So that’s now ten months of cool cars, rockin’ events and just GETTING AMONGST!

It certainly has been awesome getting all this cool info, photographs and videos together for you all.

I’m currently just on my way back from Muscle Car Madness in Rangiora, South Island, so next month’s issue will be WICKEDLY FULL of burnouts, show cars, retro fashion queens and some funny cool-as cruising for sure!

Hey cheers to you all that came to say “hey” or “GET AMONGST” haha, loved that! We are so making that the catch phrase!

Thanks for the awesome feedback to! It’s awesomely appreciated. We are all kind of bashing along in these crazy times with trying to have car shows and events to

I certainly take my hat off to the organisers and clubs trying to get an event organised at the moment! It takes a heap of effort and time to organise these runs and events that we rock into, which is really why we like to help promote them any way we can.

PLUS we like to GET AMONGST! Haha

Alright, so this month’s issue is pretty cool. We have some awesome dirt track action from the Jalopy Dust-up at Waihi Beach. Then we slip back into Winter with the Bay Rodders Tauranga Inc club to GET AMONGST their Winterblast run. This is always a funny fun weekend with a cool hot rod show on the sunday.

We also have two pretty awesome feature cars. One is an incredible restore of a factory muscle car and the other a GT muscle version of your everyday American farm ute from days gone by! Both looking

Don’t forget to catch all our videos on our YouTube channel as well. Please subscribe too, as we really want to get our numbers up to be able to do more and more.

Grab this link and GET AMONGST https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UCdzntaEaAE5Hy25BNZEYPSQ/videos

Hit the “SUBSCRIBE” button on any of the videos to get notified when we have our new videos out.

If you really want to get the most of the magazines - flick them up onto your big screen via the mirror option on your phone and check it out on your computer screen. The coolest photo’s we have as a double page size. Your phone will only show half the photo as they only show one page at a time, which is a shame!

If you subscribe to the magazine, the email sent to you when we release the issues will show everything as full size so you don’t miss a thing doing it that way. Anyway, check it out and definitely come say “hey” if you see me about clicking that camera! Thanks again and Cheers all.

BRENT & ADRIENNE CAMPBELL’S Supernova

Here’s another stunning example of GM’s muscle car history direct from the stables of Brent and Adrienne’s collection.

This stunning example honestly explodes in the sunlight like a star reaching supernova status with the fine metallic flake in the blue paint reflecting the shine in such a glistening fashion it captures you as soon as you see it.

The re-build of this car is truly outstanding! The interior is as if it just left the factory floor with the upholstery and trim detailed and looking as if straight out of the 70’s.

This is actually another one of those rare finds with only seven thousand of these being built.

A fair few of these hit the race tracks, either circuit or drag and were a relatively cheap car to purchase. Old photos of college carparks would show lots of

these Nova’s ready to cause mischief, so for this stunning model to still be around today is pretty damn awesome I reckon.

The Nova’s were rated as one of the special GM muscle cars. Although being shadowed by the Chevelle’s and bigger bodied muscle cars, the compact unit that the Nova SS (Super-Sport) was meant that this little unit could fair jump and corner since they were still running the same 350 Chevy’s and 4 speed gear boxes as the bigger cars.

They were GM’s answer to the American Ford Falcon at the time and built like a little pocket rocket.

The Nova shell actually hung around for a while being used for the Buick, Oldsmobile and the Pontiac which shows how popular the compact unit was. This awesome build has had a bit of extra work done to get her to really jump now though.

The heart beat now is a 355ci Chevy with some pretty cool internals to feed some extra horsepower back through the good

ole Muncie four-speed gear box to the rear wheels.

Because real muscle cars have 4-speed gear boxes!

There’s a fair rumble out through the twin 2 1/2” exhaust that grabs your attention before the sparkle of the shine does, so you certainly know something is up when this fine automobile pulls up.

Having the opportunity to climb all over and under this stunning example is simply awesome.

They are in fact quite a classy and well finished car with their extra detailing and trims, but at the same time, you can tell it has been built to be ready for action with a longing for that Hurst shifter to be slammed and that needle in the rev counter to be tapping the red.

Maybe it’s the compact Coupe styling or the sound of that grumpy ole V8, but these things just have “race” written all over them don’t they!

