Check out these two awesome His & Hers Pick-ups. Then roar into the Mangakino Hop with some screaming V8 action. Grab some goodies at the Matamata Swap Meet and Show then GRAB HOLD for the AWESOME Gasser Wars Drag Racing Meet !! IT’S OUR 1st BIRTHDAY HERS HIS PICK-UPS BUT WE’RE GIVING AWAY THE PRESENTS!

MERRY BORNDAY to us!

So where did that year go? Holy, so this is our 1st Birthday and even with all the chaos and cancellations, we still managed to get amongst some awesome shows, drag racing and burnouts to bring you the biggest coverage available in the world!

I have to say, I’m stoked with the fantastic feedback and support we have been getting from all of you. Thank you so much for getting behind this new concept to cover our events.

It really is awesome to be able to bring you such big coverage so that you can suss out the different shows and events to get along to.

It has also been fantastic for me to fully get amongst the feature cars that we have covered too. I’m loving having the chance to fully photograph them in detail like we do. It’s always hard to do that at the shows as you just don’t get the space or the time.

Our sponsors and advertisers have been fantastic as well. Being a totally new marketing stream for them in NZ, I’m stoked that they also believed this

would be an awesome way to show their support for the scene.

Definitely support them back as without these awesome companies our events would most likely not be capable of being held.

Something I have noticed over the many years I’ve been rocking around the shows, the entertainment that is now happening at them is awesome!

From live bands to hydroplane boat and dragster demo’s, it’s amazing what you get at shows now.

It’s been a big learning curve for us here as well, with Lisa at Kollide Design and Kyla at Simple Designs doing the actual magazine layouts, we have managed to figure out what works the best for you and us over the past year. These two have been awesome to work with and I can’t thank them enough for getting behind this to take some simple thoughts a couple of years back to what you see now as a fully active book.

I’ve stopped referring to this as a magazine. It never really was as it

was always going to be a photo album with videos. When you see the hard copies that we are selling now, they will blow your mind with the quality of the photo printing, along with how thick they are with the massive coverage of the events we have. I’m fully stoked with them too!

So kick back and get into this one. It’s massive too with some huge coverage of a couple of shows, plus the awesome Gasser Wars at Meremere Dragway. That was fantastic!

Keep following us on Facebook this month too. I’ll be doing lots of giveaways of T’shirts and random goodies.

day of horsepower entertainment with screaming V8’s on land and water, plus some awesome aerobatic flying overhead by a couple of classic warbirds.

Along the lake front carpark, classic motorbikes and static engine displays take pride next to a drag car with random start-ups from all and any stage.

Jazz and her team of awesome organisers have been running this awesome show day to raise funds for the local charity organisations since it first kicked off back in 2019.

What started with a few mates yarning about having a small car show at the lake, expecting a few more than twenty odd cars to turn up, actually turned into a full-on show with around 220 cars rolling into the Mangakino Lake Reserve to GET AMONGST the day. Since then, the word has got out far and wide with entries now having to be limited as the reserve could no-longer park all the cars.

The entertainment on the cards for the day now is absolutely awesome.

With the growing interest from the car scene community, locals and sponsors as well, this has turned into a full-on

Rolling into the reserve bright and early to catch the sun rising over the lake and the mist drifting across the flat calm water is simply stunning by itself.

Being in July, this hidden gem in the centre of the Waikato paradise is pretty chilly first thing, but as the sun gets up higher to warm the air, more and more awesome cars roll in to park up forming the lines of what is about to become a massive collection of around seven hundred cool hot rods, muscle cars and classics.

Retro caravans, Combi’s and all roll into this “bring-what-you-got show” which is fantastic to see.

These open shows like this are awesome for anyone to bring along what you’ve got. If it’s different, classic, historic or just straight out “cool” it’s all welcome to get amongst.

As the fields fill up with cars, the entertainment kicks in.

With the crowd lining up along the lake edge, mingling through the various food, coffee and merchandise stalls to sounds of a local DJ, first up was the wake board demonstration right infront of the reserve.

With some awesome flips and of course, spills to go as well, the scene was set for the big toys to drift out onto the lake. This of course was the hydroplane race boats.

The sound of screaming V8’s soon filled the misty lake air and with the calm water a few of these awesome machines were fair screaming around the make shift course reaching speeds towards 150mph.

