WICKED! What a month it has been.
The swap meet scene has certainly been full noise. They aren’t just swap meets now though, well not like the old days of boot sales on a cold foggy rugby field anyway.
These days, they are full noise car shows with the awesome rides that roll into the car parks and the entertainment that now goes on at them as well.
I must say a huge thanks to everyone that has been rolling up to me at the shows, giving awesome feedback about this book we put together here. I just love the smiles and enthusiasm you have as it matches mine! I’m not actually sure if it’s crazy or scary to think that? hahaha
It’s certainly a fun mission rolling around the shows with the cameras capturing all these cool creations you lot are building. There really is some cool stuff coming out of the sheds.
The quality of the builds is blowing me away at the moment!
A few years back a couple of mates and I shot across to Aussie to get amongst the Summernats scene and check out the builds there. That was an awesome trip for sure! Them Aussies go all-out on their builds and very much in the custom way.
Rolling around our shows here now and I can honestly say the build quality here is right up there with the Aussies now. There’s a few open days at the moment around some of the hot rod and muscle car build shops, so make sure you get
go check out what’s happening in the scene.
This month we have teamed up “Triplex NZ” who supply a heap of way cool goodies for builds that want to step it up a notch or three, or build a car that just wants to kick butt!
Check them out with our feature car and flick through to their website to check out all their cool stuff. Rhys from Triplex NZ will even give you a discount on your goodies via our Octane link in here. I mean, how awesome is that! So definitely GET AMONGST that offer!
They have all sorts of awesome anodized parts for your fuel systems to oil coolers and braided hose fittings. Very very cool! This issue here is jammed packed again. We’ve been rocking around some of the open days to getting amongst club runs and another couple of great swap meets. Make sure you jump onto our Youtube channel and check out our video coverage of these as well. Don’t forget to hit that “subscribe” button too. It’s free and keeps you up to date when we release the next videos.
Another awesome event coming up is the Autofest event at the Manfield Chris Amon Motorsport Park. This is going to be EPIC and runs very much along the lines of Summernats in Aussie with burnouts, show ‘n shine and track time. So check this out in our up coming events section and just GET AMONGST!
Anyways, enough of me!
Rip into this book and enjoy all! Thanks heaps and GET AMONGST!

MALCOLM GROWDEN’S
ROAD/TRACK CHALLENGER REP.
I can’t even remember how old I was, but
I knew it was the coolest car out right then!
I found out why the Camaro got switched into the movie years later when the interweb became available. That’s a whole funny story all by itself that one!
American car buyer but with that wicked Mopar engine slotted in up front. Any revhead with a buck would jump at owning one of these.
As a youngster, still knee high to a grasshopper and watching that awesome movie “Vanishing point”, knowing straight away that they had switched from a Mopar to a Camaro for just one scene. I knew then that these 1970 & 71 Challengers were going to be stuck in my head forever!
The long sleek stance of that body with the short roof, long bonnet flowing up to the two bonnet vents, catching air to shove down the throat of that Hemi engine, making it scream through that manual gearbox fully made me want one.
The Challenger models were developed by Dodge to take on the Mercury Cougars and Pontiac Firebirds at the time.
They were considered a Pony car, although Mustang had already grabbed the market, Dodge figured they would just build a car to kick everyone’s butts.
The RT model named as the Road/ Track model came out with a dressedup interior filled with extra options, plus you could order all sorts of engine combinations depending on how far you wanted to kick that butt!
They were aimed at the young affluent
Although two and a half inches bigger than the Plymouth Barracuda with all new panels, it is still a relatively small car when you are thinking power to weight ratio.
Less than twenty-one thousand of these V8 71 models were built including the RT’s.
With their reputation, a fair amount of them got trashed either on the racetrack or thinking they were on the racetrack. Not too many bulldozers were responsible to the demise of the Challenger, but it did make for an awesome movie!
I recall even at my grasshopper age almost crying at the thought of that car hitting them two bulldozers. Only because
This would have to be one of my all-time favorite cars and definitely drives the need for a bigger shed here!
I loved the car sooo much, not the story!
Malcolm’s Challenger here with the gloss red paint and black decals certainly takes advantage of them long sleek body lines.
