Planning for CONEXPO

We may only be in the month of January, but many in the industry are deep in their planning for CONEXPO-CON/ AGG (CONEXPO) 2023. According to a recent press release from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, “the show, now nearly 5% bigger than the record set in 2020, will feature 1,800 exhibitors and 150 education sessions.” Our team looks forward to attending this event and sharing all the exciting new products, news and trends with you. To learn more about what to expect during the show, check out the preview on page 6.

One trend that we expect to see during CONEXPO is improvements on connectivity and telematics. Technology that provides connections and data is no longer optional for original equipment manufacturers to include in their components and equipment — it’s a requirement. This issue shares more on this important topic in our cover series, which begins on page 16.

In addition to the need for connectivity in construction equipment, heavy-duty trucks are also adding sensors, telematics and other Internet of Things technologies. This is covered in our special section, beginning on page 12. As these vehicles move to electric operation (see page 14), autonomy and self-driving capabilities (see page 12), connectivity is critical for the success of these trends.

I am looking forward to many trips planned during the first quarter of 2023, including a couple visits to manufacturers’ facilities. It will be a thrill to to share what I see and learn with you!

CONEXPO-CON/AGG & IFPE 2023 Preview

The OEM Off-Highway team is excited to be back at CONEXPO-CON/AGG this year. CONEXPO-CON/ AGG is held every three years for the construction industries, focusing on construction, aggregates and ready-mixed concrete. The event features exhibits of the latest technologies and innovations in equipment, products and services. Continued Growth

The largest trade show in North America, CONEXPO-CON/ AGG is growing. It is predicted to break the 2020 record. According to CONEXPO-CON/AGG Show Director Dana

Wuesthoff, the show is “now at 2.8 million square feet of exhibits. There’s more for construction pros to see than ever before.”

This large show requires comfortable shoes because there is so much to see. However, a new feature may minimize the number of steps attendees will be taking.

The recent additions to the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) will make it the easiest to get around, as well. Beneath the entire LVCC campus runs the Convention Center Loop, an underground transportation system designed by The Boring Company. It transports convention attendees (free of charge) throughout the campus in Tesla vehicles in under two minutes.

“We are excited to welcome CONEXPO-CON/AGG back to Las Vegas for another record-setting event,” said Brian Yost, chief operating officer of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, which owns and operates the LVCC. “The addition of the West Hall and the Convention Center Loop will only further enhance the ‘Only Vegas’ experience for attendees and exhibitors.”

CONEXPO-CON/AGG offers a comprehensive education program during the five-day exposition, with seminars emphasizing industry issues and trends, management and applied technology.

Sustainability

According to a recent AME press release, with construction technology around sustainability significantly advancing in recent years, CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 is already set to have the biggest focus on sustainability since the show began in 1948. As reported on page 11 about sustainability trending at bauma in Munich, we predicted that this trend would continue into the conversations and technology at CONEXPO-CON/AGG. Apparently, the AEM team thinks the same.

According to Wuesthoff, “More than ever, show attendees will see sustainability in action, from electric- and hydrogenpowered construction equipment, to more recyclable materials and waste reduction opportunities, to changes we’re making to the show to better support sustainability.”

North America Rotary Rig Count

• The North America rotary rig count in the 12 months through October came in 53.7% above the same period one year ago.

• The U.S. oil and gas extraction capacity utilization rate was tight in October, at 97.3%. Tight capacity indicates a need to increase drilling, but macrotrends signal rise in the rig count will likely occur at a slowing pace.

• U.S. defense capital goods new orders in the 12 months through September came in at a record-high $163.1 billion, 2% above the same period one year ago.

• In October, the U.S. committed additional funds to military assistance for Ukraine, boding well for new orders. ITR Checking Points suggest new orders will accelerate in growth in at least the near term.

• U.S. construction machinery new orders in the 12 months through September totaled $41.4 billion, 11.9% above the same period one year ago.

• U.S. steel scrap prices have dropped to levels last seen in late 2020 and are declining. Lower prices could yield a margin-improvement opportunity for producers. If demand softens, however, and buyers pressure producers to pass along their savings, lower prices could negatively impact dollar-denominated new orders.

US Leading Indicator

• The monthly raw data and monthly rate-ofchange for the U.S. OECD leading indicator decreased in October. The monthly rate-ofchange has been declining for 18 months.

• Trends in the indicator suggest downward cyclical movement in U.S. Industrial Production will persist into at least the middle of 2023.

