Better Sleep = Fat Loss

When it comes to fat loss, it is not all about eating less. You also have to play the hormone game. One of the hormones that we have to get working for us is growth hormone. Why? Growth hormone has important effects on protein, lipid (fat) and carbohydrate metabolism. The secretion of Growth Hormone decreases by 10 - 15% in each decade of life, but the body can

still make large amounts of GH as we age; we have just got to know how to optimise growth hormone naturally so we can stay lean & healthy. The four most effective ways to increase growth hormone naturally is high quality sleep, intense physical exercise, controlling blood sugar and the use certain amino acids like Arginine, Glycine and Glutamine. This can all be achieved quite easily with a bit of discipline and a real focus to decrease body fat.

Food Intolerance Seminar Wednesday 29th June at 7pm

Food intolerance can manifest itself in a number of ways. Some people may be asymptomatic (no symptoms) to being in a ‘fog, feeling bloated and being tired, all the time’ whilst others will be unfortunate to experience irritable bowel syndrome, migraine, skin, musculoskeletal, circulatory or respiratory conditions or even neurological symptoms (see diagram). All these can affect their ability to live normal healthy lives leading to long term, unnecessary pain and suffering. Realising that the food you eat is a catalyst for particular symptoms is not easy when, unlike the immediate reactive symptoms of food allergy, food intolerance symptoms can appear hours, days months or even years later. In fact, following the elimination of problem foods, many sufferers have realised that they had been experiencing minor symptoms as a result of intolerance for their entire lives. However there are now answers and ways to identify the cause of symptoms that can help with long term relief. The Ultimate Health Check uses the most up to date technology to identify the cause of the symptoms leading to understanding your body, treating it and having a healthier life. Please come along to our FREE Food Intolerance Seminar to learn more about the issues it can create in the body and what you can do about it.

So What Exactly is Food Intolerance? ‘Food intolerance is your body’s reaction to certain foods which can manifest itself in a number of ways’ Although not directly life threatening like food allergy, food intolerance should never be underestimated as its impact on sufferers can be significant, severely impacting on their ability to live normal healthy lives. Food intolerance is estimated to affect at least 45% of the population.

Lifting Workshop We’re frequently asked about how to start introducing Olympic Lifts into members workouts and what the benefits are. The topic is extensive, so we’re running a free session on ‘Obsessed about Lifting’. This workshop will focus on: - The key lifts to learn - How to include them in a workout for maximum results - Technique and form and the key areas you’ll be working on. Amongst the many, many benefits of Olympic lifting, here are four key reasons to join the workshop and introduce lifting into your programme: 1. THE EFFECT ON THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM You will achieve the same cardiovascular benefit as running when lifting. 2. THE HUMAN BODY IS BUILT IN ONE PIECE One of the first areas most novices to Olympic Lifting discover is the whole chain of muscles from the

gluteus and the spinal erectors to the trapezius. What muscles do the Olympic Lifts build? All of them. 3. IT’S DIFFICULT TO OVERTRAIN You can potentially always overtrain; however because of the movement from floor to overhead, there is little room for forced reps, overload techniques, or any form of cheating. There is no bench, no rack, no supports. It’s virtually impossible to try and squeeze out an extra rep. 4. OLYMPIC LIFTING WORKOUTS DON’T TAKE VERY LONG One of the major benefits of Olympic lifting in today’s time pressed world, is that each workout doesn’t take very long. You’re not cheating by training like this, you’re maximising your results! Book in now at main reception to take your training and results to the next level.

Skin Focus: Rosacea Odyssey member and nutritionist, Lisa Knowles, looks at the causes of Rosacea. A condition that affects a huge number of people. including celebrities like; Sam Smith, Cameron Diaz, Renee Zellwegger, Mariah Carey and Bill Clinton,

Characteristics

Rosacea, is an inflammatory skin condition that affects the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. The skin flushes easily and can swell and thicken becoming inflammed causing tenderness and sensitivity to touch. If left untreated the condition can become permanent.

Who does it affect?

