LOLIFE BURNOUTS, DRAGS FURNIE’SANDPARTY!

Jump in for a skid session at the LOLIFE Burnout Comp then roar down the track at Martinborough Cruise In. Plus check out an awesome retro mod 56 Chevy and a classy Stingray from the unofficial show

Alrighty, we’ve got a quick dozen here!

We’re up to Issue 12 already of this online publication. It seems to have rocked up to 12 pretty damn fast for me. It’s like we’ve just finished that box and ready to GET AMONGST capturing as much as we can with all the events now about to happen.

It finally looks like we are all go again at 100mph, so I know we’ll be roaring around trying to capture as much of them as possible to bring to you.

I can’t wait either. I think we have all been hanging out to GET AMONGST the scene again.

The drag racing events are already booked in at the tracks and the shows are already popping up with their dates as well, so it’s going to be a roaring year for sure!

Seems weird that we are kicking off as the summer slowly fades with the day

light hours, but I guess that means more time in the sheds tinkering.

I know there’s been a lot of new builds happening so we’ll be able to finally see them cruising the streets which is awesome!

Last month was a ripper to kick start it off, just quietly, in an unofficial way.

The LoLife Burnout comp was awesome to say the least. This was a full-on day of screaming engines and tyre smoke. Being live streamed internationally was a first for NZ and I would say by the feedback, it will very likely be happening again.

We have massive coverage of the event later in here, plus on our YouTube channel.

It’s awesome to see the club runs and breakfast gatherings still happening. They are definitely the main stays for the scene.

In this issue we cover a couple of awesome rides captured at the unofficial Martinborough Cruise In. Plus catch-up with Terry Furness on his tribute run. This was such an awesome day out and a great way to celebrate the effort that Terry has put into the scene from many a year gone by.

So GET AMONGST, rip into it, flick the vids onto your big screen to really get into it and for the best viewing of the photos, grab your laptop or computer instead of the phone and fully immerse yourself.

Cheers all, thanks so much again for your support and we shall see you out there cruising.

Cheers Giggles (aka Bogan)

A DAY OF TRIBUTE TOFurnie

This could have easily been mistaken as a mini Pre 49 Nationals this day.

Terry Furness has been around the hot rod scene in New Zealand longer than I can remember.

Meeting Terry in my teens, he already had a well established panel beating business in Mount Maunganui and performed his magic with all the custom work on the very first vehicle I owned.

He was well into his own collection of hot rods then and had built many showwinning cars of the time for himself and others.

Terry’s photo albums are like a trip down memory lane with the history of hot rodding in New Zealand as he was pretty much there making it all happen, getting the club scenes up and running.

When Pete Tyrell mentioned he was going to organise a tribute run to honour Terry’s service to the scene, I couldn’t agree with

him more that this was an awesome thing to do!

I mean, why wait until after the fact to say “thanks” and “good on you!”

By the number of hot rods rolling in on the day to get amongst it, it was obvious just how much Terry is appreciated in the scene for all he has done.

Having kick started the scene in the 60’s in Matamata, Terry then moved to Tauranga and started the Bay Rodders Inc. Club before moving on to help start the Oceanside Rodders Club in Mount Maunganui.

Over the past sixty odd years, he has been fully influential in the scene and its direction, not only with the organising, but with his custom work in building rods as well.

The early rodding days were certainly more custom orientated giving Terry freedom with the panel side to get creative.

The day kicked off with everyone meeting at ‘The Crossing’ shopping centre in Tauranga before heading off for a cruise.

Led by Terry and his son in Terry’s T Bucket, the line-up of awesome rods headed to McLarens Falls reserve for lunch and a chill session to catch up and generally just have a laugh.

Around a hundred and fifty rods rolled in to get amongst it with a team of rodders taking over the cooking duties on the bbq, whipping up lunch for everyone involved and making a cool day of it.

