by Bradley Crichton, resident Osteopath A WHOLE BODY APPROACH
Osteopaths spend four to five years training to understand the relationship between the body’s organs, joints and muscles and are experienced in treating disorders of the musculoskeletal structures throughout the whole body. Osteopathy is a person centred approach that strives to provide the optimum conditions for health by working with your body’s own healing mechanisms to achieve results. Osteopaths see people of all ages, including pregnant women and elite athletes. The health risks associated with having osteopathic treatment are extremely low, if you have any concerns about the safety of your treatment your osteopath will be happy to discuss these with you. THE ASSESSMENT Musculoskeletal problems are common and often painful and debilitating. It is natural to worry about your symptoms, and your osteopath will always discuss your concerns as part of a routine examination and will discuss your treatment options with you. At the start of your first session, your osteopath will take time to listen to you and ask questions about your symptoms, diet, general health, activities and lifestyle. This will help them to make an accurate diagnosis and suggest appropriate treatment(s) that you can consider. They will then examine the area(s) of your body causing discomfort, which might include tests such as taking your blood pressure or testing your reflexes. Sometimes the cause of the problem may be in a different area to the pain, so they may examine your whole body. Your osteopath will feel for changes in your muscles and joints and examine these areas to identify problems. They may also assess your posture and the way you move.

Call 01438 222222 for more details Most osteopaths will begin your treatment at your first appointment, but sometimes they may suggest that you seek further tests first, for example blood tests or scans. Occasionally they may suggest that you consult your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional if osteopathy is not suitable for you.
YOUR TREATMENT Osteopaths use a wide range of gentle hands on techniques. Treatment varies between patients depending on your age, fitness and diagnosis, but often focuses on releasing tension, stretching muscles and mobilising joints. Before you receive treatment your osteopath and you will jointly decide an appropriate and suitable treatment plan. Occasionally osteopathic techniques can result in an audible ‘click’, this is perfectly normal. Research evidence shows that these manipulations can have beneficial effects, especially in the back, helping you to return to normal activity.
WHO RECOGNISES OSTEOPATHY? The UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommends spinal manipulation for lower back pain. Osteopaths are trained to deliver such treatment and offer self-management advice. For any questions relating to Osteopathy and how I may be able to help you, contact me directly: call:

The General Osteopathic Council regulates the practice of osteopathy in the UK, promoting patient safety by setting and monitoring standards of osteopathic conduct. By law, an osteopath must be registered and comply with strict regulatory requirements. This gives patients the same sort of guarantees and protection as those given by doctors and dentists.

FATS Diet & Nutrition
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly!
Certain fats are extremely good for you. These fats convey abundant benefits and eating them in a balanced fashion aids in the achievement of a lean and chiseled body composition. They promote optimal health and support hormone balance when included as part of a whole food diet that is limited in carbohydrates.
Scientific studies show that the body processes the assorted types of fat very differently. The body does not store the essential fatty acids (EFAs), such as the omega-3 fats found in fish and flaxseeds, as fat in the body. The body likes to use these fats to make hormones and build the lipid layer of cells.
These fats, which include a diverse array of fatty acid profiles, provide massive amounts of essential nutrients. Research suggests eating these fats can promote optimal leanness and aid in the prevention of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Certain of these fats have also been shown to be antimicrobial, improve digestion, and enhance protein synthesis in response to strength training, while reducing muscular soreness.
The effect is that eating the omega-3 fats will raise energy expenditure, leading you to burn more calories than you would otherwise. For example, a study of overweight men found that when they increased their omega-3 intake from 0.43 g/day to 2.92 g/day, they experienced a 51 percent increase in the amount of calories they burned after eating.
The Right Fat Will Not Make You Fat, But It Might Make You Lean Eating “healthy” fats won’t make you fat. Rather, they can improve body composition and make you leaner. Strange but true since everybody knows that fats contain a lot of calories—nine per gram. Fat is more calorie dense than protein, carbs, and alcohol.
Fat is very filling. When included in a low-carb, high-protein diet, it is difficult to overeat to the point where you gain fat. We see this in practice: Association studies repeatedly show an inverse association between the consumption of “good” fats, such as nut and avocado, and body fat percentage. In addition, randomized controlled studies that have tested the effect of giving people a nut supplement daily have shown a tendency to decrease body weight despite an increase in total calorie intake. Fats that contain medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), such as coconut oil, which just so happens to be highly saturated, don’t get stored as fat either.
Studies suggest that it’s not just the EFAs that don’t get stored as fat in the body. Monounsaturated fat that is found in avocado, olive oil, and most nuts doesn’t appear to increase body fat levels either. Technically, if you eat these fats with complete abandon, you could probably gain fat because you’d be eating more calories than you expend, but in practice, this is very unlikely.
Fat tends to be known as the macronutrient that is most easily processed in the body, meaning it requires the least energy to break down—a process called the thermic effect of food. However, things are not so simple and all fats are not created equally.

