This project is part of an urban reestructuration exercise, accomplished through the organization of areas for habitation , commerce and offices, as well as exterior spaces, public and private, paved or landscaped, completed by the respective accesses and parking. The proposal should include more than one kind of apartment and the spaces for offices and commerce should be related with the housing program and not relegated to separate or mono-functional buildings. A second phase of the exercise was centred in the in-depth development of a section of the project. The building develops into two volumes, in a ‘V’ shape, connected by bridges and the main staircase. The ground floor is dedicated to commerce and offices integrated with the public square sided by the buildings. The upper floors are duplex apartments of 2 and 3 bedrooms in crossover plans. The building is designed in dry construction materials except for the slabs; the exterior is like a metal skin combined with metal profiles and curtain wall window with or without brise-soleil. The image introduces the new city materials in this developing area of new architecture, where the historic city ends.

The project’s proposal consisted in the development of a museum without a specific kind of exhibiton in an empty terrain in the industrial area of Matosinhos. Similarly to the countless industrial warehouses, located in the nearby surroundings, it closes itself to the exterior, at the same time allows an enoumous interior freedom , flexibility and openness. The massive nature, suggested by the imposing steel walls, that defines the exterior volumes, spread a new web of alignments of stone and grass over the public spaces. The various volumes of the museum recreat the diversity of the industrial zone of the city. The glass volume marks the entrance hall, and the central courtyard gives light and breathing space to the corridor that distributes the rooms into each individual volumes, which are all different in spaces configurations. The outside is metal and glass, the interior walls are white concrete, and the floors are the prolonging dark stones slabs that come from the outside pavements to fufill the interior grounds, with the single rooms paved with dark woods.

‘New monreale’ patchwork

Monreale - culture of image

urban analysis, master plan, project Monreale, Palermo, Italy 2008/09 Palermo University, Architecture Faculty Laboratory IV of Architectural Design Arch. Monreale is a small town in the proximity of the city Palermo. IIt is directly linked with the city, historically and physically. Monreale is one of the main tourist attractions, it`s main feature is The Cathedral, but the city is also famous for it`s unique mosaics and one-of-a-kind feeling that you can get by visiting the small and narrow streets that are packed with surprises such as small churches and restaurants. The idea behind our project came from a series of analysis of what is Monreale. Looking at the morphology of the town, one could only have made an intervention similar to the development of what today is the image of the place. Because the evolution of Monreale is like a constant patchwork it seems natural to have our project work the same way. Why not take the free unused space next to the two piazza`s/squares and next to the Cathedral and make it an expression of what Monreale is, by making a Museum of Monreale, and a series of shops where you can buy mosaics and also make them. In This new square we would dedicate to the Image of Monreale, the bottom public square would create the phenomenon of Candelai Palermo, with bars, restaurants, and big dj tower for concerts and out doors cinema. The garden would be a manifest place, where the youth of Monreale would have a place to go during the day and night, a new garden with a new experimental theater and its workshops. The theater and the workshops would be an incision in the existent tall wall. To connect this three places with the Cathedral and the two existing squares, from the lines of the fabric of the city, we designed the descending platfoorms with the diferent material, and a funicular to beat the 20 meters of terrain diference between the new spaces. The connection would become a place where you would have different views of the place as each level offers a new image.

Enclosed within the perimeter between Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Via Maqueda and the layout of walls along the path during Alberto Amedeo, Piazza V. Emanuele Orlando and Via Volturno. The district Monte di Pietà occupies an area which, over the centuries, has taken a very diverse features: featuring, Galco ancient area, from setting military districts that border the first section of the Cassaro and down towards the sea, the decisive presence of the Cathedral and therefore to aristocrats and religious buildings, and instead of tiny business district and the underclass in the area where the marshes formed by the waters of Papireto made the air unhealthy, and innermost area of the district unattractive for the construction of noble residences. So, in the absence of the densest monumental emergencies of the other districts, the poorest housing in this part of town, even escaped the developments of the last century but no the bombing of the war, it has remained as one of the factors that identify this historical locality. Perhaps more than in other parts of the city it’s where the old filigree still transpires in the continuing work of changes and reconstructions, the mandate is today as the adjunction of individual parts.

Palermo is a city with too much history. Too much why? Because each step you take you bump into a monument. Most of them are degraded or even in ruins. Since the city bombardment in the world war, reconstruction is taking its time. Palermo historic center is overrun with monuments. For example the Capo market street has nearly 20 churches. So for the restoration subject, from a group of buildings available we chose the ex-church in Sant’Agostino, it’s called ex-church because after been a church, it was a school, and for the last decades it has been a shop. In this case a Chinese retail shop in the middle of Capo market. So after the recollection of data, the analysis was produce geometrically, hand registration of actual state, degradation causes, restoration techniques, and refunctionalization project.

