Jump in here and catch the NZ Hot Rod Drag Racing Nationals. Then PARTY up at Beach Hop 2021. This months feature cars will take you right back to the 60’s and the 70’s with a Classy 69 Camaro and Wild Rammed T’bucket
WOW, it’s November already and we are into Issue 07 of this magazine. How cool is that!
The months have certainly been rocking by with everything not going on, but it is awesome to see the club events still happening with sunday cruises and garage raids. Even with all these rules around gatherings, it’s awesome to see the enthusiasm is still there to GET AMONGST!
So November is normally the kickoff month for all the summer events and runs but as you can see by all the postponements, you now have a bit more time to get your rides ready before we really kick into the show season. Don’t forget to get behind our awesome sponsors when you are buying new bits too. They certainly get behind our events so show some appreciation and give it back. It all makes the world go around. Mount Shop are back with us again this month. They get right behind our drag racing events so fully rip in there if you need anything in the auto section. They’re a super enthusiastic team in there!
So this month we have another huge issue for you. We’re covering the first couple of days at Beach Hop plus the NZ Hot Rod Drag Nationals held at Meremere
Dragway. This is a super cool event so definitely check out the article and make sure to check out the video as well to catch the real action.
Bay Rodders Tauranga do an amazing job running this and the Nostalgia Drags in the same weekend. I fully take my hat off to congratulate them with their efforts there! It is such an awesome weekend!
We’ve split Beach Hop into two issues as our coverage is way too big to show it all in one magazine!
The bonus with being digital is that we can bring you soo much more than any hard copy can.
With hundreds of photos for each event along with video coverage as well, there really is no bigger coverage out there for you to check out. Then you can decide if you need to get the event in your diary for next time! Now that has to be a double bonus!!
As for me, I’m loving going back through the photos and video compiling it for you all to check out!
There is soo much to capture, so I
probably seem a bit rushed when you see me roaring around with the cameras. It is supercool to go back through the photos and see what you all are actually building. Some of the detailing now is just awesome!
With so many cars at the shows now, I bet like me, most of you don’t get a chance to fully check out some of the builds, so going back through the photos and videos to actually be able to check out the detailing is fantastic.
There are some seriously cool cars out there that you just don’t see, apart from in here now! So I’m stoked be able to show the work off for other to see.
Definitely hit me up if you want to show your own build in here. I’ve been capturing some very cool rides lately with full-on photo shoots, so watch this space for those to be featured.
Anyway, back into it! Miles of smiles to be captured yet, so GET AMONGST!
Cheers all, see you out there!

69 CHEVY RS/SS CAMARO Rally Sport time
Aren’t these 69 Camaros a classy piece of engineering auto art!
There’s actually quite a variety of options with these Gen 1 Camaros.
Originally built back in 1967, the body moulds changed each year with the 69 having the extra swage lines over the front and rear wheel arches. This small change actually creates quite a difference in appearance from the 67 and 68 models.
Chevrolet had a huge range of options for all these models, so you could pretty much create your own styled muscle car. That’s a pretty cool option in the day really.
Keith’s model here is the RS with the SS options as well. The extra styling with the hidden headlights,
KEITH SAWYER’S
revised tail lights and reversing lights mounted under the rear bumper certainly give it that extra bit of class. The SS options of the chrome bonnet vents and SS badges step it up yet again.
The SS also brings on the 350 Chevy under that hood along with some extra chassis tricks to improve the handling and general driveability.
The interior also got a tickle-up with some cool centre mounted gauges and extra detailing.
Keith’s no stranger to spec’d up cars. Ever since I’ve known him, (far too many years to say HOW long) there has been something cool tucked away in the shed.
The current collection isn’t bad either. Next to this classy looking muscle car is his 1947 Chevrolet Coupe packing
a blown 350 Chevy in a similar colour and then a cool little Model A Coupe which we featured in Issue 03. Lisa’s “A Girls” Model A Coupe also packing a 350 Chevy.
So you can tell these two are rev heads at heart.
Keith’s passion for cars started as most of us do chasing the adrenaline of the speed and handling of the modern-day performance cars.
Having owned show winning skylines including a 1999 Godzilla R34, which is undoubtedly one of the highest spec’d performance cars to pedal. The feel of actually driving and manhandling an old school hot rod with a carburetor got the better of him and he stepped into his first hot rod, a 1937 Pontiac with no frills at all.
Once the bug of actually feeling and
driving an old school automobile got him, that was it! The sheds been full with old school ever since.
This Camaro however found its own way into the shed. After storing it for a friend for a while, it just seemed wrong for it to leave. So a deal was done and it simply stayed.
The muscle car era is pretty much the beginning of the sports performance era so Keith’s found a middle ground here between old school hot rodding and still being able to drive a car that wants to go hard and go around corners as well.
The RS certainly carries a lot of style into the Muscle car era. The sleek lines, extra swages and chrome make this a very cool looking car for sure.

