the pursuit of excellence In Malcolm Gladwell’s iconic book Outliers he speaks to the magic number of 10,000 which in both his tome and as supported by other independent scientific studies, is the number of hours you have to invest in something before you attain a certain level of mastery. It is the argument that talent without hard work is merely a conversation of what could be without truly deserving the time or effort to have said conversation. I use this as a title of my note not to imply that we or this particular publication have attained or are worthy of this noun. I use the word because as I look through the pages of this issue it is what comes to mind; the common thread that links the careers of Gabrielle Reece, Greg Norman and Freddie Leiba to brands such as Sandals, Audi, Land Rover and Johnnie Walker Blue. Beyond these established and highly acclaimed individuals and brands, within our pages we are fortunate to capture the work and efforts of so many individuals for whom we are the fortunate beneficiaries of their commitment to excellence in their journalistic endeavours. More than anything else, though, when you peel back the layers of accomplishment we find the reality of hard work, character, determination and application. It’s a privilege and pleasure to compile this issue. I am not sure how far away from or beyond the 10,000 hour threshold we sit. Nor am I aware of the gap between where we sit and the distance to that lofty measure that is excellence; but what I do know is that with the help of our cherished contributors and audience, we will continue in our pursuit of publishing excellence. Thank you for taking the time to share OCEAN Style and I look forward to your continued feedback, suggestions and, yes, slaps on the wrist when we screw up!

All the Best,

MOONWALK MEMORIES

INSPIRED

Loved your article on Michael Jackson! I have been a big fan of MJ since I was 5. I remember the days whenever we had a family gathering and my aunts and uncles would pay me to do the moonwalk! (That was a very profitable time for me.) I even had a big poster of him on the wall in my bedroom, hoping one day when I woke up he’d be there to greet me. Though he’s gone, for me no one can ever take the place of the King of Pop. He was truly one of a kind! Samantha Down New York, NY

I have been so inspired by your interview with Anna Ruth Henriques. Her pieces are absolutely elegant! Best of all, they are wearable with any kind of outfit. I have just started on my accessories business for about three months now and I am really hoping to be like her someday. I so agree with what she said about taking a class and gaining experience. My clientele for now are just my friends and family, but I’d love to have my own boutique someday. Amanda Robinson New York, NY

EXQUISITE FASHION

I love your fashion show events at Half Moon in Jamaica. This was my third year and I have to say they are always so classy and well produced, from the models to the clothes. You guys do a really good job of promoting the beauty and sophistication of the Caribbean. Keep it up! Bernice Davis Montego Bay, Jamaica

LOVE THE FASHION

Wonderful fashion shoots in your issues. I especially liked the Lines Solitaire shoot….very sleek and elegant pages. I am dying to visit the Caribbean – your pages really bring it to life for me. Meg Hampton Los Angeles, CA

I was thoroughly impressed by your Curaçao Casual fashion editorial. The gowns were exquisite. It’s wonderful to finally see more of a high fashion presence in a Caribbean publication.

It shows that there is more to offer here than sun and fun. I recently moved back to Trinidad after living in Europe for a few years, and your publication was a welcome breath of fresh air. Thanks for feeding my craving for couture! Alicia Rampersad Trinidad & Tobago

BEYONCé FIT

Your fitness guide-20 Steps to Beyonce’s Killer Legs was one word-AMAZING! I posted it in my workout room, alongside a picture of ‘Queen Bey’ herself for extra inspiration; referring back to it from time to time for that extra push. Now, if only I could get your hunky fitness expert Mark Jenkins to make house calls for additional motivation-LOL! Thanks to your great fitness tips and fashion layouts to accompany them. This year I’m mini skirt ready! Jocelyn Adams Barbados

GUAVA YUM

I tried the Guava BBQ Scallops for a dinner party recently and they were a huge hit. I thoroughly enjoy Caribbean cooking and look forward to more recipes. My suggestion is to add more recipes in each issue. Paula Gooding New York, NY

BEAUTY [ Susan Trumpbour ]

My Beauty Secrets B

eauty editor isabelle tin-aung asks founder of my beautyberry website, susan trumpbour, what makes it on her list of favorite beauty produCts and her personal seCret to beauty.

Businesswoman Susan Trumpbour is not afraid of trying different beauty products, whether for the hair, face or nails. As founder of one of the leading beauty expert websites in the internet world, mybeautyberry.com and with more than 15 years in the beauty industry as an editor and product development executive, Susan has tried her fair share of lip pencils, blushes and mascaras. Some work and some just don’t make the cut. We caught up with Susan and got her to reveal some of her beauty secrets to our OCEAN Style Magazine readers. What is your daily morning beauty regimen? I start by using a very mild exfoliant on my skin followed by about 10 splashes of very cold water. I pat dry and apply an antioxidant-rich serum, followed by a sunscreen (SPF 30) to my face and décolleté area. What are your sun care secrets? I grew up loving the look of bronzed skin. I learned later in life to protect my skin and now I apply sunscreen on my face 365 days a year. I also exfoliate my body regularly to keep it looking healthy and supple. Biggest influence on your beauty regimen? I honestly think the biggest influence on my beauty regimen have been dermatologists. Hearing them repeatedly share their advice and expertise - wear sunscreens, use antioxidants and retinols - has sunk in and really made a HUGE difference to my skin. I think Cate Blanchett has amazing skin. Your website MyBeautyberry.com has a huge following. What is the best part of your job? The best part of my job is being first in line to report on the year’s latest technology innovations and the season’s most covert shades. Nothing thrills me more to share this news with my readers. What is in your makeup bag that would surprise people? I think it is more like “what isn’t in my makeup bag”. I found as I am older I’ve become comfortable in my own skin and hardly bring makeup for touch-ups. It is what it is from the time I leave my house in the morning until the time I get home. I believe great skin radiates beauty and as you mature less is more. Any travel makeup or beauty tips? I like to travel with products that are great multi-taskers. One of my favorites is BioOil. It acts as a great moisturizer, sunburn soother or hair replenisher (www.bio-oil. com). It does it all! I tend to stay away from powder makeup. Skin tends to be dryer when you travel and powder only highlights the dryness. You will always find me packing a skin rescue mask, a moisturizing tint and NARS Multiple Stick, which acts as a great illuminator, blusher-- even eye and lip tint! The key is to keep the skin looking luminous and combat the effect of parched skin ($39 at www.narscosmetics.com) You’re stranded on an island. What’s your beauty must have? I actually have been stranded on one of my most favorite islands in the world, Anguilla, without my beauty bag. Luckily, I had two tinted lip balms with me - a rose tint balm from Ole Henriksen (try Ole Henriksen’s African Red Tea Exfoliating Lip Salvation, $15, www.sephora.com) and Fresh Sugar Rose ($22.50, www.fresh.com). The color made it acceptable to use as a tint of blush as well as a balm for lips. A colored lip balm is my beauty must-have!! Check out Susan’s many fabulous beauty tips on her website www.mybeautyberry.com. • oceanstylemagazine.com

What happens when you combine the skill of an internationally recognized, luxury leather goods designer, arguably one of the finest scotches in the world together with the legacy of one of the most successful golfers of all time? In short you get the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Greg Norman Collection. Designed by Bill Amberg the Collection includes this fabulous ‘Venturer’ bag designed specifically for the distinguished, and highly discriminating, world traveler. You might need to know someone who knows someone to get your hands on it though, as global availability of the blue calfskin leather bag will be limited to 331, reflecting the number of weeks Norman spent as the world’s number one golfer. The Venturer is suitably appointed and contains a suit compartment, shirt pocket and three bespoke accessories for the gentleman at the top of his game. A bottle of Blue Label is stowed securely in the detachable carrier, accompanied by a leather-trimmed hip flask and four stainless steel cups in a leather holder. There are also slots to neatly hold golf tees and golf balls, cufflinks or four watches. Created for the discerning traveler and perfectly appointed this majestic bag is simply, bloodygoodstuff.

BEAUTY [ Secrets ]

Lengthy and Full lashes

It’s simple! Dab some loose powder on lashes and apply your mascara. The powder will help lengthen the lashes. Repeat this step until you are fully satisfied.

