NOTCHBACK 66 GORDAN AND CLAUDIA COWAN’S

Importing it from the USA as a great looking car, only to find the shiny paint was covering a fair bit of rust, Gordon ripped into the refurbishment to bring what seemed an ‘old Jade’ back to the trusty steed you see here.

The new paint finish in the teal green is an absolute mission to photograph to show the true colour, but it looks stunning to say the least.

The colour in different lights and sun direction changes the appearance as

The detailing in these 66’s is truly awesome. The stainless steel bezels incasing the gauges to the heater slides and pull switches giving that ready to race appearance. The centre console with the ribbed panel flowing the classic styling through to the back seat compartment as if in an aeroplane.

Unlike most automobiles of the era, a fair portion of the interior is actually paint finish steel, including the doors themselves with the door cards only covering part of the skinned surface. This fully embeds the appearance of the race scene into the styling and works incredibly well.

the Mustang was first revealed in 1964, placed them as the most desired car of the time. The convertible models were in a league of their own and really only followed by the Impala.

Australia even picked up a few to turn into right hand drive models for the Australian market while back in The States three of these Hardtops were redesigned to become AWD non-all terrain vehicles based on the Ferguson F1 race car. Believed to be the first AWD vehicle including ABS based on an aeroplane braking system. These Mustangs were certainly the leaders when it came to driving technology.

The original 289ci engine in these Notchback was known as the HiPo

engine and certainly known for screaming their guts out and not exactly user friendly for cruising.

The 302 that Gordon has in this one is certainly fit for the course. It definitely has that nice rumble of that ready to race V8 but still very drivable at the same time.

Gordon and Claudia are no strangers to the Muscle Car and Hot Rod scene. We featured their gorgeous Sole Red Barrelnose Pickup in our previous issue.

Having the opportunity to climb over and under both of these cool rides with the camera, it’s easy to see Gordon is pretty particular with his finishing and detailing. His engineering background certainly comes to the forefront to have both these cool rides as nice drivers but ready to go when the loud pedal gets a shove.

Anything else you would like to add …

It was quite interesting, whatever was rusty on one side of the car was rusty on the other side as well. Fixing the cowl leak, I cut through the second vent slot in the cowl and removed the end section of the cowl enabling me to carry out the repair, increasing the drain hole size without removing the windscreen.

Stacy Emeny from Shannon did the finishing and was painted in Levin ($2500 ) pretty good job as well!

During transportation from the States, the top of the front guard was badly scratched due to someone placing a battery on it to start the engine. Plus the horn button was pinched so I made a replacement from a bit of stainless.

MERRY FATHER’S DAY 2022 Father’s Day Drags

NAPA AUTO PARTS DRAGWAY MEREMERE

With a current WOF, registration and drivers licence, you’re ready to go. Just grab your helmet and GET AMONGST!

If you are a frequent visitor to the Meremere Dragway to catch the awesome action there, you will no doubt notice that the crowd numbers for this special day are way higher compared to the standard drag racing meet.

Rocking into the venue this year was like stepping back in time. The hills looking over the drag strip were covered with tents and gazebo’s. Utes were backed up for tail gate seating and the crowd of spectators lining the ridge line took you right back to the hay day of drag racing with packed stands and viewing points.

Run by the American Muscle Car Club, this event is set down for the everyday cool car to come out and play. No slicks, Post 1948 USA and Australian V8 cars only. No imports or buckets allowed, and cars must have bonnets.

This may sound like you would only get your everyday family V8, but trust me, some of the builds that roll in are seriously cool street/drag cars!

From twin turbo V8’s to olds-cool blower set ups, for the spectators and racers, this is such a cool day! With a few cars cracking the ten second quarter and even into the eights, the action from the burnout pits to the peddling for traction off the line, the entertainment was awesome!

With over a hundred and forty cars lined and qualifying to battle it out, the pit lanes and surrounding car parks were like a hot rod show by themselves. From hot rods to muscle cars, heading off for a wander around was just as cool as the racing itself.

Of course, it’s not just for the dads either, anyone with an olds-cool V8 can get amongst this event. Sometimes it’s better if the boss doesn’t know though, unless it’s a BurgerFuel Fairmont Coupe and you manage to come 2nd in your class, then it’s fully ok to smoke them tyres up!

The action certainly didn’t stop for lunch that’s for sure! With a break in the racing for lunch, this was the time for the BurgerFuel Burnout comp and with a thousand dollars up for grabs for the best burnout, the competition was on!