It just needed a good buff and clean under the bonnet and a good cut back to remove some light scratches in the deep blue.

Canadian Club - plenty consumed while polishing and cleaning. Shane Morgan Mag and Turbo Tauranga for the awesome deal on the new wheels.

HOT ROD CLUB BAY RODDERS INC. – TAURANGA champs
HOLY, so if the Nostalgia Drags on the saturday wasn’t enough to blow the drag racing cobwebs out, then the Bay Rodders followed it up on the sunday with the Hot Rod Club Champs to fully load them veins with octane!
This is such a super cool weekend and Bay Rodders certainly go all out to make it a huge success every time!
After rocking into the Napa Autoparts Dragway - Meremere to camp up on the friday to catch the whole weekend of
racing and partying, by the time sunday morning comes around, you would think your ears might be over it. BUT HELL NO! As soon as the sound of the first V8 starting up early sunday morning to head to scrutineering, the excitement and adrenaline of the day kicks in and you’re all go again.
Sunday is the day for the clubs to get amongst it with teams racing as well as opening up the classes to not just the old nostalgic cars.
This is a super cool fun day out. Heaps of new and old builds coming out to see what times they can throw down the quarter mile. Not to mention the rivalry and banter between the clubs as to who’s the fastest or best at keeping to their ET’s.
There were a few old gassers still hanging around from the day before
too which are always massive crowd pleasers.
You either love or hate gassers and their “get the weight to the back wheels” stance and no-frills racing gear. But I love them! To me it’s old school slam that box and shove your foot into it, drag racing! Plus you can’t beat a cool old hot rod wheel standing off the start line for excitement.
It’s awesome to see a bunch of cool street machines mixing up with the hot rods too. It kind of brings a modern street race feel to the day but still old school.
The field of cars was still pretty full with just the clubs racings. It certainly made for a pretty cool looking pit lane.
The outer field was full again with noncompeting hot rods and street machines parking up for the day making for a very
cool walk-about during the lunch break.
As usual the awesome volunteers at the Meremere Dragway got the day organised and running smoothly. They certainly get behind the events there.
If you get a chance, give them a thanks! It’s a huge effort to get that show on.
Same goes for the Bay Rodders team, they put on a massive weekend with the two full-on days of racing. Plus the party saturday night with Kicking Mary rocking the place made for a bit of a slow start on sunday for some.
The atmosphere all weekend is awesome. The comradery with the competitors is awesome to see and it really is a big drag/ hot rod family when you see all the smiles and banter going on.
This is such a cool weekend and definitely one to write in your diary with a big fat felt tip pen!
So see you there next year!

“T’D UP” and ready!
Here’s a cool bit of nostalgia for you...
We’re back into Bowie’s (Ray Bowater) cave again here with another build that is tucked away in the stable between them Mustangs we featured in last months issue. We still aren’t up to the beautiful build that started our introduction off tho, that’s still to come yet!
There seems to be a common denominator with Bowie’s rides. All of them, apart from the modern Muzzy’s, are powered by Ford big blocks. Now there’s nothing wrong with that and with Bowie’s past on the race track you can tell he loves that torque that shoves you back in your seat.
This little gem is co-owned with Diane Bridge “Lady Di” and is powered by a big block 429 Ford.
The big blocks certainly produce enough torque to get this up and going but when you shove a tunnel ram on top with dual carbs, then it’s going to
scream at the end of that quarter mile drag strip as well as shove you back in your seat at the beginning of it!
There is not a lot to these T’buckets and they have been an icon of the hot rod scene since forever!
In the 70’s, building a T’bucket was a cheap way to get into hot rodding and it didn’t take long before New Zealand was taking over the US market with the number of T’s being built.
The lack of body weight and no restriction on physical engine size made for an easy way to build a fast car. You could simply drop a big block onto the chassis rails and you’re good to go!
They’re kind of like a go-kart on heat!
Obviously, corners weren’t considered as a high priority for most as most were simply flat out in a straight-line type builds.
This one however does get to tiki-tour the country roads so has a few tricks to make it a pleasure to cruise in on them sunny days.
The cross over spring has been modified to swing for a nice ride and the disk brakes up front help to keep everything under control when need be. Of course there’s no need for a stereo unit in these builds. The stereo sounds come from a set of headers poking out each side with the super trap exhausts containing as much of the noise as they can.
The thump from the big block produces enough base feeling to make the need for a sub-woofer irrelevant anyway.
Being a true-blue Ford T, the big block feeds the grunt through to them 10” wide rims via Ford C6 auto and the good ole trusty Ford 9” diff.
It’s not often you see a true-blue package like this with the original T’bucket steering wheel and no frills ready to cruise whenever type build.
In Bowie’s words, this is “bad arse” and I have no doubt that it can dance when it wants too!
Give me the dirt… MAKE AND MODEL: Ford Model T’Bucket COLOUR: Candy Apple Red Wine ENGINE: Ford big block 429 with twin carb feed tunnel ram TRANSMISSION: Ford C6 DIFF: Ford 9” SUSPENSION: Good shocks with the cross over spring modified to swing for a smooth ride BRAKES: Disks up front with the Ford 9” drums out back WHEELS: Crager mags 10” wide running Hoozier tyres on the rear with 7” wide rims up front INTERIOR: Dressed with new vinyl trims and carpet along with a dash full of gauges ANY OTHER TRICKS: Rear guards have been engraved with the Ford emblem