In some cases it can start in the teens, but it is more common in fair-skinned females aged 30-50 years. Men can get it, but it is usually a more serve form often accompanied by Rhinophyma, a condition whereby the nose becomes chronically red and enlarged. Again, it is more common in fair-skinned men, aged 50-70 years.

Causes

The main cause is unknown, but there are number of factors that can aggravate the condition, such as, alcohol, spicy food, tea, coffee, heat exposure, sunlight and harsh cosmetics (see the full list on our website). Stress is a well-known factor to cause rosaeca flare-ups. Stress cause a release of a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol causes an inflammatory response in the body and this can show externally in the form of rosacea along with other skin conditions. Digestion - Imbalances in the digestive tract may also cause aggravation. This can show itself as wind, bloating, acid reflux, constipation/diarrhoea, reoccuring infections such as colds, ridged, split or flaking nails, thin hair, fatigue or headaches. Any of these symtoms could indicate that the digestive tract is not functing adequately

lowering stress and you should aim to have at least 7-8 hours per night.

Diet

A full list of food choices and recipes is available in Lisa’s full article, which is available on our website. But in summary: Vitamins - B, A, C, E and Zince will all help to reduce inflammation. Food Sources: - Green leafy veg, nuts, seeds, broccoli, cauliflower, bok choi, kale, watercress, cabbage, whole grains, grass fed meat, cold oily fish, eggs, avocado, citrus fruit, beetroot, beans, legumes, carrots, sweet potato, garlic, radish and rocket. Try to avoid pro-inflammatory foods such refined carbohydrates (white bread, pasta, rice), refined sugar found in fizzy drinks, cakes and sweets. In some cases foods from the deadly nightshade family may also cause inflammation; these being tomatoes, pepper, aubergine and white potato Water! Water! Water! The skin loves water, as does the digestion. It cleanses, detoxifies and ensures that everything is moving and functioning properly. Aim for at least 2 litres a day. You may have to build this up slowly. Visit the blog on our website for the full article, including recipes and more tips.

Treatment

Remove any known irritants – See causes Stress managment; such as country walks, yoga, meditation, pilates, breathing techniques. Try to take your mind off what raises your stress levels. Good sleep is essential to repairing the skin as well as

Why You Should Avoid Margarine!

V

egetable oils (and margarine, made from these oils) are oils extracted from seeds like the rapeseed (canola oil) soybean (soybean oil), corn, sunflower, safflower etc, all these oils are polyunsaturated fats which are exceptionally high in omega 6 fats which is a pro-inflammatory fat. They were practically nonexistent in our diets until the early 1900s when new chemical processes allowed them to be extracted. Unlike butter or coconut oil, these vegetable oils can’t be extracted just by pressing or separating naturally. They must be chemically removed, de-odorized, and altered. These are some of the most chemically altered foods in our diets, yet they get promoted as healthy. Vegetable oils are found in practically every processed food, from salad dressing to mayo. These oils are some of the most harmful substances you can put into your body, no doubt about it! The overall amount of fat consumed has not changed much since then (it has actually decreased slightly) but the type has changed dramatically. In 1900 the amount of vegetable based oils that people consumed was basically none. Today, people consume, on average, many pounds of vegetable oils throughout the year through cooking and spreads. Butter consumption at the turn of the century was eighteen pounds per person per year, and

the use of vegetable oils almost nonexistent. Yet cancer and heart disease were rare. Today butter consumption hovers just above four pounds per person per year while vegetable oil consumption has soared-and cancer and heart disease are endemic. Since the 1950’s these vegetable oils and their derivatives have been increasingly used in processed foods and for frying or cooking. They are marketed as healthy because they contain monounsaturated fats and some level of Omega 3 fatty acids. The Journal of Epidemiology published a study that tracked both butter and margarine consumption over a 20 year period in men. The researchers discovered that as margarine consumption increased heart attacks went up. As butter consumption increased heart attacks declined... The study also divided the data into ten year increments. What they discovered is that during the first ten years, there was little association between margarine consumption and heart attacks. However, during the second decade of follow-up, the group eating the most margarine had 77% more heart attacks than the group eating none!