US Industrial Production US Private Nonresidential New Construction

• In the three months through October, U.S. industrial production was 3.8% above the same period one year ago.

• U.S. total manufacturing unfilled orders suggest that manufacturers have backlogs to work though. Although there is a risk of order cancellation on the back side of the business cycle, backlogs will likely support growth in U.S. manufacturing in the coming quarters.

• U.S. private nonresidential new construction totaled $137.1 billion in the third quarter, up 9.3% from the same period one year ago.

• Nonresidential construction typically lags the overall U.S. economy. The economic boom in 2021 and early 2022 should translate to accelerating growth for construction in the next few quarters. Elevated materials and labor prices will contribute to a rise in dollardenominated construction.

US Total Public New Construction

• Annual U.S. total public construction rose in September but was 0.6% below the September 2021 level. Construction will likely rise above year-ago levels in the near term.

• The U.S. Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, passed in 2021, will positively impact public construction. The timing of the impact remains opaque.

US Farm Machinery Production

• U.S. farm machinery and equipment shipments in the 12 months through September were 1.7% above the year-ago level, a down tick from last month’s annual growth rate of 2.9%.

• Rising interest rates will increase financing costs for those purchasing new farm machinery and may be a downside factor for demand. However, elevated backlogs suggest the farm machinery market will rise further.

Europe Ag & Forestry Machinery Production

• The Europe agricultural and forestry machinery production annual growth rate came in at 2.8% in September.

• Accelerating growth is likely in the near term as supply chain limitations gradually improve. However, the conflict in Ukraine remains a risk.

US HeavyDuty Truck Production

• U.S. heavy-duty truck production in the 12 months through October was 13% above the same period one year ago.

• The U.S. transportation services freight index annual average reached a record high in September. Despite record-high freight volume, pricing trends suggest truckers are feeling pressure on their profits.

Europe Leading Indicator

• The Europe leading indicator declined in October on both a raw data and monthly rateof-change basis.

• The leading indicator points to rate-of-change decline in European industrial production into at least mid-2023.

China Diesel Bus Production Germany Industrial Production

• Annual China large diesel bus production was 27.4% below the year-ago level in September.

• The quarterly rate-of-change, at -3.3%, is above the annual rate-of-change and rising. This suggests the production annual rate-of-change will likely transition to rise in the near term.

• Germany industrial production in the third quarter of 2022 came in flat relative to the preceding quarter but 1.4% higher than the third quarter of 2021.

• Slowing global growth will likely impact Germany’s export-heavy economy. The leading indicator evidence points to an economic slowdown into at least the middle of 2023.

Front & Center at bauma

This trend will likely continue into exhibits, presentations and conversations during CONEXPO-CON/AGG & IFPE in 2023.

Many conversations among exhibitors and attendees during bauma 2022 centered on sustainability. From connectivity to alternative fuels and electrification, sustainable operation has become a prerequisite in the off-highway industry to ensure decreased emissions, improved fuel efficiency and long equipment life. Several exhibitors at bauma in Munich, Germany, featured sustainable equipment.

Caterpillar

This was especially true during our many conversations with the thought leaders from Caterpillar, many of whom participated in our October webinar, Sustainable Solutions. The full array of products were shared with us in a quick snapshot on Day 1 of bauma. Dustin Childers, global marketing manager for Caterpillar, gave us a tour in this video. The company had three main focuses during the event:

• Driving Tomorrow

In each focus area, sustainability was a priority.

RISE Robotics

To remove the hydraulic fluids in hydraulic systems, RISE Robotics has developed fluid-free, “not” hydraulic cylinders. The technology helps support the battery-electrification of industrial equipment by delivering hydraulic-system-or-better performance at levels of efficiency

previously available via some linear actuators. During the event, RISE Robotics and Danfoss Power Solutions took to social media to confirm their partnership, announced in May 2022. Lowering carbon emissions was one reason for this partnership.

Perkins Engines

During the event, the Perkins team discussed their full line of Stage 4 Final engines, which are dual certified to use diesel and biofuels. In addition, they launched their modular batteries during the event, another way the company is decreasing the carbon footprint of its components.

Bosch Rexroth

Sustainability was also the focus of the technology exhibited at the Bosch Rexroth booth. From the bauma page

on the company’s website: “Now is the time to take action if we are to leave future generations with a planet that is worth living on. Here at Bosch Rexroth, we are doing our bit to ensure that you are able to rise to this challenge.”