Quick Foundation Application

W

hen it comes to makeup, every woman wants to know the fastest way to get the job done. with over 3 years of experience, pro makeup artist loni Jones mastered some quick and easy ways to get beautified, whether it is a simple look for daytime, or sexy and seductive for the night. embrace these tips and do your make up 1-2-3.

Nude Lips

Instead of splurging on nude lipsticks, use your concealer or your foundation instead. Go matte or shiny by adding a bit of gloss on top. (Try Make Up Forever HD Invisible Cover Foundation, $40, www.sephora.com)

SMOKEY EYE Dab loose powder under the eyes. This will catch any loose bits of the dark shadow you are using to get that smokey look. Using a small dome-shaped brush (try NARS small dome brush #12, $27, www.amazon.com), apply your dark color of choice for smokey effect in the crease of the eye (blend upwards), on the lid and lightly under bottom lashes. Finish with two coats of black mascara and don’t forget to dust away the loose powder under the eyes. We say no to raccoon eyes!

Use your fingers! Sponges and brushes soak up the foundation, so half of it stays on the brush instead of going on your face. Apply the foundation like you would your face moisturizer. Just make sure the application is even and you’re good to go!

Blush Baby

Out of blush? Use your pink or red colored lipstick instead. Swipe color on your cheekbones and blend into the skin with your fingers.

Bronzed and Beautiful

Avoid the sun and get sun kissed with a bronzer instead. Apply bronzer lightly to the areas of the face that the sun naturally hits: the forehead, nose and cheekbones. Start off light and add on if needed. (try Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder, $49, www.guerlain.com)

FEATURE [ Gabrielle Reece ]

By Chie Davis

Gabrielle Reece is a quintessential balance of Caribbean chill and tenacity. The incredibly gifted and accomplished superstar athlete and model has moved her field of endeavor from the volleyball courts and runways to prime time television and online with the same incredible results... all while betraying her age with a body that would make a 25 year old love to hate her. 42

ith the ripe California rays beaming down, sending shoCkwaves of vitamin d pumping throughout her body, the pungent mix of sea salt, sweat and sand soaked into her skin. adrenaline kiCking in, its go time! An Olympian challenger never falters. A vicious serve, a couple of knee-buckling kills and finally a few deep winded ‘good game’s later, it was official…Gabrielle Reece, a leader of one of the best beach volleyball teams ever assembled completed the 1999-2000 Olympic challenge series. Quickly dusting off her custom made Nike beach wear and tucking a few golden flyaway hairs in place, for the statuesque 6’3 pro, it was just another day at the office. At a glance one can’t help but think - beach bombshell. Cascading blonde hair and bright eyes- Gabrielle Reece, often dubbed one of the world’s sexiest athletes, has a wholesome beach-girl type sensuality that cannot be denied. Her outer magnetism comes complete with an athletic build and piercing stare, strictly to illustrate that she means business and is not simply in it for designer bikini and glittering endorsement deals. When the media first caught wind of Reece, in the late nineties fresh off being inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame for setting two volleyball records for Florida State University, she garnered accolades from the worlds of athletics and beauty. Gracing ‘The Most Beautiful’ lists of print and television outlets like Elle Magazine, People, E! and Sports Illustrated, while still in college, she became the new mold for the female athlete. After Women’s Sports & Fitness named Gabby one of the ‘20 Most Influential Women in Sports’ in August 1997, the magazine’s editor wrote, “I believe she represents, finally, the answer to all the image-questing pendulum swinging of the decades gone by. Who is the female athlete? She is everything once thought to be an inherent contradiction. She is strong and beautiful, sweaty and feminine, tough and ladylike.” An answer to all the image-questing pendulum swinging of the decades gone by? That’s a hefty compliment for a then 27-year old, who now at 41 smiles coyly when reflecting upon topping beauty lists, simply saying that she believes in beauty radiating from the inside out. When told that she had been named to OCEAN Style’s 51 Most Beautiful she replied, “I always love those lists, don’t you? Its like who did I know to get on that list, or who did I hurt to get off that list?” While some celebrities secretly ogle at their own headlines or are publicly swallowed by their own hype, it’s abundantly clear upon her near punctual arrival at The Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills, that Gabby is not that girl. Warned ahead of time that the mother of three and entrepreneur only had a few hours to shoot between back-to-back meetings (about everything from exercise equipment to television pitches), the gracious glamazon apologized profusely for arriving 10 minutes late and promised to stay until the final money shot had been captured. Clad in dark denim, a simple two- toned tee and flip-flops, her laid back style also transferred to her overall chill mode. Politely refusing the typical pampering of green tea, soothing elevator music, and a delicate breakfast to ‘ease her in,’ it looked as if Gabby was quietly thinking ‘…where’s the reggae?’ while declaring that the unexpected rain wasn’t going to damper the shoot. Calming the fears of the photographer and production staff who were frantically mapping out alternate locations in their rain contingency plan, Reece relaxed in the hair/makeup chair and like clock-work slipped into girl talk with makeup artist Naomi Priestly (who happens to be oceanstylemagazine.com

the wife of 90210 alum, actor Jason Priestley). They swapped tales of raising kids under the watchful eye of Hollywood, expanding their families and their famous husbands…(Reece has been married to Hawaiian big-wave surfer-Laird Hamilton for 14 years). The downpour in the background was quickly forgotten. “No big deal, I’ve been at it for a lot of years, and it’s all about perspective. We’re taking photos, so you know we’ve got to have fun with it and make the work environment pleasant” she said. Gabrielle Allyse Reece credits her laid back nature to her Caribbean upbringing that has stamped an indelible imprint on her own parenting. Born in La Jolla, California, her family (mom from Long Island, New York and dad from Trinidad) moved to St. Thomas when she was young. “Its like anything, its what you know. I grew up with my stepfather and he’s from Puerto Rico, but my biological father who passed away when I was five, was from Trinidad. So my family’s Caribbean.” She carries the legacy of her father close. Their interaction was cut short after he was tragically killed in a plane crash. After wearing his sterling silver cross necklace, Gabrielle desired something more permanent and had a stylized replica of the cross tattooed on the inside of her right ankle.

Who is the female athlete? She is everything once thought to be an inherent contradiction. She is strong and beautiful, sweaty and feminine, tough and ladylike. 43

“Growing up in St. Thomas, it was the most action packed island at the time, besides Puerto Rico. So we went to Virgin Gorda in the BVI to get away, which is kind of funny (to get away from paradise). I loved the fact that when I was a small child, my cousins and I had boats to get around. We’d go to Bath & Turtle, its exquisite there. Growing up on an island its kind of like growing up in a small town. It’s all about accountability and you can’t really get away with anything. You have an opportunity to trust your instincts and get a good beat on people.” It was that small island charm and instinctual nature that took her to levels of achievement that she says that she had never fathomed for herself. She dabbled in volleyball while in St. Thomas, but got serious after moving to St. Petersburg, Florida with her mother in the 11th grade, alter securing a scholarship to Florida State University. Once credited as saying, “I enjoy getting the ball to go exactly where I want it, at the speed I want it to go,” was perhaps a predictor of Reece’s swift rise to fame. After a record setting college volleyball career, she toured as a pro and the wins and accolades quickly followed including, First Place at the inaugural Beach Volleyball World Championships, kills leader for four consecutive years with the Women’s Beach Volleyball League, Offensive Player of the Year, and League Co-Champion during her fourth year captaining Team Nike. Team Nike recognized ‘Team Gabby’ as a viable brand, signing her on as the first female athlete in the mid nineties to design a shoe and the first female ever to be a cross training spokesperson. She launched a series of 4 different collections, alongside Air Jordan designer Tinker Hatfield. Not only did Reece’s Air Patrol outsell Air Jordan’s - it was the first women’s shoe to outsell men’s. 44

While most were lining up for work-study jobs during college, her second campus was New York City where she carved out a second career as a fashion model. Designers and fashion editors welcomed her athletic and healthy looking build, a stark contrast from the Twiggy-esque creatures that populated both high fashion and fitness magazines. Appearing on the covers of Elle, Life, Shape and even Playboy magazine, she became that woman you wished you could hate—but ultimately couldn’t because she’s so undeniably fierce.