It honestly looked like a mini Pre 49 Nationals with all the Model A’s and T’s lined up with the reserve making a perfect backdrop for a picnic lunch just like the old days.

Like clock-work, the weather held out for the afternoon cruise before a heap headed back to the Furness residence to fully get into party mode. Bill Ward cranked out some bluesy tunes before Al Dawson and the Wildcats cranked into it to carry the party on.

A few cheeky speeches and reminiscing went on with a couple of very cool plaques presented to Furnie from Pete and mates plus the Matamata Rod & Custom Club.

This really was an awesome day out and for such a cool reason. The cheek, the laughs, the memories that had been forgotten brought back to life, but apart from all that, the chance to say “good onya mate”!

The massive smile on Furnie’s face all day being priceless to say the least. Hats off to all involved getting the day sorted, it certainly was a very cool thing to do.

STINGRAYFeisty

This is one of those occasions where you roll into a car park and a car just jumps out at you with its bright colour and sleek lines screaming at you to go check it out! SO I DID!

These Stingrays have always captured me with their sleek lines, big rolled wheel arches raised up higher than the bonnet. The low lying roofline that slides back down to the boot resembling an actual stingray shape to slip through the air as if in water.

These cars were fully designed to be the sleekest and the best aerodynamic car on the market at the time and the designers fully got into it.

The headlights are recessed behind the

SIMON & CATH FULLER’S

pop-up covers, the door handles recessed into the top of the door panels. The front spoiler designed to create the air flow over the body with the windscreen wipers even recessed under the bonnet so as to not interrupt the air flow.

To create such a shape, the bodies are full reinforced fibreglass to get the flowing effect.

The bonus with this is that these muscle cars wont rust away on us which is a massive thing these days.

The designers were clever with it though. Knowing it wasn’t going to handle a crash the same as the steel bodies. The rear bumper actually has shock dampers as mounts to an aluminium bumper. The front bumper being part of the body, is supported with a honey comb structure behind to withstand a minor impact. The word minor is stressed though! It’s definitely not something you would want to test.

You would think that these are a light car

being fibreglass, but in fact they are a tad bit heavier than the average Chevy of the day.

The cool roof line of these Stingrays is awesome. The T top removable split roof was a huge rage in the mid seventies and are awesome on a hot summer day to be able to unclip the roof and run like a convertible.

The interiors are classy and definitely take on the sports and muscle car look with the stainless bezel gauges filling the centre dash down to the woodgrain centre console. The woodgrain panels are also included in the door cards to bring the entire style together.

The actual cabin area is relatively small compared to the size of the car. The seating position is located towards the centre of the car which makes for an awesome looking sports car being centre weighted as well.

There really isn’t a lot of room in these Stingrays. I guess that makes for less

to pack on a trip so that it keeps its sports appeal not being weighed down!

The power pack in this ride is a nicely tickled 350 Chevy back to an automatic transmission which makes for a cool car to cruise in and hit the open roads. Four-wheel disk brakes are a bonus on these 75 models as it really gets you into that sports car ride.

It’s awesome to see Simon and Cath get into cruising this Vette. They are an awesome car to see rolling at you with that low lying sleek body and wide wheels dumping it on the tarmac.

The Corvettes certainly have a style of their own with their body shape. Powered much the same as any other muscle car but done with that look to compete with the European sports car market. The winning factor being the sound of a cool ole grumbly V8 in there to satisfy the ears. Very cool!

Martinborough Cruise In 2022

THE UNOFFICIAL AWESOME WEEKEND!

along to. Damien Pivac is the man behind getting this awesome weekend happening and has been for a fair-few years now. I say a fair-few, because I can’t remember how many, but I’ve managed to get to four of them so far.

gleaming in the sunshine and a heap of people checking it all out.

The run wasn’t officially on due to the restrictions put in place only four days prior to it kicking off, but as you know with our lot, if there’s a party planned, it’s going to happen!

