GET AMONGST this stunning and rare show-worthy 47 Chevrolet Coupe and hitch a ride in Jenna’s Glorious Impala to the awesome Capital Rodders Horsepower Show and Swap Meet.

There has been a heap of events happening up and down the country from swap meets and indoor shows to club runs all over the show.

I have to say, it is so awesome to be out there getting amongst it all again! Catching all the new builds and seeing what everyone has been up to in their caves is just awesome!

So, in this issue we have massive coverage of the awesome capital Rodders Horsepower show and swap meet in Wellington. What an amazing spot that is for a show like this. The Old buildings and huge established trees made for an amazing back drop for photographing the cars.

We also have fantastic coverage from Masterton with Cloudy’s take covering the awesome Outlaw 71 Drag cars and Door slammers at the drag strip there. The drag scene will be a bit quiet over the winter months, but we have a back log of material in our library to catch up on if you feel the need for speed.

66 IMPALA JENNA STROUD’S Miss 66 glorious

I’m not sure how many years ago that was now, but Jenna and her Impala have been rocking around the car show scene for years and we finally got to photograph MISS 66 properly at Beach Hop last year. It’s easy to see the love Jenna has for these big ole American rides. The instant smile when she sits behind that steering wheel gives it away for sure.

the bag here. A right-hand drive, full restoration with the factory 283ci Turbo Fire engine still in the bay, reupholstered custom interior and a glorious red paint finish to top it all off matching up the custom interior, was certainly worth hunting.

I’ve always liked the oldscool Impala’s. The long sleek bodies with sharp swage lines and the rear quarters throwing a hint back to the wing era with an accentuated bull nose swage. The roof lines seaming low due to the big deep guards taking away its full height. So when you see one with its bonnet up on the side of the road, you just have to stop to offer assistance.

MISS 66 is Jenna’s first classic car, but she is no stranger to the classic car scene. Having been raised around these cars as a kid with her dad, brother and uncles all into the scene, the rumble of a V8 fully entrenched itself into her mindset for sure.

Jenna’s owned a pretty cool selection of cars over the years, but the desire for an Impala was too strong to be ignored, so the hunt was on.

What seemed to be a hard hunt has certainly scored her a model out of

The Glorious Red paint is truly amazing with the changing light and simply glows with the big 20 inch chrome wheels. The combination fully stepping it into the custom and show scene, yet totally ready to just hit the road and go cruising /partying with mates.

Thanks to the upgraded brakes, power steering and twin exhaust, this isn’t just a show piece!

The subs and amps in the boot feeding the sounds to the speakers up front providing the party, but only as a change from the awesome rumbling V8 sound from the twin exhaust system.

This is what I love about the car scene. The funny way you bump into people and instantly become friends, thanks to our love of old cars that leave us stranded on the side of the road.

These Fourth Generation Impala’s were like the junior Cadillac of the day. With a roomy interior and luxury trim of the time, they were an extremely popular automobile. With very little upgrades for the generation from 1965 through to 1970, the subtle upgrades were really only noticed by the tail-light changes giving the build year away.

The chrome belt-line trims were added to these 66 models due to customer complaints about parking lot door dings in the smooth panels of the earlier models, so even back then, these big-bodied cars were hard to park anywhere but definitely worth owning anyway!

Jenna and MISS 66 are simply as one now after all these years, so even sitting on the side of the road with a bonnet up wouldn’t even phase this girl from her beloved 66!

BLAST FROM THE PAST AS OUTLAWS RIDE AGAIN Cloudy’s Take

Loud, fast and unpredictable are three adjectives that attach themselves with ease to the Outlaw 71 class.

While Outlaw 71 is a “new” class, old racing heads will experience a touch of dejavu when watching them as the class is based on traditional black belt supercharged cars.

The name stems from the Supercharged Outlaws and is open to cars running any belt-drive roots or screw-type supercharger, typically known as “71” series of superchargers. These conventional superchargers now have their own class thanks to Masterton Motorplex commentator Gavin Doughty and Todd Aitken from Maxxed Out Racing who had talked about creating such a class for some time.

