The response and messages have been amazing to say the least, so thank you again.

I honestly had no idea how this was going to go being something new and totally out of the bag in the car scene. But my thoughts were, well I’d buy it, so some other car enthusiasts would too.

Plus getting to actually watch a video of the events would only make it even better!

As you can imagine it has been pretty full-on learning how all this is going to go and sussing out platforms to make it easier and have it all come together as well as it has.

So now with number one done and everything tested, it’s full-on into it, gathering more photos and videos to bring to you.

So last month was pretty cool! Another EPIC day with Choice Promotions over at the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park in Taupo for the annual Aussie Assault event. This is definitely an awesome day out with burnouts and cruising with the Big Three. As you can imagine, I managed to fill a few cameras up with a couple of thousand photos and heap of video again! Because it’s way too cool not too!

So keep an eye out in future issues for those to come out.

In this issue, we’re heading along to the Pukehina Surf n Sand Autorama. This is another cool show in an awesome spot that’s only going to grow in size.

Plus, we have massive coverage of the Mangakino Hop from 2020 which is coming up again in July, so make sure you check that out and get along this year. It’s become a very popular event to get along to now. So get amongst it, and see you out there. Thanks again everyone!

AUTORAMA 2021 Pukehina surf ‘n’ sand

Awesome day in the sun.

Well I finally managed to get to this awesome day out. I missed the premier with way too much on and then the onslaught of the covid cancellations, but everything aligned and it finally happened for me.

Stu Brickland created this event to help the local Surf Patrol and Fire Brigade with raising funds for their services in the area. Pukehina is a beautiful little sand spit along the coast in the Bay of Plenty in the North Island. Stunning beaches, awesome fishing and cool-as relaxed locals. Just like the old days!

It’s located between Tauranga and Whakatane and almost has that country town vibe to it with the cruisy locals. This event is a ‘bring-what-you’ve-got’ type

event and I love these shows. It always amazes me what comes out of the local garages! Whether it’s to support the locals or just get out for a cruise on a sunny day, everyone just gets involved and turns it into a full-on fun day for all.

The variety of vehicles always cracks me up. Parked between a full-on show hot rod might be a top end supercar or a full-on off road racing quad bike. In this case, even jet ski’s and a drift car pulled in to park amongst the field. Not to mention one of the rearrest Mercedes Gull wing door models I’ve seen sitting on the back of a trailer. The entertainment was all go with live bands, food stalls for the hungry, a heap of stalls selling all sorts of goodies and an awesome big shady marque for people to kick back, have a feed and a yarn, catch up with mates and simply watch the world go

by for a bit.

There certainly was something for everyone on the day! From Minitrucks to Rotaries, VW Combi’s to Choppers, but definitely an awesome display of Hot Rods, Classic and Muscle cars!

A heap of Street Machines and Hot Rods rolled in from out of the area as well, as the word certainly got out after last years event that this place is pretty cool.

For the second year running, the field was getting pretty full, so I’d say next year LOOK OUT Pukehina!

I’m definitely thinking it will turn into a larger event benefiting the local services.

Full credit to Stu getting this great event happening, it really does have the community spirit in it!

The man behind

Pukehina’s Surf n Sand AUTORAMA

Stu is the main man behind the Pukehina Surf N Sand Autorama featured here and has been around the hot rod and custom car scene for too many years to put candles on! That would definitely be a fire risk!

His Cadillac certainly does the miles getting around all the shows and really is a head turner with the custom flames painted to flow off the front guards along with the classic styling of the fifties era with big bumpers, big curves and a heap of chrome.

You may be thinking this truck is an unusual pick for a daily driver, but what better choice to have parked next to your 1956 Cadillac Sedan De Ville show piece than an even older

truck you get to drive on a daily basis that actually gives you the true driving experience of hanging onto an automobile!

Stu admits the truck was an impulse buy and needed a bit of a tidy up, but it is proudly the work vehicle for Stu’s plumbing business in Pukehina and certainly stands out amongst any modern trade vehicle which is ideal when it comes to advertising.

