Understanding Hormones Come along to our FREE seminar on Wednesday 24th February from 7:00pm to help understand your hormones! The hormones that are in your body have a dramatic effect on the major functions and processes you deal with on a daily basis. Some of them you will have heard of and know a little bit about, some you’ve probably not heard of and didn’t know that they can influence the way you live. Insulin Insulin regulates the amount of sugar in the body and controls these levels. Unfortunately if you eat a diet high in simple sugars and refined carbohydrates then your insulin levels will spike throughout the day which can lead to a drop in insulin sensitivity and cause weight gain. Fix – Limit the amount of processed foods and refined carbohydrates. Eat more vegetable and whole foods and this will aid your insulin sensitivity. Glucagon This works in partnership with insulin and is released when your blood sugar starts to drop (the opposite of insulin). During long endurance exercise glucagon will be released and will start to utilise your fat storage for energy production. To maintain a good harmony between insulin and glucagon follow the same steps by limiting the amount of processed foods,

refined carbohydrates and by eating more vegetable and whole foods. Cortisol Stress and cortisol go hand in hand, and cortisol and belly fat go hand in hand. Anytime you’re faced with a stressful situation, your body pumps out cortisol to meet the challenge. Cortisol encourages your body to hold on to visceral fat— that spare tyre around your waist— and it also drives you towards sweet and salty foods to quell the tension you feel (they release pleasure-inducing chemicals in the brain) Fix – cut down on coffee. Caffeine triggers the adrenal glands to release cortisol. Ghrelin Produced in your stomach, ghrelin is your hunger hormone. If you skip a meal, your ghrelin levels rise and make you ravenous, making it nearly impossible for you to resist the next food item you see. Fix – Don’t skip meals and ensure you’re eating some protein within each meal. Protein lowers the ghrelin levels in the body. Leptin A hormone that helps to tell you that you’ve had enough to eat. Unfortunately as we age the levels of leptin decrease and we are more susceptible to Leptin sensitivity. Fix – Have a diet that includes omega-3 (oily fish). Alternatively seek out some good quality omega 3 supplements. Additionally make sure you get your full quota of sleep as lack of sleep decreases your leptin levels and increases ghrelin (hunger hormone).

Serves 4 • • • • • • • •

2 butternut squash (reserve seeds) 200g carrot 1 onion 2 sticks of celery (peeled) 3 cloves of garlic A sprig of thyme A sprig of rosemary 1.2l chicken/vegtable stock

Cut squash in half lengthways and reserve the seeds. Roast in a hot oven (210°C) until flesh becomes caramelised (3040min). Next, thinly slice the carrot, onion, celery and garlic and cook gently in a pan with the thyme and rosemary until translucent (5-10mins). Remember to remove the sprigs of herbs.

Once the squash is cooked, carefully remove the flesh from the skin and add to the pan. Add the stock and bring to a simmer for 5 mins. Meanwhile, gently toast the squash seeds under a grill. Finally blend the soup mix until smooth and serve in your favourite soup bowl. Finish with a few scattered toasted seeds.

Bon appetit!

I Swim...

...Therefore I Gym

“Swimmers need dryland training to improve their ability in the water.” Joe Mahon Swimming requires a combination of upper body, lower body and core strength. Making sure you are strong in each of these areas is paramount to improve both strength and endurance in swimming as well as preventing injury. Try these exercises and see your swimming improve immediately... 1. Lat pull downs (3-4 sets of 8-12) Lats are so important for swimmers. They are responsible for a strong stroke and propelling your body forward. Increasing strength in the lats will allow for a stronger pull whilst increasing endurance which will allow the muscles to work harder for longer. Lat pull downs also mimic actual strokes used in swimming: breaststroke, front crawl and butterfly. 2. Squats (3-4 sets of 8/12) Leg strength is very important in swimming. All strokes use legs, therefore both strength and endurance are needed: (e.g. pushing off the wall in a tumble turn or diving off the blocks for a start). Increasing the strength of the knee extensors transfers to improved force generation and endurance when kicking, throughout all 4 strokes. Squats also strengthen the gluteal muscles which are used in breaststroke kick.

3. Shoulder exercises (1 minute for each exercise then progress) In swimming, the muscles in the shoulder are moving in all planes of motion and shoulder injuries are among the most common in swimmers. Try these exercises for prehabilitation to prevent injury and increase strength (can be done with resistance bands or pulley machine). These exercises all work the targeted area in different planes of motion as in each stroke the shoulder moves in a different way. Shoulder Extension – extend shoulders out in front of body External Rotation – rotate arm away from body Internal Rotation – rotate arm across body Y and T Fly – extend arms above body in a ‘Y’ and ‘T’ position: strengthens muscles between shoulder blades. Learn how to make the most out of your gym sessions with Joe Mahon, Odyssey fitness coach and qualified swimming instructor. Our brand new Swim Fit course is the perfect recipe for your swimming success... you just have to add water.

Saturday 12th March 7:20pm - 9:30pm Odyssey Health Club Stevenage SG2 8DU ÂŁ12

Event organised by DateDateDate - www.datedatedate.co.uk

Speed Dating 30+ Dating Event Speed dating is an exciting way to meet members of the opposite sex in a fun, safe environment – and have a great evening out at the same time. Just think, in one evening of speed dating, you may meet as many as 15 potential partners – this might take you months through the usual route of going to pubs, clubs and parties. No more evenings spent wondering if someone you’ve seen is single or not – speed dating is a very time-efficient and focused way of meeting other single people who most likely live nearby. No laborious emailing or wondering how someone really is, speed dating gives you the opportunity to decide who you connect with in person and who you’d like to have a REAL date with – and it’s fun! The only person who can decide who is for you – is YOU… there is no more effective way to meet LOTS of potential partners – face to face and in person – in just one evening. The only requirement to attend a DateDateDate speed dating event is that you are unattached – which means the people you meet have also declared themselves so.

at The Odyssey Health Club How Does Speed Dating Work? On The Evening Arrive at your event around 7:20 p.m. meet your DateDateDate event organisers and grab yourself a drink from the bar. Everyone is given a sticky label to wear, showing their name and unique number. You will also be given a pen and a speed dating sheet, which details the process and has dating tips. At around 7:30 p.m the speed dating begins. Each lady takes her seat at her allocated table. Once they are ready, the men join them at their individually allocated starting table. A bell rings to start the first round of chats. After 3 to 4 minutes of chatting, a bell is rung for the men to move on to the next table – this continues until everyone has had the chance to meet and chat. Once the speed dating has finished, you will be given a personal contact sheet. Use this sheet to list those who have caught your eye. Be sure to hand this back to the organisers before you leave! The Follow Up The next day, DateDateDate analyses all of the contact sheets. If you have listed someone who has also listed you – it’s a match! We will notify you of your matches by phone the next day. – the rest is up to you!

To book your place - call 01438 313320

We strongly recommend early booking to be sure of a place If you are unattached, aged 30+ and live near Herts or Bucks, then this is the night for you!
