in the more quiet section of Pointe Milou.) it more than makes up for in personality. Enjoy the decadent cabaret inspired vibe, where the host could pass for Captain Jack Sparrow’s younger brother, and the wait staff wear different themed costumes depending on what’s going on. Just be warned, while dancing on the table tops in designer minidresses is de rigueur, underwear, however, is optional. Most Titillating Island St. Maarten For better or for worse, St. Maarten boasts the highest concentration of strip clubs per capita in the Caribbean.

Best Isle for a Trip Down the Aisle Round Hill Resort & Spa, Jamaica Immaculate attention to detail, award-winning service, gorgeous panoramic views of the sea, well-manicured grounds, luxury accommodations, accessibility and genuine Caribbean hospitality, plus a multitude of options to make your special day one you’ll treasure forever catapults Round Hill in Montego Bay to the top of our list for the ultimate destination wedding.

Best Place to ‘Light Up’ Havana, Cuba Despite the mass exodus of Cuban cigar makers after the revolution of 1959, Cuba sets the standard for the world’s best cigars -- no surprise there. What you might not know is where to smoke said cigar if you ever happen to be in Cuba. We like La Bodeguita del Medio for its quaint, authentic feel. Locals still patronize this long-standing establishment, which has been graced by the likes of Marlene Dietrich and Nat King Cole. So light up a stogie and take it all in. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better than stashing a few cigars as contraband in your checked luggage...

Best Place to Go Topless Guadeloupe While all of the islands of the French West Indies have a very European (read: nonplussed) attitude toward nudity, fewer Americans visit Guadeloupe, which means that you’ll be met with fewer gawkers as you bathe au naturale on their absolutely captivating beaches.

Best Place to Go Back in Time Havana, Cuba While all the islands have their beautiful histories to tell, Havana is, quite literally, a living, breathing testament to yesteryear. Tough as nails old American autos and art deco architecture transport you to the past better than any time capsule ever could.

Sexiest Hotel Bar Cane Bar - Jalousie Resort, St. Lucia Sultry and sleek, sexy and chic. With its dramatically colored asymmetric furniture, stark white daybeds and seductive low lighting juxtaposed against slate grey walls, The Cane at the Jalousie Hotel in Soufriere might be the perfect place to stage a seduction or make an indecent proposal.

Eco-conscious Appliances Save Electricity Woes

It’s the heartbeat of your home -- the place where fresh traditions are forged with every new ingredient and family bonds are forever strengthened through familiar sounds, tastes and distinctive smells. For many kinsfolk, the kitchen is the most utilized room in the house but according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), it is also the most wasteful. Amassing almost 50 per cent of the home’s energy consumption, lighting, refrigeration and cooking beget big energy bills. Add dishwashers, dryers and washing machines and you’ve got an environmental hotspot! In the wake of the world’s rising energy and environmental concerns, many homeowners are going ‘green’ and seizing every opportunity to reuse, refresh and recycle. However, according to the US DOE, the most impactful step towards conservation comes from using energy-efficient appliances. “Most homeowners today are keen to go green to lessen their ecological footprints and lower their bottom line but aren’t aware that the true culprits behind their big energy bills are their environmentallyincompatible appliances” said Paul Grey, Product

oceanstylemagazine.com

Manager for Energy Solutions at Jamaica’s Appliance Traders Limited. Environmentally-incompatible appliances are those household electronics that use significant kilowatt supply, whether simply plugged in or in use, resulting in hiked energy bills and significant environmental damage. In Jamaica and elsewhere, there has been public and private sector outcry at the continued spike in energy costs, prompting consumers to take a proactive stance on their consumption patterns. Electronics producers have responded in tow with innovative energy and eco-conscious solutions. Boasting a complete line of energy-efficient electronics at Appliance Traders Limited, Grey explains that eco-conscious equipment can save consumers almost a third of their energy costs, “It’s a fact that low energy emission products not only curtail environmental waste but also curb consumer energy spend by at least 30 per cent.” Outdated and aged appliances – beyond ten years old and without the trademark EnergyStar certification, are not efficient and drain electricity, “A typical refrigerator with a top-mounted