I was still at Muscle Car Madness with the ferry booked and a plan to hit Martinborough to get amongst this awesome weekend when it was suddenly, “well, what are we doing now?”

So just like a heap of other people who had organised themselves for the weekend, the thought was, “go and do it anyway,” and what an awesome thought that was.

This is such an awesome run to get

The run normally starts on the thursday with cruises around the area to local pubs for lunches and a few stops at local hot rod businesses like Magoo’s to check out what’s in the pipeline to hit the scene.

Friday is the fun day with a session out at the Masterton Motorplex Dragstrip. This is such an awesome day out. With Flagdrop racing like the grudge days, it’s all on for anyone who wants to jump in for a rev and rip down the drag strip. Whether you’re in to see how your ride compares to your mates or just want to hear it scream, this is your chance to have a giggle and get amongst it.

Saturday is normally the ‘show day’ in the Martinborough square where it is normally packed with awesome rides

With the event actually being cancelled this time, the strip was still booked with nothing actually happening. Damien being the good bloke decided, “NOPE, not having that!” If a hundred people want to turn up and make a day of it, then it’s on! What an awesome decision this was. Heaps of like-minded car enthusiasts decided exactly the same and rolled into Martinborough to make something of the weekend anyway.

Lots having accommodation already sorted and deciding rather than loose it, just do it!

The town streets looked awesome with cool muscle cars and hot rods filling the car parks like the old days. The back drop with the historic buildings looked awesome with it all together making for a cool scene from back in the sixties.

Well, this weekend was one totally out of the bag and what an awesome weekend it turned into!

With a maximum number at the track, it was all on. The day was a scorcher as Martinborough does.

The entertainment was full-noise throughout the afternoon with non-stop fun drag racing or just “give us a skid” laps down the track.

Being right next to the Masterton airstrip, the entertainment wasn’t just on the track.

Over head a heap of old war-birds were flying about practicing tricks and generally just getting amongst the scene as well.

It really was like a jump back in time to when days were simple, where petrol and spark were the only concerns you had!

The weekend pretty much rolled on as if the run hadn’t been cancelled. The only difference being the cruises were not actually organised, but like we do, we “GET AMONGST” anyway!

It’s always cool to meet new people in the scene, check out new rides you haven’t spotted before and for me, another chance to go crazy with the camera!

Definitely stick this run in your diary for next year, January 26-29 2023. There’s a heap to do in the area and great accommodation.

Damien normally has an awesome schedule to keep you busy if you want or you can just chill out in the town square and just watch the world go by.

KIM MACAULEY’S (DAD & DAUGHTER’S)

56 CHEVY S tunning

This was a pretty cool off-the-cuff photoshoot.

While hanging out at the Masterton Dragway for the unofficial Martinborough Cruise In - fun drag day, Kim’s stunningly cool 56 Chevy here kept grabbing my attention. The paint finish and colour gleaming in the bright sunlight made the burgundy colour just glisten on them flowing Chevy curves!

Lucky for me Kim was hanging around at the end of the day, so it just seemed wrong not to point a couple of cameras at it and capture just how cool this creation actually is.

Kim’s attention to detail with the finishing is truly admirable. Everywhere you look, inside and out, the detail is crisp, polished and really thought out.

The colour matching and the theme with the new upholstery through to the grill bezels wrapping the dash with the

polished aluminium and gold “Bel Air” emblem fully completes the new modern interior, but keeps it traditional to its era of the 1950’s.

The new sports gauges replicating the old analogue era but with a modern twist as well.

The upholstery itself reflects the original seat designs with the Chevy triangle laid across the backs but now modern with its stitching and custom door cards.

This definitely sits in the resto mode section of coolness.

Under that huge bonnet and flowing back under the car is simply stunning as well.

The tricked up 350 Chevrolet engine looking fully at home with the extra chrome detailing, polished pulleys and MSD ignition.

Climbing under the back of the car to see the effort didn’t stop there is truly awesome.

