WOW, so what a crazy month to celebrate our first year of this publication we have here.

It really is amazing to me to have the support and backing of our amazing sponsors and all of you who have shared, liked and commented on our Facebook posts this month. It really is awesome and I fully appreciate it.

It may seem like nothing to click on the like or to share a post you like, but it actually does a lot to help us get this crazy full-on publication out there for more people to see it. This in turn increases our follower base for our sponsors to keep backing us the awesome way they do!

This really is a team-like thing we have going. I don’t consider this to be just me clicking away to show you some pretty photos. The support and backing we get from our feature car owners to the event organizers all the way through to the sponsors is incredibly enthusiastic and helpful. Having Lisa and Kyla putting the actual articles together after I’ve scribbled something down and shoved a heap of photos in front of them is truly awesome! It wouldn’t be what it is without them!

To think a few years back I was clicking

away on a little old instamatic camera grabbing photos just to show a couple of mates. Thanks to our crap internet in the hills here and not being able to actually email the photos to them, the thought of a Facebook page came about to share the photos. Hence this is where the “Bogan NDog” page came from. It was honestly all it was for!

Somehow the page followers seem to grow in numbers to the point where I thought, “should probably do something proper with this” and that was it! The beginning of Octane Fix Online.

So a huge thanks to all of you who have been following for all these years for the encouragement you probably didn’t even know you were giving.

Anyway, what an amazing month! We certainly gave away a lot of fantastic goodies from Mount Shop! BurgerFuel backed us up nicely with vouchers for their awesome burgers, fries and thick shakes. TCM have also given us some awesome goodies to give away this month as well like t’shirts and very cool flags, so if you can return the support to these companies, please do. They are fantastic for our car scene.

I’m loving the feedback regarding our t’shirts and hardcopy books too. It has been awesome to see the

shirts being worn at our shows helping to get us out there.

The books are honestly awesome if I may say! I have searched hard trying to find a cheaper printer, but the quality of the printing is too awesome to skimp on, so they are what they are.

There is no bigger coverage of our events out there than this, so the books are two or three times the number of pages of a magazine, which definitely makes it worth it anyway.

This month we also have Andrew Cload and Pete from Pete’s Deep End Drag Videos giving us their take on the awesome finale of the drags at Masterson Motorsport complex.

This is super cool to have them involved bringing us more drag racing goodness! I just can’t get enough of the drag racing world. Love it! The Outlaw 71 series is true nostalgic bliss! So I’m fully stoked to have them involved with us. Anyway, that’s enough of me. GET AMONGST and get into it!

Thanks all and cheers Giggles (aka Bogan)

PUKEKOHE HOT ROD CLUB’S

SHOW 2022 Hot Rod & Horsepower

It finally happened! After a crazy year of on and off again planning for the club, the gates finally opened and it was all go for the members of the Pukekohe Hot Rod Club to get the toys out for a massive display of hot rod and automotive awesomeness to

These indoor shows are awesome. It is a chance to really show-off the artwork gone into these builds. Being able to display them under lights and set up in a way the public can actually see the effort that has gone into these builds from under to above is awesome and doesn’t come around often enough I reckon.

For a show that is for members of the club only, the number of awesome builds on display was fantastic and goes to show how strong the hot rod fraternity is in the Pukekohe area.

Bordering between the Auckland and Waikato districts, the number of cool cars in the area must be awesome as even the car park was full with cool hot rods, muscle cars and classics.

A good collection of old-school trucks were on display as well making for a pretty diverse show to wander around.

Out on the back field was a pretty cool swap meet going on. Everything from carburetors to profile cut braziers were there for anyone to snap up a bargain.

It’s good to see these swap meets still happening. It’s a great chance to wander around checking out what people are looking to blow the dust off and get off their parts shelves.

You never really know what’s going to turn up at these. Items that you may have given up finding to goodies that bring memories back and make you laugh.

It is an awesome chance just to catch up

with mates as well, you never know who you will bump into at a swap meet.

Wandering into the display hall was awesome to be doing again.

The entrance was set up with some very cool drag cars to circuit racers, along with a very cool land speed record car on display to fully check out the work involved with building one of these.