Sitting on them big 20” rims steps it into a modern age of retro-mod with the other small modifications, but it still retains that gorgeous look with its stance of the body being dropped over the wheels.
The vented and slotted brake rotors up front giving that performance and ready to race appearance for pulling up that Mopar when she does get screaming.
Them Mopar heads punching air through the twin stainless exhaust sounds awesome when it’s rolling past, as if just begging to have the jandal shoved into it!
Inside, the seats have been upgraded to a serious pair of “hold on tight” seats from Jamex and the custom dash instrument panel matching with that modern appearance. Under that bonnet sits the 360ci Mopar with a few tricks like Ali heads and MSD Ignition along with a MSD center Injection set up to make it jump when the jandal calls.
This seriously is a gorgeous package of a traditional Muscle Car, brought into the modern era without taking away any of its grandness from the 70’s Muscle era. An era when Muscle Cars were just AWESOME!!!!

YOUR CHANCE TO SHINE... We check out Gordon & Claudia’s other cool ride. A classy yet staunch 66 Mustang Notchback
GET AMONGST A WEEKEND INRotorua
First stop on the saturday morning was at the awesome Toy Shed Open Day. This annual event coincides with the Sulphur City Rod & Custom Club’s annual pre-swap meet rod run.
It’s an awesome chance to get amongst the workshop and catch up with the crew to check out some of the awesome builds that are happening, as well as previous builds.
It’s not often you get the chance to do this with everyone being so busy, so to have the chance to wander about the shop and yarn with the crew is just awesome.
The workshop area is impressive to say the least. The line up of engines for sale as you wander in, and the bench covered with superchargers for sale certainly gets you thinking possibilities straight away.
It’s like every cave dwellers dream really. A multitude of hoists with cool looking projects on ranging from Hot Rods and
OPEN DAY 2022
Muscle Cars to a stunningly cool GT40 and a very staunch supercharged V8 race boat isn’t something you see every day.
Russell Lowe, the owner of The Toy Shed has been around the Hot Rod, Muscle Car and drag racing scene for way too many years to count! From staunch-as wild Camaro’s to crazy supercharged V12 model A’s and wheel standing gasser Chevy’s, if he’s not peddling it to make the tyres smoke, he’s behind the scenes so someone else can.
The Toy Shed also encompasses the front store with the Pro Parts franchise supplying performance parts with a huge stock on hand to just grab and go to keep the projects happening or wheels turning in most cases.
Wandering around the workshop and into the back rooms is certainly impressive to see what’s going on.
The engine room with the current builds underway is a cool mix of modern injection technology through to the good ole “get a couple of big carbs on there” old school technology.
With a fair amount of builds these days heading into the wanna-
be economical technology, these guys certainly are keeping up to date with it all.
I always chuckle when someone says they are going injection for the economy. As if the big cam, huge heads have no side-effect because the injection will use less petrol! Hahaha, love it! I do have to admit though (just quietly), it is a lot more user friendly as far as a driver or cruiser goes.
What a way to kick off a weekend in Rotorua in the Hot Rod and Muscle Car scene.
Seeing the straight six with an injection six pack hanging off the side made me smile. Nasty little sleepers they are for embarrassing the unsuspecting V8 owner. Out the back into the panel area brought on a whole new line of thought. The custom work going on in here with forming metal from chassis’ to fenders and dash clusters is truly awesome!
To see the work involved creating some of these creations before it gets covered up is awesome and shows the talent and skill involved to do so.
It’s a one-stop shop this. From engine building, panel work to building the running gear and tunning for street or strip, it all goes on in this huge workshop.
As it goes with these open days, the street turns into a hot rod show all by itself. They create an excuse for clubs or a bunch of mates to get together for a cruise and get amongst the day.
Olds-cool owners from far and wide roll in for this, making for an awesome way to kick the weekend off.
The Holden BBQ cranking away, cooking up sausages and onion butties for everyone and there’s even a bar on hand for the ones that work hard being back seat drivers.
Keep an eye out for the flyers for next years open day and make sure you get amongst this cool-as day. It’s a very cool wander about!