The big factory diff painted in gloss black matching the springs and running gear shows the extra effort that Kim has put in here. The petrol tank painted in silver highlights just how much effort has gone in to detailing this build.

Kim’s a car painter by trade and you can fully see he has stamped his name on this build. Not only his name either. Kim & Jodi’s daughter Charlotte is standing very close by to take over the reigns of this ride when her drivers license arrives. Her name is also stamped on the completion plate!

The exterior paint layout pays tribute back to the original Chevy styling of the era. The white infill following the stainless trim to up and over the roof tying back to the Chevy triangle on the seat backs just the same.

I really like how the original design has not been lost in the restoration here. The new colours actually accentuate the

design with a bold appearance, yet doing it in style with a classy look.

This really is a beautiful resto mod build. The upgraded Wilwood brake rotors and callipers giving the muscle car appearance yet the rest of the car looking factory but extremely classy and modern at the same time.

The extra sway bar underneath, fat rubber on the ground and them larger brakes certainly turns this into an awesome touring machine to match that Chevy engine. As a package, this really is a stunningly well completed build not only as a show car but for “go” as well!

I can see why he loves getting out in this ride!

Get Amon st LOLIFE BURNOUT COMPETITION g

and a chance to take away some of the awesome prizes up for grabs, it was clear this was going to be a massive day.

Arnie Donaldson has been tearing up the burnout pads in his roof chopped, methanol snorting, screaming V8 Cleveland for years now. Competing in events throughout New Zealand and even heading over the ditch to rark them Aussies up at the famous Summernats, so it was no surprise when he mentioned that he wanted to run his own event.

Getting the ball rolling with sponsors and organisers is always a mission, but Arnie’s enthusiasm for the sport is as solid as a rock. Teaming up with Ruthless Entertainment, it wasn’t long before things were rolling pretty fast.

With around thirty-five entrants rolling in to battle it out for the top honours

Everything from blown V8 family wagons to LS powered purpose-built shopping baskets turned up to rip it up on the purpose-built burnout pad at the Napa Auto Parts Dragway in Meremere.

The pad is great for some serious tip-in action with the V8 shopping baskets fully donutting the length of the pad only to scream back up the start lane and do it all again!

For spectators, the layout is great with the raised banks of the dragway giving awesome viewing.

With the limited spectator restrictions at the moment, and the determination not to have to cancel or postpone the event because of it, a live feed was organised

with Kiwi Motorsport Media to provide live online coverage of the entire event. With the volume of entrants having two rounds to prove their worth to win a place in the Top 10 to battle out the honours, the actual event rolled on nonstop for around five hours of awesome burnout action.

With different categories for prizes, it was all go, from Best Tip-in, Best Six to all out Best Burnout.

The top 10 consisted of Hayden Whilby - NUTOUT, Dave Williamson – BATMAN, Fats Nicholson -MRC*NT, Rob Simmons - green/black falcon, Teina Mana –Cortina, Gareth Karrasch - Skid Up, Ryan Shirtcliffe - Violent, Warren ShirtcliffeJusta6, Sean Morgan - silver falcon and Dwight ‘McOrsum’ -SKDLFE thrashing it out once more with Hayden Wilby

What an EPIC event this is!

finally taking out his revenge on the pad from last years fire to take the winner’s trophy home.

Hard Luck for the day went to Callum McLeod and Best Tip-in’s to Fats Nicholson, Ryan Shirtcliffe and Dave Williamson.

Arnie must have definitely had itchy feet being the organiser of the day and not actually competing, but to the pleasure of the crowd and I’d say for his own wellbeing, he opened AND closed the day with an awesome tyre frying, Cleveland screaming action display to fully cover the pad and crowd with tyre smoke. The laughing smile on his face throughout certainly showing his happy place!

This was such an EPIC day out and bound to be a popular one to add to the calendar.

The live streaming adding a whole new dimension to the sport and a first for NZ to get amongst in the scene.