Belt-driven Supercharged Outlaws had once been the norm, Gavin says, but as time went on alternative forms of superchargers (supercharging) was introduced such as turbo, pro-charger, nitrous oxide and nitromethane. This appeared to affect the base of the group and the development of a second sanctioning body in New Zealand did not appear to help the cause. As time passed, the race fields of this group became smaller and split throughout the country but they had their own unique charm that Gavin and Todd felt deserved a revival.

Going into the 2022/23 season the series will be in its 5th season of racing and the field of cars is growing every year, as last season the field of registered cars rose to a whopping 27 cars. Unfortunately Covid upset everybody’s plans and the

field dwindled, otherwise that would have been an outstanding race season.

Over the past four seasons, I have had the pleasure of hanging out and filming these critters as we have travelled the country from Meremere to Christchurch and man, it is sooo much fun. The racing is tight, the friendship, camaraderie and banter is something you won’t find anywhere else. With a range of cars stemming from Front Engine Dragsters, Door Cars, Rear Engine Dragsters, Funny cars and Altered’s, there’s a car style for everyone and the fans love it that they get to see their favourite car back every round win or lose as we run a racer return bracket. Moving forward into the 2022/23 seasons we are excited that the interest is growing even more with new cars being built and they are wanting to join us in the series. One to watch out for and not to miss will be the Mountshop Mayhem at the Masterton meeting.

This meeting will see in excess of 32 Blown Methanol Supercharged cars running as it will be the ultimate showdown between the Wild Bunch and OutLaw 71 cars. This will be epic, and with two years in the making, don’t miss this one!

OutLaw 71 started off as a series, but as we have moved through the four years of racing we have become more of a show in the fans eyes. This is great and

helps us to grow the sport and put bums on seats. After all, if you don’t have the fans coming to see you, the sport will eventually die. Every meeting we run our own brackets and once we have worked our way through the rounds 1st, 2nd and 3rd gain points which go towards their points count for the season. Every car that enters or turns up will receive attendance money and points. Every Racers points are added up at the end of the season and the racer with the highest amount of points takes home the “Masters Trophy” and is crowned the “OutLaw 71 Master” for that season.

So that’s the OutLaw 71 series, it’s great for the sport, it’s great for the fans and it’s great for the teams and owners alike. The Wild Bunch critters, it’s just good old Drag Racing at its best. Support your sport as it’s not easy these days to organise, race and run these meetings.

So be safe, keep it straight and don’t leave late.

Cheers

FLEETMASTER COUPE 1947 KEITH SAWYER’S Chevrolet

Here’s another stunning build from the Sawyer cave that is definitely a show-winning worthy ride!

Parked up next to Lisa’s 1930 Ford 5 window coupe and Keith’s classy looking 1969 Rally Sport / SS Camaro is this extremely rare 1947 Chevy Fleetmaster Coupe.

This is one of those stunningly cool rides that you just don’t see rolling around the streets very often.

Chevrolet built less than five thousand of these coupes after the war and from what we can tell, there is less than a handful in this country still on the road. Keith stumbled across this one while

working one day. It was looking like a full-on life sized jigsaw puzzle in a customers shed, but seeing the potential that was laying within the boxes of goodies and body shell, a deal was done and it was all transported back to Keith and Lisa’s cave to have the puzzle put back together again, but with a difference this time.

There really isn’t much on this beautiful build that hasn’t been modified, customed or simply finished to a showwinning standard.

The interior being full leather with custom seats and door trims sits beautifully with the era of the old-style gauges, original door handles and window winders.

The surround sound speakers are placed nicely into the trims to give the modern benefits of cruising for when the exhaust gates are closed for everyday cruising.

The boot is detailed in the same leather to complete the show detail with an LED lite Chevrolet symbol highlighting the build specs custom painted onto the spare wheel cover.

The curves in the side panel trims reflecting the flow of the body through to the interior cabin trim keeps the 47 styling intact as if built by Chevrolet in the era.

In true keeping of the 1940’s styling, the huge body curves and deep wheel arches allow for a descent set of rubbers under the guards with no flaring required for a modern set of wheels and sticky tyres to hang onto the road.