SULPHUR CITY ROD & CUSTOM CLUB Rod Run 2022
So what better way to finish up at The Toy Shop open day, than to rock around to the Sulphur City Rod & Custom Club to join in with their Mystery Rally Rod Run around the Rotorua area.
This is another annual event that coincides with The Toy Shed and swap meet and makes up for an awesome reason to head to Rotorua for the whole weekend.
Meeting up at midday for a good ole catch up with everyone like we do, it was then time to get lost. With a couple of sheets of directions and questions to answer, it was “game on”. Although, it would have been pretty hard getting lost as it became a convoy from spot to spot answering the questions, counting teeth on statues, number of antlers on signs and what not.
As per the good ole winter weather in Rotorua, the rain clouds rolled in right on time at the beginning of the rally. For the ones with a roof over our heads, this made it extra funny thinking of the ones that didn’t, knowing they would be hiding under a canopy somewhere because it fair rained!
Watching a bunch of rodders running around in the rain with a piece of paper answering questions and taking selfies in front of statues may have looked like a re-run of a Benny Hill show, but you had to be in to win!
These mystery rallies are an awesome way to see the country. You honestly wouldn’t have any other reason to wander up some of these country roads, but when you do, you wonder why you hadn’t before!
With stop-offs at cafés in the middle of nowhere to find what a logo is wearing to stopping at stunning secluded lakes to get a poker card, they’re an awesome excuse for a tiki tour around the countryside!
After a few more stops and a bit of head scratching, the rally sheets lead us back to the club rooms to get our final card for the game of poker, plus three more challenges to gain points for our score sheet.
Between scoffing a dry weet-bix with a beer chaser to throwing darts and playing catch while half blind folded, I’m pretty sure our score sheet wasn’t looking too flash. We did have a good poker hand though, but apparently it wasn’t the hand but the exclusive card that was required to win this one.
Luckily, we were there for the burger, beer and entertainment as our rally and game skills were obviously there to let others win on the day!
The rest of day was an awesome catchup with everyone before meeting up again for the evening party-up and live band at the club rooms.
These cruisy-as rod runs are great for getting amongst. It’s an awesome chance to get the toys out and go wandering, seeing new places, meeting new people and just having a good laugh!

ROTORUA VINTAGE AND CLASSIC CAR CLUB Swap meet and car show 2022 41st ANNUAL CENTRAL NORTH ISLAND
This annual event has been on the draw cards for Rotorua for as long as I can remember.
Held in the Paradise Valley Raceway, every winter crowds of people and oldscool cars roll into the speedway grounds, set up their trade stalls or tents, lay their goodies out to show what they’ve got to the prospective bargain hunters searching for the elusive piece to finish their build.
It’s also a great day for just roaming around a bunch of cool old cars with vintage, classics, hot rods and muscle cars filling up the center field of the arena.
It’s always been hit and miss with the weather for this one but on this day, the rain cleared just as it all kicked off leaving people to casually roam around the goods for sale, grab a bite to eat or a coffee from the various food vendors set up and kick back on a sunday morning.
It even seemed a good excuse to get the dog out for a walk for some. Or maybe that was an ulterior motive?
Being the sunday straight after The Toy Shed Open Day and the Sulphur City Rod Run, heaps of people are still hanging around Rotorua, so the swap meet is simply a continuation of this cool weekend to get amongst.
The swap meet scene over the years dwindled a fair bit with all the online options of selling spare parts, but of late,
the scene is kicking off again with more entertainment being the drive behind it. They have certainly become more of an outing instead of the ole boot sales on a cold wet foggy rugby field of days gone by.
I’ve always said, if we got all our old spare parts off our shelves that are actually spilling onto the floor, we could probably build a car in a day.
It really is surprising what gems are hidden on them parts shelves for that “one day use”, so rolling around these swap meets now when people do clear their shelves is pretty cool some days. The bonus being you actually get to pick the piece up and check it out properly. We’ve all had that part from an online purchase that’s bitten you in the butt and ended up on that part shelf to eventually end up on the floor.
There were also some very cool old cars for sale as well, so if you couldn’t find that elusive part to finish your own, you could just buy a replacement project, how cool is that!