ELECTRIC TRUCK DEPLOYMENT Ready for Acceleration in 2023

Though battery-electric models currently make up only a small fraction of total global truck sales (around 0.4% in 2021), it is already clear that the transition from diesel combustion engines to zero-emission technologies is well underway. Volvo Trucks suggest they expect that, by 2030, more than 50% of the trucks they sell each year should be electric. Truck OEMs face rising pressure to reduce the environmental impact of their vehicles, with legislation enacted to reduce exhaust greenhouse gas emissions and improve urban air quality. But, alongside this challenge, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are seeing growing demand from their customers who need zero-emission solutions to help deliver their corporate emission reduction targets. As a result, the number of available electric truck models is increasing, with OEMs ramping up

production volumes of these models. In its report, “Electric and Fuel Cell Trucks 2023-2043”, IDTechEx forecasts that the truck market is at the beginning of a relatively rapid shift to electric powertrains.

Truck Market Gets Choice of Class 8 Electric Trucks

In North America, electric heavy-duty truck options have been limited until this year. However, in 2022, several major OEMs (including Daimler, Volvo, and Tesla) began series production of Class 8 electric trucks. Perhaps the earliest anticipated announcement was from Tesla, which at the start of October, confirmed that its Tesla Semi had finally gone into early production at Tesla’s Nevada Gigafactory (the original production date was scheduled for December 2019). The first 15 electric Class 8 trucks were expected to be delivered to Pepsi Co. in December 2022. What makes this announcement significant is the performance promised by Tesla when compared to other available electric models: up to a 500-mile range (when loaded on a flat route), no sacrifice of payload capacity, Megachargers capable of returning 70% of range in 30 minutes of charging, and on-road energy consumption of less than 2 kWh/mile.

The Tesla Semi could offer the performance and total cost of ownership that make it competitive with current diesel trucks for some long-haul operations. The large order book for the vehicle demonstrates plenty of companies are keen to explore the technology, and 2023 should see several of them get the opportunity to put Tesla’s claims to the test. Tesla has tentatively set the goal of an annual production of 50,000 vehicles per year in 2024.

Moving on from Electric Prototypes to Fleet Replacement

Sustainability is an increasingly important concern in the boardroom of major corporations. Many are making public commitments to decarbonize their business operations in line with the UNFCC Paris Agreement and national net-zero emission targets. Transitioning truck fleets from diesel engines to zero-emission powertrains is a highly visible way to demonstrate their green credentials to their customers.

While IDTechEx believes the initial deployment of electric trucks will be best suited to regional and urban routes, ongoing development work in battery technology, improved powertrain efficiency and optimization of charging strategy will, over the next two decades, see future generations of electric trucks able to meet the energy

demand of all but the most arduous of long-haul duty cycles. 2023 promises to be an exciting year, with companies able to move on from small pilot tests of electric trucks to genuine replacement of diesel-fueled fleet vehicles in cases where the duty cycle is compatible with electric operation. However, given the initial range limitations of the technology, OEMs must work with their customers on each deployment to avoid potential disappointment.

Self-driving trucks offer opportunities for the logistics industry and are a crucial future technology alongside e-mobility or hydrogen-based propulsion. The advantages of autonomously driven trucks are promising, especially truck driver shortages.

Self-driving truck applications have benefits when compared to other vehicles. Many truck transports are in areas that are less complex than urban transport, including freeways, highways and geofenced spaces like facilities or company grounds. Nevertheless, autonomous driving applications for trucks are a challenge for which new approaches and methods must be introduced.

Building public trust of any autonomous vehicle requires demonstrating that their systems have been thoroughly

tested in every conceivable traffic situation. Two factors make it possible to validate autonomous vehicles. First, a paradigm shift away from the number of driven miles in favor of scenario-based testing. Second, moving the majority of tests to a virtual test environment. A software-based test environment makes scaling tests possible, allowing a greater number of tests in a shorter period.

In scenario-based testing, certain driving situations are selected in which the driving functions are brought to their limits by special traffic or traffic participants with erratic behavior. These situations can be simulated in a virtual environment where they can be used and reused to test the vehicle’s function without posing a safety hazard. If these scenarios can also be abstracted and made parameterizable,

changing the parameter values can generate similar scenarios that push the driving function to its limits. This allows for a large number of tests to make sure that the function behaves correctly in every situation.