freezer made in the nineties uses twice the energy of a modern ‘green’ appliance. A more energy efficient refrigerator such as the Panasonic Steel Inverter model which offers almost 40 per cent saving on electricity bills” says Grey. In the case of eco-engineered dishwashers and washing machines, the newer models including brands like Frigidaire, he relayed not only use less electricity but they also use less water, saving the consumer money on both utility bills. Similarly, for air conditioning units, green-technology leader, Panasonic boasts the most impressive range of eco-models that not only detect unnecessary waste of energy but through their Inverter and Econavi technology run on minimal power with precise temperature control. With everything from curling irons to microwaves adding to energy expenditure, Grey says that eco-friendly electronics will yield significant monetary returns before the end of its lifespan, “Consumers should certainly look to make environmentally-friendly choices when purchasing and using appliances as they literally pay for themselves in what they save on energy consumption and utility bills,” he said.

The Audi A1

The A1 feels like a sports car in its handling, precision and comfort. This is a car that I would happily drive at every opportunity. - Anthony Desnoes brand manager audi jamaica The A1 impresses with exemplary fuel economy. A particularly high-performance thermal management system in the engine contributes to the low fuel consumption, an average of 5.1 liters per 100 km (46.12 mpg).

The A1, Audi’s most compact model, unites all of the strengths of the brand – a progressive design, uncompromising quality and groundbreaking efficiency – in a car that is 3.95 metres(12.96 ft) long. The three-door compact model with the four rings is dynamic and highquality, emotion-packed and individual. Its powerful engine and the agile chassis make it the sportiest car in the segment. Launched in 2010, the A1 is so successful that Audi has twice raised its annual unit sales target. Body and interior The cutting-edge design with the continuous shoulder line integrates the Audi A1 into the large model family. The front end with its dominating single-frame grille, the side line with the distinctive roof arch, the coupé-like C-pillars and the large wheel arches are among its defining style elements. The hood and the rear hatch wrap around the body. Audi offers optional xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and LED tail lights. The tail lights are already three-dimensionally styled in the base model and are unmistakable, day or night. The interior of the Audi A1 is spacious, bright and airy. The instrument panel bears hints of an airplane wing with its four round air vents reminiscent of jet engines. The clean, clear controls are every bit a classic Audi strength as is the superior workmanship. Many carefully designed details underscore the premium character of the A1. Drivetrain and Engine The Audi A1 uses TFSI (Turbo Fuel Stratified Injection) technology which follows the downsizing principle – the engines substitute forced induction for displacement and draw their fuel through direct injection units. A supercharger and a turbocharger work together to provide the boost in the 1.4-liter engine delivering 122hp. 68

At Audi, efficiency always means high-tech. The seven-speed S-tronic comes standard. This dual-clutch transmission shifts extremely quickly, comfortably and with no perceptible interruption to the flow of power. It can be operated as an automatic or manually, with paddles on the steering wheel available as an option. Thanks to its high efficiency and the intelligent control system, the S tronic also helps to reduce fuel consumption. Chassis The agile, wide-track suspension puts the Audi A1, 1.4 TFSI at the top of its class with respect to occupant protection. Whether in the city, on an interurban road or on the highway – the small compact is always great fun to drive thanks to its sporty setup, the favorable weight distribution and the direct-ratio steering. This model sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 8.9 seconds. Equipment In addition to the Attraction and Ambition trim lines, Audi also offers packages focused on infotainment and interior design. Innovative materials and modern colors emphasize the youthful character of the Audi A1. Whether decal sets for the exterior, color-coordinated air vents, LED interior lights or seat covers in expressive colors – customization is the key. The equipment program offers countless opportunities for matching the A1 to the driver’s own personal style, including four paint finishes from which to choose for the roof arch. The 465 watt Bose surround sound system with 14 speakers is just one example of the additional high-end features available. Convenient Bluetooth and wired interfaces are available for cellular phones and external players such as the iPod. The new Audi A1 is available in Jamaica at ATL Automotive with centres in Kingston at 3 Oxford Road and Bogue City Centre, Montego Bay.

or “Off-Road” conditions, giving the Touareg the ability to conquer any terrain. An SUV for everyday driving—more space, more innovations—Volkswagen has not only made the new Touareg lighter, but more fuel efficient, and an agile performer. It has also made it into an even more versatile, all-round vehicle. The new interior was made more functional, the seats more comfortable and the leg room in the rear - larger. The Touareg is a combination of innovative features like the “Dynamic Light Assist” that illuminates the pathway making it possible to drive with the main-beam headlights switched on permanently without dazzling oncoming traffic. A combination of Xenon headlights with the unique Volkswagen LED wrap and separate daytime running lights give the Touareg extraordinary presence.

