Hardware Bar is fun, friendly and festive along with delicious boys. I sat down for a Q&A with Eric Einstein, owner of the new watering hole in Hell’s Kitchen, and found out what was what about this new hot spot. What year did Pieces Bar open? Pieces opened the week before Pride, 1993. Is this your first venture with your business partner, Justin Buchanan? Yes. Justin worked for me as a bartender at Pieces for several years earlier. That’s how we met. What made you guys open up in Hell’s Kitchen? HK is the place where so many of the going out crowd lives and plays. That designation has moved from the Village to Chelsea to here over the decades. Why Hardware Bar and not Pieces Bar North? You can’t build the character and history that Pieces embodies. You have to develop that over time. If we had called the new venture Pieces North it would have hurt the brand. People who love Pieces would have been disappointed; and people who don’t like dive bars would have shied away. How did you come up with the name? The space has always been a hardware store, most recently Schatz’s Electrical Supply, now on 39th St., but we chose it via an online contest. What’s the difference between the

two bars? I can tell you that what will be the same is a friendly staff, fun nights, and cheap drinks. The spaces, themselves, are very different, physically, even though they’re both comfortable. Hardware is like a Juicy Couture track suit where Pieces is your favorite old sweats from college. Who came up with the design of the bar? I did. Just kidding! It was a long, iterative process with a great architect. There was a constant tension between Designy and Comfortable. I think we struck the right balance in the end. I hear Shequida is involved. How so? Gary is our director of entertainment. He’s been very helpful in tweaking the final touches. What DJ’s will you have spinning at Hardware Bar? We have a rotating few on Fridays including Susan Levine and DJ Kindbud. Saturday resident is Scotty Rocks. Thursday Happy Hour resident is DJ Mike B. Before we go, what should our readers know about the bar? Go somewhere else if you want bitchy staff and pricey drinks. We’ve got a great staff, no attitude, a beautiful bar, and the cheapest drinks around. Hardware is your neighborhood bar, from noon till 4 am every day of the week. Best to all of you, Frankie C. email me at thecolumnbyfrankiec@gmail.com follow me on twitter: @FrankieC_

the wonderful world of wigs BY SHERRY VINE

BIG NEWS: My variety show, SHE’S LIVING FOR THIS, is on Here TV!! You can also see them at www.HereTV.com/sheslivingforthis OR You can now watch full episodes on Hulu.com!!!! It’s my lifelong dream come true! Total Carol Burnett meets Cher meets Laugh In meets toilet humor with some sexy boys thrown in. Guests include: Justin Vivian Bond, Joey Arias, Candis Cayne, Peppermint, Cazwell, Busted, David Ilku, Bridget Everett, David Serrano and Bianca del Rio!

First, before I get to wigs, travel, booze and kooky queen shenanigans - a moment for everyone affected by Hurricane Tropical Super Storm Sandy. I know many people are without power or completely lost their homes and loved ones. The week leading up to Halloween and Sandy was chock full of wiggage. Filming on Season Two of “She’s Living for This” has officially begun, and our first guest is Pandora Boxx from RuPaul’s Drag Race, All Stars, and Drag U. Pandora also performs all over the place and has a new single coming out. I love this gal and we clicked the first time we met, so I was very happy to get her on the show. The new season of SLFT will begin in January and also features cameos from Sharon Needles, Willam and Phi-Phi O’Hara. Can’t wait!! In the meantime, catch up on season one on Here TV or Hulu. Porsche, my lady friend who performs every summer on Cherry Grove and winters in Key West, does a show every Friday at Stonewall. I fill in for her when she can’t make it, and I was there recently. Stonewall, of course, is the historic landmark bar where “it all began”! It’s also one of the only bars in NYC that has a truly diverse crowd: gay men, lesbians, fun heteros, all ages - I love this! It’s soooo fun to perform there; it’s very “Cheers” except not everyone knew my name.

