notes from our readers
The Sexy and Talented Lenny Kravitz I was majorly excited to see Lenny Kravitz hanging out in the pages of your magazine in all his Bohemian splendor. I think he is one of the sexiest, most talented rock musicians out there and he’s not over-exposed the way some celebrities are, so getting my hands on this interview was a rare treat. He seems like he’s very easy-going and just loves to enjoy life and honing his craft. I would love to kick it with him on the glorious beaches of the Bahamas one day. Now THAT would be a dream come true… J. Singh
I Simply Love Liz Hurley!!
The Best of List…
What a gorgeous cover photo of Elizabeth Hurley! There’s something about her that I’ve always liked ever since she came on the scene with Hugh Grant in that infamous Versace “safety pin” dress. I guess she’s never come across as just a pretty face (even though she is stunning). She appears to be very down-to-earth and likeable in this article, not at all superficial. She’s had a few bumps along the road in her personal life, but it’s wonderful to see that she is balancing single motherhood and being a business woman very nicely. She’s definitely representing for all the sexy, beautiful women out there who know that 40 is the new 30! Lindsay Scott
Thank you for this great Best of List. After reading your best weekend getaway suggestion, I’m looking forward to starting a tour of the Caribbean—my goal being to visit all the islands at some point—and I’m planning to kick off my travels in Puerto Rico with a couple of nights in the US Virgin Islands, as well as a visit to Vieques or Culebra while I’m there. I figured that I might as well start off with a bang. Luckily, I won’t need a passport for this trip, but you’ve inspired me to bump that up on my to-do list. I’m looking forward to your next “Best of” edition. S. Garrett

She sat down with Ocean Style Magazine to discuss her secrets for fitting it all in: balance and harmony. It’s All in the Family Entrepreneurial drive is in Myers-Matalon’s genes. In 1975, Tina’s father Anthony Myers fell ill and lost his pilot’s license. But instead of mourning the loss of his first career, Myers seized an opportunity to become a KFC franchisee. Restaurants of Jamaica was born. After his passing in 1991, Anthony’s wife Lorna, who had helped build the company from the ground up, took over as CEO. Myers-Matalon says that the respect she holds for both her parents’ accomplishments and work ethic has been her “foundation through everything.” After finishing school, Myers-Matalon dabbled in the sales, marketing, and tour-

ism businesses in both Florida and the Bahamas. It quickly became clear that marketing was her calling, and to solidify her skills, she pursued professional development programs at Cornell University and opportunities with marketing partners in the Northeast, which helped her grow her career. When Restaurants of Jamaica was looking for a Marketing Director, Myers-Matalon didn’t hesitate. “I couldn’t resist coming back home to do what I loved, even though taking over marketing for one of Jamaica’s largest companies was intimidating,” she remembers. And the position didn’t come without an edge: “Living up to expectations as the youngest in a family of successful business people was scary to say the least, but I never give up a good challenge!” Myers-Matalon continued to push herself, joining the KLE investment group, which specializes in upscale nightlife in Jamaica, with her husband. The group found immediate success, she remembers, when it opened Jamaica’s first upscale night spot, Fiction Lounge. That project led to the development of Usain Bolt’s Tracks & Records sports lounge and casual dining establishment and to subsequent expansion with the recent opening of Famous Nightclub in Portmore and OCEAN Style

additional Tracks & Records’ to open in the near future. I am very proud of these ventures and for being a part of a team that has built very strong and successful Jamaican brands with huge potential for global expansion.” Myers-Matalon credits her successful partnership with her husband for their entrepreneurial gains; though they oversee different areas of KLE group, she says of her husband, “He keeps me focused and organized. He is very project management oriented, so he keeps the free-flowing marketing mind in check!” When asked about her future plans for both ROJ and KLE, Myers-Matalon let on only that there is “a lot to come from both ROJ and KLE, hopefully with my help and involvement in both!” Home Life Business makes up only half of Myers-Matalon’s daily concerns. Caring for her children, Sydney (8) and Jacob (6), comes before all else. “My life is my family,” Myers-Matalon says, proudly. “I try to prioritize, not get stressed, plan ahead, and focus. My husband and I have found a rhythm where even our social life and travel fits in.” Cultivating her passions—style and travel—is a must for Myers-Matalon. She calls her mother and other female family members her personal style inspiration. “They not only know what to wear, but how to wear it,” she says. When it comes to big names, Myers-Matalon turns to Diane Von Furstenburg for clothing for all occasions, and loves Gucci and Jimmy Choo shoes and handbags. She notes that bags are how she incorporates style into her everyday life, and how she keeps it all together during a busy day. Lip gloss, sunglasses, car keys, phone and iPad are all housed in a chic purse that matches effortlessly with her daily outfit: a short sleeve branded button down, pants, and Tory Burch ballet flats. Travel is when Myers-Matalon’s casual and comfortable style comes out to play. When vacationing, she favors DVF swimsuit sets, Jimmy Choo jellies, comfortable dresses, rompers, and True Religion jean shorts. Whether enjoying the Bahamas, the family’s favorite place, or on an African safari, their favorite vacation to date, Myers-Matalon makes sure she’s relaxing in style. If Myers-Matalon’s life seems a whirlwind to you, you have the right idea. But she notes that today, her life is accessible to all women. Her advice? “Break through the stereotypes and stigmas of the ‘working woman’ or ‘housewife.’ I don’t think it’s an ‘either or’ situation anymore. If you put your mind to it, you can do it all with balance and harmony.”

waxing
WOES By Tuere Randall
Let’s face it. Getting a bikini wax is no one’s idea of fun, particularly if you suffer from bumps and ingrown hairs. As if it’s not enough that a total stranger gets to eyeball and then violently assault your lady bits with hot wax, bumps that result from hairs that have recoiled into the root under the skin are unsightly and, frankly, they can be a bit depressing. It’s enough to make anyone stick to shaving, which is not always the best personal grooming option when you’re sporting a teeny weeny bikini at the beach. If you are one of the many unfortunate souls out there who suffers from the effects of waxing long after you have climbed down off the table, you’re in luck! We have some tips that might help you make things go a little more “smoothly” the next time you opt for some personal landscaping.
Before the appointment… TAKE YOUR MEDS Taking ibuprofen a couple of hours or so before your appointment will help alleviate some of the pain you will experience.
During the appointment… SPEAK UP Sure, it is natural to discuss the work week and your phone conversation with your Aunt Primrose – anything to take your mind off of the fact that the nice salon lady has your legs contorted in a position you haven’t been in since you were an infant getting your diaper changed. What’s really important is that you tell her if the wax is too hot. Scalded nether regions are a sure way to set yourself up for an epic fail.
Immediately after the appointment… HANDLE WITH CARE Apply cortisone cream as soon as you can after the aesthetician finishes. Handle skin gently when bathing. Do not use coarse washcloths or anything too abrasive. Delicate skin is most sensitive at this time. The first 48-72 hours are crucial.
oceanstylemagazine.com
Until the next appointment... BE DILIGENT Now that your skin has calmed down, keeping bumps at bay will require a daily plan of action. Exfoliation is key. Use a scrub such as St. Ives Apricot Scrub on your bikini area every day. You can also get away with using a nubby washcloth, just make sure that you don’t choose anything too harsh that causes irritation or microscopic tears to the skin that can result in infection. Follow this up with a product that is specially formulated for ingrown hairs such as Tend Skin, or use peel pads such as Bliss’s that chemically breaks down the surface layer of skin. By constantly removing the outermost layer of skin, it makes it easier for new hair to find its way through to the surface, rather than curling back into the hair follicle. Whatever you choose, be sure to do it every day. DON’T BE PICKY Just like when dealing with acne, resist the urge to pick at any ingrown hairs that might pop up. It’s tempting to want to take a needle and try to free the hair yourself, but this might lead to scarring and infection, which is precisely what you don’t want to do. In case your busy little hands get the best of you, be sure to use tea tree oil to help heal ruptured skin and prevent bacteria from making matters worse. Once skin has healed, a retinol based cream can help with any discoloration from hyperpigmentation, just be careful about using it if you are also using chemical peel pads. WAX REGULARLY It’s true what they say – waxing does get easier over time. Make sure that you don’t go more than 6-8 weeks before getting another wax. Do yourself a favor and make your appointment for your next visit before you leave the salon.