They certainly are an engineering art piece!

The variety of club cars on display was fantastic. From the pre 49 era to American muscle and cruisers, it could have easily been mistaken for a National Show with the standard of the cars.

The stage area was set up with more

display inside Indian Hall in Pukekohe.

goodies available to take home to the cave or get amongst the retro fashion with “Retro America” having a great display of their goodies for sale.

Junior Dragsters lined the edge of the stage which provided a great platform to gaze out over the rows of cool rides. The polished paint reflecting awesomely with the sun beaming in the top windows of the hall.

The show itself runs over the two day weekend with a late night on the Saturday, allowing heaps of time for anyone to browse around and get fully emersed into the atmosphere, either dreaming up ideas for a build or just admiring the auto-art on display.

This is definitely a great show to get along to. For a single club to put on such an event is awesome and goes to show the strength of the club scene really.

Look out for the show again next year and GET AMONGST for a casual wander around.

57Special

To me, Buicks have always been amazing when it comes to building a classy automobile. The extra detail they put into every model they built is incredible for the era. A lot of the technology they built into cars back then doesn’t even appear in a modern car now which seems crazy really.

of comfort.

With the wide bodies and the mechanicals centred more there was no need for flared wheel arches with these models. Wide rims and fat tyres easily slipping in under the guards giving a staunch appearance to what is actually a factory car.

If you aren’t and you are wondering what all the fuss is about, take a good long look at this gorgeous piece of autoart from 1957.

The auto designers back then must have had full creative licence when given a new car to design.

The only stipulation being to make it look more awesome than the competition.

The influence from the space race and the aeroplanes built during war time being the main influence in the designs, after that, it was all about comfort and grunt!

John and Debbie’s 1957 Buick Special is the 46R 2 door version and is a prime example of the awesome design work with detailing and style that Buick put into their automobiles back then.

The exterior styling fully taking on the fighter jet appearance with the moulded replica jet engine intakes mounted each side of the front bumper bar. The side trims replicating the side exhausts of a war time fighter plane.

The huge high guards allowing for the roof line to seem lower giving an incredibly sleek appearance, yet still having the amazing roomy interior that Buick wanted as part of their standard

The manufacturer of these cars is truly an art form that has been lost in most part. The front guards with the mouldedin indicator lights and swage line at mid pint on the headlight trim being handmade and lead filled to create the smooth aerodynamic flow to that of a fighter-plane again.

You can fully imagine one of these bearing down on you in your rearvision mirror with that huge grill and air intakes as if about to fully dominate you on the road.

The sides of the car formed with flowing curves as if straight from the

You are bound to be getting used to me rave on about the awesome styling built into the 1950’s automobiles by now.
JOHN & DEBBIE WILLIAMS’

wind-tunnel then highlighted with a red graphic encased in a polished stainless trim to enhance the flowing bodies design.

The interior of the Buicks are always outstanding. The polished stainless bezels and trims reflecting the aeronautic design again. The light switch and air conditioning blower switch gear designed to look like jet intakes and the heat control as if the power slide levers of an aeroplane.

The interior trim flowing with curves to match the exterior and every corner of the cabin formed with curved glass. These are an incredibly classy looking automobile to say the least.

Of course you couldn’t have a staunch looking car that couldn’t back up it’s looks.

Buick slotting in their Nail Head 364ci V8 engine to power this automobile along the road at a fair rate of knots. Backed with an automatic transmission as comfort was still the name of the game with these models. The fifties is certainly the era of cool curves and style. Graceful yet staunch in appearance this “Special” of John and Debbie’s is an awesome example of “cool”.

Cloudy’s Take

NATIONAL GRAND FINALE

So there I was, 15 years of age, trackside at Thunder Park with my Instamatic camera taking snaps of the coolest cars I had ever seen.

In amongst the smoke, the smell and of course the drivers and crews battling the Hawkes Bay heat, covered in clutch dust and oil, how cool is that.

Nearly 40 years later I have been given the opportunity to voice and bring to you my take, being “Cloudy’s Take”, on the New Zealand drag racing scene.

I’m not an ace mechanic or drag racing guru, but I have a view like everybody else, so hang on tight. This is my take.