Now if that didn’t wake your senses up to get into the day, you only had to look around at the hundreds of awesome cars

We’re back at it again at Lake Mangakino with this massive day out!

on display to realise this was going to be an awesome day out!

Jet sprint boats were up next to show just how quick a screaming V8 in a boat no bigger than your average dingy can turn and accelerate.

The lake valley fully echoing with the awesome sound of a V8 symphony was truly bliss for any rev head to get into the day.

Random prize draws throughout the day, and various on-stage entertainment kept anyone who just wanted to chill busy, along with the retro fashion pageant for anyone from kids to adults to enter and get amongst the vibe.

Live bands jammed out some awesome sounds as the day went on, with most heading back into the main area after checking out all the cars to chill, catch up with mates and grab a feed.

Around mid afternoon the weather started to look a tad threatening with dark clouds, so the prize giving and draws were held early just in case the

clouds opened up which turned out to be a good idea in the end, but it was still an awesome days worth before the rain fell.

The day doesn’t just end at the reserve with everyone cruising off though. Back at the local establishment, a couple more live bands rocked the crowd that wanted to stay over and get amongst the evenings entertainment.

More raffles and auctions of awesome prizes donated by the sponsors were held to raise more funds for the local charities and the party carried on till closing.

This is such a fantastic day out and is definitely one of the most action packed car shows you will get.

The majestical scenery along with all the awesome rides to check out, all packed into this full-on day of entertainment is a credit to the team that put this together.

The normally sleepy settlement of Mangakino ROCKS on this weekend. It’s definitely one worth getting amongst!

THE COUPLE Devine’s

RIVER FIND BRENT DEVINE’S

poking out the top.

Most people are excited by the thought of a barn find left by their grandad to turn into a hot rod, BUT not Brent, he dug this now cool-as 1928 Chrysler out of the Waiau riverbed, chopping out the tree that was growing up through the cab, dragging it home to turn it into a Rat Rod.

This awesome looking creation here started as a four-door car believe it or not. Brent obviously had a vision in mind and with a wrecking yard on hand, he went to work chopping and matching every panel on this cool truck to create what you see here.

The floor was cut and raised and the roof cut and dropped giving this sleek look of speed or if you delve back into your memory banks, the Rat Fink look of a tiny car with a HUGE engine

The back half was cut and re-stitched back onto the front of the cab and as for the bonnet and front fenders, well, they were never going to fit around the Big Block in there now anyway.

The rest was all up to Brents imagination.

Rummaging around the wrecking yard pulling out bits and pieces to turn what was left of the Chrysler into a drivable piece of auto-art, it was all go for the next year and half.

The Rat Rod scene is certainly growing here in NZ. From simple creations from spare parts laying about to full-on works of art with engineered art pieces setting the scene for builders to express their talents in a totally free way.

When you hear the term Rat Rod, generally it’s a bare metal or patina finish panels with a bit of old-school art

work, but Brent’s taken that to another level with the finishing here. The custom trickery and the manufacture of pretty much everything that’s bolted to the chassis is certainly awesome and well finished.

The engineering thought didn’t just stop with the look either. Under the rear is an independent suspension set-up giving this light little rod more drivability along with disc brakes all round to pull that tunnel rammed Big Block 440 Chrysler up when need be.

The grunt is fed back to the wheels via a shift kitted auto trans all tucked up into the cab area under more custom sheet metal panels.

The back tray may give it the pick-up look but it’s actually the work area carrying the beer keg fuel tank, chequer plate shroud covering the cooling radiator and the battery box, leaving the engine to

sit proud uncluttered by anything but grunt producing metal!

This is a very cool rod to see cruising around. The laidback grill, low stance and huge engine poking out above everything takes you right back to the early nostalgic drag racing days.

The “Punisher” and “Rat Fink” tributes certainly fit perfectly with this build.

I get the feeling Brent had this vision in his head since a kid flicking through “Mad” magazine, going “I’m gonna get me one!”

THE CAVE BUILDERS

SWAP MEET Matamata

PARADISE!

If you needed a special old part for that build going on in the shed, you had to get up REALLY early, travel for miles to some freezing cold rugby field to get there as the sun was only just rising, rummage through boxes of old parts to hopefully score a hidden gem before anyone else spotted it.

Of course, you had to have a pocket full of cash with you just in case you did spot something because someone else would if you didn’t!