MY BEAUTY SECRETS Tata Harper Daily morning beauty regimen? My morning beauty routine includes every product in my line, to completely cleanse, moisturize and protect my skin for the day. I use my Regenerating Cleanser, which exfoliates and cleanses with natural enzymes and essential oils - it’s amazing because it doesn’t dry out your skin since it has no soaps or alcohols. Then I cocktail together my Hydrating Floral Essence, a toner that’s rich in Hyaluronic Acid, and my Rejuvenating Serum for a complete anti-aging treatment, followed by my Repairative Moisturizer, which is super hydrating for dry skin. The Replenishing Nutrient Complex is my last step, for environmental and antioxidant protection. I’m also really into fresh juices and have one every morning for a boost of nutrients and energy. It’s either a berry blend with lots of vitamins and antioxidants, or a hydrating blend with coconut water, mangoes and cucumber. What are your sun care secrets? The number one trick is to protect your skin from the sun. The sun literally destroys our skin’s health; it causes spots, wrinkles and premature aging. Of course, completely avoiding the sun is impossible, but using antioxidant-rich skin protection and healthy SPF every day is key. Biggest influence on your beauty regimen? My Latin roots, especially my grandmother, who taught me to love my daily beauty rituals. Latina women are indoctrinated as young girls into the culture of beauty, and we learn to take care of our skin, our health and bodies from day one. In Colombia, where I come from, beauty is not a luxury or a chore, it’s a priority and a way of life, and the women in my family taught me that from the beginning.

What differentiates your line of beauty and skincare products from others? There are lots of things that set my line apart - for one, it’s completely, 100% natural and nontoxic. There are not many other brands, if any, that are as results-oriented and as committed to delivering real anti-aging results as we are, that can say they don’t use a single chemical ingredient. Also, my products are all made by hand, fresh on my farm every month. We grow a lot of our own ingredients on our Organic land, because I believe in sourcing things locally when possible and on high quality control. We own every aspect of product production - this is really rare in the beauty industry. Most companies outsource the majority of the labor that goes into creating products, including even buying premade bases. We never do this - everything happens in our Vermont headquarters. It’s a really unique system. What would be one tropical or exotic ingredient that you would love to work with, if only it could be locally harvested? oceanstylemagazine.com

SANDALS
Gets Spicy!
By Nina Jankowicz
Big plans as it plants it’s first “luxury all-inclusive” flag in Grenada.
N
estled in the Caribbean peninsula lies the tiny and magical island of Grenada. “The Spice Isle,” as it is nicknamed, has a vibrant tourist economy and leads in the worldwide production and export of nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon. With the opening of Sandals LaSource Grenada Resort and Spa, the fourteenth resort in the Sandals company’s portfolio, tourism on the island is about to get even spicier beginning in December 2013. Sandals purchased the former LaSource property for $19 million in 2012 with the stated intent of making it a landmark of regional luxury. “Grenada will be something the world has never seen in Caribbean tourism,” said Sandals CEO Adam Stewart. “It will blow your mind. We think we’re a game changer in the Caribbean.” The company is sparing little expense in pursuing its objective, with an investment in upgrades exceeding US$100 million. The 17acre, 231 room resort, located on Pink Gin Beach near Grenada’s southern tip, will be divided into three villages--Italian, South Seas, and Pink Gin, each with different micro-cultures and amenities, and available at different price points. The Italian Village sits on a cliff overlooking the beach, and features 48 suites, some of which include butler pantries, infinity edge balcony pools, and split-level, townhousestyle living. Nearby, two exclusive lazy riv34