(Good Morning America, The Today Show, Chelsea Lately, Extreme Makeover and America’s Next Top Model) under her belt she knows how to be natural while still playing to the camera.

“You learn very early that image is everything. You could be super talented but if you don’t learn how to communicate on the image side, it can be kind of tricky. So I felt like I retired from modeling a long time ago, but the reality is that it’s just a way to communicate your image. But it is kind of funny sometimes, like ohhhgooddd, I’m still taking pictures in a bikini?? But you just have to say thank you.”

Her goal is not necessarily to stay camera ready, as it is to share her healthy lifestyle. Competing in the sand while 5 months pregnant with her second child, Brody, she gave new meaning to staying fit while pregnant. She decided to do a real time pregnancy DVD that walks women through exercises appropriate for each trimester of their pregnancy. She taped the segments as she herself progressed in her pregnancy. Filling a void in the fitness marketplace, once again, Gabrielle Reece struck gold.

As the rain tapered off to a drizzle, the OCEAN Style cover shoot ensued on the rooftop of the Montage Hotel. Complete with Spanish styled architecture the exclusive retreat is opened by gripping iron entry gates that lead to a pool area overlooking Los Angeles. Offering solace to notable guests, like Oprah Winfrey, the private cabanas are the scene of the first shot. Peruvian photographer, Bell Soto’s original plans were to simulate a Caribbean feel in LA, “but obviously due to the rain, its very dark and cloudy, so I’m going to go with an airy feel, where all of the light is coming through the windows and it’s a heavenly feeling rather than Caribbean afternoon.” The seasoned model carefully makes her way to the cabana, dodging puddles in a white bathrobe. While the crew shivers, Soto pops his collar and focuses his lens on Gabrielle Reece. She bravely disrobes, revealing an itsy bitsy bikini and a megawatt smile that outshines the bold colors in her suit. As the looks change and the camera keeps clicking, she moves as directed with a fluid understanding of her best angles and stances. With a string of acting roles and guest appearances

“She’s pretty confident. She works out and her body is amazing so she doesn’t have to be so self-conscious of what she’s wearing because she takes such good care of herself,” says stylist Sarah Elle, who has worked with Gabby for 14 years after initially meeting her at the Goodwill Games.

Now producing her own health and fitness related projects, which include workout DVDs, a web series with Vaseline, health segments featured on Rachel Ray and Fit TV and her own website (gabbyreece360. com) where she pumps out free fitness and nutrition tutorials, Gabby’s days are packed to the gills. Once photographer Bell Soto yells ‘it’s a wrap,’ she emerges from the pool, re-energized for the rest of the day, which includes a number of meetings, playing an active role in her three daughter’s lives and being a wife. “Working out is good for my mental sanity, and when I train there’s mostly peace at my house. I’m married to somebody who is from Hawaii, from an island, so we always joke that there’s a short hand between us because we grew up so similar.” Splitting their time between Malibu and the island of Hawaii feels right for this Trinidadian who says that her secret to happiness is simple“…being in nature, by the ocean and gathering with people, now that’s what makes me happy.”

Appearing on the covers of Elle, Life, Shape and even Playboy magazine, she became that woman you wished you could hate —but ultimately couldn’t because she’s so undeniably fierce. oceanstylemagazine.com

Scotland ESCAPE:

By Deborah Grisham

My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here, My heart’s in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer; A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe, My heart’s in the Highlands, wherever I go. Robert Burns - My Heart’s in the Highlands. Scotland immediately impresses with its vast countryside. The population density of this, the most northern part of the UK, is low with its population of 5.4 million enjoying over 30,000 square miles. Arriving at Aberdeen airport my first night was spent at Aldourie Castle on the southern shore of Loch Ness (famous for its mythical monster). Aside from the myriad tales of Loch Ness Monster sightings and ‘evidence’ to both prove and debunk its existence, the 23 mile long, 1 mile wide Loch Ness, which holds more water than all the lakes of England and Wales combined, itself has a very rich and interesting history. In fact rich history seems to be a recurring and fascinating theme in Scotland. From the many wars fought throughout its past, including those waged by the famous warrior William Wallace (portrayed in Bravehart by the now infamous Mel Gibson, alas I digress….) there is no mistaking that the Scots are an extremely proud lot. They also share some striking similarities to their ‘Caribbean’ relatives – not the least the ability to heartily enjoy a good few beverages and lots of laughs. My journey began in the lap of luxury on British Airways’ First Class and it must be said that they leave little on the ground. The service was top-notch, the amenities seemingly endless and the journey, as long as it was, extremely comfortable. I welcomed the opportunity to visit Scotland which, according to the kind gentleman

who researched our family history some years back, is home to at least part of my heritage. I stayed at Aldourie Castle. Of course staying at any ‘castle’ has a certain ring to it but as you approach via the long driveway you are immediately impressed by both the structure and the overall aesthetic. Situated on over 500 acres, the Aldourie Castle Estate is surrounded by picturesque grounds and woodlands and of course the expanse of water that is Loch Ness. There are fifteen bedrooms all with their own individual décor and personality, from grand four-posters, swathed in sumptuous velvets to cozy little single rooms, with a charm all of their own. Each bedroom and bathroom is entirely individual. There is a simplicity to Scotland that is refreshing; the traditions and history are rich and yet so accessible. Whether it was hearing my new Scottish friends trade tales of wars, arguments or experiences long gone or the eerie yet captivating sound of a bagpipe playing, or loud, boisterous laughter emanating from a local pub, there is a magnetic charisma to the place that makes you feel very comfortable. There is a fresh, crisp, purity to the air in Scotland. In a place noteworthy for the quality and freshness of its air, they are noticeably absent from its folks.

THE LOWDOWN ON MR. BLUE

Is JohnnIe Walker Blue laBel

really more than Just great BrandIng? by Douglas Gordon

T

he heart and soul of the Johnnie Walker brand, in my estimation is Blue. Or Mr. Blue as I have heard it called by one fan of the premium libation. Positioned at the premium of the premium line of whiskies from the esteemed distillery Johnnie Walker Blue Label not only sells for several multiples more than its Red, Black and Green cousins, it represents much more. Now, truth be told, on a recent trip and in the company of all manner of scotch experts of seemingly every type (specializing in everything from combining aromas, to fermentation, to blending and much more) I came to realize that my self-confessed limited knowledge of scotch was really far more limited than even I had understood. So before I can answer the question I posed at the beginning of this article let’s review Scotch 101 (see sidebar) to understand the process from malt to liquid magic. I count myself as privileged to have been educated by Jim Beveridge about both the finer points of making, tasting and enjoying a fine scotch and how this particular brand is crafted. Jim is a Master Blender for Johnnie Walker Blue Label, and of a top blending lineage that dates back to 1820 Scotland. The task and responsibility of blending this particular scotch is reserved for a handful of whisky experts around the world both highly versed in the world of scotch and, even more so, the world of Johnnie Walker. Beveridge is as matter of fact and impressive with his easy recall of the history, process and differences in various whiskies and malts as he is, genuinely, a lovely person.

