Working closely with our project manager, Gordon Stagg from Bolt Builders, the transformation from the existing locker room has been dramatic. Based on member feedback, we have incorporated a number of features into the new design, including; more changing cubicles, more vanity units, larger showers, island and bench seating and improved lighting. The area now feels more spacious and delivers the member experience
we were hoping for. As Ian Riches, Club Director states “The project to rebuild the shower blocks, completely upgrade the locker room including floor, ceilings, air conditioning and lockers - and remain operational has been challenging but well worth it. Positive member feedback makes it all worthwhile.” See page 7 for an interview with Gordon Stagg from Bolt Builders.

9 Reasons You Don’t Lose Fat Phil Richards, International Fitness Expert explains some of the reasons why we don’t see the best results from our training. 1. Stinking Thinking The more love and happiness in their lives, the more the body will respond to exercise and get outstanding results. When there is anger, hatred and hostility in one’s life no exercise or nutrition program is going to get results in the long run. 2. Too Much Stress Remember this very important point: the less stress in your life, the more material you have for growth and repair. The more stress in your life, the less material you will have for growth and repair. It is exceptionally difficult to be lean and healthy when you can’t control stress. 3. Eating Too Many Carbohydrates and Junk The science is telling us that obesity is ultimately the result of a hormonal imbalance, not a caloric one specifically the stimulation of insulin secretion caused by carbohydrate rich foods. 4. Oestrogen Dominance & Poor Thyroid Function Oestrogen causes food calories to be stored as fat. Thyroid Hormone causes fat calories to be turned into usable energy. Thyroid Hormone and Oestrogen therefore have opposing actions. So when your thyroid isn’t functioning correctly and you have excess Oestrogen, achieving any fat loss would be near enough impossible. 5. Poor Detoxification Pathways Detoxification needs to run in parallel if you want long term, successful weight loss. Toxins block nutrients from adequately nourishing the cells of your body. This can have a devastating effect on our hormones, energy and health of the cells which will
cripple your metabolism. 6. Dysfunctional Digestive System & Food Allergies Better digestion and absorption of protein and nutrients will also support protein synthesis and the development of lean body mass, while helping us avoid deficiencies that can cause poor health and hinder weight loss attempts. 7. Not Training Hard or Smart Enough Unless you get your nutrition, lifestyle and mind set sorted, exercise will have little if any effect on your weight or reducing your body fat percentage, as the following studies show. The reason why the vast majority of people DO NOT see RESULTS in the gym is quite simply they DO NOT train with any INTENSITY that will force the body to change. 8. Low Vitamin D The sun is the ultimate giver of all life and one of the most important anti cancer, anti obesity tools by providing the nutrient Vitamin D. 9. Poor Sleep There are many, many studies showing that sleep deprivation can lead to overeating. Even a single night of sleep deprivation appears sufficient to increase ghrelin (an appetite stimulating hormone) and hunger. Spiegel et al. found that restricting sleep increased ghrelin as well as hunger and appetite, especially for calorie-dense, high carbohydrate foods.

Dieting Makes You Fatter?! Researchers have found that dieting without detoxing is one of the best ways to poison yourself and get FATTER. Toxins block nutrients from adequately nourishing the cells from your body. This can have devastating effects on our hormones, energy and health of the cells which will cripple your metabolism.
When you clean up your diet at the same time you detoxify, metabolism is further enhanced.
There are two sides to detoxifying: the first is to reduce the toxins your body is exposed to and the second is to improve your body’s ability to detoxify. Detoxification supports a healthy metabolism. By removing toxicity, you allow the cells to process nutrients in a more efficient way. This will significantly boost the rate at which you metabolize the foods you eat.
Vitamin D deficiency is a major cause of dementia and it even causes physical abnormalities in the brain. People who are deficient experience a rate of cognitive decline that is three times faster than someone with adequate levels of the vitamin. People should start supplementing and getting out into the sunshine more often once they reach the
age of 60, say researchers from Rutgers University. The researchers checked the levels of the vitamin in a group of 382 racially-diverse men and women with an average age of 75, and observed their cognitive functions over a five-year period.
You must remember that you are only healthy as your cells. You are a mass of 50 trillion plus cells. Cells make tissues, Tissues make organs Organs make humans. LOOK AFTER YOUR CELLS! To fully understand the detox and exercise process, come and try our next Team Dynamix Course.
All of the participants were deficient in the vitamin, or had an insufficiency. During the five years, those who were deficient experienced cognitive decline that was two to three times faster than those who were insufficient. In other words, they started to lose cognitive function within two years of starting the trial. (Source: JAMA Neurology, 2015; doi: 10.1001/ jamaneurol.2015.2115)

