Come wander around Muscle Car Madness in its entirety - Burnouts, Retro Pageants and Show Cars. IT’S A MASSIVE PARTY! Check out this stunning laid-back, ROCKIN’ IT 34 Coupe and feast yourself on Burger Fuels Buffalo Buick! Its Madness!
Holy, it’s march already and the so-called summer season is rapidly drawing to an end.
Don’t get all glum though, the car show scene is actually kicking off right now. We’ve got burnouts, drags, cruises and shows all in the pipeline, so we’re going to be crazy busy catching up for sure!
I can’t wait to see the new builds that have been happening over the lockdowns. I’ve managed to catch a couple and the standard of the new builds coming out now is awesome!
I have to say, the goodies you can buy off the shelf now to customise and make your ride your own is just awesome. It certainly makes things a lot easier and probably cheaper that’s for sure. There are always the nutters like myself who like to dream up bits and build stuff, but that’s just who
I love how all our mind sets are generally based around the car scene, even though we are in it for different reasons.
Some are in for the feeling and memory of cruising in an old car again, some for the adrenaline of slamming a hardcore crunchie gear box and feeling that grumpy ole V8 shove you back in the seat. Others just like to build and tinker to create their own build to express their thoughts, taking on the same sense of direction the earlier auto designers had of building a piece of auto-art that would stir an emotion within to make you want it.
I honestly believe that apart from all that, we simply love the atmosphere and vibe that happens when an event is on and we all get together again.
Whether it’s drag racing, burnouts, cruising or massive events like Muscle Car Madness, the mass of smiles and laughs is so awesome to be amongst!
Even if we’ve killed our ride, we can still have a laugh over a cold one with our crowd, and that is SUPERCOOL!
So this issue here, we have gone hard on Muscle Car Madness. This is such an awesome event to GET AMONGST! It’s got everything from shows, cruising, live bands, burnouts and retro pageants. If you have ever wondered if it’s worth getting your butt to, check this out and I bet I see you there next year.
This month is kicking off with an awesome burnout session, live viewing as-well which is a first for NZ! Arnie Donaldson alias “LOLIFE” is the creator behind this event and it’s going to be EPIC!
Watch this space for more on that along with more feature cars and some exciting news regarding the Outlaw 71 Drag Racing. We have got some awesome news coming up on that front too!
So cheers all, thanks so much again for all your support and encouragement, I really do awesomely appreciate it! Cheers Giggles

LUXURYA Feast of
1964 BUICK RIVIERA
I finally managed to get my hands on this stunning Buick Riviera to fully feast my eyes on.
This deluxe model here is from the beginning of GM’s launch into the personal luxury automobile market and is simply stunning as to how they built and how they finished their cars way back then!
I always rave on how the designers back in the fifties and sixties were fully designing cars as pieces of art and this model here proves my point!
The Riviera was built and named as such to evoke the passion of the French Riviera, alluring the emotion of class and affluence.
Unlike the standard luxury cars of the day, the rear seats in these Riviera’s are
also bucket seats, defining the car into four separate areas with a walnut wood finished centre console and aluminium trim to give each passenger their own personal area. Hence their marketing of a personal luxury car.
The seats are as if straight out of your lounge from back in the sixties with deep buttoned trim and wide arm rests.
The detailing with the electric windows all round, personal cigarette lighter for the rear passengers, electric seat control for the driver and the multiple interior courtesy lights not only looks classy but adds luxury to the ride. It really is a comfortable car to cruise in!
It’s not just a cruiser either. Fitted with a 465ci V8 and weighing in at around
180kg lighter than the earlier Buicks and Thunderbirds, these awesome looking luxury cars will still get along at over 100mph. The dealer cards stating 115mph (185kph) max speed for the smaller 400ci versions.
The finishing, style and grace of the Buicks has always done it for me. They are truly a step up in the luxury sense.
The grill covers protruding over the headlights tying back to the centre grill giving a custom feel to the car. The stainless side trims alluding to vents to the rear wheel arches all makes for a staunch looking muscle car but luxury at the same time.
The metal forming of the panels around the car including the moulded bonnet to
You are bound to have seen some of the BurgerFuel’s fleet of awesome muscle cars cruising around some of the shows that we get along to, or rolling down the drag strip at Meremere Dragway getting amongst it and proving that they are not there to just look good!
the Riviera “R” emblem is truly a credit to designers and builders of the time.
I can certainly understand why BurgerFuel picked the Riviera.
This is one of those cars that could be comfortable anywhere. Parked outside your local diner with a burger tray hanging off the window or in the courtyard of a mansion. The rumble from the factory twin exhaust putting that smile on your face as soon as that growly ole V8 starts up, letting you know this is a special car that could rip down the quarter mile no worries at all.
The plate “DOOFER” referring to the multiple speakers and amplifiers filling the custom lined boot space certainly steps it into the custom show space but still carrying its classiness with it.
It really is awesome to see the passion and enthusiasm that BurgerFuel put into their builds.
The paint work on their cars is truly awesome. The custom three tone pearl colour fading through purple tinges to blue honestly catches your eye on the curves as it transitions. It simply sparkles in the sunlight and makes these classic cars stand out by accentuating the factory lines and style.
You could honestly rock into a hot rod show with any one of their builds.