ers wind around the property for all-day lounging and soaking. The South Seas Village overlooks the resort on its mountainside and features Sandals’ signature Rondoval suites, as well as “millionaire” suites, the highest room category, outfitted with private entrances, 65 inch plasma televisions, plunge pools, and indoor/outdoor showers. Guests of the South Seas Village will be able to take advantage of the resort’s coveted, thatched-roof swim-up bar. The Pink Gin Village offers 70 luxury oceanfront rooms with custom-built contemporary furniture and gorgeous Turkish tile floors, plus 30 luxurious junior suites. Guests can relax at the nearby multi-purpose “Living Room,” an open-air gathering spot outfitted with a bar and piano, as well as billiard and Ping-Pong tables. And of course, the resort’s gorgeous stretch of white sand beach is never more than a few steps away. No matter which village guests choose for their stay, Sandals LaSource Grenada commits to keeping luxury-lovers well fed and entertained. With nine restaurants planned for the new property, they endeavor to please every palate and “take guests on a gastronomic expedition around the world” right there on the resort. Possible stops on the “gastronomic expedition” include: Soy, a sushi bar; Spices, specializing in Caribbean cuisine; Le’Jardinier, a French eatery; Neptune’s, a Mediterranean beach bar,
Kimono’s, a Japanese Teppanyaki restaurant; Cafe de Paris, a French-style cafe; Cucina Romana, delighting guests with authentic Italian cuisine; and Dino’s Pizzeria, for a low-key dinner or lunch. The property will also feature Sandals’ first steakhouse, Butch’s Chophouse, named after Sandals founder and Chairman, Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart. Butch’s promises to bring the decadence of a New York steakhouse to the all-inclusive Sandals resort. Look out Peter Luger! In addition to the Italian Village’s lazy rivers, the resort will include three swimming pools, and of course, acres of gorgeous Caribbean coastline. Themed cocktail parties, beach bonfires, and live piano performances will adorn the schedule each night. Many of the packages offered by the resort include a couples massage at the state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor fitness center and spa, while couples can let loose in the evenings at their choice of four luxury lounges. Vacationers can also enjoy Grenada’s natural beauty while strolling around the resort’s waterfalls and reflective pools. And those traveling to Grenada for business will delight in the expansive and technologically sophisticated meeting rooms. The new property doesn’t merely offer vacationers the opportunity to enjoy the idyllic “Spice Island” in the lap of luxury. Many hope it will also spur an economic upturn for the island. Grenada’s tourism industry experienced failing returns and shrinking occupancy levels oceanstylemagazine.com
THE SPICE ISLAND Once treasured for its exotic spices, Grenada’s “Island of Spice” nickname was quite literal. Today, Grenada is known for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and a culture full of food, music and a more metaphorical ‘spice.’ Depending on your interests, there are a wide variety of experiences to be had on the island. For all you foodies, we suggest taking a trip to the Market Square, where you will find seemingly endless spices and fresh produce. Or, why not take it a step further with a cooking class at BB’s Crabback Restaurant? Their team will teach you how to utilize local produce, and not only will you be able to eat a great meal, you will learn skills that you can continue to use in the kitchen. in 2012, due both to dwindling airlift capacity as well as the ongoing effects of the global economic crisis. However, the entry of the Sandals brand to the island has encouraged Grenada’s Hotel and Tourism Association to aggressively pursue more flights, and with the resort’s expanded capacity, the promise of more jobs to Grenadians. Critics of Sandals’ arrival on the island are not so certain about the resort’s potential impact on Grenada’s economy, due to the all-inclusive nature of the resort. They worry that resort patrons will hardly venture off the property to patronize local craftsmen, spice markets, and restaurants, and due to tax breaks included in oceanstylemagazine.com
Sandals’ deal with the Grenadian Government, that the country will lose out on millions of dollars in tax revenue. Nonetheless, vacationers from all over the world have already begun to book their next Caribbean holiday at Sandals LaSource. The resort’s amenities and accommodations are outstanding, well-suited we daresay to the natural beauty of Grenada. Hopefully, travelers will also venture off property to ensure they have a full and well-rounded experience; basking in the comforts and amenities of world-class luxury and rich with the cultural experience that Grenada offers.
Those with an adventurous streak will love exploring the exquisite Grenadian waters. But we aren’t talking about your typical snorkeling outing. Experience something surreal and hauntingly beautiful when you swim through the world’s first underwater sculpture park. Created by acclaimed eco-sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, this permanent installation isn’t just for show. All of the pieces change with the water’s environment and promote biological growth. Book a tour through WWW.GRENADASEAFARIS.COM. To immerse yourself even further into Grenada’s culture, make sure to stop by the Spice Basket. Here you can enjoy everything from fierce dinner theatre performances and delicious rum tastings, to live local music and even a museum dedicated solely to West Indies cricket. With the extensive variety of cultural shows and activities offered here, we wouldn’t be surprised if you found yourself at the Spice Basket multiple times during your visit. Beaches, Key West Luxury Village Turks & Caicos Topping the lists annually of best family all-inclusive resorts, Beaches offers a wide array of amenities that will keep even the tiniest member of your entourage entertained. Truly a “somethingfor-everyone” kind of place, Beaches further spreads its wings over beautiful Grace Bay in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos with the addition of the Key West Luxury Village. Building on the existing Beaches model, its laid back vibe, Key West style, distinguishes it from the earlier villages while still delivering the same award-winning service and amenities that have made Beaches the brand to beat for travel, family-style. Beaches Turks & Caicos features an XBOX® Play Lounge, the Scratch DJ Academy, exclusive Kids Camps, a teen nightclub, and the Caribbean Adventure with Sesame Street®. Key West Luxury Village joins the existing Caribbean, French and Italian themed villages, adding three additional restaurants to the resort, for a total of 19. Restaurant Marin has the only second-level lounge overlooking the majestic cerulean waters of Grace Bay. Grill Bleu offers gourmet confections from its Tandoori oven (thought to be the only restaurant in Turks & Caicos offering genuine Tandoori cuisine). At night, fire pits add to the ambiance. Nestled between the sparkling blue sea and the lush green forest, the Ritz-Carlton Dorado Beach is located on 1,400 sprawling acres of the former estate of Laurance Rockefeller. How’s that for chic digs? Golfing enthusiasts will love the Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course, and families with children will love the $12 Million Dollar aquatic fantasyland “The Watermill.” Spa enthusiasts will delight in Spa Botanico’s purification gardens with tropical pools, steam rooms and outdoor vichy scrubs, glass-walled spa treatment pavilions, and organic spa products made from on-site grown native flora. Every guest room, residence and restaurant is situated just a few steps from the water’s edge. What We Love: The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Dorado Beach’s white-hot culinary collaboration with epicurean mastermind José Andrés, recipient of the 2011 James Beard Outstanding Chef Award, ensures that the food will be every bit as spectacular as the magical scenery of Dorado Beach. Explore the gardens and fragrant fruit trees that are ripe with treasures beckoning to be picked (there are actually signs hanging from trees when the fruit is at its peak that encourage you to do so!). Feast your eyes on dramatic sunsets and panoramic seascapes, as well as views of neighboring St. Barth, St. Eustatius, Saba and St. Maarten, which can be seen from every property at the resort, but especially so from the terraces of the Refinery Restaurant which overlooks all of Kittitian Hill. The Refinery, an old sugar-refining mill, promises delectable dishes bursting with flavor, made from locally and sustainably grown, caught or raised ingredients. Play a round of golf on the impressive Ian Woosnam designed 18-hole championship golf course that graces the property, venture out into the community to visit the Saturday Farmers Market, or take a drink of rum with the locals. Kittitian Hill is all about becoming one with the environment, and that includes the lovely people of St. Kitts. What We Love: The idea of fresh food from Kittitian Hill’s own Belle Mont Farm, and supporting a smaller-scale, locally owned and run establishment makes us feel good in a way that eludes us at some of the larger properties we have visited. Savile Row has still got it. Effortless elegance. Sublime fabric. Immaculate tailoring. No other location on the planet can truly duplicate the product. Imitate, yes, but duplicate? Not in the mortal world. It is not just about the tailoring. It is about style. A clutch of contemporary-minded shops have acknowledged, however sumptuous and handsome it may be, that life cannot be fully lived inside a bespoke suit. Some moments simply require a more casual approach by design. This bastion of male preening is such a lovely experience, it is begging to be shared. By that, we mean to invite the ladies in. Ergo, if you’re planning a bespoke fitting, make it a complete bespoke weekend. Book the jet, pack the bags, reserve a suite and schedule the tables. Then, open up to contemporary bespoke. Nick Hart was one of the first to recognize the importance of casual options. Earning his tailoring stripes at Chester Barrie, he opened his own Spencer Hart shop in 2003. The shop’s skills are legendary, with a precision edge that cuts through design without hesitation. From meticulous, oceanstylemagazine.com
formally-tailored garments, to flawless Palm Springs casual, a Spencer Hart experience proves second to none in keeping with current trends while living in the moment. Seen on everyone from P. Diddy to Benedict Cumberbatch, this stylish men’s couture is exclusively evident everywhere it matters. And ladies, this is one errand you will want to partake in, as the choices are finely tuned and deliciously presented. Kathryn Sargent spent 15 years learning the trade at Gieves & Hawkes, finally launching her own brand in 2012. She has already earned remarkable acclaim for her polished skills, creating garments for statesmen, Royals, and business leaders - both male and female. Much sought after for her impeccable garments, Kathryn’s real passion highlights individuality, designing and creating a garment that is uniquely reflective of each customer. Whatever your dream, Kathryn can stitch it up with perfect fit, especially if it includes one of the incredibly indulgent Scabal fabrics. The Treasure Box line from this historic fabric house weaves platinum, karat gold,
The real pacemaker in the field has to be Ozwald Boateng, one of the top designers in the running to design the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding gown, who has delighted and enchanted patrons with innovative yet classic designs. Known for his chiseled collars, Boateng also speaks volumes to men who befriend fear and embrace challenge but must look elegant throughout the process. You may assume all expectations of tailoring will be exceeded, as Boateng doesn’t rest on his laurels, but continues to excite and inspire. This house will not disappoint. Another accomplished bespoke tailor with a twist, and a must see, is Nick Tentis. Consistently injecting a wow factor into the stiff upper lip of Savile Row, Tentis creates works of art that slip on like a second skin, dispensing style that endures even the roughest of circumstance, as evidenced by endorsements on his site. Bespoke cobblers continue the theme of the weekend, with G.J. Cleaverley & Co for the gentlemen, and Silvia Campbell for the ladies, awaiting your arrival. While you are in the mood, why not add a pair of peerlessly-crafted hand made leather gloves from Chester Jeffries? Posh it up in the semi-secret Soho Hotel, or the Churchill Suite at the Wellesley Hotel, ringing the concierge for your perfect cocktails and nibbles. Or request the Wellesley Rolls Royce for transport to Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester or the Sommelier’s Table at The Connaught, for delectably prepared cuisine. Properly punctuate your exquisitely designed weekend with a collection of your favorite chocolates in a custom order at Charbonnel et Walker. Slide them into your bag and enjoy on the jet back. With Champagne, of course. Cheers! OCEAN Style

t’s not every world record holder that has the ability to effortlessly connect with his fans as if they were lifelong friends, letting them get a glimpse of his true colors and off-thetrack personality. But Asafa Powell does just that; it turns out the third fastest man in the world actually leads a fairly introspective lifestyle, embodying the spirit of his native Jamaica with his personal motto, “always laid back and chillaxing.”

The 30 year old Powell, standing over six feet tall and 190 pounds, is often referred to as a “gentle giant.” He is no stranger to the most famous tracks of the world, having competed at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, garnering a gold medal finish for his participation in Team Jamaica’s 4x100 meter relay in Beijing. He has won five gold medals at the IAAF World Athletics Championships, where he set a world record for the 100 meter sprint. Powell has a need for speed on the track, where he has completed 88 sub-10 second 100 meter races, more than any other person in history, as well as on the road. He loves to drive and work on high-end race cars and aspired to be a mechanic before taking up running. In truth, the majority of Powell’s life is more low-key than one would expect from a three-time Olympian and former World Record holder. Powell was born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, in a large family that consisted of his parents, both pastors, and six brothers. The faith his parents bestowed on him governs his interactions to this day, allowing him to stay humble and down-to-earth in the face of immense media attention. While other athletes are prone to theatrics, Powell always seems calm and composed when under the world’s scrutiny. 44

asafa Powell’s faith gave him courage in life’s darkest moments. He lost one of his brothers, Michael, to a gunshot wound in 2002, and another, Vaughn, to natural causes a year later. Both tragedies struck just before Powell was to compete in national trials and championships, and he cites his faith as the solace and strength in the face of grief. His faith is still his motivation; while other athletes might listen to a pump-up song before a big race, Powell repeats the verse “I can do all things through Christ who gives me the strength” to himself before taking his place at the starting line. His favorite song, the gospel standard “Lord Walk Beside Me,” similarly reflects his spirituality. Powell, now 30, had to battle his share of injuries in the past few years and showed much maturity and foresight in deciding to compete more lightly this season. To fill his newfound free time, Powell volunteers with children’s sports clinics, which he refers to as “the best part of the job,” a stateoceanstylemagazine.com