The new 2012 Touareg boasts a 3.6 Litre V6 FSI (Fuel Stratified Injection) petrol engine, delivers 280 HP and 265 lbs/ft of torque while giving an average of 26 miles to the gallon. New Touareg takes the SUV idea into the future The Touareg is one of the most technically innovative vehicles that Volkswagen has made since the brand has been in existence. It is a superior SUV, defined by distinctive off-road capabilities, sublime comfort and power along with groundbreaking efficiency. The Touareg continues to fascinate with a recent re-styling and a reinterpretation of the idea of a multipurpose SUV. The stance is now a contemporary one thanks to a range of engines that are nearly 20 percent more fuel efficient and a plethora of new assistance and safety systems. New era SUV – lighter, more aerodynamic, more fuel efficient. 208 Kilograms lighter and 20% more fuel efficient! Volkswagen took a systematic approach in developing the new Touareg, patterned from the global success of the smaller Tiguan. The weight of the Touareg has been lightened, yet the new body has five percent more rigidity. Aerodynamic refinements position the Touareg slightly lower to the ground with a smaller frontal area than the previous model. All engines now offer a standard 8-speed automatic transmission – a first in this market segment – along with significant fuel economy advantages. As with the previous generation, the new Touareg has a rotary switch that the driver uses to adapt the car to specific “On-Road”

oceanstylemagazine.com

To complement these technologically advanced features the Touareg comes standard with dynamic handling control systems “Antilock Braking System” and “Electronic Stabilization Program” which assist the driver in critical situations. ABS keeps the vehicle steerable when braking hard and enables the driver to steer around an obstacle, helping to avoid a collision. ESP further assists the driver in extreme situations by attempting to prevent skidding of the vehicle. This is accomplished through a controlled application of the brake system and intervention in the engine management. You can revel in pure pleasure in the new Touareg with equipment such as deluxe seats with pneumatically adjustable backrests and the optional panoramic power-sliding sunroof which gives every passenger a remarkable view of the heavens; and should the heavens decide to open, the rain sensor with automatic speed control gives clear visibility by controlling and determining the speed of the wiper blades. Touareg – the best of two worlds About 500,000 car drivers chose to buy the first generation of this SUV. It is a luxury sport utility vehicle that offers a high level of comfort, sporty driving properties, avant-garde styling, excellent quality and unlimited expedition capabilities – essentially the best of the passenger car and off-road worlds unified in one concept. This is now being followed up by the new Touareg – a high-end and versatile all-round vehicle that brings these two worlds together even more perfectly. This stylish and luxurious vehicle is available in three trim levels at ATL Automotive the authorized distributor of Volkswagen in Jamaica at Oxford Road, Kingston and Bogue City Centre, Montego Bay.

Getting Down to Business. The cool, calm demeanor of Christian Mouttet belies a shrewd and astute business executive who’s already amassed a lifetime’s worth of experience and success. He shares some of his insights running his family’s privately held holding company where he oversees a network of enterprises from his base in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Though sparing in his public utterances, the 43 year old businessman nonetheless speaks frankly with Bruce Boretsky in this interview excerpt from Executive Lounge. What motivates you? I would say that innovation and change in my business life motivates me the most. I like the opportunity to bring about change in a business whether it is in a product, the way we do things or the systems we use. I want to do new things that have never been done before in a particular business or industry. I think that this is a lot of what our business has been built on over the years whether it’s been in products or systems and we would consider ourselves innovative in many ways.

These leaders, whether in politics or business, forgot what to do or why they were there. They lost sight of what was important in order to pursue their own selfish purposes and went down a path that compromised their own integrity.