LETS GO TO THE HOP2021
coming along to now well over three thousand hot rods and classic cars rolling into Whangamata to party up for the weekend.
The crowd parts around mid-day for the drag racing, which isn’t quite what you would think. But it’s pretty entertaining and noisy with some fast runs anyway!
We have sooo much to show that we’re going to break it up and bring it all to you in parts so that we can show you as much as we can!
This is such an awesome event. This was the twenty first running of this event and I think I’ve managed to make the past thirteen or fourteen of them.
It certainly has grown from the early days of starting off as a rock ’n roll event to having a couple of hot rods
Entries for the cars to join into the event are restricted to around one thousand plus, but with every car entered, there’s usually two or three cars that tag along to join in on the local cruising.
The party atmosphere soon takes over this usually sleepy beach side town as the week progresses with more and more rolling into town.
Wednesday is kick-off day with a cruise from Whangamata to Waihi to park up in the main street and under the old historic pump house, making for a cool backdrop.
Live bands in the street get the party started and it’s soon all go!
Rock ‘n roll clubs get in on the act with the bands and provide some awesome entertainment taking you right back to the “Happy Days” era.
A lot of people use Wednesday in Waihi as their start day. Joining in on the park up before heading back to Beach Hop Central in Whangamata after.
Thursday was different this year. This is the first time this event has cruised to Thames for the day.
It is always tricky with sooo many cars to move them from town to town and not get too held up along the way.
Welcome to our massive coverage of this awesome event, Beach Hop 2021 in Whangamata, NZ.
The road to Thames is a beautiful drive of old school winding open roads, stunning scenery and on this occasion, a heap of people parking up along the way to capture the convoy.
Unfortunately for us the ole Chev was getting a bit too hot in the que waiting to get into Thames so a run back to Whangamata was the call for us for the day.
I could possibly give the ole Chev grief but I’m pretty sure it got further than my coupe would have.
By all accounts, the ones who made it into Thames had a great day anyway.
Everyday more and more cars arrive into town for the weekend, so by Friday morning, the que of cars lined up for this cruise is always massive!
Beach Hop is always a guess with the weather. Being a coastal town, quite often a storm will just wander in from out at sea and on this morning, it certainly came with vengeance.
Normally the Onemana Reserve would be closed if it was too wet and the cruising left to the main street of town. But on this occasion, it was actually fine until
ONEMANA! Beach Hop 2021
everyone started to arrive at the reserve. That’s when the clouds fully burst and rain came down.
Being the lively car enthusiastic crowd that Beach Hop attracts, the day didn’t just end. When the rain stopped, the band started and as it does in the East Coast towns, the sun came out and the party carried on!
Well over a thousand cars still turned out to fill the reserve providing a massive show and an awesome day out.
So that’s just the warm-up to the weekend. Saturday goes crazy!
An estimated forty thousand people roll into town to get amongst it all, so definitely catch our next issue which covers the weekend shows including the retro caravans. This will definitely blow you away.
Friday is always a huge day! This is the cruise day to Onemana, just over the hill from Whangamata.
ONEMANA!