But by the end of the night they did. It was nice to perform for a crowd that weren’t on the phone or Grindr! I was cracking up with a dear friend, Marc Happell, and sexy bartender Mike, was serving us up. Pop in sometime to experience Stonewall. The next week was spent rehearsing and organizing a huge event for the Mount Airy Casino in the PA Poconos. Me, Pandora Boxx, Mimi Imfurst, Willam, and four dancers (Richard JMV, Dane Sorensen, Dean Alan Muir and Timmy Ehrlich) were hired to create a “Halloqueen-themed spooktacular”! I love doing these types of shows; I love rehearsals and putting costumes together and all the madness. The day of the show was a wee bit stressful because it would be the first time we are all together in one room and had to put together a big opening and closing numbers. But these gals and guys are pros and it all worked out. The sold out show was a big hit. The venue actually had bottles of Jack and vodka in the dressing room, and as hard as we tried not to dip in during the show, by the end, Willam was rolling on the floor. She is outrageous and hilarious. We all got out of drag and stuffed our faces at the diner in the casino, and were creaming with laughter. We made it home just before Sandy descended. Poor Mimi just got power and water

back. You can see all the pics on Mt. Airy’s Facebook page. Halloween! Hell’s Kitchen was one of the few areas with power so EVERYONE was up here to party for Halloween. I was doing my show at Industry and hosting a costume contest . It was amazing to see how many people were not going to let no electricity keep them from dressing up and having fun. I think by then they needed to escape. HK was beyond packed. I have never seen a line down the street all night just to get in and then inside you couldn’t move. Much to my delight (and everyone else) I only did two songs and a quick costume contest. A pretty pink glitter unicorn won gay? YES! I hope everyone recovers from Sandy as soon as possible. It feels frivolous writing about Drag shows at a time like this, but laughter is the best medicine! So read Bunny’s column and laugh!! lol MEOW! Why GuySpy Is Taking OVER THE WORLD! When GuySpy.com started up in February 2010, most people just ignored it as yet another gay hookup site for horny dudes. Almost two years and over 500,000 registered users later, the site is the fastest growing gay social media network on the planet. The mobile-friendly site (check out their apps on iTunes and Google Play) is almost entirely free, and features multi-photo profiles, HD video messaging, and a world travel mode with full mapping, among other features. Clearly, this isn’t just another cheap gimmick to meet the boy next door. Once you log on to GuySpy, you get a smorgasbord of available men in your area, and you can narrow down your search to ethnicity and age range. There’s also that fully interactive map to keep you on the cruising grid- just last night I spotted 2 GuySpy guys meandering around Pier 63—GuySPY indeed! But something else pops up too: articles. GuySpy.com has combined social networking with gay-related features to create a unique brand of all-in-one packaging. After you’ve chatted-up that hot guy from midtown, glance over and you’ll notice there’s a feature story on

Fran Drescher or Olivia NewtonJohn. GuySpy’s main page shows you their list of “Guyds,” so-called experts in their respected fields, who blog about such topics as gay parenting, sex, theater and movie reviews, and politics. “We are so proud of our great stable of bloggers. Their articles cover a range of topics, from gay fitness to gay models, to movies and pop culture. Bundle that with our mobile dating app functionality, which lets our members search through the matrix of local and international guys, chat with other members through text, voice and video, and cruise through the latest GuySpy photos, and I think we have a winning user experience.” says Morris Chapdelaine, marketing director of GuySpy, which is based in Vancouver, Canada. To that end, in Fall 2011, GuySpy recruited David Toussaint, a former Conde Nast writer and three-time book author, as Senior Editor, to oversee the content and hire new writers. “When I was asked to take control of the writing aspect of