BODY AND SOUL Summer Fitness
Gams. Stems. Legs. No matter what you call them, one thing is certain, a great pair is necessary for the fashionable shorts and mini-skirts that are so popular when the mercury is climbing. And in the Caribbean, where it’s always warm, a great pair of legs is almost a necessity. If you’re looking to get your gams into gear, here are three exercises that will help you tone and shape in all the right places.
SQUATS Any trainer will tell you that squats are high up on the list of exercises that firm your legs. And there is a reason why they are so popular – they work! Traditional squats are done with your feet straight forward about shoulder-width apart. As you look straight ahead and focus on something in front of you, slowly lower your bum towards the floor until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Keep your back straight and remember not to let your knees go past your toes (if you look down and can’t see your toes, you need to check your alignment). Then return to the starting position to complete one rep. Notes: Changing the position of your feet and distance between them activates different muscles groups. For example, if your do plié squats with your feet pointed outward at a 45 degree angle (think second position in ballet) you will also activate your inner thigh muscles.
WALKING LUNGES Squats and lunges are usually hated as much as they are effective. Lunges are great for those who have a muscular imbalance, as it places weight on the left or right side of the body. Lunges build balance and core strength and make your legs leaner and more defined.
SEXY SCULTPED
LEGS By Tuere Randall
Standing with your feet hip-width apart and pointed straight, take a step forward with your right foot (your left heel will probably lift off the ground a bit if your calf muscles are tight). With your right foot firmly planted in front of you, bend at the knee until your right thigh is parallel to the floor, making sure not to let your knee extend past your toes. Simultaneously, your left leg should also be bent as your knee drops towards the floor your heel lifted, as your left leg is anchored by the ball of your foot. If you’re a beginner, push off with the ball of your left foot as you straighten to a standing position, bringing your left foot next to your right foot. Then repeat the sequence, leading this time with your left foot forward and your right leg dropping towards the floor to complete one rep. Notes: For a more advanced variation, instead of bringing your left foot next to the right foot, step past your right foot. Plant your left foot firmly ahead of you, lowering your right leg towards the floor. Repeat, alternating sides for a minimum of 10 reps per leg.
CALF RAISES When most people think of great legs, the first image that comes to mind is usually shapely calf muscles. Working out the calves can be a painful affair because they tend to produce lactic acid build-up quickly (it’s what causes that “burning” feeling when we have fatigued certain muscles). Traditional calf raises are done on the floor and can be done with your feet facing forward or angled out 45 degrees and simply require standing on one’s toes and lowering to the floor. This works the plump gastrocnemius muscle at the back of the calf. However, if you want to hit the muscles at the front of the leg, stand on the edge of a step or stair with your feet facing forward and your heels hanging off the edge. Rise on to your tip toes. Then lower your heels slightly below the edge of the step. You will feel the entire range of motion in the muscle as you do this. Notes: Please hold on to something (bannister, wall, etc.) if you perform this exercise on a step or stair. Remember to breathe. Keep your stomach tight. If you’re a beginner, add weight gradually. If you’re trying to lose weight, make sure to do higher reps with lower weights. If you’re trying to build muscle, go with heavier weights, fewer reps, and take more time to rest between sets. Do this about 3-4 times a week along with your favorite cardio routine. You’ll have catwalk ready stems in no time!

ESCAPE Costa Rica

inety-three miles from the capital of San Jose, Costa Rica, heading in the direction of the country’s Northern Region, lies an eco-friendly property, considered by many to be one of the greenest hotels and resorts in the world. To get there one must take a long windy road that connects La Fortuna to Lake Arenal. Upon arrival, what becomes immediately obvious is the fact that this property, known today as “Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort” is located at the base of the active Arenal Volcano. The visual and structural image of Tabacón, created by Costa Rican born architect Jaime Mikowski, resembles that of a green Spanish Hacienda nestled on 872 acres of verdant rainforest, surrounded by flowers, botanical gardens, waterfalls and streams of hot springs. And the Arenal Volcano, which is central to the health spa concept of Tabacón, provides heat to the hot springs and waterfalls that run throughout the property. Also, all the water that is used on the property is certified as mineral spring water and comes directly from the Arenal Volcano. In fact, all wastewater from the hotel is treated in a hotel owned plant and is monitored by Costa Rica’s Ministry of Health.
Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort By Kwame Romaine
Tabacón has 114 guest rooms, with low-flow showers with reduced water consumption. Room types include Deluxe, Superior, Junior and Honeymoon Suites. Each room offers breathtaking views of the botanical gardens and rainforest. The hotel has two bars: the Arenal Pool Bar, which is a swim up bar, and the Cana Brava Bar, located in the check-in lobby adjacent the front desk. From the main lobby, hotel guests can also walk or shuttle to the facility, which features the hot springs, botanical gardens and pools (locker rooms are available for changing, and towels are provided after bathing in the pool and hot springs). Tabacón also boasts a couple of fine restaurants , Ave Del Paraiso and Los Tucanes Restaurant. Spa enthusiasts in search of one of the best spa treatments in the world can take advantage of Tabacón’s wet and dry treatments in an open-air bungalow or in the botanical gardens, and also the use of native ingredients such as volcanic mud and thermal waters. The Tabacón massage is also another signature treatment designed to push the limits of relaxation for hotel guests. In addition to being designated an eco-friendly five star hotel by The Leading Hotels of the World and The Leading Spas of the World, Tabacón has been granted Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST) by the Costa Rican Tourism board for its sustainable tourism programs and its protection of the environment. A few notable examples are: the use of technology to promote savings in energy and water resources; the use of organic and biodegradable products and protection of freshwater mineral springs from pollution. Tabacón is also a leader in Corporate Social Responsibility. According to the hotel, 77% of its employees are from La Fortuna. The hotel invests in the infrastructure initiatives of the town and region, and promotes regional cultural and artistic values.

POLO’S GAME CHANGER
NACHO
by Zawn Villines
FIGUERAS THE ARGENTINIAN SUPERSTAR, HIS FATHER, FAMILY AND HIS VISION TO EXPAND THE SPORT.
R
alph Lauren’s iconic brand has long represented the chic side of preppy, and his male models have left women swooning for generations. The brand’s latest addition is Argentinian polo superstar Ignacio Figueras, known to just about everyone as Nacho. Nacho first entered the sport at nine and catapulted to the top of the game by the time he was 20. He’s rapidly expanding his global reach into hearts and minds and was just named a Game Changer by Johnnie Walker Blue Label. He and his father, business partner, and dear friend, Horacio, recently caught up with OCEAN Style magazine in New York City. For many men, this generation represents the first in which they are expected to truly embrace the triumphs, tragedies, and endless work of fatherhood. But for the two Figueras men, the ‘work’ of fatherhood is old news and a family tradition. The elder Figueras was his son’s mentor long before the days of Ralph Lauren, polo, and Johnnie Walker Blue Label, and Nacho argues that his father deserves the lion’s share of credit for his success, emphasizing, “My father always taught me that nothing is impossible. He taught me to be very perseverant, to be tenacious in everything I do in life. One of the most important things in life is to believe that [you] can do anything, that nothing is impossible.” Nacho’s father was his guide into the competitive, even ruthless, world of polo. It was Horacio who first put Nacho on a horse, offering fatherly riding guidance and coaching him through his first steps into polo. Now 36 and a father himself, the younger Figueras is applying the lessons learned from his father to his own children. These lessons, he

explains, help him focus more closely on his career while never losing sight of the needs of his growing family. Figueras isn’t exaggerating when he says he’s been focused on his career. He became a professional polo player at the age of 17, playing on the White Birch team in New York. Widely regarded as one of the best players in the world, Figueras recently told CBS News that he has no intention of leaving the game for other pursuits. He now plays on BlackWatch, a team for which he is also co-owner. His highly successful Manhattan Polo Classic remains a favorite of polo devotees, with England’s Prince Harry participating in 2010. Figuera’s burgeoning polo career, not to mention his unmissable good looks, quickly drew the attention of designer Ralph Lauren. He signed his first modeling contract in 2000 and quickly catapulted to superstardom, becoming the face of Ralph Lauren Black Label in 2005. He is now the model for virtually all of the brand’s polo fragrances – an apropos trajectory for a man who began his career in the sport, but perhaps a surprising turn for a boy who grew up on a farm.
aristocrats, Nacho’s stunning good looks and farm boy charm have brought attention and increased awareness of the sport, attracting players from across the socioeconomic spectrum. Figueras knows that changing the face of polo begins at home, though. His son, Hilario Figueras, is a polo player who recently made his debut in the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, scoring three goals and capturing the attention of the crowd. Nacho, of course, couldn’t be prouder. He clearly intends to continue the tradition of Figueras men rising to the top of their game. He’s learned, though, that even superstars have setbacks. Nacho suffered a nasty fall in May at the Cowdray Park Polo Club in England, breaking his hip after the front leg of his horse
exerted its full weight on his body. The injury left him cheering on the sidelines instead of playing the game he loves. Whether adored for his good looks, admired for his immense talent or respected for his vision to make polo a more inclusive sport with wider participation, Nacho has already made a significant contribution and had a meaningful impact. He has managed to take his natural abilities, along with application and focus, together with his strong upbringing and blaze an impressive trail. With that track record and his very impressive objectives for the future, we eagerly anticipate what the future holds for this talented game changer.
While it might be modeling that has brought Nacho into the public consciousness, his true love remains polo. For him, polo isn’t just a stepping stone into superstardom. It’s his passion, and he intends to use his celebrity to draw other people into the game. Figueras takes his role as a game changer seriously and has dedicated himself to popularizing the sport of polo. Once thought of as a game for yuppies and oceanstylemagazine.com