Most novices assume a single malt is better than a blend. The logic, to which I too initially subscribed, being that something that is pure must be better than something that is combined. But through the tutelage of Beveridge and after visiting such fine single malt distilleries as Cardhu, you come to appreciate the art that is blending. In its most base representation you are mixing (blending) different single malt whiskies to create a scotch with a unique quality, character and flavour. Of course, based on the process of creating even a single malt whisky, every batch might have a slightly different taste and character, just as every cask. The art of recreating this process over and over again and to keep a taste profile within a specific range is where ‘mixing’ departs and the art that is ‘blending’ established. I put the question of substance versus messaging to both Driver and Beveridge “Is Johnnie Walker Blue a case of clever marketing first and product differentiation second?” Showing that I’m far from as clever as I thought (so much for my “gotcha” moment) they proceeded to explain the carefully controlled, painstaking process by which each batch Blue is crafted. The blending process, to create Johnnie Walker Blue is intense. Johnnie Walker Blue Label is typically comprised of nine or more different types of malt and grain whisky. Three batches are created each year with each comprising a mixture of old and young whiskies with each batch taking approximately four months to ‘marry’ together. And how is a cask deemed fit for Johnnie Walker

explaining the various ‘notes’ and aromas that are contained within a single shot of a particular whisky. He operates “Scotland’s only working perfume studio” and despite his long-bearded nutty professor appearance apparently sports a brand new Jaguar. (In Twitter-speak they might say #dontjudgeabookbyitscover). Dr. Dodd’s seeming limitless knowledge about aromas and passion of his subject matter, notwithstanding, the cynic in me was left no less convinced that perhaps these various strains of scotch at various price points were truly nothing more than carefully positioned marketing messages. No more ‘clever’ than the way a Toshiba and Panasonic are manufactured in the same plant but the determination of which logo to slap on is a function of which market and which price point, the product fundamentally being the exact same. Jonathan Driver Blue consideration? Not easily. A mere 1 in 10,000 casks is deemed to be of sufficient character for Johnnie Walker Blue Label. While over 100,000 cases are sold per year, as Jonathan Driver, Global Brand Ambassador explained “each batch is made up of different individual whiskies [so] demand has to be forecast some 12-18 years out in order to manage production.” It is a reflection of the intense and highly skilled process of blending that leads to each bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label being individually numbered. And taste?

While recommended neat it

again reverts back to personal taste. With my newly acquired scotch knowledge I tried it both neat and with a splash of water and found that the water did exactly as promised and that was to ‘open’ the flavor palette – allowing for my taste buds to enjoy the smooth, woody, sweet and mellow character of each sip. Memorable Moments My hands-on training over the period of 5 days in Scotland included a session with one of the truly most interesting characters I have ever encountered in my life, Dr. George Dodd. Dr. Dodd is fascinating, passionate, garrulous and a touch eccentric. He could potentially wax on for hours (possibly days)

So while I absolutely agree with Beveridge that, like cigars and wine, evaluating one scotch over another is invariably more a matter of personal taste, than one scotch being inherently ‘better’ than the other. The experience, however, also left me with a totally different appreciation for the craft, skill and human precision that has been invested and continues at work to create each bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue. I can safely say that when you pay the premium represented by a bottle of Blue you are acquiring many careful and detailed hours of selection and decades of expertise. To know that I am enjoying something that has had such care and precision, talent and dedication invested in its production affords it the lofty distinction as world class.

Scotch 101 Production Process: How is Scotch Whisky made? There are two kinds of Scotch whisky: Malt whisky which is made by the Pot Still process and Grain Whisky which is made by the Patent Still (or Coffey Still) process.

MASHING - The malt is now mixed with very hot water in a circular, flat-bottomed vessel known as the Mash Tun. Mashing releases starch, which breaks down into sugar to create a sweet liquid - the wort.

A GUIDE TO MAKING SCOTCH MALT WHISKY The Pot Still process by which Malt whisky is made may be divided into four main stages: malting, mashing, fermentation and distillation.

FERMENTATION - Yeast is now added to the wort, starting a fermentation process to convert sugar into alcohol. This process normally takes place in large wooden vats or washbacks, and can last several days. The fermented liquid, with an alcoholic strength similar to a weak beer, will be called ‘wash’.

MALTING - Barley is the main raw material in all single malt Scotch whiskies. First, the barley must be put through the process of malting, during which the grain germinates and is kiln-dried. The malt is carefully ground to split open the grain without crushing it entirely. This will allow the starch inside to be released during mashing.

DISTILLATION - The unmistakable shape of a copper still tells us much about the process of distilling, a two-stage batch process. A large volume of alcoholic liquid - the wash - is heated to boil off a small amount of spirit. This spirit is condensed, either in

a series of thin copper tubes or in an old fashioned ‘worm’, before undergoing a second distillation, which gives the spirit both strength and flavour. MATURATION - The spirit needs to mature in an oak cask in Scotland for at least three years before it qualifies as Scotch whisky. Though three is the minimum for Scottish malts, most distilleries leave their whiskies to mature for much longer, often between 10 and 20 years. Of course while the above has been edited for space (and interest) it is but a simplistic overview of the journey taken by the barley that will eventually end up on the other side of a Johnnie Walker label.

Doug “Hollywood” Gore We recently caught up with ATL Automotive Racing Team race-car driver Doug “Hollywood” Gore and interviewed the Jamaican speedster for our Coffee Shop. Turns out that he has quite the sense of humor… What project are you focused on right now? The design and building of my office/warehouse complex, the new home of MoBay Freight Services, has been very time consuming. Additionally the acquisition and development of the new Audi DTM race car is currently quite an exciting and learning opportunity for me and the ATL Automotive racing crew. Who is your favorite designer? I seem to lean toward comfort and casual dress over Armani or Calvin Klein suits and ties. Fortunately my business and lifestyle does allow me this luxury so a simple Polo shirt and casual style jeans would be me. Your favorite place in the world to relax? How do you unwind when you’re there? Traveling and seeing and doing new things are always fun and exciting yet often not actually relaxing. Relaxing to me is being able to escape my phone and responsibilities and enjoy the day with my wife, Debs, daughter Sabrina and son Tommi at the Silver Sands beach enjoying our beautiful Jamaica waters. Favorite new trend, worst new trend? Best new trend this decade obviously has been the global technology development which has really changed all our lives. I too find myself now dependent on internet, email, Blackberry etc. which all obviously also have their pros and cons. Just don’t mess with my HD signal during a football game and we’ll be good. Worst new trend is also technology development as today’s young generations are now missing out on so many outdoor and physical activities that they’ll never experience. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen kids playing “hide and seek” or “cowboys and Indians”. If it’s not a video game they don’t seem interested. Finally another worst new trend has to be the recent “pants falling off” fashion. Enough said. One item that you always purchase at the grocery store. Smirnoff Ice and Slam Condoms. (oops sorry please don’t print that, my wife will kill me) Most recent splurge? Our ATL Automotive, Boom/Wata, Petcom/Pace Audi Racecar! Top 3 things that make you feel sexy? When the girls at races ask me for my Autograph, a new suit, standing at the start line of a new race. Who would you most enjoy inviting to dinner? Where would you dine? White Witch restaurant at the Ritz Carlton in Montego Bay with Clint Eastwood. But I also enjoy going with my wife Debra. Your biggest celebrity crush? Jessica Alba! Favorite appetizer? Stuffed mushrooms at Captains Tavern in Miami. Special Advertising Section

Doug with CEO Adam Stewart

One thing that gets you through Monday mornings? A cup of coffee and reading Wheels Jamaica online. Your favorite hotel? Spanish Court Hotel in Kingston. If your life had a theme song what would it be? “ROCKY” (many hard knocks, but get up to fight another day). If you only had 7 hours in your most favorite city in the world what would you do? Go to the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Dallas Texas and have a big juicy steak. If you could eat one food in excess, without gaining a pound, what would it be? Chocolate Ice Cream 3 things that you often dream about at night. Cars, Girls, My Mom -(I miss her) Favorite way to stay in shape. I enjoy swimming in the ocean whenever I get the chance. It really seems to be best exercise when trying to get the most out of your time served. For the full interview log on to oceanstylemagazine.com.