Reusing Models for SIL and HIL Testing

The virtual test environment in which these scenarios are executed and the driving function is tested also has to meet certain criteria. First, the models used for the vehicle behavior, such as vehicle dynamics, motor and brakes, have to simulate realistic behavior. To ensure this, specific driving maneuvers must be completed in a real test drive and then in the virtual simulation environment. This is also the way to validate models that replicate the reaction of other traffic participants to the test vehicle. In addition, the virtual sensors must perceive the environment and vehicle under test as they would in reality.

Second, the results must be reproducible. This can only be achieved by using deterministic models. The deterministic models must have short computation times. This is the only way to complete the scenarios because computation time is finite. It is vital that all models be simulated together in real time or even faster, especially for systems tested on hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test benches, where the final

electronic control unit (ECU) is available as real hardware for the virtual vehicle and environment. The ECU must receive the required signals in the correct timeframe. If not, the ECU enters an error state, and the test is no longer meaningful. High-performance models are also required for softwarein-the-loop (SIL) tests, where the simulation environment and the tested function are available as software. By scaling this simulation, many tests can be executed in parallel.

Functional Safety and ISO 26262

Regulations and standards ensure that driving functions installed in road-legal vehicles are safe. ISO 26262 is used whenever electronic functions and software that affect functional safety are in the vehicle. Using tools or components that are already ISO 26262 certified can be helpful. As manufacturers identify potential component or software suppliers, making sure the product is ISO 26262 certified would allow them to focus on the rest of the process chain with the certainty that the functions developed meet the requirements. |

We were happy to talk with Mohamed Abd El Salam, IoT and connectivity senior product manager with Danfoss Power Solutions about telematics and connectivity in offhighway equipment. In this Q&A, he answers questions about what data original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) need to gather and deliver to their end users and the level of connectivity that should be included.

Traditionally OEMs tried to capture everything from the end user. After realizing that getting everything is not as effective and useful as expected, many OEMs are reconsidering this approach. It is now crucial to get data relative to working cycles and machinery application to monitor the life cycle of the vehicle and to be able to recreate the digital twin of the job site.

It is still important wto get the classic telematics data like fault codes, fuel consumption information and CAN bus data. But the vehicles are getting smarter, as are the telematics gateways, so some relevant information can be calculated directly on board, reducing the need to send everything off board.

What technology is most important for vehicle OEMs to include?

CAN bus protocol and similar protocols are essential to get a streamlined way to capture information from the vehicle without getting worried about adding specific sensors. As much as possible, CAN bus should be able to bridge all the vehicle’s electronic control units, sensors, controllers, etc. This is also the perfect way to enable real remote servicing of these components through a remote service application.

Do you think integrating vehicle data into an ERP system is important?

This is now common in the market among our customers, and our approach is to give our customers the appropriate APIs to let them connect with their enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, dealer management system, and other tools.

How important is open API when adding IoT technologies?

APIs are now essential for telematics solutions. Nowadays, telematics customers are more demanding and more familiar with the digitalization trend. They are always looking for data integrations, data exchanges, and connecting solutions together. APIs are the way to provide our customers with

an ecosystem experience where everything is connected. We will give them the tools and “doors” to expand the ecosystem based on their specific need and application.

Telematics are very important to the design of commercial vehicles. Connected vehicle technology is already table stakes for on-highway vehicles, and it’s rapidly approaching that in the vocational space, as well. It enables many critical services, such as advanced remote diagnostics. With advanced remote diagnostics, fleets and business owners can have immediate access to the health, location and performance of their vehicles at all times. As data analytics and machine learning continue to mature, predictive maintenance and prognostic repairs will help companies avoid unplanned downtime in favor of planned maintenance events, saving them time and money.

Additional capabilities for advanced remote diagnostics include over the air engine software programming, which allows calibration and programmable parameter updates to be made without taking a vehicle out of service. FIELD AND BACK OFFICE Meet at Trimble Dimensions+ 2022

New tool management software was announced, and connected field equipment was displayed during a 15-acre offsite demonstration.

Trimble integrates data from its own connected equipment and from other Internet of Things (IoT) devices to suggest an increasingly interoperable construction industry. At Trimble Dimensions+ 2022, connectivity and IoT were centerstage, with ample usage of data from connected equipment.