HOURS IN ST. BARTHS By Darcy Mayfair
Friday
1pm: I land at Princess Juliana airport in St. Maarten. An expertly packed carry-on bag means that I quickly exit the terminal to find a taxi to Bobby’s Marina where I will catch the ferry. 1:45pm: A little traffic, but I’ve arrived. I hang out at The Greenhouse Restaurant where I eat my usual jerk chicken salad, drink a few mango mojitos and bust out my laptop so I can post on Facebook how much fun I’m having in the sunshine while people are freezing back at home. 5pm: We’re about to begin boarding. The ocean spray leaves me feeling invigorated, while a bit of choppiness leaves a couple of passengers feeling queasy. Luckily, despite numerous trips, I haven’t gotten sick yet. 6pm: Gustavia (St. Barth’s port) glistens in the distance as the street lights grow brighter against the impending nightfall. My heart quickens; I’m almost there. 6:15pm: I collect my luggage and go through customs, trying to say “Bon Soir” and “Merci” in my best French accent. The customs agent responds by bidding me goodbye in English (is my accent that bad?). My boyfriend picks me up and we head to our weekend digs at Tom Beach Hotel, roughly seven minutes away in St. Jean. 9pm: After a refreshing nap, we get ready for sushi and live music at the perennially popular Bêtes a Z’Ailes, also known as BAZ Bar. Located on the waterfront, it’s one of our favorite places on the island. The nighttime vibes are easy, and a soft breeze blows off the harbor. 11:30pm: We decide to call it quits after a wonderful evening and head back to the hotel.

Saturday
8am: Breakfast at the beachside hotel restaurant La Plage. 10am: We hit the supermarket to buy food for a picnic on the beach. 11am: We begin our mountainside hike to the glorious beach at Colombier, with its sugar white sand and clear blue water. Strangely empty, we take full advantage of the relative seclusion. After a few hours in the sun, we need a nap. 5:30pm: Up and off to Do Brasil at Shell Beach in Gustavia to have a few drinks and watch the sunset. 7pm: Next stop – La Santoise in Corrossol, home of the best cheeseburgers on the island (EXACTLY what I need to fuel up for a night out on the town). 10:30pm: We drive to Pointe Milou for drinks at Le ‘Ti St. Barth. Hoping to see the owner Carole Gruson, who is one of the coolest people ever, but she’s not there. 12:30am: A few hours later, we head over to Le Yacht Club. I try to dance myself into some version of sobriety (failing miserably, of course, because I don’t actually stop drinking). We get back to the hotel safely; I just can’t remember how.

ESCAPE 72 Hours in St. Barths
Sunday
10:45am: My boyfriend has gone to work; I wake up just in time to catch breakfast. I have a shot of wheatgrass juice to help energize me after a brutal night. It tastes like punishment. Then I fall asleep listening to the hum of the planes landing and departing from the airport nearby. Thank God for sunscreen. 12:30: After waking up, I wander in and out of the shops that line the main road in St. Jean, such as The Rock Shop at Eden Rock and Lili Belle. 1:30pm: On to Nikki Beach to have a couple of drinks and watch the Hamptons transplants who overrun the island during peak season. The picturesque strip of beach right in front beckons me to take a dip. I stop by the gift shop before leaving for a Nikki Beach t-shirt. Touristy, I know, but it seemed like the right thing to do. 3:30pm: I drive into Gustavia for more window shopping, avoiding Hermès and Cartier like the plague (no sense in torturing myself). I snag a Missoni bikini in Calypso St. Barth and then pop into Roberto Cavalli next door before heading to Human Steps to check out their latest collections of handbags and shoes. I’m tempted to raid a part of my savings for a bag, but the urge soon passes. 4:30pm: I down a few piña coladas at Le Select (Michel makes them the best). I avoid the “Town Driver,” a local favorite known for its mighty kick. My boyfriend meets me there and we return to the hotel. 8:30pm: We have dinner at Isola – my favorite restaurant in St. Barth. The Italian cuisine is AMAZING! It’s my last night, so we opt for an early evening to spend quality time together.
Monday
8am: Last breakfast on the beach before I leave. 10:30am : The boat is ready to depart; I’m not. He wants me to stay. We hug tightly. It will be another couple of months before I see him again. 11:15am: After watching all I love fade into the distance like a ghost, I arrive in beautiful St. Maarten. Even with its own unique charm, it will never bewitch my soul like the enchanting isle of St. Barthélemy. I feel a part of me is left behind. I race to the airport to catch a mid-afternoon flight back home.

9 DEBUNKED MYTHS ABOUT SCOTCH WHISKY....
Scotch Whiskey connoisseur and Johnnie Walker Global Brand Ambassador, Jonathan Driver, sat with OCEAN Style to refute some popular myths about the age old libation.
Johnnie Walker invented Scotch whisky. The first record of Scotch Whisky being made is by a priest in 1494. Johnnie Walker were one of the first great blending families; using blending to make great whisky, consistently and of great quality, and then ship it around the world. This recipe for success has led to Johnnie Walker being the best selling and most popular Scotch Whisky around the world, and that’s down to the generations of master blenders who have continuously made whisky for people to enjoy and savour. It would be an exaggeration to say that Johnnie invented Scotch Whisky, but they were certainly one of the most important contributors to its global appeal.
Dark Whisky is better than Pale No doubt that colour affect perception, but there are many influences on what makes one whisky darker than another which have no bearing on whether a darker whisky is better than a lighter one, or vice versa. Light whiskies can be really powerful in flavour; dark whiskies do tend to be heavier, perhaps even sweeter, but it’s impossible to be 100% certain without tasting.
Single malt is better than blended. The truth is that they are both different from each other. Single malt whisky predates blended Scotch Whisky. However these early malt whiskies were inconsistent and variable in quality. It is only when the great blending houses set to blending malt whiskies with grain whiskies in the mid-nineteenth century that a quality and consistency was achieved. They each have loyal followers but are quite different.
Glassware doesn’t matter Glassware matters a lot. Great whisky needs great crystal. You can’t make an average whisky better simply with a good glass, but if you get the right crystal for the right whisky at the right time in the right place then that’s going to be a great experience.

The best comes from Scotland Only Scotch can come from Scotland. Scotch Whisky is unique amongst whiskies since it has an enormous diversity of flavor; more so than any other category of whisky. That said, there are other fine whiskies around the world, but Scotch has the edge in terms of choice and heritage. Johnnie Walker will be 200 years old in 2020, and that’s a lot of whisky sold to a lot of places and people over many, many years. That’s a hard provenance to beat.
Age + price = quality Many people believe that older whiskies are better than younger whiskies. But, and this is the problem, there are some older whiskies that haven’t taken age well and lose their vitality and gain too much character from the wood. Age is only one factor that affects the quality of a whisky. The original distillery character is important both for single malt whiskies and for the blends that they combine to make. Then again the wood, the cask the whisky is kept in, is critical. So is how long the whisky ages; it has to be just right for the style of single malt or the role of an individual Scotch Whisky in a blend. A blend like Johnnie Walker Blue Label has older whiskies from the West Coast (that need longer to mature properly) combined with some relatively younger whiskies from the East, to give both maturity and vitality to the blend.
Whisky is the ultimate man’s man drink Historically that has been the case and the business has suffered as a result. In talking about aroma, taste and flavour, the idea of enjoying great Scotch Whisky is for everyone and not some old fashioned idea about it being just for men. Since the millennium many brands have set out a broader platform to enjoy Scotch Whisky with no real barrier to gender.

Real men drink whisky neat
“…the right crystal for the right whisky at the right time in the right place, then that’s going to be a great experience.”
Real men make their own rules and find out how they like to have their whisky. Nothing is wrong with neat, but there are many other ways to enjoy whisky, and it’s a bit sad if someone (man or woman) is missing out on their preferred way because of a misguided idea that you can only have it that way. Splash a little iced water, put in an ice cube. Enjoy.
Whisky is Best if Drunk Neat. Many folk like their Scotch Whisky neat. Some insist there is no other way to really appreciate a fine Scotch. In reality there are no rules except to find the way of drinking Scotch that you like. Adding a little water can make a big difference. In many whiskies a whole spectrum of new flavours becomes apparent when you add a tiny drop of water. So, experiment away, don’t over dilute, just find the level that you like best. And if neat works for you then stick with that. ut we’re all different, and that’s the great thing about Scotch Whisky: there are a lot of ways to find the flavour you like.