After 6 years of studying and finding the right camera angles over the 1/4 mile, plus finding the right online platform I can now say “let’s Rock and Roll”.

I will be editing in Peter Isaac’s coverage

of the Deep End segment of the track, which will give us all the angles to complete the runs. In my eyes this is priceless as it will give us three different angles plus a water box camera for that start line burnout and all the start line coverage (Too Cool)!

In the coming issues of “Octane Fix Online” I will bring you featured meetings, crews, drag cars and driver profiles.

All these drag racing meetings are only possible with the behind the scene volunteers and managers working hard and doing everything possible they can to get everybody to the track. So a huge thanks goes out to them - you rock!

I have a whole new respect for these guys and gals with supporting JD Shepherd in bringing you the OutLaw71 Series. I’ve had an inside view of organising a series, and man it’s not for

the faint-hearted.

Right, with the intros and a brief outline done, lets get into the good sh*t.

First up will be the National Series Grand Final that was held at Masterton Motorplex on the 9th and 10th of April. What a ripper of a meeting this was.

The smiles were as large as the field of cars that were there. Everywhere I looked, it was evident that everybody was right where they wanted to be. Barry Plumpton (Plumptom Racing) and the Pot Belly Racing crew with “The Bullet” were in the final stages of testing for their upand-coming trip across the ditch to run at “Willowbank Raceway” for the 2022 Winter Nationals.

“Too Cool Barry, and all the best to you and your crew! You’re one Kiwi that can fly M8.”

Robin, Tamara and Cory Silk were chomping at the bit to get back out there after Tamara became the fastest woman in the country. Congrats on the achievement there guys and gals.

Nigel and Jodz Dixon were their usual cool, calm and collected selves as Bronson, formally known as “Chicken Hawke” tweaked the Kruzin Kustoms Top Doorslammer ready.

There was a rumour going around about Kurt Goodin having a hammer adjustment made on a Lenco to get going too. I think that guy deserves a crew shirt! haha.

After watching Gavin Green and the crew going through some testing times with the Angry Bird Pontiac in the past couple of meetings, I was interested to see if they had got it sorted and well, Boom Baby! They finished the season with Gav back driving the Bird and not the other way around.

With a very hot field of Top Door Slammers and the track having some heat in it, it started to come around that the racing was going to be tight and fast.

Tony Marsh from Marsh Motorsport in the Mavrick found himself looking for his sand bucket and spade as he made his way through to the back of the sand trap after his parachute bracket failed and released the parachute completely from the car.

By the way, at this stage he had just crossed the finish line at… get this 196 mph! WOW!

As I said on the day, once I caught up with him, “you’ve still got some driving in ya critter, awesome job”.

Over-all, this was a great turnout of cars and everybody was stoked to be back at the track.

A huge thanks and well done to Bob Wilton and his crew of volunteers for putting on an awesome weekend.

All of the meetings results you will find  on the next page.

So be safe, keep it straight and don’t leave late.

Cheers,

CHE WATT’S

AWESOME

PUMPED BEL AIR

This is one of those cars that simply captures you with detail when you are rolling past.

It simply stops you in your tracks to take a descent look at just what has been modified and enhanced.

There honestly isn’t much in this stunning build that has been left as factory, yet it all still looks as if it could have come out of the factory as a classy optioned Chevy Bel Air with the quality of the finishing.

Che picked this piece of auto-art up around three years back and went to work replacing and tidying up everything that he could unbolt or get to, to get this old Chevy back to the standard you see here.

The list of modifications is pretty long. With the American low rider influence

strong in this one, the body has been seriously dumped to the ground thanks to the hydraulic suspension with the 14” 100 spoke wheels tucking right up into them huge guards.

The massive deep front bumper almost shaving the grass with its low stance.

As if straight out of a Hot Wheels catalogue, the huge polished 671 blower protruding just above the bonnet holding them two four-barrel Holley Carbs and K&N air filters fully takes on the muscle car stance to let you know that this is definitely no sleeper!

It’s not until you start to wander around this car that you spot the subtle modifications that have been snuck in.

The twin stainless exhaust tips now recessed into the rear bumper to protrude from each side as if factory optioned.