The huge aerodynamic bonnet molded across the top of the front fenders accentuating the flow of the body curves must have been a task to produce back in the day, but certainly makes these stylie automobiles a piece of auto-art for sure!

Under that bonnet, the show detailing has been tasked to not only look awesome, but to get this one and a half tonne coupe to jump and run like a cool Hot Rod should.

The factory six-cylinder engine no longer exists in here. This space now holds a small block Chevrolet V8 383ci engine being force feed by a B&M 174 Supercharger to keep it awake and ready at all times.

This is an awesome combination in a build like this. For cruising to shows no matter where - rain, hail or shine, the under-bonnet blower is fantastic for how this ride rolls.

Of course with forcing the free air in, it needs to come out. A twin three inch exhaust handles that job extremely well and when the gates are open to them pipes, the sound is awesome. Not to mention the extra performance.

Shirly from Shirly’s Kustom Car Painters was given the task of making this cool old ride stand out. Not that the massive curved body didn’t stand out by itself, but with Shirley laying coats of Electric Blue Pearl over those curves to capture the sun from every angle, this rod now glistens in the sunlight. From the show-winning 30 Coupe to the Classy 69 RS/SS Camaro in the cave, this build here is certainly at home in that circle.

Built to be driven, but to a show-winning standard, Keith can certainly be proud of getting this jigsaw puzzle back together. The next puzzle is already on the way to our shores though, so I can’t wait to climb over that one with the cameras.

HORSEPOWER DISPLAY Capital Rodders & Swap meet 2022

If you haven’t made it along to this awesome event held at the Trentham Racecourse before, then definitely scribble this down on your bucket list to GET AMONGST!

With so much going on around the country in the car scene, I have never actually managed to get along to this display before, but this year I made sure I did, and what an excellent call that was! Getting out of bed early on a dark Wellington winters sunday morning with a temperature of 2 degrees outside did actually seem a bit nuts at that very moment. Grabbing a hot coffee to warm the fingers and hopefully thaw the toes somehow made me think “what the”, but rolling up to the Trentham Racecourse to catch the sun rising over the old historic buildings and huge established trees

made for an amazing photo opportunity to capture the moments that make you say “damn, that’s cool”.

Capital Rodders have been running this awesome event for twelve years now at the Racecourse and what an amazing place to have an event like this.

With the Racecourse being established way back in 1906, the trees and buildings make for an amazing backdrop for the massive collection of olds-cool cars to roll in, park up and get amongst the day.

Everything from hot rods, street machines, pick-ups, bikes and classics rolled into this show, filling up the back fields under the trees to right around the front of the main pavilion building.

The centre court being set aside for the swap meet, trade stall and food area was a busy hive of activity with people coming and going, catching up with mates and wandering through to see what

goodies could be scored for the cave or current build.

A couple of awesome drag car start-ups stopped the crowd in their tracks though. The sound of a screaming alcohol feed V8 being music to the ears on a chilly sunday morning.

I’m not sure how, but that sound works like coffee I reckon!

It is awesome to see these swap meets still happening. The chance to clear the parts shelves that we all have in the cave, or stockpile some more parts that we thought we would never find.

From new goodies to decorate the cave to some very cool high-performance parts, there is always something for everyone at these events.

The variety of the rides rolling in bright and early was awesome to see. From the low-riders to customs and classics,

everything just seems to fit in perfectly amongst the grounds.

Wandering through it all was truly nostalgic and well worth getting out of bed early for.

Of course the hot-coffee caravan was kept pretty busy, but the day soon warmed up bringing even more cars out of the garages to get amongst it.

I’d seen a few photos of this event before so knew it was a goodie, but to finally make the trip down to capture it was definitely worthwhile. It is well worth a trip to Wellington if you are from outside the area. I honestly don’t think there would be another venue in NZ that fits as perfect as this one for our olds-cool rides. Capital Rodders is a pretty active club in the Wellington area with club events and cruises throughout the year, but this is definitely their main event for getting the public and other clubs along to get amongst the scene and enjoy a great day out.

Definitely scribble this one on your “to-do list”!