If you could name one thing, what would you tell others to invest in and why? It’s difficult to pick one thing or one industry. Sometimes you have wonderful businesses that are in terrible industries, and at other times you have terrible businesses in what could be very good industries. So, if someone asks me what I would recommend they invest in, I would say that there are certain fundamentals that you should look for in investing in any business. Some of the basic things are to look for businesses that have strong franchises, a strong market position and high barriers to entry. What person has influenced you most in your life? I would definitely say my father. Certainly in my business life, and to an extent, in my personal life his influence has had a significant impact. In my personal life I have a love of reading, a love of travel and history, and I think those are things that I have in common with him and other members of my family as well. Other things I have in common with him are an appreciation for good food and a good wine. He’s had a huge influence on the values that I think are important and try to adhere to in my business and in my personal life. I learned about the importance of honoring your commitments from himespecially when it is difficult to do.

driving style What is your favorite automobile? Bentley Continental GT Is that what you drive? Yes I do. I have to admit it is my one indulgence.

What do you do for relaxation? Read and travel.

Are you a collector of any sort? Books. I do collect wine as well. But definitely books. I’ve collected a few first editions of books that I’ve really enjoyed. What time do you start work and what time do you end? I don’t get to my office much before 9:30 or 10:00 am and I’m usually in the office until 6:30 or 7 pm. I may do some things before I come in to the office in the morning. I tend to stay up quite late reading and sending out emails, that sort of thing. What trait do you most deplore in a powerful or influential person? Lack of integrity. I’ve seen, just in the country that I live in – in the area of politics and business – what lack of integrity has done to our country and to businesses. These leaders whether in politics or business forgot what to do or why they were there. They lost sight of what was important in order to pursue their own selfish purposes and went down a path that compromised their own integrity. Please finish this sentence. A great leader is . . . Someone who is steadfast in his or her convictions and can motivate people and get them moving in the same direction. Someone who can remain focused and who doesn’t compromise their integrity for the sake of expediency. I think those are all traits that would make a great leader.

body and soul Play Therapy: Budapest

The Wonders of

Budapest By Karen Holly Berliner

Play Therapy Play- Pla : A leisure activity that is undertaken purely for enjoyment or muse and has no other objective. Therapy -ther- -pe: Treatment of mind, body and soul by some rehabilitating or curative process. Do the math‌.

THE HEALING PROPERTIES OF ADULTS AT PLAY Play, joy and spontaneity are deeply rooted in all of our hearts and souls. Infants driven by primal curiosity, playfully explore the universe around them which in turn helps to shape their inner core and psyche. Adults are no different at all. For us, play continues to be an important means in which to enrich us. Intimacy. Inner peace. Mind/body integration. Play results in all of those many things being the quintessential holistic experience. Endorphins are released as play gently coaxes us into a state of well-being and calm; silliness and joy. The Danube River is the Black Sea’s main tributary, itself connected to the Atlantic Ocean via the Mediterranean and the Strait of Gibraltar. The vibrant city of Budapest sits right on the Danube. The hilly west bank is Buda, the flat east bank is Pest and together they form this modern day city. The notorious public buildings, the foliage covered hills of Buda, the wide avenues intersected by tiny cobblestoned side streets, the colorful shopping hubs of Pest and the connecting bridges over the banks of the Danube all make for one of the most enjoyable destinations in Europe.

LENNY KRAVITZ ON HIS MOST RECENT ALBUM, FINDING HIS SOUL MATE AND RECORDING IN THE BAHAMAS.

by

Marcel Anders (TIP)