The milled aluminium side trim swapping out the factory solid trim to show that

nothing is left untouched with this build.

The three round tail lights each side remain factory however, throwing back the era where cars were designed during the space race to reflect the rockets of the time sitting perfectly with the look.

The interior has had the full treatment with a multitude of speakers to pump the sounds from amps tucked away in the boot with the subs.

The custom digital/analogue style Dekota Dash is recessed perfectly in the dash as if a factory layout.

Of course the seats weren’t left alone with both being reupholstered along with door trims to match.

Under that long low bonnet is where the heartbeat to that supercharger sits proud. Once again the work completed in here is just as impressive to match the rest. Custom guards, billet aluminium pulleys and a heap of awesome detailing has the

355 V8 Chevrolet sitting proud and ready to rock.

The Bel Airs have always been a classy automobile. Kicking off in production back in 1950, Chevrolet kept the production going through to 1975 in the USA.

The 63 model here was their face-lift model with a longer wheel base so with being dumped to the ground, this Impala looks incredibly long and sleek.

The two-tone paint with the white roof tucking back into the bright yellow guards also helps to accentuate that long low body style.

This could easily look a sneaky lazy sleeper apart from the blower giving that “Ohh no you don’t look!”

Che’s definitely nailed this as an awesome street cruiser. The stance and the muscle giving a very staunch street look, yet hydraulic to join the street party!

Very cool!

AutoNAPAParts Dragway

ROUND 5 OF THE COMPETITION SERIES

2021–22

for up-coming dragsters to get amongst the scene.

2021–2022

Another beautiful sunny day at the Meremere Dragway as the gates open again for the public and the competitors to once again rock-in to get amongst the drag racing scene for the last event of the competition series.

We have all been hanging for some cool drag racing again, so it was obvious that this event was going to be a packed field and be fully rocking for the day.

From top competition to junior dragsters and motorbikes, it was all on for this one.

The field for the Junior Dragsters Comp was packed with a dozen racers lining up to battle it out. This is an awesome class

They might look like little units these dragsters but they fair pack a punch when they get up and go.

The class is for an age bracket from six to seventeen year old’s and raced over an eighth mile track.

Built as replica’s to the big daddy rail cars, these little units are still cranking out some good speeds. Fitted with an array of different engines from Briggs and Strattons to motorbike engines from 125 and 250cc, they still leap off the line when that light turns green.

Hamish Chauval with his 480cc B&S fitted rail cranked out a top speed of 84.47mph over that eighth mile. That’s reaching 136kph at 200m down the track. Now that’s pretty cool!

It still comes down to who’s the most

consistent with their dial-in times though as the competition is all about who knows their ride the best and just how far to push it.

Charlotte O’Sullivan nailed it for the comp win with an eight second pass at 80.94mph.

Four riders turned out for the day to battle out the Modified Bike Series with some awesome two-wheel action down the track at around 140mph through the speed trap at the quarter mile mark.

The Super Sedan, Super Street and Top Comp contenders are always awesome to watch.

This is seriously wheels up action with some awesome warm up burnouts.

The Top Comp cars crossing the finish line at speeds towards 165mph with an impressive launch off the start line to match.

How’s this for an awesome way to finish of the
competition series.

Drag racing is all about what happens on the day. No matter what prep is done and what the weather decides the track temp will be. It all comes down to that last race you are in.

Whether you get over excited and jump the green light into the red, lose traction for just that half a second extra or the craziest of things like your car won’t start! It all comes down to that last race on the day and if you are consistent throughout the day and the gremlins aren’t feed after midnight, you’ll rock it and walk away with the trophy. Even if you aren’t the fastest car of the day. This is a tricky one for the mind games as well. It’s easy to push too hard when your competitor with a higher dial in time is already halfway down the track when you launch.

The drag scene is certainly an awesome atmosphere to be around. Not just the sound of a screaming V8 or blower whine but the family atmosphere that prevails amongst racers and mates alike.

As everyone knows it all just happens on the day!

Full credit to the Meremere crew that run these events. There’s a heap of time and effort goes into these days and they keep it flowing incredibly well making for an awesome day of action-packed racing.