The school is located in the peripheral area of Palermo, a residential zone where public space and good housing are scarce. The project restructured the design of the Kindergarten in full, the focus of the design in the hall, where the children drop of the things their carrying, before classes. The project intention transforms the space in a resting area, inside fun park with the distribution of the furniture, which brings colours for the space. So the created skylight brings light, to this northern room, which is filled with colour from the new furniture modules. The modules are versatile and functional, which are made from the base cube and a plank. Depending of the combination the modules can be a bench, a closet or a coat hanger.

‘The red between / il rosso fra’ dance in the ex-station of sant’erasmo scenography design for “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” ex stazione di sant’erasmo, Palermo, Italy 2008/09 Palermo University, Architecture Faculty scenography Arch. Vesco Maria Isabella http://issuu.com/odinon_silva/docs/cenografia_rosso_fra/

The theme I most want to explore with my interpretation of the fable is not only of Alice’s morals or her growing up, but more to focus on Alice’s unravel of the duplicities of characters of the assailing personages. The characters appear always on the story as the black and white notions of reality, the extremes are explored as the characters balance themselves from good or bad, in-between there is Alice the innocent growing child, that the only escape from madness is to ask why... So I envision wonderlands as the world of revolving criteria were something can always be two at the same time, as white and black, never become grey, but coexist on the same field plane, with only Alice conscience to navigate between...So the picture between black and white, if there is no grey, something else must exits. I depict the colour red as to use it, to impact on the viewer the dramatic imposition of the non existent grey...Therefore the name “the red between”... The matter of the created stage for the story is, first the need of spaces and platforms for the various registrations and movements of the characters, and as conceptualizing the view of their constantly changing and revolving scenarios that seem to assault the fable, I conceived circular forms as ramps of different length as well a centrepiece in scripted in a circular for that bases on a spiral, all of the platforms inscribed in tow circular drawings that delimited the stage as well provide stage scenario for the action... The idea of the conception of the platforms come from, that the same ones are built in a plastic material that allows illumination from under the stages, being this the primordial means of illuminating the characters from under, depicting the more dramatic effects of the light...Also as various use of Semi-transparent cables that hang from above that the configurations allow to do various cylinders spread among the scene, as well the semi circular curtain behind the stage that provides background, as well in the centre piece of the scene is produces a bigger cylinder where the intentions is to project the image of the main character in overgrown state, so in this way to depict the changes of size of Alice in her dwellings in wonderland...This cables/strings are cables that in the various scenes acquire different colours through overhead lightning, changing the ways of the scene, producing different interactions and subjects changing in the history... The scenography is a personal interpretation, as well the intent to minimalize the spaces and interferences in the story from objects, depicting the characters in their fullest as well to provide tools so that throught simplifying means to retain from the viewing the bases and the essence of the story, that I consider more important than the total fable in it self...

Abstract

« Architecture, Scenography and Dance are disciplines that apparently don’t connect with each other. This essay is conceived in order to show those connections and relationships. Although these disciplines converge in some points it is not clear how they face each other. In the theatrical stage architecture is challenged accordingly to its spatial and formal characteristics, a structural sense is always present, functionality and scale in the production of design and construction. The scenography design, to experiment with strong metaphorical language, is certainly attractive to an architect, as an experimental space, for his theories that he can’t always achieve in his day-to-day. In this sense, the theater is seen as a domain offering a wide range of action of an experimental nature. The scenic devices on stage suggest and allude to the reality that is proposed in the scene. The architectural structures a conceptual and formal support, in this scenography design, positioning itself in favor of a particular theatrical concept. In fact, scenographers are required to build a space where actors or dancers can recite, sing and dance freely, a space that is not always the scenic stage of a theater.

‘Architecture and Scenography’, the ‘Body in Motion’ and ‘Dancing on the Architectural Scenography’ are subjects that are part of the decomposition of the term holder of this essay. Walking the relationship between architecture and theater scenography, through history and evolution of the theater, we want to deduce their concepts, definitions and interpretations. Addressing the Dance, reflecting on its origins and developments, we seek to understand the theories of motion within the human body, and its choreographical expression. Exploring the work of the choreographer Frédéric Flamand, in order to understand the why of architecture in dance performances and how these relationships create scenographies of experimental interest for study, as productions that alter the perception of dance and theater design space for body movement. Frédéric Flamand firmly sustains the need for people from different disciplinary areas to come together in order to explore new forms of expression, searching for structure and different answers. It also states that it is necessary the progressive ‘hybridization’ and ‘peeling’ of etiquette boundaries and language codes, search for new openings and alternative canons to surprise with new performances. Society today lives of shapes, images, and through their forms of expression manifests a creative freedom that is also common to scenography of dance. Working in theater the architect intends to design something that constitutes a chance in the attempt to expand the understanding of architecture. »