CIROC The Secret Is In The Grapes. By Chris Moyer and Deborah Grisham.
J
ean-Sebastien Robicquet may very well know more about vodka than anyone else in the world. He looks the part: dressed impeccably and aged perfectly. And when he talks about Ciroc—for whom he is Master Distiller—you know he knows what he’s talking about. It’s in his blood—his family’s roots go back generations to the renowned French wine region of Bordeaux in the 17th century. Upon meeting him at the House of Ciroc in France, we learned more about the lineage that has seeded his mastery. The Robicquets were among the very first family-owned businesses in the cognac trade. Jean-Sebastien obtained a diploma in 1988 in oenology (the study of winemaking) and a Master’s degree in Law, Economics, and Management of the 62
OCEAN Style
Wine Industry two years later. The Great Council of the Bordeaux Wines recognizes him as “Commandeur of Bordeaux.” All of this is relevant because it’s the key to what sets Ciroc apart from other vodkas. Diageo, the company that makes Ciroc, asked Robicquet to develop a vodka made from grapes as opposed to the traditional grains. Robicquet was already devising a process to make various clear liquors from the grapes that he understood so well, and so he focused his intentions with laser-like intensity on one spirit: vodka. There’s a science to it all, and he’s brought it to bear for Ciroc: “The cleaner, the better the wine, the more powerful it will be to distillate,” he explains. “From there,
you can build. You can go to neutral flavour, if you want, or you can make it a highly powerful concentrate of flavours and alcohol that you then blend and distill again for the perfect balance.” The transition from grapes to vodka is a delicate balancing act, however, and distilling the alcohol enough to be considered vodka (the alcohol content must be above 96%) while still retaining flavor is tricky business. “When you do the distillation, depending on the alcohol, if you are at 96%, the flavours are going like that. There are no flavours after 96 percent, but if you remain between 93 percent and 80 percent, then you will have a concentration of flavours and alcohol.” How, then, does Robicquet manage to distill the oceanstylemagazine.com
vodka with a high enough concentration to be considered vodka without sacrificing flavor? It all boils down to the math, he explains. “We do it at 96.4 percent, where it’s neutral. 96 percent is cool, so if you take a high profile, highly concentrated wine and distillate at 93%, and you put 30 litres in 2000 litres and distillate at 96% or 93% alcohol, it will be over 96%. Coming out, it’s still a vodka, but it’s not as flavourless.” So, the intricacies of the distillation process are what set Ciroc apart from other vodkas, as well as the raw materials—especially the grapes. The final step is Ciroc’s charcoal filtration, which further raises the caliber of the drink. “If we do charcoal filtration, we will sweep out everything,” Robicquet says. “This is where we can carve the profile…You still have the ghost of the raw material, which is the grapes. It’s more yummy, juicy, and smooth than grain or beer. Grape juice or beer would be different, of course. This soul, this raw material remains, and we will make it smooth. That’s why people say that Ciroc is smooth. There’s nothing added to it. It’s just because of the raw material.” It seems to be working. Ciroc sold less than 50,000 cases when they launched in the US in 2003. Demand rose but was seen as underperforming at 100,000 cases a year. In 2007, they upped their marketing game, naming Diddy as a celebrity ambassador for the brand, and since then sales have skyrocketed—Ciroc now sells over 2 million cases annually. kling wine. He said, ”I’m a scientist, a wine maker. That’s why I will always explain to you and whoever will listen to me—distillation is cool, but distillation is like cooking. What is important are the ingredients and the creation of the raw material that you will then distill. It’s an easy task. Don Julio
Tequila By Laura Dowrich
D
Innovation at its best
on Julio tequila is one of the leading brands in the world today, but if it weren’t for one man who happened to be a guest at a party held by Don Julio himself, the world would probably never know about this innovative product. Don Julio Gonzales started producing tequila in Mexico in 1942. He spent 40 years perfecting his craft, never believing his concoction was good enough to sell because he was such a perfectionist. It wasn’t until he suffered a stroke and battled subsequent depression and his family decided to throw him a party to celebrate his life that others got to taste what he was distilling. “They made a big party with four hundred, five hundred guests, and they gave that tequila that was there, even though they didn’t have a bottle to serve it,” explained Enrique de Colsa, master distiller for Don Julio tequila. Don Julio, he said, had only two requests: That the drink not be sold and that it be served in short bottles instead of the tall bottles that were popular in Mexico so people could see each other across the tables. The signature squat bottles marked a major innovation in the way tequila was packaged in Mexico, as it was the first short bottle in the industry. “The people said: ‘oh this is amazing, this is a great product, perfect, really getting in love with that’ and then at the end they gave one bottle to each guest, to thank them for getting there.” Two days later a guest called and said he wanted to make his product the greatest in the world, and he put Don Julio on the market.
oceanstylemagazine.com
The tequila became the world’s first luxury tequila and its popularity was driven especially on taste. “To drink Don Julio is something like, you know even the people that don’t have the money to afford Don Julio it is still a special thing. Your daughter is getting married and you want to give a good party, you give them Don Julio,” said Enrique. What sets Don Julio’s taste aside is the Agave plant. Each bottle is made from the pure Weber agave plant grown in the highlands of Jalisco. Each plant is allowed to grow seven to ten years before it is harvested, which contributes to Don Julio’s unique taste. Each agave plant is harvested by hand. The agave plant is cut from its roots, and then the long spear like leaves are sheered off, leaving behind an oval center that’s reminiscent of a pineapple. This core is called a piña and it’s the raw material used to make tequila. The piñas are baked slowly over the course of days and it releases sweet agave syrup. They are crushed and doused with water, and yeast is added to the watery syrup, which is then left to ferment. Once the fermentation process is complete, the sweet, slightly alcoholic agave beer is put into stills, where it’s distilled to become tequila. Blanco tequila is placed in stainless steel tanks where it matures in two months. The others in the product lines are aged in American oak casks. Reposado is aged 60 days to one year and añejo aged one to three years. Don Julio 70, launched last year to celebrate the brand’s 70th anniversary, is a unique product called añejo claro, which is a tequila that has been aged for several years like an añejo, but has been filtered to be clear. Zacapa
changes the rum game. By Laura Dowrich
O
nce the domain of pirates and a symbol of all night drunken fests, rum has now found itself in an elite class. Thanks to brands such as Ron Zacapa, rum has entered the league of luxury spirits. “It (Zacapa) has been changing the perception of rum. Rum is embedded as part of our culture, it’s part of our DNA in the Caribbean” said Rebecca Quinonez, brand ambassador of Ron Zacapa. “I love the fact that in the spirit world rum was never looked at as a luxury, refined spirit. Now it’s refined and that’s beautiful; it’s opened the doors for other rum companies to showcase their reserves.” Founded in 1976 in Guatemala by the Botran family, Ron Zacapa was created when they wanted to celebrate the centennial of the city of Zacapa, where their facility was located. Their master blender created a special rum as a gift. “People loved it. Then they started making it in limited quantities. Twenty cases here, 100 bottles there, as gifts for family members, close friends, dignitaries and Presidents. It was a special reserve rum made only in Guatemala. It became so popular that they decided to really get behind a blend and start commercializing it,” said Quinonez. The rum’s popularity grew and Miami was the first to start receiving it in 1986, followed by Mexico, Europe, Italy, Spain and other small markets. Lorena Vasquez, one of a handful of female master blenders in the world, is the true driver behind Ron Zacapa’s success. Nicaraguan by birth, Vásquez finished her degree in chemistry, food technology and business administration and moved to Guatemala after she married a Guatemalan. Learning from the bottom up, she started working in the Zacapa Quality Control department, where she devel-

oped her innate sensitivity to scents and flavours. Vasquez had studied bio-chemistry and was initially hired to manage the fermentation process. She later became master blender. In the early 1980s she saw the value of Zacapa and felt strongly that it would change the scope of rum because of its profile. She asked the owners to age a million liters of rum.
“She is really the soul of the brand because she had the foresight, the pioneer believing that this is what it would become.” Today Zacapa is truly a global brand; its largest markets are Italy and Spain. Interestingly, Quinonez notes that Zacapa is not just competing against other rums but also whiskey and cognac.