In this interview, conducted at the fancy Malibu Inn, CA, the 47- year-old rockstar talks about his album “Black And White America”, his new deal with Roadrunner Records and his movie ambitions. Q: When we talked in 2009 you mentioned an album that you’ve been working on since 1997 and that you were almost done with. Is this it? Is this the legendary “Funk” album but under a different name? A: No! I screwed you again. No, this is “Black And White America”. I ended up going into the studio thinking that I was going to be finishing something else ´cause that, truly, was my my intention. But I just booked the studio in the Bahamas, incredible dream studio in the most beautiful location - isolated, very few people, small town. I was finishing that thing, but at the same time I started hearing all this new music, So I said: ‘OK, let me go record…I’m supposed to be finishing this, but let me go record one of these things I’m hearing in my head.’ And this is the album, “Black And White America” that came out fresh and wonderful and really very satisfying to me. Q: Is this going to be a double album? A: Well, you know, I still think in terms of vinyl. Every time I made a CD I think of side 1 and side 2, how much space between the songs, the whole thing. I was like: ‘You know, it’s time for a double record; I need the space in which to paint this picture.’ So, it’s 16 tracks, which obviously would be 4 tracks per side, 2 pieces of vinyl, and we’re making a beautiful gatefold vinyl version. That’s really important to me, even though there are three people that have record players. Actually that’s not true, a lot of kids [have] record players now and digging the whole vinyl thing. It fits nicely on one CD, but I do view this as a double album. Q: How does this fit into your body of work? Is this like a show of strength, representing your full spectrum? A: I like that. You hear what the man said? But that’s what it is...and that’s why I thought I needed the space. It couldn’t be done in 10 songs. It needed to be a larger canvas so I could really go into all the areas that I ended up going in; to show the full spectrum. And it really represents my musical tastes. Q: Including some electronics? Like there´s a hint of Romeo Blue in there, too? A: You know he has to get out sometime. He never got a record deal, so… (laughs) Q: Same goes for the lyrics. There’s some really aggressive stuff in there like “Come On, Get It”, which is about sex I assume. A: Right.

oceanstylemagazine.com

Q: Then there’s “Superlove” which is you being on a quest for the ultimate love… A: Yes - mentally, spiritually, sexually! Q: And then you’re totally trashed in “I Can’t Be Without You”, so the album as a whole is like an emotional rollercoaster - the ups and downs that we all go through? Is Lenny one of us? A: Always, always! Q: And he has a weak side, too? A: Of course, of course. It’s just life, and it’s a rollercoaster. And I enjoy the ride, the ups and the downs. If you can learn from the so called downs then, you know, great. Q: Though, like me, you haven’t found your soul mate yet? A: Well, you haven’t found it yet? Q: No, but you’re 5 years ahead of me. A: You know what? We attract it, we have to be ready for it and really want it. Sometimes we say we want it, and think we want it, but maybe we’re not ready. Are you ready? Q: No! A: You’re not ready. He’s not ready ladies and gentlemen. Q: That´s what comes with the lifestyle. If you’re never home, but always travelling… A: Well that part makes it difficult, no doubt. You don’t get to nurture something [as] if you work at the post office and your wife works as the nurse or at the school or she’s a real estate agent or whatever, and you come home every day and you can actually court properly. You meet somebody and you court and then it’s: “Well, gotta go!” (laughs). You know, but it can still happen. Look at all the people that travel like we do and they’ve got families and, you know, it’s all good. I have faith in you brother! Next time I see you, you’re going to tell me: “Man, it happened!” Q: I’ll take your word. But how does “Rock Star City Life” fit in there about some glamorous older woman? Who are you referring to? A: Ah, well not older. I mean…she’s young actually. Cause it says: “she’s underage, a real Lolita” [in] one of the lines. But…oh, cause

the first line says: “walks like man, you’d think she’s older.” You’d think she’s older, yeah. And actually that’s a song about…I was watching the movie about the Runaways. And I started listening to their music again. And it was really inspired by Cherie Curry, that song, by her character. Q: What do [you] find attractive in a woman? Who would make you go through such an emotional rollercoaster? A: [You] mean what kind of woman? Q: What are you looking for in a woman? What makes a woman attractive? What are you attracted to? A: Ah… strength! Strength, humor…no drama. I grew up around a lot of strong

women. I was raised by a lot of women; my mom, my aunts, my grandmother. There were a lot of women present. And humor is important. Beauty in and out.

run again, back on their feet. So it’s interesting, it works in this sort of worldly way. But, it’s, it’s really about a person that I was writing to.