Well, those days are pretty much done and dusted now, but it’s awesome to see that these events like the Matamata Swap Meet are still happening around

the country. It brings people out to get amongst the scene, catch up with old mates and get some tips from people who are on the same mission as yourself in the cave. Apart from that, it’s an awesome chance to clear out those parts shelves that we all have in the cave. The ones that keep growing until it all starts stacking up from the floor in front of the parts shelves! I’d say most of you know what I mean by that!

I reckon if everyone brought something off their parts shelf, we could pretty much build a new car on the day!

These days the swap meets have morphed into awesome full-on car shows.

Pulling into the carpark area full with awesome looking hot rods and muscle cars on display is so cool!

It’s more of an entertaining day out now rather than just a swap meet.

Heaps of food stalls were lined up to feed

the masses with hot food and coffee. Live bands jamming away throughout the day while you roamed around the field of cool cars or through the swap area.

All sorts of trade stands were set-up selling goodies like old tin signs and bits for the cave from flags to furniture.

Over the back by the swap area was an awesome display by local trucking companies along with some very cool old collectable trucks rolling in to make the row look very impressive indeed, including bulldozers!

The swap area was full with rows of old goodies for the cave and still a few good parts from the parts shelves for sale. Anything from car bodies to hub caps and bonnet emblems were up for grabs for people who knew what they were looking at.

Around midday, the stage was set for the retro fashion pageant. Open to all,

If you can remember way back to the days before the interweb came along.

from kids to the distinguished, this was the chance to get on the retro styles and parade like back in the era that these hot rods came from.

All sorts of prizes were handed out, kindly donated by the awesome sponsors of the event before the prizes for the entry draws and car classes were presented.

It’s a pretty full-on day of entertainment this one. Heaps to check out and get amongst or perfect to just chill, soak in the vibe having lunch watching it all happen around you.

It’s awesome to see these swap meet events are still happening! Morphing as they have is great for the scene.

Entry for the public is only a gold coin donation which goes to local charities, so it’s a fantastic chance for everyone to just get out and GET AMONGST!

HERS Pick-up

BIG BLOCK CLAIRE DEVINE’S

This is Claire Devine’s 1982 Chevrolet Silverado 454 Big Block Pick-up.

When it comes to a “his and hers” pairing of cool pick-ups, it doesn’t get much cooler than these two parked in the same driveway!

Brent and Claire’s passion for cool looking rides is obviously matched with a passion for Big Blocks.

I’m actually not sure which one is the biggest rev head here, but I’m pretty sure there is a touch of rivalry as to who is going to get back into the garage first by the builds that these two have created.

What grabbed me first about this fine looking automobile was the shine and gloss glowing from the fresh “Soul Red Crystal” paint. It honestly glistens in the sunlight but at the same time has an almost dark appearance with its colour. The chrome wheels and fat tyres fully giving the Hot Rod appeal instead of an old farm truck.

The box shape pick-ups of the Chevy’s have always been a popular build. These Silverado’s had the third longest build time of all the pick-ups in their era with a huge variety of build options including the choice of six different engine combinations ranging from the so-called eco range of the 4.1L up to the huge 6.2L diesel engines. Then you had all the options of four-wheel drive and different transmissions, plus short and long bodies!

Claire’s find here is definitely the cream

of the crop in my eyes. I can certainly imagine the gleam in her eyes when she spotted this version sitting, waiting to be rolled home and finished off.

That was fifteen years ago and as you can imagine, life throws a few curve balls at you over that time.

This now gleaming pick-up had to wait its turn to shine but as the Silverado name goes, it may have just been the silver lining. Hubby Brent had a few thoughts of his own with the truck to personalise it with some small custom trickery bits and from that came this stunning looking ride that no longer looks like your average run-about truck, but a staunch looking box pick-up with the muscle car appearance that simply jumps out at you. All this is thanks to the notched chassis dumping the body towards the ground and the reverse air scope raised on the bonnet boasting the

Here’s another one of those cool looking rides that just grabs your attention as you are passing by.

454 tucked in underneath.

The rear deck didn’t miss out either getting a full freshen up with timber finishing along with a heap of other items like a diff swap and new twin exhaust to poke out just in front of the rear wheels.

The rumble of the V8 is obviously pretty loud from just behind the doors as when you poke your head inside the cab, the first thing you’ll notice is the multitude of speakers mounted across the ceiling, on the doors and even on the tunnel. So, I’m picking there’s a fair bit of raging going on when this truck is cruising down the road.

