The Journey Continues... There have been some significant changes happening in the gym over recent weeks and we wanted to keep you informed and up to date with the exciting news. Alongside the new Technogym equipment we have completely upgraded the software on the gym floor and made it much more interactive with the gym team. If you haven’t downloaded your Wellness App and started tracking your Moves throughout the day, not just in the gym, then please ask one of the team who will be more than happy to help. Personal Training It has been part of our long-term strategy to recruit and retain the best staff we can. The fitness coach/personal training model we had wasn’t allowing us to achieve this. We wanted to allow each trainer to develop but moving to become self employed meant we were losing great staff we wanted to keep part of our team. Although a difficult decision, we felt we needed to make a change for the benefit of members and coaches. Towards the end of last year we took the first step to change the current model and adopt a broader approach to our fitness team. Through our training provider Faster Global (www. fasterglobal.com), we have introduced a new system that will standardize the knowledge across

the team, improve the delivery of personal training and keep more of the team together under the Odyssey umbrella. Faster Global have the knowledge and experience to create a career path for the team to advance their skills as far as they want to go. John Hardy, owner of Faster, has an impressive background in working with a wide range of clients from elite athletes to specific injuries. Some highlights are: • UK’s and world’s first trainer to be qualified by the NASM in CPT, PES, SFS and IFS collectively • UK’s and world’s first group of trainers to complete the NASM and CUP MSc Injury Prevention and Performance Enhancement • Clients from Ultramarathon runners, professional and international soccer players, A-List celebrities, high end business executives to regular everyday clients. I’ve seen John in action and his depth of knowledge will give the team an added dimension and
place them amongst the best in the industry. As Ian Riches, Club Director states: “At a time when most clubs are moving away from employed coaches, we firmly believe the fitness team are the heart of the club and we are investing heavily into making them the best they can be.” As part of our redevelopment of the Personal Training at Odyssey, we will also be launching its very own website and there will be lots of new content, videos and information to support your 1-1 or small group training! Vegetarianism How to balance your diet as a vegetarian...
Eating is a necessity but what we eat is a choice. Some people choose not to eat meat for a number of reasons and we often get asked what the pros and cons of being a vegetarian are. The fact that there are international athletes that compete at the very highest level following a vegetarian, and in some cases vegan, diet so it’s fair to say that there are no reasons why it will have a detrimental effect. 1. Where do I get my protein from? Well, protein can be found in many non meat sources – these are our favourites: Quinoa – a real superfood. This seed is one of the few foods that contain all the essential amino acids. Chickpeas or lentils – another great source of protein and staple for any vegetarian stew, casserole or curry. Brussel Sprouts – yes that great British winter veg is a good source of vegetable protein. It doesn’t need to be boiled to death, it can shredded, steamed, roasted and stir-fried. 2. Don’t just rely on dairy for your fat. You need to make sure you’re eating ‘good’ fats so it’s really important to add these
into your diet. Go for nuts and avocados as snacks or as a part of a main meal. 3. Vitamin B12 can be a problem You’re going to struggle getting B12 into your diet if you don’t eat meat unless you go down the kelp or seaweed route. The media will tell you to get B12 from fortified cereals but continued consumption of cereals can then lead many health problems so this wouldn’t be the preferred option. A good quality supplement for B12 may be the best way to get around this. 4. Choose colourful foods Vegetables of all different colours will give you the broadest range of macronutirents, vitamins and minerals. Whether you choose to eat meat or not, eating a good range of quality vegetables is vital for maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. Spicy Root & Lentil Casserole To tie in with our focus on vegetables this month, here’s a perfect dish that can be put together in less than an hour. Whilst we eagerly await the bright new flavours and warming sunshine of Spring, here’s a hearty, warming meal suitable for the whole family.
Ingredients • 2 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil • 1 onion, chopped • 2 garlic clove, crushed • 700g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks • 4 carrot, thickly sliced • 2 parsnip, thickly sliced • 2 tbsp curry paste or powder • 1 litre/1¾ pints vegetable stock • 100g red lentils • a small bunch of fresh coriander, roughly chopped • low-fat yogurt • naan bread, to serve
Method 1. Heat the oil in a large pan and cook the onion and garlic over a medium heat for 3-4 minutes until softened, stirring occasionally. Tip in the potatoes, carrots and parsnips, turn up the heat and cook for 6-7 minutes, stirring, until the vegetables are golden. 2. Stir in the curry paste or powder, pour in the stock and then bring to the boil. Reduce the heat, add the lentils, cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the lentils and vegetables are tender and the sauce has thickened. 3. Stir in most of the coriander, season and heat for a minute or so.Top with yogurt and the rest of the coriander. Serve with naan bread.