MISS
LILY’S
WEAKNESS FOR THE SWEETNESS
By Tuere Randall
A funky eatery as true to its ‘Yard Man’ Jamaican aspirations as it’s New York City über-cool.
G
ood things come to those who wait, so after two failed attempts due to a lack of reservations and bad timing I finally scored a 6 pm reservation the day of at Miss Lily’s. Apparently, the third time really is the charm. Miss Lily’s is the ragamuffin brainchild of Rockhouse Hotel owner Paul Salmon, Serge Becker and brothers Binn and Gene Jakupi, who collectively have had their hands in über-exclusive nightclubs such as Joe’s Pub, La Esquina, 1Oak and Bungalow 8. Warm, inviting and brilliantly decked out in vibrant hues, the interior of Miss Lily’s easily transports patrons from the frenzy of the concrete jungle outside its doors to a much more relaxed pace. Each detail has been chosen with the distinct purpose of recreating an island vibe, from the giant floral ceramic serving platters that serve as backdrops for the wall lamps, to the soothing sounds of reggae and dancehall wafting from the speakers. Hard to believe that this was the same place that Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour fought hard to keep from opening. My server, Aysia, came over quickly to take my drink order. I selected the “Genius of Love,” a refreshing and melodious blend of mint, passionfruit juice and soju, and a nod to the song by Tom Tom Club as were other similarly named lyrical drinks – “Tempted to Touch,” “Hotstepper,” and “Dutty Wine,” to name a few . Next, I chose two appetizers, the Jerk Corn (whose reputation preceded it) and the Middle Quarters Pepper Shrimp (because the quickest litmus test for a restaurant’s authenticity is to see if they skimp on the pepper in traditionally fiery dishes.) As I waited, my eye darted here and there, taking in even more details, like the ceiling speakers that were each draped in the colors of a different island nation’s flag. Staring at me from the opposite wall was a large picture of the iconic Jamaican beauty Grace Jones. Actually, I was surrounded by beauties – Miss Lily’s has managed to hire one of the best looking (and super attentive) wait staff I’ve seen in a very long time, minus the pretentious, off-duty model shtick that you get at some hot spots in New York City.
oceanstylemagazine.com
I decided to try the corn first, so the pepper from the shrimp wouldn’t interfere with tasting it. Engulfed in toasted, buttery coconut that punctuated the corn’s sweetness, I could detect a hint of the jerk playfully teasing my tongue. Addictive, and very hard to put down, I reluctantly placed the corn aside to taste the shrimp. While flavored differently from any pepper shrimp I’ve bought off the side of the road while driving through Middle Quarters in Jamaica, Miss Lily’s rendition did not disappoint. With its robust and piquant taste, I found myself kicking table manners to the curb as I licked the delicious sauce from my fingers. Although Miss Lily’s offers the standard Jamaican fare including oxtail, curried goat and jerk chicken, I had a difficult time deciding between the steamed fish and the Hellshire Style Fried Whole Snapper, which references the seaside community outside of Kingston that is popular with the locals and in-the-know tourists for its straight-out-the-water fresh fish (usually red snapper). Ultimately, I chose the latter, crossing my fingers that this dish would live up to its name. When the fish arrived, the skin was a crispy golden brown on the outside, and the flesh was succulent and moist beneath. It was lightly seasoned, yet delicious – a very close approximation of the quintessential Hellshire experience. The festival placed a respectable showing, and the pickled carrots, onions and scotch bonnet slices were crisp and tangy. It soon became a distant memory. Given my protruding belly, I was tempted to ask for the check but allowed myself to be talked into the coconut custard dessert special. I knew I was in over my head, but tried to tackle it anyway. Silky and sweet, with a contrasting layer of crunchy butter cookie crumble on top, I got halfway through before I asked one of the wait staff for a to-go bag. At last, it was time for me to step back out into the frenetic pace of Manhattan. As I walked past one of the managers on the way out I said, “All you need here is some dominoes.” He responded, “We have them for sale next door in the gift shop.” Leave it to Miss Lily’s to leave no stone unturned. I have a feeling I’ll be back very soon.

PROFILE Christina Hendricks
C
she dresses up whenever her husband is home, pointing out that three years into a marriage is much too early to begin losing the spark. And meanwhile, her spark within American culture is quickly growing into a forceful explosion.
hristina Hendricks’s Mad Men character, Joan Holloway, has left men drooling and women envious for six seasons, with a seventh slated to begin in 2014. For the 38-year-old Hendricks, art does indeed imitate life. Holloway is a classic femme fatale, luring in adoring men while impressing them with her competence and intelligence. Hendricks effortlessly lives up to her character’s reputation.
The path to her current position at the top of the hierarchy of sexy symbols, however, has been anything but simple. Her own early life was a far cry from Holloway’s. She grew up in the country, far away from the glamour, hustle, and bustle of city life. Her career began in children’s musical performances – a far cry from her sex-saturated days on Mad Men. After a decade-long modeling career, she moved on to television series The Big Time and The Court, but it was Mad Men that cemented her place in the popular consciousness.
We caught up with Hendricks in Rio, where she was recently named Johnnie Walker Blue Label’s first Game Changer in recognition of her influence on American style and culture. The brand, known for its retro-chic image, would be hard-pressed to find any American starlet who more perfectly encapsulated the revival of class and style in American popular culture. Asked about her own favorite drink, Hendricks sticks with the classics. “I just like my Johnny Walker Black on the rocks,” she says, “Very, very simple.” Named Esquire’s Best Looking American Woman in 2010 and listed as the world’s sexiest woman by Esquire’s female readers, her famed hourglass figure has been the subject of much attention. Even political figures have taken notice, with British Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone calling her “absolutely fabulous” and stating that Hendricks has the ideal shape for a woman. Hendricks’s lush red locks have doubtlessly inspired women to plead with their hairdressers to give them the same bold color, but Hendricks herself is a natural blonde. Hendricks isn’t satisfied to rest on her beautiful laurels and has even lashed out at reporters for focusing too much on her body, telling New York Magazine, “I was working my butt off on the show, and then all anyone was talking about was my body.” In a feature story for Health magazine, she remarked that she used to be 15 pounds heavier, and that it was at this slightly heavier weight that she felt her most beautiful. Hendricks understands that sex appeal is fleeting and, to truly stand the test of time, must be carefully cultivated. She told the New York Daily News earlier this year that

“I was working my butt off on the show, and then all anyone was talking about was my body.”
She hasn’t lost her sense of humor and remains remarkably down to earth. In her interview with OCEAN Style, she emphasized that she’s a lover of oddball humor and that she’ll never get tired of Waiting for Guffman. And much like her Mad Men character, she’s happy to eschew one-dimensional stereotypes of the beautiful but unaware bombshell. Hendricks waxed philosophical in our interview, explaining that, if given the opportunity to have lunch with anyone, she’d choose Jesus. “I think that would be a tremendously interesting dinner...I think a lot of people would want to sit down and would want to know the truth about it all,” she explained. For this game changer, the fire shows no signs of going out. She just finished her role in Glee star Chris Colfer’s Struck by Lightning, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. She’s also joined forces with another pop culture icon, Ryan Gosling. His directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster, is slated for release in 2014, and features Hendricks as a single mother who works at a fetish club. For the accordion-playing, knitting aficionado, these roles are light years away from her country girl roots, but she’s happy to take on the challenge. “It’ll be interesting to see what comes up next. Lots of things I’m excited about,” she says with a grin.

RECIPES Curry Goat Sliders Seasoning 2 lbs goat (shoulder or legs – the thigh is best) 2 onions 2 carrots 1 oz thyme pinch of salt 1 oz black pepper Step 1 Season the goat with the mixture of curry powder, cumin, thyme, salt and pepper, rubbing the mixture into the meat. Place in a roasting pan. Add the onions and carrots. Roast for a half hour (depending on how big the meat is) until half way done. In the meantime prepare the curry sauce. Curry Sauce 2 quart of water 5 tomatoes 2 whole onions 1 oz salt 1 oz pepper 4 oz curry powder 2 oz cumin 2 oz Garam Masala 1 tin coconut milk (14 oz) 5 oz natural yogurt 2 scallions 2 oz cilantro chopped ½ scotch bonnet pepper 2 cloves ½ teaspoon anise pinch of cardamom Step 2 In a sauce pan, add the vegetable oil. Heat the pan until oil is sizzling, then add the onions. Let it cook for four minutes, or until almost golden brown. Then add the tomatoes. Keep cooking for 10 minutes. Add curry powder, cumin, garam masala, salt and pepper, cooking for four to five minutes until the curry is roasted (you will be able to smell the curry “burning.”) Keep cooking on a low fire for 20 to 30 minutes. Reduce the sauce by half, stirring the sauce from time to time. Add yogurt and coconut milk while reducing the sauce. Step 3 Remove the half-roasted goat meat from the pan. Slice the meat and put to the side. Add 2 to 3 cups of water to the roasting pan and place on to get flavor of the meat and vegetables. Bring to a boil. Reduce the sauce for 10 minutes over low heat.

Step 4 Combine the reduced sauce and the curry sauce all in one sauce pan. Step 5 Slice the meat thin and add in the combined curry sauce. Cook until the meat becomes tender. Near the end of the cooking time, add the cilantro and the scallions. Check the seasoning. Add salt to taste if necessary. Remove from the stove. Serve on mini buns or brioche bread arranged on a bed of lettuce. Makes 20-30 sliders (serves 10-15).