The ole swap meet is a great way to wind down this weekend. With two days of checking out cool builds, to roaming the countryside and partying up, it’s almost a rev-heads dream weekend.
I wonder if we suggest a burnout pad? Hehehe just saying!

GORDON AND CLAUDIA COWEN’S
Gleaming sole
RED BARREL NOSE
without a fair bit of cutting and tucking though.
Gordon & Claudia’s 1938 Barrel Nose Pick-up here is one of the models you just don’t see rolling around on the roads very often at all.
Out of all the shows I have rolled into, I very much doubt that I would have seen half a dozen of these and definitely not in the condition of this stunningly good build!
Starting off as a collection of bits from the truck version of this Pick-up, the end goal was certainly fixed hard into Gordons mind after spotting another Barrel Nose while out cruising one day. Searching high and low for bits and pieces and with help from a few mates, all the bits started to fall into place. Not
To get the stance of this Pick-up looking low and not commercial like the truck version, the roof was chopped 2 ½ inches, (that’s 63.5mm for you youngins).
The entire undercarriage has been replaced with modern running gear to have it driving like a classy Pick-up should and sitting low as well.
The engine bay now holds a nicely dressed 302 Windsor V8 engine which purrs just nicely with that V8 rumble to fully take on the Hot Rod stance it now has. This feeds the grunt back to them rear wheels via an automatic transmission for nice easy cruising.
The Sole Red paint finish is simply stunning. Laid over a silver blue base, this translucent red finish gleams in the sunshine, yet takes on a blood red tint in
the shadows.
Wandering around this Pick-up watching the paint change in the light reflecting off the flowing, beautifully curved, big guards is quite stunning to see. The smooth mirror finish accentuating the flowing curves with each sparkle reflecting from the sun light.
To match this show finish, the deck has new timber planks with polished stainless-steel runners. The gold reflection from timber sits beautifully with the deep red paint and fully takes on the era of the old Pick-ups.
The interior has had the full custom treatment with new analogue gauges based on the same era with the letter styling. The modern front seat restitched to give the old era look with the convenience of a parcel tray and a center console to give this Hot Rod a practical cruising ride.
Now here’s a collection of beauty that you don’t see very often!
Even the stereo and door handles from the parts doner have been integrated into this build, yet it still has that nostalgic appeal that we all love in the Hot Rod scene.
This really is a stunning piece of auto-art here. It is beautifully finished with precise engineering and practicality as a Hot Rod. The old commercial look of the Barrel Nose now fully obsolete and replaced with a staunch yet very classy appearance with a ride of a daily driver.
This is Gordon’s first full-build project. Being a build from the ground up with doner parts from various vehicles and bits, you certainly have to give Gordon full credit for the outcome and what he has created here. It’s simply gorgeous!

2022 PALMY SWAP MEET & H ot Rod Display
You never know what you’ll stumble across or who you’ll stumble into at these meets.
The Palmy meet has been going for so long now, that it has become like an annual pilgrimage for some. Catching up with mates and getting amongst the scene again.
The roller door to the arena also opens at 7am and the que of show worthy rides rolls into the building to line up between the trade stalls ready to sell goodies. The bonus at these meets is, it’s only automotive related goods for sale, so there’s no lounge suite displays or boring stuff like that to get in the way.
Run by the Palmerston North Hot Rod Club, this awesome event has been running for fifty-one years now.
Yep, fifty-one years ago, an XY Falcon or HG Holden was a brand new car and worth a lot of money! Chances are you wouldn’t see one at a swap meet.
Today, them same cars are worth even more money and chances are you still won’t see one at a swap meet!
If you’re lucky you might find some elusive parts that have been sitting in the corner of someone’s shed, and that’s what these swap meets are all about.
The swap meet scene these days has grown more into full-on car shows with a more of a social side than just a car boot sale.
This one is definitely a full-on Hot Rod and Muscle Car show with a good sized swap meet attached out the side now.
Of course, the swap meet is the draw card, but the car park for olds-cool cars and the ability to show your ride off inside the arena building is an absolute bonus.
This makes for a massive show to wander around.