I always refer to this shape as flying bricks. They don’t exactly look aerodynamic with that flat front, but Chevy did actually run these through the wind tunnel to improve the air flow over the body from the previous versions and with the 454 and small body, it doesn’t really matter about the air flow too much when that gas peddle gets pushed to the floor.

Claire’s no stranger to muscle cars having owned a few previously but the pick-up was always on the list to have in the garage. I’d say by the smile on her face when that rumbly ole big block starts up, it isn’t going anywhere without her partying up down the highway in it.

It certainly is a staunch looking and very cool package.

REUNION DRAGS 2022

THE BEST PAPER, SCISSORS, ROCK WAR EVER!

cracking that speed from a standing start to 402m down the road is mind blowing by itself.

How he gets into that machine and peddle that fast is amazing enough! But this was a stunningly smooth run to watch go down.

smooth with the odd shower coming through. The ole Waikato breeze soon dried the track off ready to get back into it pretty quick.

This was great until almost the end of the day when it just wasn’t going to happen no more.

As we missed out on the awesome Nostalgia Drags this year, this event here fully took care of the withdrawals from that happening.

With a massive range of classes ranging from the Gassers and FED’s right through to the Four Bangers and Flat Heads, the field of race cars lined up for the day was truly awesome.

Demonstration races with Karl Boniface’s Nitro Flashback Funny Car and the screaming Nitrohoon of Drunk Goat Racing made for an even more epic day of action-packed entertainment.

Karl laying one of his quickest times ever with a perfectly smooth straight run down the quarter mile cracking a time of 6.84 seconds, crossing the line at 196mph! That’s 315kph to the youngsters and

Along with all the competition cars lined up was a full field of early hot rods and muscle cars in the pre 72 fields. This not only makes for some seriously cool racing but makes pit lane and back carpark look massively impressive.

Events like this are just awesome to get amongst! It’s not only a drag meet, but a hot rod show at the same time. With the down-times during the day due to the weather not playing ball and the odd oil down on the track, this was an awesome chance to go walk-about and check out the awesome rides that had rolled in to just park up and get amongst the atmosphere.

The down times weren’t too much with the weather initially so the day ran pretty

Unfortunately, the final races of the classes missed getting run, so it was back under the shelter where the race action continued with some serious “paper, scissors, rocks” competitions to battle out the final winners of the day.

The trophy/prize for each category was an awesome bottle of Bourbon labelled with the Gasser Wars label, so some pretty fierce battles were going down for the winners to walk away with those!

This just goes to show how cool of an event this is and how the fun is still loud and clear in the old school racing world.

The races are run on a points system instead of a knock-out system. This means you get to race all day win or loose and just get amongst to have a

What an EPIC way to roll out the end of the drag racing session for the old school racers!

ball, slam some gears and make that V8 scream!

The Gasser class is fully growing in NZ! New cars are coming out of the caves at every event with more being built ready for next session.

It’s awesome old school racing. No technology, electronics or computer wizardry, just pour lots of fuel down that carburettor and slam that foot down on the accelerator. When the front wheels hit the ground again, just hang on and slam that gear lever as quick as you can.

The strange design of a solid front axle raising the front of the car is in theory to push the weight back onto the back wheels to give more grip. You either love it or hate it but it’s just old school cool! Plus, it makes for some awesome wheels-up action off the start line.

The FED (front engine dragster) class is always stunning to watch and definitely one of my favourites! Parking your bum on top of a cut down 9” diff with a leg either side of the transmission with a fully supercharged V8 at your feet screaming its guts out is just an awesomely crazy concept that you have

to love! The acceleration enough to lift the front wheels, dragging the wheely bars is incredible to watch.

They’re commonly called “Slingshots” as that’s exactly how they launch. They were a massive class back in the sixties but dwindled away with different sanctioning bodies, but it’s awesome to see them out doing their thing again!

Much like the Nostalgia Drags, a fair few arrived early camping up out the back to make a weekend of it and being ANZAC weekend, taking advantage of the extra day and not having to rush off after the event making for an awesome social gathering as well.

The awesome team at the Napa Autoparts Dragway in Meremere are fantastic at keeping the events rolling. The inclement weather didn’t dampen the days atmosphere as everyone was there for a great time and that’s exactly what was achieved!

The awesome team that run the Gasser challenge put on an awesome event here. This is definitely worth getting amongst if you want an epic day out!