World Demand for Audi In a world of burgeoning new economies and a demand for the very best, the concept of luxury is being redefined again and again. Establishing itself as the ‘must have’ automobile amongst the planet’s elite is the Audi. German auto maker Audi has risen to seize the lion’s share in leading international markets throughout the world such as China and India thanks to its heart-stopping aesthetics and peerless reliability. As part of the Volkswagen group, the car company recently delivered the highest profits in the automotive industry last year. Audi enjoys shared engineering and technology with some of the world’s leading car brands. Featuring the ‘luxurious creature comforts’ perfected by Bentley, the high performance of Porsche and safety features pioneered by Volkswagen, Audi incorporates distinctive and stylish aesthetics to make it truly unique. These are some of the reasons Audi has become the car of choice for the world’s wealthiest and most famous people. Etus Collman, Senior Sales Consultant for ATL Autohaus - Jamaica’s exclusive Audi dealership notes, “Audi represents the world’s best in engineering, technology, and design as well as performance. Here in Jamaica, our clients love Audi and our stock is a hot commodity. The demand is fast and furious and we simply can’t get them here quickly enough. There is a waiting list!” Audi Brand Manager Anthony Desnoes concurred with Collman stating, “Consumers worldwide are clearly rewarding Audi for its superior vehicles by propelling the brand to the top of the luxury vehicle market. The Audi plants are in constant production mode working to fulfill the global demand” said Desnoes. “At ATL Autohaus, we have several Audi models on pre-order including Q5 and Q7 SUV’s as well as the new A6 sedan, a car we’re expecting great things from. The stunning new Audi A7 Sportback and the most technologically advanced vehicle Audi has ever produced - the new A8 model - are both here. I think it says a lot that the most successful people, the kind of people who could drive any car in the world are choosing to drive an Audi.” Indeed, customers worldwide have refused to settle for anything less than the four ringed German brand with notable international celebrities including Kevin Costner, Seal, Johnny Depp, Ben Affleck, models Gisele Bündchen and Sienna Miller, Hugh Grant, David Bowie, car enthusiast David Hasselhoff, and the indomitable new Mr. Bond - Daniel Craig, all sporting Audis. Available exclusively at ATL Autohaus - Jamaica’s authorized Audi dealership, customers may whet their Audi appetites with detailed tours as well as scheduled test drives with any of the available models. While special orders can always be made and customers can specify the types of inclusions and colour they would like on their new Audi the current stock offerings have been specified to suit varying customer requirements. Amongst them are the new A1, the A3, A4 and A5, the new Audi A6, A7 and A8 and of course the dynamic SUVs the Q5 and the Q7. A look ahead to early 2012 sees the arrival of the highly anticipated, newly developed Audi Q3. Demand is such that official mid-year sales tables show Audi on a sharp upward sales curve, maintaining its record-breaking performance for this year, and surpassing Mercedes Benz locally by 14 percent. This represents an impressive milestone for Audi – an unprecedented feat for the brand in local market competition.

The All New Audi A6 Audi is once again setting the standards in the full-size class with the new seventh-generation A6. With a broad portfolio of innovations and a lightweight body featuring numerous aluminum components, this new sedan is destined to write the next chapter of the A6 success story.

Body and design

The design of the A6 exudes athleticism and elegance. The sedan is over 16 feet long and six wide, but at less than five feet tall offer the sportiest proportions in its class. The long hood, the low, taut roofline and the distinctive lines on the flanks create a dynamic overall impression. Up front, optional LED headlights underscore the distinctive appearance. Thanks to an intelligent composite construction concept, the body is extremely lightweight, rigid and safe. Its numerous aluminum and hightech steels reduce its weight by roughly 30 kilograms from its predecessor, making the body, the backbone, of a consistent lightweight design concept. Depending on the version, the new business sedan is much lighter than the previous model. Audi, the pioneer of lightweight design, has once again reversed the weight spiral and thus established new standards. The body offers additional advantages too. Modern materials and construction methods provide for a very low interior noise level. The precise matching of all components and systematic hydraulic damping in the axle and drivetrain bearings provide excellent vibration comfort.

Interior

The spacious interior of the new Audi A6 takes up the sinewy style of the exterior design. Its salient element is the “wraparound” – a decorative inlay encircling the driver and the front-seat passenger. The elegant face of the instrument panel emphasizes the tension of the cockpit. Every interior detail documents the care with which Audi builds cars. All materials, including “Beaufort oak,” an innovative layered wood veneer to be introduced later, are carefully selected and processed. The front seats are available with optional ventilation and massage functions. The ambient lighting or the interior lighting package accent the interior with tiny highlights.

The new Audi A6 features the intuitive ergonomics concept that characterizes all of the brand’s models. An efficient deluxe automatic

air conditioning system and the MMI radio advanced control system come standard. The MMI navigation plus system with MMI touch is available as an option. Many features of the hard drive navigation system can be controlled via the touchpad. Audi offers an optional head-up display that projects important information onto the windshield.

Chassis

Drivetrain

The Audi drive select driving dynamics system comes standard with all engine variants. Audi can also deliver the comfortable adaptive air suspension with variable damping on request. The optional dynamic steering will be available somewhat later.

Audi Jamaica offers the new A6 with powerful and highly efficient V6 (super charged) engines. These gasoline engines produce between 204 hp and 300 hp. All engines use key technologies from Audi’s modular efficiency platform – the innovative thermal management, the start-stop system and the recuperation system. Compared to the previous model, fuel consumption has been reduced by as much as 21 percent – a top mark in its class.

The engines:

• 2.8 FSI and 2.8 FSI quattro with 204 hp • 3.0 TFSI quattro with 300 hp Audi offers the new A6 with a wide range of drivetrains depending on the engine. The continuously variable multitronic and - new in this model line - the sporty seven-speed S tronic. With their wide gear spread and low internal friction, all engines make major contributions to efficiency. Power is delivered to either the front or all four wheels, depending on the engine. The latest evolution of the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system features a crown-gear center differential and torque vectoring for superior traction, stability and dynamics. Models featuring the top engines will be available somewhat later with the sport differential, which actively distributes the power between the rear wheels.

The chassis of the new A6 combines superior comfort with sporty precision. Its links are made of aluminum; the power steering features a new electromechanical drive for high efficiency. The big sedan rolls on wheels measuring between 16 and 20 inches in diameter, behind which are powerful brakes.

Equipment and trim

Topping the line of hi-fi options is the high-quality Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System. The chassis of the A6 is based on a fourlink front suspension and trapezoidallink rear suspension. The optional adaptive air suspension enables the driver to switch among four settings to vary the adaptive dampers’ performance and characteristics. ATL Autohaus Audi Senior Sales Consultant, Etus Collman visited Germany earlier this year to test drive the new A6. When asked to tell us what most impressed him about the new A6, Collman raved about the interior design and styling, the full LED lights and smooth S-tronic transmission – shifting is quick and precise. Yet still, he felt that the features which created the most awe were the adaptive cruise control and the head-up display which is projected onto the windshield of the car.

The new Audi A6 is highly anticipated in Jamaica and is likely to be the saloon car favourite of corporate executives and distinguished professionals.

Seven generations of the Volkswagen Passat and we can count this generation as the best yet! qualities and lives up to its reputation in refined, comfortable interiors and with premium features such as the touch file touch (TFT), touch screen entertainment system with stereo, six-disc CD changer and 42 station memory.

Safety

The previous Passat model already attained an impressive 5 stars in Euro-NCAP crash testing. In the new model, the Volkswagen experts have beefed up the safety vices, by adding features such as seatbelt fastening detection for the rear seats, Crash Optimized front end, which is integrated in the front structure of the Passat to absorb and minimize collision energy. An Intelligent Crash Response System is also integrated - with you in mind, in the event of a crash the doors are unlocked, the fuel pump disengaged and the hazard lights comes on.

Subtle but by no means shy - this car is extremely quiet. The reason? Heavy insulation materials, and new acoustic film have been integrated in the dashboard, doors and front windscreen and work to filter exterior and engine noises. .

Comfort and Quality

The 2011 Passat offers even more luxury than other vehicles in its class, having improved the material and finishes in its seating, door trims and ambient lighting. Tips To Unlock His Inner Gentleman By Laura Cotton My friend Kelly says she loves to travel with me. Why? I assumed for my witty conversation. Nope. It’s because I can always get someone to help us with our carry-on luggage. “I can never get anyone to help me!” she claims. “And Laura can walk down the aisle and in two seconds have a man offer to lift her bag and put it in the overhead.” I told her, as I’ll tell you, most men want to display kind gestures but are unsure if such offers would be welcomed. And I believe that women, like Kelly, forget they can request such respectful behavior and have every right to do so! Here are 7 keys that can help unlock your man’s inner gentleman:

1

Be approachable: Make eye contact and smile Recently on a flight as I walked towards my row, I saw a man sitting nearby, made eye contact with him and softly smiled. After placing my purse in my seat, and before I made a motion towards my roller bag, this gentleman quickly jumped up and offered to help. “Thank you so much,” I said as I stepped aside so he could perform the good deed. People generally gravitate to people who are approachable. Make eye contact and smile. If that doesn’t work, go to the next tip … ask.