Stu’s goal to keep it authentic is what really makes it catch your eye. Even the signwriting is hand done with the old-style tuff paint that you only get one chance to get it right with.

The old Blue flame six-cylinder engine may

have come out of an early Corvette, but it still looks like it did when it came out of the factory.

The interior is still straight out of the factory right down to the wind out windscreen and hand controlled spot light mounted beside the windscreen.

You wont find a stereo in here. Stu prefers the gear box wine over one of those.

It even still has the Millennial anti-theft devices like a 4 speed manual gear box and foot starter pedal next to the clutch pedal!

I must admit, sitting next to the Cadi, the stock standard looking truck still looks pretty damn

STU BRICKLAND’S IMPULSE DAILY TO SHOW CRUISER...

cool and packs just as much fun!

The Cadi on the other hand, well that was a work of art when it left the factory, so adding custom flames over a pretty cool paint finish really makes it jump out in a crowd. That low slung look of the cruiser takes you right back to the era and in true Cadillac style, it’s packed with every little comfort you can possibly imagine. It’s hard to believe what they actually built way back in the day compared to what they can’t build now!

These cars scream hand built with all the curves and finishing details.

The engine department has had a bit of a tickle-up with the stock 331cu Chevrolet having a mild cam, Holley 600, remote control exhaust dump valves, Hi-Flow air cleaner, port’n polished heads and full balanced job done to it.

So the ole cruiser it was now gets along just fine looking pretty cool.

After the success of the first event, it was obvious this one was going to go off with more cars and people turning up.

Registrations for the day had to close off early due to the number of entries and the limited parking available. 420 registered early but as us car people do, we just arrive anyway making for a unofficial show up and down the road with even more cars.

Being pretty much central in the North Island, it’s an awesome opportunity for pretty much anyone in the Island to stop in for the day or make the most out of it, rent a house and party up for the weekend.

HOP 2020 Mangakino

Coming out of our National lockdown and this being one of the first major shows on, the talk coming up to the day was all about the cruise, catching up with mates and this crazy car family we seem to be in.

The cruise over was the usual Waikato foggy cruise but rolling down towards the lake was such an awesome sight to make it all worthwhile!

The hill was lined with hot rods, street machines and trucks right to the bottom field on the lake front which was fully loaded with more shiny cars.

The spill-over resulted in the top reserve being half full with the Mustang Clubs together making for a journey through time from the early sixties to right now!

On the lake edge was a cool collection of bikes from modern, American, classic and even made-up bespoke bikes built from stationary

engines in a Steampunk style complete with horse saddles as seats! These were actually running so you could watch it all work - now that’s pretty cool!

Hot coffee and food waited for the masses who needed to warm up and take in the amazing view across the lake before wandering about the show.

Music provided by a DJ gave the show a real festival atmosphere and the buzz from everyone finally being able to get out and about to go cruising again was fully alive.

4 Guys Auto Barn had a cool collection of modern American cars for sale lined up across in front of the stage. Being Mastercraft boat dealers, they also grabbed a locals late model wakeboard boat which suitably got dunked into the lake for a quick demo on how to do wakeboard flips in case anyone wanted to freeze just watching!

Yep, back into it for the second year running at Lake Mangakino again and what a massive day out!

The variety of cars at these community run shows is always awesome. It’s like everything comes out of the woodwork and it really doesn’t matter what it is. It’s owned by a car person and driven!

The standard of the cars was also way up there. There were some serious looking show cars lying around in the paddock which is awesome to see.

Throughout the day, different things were happening to entertain. The Mangakino Hop Pageant was on for all who wished to enter in retro attire. Cherry Diamond took away a sash with a cheeky grin and a twirl of her skirt.

The sound-off certainly drew the crowd in. Instead of a stereo sound off, it was open headers to rock the crowd.

Starting off with a VW trike before the rumble of grumpy V8’s took over with a battle between the Aussies and American V8’s.

You just can’t beat a grumpy V8 screaming!