GuySpy, my goal was to make the material smart,” says Toussaint. “Whether you’re writing about Chris Rockway’s butt or gay marriage, the content has to be clever or people won’t come back. I hired a lot of wonderful writers from all over the spectrum, age- and locationwise. I think of GuySpy as allencompassing, like Playboy for gay men in the digital age. Some people are here just to find guys, others just read different blogs; everything blends together in a way that I hope is informative and entertaining.” GuySpy’s also making the rounds around the world, sponsoring and co-hosting gay pride events, and forever updating the technology and the brand. “We’ve been feverishly at work on delivering streaming video for both the website and the apps, and our new app designs are truly dynamic and easier to use; our goal is to be the go-to site and app for every gay man on the planet.” ads Chapdelaine. Guys will come and go, literally, but GuySpy’s new brand of innovative media might be here forever.

TRANIMAL ALL STARS @ POSH TRANIMAL All Stars is the latest edition of the 10-week drag competition at Posh Bar & Lounge in Hell’s Kitchen. Hosted by gender illusionist Tina Burner, TRANIMAL features up-andcoming talent in the New York drag scene - and plenty of fierce performances. “There also promises to be a train wreck or two, myself excluded,” Burner says. Each week’s winner receives a $100 cash prize and moves on to compete for a $500 grand prize. Past winners have gone on to host their own shows around the city. Burner adds, “TRANIMAL gives them a platform to develop a name for themselves and win some cash along the way. It takes a lot of money to look trashy.” Tuesdays at Posh, which has been in Hell’s Kitchen for 12 years, kicks off at 3 p.m. with happy hour (all draft beers $3) until 9 p.m., when DJ Calvin starts spinning ‘til 4 a.m. Burner pledges: “I promise to always bring fabulous numbers, to make you laugh and cry. There is no Hell’s Kitchen pretentiousness at this bar which makes it a blast. It’s a laid back atmosphere with a great show.” But for those expecting some hair pulling, Burner assures that the girls won’t disappoint: “As far as the bitchiness between the girls, it’s nothing a little wig snatch won’t fix.” Dubbed Hell’s Kitchen’s ultimate drag show, TRANIMAL is the place to be on Tuesday nights.

What: TRANIMAL All Stars Where: Posh Bar & Lounge (405 West 51st St.) When: Tuesdays @ 10 p.m.

Taurus Apr 20–May 21: Ever say, “easy for you to say”? Well, now the key is to accept that it cannot only be easy for you to say, but equally easy for you to do. The road to Easy Street begins with a slight shift in perspective, not a 360, but just an easy step to the left, maybe right, and then allow smart to replace agony. Jim Parsons /Enrique Iglesias

after all, it was you who ordered all that wrong stuff for take-home. Set yourself gently into the next level, and let go and enjoy it. Louise Hay/Bruno Mars

s

Okay, hello. If you could read my mind, what a tale my thoughts could tell... and I’ll bet yours as well. Spring forward, Fall back, back into what ? Surely not old habits, or the arms of old flames. Maybe into the ways of Old, otherwise known as ways to do things right, so as to get them done, and I mean the first time, with no excuses. Now there’s an idea, and Astrologically speaking, we are now in a good time to sharpen up our pencils at last. The Sun is in Scorpio from October 22-November 21. Scorpio is the sign of depth, intimacy, and extremes of feeling. Superficiality simply will not do with the Sun in Scorpio. We have the desire to get to the bottom of matters. Mediocrity does not satisfy either. All that is hidden, taboo, secret, or suppressed interests us. In Libra, we strived towards equality, but Scorpio’s energy is provocative, usually in a quiet way. It can be an immensely healing and transformative energy. Jealousy, vindictiveness, beating a dead horse, and being manipulative are some of the more negative expressions of Scorpio. Mercury is in Sagittarius from October 29-November 14. When Mercury is in Sagittarius, ideals are sought, our thinking is more optimistic, and our faith increases. We are more equipped to believe and to persuade. What is fair and unfair concerns us most now. Venus is in Libra October 28-November 21. As this new cycle takes hold, harmonious ties to others are what you yearn for; refinement and elegance are what you seek. The ideal partnership, the perfect balance, the highest standards of truth and beauty - these are some of the things that quicken your pulse now. Venus parallels Uranus October 27-29. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit. This is an exciting but unstable energy. Friendship in love relationships becomes more important. Read your horoscope. Kiss someone. Make a Power Play. After all, you’re all stars. Aries Mar 21–Apr 19: Like getting a trim done on your hair, washing the windows on your car, or getting a new pair of eye glasses, the sharpening up of your game is a great plan now. The result will be better than ever, giving you a better grip, as well as raising your stock in the eyes, hearts, and minds of others. Mike Manning/Thomas P. Elliott