While Trimble’s market leadership may have been carried by the ability to apply geospatial and IoT technologies at an industrial scale, the company has also acquired or grown back-office construction technology including:

• Construction enterprise resource planning (ERP) via Viewpoint

• Civil engineering estimating

• Specialty and trade contractor estimating

• Estimating for generals and subs through Viewpoint Estimating

• EBuilder, a project lifecycle management solution for owners

Trimble Dimensions+ was the first event that united Viewpoint users and customers with the rest of the business. The exhibitors on site remarked on increased interactions with financial decision makers. But Trimble Dimensions+ was about more than connecting the front and back office on the conference floor.

Bluetooth Low Energy

One announcement at the event was an integration between Hilti’s On!Track tool management software application and Trimble’s Viewpoint Vista ERP. On!Track is now part of Trimble Construction One that combines

Bluetooth tracking devices on its tools to a cloud application that captures the data every two minutes. The On!Track application monitors tool use, location and battery condition to support many business functions including maintenance and rental return dates. Hilti tools will come standard with the requisite sensors and Bluetooth Low Energy beacons and can install beacons on non-Hilti tools during a brief on-boarding process.

ON!Track combines Bluetooth asset tags, cloud-based software and field resource management software to solve problems related to asset and workforce management.

“We have a lot of customers with our ERP that have Hilti tools but do not have the On!Track system,” Trimble Vice President and General Manager, Construction Management Solutions (Viewpoint and MEP) Lawrence Smith said. “But for Viewpoint customers, this is a way to ensure that an element of project cost information gets matched up to the right phase.”

Connected Equipment

The front office was covered by the inclusion of the Viewpoint users, but the field was represented by a 15-acre offsite equipment demonstration area where 3D paving; machine control; surveying; and the Trimble Quadri, Trimble Quest, Trimble WorksOS and Trimble WorksManager applications that connect the equipment to each other and the back office.

“Trimble has a footprint that spans different core technologies,” Trimble Senior Vice President for Construction Pete Large said in an interview with IronPros.

The B2W acquisition could also have importance for how Trimble routes data from connected equipment to back-office applications.

New machines arriving in construction industry rental fleets could be a harbinger of the type of off-road vehicles that construction and utility companies will increasingly operate on jobsites soon. By way of background, equipment dealers Sunbelt Rentals and United Rentals have made sizable investments in electric vehicles when each bought hundreds of Ford F-150 Lightning trucks. Last year, Sunbelt announced a strategic partnership with Doosan Bobcat to invest “in a large fleet of Bobcat T7X all-electric compact track loaders and electric compact excavators.” Last fall at bauma, Komatsu demonstrated a first-of-its-kind, all-electric compact wheel loader.

If all construction original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) want to get there, they will have to turn the prototypes that many manufacturers are experimenting with into production-ready machines like the Bobcat T7X. This entails designing machines and transforming manufacturing processes and capabilities by converting diesel engines to battery power or fuel cells. The move to all-electric, production-ready machines will also require manufacturers to convert hydraulic actuation to electric motion control, convert machinery and train their personnel.

With all-electric actuation and power, off-highway vehicle OEMs, equipment rental companies and operators can reduce overall maintenance costs and enhance safety and sustainability (by reducing use of fuel, oil, and emissions). For this article, think of sustainability as using a resource so as not to deplete or forever damage it.

What Goes into All-Electric Technology?

With an all-electric construction vehicle, the powertrain gets a battery for its power source and a set of mechatronics

(electric motor, battery, power electronics and electric cylinders) to control the traction and actuation needs of the machine. All-electric, off-road vehicles also have a built-in electric vehicle control module (EVCM) computer processing unit and software to control the motion, and sense and monitor the tasks they are accomplishing.

This interconnected mechatronics help the machine maneuver, control motion and send signals to safely lift, tilt, reverse and move forward. Each axis on the machine can be independently and precisely controlled. However, they are tied together with software, sensors and telemetry making it easy for the manufacturer to develop valuable functionality for their customers via minimally invasive software changes. This is similar to how Tesla and Apple introduce new features through software updates, instead of swapping hardware in and out. The all-electric system described above enables this capability in off-road vehicles. A digital software framework like this makes a construction vehicle automation-ready, enabling OEMs to build digital and software-configurable machines for users.

In the past, workers carried a series of stand-alone products and tools to get a job done. Think of a mobile phone, digital camera, GPS, and a computer, which linked you to the internet. Once these were integrated into a single product, there was new functionality, value and even new industries

were born. That is not unlike the value of digitally connecting multiple machine subsystems. The connectivity creates entirely new value from construction machines, while making construction safer, more productive, autonomous, and sustainable.