Q: But “Stand” is like a call to arms, isn’t it? A: Yeah....it’s an uplifting song about no matter what life throws you, you get right back up and you keep moving. And you don’t give up hope, you persevere and so forth. The truth of the matter is: it was written personally to a friend who became paralyzed from the waist down. And I wasn’t in the country, and I felt like: “What can I do? I just want to give this person a feeling, what little can I do.” So I wrote this song for this person. And the person now is running again. Learned to walk again, learned to

Q: And what made you work with Jay-Z again – for the second time since “Baptism”? Are you longtime friends? A: Yeah, he’s a great artist and a very interesting human being. It wasn’t that I was trying to make a repeat, but when I was doing “Boongie Drop” I kept hearing his voice. And so I called him and he hooked it up. And then you also have the local DJ from, from my area in the Bahamas, DJ Military, on the track. I like that track a lot - quite different.

oceanstylemagazine.com

Q: And how serious are you taking acting in movies? A: Well, I’m doing a film called “Hunger Games”, which is going to be really fantastic. Big film. Q: A sci-fi film? A: Yes. Q: Like “Gladiator” goes sci-fi? A: Well, it’s about these groups of kids that live in these districts and they get picked, like in a lottery, to go to these “Hunger Games” - to this place like an arena. But it’s like a world, and the objective is to be the last one standing.

Q: It’s almost like a Gorillaz track – it´s got a strong reggae vibe to it, and some electronics, too, so it really stands out. A: And boongie in the Bahamas by the way means ass. So it’s about how these women dance. It’s about the whole vibe of the culture of these women - the dancing, the whole Bahamian thing - just so you know. Q: So the Bahamas to record? What does Gregory Town Sounds look like? A: It’s a beautiful studio. It’s a beautiful concrete structure, very modern, in the middle of the jungle, and then inside is beautiful wood. It looks almost like something you’d expect, like a studio you would find, in the mid to late 70s that was just preserved. Classic wood strips and beautiful wood floors. And cork and ah… it’s great, it’s great, and it´s just the most amazing equipment for my taste. Q: Lots of old vintage stuff? A: Yes, yes. In abundance, yes sir. Q: So you got a good vibe down there? A: Yeah, and it’s just the best place to work. Q: You love those remote places, don´t you? A: I do Q: If we talk about guitars: What are you playing on this one – what are you using when it comes

oceanstylemagazine.com

to amps, guitars, and effects? A: Ah… I have my studio guitars that don’t leave the studio. I have a Les Paul Standard, I’ve got a couple of Strats. I have an SG, I have my Everly Brothers Acoustics and my amp collection: Marshalls, Fenders, you know, Black Face, Silver Face Tweeds, Parks, Vox. Little amps like little Gibson amps, you know, little amps like this big. They are very eclectic and make interesting sounds. And my 2 or 3 basses, my Fender Jazz, my Fender P., different bass heads, acoustic, 360 acoustics Fenders. My drums: a mix of Ludwig, mostly Ludwig and some Gretsch pieces. And then my keyboards: my piano, my Steinway, my Hammond B3, my Clavinet [and] my synth collection, which is growing, and is [full of] incredible, great synthesizers from the 70s. Q: Is that what you’re collecting right now? A: Yeah, yeah. You hear a bit of synthesizers on this album which was fun because that’s not a normal thing that I have a lot of, but I felt it on this record. Q: So you basically got everything at your disposal? A: Right there in the jungle! Q: All in the Bahamas, in that studio? A: Yes sir.

Q: What’s your part in there? A: The character´s name is Cinna. He’s the stylist of the lead girl, who’s the lead character, whose name is Katniss Evergreen [played by Jennifer Lawrence]. Basically what that means when you say “stylist”: each kid that enters this “Hunger Game” has a stylist that puts them in all these getups and costumes, and presents them ´cause they have all these ceremonies before they actually go to the games. And it’s the person that builds up their image. It’s an interesting role. It’s like the guy behind her. Q: Like in wrestling where they create these characters? A: Well, they’re not like that. Q: But they create characters for competition? A: Yes. Because… the people that are watching these games they’re watching everything that is happening. And the people don’t have a lot of money. It’s a time when money and food is difficult, and the people actually put money together to buy...like say, you get hurt and you need something. So, the more character you have and the more image and the style and how you act in the whole thing, has something to do with it as well. Q: How does Lenny Kravitz stay in shape? A: I eat this stuff you just saw me eating here. Eating a lot of vegetables and healthy stuff, and fruits, and keeping it very organic. Q: Lots of sports as well? A: Oh yeah, I’ve been running on the beach here, which is great. Oh look at that man, the sun’s coming out - it’s getting blue, nice.