Bolt Delivers a Fantastic Locker Room Upgrade
F
inding the right project manager and partner to deliver a complete rebuild and renovation of an operational locker room was always going to be a challenge. After months of meeting a number of construction companies, we were delighted to find Gordon Stagg from Bolt Building & Maintenance. Working with a local company was important to us but in Bolt we found someone whose standards exceeded our expectations, was incredibly flexible and understood
what we were trying to achieve. As Gordon describes “We had undertaken work in the leisure sector before, but the scale and operational challenges that an old building can pose meant that we had to have 3 solutions for every task depending on what we found once we had taken the existing locker room out. We have had a great team on this project and the out of hours working and flexibilty they have shown was the only way it could have worked.
Fellow member and local business Tiger Flooring was a key partner in delivering the project in a reasonable time. As Tony the Tiger states “I’m Batman and Gotham needed me, what can I say. When you call the Tiger, you know it’s going to be a grrreeat job”! Stephen Aucott, Director says “I would have no hesitation in recommending Bolt and Tiger Flooring to anyone looking to complete a renovation or new build, they’ve been fantastic for us.”

Hormone Balancing Diet by Lisa Knowles
A
s women, when we hit a certain age we have the dreaded menopause to look forward to; hot flushes, night sweats, weight gain, dry skin, mood changes and much more. This is due to the hormones oestrogen and progesterone dropping to stop the menstrual cycle. But! It doesn’t have to be that way.
boosting energy found in berries, eggs, avocado and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, spinach and kale.
We can do so much to help ourselves with a little thought and effort into what we eat. Food not only gives us energy it has many other amazing abilities and properties, such as; • Balancing hormones (phytoestrogens) • Supporting the liver to detoxify and remove unwanted hormones • Increase bone mineral density to prevent osteoporosis • Help support our hearts, reduce inflammation and lower cholesterol levels
Avoid refined foods (bread, cakes, biscuits, processed foods) that are high in sugar or refined carbohydrates and salt. These foods bring about fluctuations in hormone levels as well raising blood sugar levels that increase the release of insulin and too much insulin results in fat storage. Avoid stimulants in coffee, tea and alcohol as they can make menopausal symptoms worse.
Try adding or increasing the following foods: from plants (phytonutrients)to help keep your hormones under control such as from beans, lentils, green leafy vegetables, seeds and nuts, the essential fatty acid omega-3 to prevent inflammation that can be found in flaxseed oil and oily fish, the smaller the better; mackerel, sardine, anchovies. Lower omega-6 that is found in margarine, meat, processed foods and sunflower oil), vitamins for an anti-oxidant effect and
Magnesium will support bone and muscle health and to help with relaxation and selenium a powerful antioxidant, both are found in nuts, wholegrains, garlic and mushrooms.
Try eating more brown rice, lentils, chick-peas (avoid if suffering with poor digestion) instead of potatoes, pasta or white rice. They will help to keep blood sugars balanced, support the liver, have phytoestrogenic properties and help keep the weight off.

Lights Out Artificial light in our homes and offices could be an unsuspected cause of diseases ‘of ageing’—such as osteoporosis and muscle loss— that affect our ability to stand and walk. The good news is that the symptoms can be reversed if we spend more time with the lights off when it gets dark. The association could have special relevance in care homes and intensive care units where lights are almost never switched off, say researchers from Leiden University Medical Centre in The Netherlands. They reckon that 75 per cent of the world’s population is exposed
to artificial lighting during the night, and this interferes with the natural light-dark cycle that’s so important for regulating and maintaining health. Losing this natural circadian rhythm can trigger a range of diseases normally associated with unsteadiness and frailty in the elderly, such as inflammation, muscle loss and osteoporosis. Although people might think that our exposure to light would have a neutral effect on health, countless studies are showing that we have evolved to need periods of darkness, say the researchers.

(To Slow The Effects of Ageing) Their own research has centred on laboratory mice that were exposed to constant light 24 hours a day. The mice’s usual circadian patterns were affected by 70 per cent, and as a consequence, their bones started to show signs of deterioration, and it triggered a pro-inflammatory state that is normally seen only when someone is exposed to pathogens or other harmful stimuli. The symptoms disappeared within two weeks after the mice started to experience a normal day and night cycle.