Arnie Donaldson with the LOLIFE roofed chopped XC Falcon ute shredded a pair of tyres impressing the crowd to take away the prize money, but the action throughout the comp was impressive to say the least.

To catch an old HQ sedan shredding tyres in the burnout comp to then roll out onto the drag strip and lay down some

This fully is like Christmas this day!

seriously good times down the quarter is something you don’t see every day!

With a big field of cars to get through, the day ran pretty smooth considering all the things that can happen.

A small hold up with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter flying in to help a spectator in need slowed the day up a bit, but it was full noise in no time again with racing continuing right through to the end of the day.

The elimination racing right through to the finals was awesome to watch. Some seriously good peddling and steering was going on towards the end as the times crept lower and lower.

To watch a big chasis GTO Pontiac lifting its wheels off the tarmac and launching down the quarter is just gold. Then out rolls a twin turbo hatchback Torana cracking into the 8’s in a pretty straight line considering is just awesome.

You can tell it was fast run when the entire crowd says that very same word all together!

The rivalry between the American and Aussie builds was as strong as ever with the good ole Aussie hatch taking it out with an incredible run.

This really is such a cool day to get amongst. It isn’t officially a points day but more of a fun day, but the action is just as awesome as a competition day. The rides that come out of the caves to come and play for just this day at the track is fantastic. From show cars to hard out street / drag cars, it all seems to roll in for dad’s day!

Keep an eye out for this event again next year, it’s definitely one to make Dad’s day!

MASTER DELUXE COUPE 1938 Chevrolet

people do you know that have owned a car they built for fifty-two years? That is an amazing ride right there for a start.

Getting to actually check this build out properly was the second awesome ride!

Stuart slotted himself, sits an enhanced LS1 Chevy engine.

I’ve photographed this gorgeous coupe a fair few times now at different shows, but have never really climbed over it or under to see how much work has actually been done to this awesome ride.

This all came about from a request for a quick photo from Stuart and Gaye’s club to use for an upcoming show, but upon hearing that this coupe has been part of the Anderson family for fifty-two years and then actually having the time to take a closer look at it, I was so like “we need to feature this!” and so here it is!

Now how’s that for an innings! How many

I can always tell when I’m climbing over and under a car if the owner has an engineering background. The little differences that just finish the build properly as far as making it look good and at the same time make it work better like it should’ve worked in the first place are what makes it noticeable.

Stuarts background in stainless steel fabrication certainly comes to the forefront with this build.

This classic styled coupe with its maroon paint and single silver pin stripe along the swage almost tips it into the sneaky sleeper category I reckon.

Under that long-finned bonnet which

Now you may be thinking that there isn’t much room in there and you are right, there isn’t, but Stuart managed to make a set of 2 1/2” stainless headers to slot right in beside the chassis rails to give that Chevy upgrade some breathing room.

Up above the front cowl is the stainless steel header tank along with the stainless ducting to the Edelbrock air cleaner to feed the air and keep this sneaky build cool at the same time.

This all feeds the grunt back to nice automatic transmission for easy cruising but at the same time have that get up and go.

The suspension all round has been modified along with the steering and of course, if you are going this far, fourwheel disk brakes with a hidden booster

This is one of those “OMG, you’re kidding me” moments that really is like a once in a lifetime happening.
A SNEAKY SLEEPER WITH A LIFETIME OF STORIES!
STUART & GAYE ANDERSON’S

to keep things under control.

Now that’s a fair amount of upgrading for a 1938 Chevy, so not to be left out, the chassis has had a fair bit of work as well to make sure everything is tight and this awesome build drives like a modern car, but with the coolness of an old deluxe coupe.

Inside is another work of art. The upholstery throughout the cabin and boot area has been fully customized including modern bucket seats and new autometer gauges, but still keeping with the old classic styling of the coupes era with the wind up windows, quarter vents and the original door handles.

A modern stereo has been slotted in under the dash for them long cruises, but apart from that, you would think you were taken right back to a classy ole Chevy.

The paint finish in the dark moroon colour fits perfectly with the era and definitely plays along with the sneaky sleeper look. You honestly wouldn’t believe the paint is around eighteen years old now. It still retains its deep appearance and gloss and this isn’t a shed or trailer queen either, Stuart and Gaye drive the wheels off it to enjoy every second spent building this awesomely cool ride.

For being their cruiser for fifty-two years, that is honestly a credit to them both, this is one very cool build not to be wandered past without checking it out fully!