2

Ask in the moment: Let him know when it’s appropriate Some men are afraid to offer or don’t think to offer because no one has taught them about polite gestures. And then there are some men who simply don’t recognize the opportunities when they arise. So what to do then? Simple. Ask. I’ve never seen a man decline.

3

Tell him: Don’t expect him to read your mind

If you could give your man a superhero power it likely would be that he could read your mind, but … alas … he’s no superhero. But you can help him with some super-impressive powers by telling him what you would like him to do – open the door for your, introduce you when you meet his colleagues on the street, eat with his mouth closed. You know what you want. Tell him.

Give him time: Let him recognize the opportunity When you reach a door, don’t just plow right through it … hesitate a few seconds. Give your companion a chance to be nice. Give him a moment to recognize an opportunity to show how much he respects you and open it for you. How can he show you he knows what to do unless you give him a chance to do it without verbal prompting?

5

Say thank you: Let him know you appreciate it There are few things more powerful than positive reinforcement. Say thank you when he offers you a compliment. Tell him how much you appreciate it when he walks you to your car. If he knows you welcome such gestures, he will most likely do them again.

6

Let him repeat: Practice makes perfect So you got him to get your drinks at the bar during your last outing … high five! Now, the next time you go out, let him offer again before you make a beeline to the bartender. Practice makes perfect, ladies.

7

Do unto others: Be as polite as you want HIM to be This one is the kicker. Oh … that golden rule: “Do unto other as you would have them do unto you.” People most often reflect the treatment they are given. It’s the whole good-goes-around theory. If you want him to say please and thank you, say it yourself. If you want him to give you compliments, let him know he smells nice, or looks handsome or keeps his car immaculately clean. As the cherry on top, here’s wisdom from the queen of etiquette, Emily Post. “The cardinal principle of etiquette is thoughtfulness and the guiding rule of thoughtfulness is the Golden Rule. If you always do unto others as you would have done unto you, it is likely that you will never offend, bore or intrude, and that your actions will be courteous and indeed thoughtful.” Laura Cotton sees the world as full of sunshine and smiles with a few pearls in need of polish. A licensed etiquette trainer, she spreads her good word through her Pearl Strategies image development workshops and seminars. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia and lives in Trinidad & Tobago. Infants driven by primal curiosity, playfully explore the universe around them which in turn helps to shape their inner core and psyche. Adults are no different at all. For us, play continues to be an important means in which to enrich us. Intimacy. Inner peace. Mind/body integration. Sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and some of Long Island's wealthiest real estate, this region has been long revered as an ideal escape, thanks to its quaint village appeal and close ocean proximity. BAHAMAS: There are many ways to experience Nassau. Some of us are too busy to take a week or more of vacation to go explore a destination. Sometimes we’re just looking for a ‘Weekend Getaway’ that affords us an opportunity to recharge our batteries to face the next week. But the notion of ‘Weekend Getaway’ means different things to different folks. Here are three ideal options for three different budgets to get your recharge going in the Bahamas.

If you’re looking for ‘luxe or uber luxe’ this is definitely not going to be your cup of tea. But the hotel is clean, the rooms have been recently been upgraded and the staff we encountered were all extremely helpful and engaging. SHERATON

Sheraton 800-325-3535 starwoodhotels.com/sheraton

PRICE VALUE

The Sheraton is a lovely hotel. The lobby is rather modern (aka cold) but the staff are extraordinarily friendly. The service here from check-in to meals and general conversation was extremely good. The breakfast buffet (my favorite meal of the day) deserves special mention for the wide range of options. From steak to pancakes, eggs benedict to liver (yuk!) and an impressive array of pastries this was certainly a great place to start the date. The rooms are very well appointed and the view overlooking the pool and beyond to the beach was spectacular. Definitely somewhere I would stay with my family.

THE COVE 888-877-7525 atlantis.com

PRICE VALUE

The Cove is on the Atlantis “compound” which is a truly impressive place. I have travelled around the Caribbean and yet to encounter a place with as much going on or to do than Atlantis. The Cover is one of their high-end offerings. The physical structure is very impressive; they’re going for a very chic feel and from the entrance to the décor in the common area, I would have to say it works. I was disappointed with the service at times. While there were some folks who were highly engaged and genuinely seemed to care there appeared to be a pervasive ‘that’s not my problem’ that I encountered on more than a couple of occasions. Given my short stay that’s not a good sign. All was not lost, however, as I had an absolutely fantastic meal at Café Martinique.

ESCAPE Graycliff

Simply Better By Brenda Fine It’s not often we mere mortals are allowed to peek behind-the-scenes of a five-star restaurant. Usually all the culinary magic takes place out of sight, behind those swinging doors, and we remain unaware of all the back-of-the-house drama until the meal arrives at our table, presented with a flourish and a triumphant “Voila!” But at Graycliff (the haute cuisine mecca of Nassau), it’s possible not only to enjoy gourmet meals, but also to sign on for a cooking session with Chef Elijah Bowe. While thoroughly entertaining, the experience will ensure you master some of the culinary tricks of the trade. But more on that later. First, you’ll want to experience the pleasures of being a guest in the restaurant. Graycliff is renowned for its traditional and formal style. The dining room is set like a jewel within a glass-enclosed porch, overlooking the gardens. The walls are tinted in flattering hues of dusty rose. Tables are draped in crisp linen. Silverware and crystal gleam in the soft candle light from flickering hurricane lamps. The mood is refined, yet festive, as guests feast on such temptations as real Italian risotto, foie gras poêlé with dates and caramelized apples in calvados, and Bouillabaisse a la Bahamien et Rouille. But Graycliff is much more than just a five-star restaurant. The décor resembles an English country house. South Beach it isn’t; not a minimalist element in sight. Every chair and sofa is cozy, upholstered, slightly shabby chic and infinitely inviting - sort of like grandma’s house. Graycliff is, in fact, impressively historic, dating back to the 18th century when the original building (which had served as a pirate hideout and headquarters for the invading American Navy) was turned into Nassau’s first Inn. Subsequent scenarios for this venerable building included a hideaway for Al Capone’s prohibition mob, a private residence for a family of wintering snowbirds and finally as a residence of British nobility. But today, Graycliff’s a family affair, owned and operated by two generations of the Garzaroli family. Enrico and Anna Maria run the multi-faceted establishment, while son Paolo is in charge of the cigar enterprise and daughter Roberta directs the marketing function for the entire company. The original 250-year-old Georgian mansion has today grown to encompass not only a five-star restaurant, but also a duo of boutique hotels (the Graycliff Hotel and the Graycliff Cigar Company Hotel) with some 20 beautiful guest

rooms, suites and stand-alone cottages, two pools set within lush tropical gardens, two restaurants, an award-winning wine cellar boasting more than 250,000 bottles and, of course, those unique custom-made cigars for which Graycliff is also famous. Graycliff is light years removed from the urban hubbub of downtown Nassau’s cruise ship dock, commercial straw market and the crush of tourists jostling to grab one last souvenir before heading home. Here, comfortably off the tourist track, you can take a deep breath, relax and let yourself slip into another dimension of Bahamian lifestyle, one that has been charming