HOT ‘N DUSTY RACING! Jalopy Dust Up

have the cobwebs blown off and dragged into the hills to get dusty again!

Heaps of memories of getting covered in dust as a kid watching this sort of action came flowing back here for sure!

these old things get man-handled and woman-handled around the track with no technology or electronics, just gas and spark and ROCKIN!

Noddy Watts and his awesome organising crew are the brains behind this awesome event and it couldn’t have gone any better!

Held on a private farm, this original dirt track high in the hills overlooking the awesome Waihi Beach area is a stunning spot to run an event like this.

Purely old school and full-on fun is what this day is about. There’s no big trophies or winners money here, just bragging rights for the winner which is way more important! Haha

It is so awesome to see all these old school race cars come out of the caves,

It wasn’t just the old cars either. A few new builds appeared from being built over the covid lockdowns which was awesome to see. The things people do to keep busy! Haha, it’s awesome!

The racing is simple-as! Two cars at a time playing cat and mouse around the track. Starting on opposing sides to chase each other down makes for an awesome watch!

Being a fun day like this made for some hilarious driving antics and some serious pushing of the limits of these old school builds!

The historic stock cars and midgets getting to race like the old days was awesome to watch! There’s definitely something special about watching

The dirt track cars specially built for the track were awesome to catch as well. There’s some serious skill to keeping these big wheel V8 and Turbo’d monsters screaming side ways on the limit around the dusty ole clay track!

The day itself was a stunner! After the event was canned last year due to the rain, the sun came back with a vengeance for this one. Waihi Beach goes off at any time of the year as it is, but it was super-hot and intense for this one!

The shady trees were certainly an advantage spot for viewing the racing. Kicking back with a cold one gazing over the stunning Bay of Plenty beach while cool old cars are racing around in front of you is a pretty awesome way to spend a day!

What an epic event this is and what a cool way to rip into a new year of crazy awesome old school hot rod action!

With a few entertainment laps throughout the day including Mr Perkins showing us how to completely tear it up with a fully blown ole coupe losing it in a cloud of dust as well as a parade of all the cars and a hilarious “splash for cash”.

For those who dared run head first into the biggest water filled pot hole you would never want to find and try and make it out the other side was fantastic to watch. Only two dared this mission with both getting through, almost in one piece!

The carpark was also pretty impressive to wander around as well. Old school hot rods and classics along with some cool ole bikes rolled in to make for an impressive display by itself!

This is such an epic day out and definitely a cool way to spend a day reminiscing! Scribble it in your diary for next year if you are floating around the sunny Bay of Plenty for sure.

HIS

NEIL & RHONDA M c NICKLE’S

Starting off as a barn find in Cambridge, complete with the woodgrain side trims and looking extremely 70’s ranch style. Neil already knew what his plan was going to be to turn this farm truck into something cool.

Sourcing a 1972 Torino GT front clip from the U.S. was first on the list and while waiting for that to arrive, the wanna-be 400 Cleveland thought to be in the front, turned out to have a 351M Cleveland crank. But to no avail, this soon got a rebuild complete with new heads, cam and MSD injection unit to give that everyday driveability.

The thought being a bit of boost may get added later on so the C6 auto behind was retained to handle what may come.

Neil’s no stranger to the custom or Hot Rod world. We featured their other driver “Lincolnstein” in Issue 03 of Octane Fix. This is a stunningly cool build complete with lots of delicate custom work to accentuate the already cool Lincoln styling created in the factory, so it goes without saying that this build was never going to be out-done by Starsky and Hutch when it comes to graphics.

Dave McEwan (custom art guru) was enlisted to add his artistic flair creating the side graphics with the fish scale airbrushing and metal flake finish which honestly glistens against the Colorado white paint in the sunlight.

The Torino bonnet with the twin reverse air scopes detailed with matching blue

graphics fully bringing the old farm truck into the muscle car league with its style. The interior didn’t get left alone either, an Alcantara seat was reupholstered and dropped into place along with a racing style Grant steering wheel added to further take on the muscle car theme.

The American Racing Torque Thrust wheels and big side wall tyres further adding to the styling to bring this old barn find back to the right side of the tracks.