Autofest

Welcome to Springfeild

– The home of Burnouts, Skid Lane, Show ‘n Shines, Mullets and Retro Pageants.

HOLY, what an epic event this has rolled into. Autofest cranked up way back in 2016 with shows held in the Mystery Creek grounds in Hamilton.

Originally an indoor & outdoor show with burnouts out the back, this event has evolved into what I would say is the closest thing to Summernats that we have in little ole NZ here!

Moving from Mystery Creek to Manfeild and evolving into a full-on weekend of burnouts, shows and general partying up, this weekend is now one you definitely need to get into your diary for next year!

Everything is on site to just roll on in, set up camp and GET AMONGST! Our own “Springfield”.

With an area set aside for the burnouts, the rest of the area is free to load your ride up and go cruising which makes for an awesome chance to just park up and watch the world go by for a while as well.

Even if you do feel the need for a hell rev and a smoke up session, you can always roll into skid lane and feed it to the cheers of the spectators in the stands. How cool is that!!!

The weekend kicks off on the friday with set-up as well as track time on the Manfeild circuit before heading into Repco in Palmerston North for a night cruise and bbq.

Unfortunately, the track time was called off pretty quick this time with a nasty event of a drive shaft letting go, creating havoc and setting a freshly built blown

1 tonner on fire, destroying it in the process on the track. Luckily and most importantly, no one was hurt in the incident although undoubtedly gutted as we all know what that would feel like.

I’ve seen the video from the following vehicle, it is honestly incredible how fast it all happened!

A good line up of cars rolled out after dark for the night cruise. The team from Jokers Wild Kustoms had an awesome line up of Low-riders in the cruise giving that Southern California theme to the mix.

The rest of the camp kicked back and did the catch-up thing with mates or ripped into sorting the cars out for the next day in some cases.

Saturday morning rocked around pretty quick, but with the bonus of camping on site, the usual morning rush was nonexistent!

2022

The queue of cars rolling in for the day passes was massive though. That made for an impressive sight by itself with everything from old school to high tech rolling in to get amongst it.

The show ‘n’ shine area was in full swing by then with a wicked collection of muscle cars, hot rods and modern muscle in there to check out.

A good handful of new fresh builds rolled in for their first outing as well which is always cool! I must say the standard of finishing with the new builds now is incredibly impressive. Having been to Summernats in Aussie to suss out what they get up to there, the standard here is certainly up there now.

The bonus of events like this is that there is something for everyone to enjoy. If you’re into the show scene or “sendin it” scene, you can get amongst and enjoy it all. After all, we’re all rev heads really aren’t we!

Over the back of the camping area, skid lane was kicking off. The sound of a screaming V8 lighting up tyres made sure you were going to get out of bed because you wouldn’t want to miss this action!

Straight after skid lane was the most epic event of it all, The Mullet Competition!

I seriously didn’t stand a chance here, so backed away from the stage quietly to bow in awe at the impressive mullets on display.

As if calling all bogans, the burnout pad lit into life straight after with some seriously cool tyre shredding action.

The pad being small in comparison made for tight exact driving from the competitors but an awesome watch for the spectators.

Everything from screaming rotaries to blown big blocks and limiting LS’s ripped into it for the first of three rounds for the weekend.

Saturday was all about horsepower and screaming engines, from skid lane to burnouts, it was a rev-heads dream day!

Even wandering around the Manfeild track where the visitors’ cars lined up for the day seems like a full-on muscle car show, making for a massive display with a huge variety to wander around.

Sunday was full-on entertainment day. With skid lane and the burnout pad in action again, the main stage also had

three rounds of the Retro Pageant for Miss Autofest, plus rock ‘n roll dancing amongst the show ‘n shine cars lined up.

The Miss Autofest rounds included day wear to talent quests and evening wear attracting a great crowd to finalize the day with prizegiving for the show and burnouts soon after.

The setup around the track making up “Springfield” was awesome. You could either roll on through with your ride or simply wander around all the trade and food stalls checking out the goods for sale for the cave or grab a coffee and feed to watch the bmx and skate action on the ramp.

There really was something for everyone.

For an action packed weekend, being able to camp up on site and fully get amongst it all was awesome!

For a first time running the event at Manfeild as well as turning it into a fullon weekend event, the Downtime Crew certainly nailed this one.

You can only be certain they will look at nailing it even bigger and better for the next one given the awesome response to this one.