Q&A:
So how long have you owned the car? 7 years
Where did you find it, import or around NZ? On good oldTradeMe
Any other cool cars in the shed?
At HQ we have a‘72 Ford Fairmont,’65 Dodge Coronet and the Buick and our awesome franchisees around the country have an array of cars like:Valiant Charger,Chevrolet Camaros, Ford Torino, Plymouth Barracuda, Oldsmobile Cutlass and many more Favourite style of car? We do love a Coupe but anything in the muscle era
What’s on the stereo right now? Radio BurgerFuel of course!
Are you involved in any car clubs? We host many at BurgerFuel stores around the country. We have 58 stores nationwide
Did you buy the car as is or build it? Bought and modified to our taste
What condition was it in when you got it? It was a baby blue colour and relatively stock
Anyone you would you like to thank for helping with the car?
Rapid Radio for the sound system, Fuel Conversions and Auto Repairs for the mechanical maintenance, Steve Levine for the custom paintjob and Jonny Promo for sourcing our fleet
What’s the background to the fleet?
The BurgerFuel fleet is made up of customs, classics and muscle cars built in ‘the muscle car era’ between 1965 and 1972 and, like our burgers, they are all customised in some special way and branded the iconic trademark 3-tone fade pearl paint job.
Four machines reside at HQ and franchisees throughout the country own a wide range of branded custom classics – they might be parked proudly at store fronts, seen cruising the streets on the school run, at local events… or sit languishing at the mechanics, waiting for some rare part to be flown in fromThe States,to get it cranking again.Anyone who owns a classic will know well the investment, in both time and the dollars, not to mention foregoing reliability all together.Just getting fromA to B shouldn’t be an expectation, but a bonus, when you’re rolling in a ride that’s been around for 30+ years. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
The BurgerFuel Franchisee Collection consists of a varied and eclectic range of machines, such as a ’71 Chrysler Valiant Charger,’66 Chrysler 300,’72 Holden Kingswood,’72 Ford Torino Ranchero, ’67 Plymouth Barracuda, ’69 Chevrolet Camaro, ’71 Ford Torino, ’75 Holden Ute HJ – and the list goes on...
Our burger names pay homage to all things cars, from the Bacon Backfire,V8Vegan and Ford Freakout,to theAmerican Muscle and Burnout. And a glance back at the menu from the early days show we’ve always been keen on a bit of word play, with burger names like Chicknition Pear,Studnut Stilton and Pontiac Pickle.
Some cringey, some pure genius – but one thing’s for sure, we’ve got plenty more Burger/Car puns where those came from!
Each and every BurgerFuel is unique and designed to set our instore environments apart from the rest. Look around and you’ll find subtle hints of auto influences throughout the dining room. From the specially engineered piston Doofer dispenser and retro car interior inspired bench seating,to the hanging ‘lollipop’ signage above the counter, a nod to speedo dials on a dashboard. Perhaps, the most infamous is the spark plug chandeliers, made bespoke and hung above most stores’ communal tables (watch your head). Next time you’re in Taupo, stop by and check out the car parts suspended from the ceiling.