MASTER

Stepping onto the high-tech gleaming world of Chef Elijah Bowe is a bit like flashing an all-access pass at a U2 concert --- it’s a bit intimidating, but packs a huge WOW factor. As you enter his state-of-the-art kitchen, a space that has been custom-designed for these classes, he’s standing behind the crown jewel of the operation; the custom-designed Moltini stove. Aa sleek, high-tech Italian beauty the Moltini comes with a ‘brain’and capable of performing such handy tasks shutting itself off lowering the heat under a pan, and refilling a pot if the water has boiled off. Chef Bowe also selects various gems from his own stash of culinary feats. For instance, he can turn a common Nassau grouper into a gourmet feast. And he can also teach even an all-thumbs novice how to master this same feast. Classes at Chef Bowe’s Culinary Academy can cover all sorts of dishes --- how to make an authentic island-style conch chowder, a fabulous lobster salad artfully showcased within its own shell or how to turn a common Nassau grouper into a gourmet feast. I was especially thrilled to observe and participate in the preparation (and, of course, the eating) of the classic Bahamian breakfast dish of ‘boiled fish and grits’. Chef started by skinning a gigantic grouper, explaining that “you can’t just scale a grouper, the

Chef – Master Class

scales are too small.” While he deftly performed this skinning task, I set to work prepping the other elements of the dish: the “trinity” of celery, onions, and potatoes. Classic ‘boil fish’ traditionally includes pretty much every part of the fish, so into the pot went the bones, head and tail - the whole deal. (Chef Bowe has perfected another dish ‘Grouper Cheeks with Tomato Compote’ that actually focuses on fish cheeks. Fish cheeks! Who

Meanwhile, the brainy Moltini stove has automatically filled a pot with just the right amount of water, into which we’ve zested both lime and lemon, added salt and pepper and all those prepped veggies along with the fish filets. Soon the most wonderful aroma begins to waft across the kitchen. Yum! While the soup simmers, it’s time to prepare the grits. Only the authentic Jimmy Dean brand will do for Chef Bowe, which he then lavishes with copious amounts of butter. And suddenly, everything comes together at once. Plate (or bowl) it all, grab a spoon and dig in to one of the most delicious breakfasts ever! Corn flakes will never be the same after this.

LIFESTYLE [ Haiti One Year On ]

By Heike Wollenberger

M

y heart won’t let you go - a photographer’s view of haiti’ is a riCh visual portrait of haiti aCross two separate natural disasters, hurriCane ike in september 2008 and the earthquake of January 2010. pulitzer prize winning photographer, patriCk farrell, Collaborated with gallery owner max pierre to put this CritiCal body of work on display at pierre’s ae distriCt gallery in miami from april 6 to may 28. Farrell’s images are vibrant, stunning and honest. While they cover a range of emotions, they also serve to reinforce some core human values and an incredible resilience which has seen the Haitian population, if not thrive, at least endure, in the face of incredible adversity. Farrel and Pierre saw the exhibition as an opportunity through photographs; to highlight the strength, perseverance and enduring hope of the Haitian people. They also embraced the opportunity to raise the level of awareness of Haiti to the outside world at what continues to be a difficult time in the Caribbean island for so many of its people. Farrell’s deep admiration for the strong spirit of the Haitian people is captured through a series of images that on one level are sad and shocking, yet on another level, manage to inspire and captivate. These images, taken after Hurricane Ike in 2008 and the earthquake of 2010, are overwhelming, spellbinding, haunting, impressive and touching. The images tell rich stories; stories that bring tears to your eyes and in some instance a smile to your soul. Farrell’s award winning image titled ‘Angel’, tells the story of a father, Frantz Samedi, whose daughter, Tamasha Jean, had died in Hurricane Ike. Upon seeing Farrell, Samedi insisted that he take his daughter’s photograph but not before he was able to put her in a pretty dress and prepared her for a proper burial...lest she be remembered for anything less than what he visualized. As fate would have it the police, making a trip to the morgue, insisted that they take his daughter’s body then and there which did not allow for the father to put her into her pretty dress. At the core of this tragic story, with all the muddy waters and dirty visuals is the purity of this father’s last, unfulfilled wish for his deceased daughter. It is the juxtaposition of tragedy and human dignity that make the stories told through Farrell’s images so penetrating – they manage to both shock and inspire. At the time Farrell was happy that the award helped to refocus global attention on Haiti, saying that it “…refocused the spotlight on Haiti, getting attention from all over the world.” The award also

tore at Farrell as he questioned the value of his role “I still to this day feel like, is photography all I could have done? And I get all this success from it? That’s a weird feeling, it’s a horrible feeling and it keeps you awake at night.” Some of Farrell’s images may seem tough, gruesome even, but they depict the truth. News stories come and go and eventually end up on the backburner. Patrick Farrell and Max Pierre do not want Haiti to be forgotten over the next news story. “We wanted to let them know that Haiti is still in turmoil. It is still really bad out there and people still need help.” Patrick Farrell seems almost relieved of a burden when he mentions the exhibition. He and his wife chose the title “My Heart Won’t let You Go” because as he says, “Haiti became this place I had gone to and could not forget. I feel this responsibility. Once you are touched by Haiti it won’t let you go.” •

Farrell’s deep admiration for the strong spirit of the Haitian people is captured through a series of images that on one level are sad and shocking, yet on another level, manage to inspire and captivate. 80

Emerald Bay Emerald Bay Excellence

EXCELLENCE By Douglas Gordon

S

andals Emerald Bay unequivocally debunks any preconceived notion that “all-inclusive” inherently means shortcuts or cheap substitutes. And while there may be those chains who still pursue that model, the Caribbean resort chain is certainly putting its money where its proverbial mouth is to deliver a first class experience by any definition. It would have to be said that this property starts off with a tremendous advantage. The location is, in a word, simply breathtaking. It really is quite difficult not to break out into a wide grin when you pass through the gorgeous lobby, stroll past the massive signature pool (measuring a whopping half an acre) and venture onto the white sandy beaches and into the turquoise waters that border this resort. I mean, seriously, notwithstanding whatever realities await you back home, the mere fact that you could find yourself in this place means that something, somewhere must be ‘going right’ in your life. It is remarkable to think that this homegrown, Caribbean brand has taken over a property that no lesser than ‘the’ Four Seasons had tried and failed to make a success since opening their doors

82

in 2004. So what precisely is “wrong” with the property one might ask? With over US$20 Million spent in renovations since they took over in November 2009, exactly nothing as far as my eyes could see. From the beautiful, exquisitely appointed lobby, to the charming, cozy and authentic English Pub (playfully named The Drunken Duck) which was built, disassembled and transported from the UK and then reassembled by the same crew that built it on site, little or no expense has been spared in getting this property Sandals-ized. There are several dining options ranging from the elegant décor and Italian cuisine of Il Cielo to the comfortable and relaxed vibe of Dino’s tasty wood-fired oven pizzas. I can well imagine some arrogant Four Seasons stalwarts indignant that this property is now part of the chain who’s tagline boasts ‘the most luxury inclusions’ but as you roam the grounds, retire to your room, or luxuriate along the beach, it is clear that little expense has been spared. The décor boasts muted colours, luxurious woods and finishes and incredibly comfortable beds. Even the carefully manicured grounds attest to the care and attention that are paid to the ‘little details’.

Season

is Around the Corner!