All-Electric Machine Benefits

The maintenance benefits of an all-electric machine are like the ones offered by the automotive industry. All-electric systems have fewer components, sensors, connections, filters and fluids. The reduced parts equal fewer points of failure and increased use of the vehicle. The switch from hydraulic to all-electric actuators also means a machine builder eliminates leaks that may occur with hydraulic fluid. Fluids have a carrying cost and an environmental impact. All-electric propulsion and motion control decrease (and may eliminate) noise from an off-road vehicle, which reduces noise pollution and leads to a better work environment. As for safety, by eliminating large hydraulic pumps on these machines, operators and workers alongside a machine can easily speak with and hear one another.

The Challenges of All-Electric Off-Road Vehicles

powerful as conventional hydraulic systems. The opposite has been proven with compact construction equipment. All-electric machines perform as well as or better than those with hydraulic systems. For example, when a diesel engine idles, it has reduced torque. It must step up to meet load demand. But electric motors offer instant, peak torque at zero speed.

In the space industry, electric motion-control technology manages power and movement for solar arrays on satellites and swiveling (or gimbaling) the engine or exhaust nozzle on a rocket. Developments in battery technology have advanced during the last several years to provide the capacity to operate compact loaders, excavators and backhoe loaders. That said, more advancements to battery technology must occur to electrify larger vehicles like bulldozers

Another challenge to an all-electric construction fleet is quickly recharging a battery in the same timeframe it takes to refuel a vehicle. This is a significant issue for automobiles traveling long distances, but off-road vehicles used for digging, hauling and lifting do not travel long distances. With the fast-charging capabilities available today, a construction site manager could have a mobile recharging station and recharge vehicles throughout the workday.

Looking forward 10 years, we will see a remarkable transition from analog to intelligent digital machines. This shift enables robotic control for off-road

vehicles and a wealth of machinelevel data. With the right designs and manufacturing systems, OEMs can harvest this data and gain key insights that increase jobsite productivity. When an OEM combines its connected machines with advanced sensors, these insights go beyond the bounds of traditional fleet telematics. As machines and systems get smarter, artificial intelligence can serve as a catalyst for more advanced insights that will move the off-highway vehicle industry to widely adopt intelligent digital machines.

A possible precursor for how the construction industry’s journey to electrification may play out is flight simulation. For decades, the twostory-tall simulators pilots climbed into to earn their FAA certifications were hydraulically powered. Only hydraulic technology could survive the system requirements of these massive simulators as they tilted back and forth to mimic takeoffs, landings and other aerial maneuvers. Once electric motion control technology matured, all-electric simulators dominated the simulator market. Today, the flight simulator market is all-electric. |

Choosing the RIGHT CENTRAL TIRE INFLATION SYSTEM Can Increase Crop Yields with REDUCED COMPACTION

As farm machinery has increased in size, tire volume has also increased, but the overall footprint of the tires has not increased proportionally. As the load on each wheel increases, tires must be inflated to higher pressures to operate safely on the road. However, pressures over 15 psi may damage the soil.

Compacted soil creates unwanted consequences: It more easily blows or washes away and can impede root growth and nutrient uptake. To increase crop yields, while improving fuel efficiency and tire life, tire pressures in field equipment must be lowered. The right central tire inflation system (CTIS) makes this possible with little or no operator intervention.

A CTIS is electronically controlled and designed to offer improved productivity for agricultural vehicles. Many systems offer extended tire pressure ranges and allow for the autonomous lowering of pressures to create a larger tire footprint. This distributes the load, which reduces soil compaction, rutting, wheel slip and operator fatigue.

Most CTISs include a wheel valve to fill and exhaust air, a pneumatic control unit for the valves, an electronic control unit that communicates with other components and a human machine interface that displays the terrain and the CTIS’s response to changes.

Evolving CTIS Technologies

Farmers have long understood how compacted soil negatively impacts yields. Early on, they manually deflated their tires when entering the field. This manual approach was

time consuming and resulted in inconsistent field results and damaged tires.

Early CTIS generations that eliminated manual tire pressure adjustments were created for the military. The military was not concerned about soil compaction but needed improved mobility in different terrains. However, military applications required higher pressures—around 80 psi to 100 psi. Tractor tires operate at 40 psi to 60 psi or less when on the road.