Gemini May 22–Jun 21: Putting personal progress off until now, and/or that which has come into being, is just another way to not really do it. Stop, and recognize that you already have all you need to accomplish what you need and want, as long as you embrace the confidence in yourself that could be holding you back. Neil Patrick Harris/Morrissey

Cancer Jun 22–Jul 22: It is the beginning of a festive time of year. Celebrations and holidays will fill much time, and as the Fall flourishes, use this Party-a-Plenty season to adopt a less grown up (read boring and serious) you. Let the little stuff go, and use the time to regain a wonderment that can’t be explained with logic. Megan Rapinoe/Michelle RodrigueZ Leo July 23-Aug 23: The skills you have developed for management of both home and work are now about to be immersed in your next phase of progression, as you trot out your newly acquired talent for making a deal, creating compromise, and, dare I say it...? A win-win situation. Who would have ever believed it only a few short years ago. Louis Virtel/Peter Gaitain Virgo Aug 24–Sep 22: Selective memory, and selective sight are not foreign concepts to you, the problem with seeing what you wish is, sometimes the omitted is the very key to happiness, satisfaction, or just depth of understanding. Regardless, start to hone the practice of ‘see more, be more’ and trust yourself enough to know you CAN handle the truth. Travis Wall/Tyler Perry

Libra Sep 23-Oct 23: Push ‘em back, Push ‘em back, waaaay back - your defensive tendencies, that is. Now is the time to see how less wrong-withthe-World can feel, and welcome more right. First time in a long while, but

Scorpio Oct 24-Nov 22: Just like a paper-back novel, the kind that Drug Stores sell...you know; if you could read my mind, but you can’t, Blanche, you can’t. Learn to read the many other “clues” that we all send to those paying attention. These can be most revealing and can lend a hand in greater insight and understanding of others, which by the way, will be an upcoming theme for you. Frank Ocean/Calvin Klein Sagittarius Nov 23-Dec 21: Everything old is new again, and some things just keep turning up like bad pennies, old boyfriends, and maybe situations you thought were long gone and far away. They may in fact be very much like ones of the past, but have returned so you might finally get it right. John Galliano/Clay Aiken Capricorn Dec 22-Jan 20: And along came a spider, and sat down beside her. Well, if you are sitting where spiders are, maybe it’s time to make a move to a better group of seats. Do your times of late remind you of that game, “one of these things is not like the other”? Well, if it’s you, then you have one more clue - take action and move along to the next stop. Quickly. Nick Gruber/Orlando Bloom

Aquarius Jan 21-Feb 18: My friend, Gina Barnes, told me once, “You don’t have to be the best, you just have to be there.” After all, all the people that matter, are there, and so can you be. Now, add your newfound practice of being not only there, but being nice to boot, and you might just discover a winning combination. Trevor Wayne/John Travolta

Pisces Feb 19–Mar 20: Okay, just one more time...HUH? What the H-E-Double-Toothpicks are you doing? Let the wisdom and cool that are yours pave the way to coasting in and out of situations, not getting stuck in them like Shelly Winters on the Titanic? Think about having the role down so well, there is no need for butterflies, or re-writes. Jeffery Gordon-Levitt/Queen Latifah