Diet & Nutrition What are these superfood things people keep talking about? Certain foods (mainly fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and seeds) are particularly packed with essential nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. For those who are crunched for time, inexperienced in the kitchen, or just not in the mood to cook an elaborate meal, we’ve put together a list of our favorite super-simple, super-healthy recipes.

Kale, Almond, Banana Smoothie with Chia Seeds A perfect on-the-go breakfast, this smoothie recipe features a delicious combination of four superfoods: kale, banana, almond butter, and chia seeds. Although the recipe calls for almond milk, consider subbing in soy or skim milk, which contain essential vitamins and minerals that can help with losing weight, building muscle, and fortifying bones Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups kale, packed 1 cup almond or rice milk 1 tbsp almond butter 1 tbsp chia seeds 1 tbsp coconut oil 1/2 ripe banana Directions: Super simple... Blitz in your blender into smoothie. If you don’t have a high-powered blender or Nutribullet, pour the smoothie over a sieve into a bowl, and then transfer your drink to your favorite glass. Drink immediately.
Sweet Potato Hash with Eggs A hearty and delicious breakfast that combines sweet potatoes, eggs, and red, green, and yellow bell peppers, this hash can easily accommodate extra add-ins. Toss in some meat (like sausage or shredded chicken) for extra protein, or up the veggies with onions, kale, or spinach. Sweet potatoes, which provide 400 percent of your daily recommended amount of vitamin A, are both delicious and beneficial to eye health. Ingredients: 2 cups cubed sweet potatoes 1 medium onion, chopped ½ green bell pepper, chopped ½ red bell pepper, chopped ½ yellow bell pepper, chopped 1 cup chopped spicy smoked sausage 4 eggs ½ tsp cumin 2 tbsp olive oil salt and pepper to taste parsley for garnish

s & Recipes Goat Cheese and Beet Salad
Beets are back! This salad features bright-red roots alongside thinly sliced carrots. It’s a recipe perfect for any fan of cancer-fighting root veggies. (Bonus: the high levels of potassium in beets keep organs healthy.) Toss the vegetables with pistachios (for fiber and protein), goat cheese, and baby greens for a speedy, tasty lunch. Ingredients: baby greens 1 beet 1 large carrot 2 ounces of goat cheese 1/4 C shelled chopped pistachios Honey Vinaigrette 1/2 C olive oil 1/4 C red wine vinegar 1 tbs lemon juice 1 1/2 tbs honey salt and pepper Instructions Place baby greens on plates, top with thinly sliced raw beets (I like to chop mine into little matchsticks), carrot shavings, crumbled goat cheese and pistachios. Shake all the salad dressing ingredients together in a jar and drizzle over salad - enjoy!

“One of my favourite meals in the summer” - Ben
“Salmon and asparagus wins ever ytime” - Michael Salmon with Almonds and Asparagus Salmon and asparagus, two superfoods linked to improving cognitive function and preventing hangovers, take center stage in this recipe. Top grilled salmon and asparagus with toasted almonds and dress the whole shebang with garlic, chili, and lemon . After less than 20 minutes of prep and cooking, this recipe is both simple and filling—a no-brainer. Ingredients (Serves 2) 200g piece of salmon, skin on 1 tablespoon parsley, finely chopped Salt/Pepper 2 tablespoon olive oil 12 pieces of asparagus 2 tablespoons flaked almonds 1/2 teaspoon garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon chilli flakes wedges of lemon Instructions: Place a pan over a medium to high heat. Drizzle 1/2 tablespoon of the oil over the fish, add the parsley and a grind of salt and pepper. Massage the oil and parsley over the fish and place skin side down on the grill pan. Cook for 5 minutes and turn and cook for a further 2 minutes. Remove from pan and cover with foil to keep warm. (* If you like your fish rarer cook for less time) Wipe the pan out and add a tablespoon of oil to heat up. Toss in the asparagus stalks a let them sizzle for 30-40 seconds charring and going brown. Add in the garlic and chilli flakes and toss the aspargus through it. Continue to cook for a further 1 minute until the asparagus is slightly tender. Toss the flaked almonds through the asparagus and cook for another 30 seconds to brown the almonds slightly. Remove the asparagus and almonds from the pan and divide between two plates. Divide the piece of salmon into small chunks and place on top of the asparagus. Finish off with the remaining olive oil, squeeze of lemon juice and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