As farming technology has evolved, autonomous vehicles and smarter controls use features like GPS and moisture sensing to adjust tire pressures to specific terrains with little intervention.

OPTIMIZED PUMPS MINIMIZE MAINTENANCE AND DECREASE DOWNTIME

A modular design approach and a wet seal with external barrier fluid help extend the life of centrifugal pumps.

Centrifugal pumps used in off-highway applications, including construction, agriculture and many other industrial markets require certain capabilities for safe and efficient operation. They need to be rugged and reliable. Each pump should be designed for performance, outfitted with the highest quality components, and guaranteed to save an end user time in the field. When selecting a pump for these applications, an original equipment manufacturer must satisfy performance requirements and help end users minimize downtime.

Hazards of Off-Highway Operation

Abrasive materials are present in many demanding offhighway applications. Another risk is the threat of running down to a dry tank. Other applications may not have an adequate hydraulic oil supply to power a centrifugal pump. Some centrifugal pumps takes a modular approach to these challenges, with the ability to mix and match features and systems to provide the specific centrifugal hydraulic motors

allows for seamless upgrades to satisfy ever-changing performance needs.

Materials and Components

Centrifugal pumps constructed of durable cast iron and a standard coating provide chemical resistance. Additionally, some stainless-steel configurations are available.

For these applications, a pump is often driven by high-efficiency, gear-driven hydraulic motors producing performance up to maximum pressures of 130 psi (9 bar) and a maximum flowrate of 260 gallons per minute (984 liters per minute). In operations that require variable flowrates, pulse-width-modulation options allow for high precision application. If a sufficient hydraulic supply is not available, centrifugal pumps can also be belt-driven.

To ensure the ability to withstand abrasive materials, silicon carbide seals are standardly used to keep pumps operating and to provide approximately 3 minutes of rundry protection. Another option for indefinite run-dry seal protection is available with a wet seal. Most mechanical seals rely on a thin layer of process fluid to cool and lubricate the seal faces. This becomes a problem when the process tank is empty or the fluid causes bonding between the seal faces. A pump with a wet seal circumvents these problems with its seal isolation technology.

The wet seal works through three fundamental features:

• The seal chamber has a higher pressure than the pump cavity

• The barrier fluid selection in the chamber

• Visibility, allowing the user to visually inspect the chamber’s fluid level and condition

A wet seal uses a pressurized seal chamber that ensures a fluid film between the seal faces, maintaining constant lubrication, preventing seal wear and reducing the chance of seal failure, which leads to down time. In conjunction with the lubrication pressure, a quality lubricant fluid must

be used. Many other wet seals use automotive antifreeze as the barrier fluid, which can dry and crystallize between the faces causing failures and requiring maintenance.

A quality synthetic lubricant that is developed specifically for seal lubrication is recommended. These barrier fluids should be cleaned to ISO 4406 14/13/11 cleanliness code, which makes it 250 times cleaner than new oils. A barrier fluid like this prevents the possibility of process fluid contamination on the seal face, eliminating another possible failure point in the field.

A final recommended feature for a wet seal is high-visibility monitoring gauges. The sight gauge allows the end user to view the barrier fluid level and see if any contamination has entered the chamber. Contamination can occur if pressure is lost in the seal

chamber. Pressure losses can be monitored and prevented via the pressure gauge mounted directly below the sight gauge for quick verification prior to operation.

A modular approach to designing the pumps and the wet seal ensures durability in harsh conditions. These features help end users minimize required maintenance and reduce downtime. The added benefit of pulse-width-modulation control of the hydraulic drive motors provides further precision needed in the everchanging jobsite. Customers expect intelligent equipment and specialized attachments to require less manual effort to install, allow for greater ease of operation and reduce service-bay times. These expectations are helping drive the market for reliable solutions that are safe and cost-effective. There is also growing demand for technologies that allow for the completion of tasks with fewer man-hours and less formal training.

Building greater overall compatibility and machine control was a goal for one manufacturer when designing a hydrostatic tail winch. The original prototype was developed, tested and put through rigorous paces on a John Deere 700L crawler dozer in coordination with a distributor for the manufacturer. The winch is powered by a dedicated, closedloop hydrostatic circuit and has electronic controls.