Neil’s Hardly Davidson strapped to the back keeps the ute’s roots planted on the farm tho. This NZ built evil machine carrying a massive 5.5hp Honda engine ready to throw him off the back at any moment looks the part in matching

As if straight from the wrong side of the tracks, this way cool looking Ranchero ute of Neil and Rhonda’s has turned from an old farm truck looking automobile to a very cool looking off-shoot of the Torino GT straight from the 70’s muscle car era.

colours with its custom seat covered by Neil’s mate Jesse.

If you are from the 70’s era, chances are you fell off one of these on the farm for sure! This muscle ute is a pretty cool ride considering it’s the daily driver. Parked in the shed next to the Lincoln is another pretty cool build under construction which we will undoubtedly feature at some stage. This one is a 58 Apache complete with lots of custom trickery but modern powered this time. Rhonda’s not shy on tearing things apart either. Her new barn find of a 49 Mercury is about to get some custom trickery as well, so definitely watch this space for those to come out.

Identifying as a Hybrid 1972 MAKE/MODEL: Ford Ranchero COLOUR: Holden Colorado White with custom fish scales on the sides – Ed Roth blue flack by Dave McEwan ENGINE: 357 cubes of tall deck Cleveland Overboard 351m with 302 clevo heads, Weiand intake with MSD automatic injection comp cam, all rebuilt ready for boost at a later date TRANSMISSION: C6 Ridgeback DIFF: 3.0 ratio 9 inch peg legger ready for screaming one wheelers SUSPENSION: New shocks and springs, oversized race bushes throughout Quick ratio steering box BRAKES: Stock brakes rebuilt with metallic pads WHEELS/TYRES: American racing torque thrusts and BFG tyres INTERIOR: Grant steering wheel with redone Alcantara bench seats STEREO: Retro auto sound stereo in factory dash spot EXTRA MODS: 1972 Torino GT front clip adapted to 1973 Ranchero 500 Squire Give me the dirt…

BAY RODDERS TAURANGA INC. Winterblast 2021

days such as Retro America and Gravel Motor Garage.

Saturday is the real kick-off day for the weekend’s hilarity and events.

It all starts at the Bay Rodders Club rooms with the mystery dress-ups nominated for the mystery rally around The Bay.

It pretty much looked like a bunch of drowned rats running around with sheets of soggy paper at one stage.

Luckily a stop-over was planned at Henry’s Hot Rod Shop in Katikati for lunch and some more hilarious antics in an attempt to gain more points for the rally sheet.

I’ve been rocking over to this event for years and years now and for some reason, the wintery days turn it on for this one!

This weekend always seems to fall when I’m on my maintenance mission with the coupe getting ready for the summer season, so I’ve never actually managed to get the coupe to it.

It is however, a very cool weekend to get amongst!

Friday is the quiet kick-off day with people rolling in to register then roll around to the various supporting businesses to check out their open

With a list of questions to answer and directions as to roughly where you should drive off to, the rally begins!

It’s not too hard to get lost though as you manage to catch up with everyone pretty fast, although that’s not a sure thing as the directions can somewhat mean a few u-turns!

The name Winterblast certainly made itself known on the saturday. The clouds opened up for sure with torrential rain hitting the run making for some hilarious mad dashes to get the answers to the questions on the rally sheet.

This was an awesome chance to dry off and check out the cool stuff that the guys at Henry’s are working on.

From here it was a lazy cruise back to the club rooms at The Mount before getting ready to get into party mode with a dinner organised at the Armitage Motel and a live band to crank the show into action.

Sunday is the day for the car show and automotive swap meet in the Durham Street car park building.

This has always been a great show with attendances on some days completely filling the car park buildings four levels.

Here’s a throw-back to the wintery days in Tauranga, which is in the normally sunny Bay of Plenty!

Being a covered building, it is great for sheltering from any crap weather but the sunday actually turned out to be a great day. Heaps of vendors rocked in to sell all sorts of automotive parts along with some cool old school cars for sale.

The hot rod display covered most floors almost to the roof top with heaps of day entries rolling in to get amongst it.

Bay Rodders had a heap of giveaways and prizes for the entrants donated by sponsors. These were handed out at the end of the show with a huge table of goodies being spread out through lucky dips.

This is a great weekend to get amongst! It’s an awesome way to kick them midwinter blues into touch with most runs waiting for the summer season, so look out for it later this year!