MUSCLE CAR MADNESS 2022
Amongst all the chaos that’s been happening in the show circuit over the past year with all the crowd restrictions, red lights and so on, this weekend must have been “meant to be”.
Wednesday is the sneak-in day to get in and set up before the actual event officially starts on the thursday.
This is just one of those events that you just have to do at least once in your life! The worst possible thing that could happen is that you will go back every year after that oncer, just like what’s happened to me!
This is such an awesome, chilled, yet busy-as event. I guess it’s only as busy as you make it, but there is so much to see and do that you just don’t want to miss out on anything! IT’S ALL TOO AWESOME!
From live bands, cars cruising, show ‘n shines and burnouts to retro pageants, it’s all on for the entire four days that this event runs.
Stottle Promotions are the dream team behind this. Craig, Marty, Correna and an awesome support team managed to get this weekend together yet again.
I guess since it’s now thirty one years since it started, it would be “just wrong” for it not to happen!
The only real rule inside the gates at this run is “don’t be a dick” and with that said, it runs pretty damn smooth considering you have around sixteen hundred people partying up over those four days.
It’s pretty obvious that when you get a huge bunch of people together who are like minded, into their cars (no matter what make or model) and are all there to have a good time, that the party atmosphere just keeps rolling!
Held in the Rangiora A&P Showgrounds, about half an hours drive from Christchurch. This entire event can be contained and run within one huge area.
Waking up thursday morning and you wouldn’t think that though! The grounds actually look pretty full come thursday morning, so with people rolling in all day to fill in the gaps, the showgrounds are fully in party-mode come thursday night and that’s when it all officially kicks off.
First up is a cruise for entrants to go wandering around the Rangiora township, then off to surrounding towns to get amongst the locals lining the streets out to catch a glimpse of what the weekend is about.
It’s fully awesome to catch all the smiling faces of young and old who simple love the old school cars.
It would certainly appear that the locals are just as enthusiastic as the actual owners as to the weekend that has just started.
Get comfy and kick back for the craziest most epic weekend of the year right here!
ASHLEY GORGE CRUISE
The SummertimeGreatFun Run
Friday morning rolls around and with “not too early” being another good rule, it’s line up for a cruise out to the awesome Ashley Gorge for lunch by the river.
This is always an awesome wander through the country-side out to the reserve there. Right beside the stunning Ashley River is an awesome area to park up, catch up and chill out with lunch supplied by the MCM crew if you wanted. A fair crowd rolled out there this year, completely filling the reserve which made for an awesome chance to wander about and see who had rolled into the event the night before.
In true MCM fashion, it was a stunningly hot day again, so the shady trees made for an awesome spot to chill under.
This was just the beginning of the entertainment for the friday. From here, you could either cruise back to the showgrounds via Oxfords awesome retro diner for lunch or head back to get dusty at the dust up.

PADDOCK BASH Dusty dust up
Friday arvo’s entertainment was a new one this year. On the way back to the Showgrounds, if you were in the mood for a good skiddem-up session or wanted to see just how good you could throw that old car around, you could stop in at the grass track used for the awesome “Rust ‘n Dust” events.
The Winters kindly set up their roadside paddock with a circuit to try out your skills.
Based on fastest time around the coned track, she was all on to see who was the fastest.
I must admit, it was awesome to see the skills that came out and just as awesome to laugh at the skills that didn’t!
Toby Ireland was the man that stole the skilled section for me! I’m picking he was practicing in his parent’s car well before they knew he could drive like that!
It goes to show a good ole V8 Cortina still looks and handles good drifting rally styles!
Unfortunately loosing it on the last corner lost him the title for fastest time. That
actually changed hands a few times after that with only points of seconds in it in the end.
All in all, it was an awesome fun arvo of banter and laughs in the scorching sun before heading back to party central at the Rangiora A&P Showgrounds to get amongst it all again.