OCEAN Style is showcasing the GOOD life from red carpets to celebrity interviews, restaurants, spas and resorts in: So while you could, theoretically, luxuriate in your room or sit by any of the 3-4 pools scattered around the property (including the “quiet pool” - perfect if you have a particularly garrulous plus 1) the sheer beauty of the location demands that you get out and about. I took an Island Routes speedboat tour around the Exumas which was great fun. I am really not one for ‘structured outings’ but the father and son crew was extremely personable and I quite enjoyed my tour-cum Bahamas history lesson! At one point it was truly heroic when he leapt off the boat and re-emerged with a gorgeous starfish in his hands, although he seemed to ignore me when I suggested he do the same with the sting ray that was swimming nearby, go figure! Quite remarkable was the fact that you could actually, in a depth over his standing height, see all the way down to the bottom of the ocean floor well enough to recognize a starfish. I must say I never thought I could be impressed by coconut trees. While many of us scratch our heads about what the future holds in these uncertain economic times, we ventured upon an island whose sole purpose is to grow coconut trees for the well-heeled who will be building their palatial (Exuma) getaway homes » on yet another island; and I thought that ordering that fancy Sake at Sushi Samba

was over-indulgent! These ‘economically challenged’ souls had apparently ‘pooled’ their resources to purchase the Coconut Tree island and then had these trees brought in and planted.....next I will hear that the coconut water is being sold as ‘organic’! As beautiful a property as this is, I was taken aback by the Greg Norman golf course. Aside from being picture perfect, and I should emphasize you might never see a more beautiful golf course, it is simply not for the faint of heart. I am not a particularly good golfer except for the practice swing at the tee box, at which I excel, but this course as picturesque as it may be, is also highly amusing in a cynical way. I mean no offense to Greg Norman but I would pay to watch him play this course and get par. Not only are some of the holes incredibly long but when you factor in the wind and the size of the various landing areas you would have to walk with about

84

a case of balls just to finish a round (I played 9 holes - trust me); I suppose if you’re selling balls in the gift shop this is not such a terrible downside. Golf score notwithstanding, I could see myself getting hooked on the course. I mean the back nine was stunning... the vistas, and depending on the tide, time of day and the wind watching the spray drift across the course as the ocean crashes into the rocks below...priceless. Sandals have outdone themselves with this property and for anyone with a smidgen of cynicism about what an all-inclusive is and is not…..try this bona fide luxury property - you just may find you leave with a completely difference sense of quality and value. Island S t y l e Spicy Tuna Fritters

I

am an island girl-born, bred and fed. We island people can be… a little ‘show-off’ about our heritage and why wouldn’t we be? We grew up on islands bordered by beautiful beaches in the great tropical climate of the Caribbean. We get up to the sun almost daily and revere rain because both are essential to life and growth, and good food. We have plenty of that too, we island folks, love good food.

For us, good food is a necessary ingredient for good times. Be sure the food is good at your wedding or funeral or you will never hear the end of it. We love fellowship. We gather together telling stories and jesting with each other in wholesome fun. We are storytellers. We will create any excuse to hold a lime - or as you may call it, a party.

How to cook Ingredients 1/4 cup milled flaxseed (I grind our own from the whole ones and store in ziploc sandwich bags in the fridge as shown), 1 cup flour, 1 cup Stir Fry Spring Roll Filling,* 1/3 cup canned tuna, 2tsp baking powder, salt and pepper, slices of scotch bonnet peppers, thinly sliced scallion/green onions, 1 1/4 cup water, 2 sprigs of fresh or frozen thyme and oil for frying.

*Method: Stir Fry Spring Roll Filling Shred ¼ small cabbage and 1 carrot with ½ small bell pepper. Heat oil and add chopped ginger, scallions and shredded vegetables, stirring constantly. Taste. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cover and reduce heat for about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool.

Method: Spicy Tuna Fritters Combine all ingredients except the oil in a mixing bowl. The batter should be slightly salty to mimic the saltiness of saltfish fritters. Heat your oil. Using two tablespoons, spoon your batter in hot oil. You will scoop the batter in one spoon and use the other spoon to scoop it out into the pan. This will help you to get equal sized fritters. Make certain the oil is not too hot or they will burn but if it too cold, the batter will soak up all the oil. Turn when the sides turn golden brown. Repeat in as many batches as needed to fry all the batter. Garnish with scallions and serve hot or cold. You can make this dish vegetarian/vegan by leaving out the tuna, as it will be just as good!

Heavy food is optional but drinks and savoury bites are a must. Want to recreate the essence of the Caribbean in your home? There is no better way than with good food, some Caribbean rum, and reggae and soca pumping in the background. Just be sure to call over some friends to share the experience. Here is a tasty recipe for a salty treat that rings true to the multi-cultural heritage of the Caribbean and creates a big bang with a small buck. It is perfect for canapés or even for a meal and is so easy that you will have a hard time keeping your fingers out of the platter while you sip and laugh your belly full. These Spicy Tuna Fritters are inspired by Saltfish Fritters, or Stamp and Go, which are popular in the Caribbean. Traditionally, it is made with salted cod but I decided on a more accessible alternative with a more nutritional value and added fibre with vegetables and flaxmeal. TIPS FOR ETERNAL PASSION

1

Think about that for a moment that the word that has become associated with sex, pleasure, relationships, hobbies and our professions truly in its original meaning speaks to suffering. Let’s break that down for a bit, the immensity and beauty of that connotation; that to have true passion would suggest a suffering of sorts, endurance and indeed the needed passion to continue. If you thought that this article would suggest a variety of sexual positions, toys, tricks or tips for the bedroom, then you were wrong, and it would be best that you took up practicing the Kama Sutra.....very carefully (some of those positions are deadly, man). Truly this article seeks to root out a few things couples can do together to ensure the endurance of their relationship, despite the ‘suffering’ of life. Seizing the true essence of the word ‘passion’ and shaping it to your existence, means forgetting for a minute your emails, the fact that you forgot to tweet what you ate today, and not sending a Blackberry Message to your lover across the room instead of simply calling their name. 102

For this one I must stand on a soap box for a minute and say, STEP AWAY FROM THE BLACKBERRY!!! Put your phone on silent, not vibrate, and spend the day with your partner and just chill! Order some food, select two DVDs, one that each or both of you will enjoy, and appreciate the day. Cherish this alone time with your spouse. This shows respect for your partner, that they would appreciate and others will recognise.

COMMUNICATE: BE FRIENDS!

By: Anika Repole Wilson

‘Passion’ is derived from the ancient Greek word: paskho which means to suffer.

DO NOTHING

Freshen that breath and lay one on your partner. Don’t allow kissing to only fall in the category of foreplay, kiss each other often. It doesn’t have to be a long passionate kiss each time but kissing is an extension of passion that can show the ‘suffering’ endured, or to be endured, when you are without that special someone.

In the technological age in which we live, there truly is no excuse for not keeping in touch. Here is where it is absolutely necessary to use your phone and texting capabilities. Throughout the day, send your lover a message just to let them know you’re thinking about them. Don’t limit this to texting, but maybe purchase some nice stationery or even use a piece of scrap paper and leave them a little random note somewhere. It doesn’t have to be a Shakespearian sonnet, just a simple ‘miss you’ is sufficient.

‘Keeping in touch’ is merely written foreplay for actual touch. Did you know that touching someone actually releases the hormone oxytocin into our systems? Oxycotin is a natural ‘feel good’ chemical that aids in bonding and attachment, it’s the body’s way of saying “This feels nice and I want more”.

Spending time with each other in the kitchen can be a fun activity. It’s a multifunctional activity that satisfies the tummy, the mind and the heart all at once! Cooking adds a special dimension to bonding and passion, as the two of you must work as a team to achieve a task. Breakfast in bed, shouldn’t be limited to special occasions. If you know your partner had a long night at the office, make the effort, wake up early and bring them a meal in bed. It’s a great way to start the day and will keep those natural feel good chemicals flowing!

For many of us who have incredibly busy lifestyles, it is important to make the intimate time count! Making love is not limited to passionate sex; it involves taking the time to appreciate your partner’s body. Making love means satisfying the five senses before satisfying the sexual appetite, and the best thing is it can be done in public. Look deeply into your lover’s eyes, taste your partner’s lips and kiss, take in their scent. Whisper your thoughts into an ear and touch and hold each other....then take it to the bedroom!

Talk with each other about your issues, don’t let them fester and add to the suffering of life. Speak up, speak honestly, but be respectful. Too often honesty is confused with being blunt, which can do more harm than good. Respect each other and be mindful of emotions. Fostering a friendship with your lover is a great way to long term success. Be spontaneous, break out your big kid, be honest with each other and simply have a conversation. Sometimes one doesn’t need to plan things out; go for a long drive to the country one day just for lunch. Play a board game together; games and long drives are a great way to keep a friendship solid. Want to know the secret to true passion? Find it out for yourself! Really it all boils down to each individual’s likes and dislikes. But what has been tried and tested is that communicating openly and respectfully has great results. If there is a problem in a relationship, it’s safe to say that the problem lies with communication. So get the ball rolling, become friends and talk, because the Greeks understood what we have skewed with our individual perceptions that; true passion, must endure suffering.