Music to the ears that is. A good ole American Buick GSX took it away with the most crowd appreciation, and very impressively too!

‘People’s Choice’ for the day went to Geoff Kitson with his stunning 69 Nova. That beautiful chameleon paint and sneaky blown Chevy hiding under the bonnet being the crowd pleaser.

The festivities didn’t just stop at the lake either. Back at the Mangakino RSA, the Hop team had an auction going for some seriously good prizes donated by sponsors before Taupo band “40 Watts” cranked up the sounds and kept the dance floor full in party mode.

Over-all the team managed to raise around twenty thousand dollars of which one hundred percent goes back into the community.

The list of sponsors is fantastic and the prizes donated showing just how much support and backing the team had in running this awesome day out.

This is definitely an event to get in your diary for next year. I can certainly see it growing into a full-on weekend event.

Huge thanks to the fantastic sponsors here... 4 Guys Auto Barn, Star Insurance, ITM, Southpac trucks, Bus Stop Café, Lake Land Reality, Giggle TV, Maraetai Construction, Matamata Stihl Shop, Hynds Pipes, Watch World, No Cams, Spitfire Signs, PPG Paints, Aqua Heat NZ Ltd., Valve Solutions, Sweet as Popcorn, Z Energy, Spark and Running House Relocators.

So if you get the chance, get behind these sponsors and support them too.

So we shall see you there very soon. Registrations are open for this years event, so jump onto their Facebook page or website and get amongst it!!!!

DREAM CAR My Californian

I first spotted Kim’s stunning 1959 Chevrolet Impala Coupe at the Bay Rodders Winterblast show in Tauranga a few years back.

It was nestled in amongst some pretty cool hot rod custom builds but it just jumped out at me screaming “you want one of me!”

From the chrome bumpers, detailed polished grill to the long black slender lines running all the way back through the pillarless doors to the huge rear fins that look back at you like a pissed off bat with an attitude. I love these Impala Coupes!

Chevrolet certainly wanted the Impala to be the luxury, coolest looking street car of the era,

and they certainly did a damn fine job of it. The Impala Sports Coupes through that whole era of fins have a style of their own that makes them stand out in a show full of cool cars.

Sometimes I wonder what those car designers were on at the time with some of the styles that came out back then, but the art and style of the fin era is quite stunning and totally surprising to see that they actually built these cars from the drawings!

If you take the time to check out the panel pressings with the tail light and headlight junctions, you can see that the only way to build these cars in the era was by hand in a lot of places.

Back in the good ole days of melting lead and filing curves. They are definitely works of art these cars.

They didn’t muck about with the interior either, the styling throughout from the door cards front and rear to the dash components all carry that same arty flare with extra’s built in everywhere. From personal lights built into hand rests and all sorts of extra goodies to attract buyers.

Kim’s dream of owning one of these came true around twelve years ago, finding it advertised from a deceased estate in California. So with help from John Key, it was in a container and on its way down under.

There’s been a few thoughts of swapping the original Blue Flame six out for a V8 as most were V8’s back in the day, but as Kim says, it’s too original and such a beautiful car to kick about really, and I do have to agree, it’s pretty stunning as a two owner car and still original from 1959!

Give me the dirt…

MODEL: 1959 Chevrolet Impala Coupe COLOUR: Black (because there really is only one colour) ENGINE: 235ci original Blue Flame, bored out 60 thou, balanced, block decked 30 thou, cammed, custom intake manifold, 350 Holley carb, mildly ported head , Z28 value springs, extractors, dual exhaust TRANSMISSION: Original cast iron power glide, interesting fact cast iron power glides are one of the two automatic gear boxes you can crash start as they have two pumps DIFF: Factory BRAKES: Factory non-boosted drum brakes WHEELS/TYRES: FRONT: 15x7 Rally Wheels 235/70R/15 BFG Silvertown wide whites REAR: 15x8 Rally Wheels 285/70R/15 BFG Silvertown wide whites INTERIOR: Carpet replaced, rest of the upholstery is original