Cruising on a Friday…
This is what MCM is all about, getting your mates together and having a laugh wandering the perimeter cruise circuit of the Showgrounds.
Anything gets driven around here. From twin V8 tractors, four-wheel boats to weird Mad Max type creations, it all happens along with the fat-as muscle cars and hot rods!
This entertainment happens all by itself and it’s AWESOME to GET AMONGST!
In the shed is the live band arena.
Jordan Luck and Co were the awesome entertainment for the night thrashing good ole Kiwi classics and ROCKIN the crowd into the morning hours.

Chopped, laid and
BACK IN BLACK!
Check this absolutely stunning build out here. These laid-back 3 window coupes capture me every time!
I so love the style and flow of the body lines. The laid-back radiator surround giving that appearance of doing 100mph while still parked.
The roof chop accentuating the lines and the appearance of speed that just screams “drag race” as if still back in the era.
Yep, you guessed it! I want one too!
Cyril and Jane are not strangers to the muscle car and hot rod scene. With a fair list of previous cool cars having lived in
their garage, including Aussie muscle and American pick-ups. This awesome build here was on the wish list for a fair while.
It just takes the time to be right for these things to happen, but this one was definitely worth waiting for.
This isn’t just a pretty looking hot rod either! The running gear and set-up under that beautiful glossy black paint is definitely ready for action.
Unlike the early rods of the era where it was “drop a huge motor in and let’s go!”
This build has had a lot of thought gone into stopping that big motor and to even go around corners as well, making it a pretty awesome ride.
Up front under that cool louvered hood, that big shiny thing is actually a 350 Chevy engine with some extra goodies
packed in to make it jump. This all shoves a heap of power back through a 700 R4 automatic transmission which has been manualised and shift kitted to make it full-on fun when them revs start climbing. Of course the standard tuff-as houses Ford 9” diff is slotted in the back there but the brake set up is now a disk brake conversion to match the front to help pull her up when she gets flying.
The rear end set under the car looks a true piece of engineering art work. The gloss black diff housing held in place by a four-bar setup and chromed coil-over shocks leading to the semi-polished brake callipers looks awesomely well finished and is just as much of a feature as the rest of the goodies on top of the chassis.
The 2 ½” HPC coated exhaust flowing
CYRIL & JANE JOLLY’S 34 COUPE
snuggly between the rails to up and over the diff fully highlights the thought and effort gone into this build to be both show and go!
The interior certainly didn’t get left behind in the design department.
The stitched custom design interior panels and modern-day seats making for a classy modern look along with providing a comfortable and secure ride when slamming that shifter.
The hood lining and center consul holding the stereo unit taking it back to the early hot rod custom era but at the same time leaving the dash clean and original to display the classic styled gauges, giving it that true early hot rod look that so appeals.
This really is a stunning looking, well executed build! The stance on them big wheels giving both the early hot rod look but at the same time a modern “let’s go racing around corners” look.
It’s not often you get both characteristics to coincide together so gracefully to appeal to the eye and leave you thinking “that could be a race car”.
Give me the dirt…