A Sizzling Summer of
Caribbean fashion Forget about New York, Paris and Milan! Right now it’s all about the 2013 Caribbean fashion shows!
The islands have been heating up with some hot fashion shows proving that they have become major players in the industry. Here’s a recap of Caribbean Fashion Week, Style Week Jamaica and Tobago Fashion Weekend.
2013 Caribbean Fashion Week Kingston, Jamaica Photographer: Oneil Perrin
Featuring a performance by music superstar Kelly Rowland and a fierce selection of hot designs, Caribbean Fashion Week is definitely making its mark on the world. So many different eclectic prints, luxurious fabrics and brilliant colors were used to create pieces that have since stayed on our minds. Notable pieces included a two-piece teal ensemble with a chevron print by Flower Child 1999 by Kaysian Bourke, and there was also an unforgettable, strapless, floor-sweeping gown by Yefikir by Fikirete Addis that we wanted to purchase right there on the spot. The 2013 Style Week Jamaica collections were all about leaving a strong impression. Statuesque models such as Shena Moulton and Jotasha Turnbull floated down the runway in intricately printed gowns and body-hugging pieces. There were also fashion-forward, but incredibly wearable separates and sleek frocks by Cesar Galindo.

DESIGNER TO KNOW
ROMERO BRYAN Another amazing showing at the 2013 Tobago Fashion Weekend was one by Romero Bryan. The young, London-born talent has accomplished so much with such rapid speed it makes you wonder how he has kept up with such a whirlwind. It’s as if everything he touches turns to fashion gold. Since graduating from the London College of Fashion in 2005, his pieces have graced the likes of famous faces: Cameron Diaz, Mariah Carey, Elizabeth Jagger and Kelly Rowland, just to name a few.
Claudia Pegus
At the fashion weekend, not only did his Spring/Summer 2013 collection strut down the catwalk, but special designs produced just for the Tobago scene were also shown. Overall, his clothing had a futuristic femininity to them. They were bold, alluring and would have any woman oozing with an elegant confidence. One of our favorite pieces included a flowing, sheer gown with intricate draping and an unparalleled airiness to it. Other standouts included a stark white dress with ruched sides and a flapper-inspired number that swished and swayed with every move that the model made. It’s quite amazing how Romero Bryan designs contour and slide against a woman’s body just like second skin.

Pigeon Point, Tobago Photography: Inken Janning & Maurice Goddard Tobago....fun! With special guests Vanity Fair Contributing Editor George Wayne and actor Malik Yoba in attendance, a wide range of designs hit the runway. Jeswear featured....juxtaposing bright colors.
What’s very intriguing about Romero is that he isn’t just a creative head. He has also been recognized for his incredible business savvy. Not only was he featured in the Royal Bank of Scotland’s “Rich List 2020,” but he was also hand selected to be on the “Powerlist 2013” of Britain’s Most Influential Black People in partnership with Lloyds Banking Group & Thomson Reuters. In an industry as competitive as fashion, Romero has conquered what many people will only dream of. Whether you knew it or not, Romero Bryan will be a name that you will come to know extremely well. We look forward to seeing what he has in store for us.

island and overseas. She has partnered with a number of top labs and facilities in the US who provide her practice with cutting edge technological support.
The Project Smile initiative was a collaboration between Jamaica Cosmetic Dental Services and OCEAN Style along with partners CVM Television and the Jamaica Observer newspaper. The objective was to find a worthy individual who had been impacted by a dental deformity and who Dr. Anissa Holmes (of Jamaica Cosmetic Dental Services) could rehabilitate.
Through television, print, online, email and social media the contest was promoted and quickly garnered an overwhelming response. The winner was ultimately selected both on the work that was needed and the impact that the applicant felt this would have on their lives. From a short-list of 100+ Julieth Pryce was identified as the lucky winner.
Certain oral deformities may prevent people from flashing their teeth, simply because they feel uncomfortable. The contest was intended to restore someone’s confidence so that they would never have a second thought to give a smile.
by Deborah Grisham
Born with a peg-shaped upper right lateral incisor and without an upper left lateral incisor, Julieth was given a new smile that she can’t help but show off. Juliet absolutely loves her new look and now smiles without a second thought. She shares with us, “It’s a great thing to have a good smile. It just makes you feel good inside and comfortable, which not only makes you happy, but the thought that when you laugh, the whole world laughs with you.”

BLOODY GOOD STUFF AUDI R8 By Eric Polhill
T
he Audi R8 is no longer the upstart supercar it was a few scant years ago, punching up at the Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the world. It is now a fully established halo car, desired by car nuts all over the world, and displayed by younger gearheads as wallpaper on laptops and smartphones (and as wall posters, if posters are even a thing anymore). The 2014 R8 is available as a coupe or in the convertible “spyder” trim. Both coupe and spyder are powered by either V8 or V10 engines. The new top-of-theline R8 V10 Plus gets a horsepower bump and is billed as the fastest R8 yet.
The 2014 R8 has two engine options: Audi’s 4.4-liter V8 that puts out 430 horsepower with 317 lb-ft of torque produced between 4500 and 6000 rpm, or the mighty 5.2-liter V10 with its 525 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque at 6500 rpm. The new 2014 R8 V10 Plus “adds lightness” with carbon-fiber panels, unique wheels, ceramic brakes, a conventional suspension (instead of the magnetic damping setup on the other R8s), and other weight-saving measures that combine for a loss of just over 100 pounds. Some aerodynamic pieces enter the mix, too, but let’s just be honest — the real story is that the V10 Plus is good for 550 horsepower, 398 lb-ft of torque, a zero-to-60 mph time of 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 196 mph when equipped with the new 7-speed S-Tronic transmission. All 2014 R8 iterations are all-wheel drive. If you love fast cars and are crazy about driving, try an R8 V10 Plus. If THAT isn’t enough car for you, you may need to consider getting shot from a cannon with one of those flying-squirrel-looking glider suits for transportation.

Faces of Carnival It’s been long described by Trini’s the world over as “the greatest show on Earth”. Exactly when and how the phrase came to be so closely associated with Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival is up for fervent discussion. Photographer Mark Tomaras took his maiden journey to the twin island republic known for its energy and party culture, at its most fervent time of year. One of the things that struck him was the melting pot of people, cultures, races, religions and ethnicities. Here in his Faces of Carnival we share some of those images.

iki Valdes’ solo show “The Valdeziacs” opened in April 27th, 2013 at 101/Exhibit in Miami’s Design District. The exhibition features new works which play with emotion, form, abstraction and expressionism using non-specific cartoon characters. The opening reception was well attended by the who’s who in the Miami art scene, as well as many supporters and art enthusiasts. Collector Martin Margulies joined his son Michael Margulies of the Margulies Artist Agency at the opening. Valdes’ current work deconstructs cartoon influences into figurative and abstract paintings. The new paintings have fluidity, while we still see some of Valdes’ earlier interpretations of abstraction as well. Especially in the series entitled “Studies” Valdes uses an earlier style of collage like overlapping of canvases to examine texture and depth. One of the most prominent features of Valdes’ current work is his references to cartoon characters. Implied also in the title of the exhibition, which references the ‘90s cartoon series “The Animaniacs,” the artist explores the use of cartoons but with expressionistic tendencies. Valdes added, “I feel the work has a certain quality that painters can identify with. They aren’t pop. I like to think they have a joyful anger.” At first glance many of the cartoon faces appear happy, but are they happy? There certainly is an underlying layer that addresses varied emotions and expresses an undercurrent of lunacy and rage.
106
OCEAN Style
The duality between the figurative and the abstract is evident in the way Valdes arranges the cartoon imagery and the abstract aspects on the canvas. The exaggerated eyes, mouth or limbs may take precedence at times as they evoke connotations and memories. Valdes explains the duality further, “The paintings may pull in the viewer who is more familiar with historical painting and it may pull somebody else in who knows less about art but knows more about Cartoon Network. The work plays with different peoples’ perceptions of art and popular culture. For me, if I need to make an abstract painting, it doesn’t make sense to splatter paint around but rather to actually use images I grew up with.” “The Valdeziacs” is a culmination of Valdes’ work to date. The paintings show his maturation as an artist, the development of his technique as well as his aesthetics and ideas. In July, Valdes will participate in artMRKT in the Hamptons. Further projects and exhibitions will be announced soon for fall and winter. oceanstylemagazine.com

An interesting factoid, perhaps, but a lot more useful is this recipe for a twist on the classic ‘Whiskey Sour’.