The swap meet car park opens up at 7am as the sun begins to rise over the field. The que of swappers lined up at the gate ready to get in starts way before that though.
Food and coffee venders are already set up and ready to rock, feeding the masses as the public and bargain hunters roll in.
Being Palmy in the middle of winter, a good hot coffee first thing in the morning is an awesome call for warming them hands on while searching for parts.
This years meet had a great display from the Outlaw 71 crew showing a couple of the drag cars competing in the Outlaw Class. It’s not often you get to see these in the flesh and be able to get up close to suss out the engineering involved in these builds.
Everything from paint supplies, engine parts, signs and even brand-new Model “A” engines were for sale amongst the
If you have ever imagined how cool a swap meet could get, then GET AMONGST this awesome day out! This is definitely a swap meet like no other one!
trade stalls. It certainly is amazing what you can find at these shows. There’s always something obscure you never thought you would get.
Up on the mezzanine floor overlooking the entire arena and field of cool rides is the bar area. This is also open for anyone to kick back and chill, catch up with mates and simply watch the world go by for a bit.
Wandering around the car park is always an awesome walk. From staunch-as Muscle Cars and Classics to awesome show Hot Rods roll in to park up for the morning.
Chances are, if you’re looking for that XY Falcon or HG Holden, it’ll be in this part of the swap meet if not parked in the show arena.
Come midday and it’s all go again. The gates open to the Manfield Chris Amon Motorsport Park for anyone with an olds-cool ride to get out on the track and
have an unofficial play. Supposedly it’s a wander around the track, so I’d say by the sounds of the revs, no-one got out of second gear.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it anyway!
You just can’t beat the sound of a screaming V8 with an under-bonnet blower wandering past you at top revs, being chased by a fully blown T bucket also wandering!
This really is an awesome show and swap meet to get amongst. There definitely isn’t any other swap meet in NZ like this one so I can see why it is so popular with people travelling from all over the country. I can also see why it has become a pilgrimage for some, it’s heavenly really!
Definitely watch out for the flyers for next years event and make sure you get amongst it!

Open Day 2022
Straight after your pilgrimage to the Palmy Swap
Meet is the Open Day at Kruzin Kustoms.
About midday the swap meet finishes up and the crowd heads off to Palmerston North to check out what’s going on in the custom build world of Kruzin Kustoms. These two awesome events have been coinciding with each other for years and years and makes for an awesome day out getting amongst the scene.
The crew there are fully involved in the Hot Rod, Sled and Muscle Car world. From building show vehicles to ripping down the drag strip in an FED dragster, their experience in the scene certainly shows through with how they put a ride together.
If you haven’t had the chance to nosey around their workshop, then definitely get along to one of their open days.
Being able to check out a build under construction and see the awesome work they do is certainly worth it!
It’s almost a shame to cover up the work with a body to be honest!
If you are into checking out the engineering in a custom build, then you’ll be impressed with what goes on here.
Having their own CNC machine to cut and fabricate their own bits & pieces is an awesome asset to have. The finishing and detailing that they put into their chassis builds and various components bolted to that chassis is meticulous to say the least.
The formed brake lines, custom hinge gear, profile cut diff & suspension mounts
along with a brilliantly designed secluded beer carrier are what makes these Kruzin Kustoms builds stand out when you take a descent look.
Their panel area cutting and tucking olds-cool cars into Sleds, air bagging and dropping them to the ground to be ready for a modern heart transplant is pretty cool. With these builds, you can certainly let your imagination go wild. I’ve always said “there is no right or wrong because it’s art” and that’s exactly what these creations are, awesome pieces of auto-art.
The open day itself is a great event for everyone to get together and simply mosey about the retail area checking out the shelves of parts for sale, getting ideas and seeing how the workshop rolls.
The bbq is cranked up cooking sausages and onions and the beer is cold and ready, so the afternoon tends to become a social event and not just an open day.
The street soon turns into a hot rod show by itself and makes for a pretty cool sight.
Being able to kick back with the crew and visitors checking out the scene is a great way to round off the pilgrimage to Palmy.
Some would say it’s worthy of a group tattoo even, for the ones that fully GET AMONGST!