I t’s Show Time!
The car show itself is massive, I couldn’t honestly say how many are on display, but that centre field is bumper to bumper in double rows of awesome hot rods, muscle cars and good ole classics for everyone to check out.
effort, time and patience that goes into some of the creations is simply stunning by itself.
After the party-up with the live bands the night before, it’s either drag ya butt out of bed to get your ride looking all gorgeous for the show in the centre field, or laze-in and wander around it at your own pace. The choice is all yours!
The centre field of the A&P Showgrounds turns into a massive hot rod and muscle car show on the saturday.
The gates open to the public at 10am to roll in and see what all the excitement is about. By then the kids rides, bouncy castles, food stalls and lots and lots of other goodie stores are set up to entertain and generally take care of the masses wandering around.
As always, there are a few fresh builds straight out of the sheds to debut at the show. It’s awesome to see the new standard and ideas coming out.
The early cars are true pieces of auto-art in my mind. It’s awesome to see how others grab that same thought and either carry on progressing with that art form or simply accentuate what’s already there.
The paint work on some of these builds is simply stunning! Guessing the hours involved in some would be absolutely impossible and even hard to gather when you are told how many!
The engraving in the low-rider scene and slowly creeping into the hot rod scene is another amazing thing to check out! The
Live bands roll in and off the centre stage at the food court throughout the day, stopping only for the Retro Fashion pageant before ripping into it again.
Over the back field another band cranks up to entertain the crowd gathering for the burnout competition before that rips into action after the pageant.
There seriously is something for everyone here. From shopping to eating, rocking to live bands to checking out cool cars. All this and the pageant and burnouts to entertain all in one place is simply awesome!
Like I said, I went down once to check this event out and have been back another three times since, it’s that AWESOME!
This is what the draw card is for the public and first timers to Muscle Car Madness.

Saturday midday is the Muscle Car Madness Retro Rockabilly Pageant on the main stage and it is awesome!
From toddlers to distinguished folk, it’s all on to take a trip down memory lane or just dream up your own style and GET AMONGST it!
This is such a cool event. The smiles, the styles and the cheeky ideas to grab the judges attention makes for some fun entertainment.
This is when you get to see that black metalhead t’shirt, boot wearing lady suddenly appear looking so classy in a gorgeous dress and heels to her ears, that you don’t even recognise her!
For the blokes, it’s much the same! All of a sudden they are distinguished! Well, at least for that skip down the catwalk. It’s generally short lived, but that’s how we know them anyway!
Even the kids get amongst it dressing
in rockabilly or old styles to bring back the era.
It must be a hard choice for the judges to choose a final winner, but with crowd participation to help make their minds up, it seems to work out pretty good.
There are several categories for the entrants to choose from so it fully is a fun event to make something of.
If roaming around a thousand or so cool old classics and hot rods didn’t make you drift back in time, then this certainly will.

SMOKIN’ them up!
Saturday arvo is the Muscle Car Madness Burnout competition.
This again is a massive attraction to MCM all by itself. People roll in from far and wide to get amongst this tarmac action.
As the live band stops rocking out and the murmur of the crowd gets taken over by the rumble of a fully blown V8 pulling up to the pad gates, you know you’re in for a massive afternoon of full-on tyre shredding entertainment!
The pad is pretty simple, just roll on out and GET INTO IT! But it makes for a massive smoke up session for sure!
The raised banks around the perimeter of the pad are perfect for spectators. Flat deck trucks, vans and all sorts get used as viewing platforms here.
The pad is pretty much open to anyone who wants to get into it, but it’s the screaming V8’s that really take the show.
The tyre shredding torque from the blown V8’s are definitely the crowd pleasers. The screaming LS’s are not far behind when it comes to tearing them up either.
Saturday is the qualifying day for the finals on the sunday, so it’s a full-on session to make the finals.
Unfortunately the weather managed to get in the way of holding the sunday finals this time but the saturday session certainly filled the burnout fix!
If wicked cool cars and fashion parades haven’t captured you yet, then GET AMONGST this!

Cruisin time...
The saturday is a busy day to get around everything if you want to. There is so much to see, but you can choose to just cruise and watch it roll on by later in the day if you want.
The perimeter cruising road opens again at around four o’clock and the hard case entertainment starts again with all sorts of creations out cruising along with the cool rides doing laps again.
This rolls on to about ten thirty at night, but by then the live bands have kicked off again in the hall and the party is back into full swing back in there again.
So that’s about a wrap of Muscle Car Madness 2022.
What an awesome event this is again! This is definitely one of those events you need to get to. Old school fun and cars and GETTING AMONGST while we still can!
GET AMONGST!