Making Changes

The distributor's technicians and the manufacturer's engineers worked sideby-side to design and install the first hydrostatic tail winch, which was designed for the John Deere 700L dozer. The dozer was built for different construction, forestry, land clearing, advanced recovery and oil field applications. With the launch of its new dozer, John Deere wanted operators to have greater visibility, comfort and other improvements intended to reduce fatigue and minimize the effort required to perform gradecontrol installations in the field.

The winch manufacturer highlighted the low-effort electrohydraulic (EH) controls among the equipment’s centerpiece components. The company is making changes in terms of aesthetics and ease of integration with the new configuration cutting almost 18 hours off the previously

required installation time. The job can now be done in under a day with no disturbance or manipulation to the inside of the dozer cab.

With previous hydraulic control versions, installation of the joystick required cutting and welding a mount inside the cab with multiple hoses feeding through to connect with the Deere pump system. With the new controls, only two hoses and a wire harness must be run. Cutting the mount or plastic on the cab interior is not required. It can be removed and (the dozer) can be returned to its original condition.

Customers’ expectations have risen for standard equipment, parts and service options. They have also increased for engineering solutions designed with a systems approach to safety, innovation and productivity. Quick turnaround times on installations are a crucial component to keeping up with demand—with safety and reliability both top priorities for end users.

ELECTRIC ACTUATORS CONTINUE GAINING TRACTION IN MOH APPLICATIONS

This technology may provide safety and efficiency, as well as decrease costs.

Electric linear actuators are gaining ground in mobile off-highway (MOH) machine design applications. In the past, electric linear actuators could efficiently replace a single hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder in simple, end-to-end motion applications using up to 100 watts of power. Today, they can perform complex motion profiles drawing power up to 400 watts. Part of this new functionality stems from embedding microprocessors into the design, creating smart actuators.

Designing with Smart Actuators

Smart actuator applications may be as simple as low-level power switching or as sophisticated as implementing a control deck across a CAN bus network. Having a microprocessor in the actuator enables access to functionality that might otherwise require incorporating external components. Before a smart actuator starts to move, it checks the environment to be sure it is safe for the user and

the application. Once it starts, it measures its position along the stroke. Collecting this data without adding external sensors and other equipment also reduces the number of components needed and simplifies installation.

Smart actuation allows equipment to provide advanced control, more complex movements and simplified installation. If an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is designing for an application in which several actuators must move at the same time, the design team can accomplish this with simple cabling, completing movements and movement profiles independently (see Image 1).

Self-driving agricultural equipment is a good example of a smart actuator application. Some grain harvesters, grape harvesters and farm tractors, for example, already operate autonomously.

Because of this, actuators must control stroke and force on their own. Without an operator who might otherwise control operation based on visual clues, an autonomous system must rely on electronic feedback. Most smart actuators have built-in fieldbus capability to provide this feedback. Some have CANopen masters so to connect to a vehicle control directly without drivers or other components

needed to access operating data. The vehicle's built-in logic manipulates speed, force and position from the master control unit and provides control of the actuator and knowledge of position at every point of the stroke.

Electric Actuator Advantages

The ease with which electric actuators control stroke, speed, position and force is an advantage when compared to hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Energy efficiency is another important benefit. In traditional MOH applications, the hydraulic or pneumatic system must operate all the time. Electric actuators, in contrast, are power on demand, consuming power only when movement occurs and without parasitic power loss.

Electric actuators are also much easier to install. An OEM or end user simply mounts them and connects the power and signal cables. Then they are installed. Electric actuators are virtually maintenance-free. They do not have oil to change or require cleanup when they leak. This makes electric actuators safer for food-related applications, such as the agricultural harvesters mentioned earlier.

Therefore, electric actuators are evolving to perform tasks that were once the sole domain of fluid technologies. Electric actuators can manage loads up to 16,000 Newtons. Another traditional limitation of electric actuators has been withstanding shock load

handling, but even this is being addressed to some extent by hybrid electro-hydraulic actuators (Image 2). r

What Is It and What Do OEMs Need to Know?

Anyone producing heavy-duty or special vehicles in Europe needs a safety strategy for interaction between the subsystems and the electronic components. This is true for on-road or off-road vehicles. Designating a safety level for each application will help ensure functional safety right across the supply chain— and the key to doing is risk analyses performed in accordance with the appropriate standards.

Traditional mechanisms are increasingly being replaced by smart electronics. Smart solutions are also replacing mechanical actuators and indicators in many vehicles. CAN bus systems connect hundreds of bus participants with one another. Data and information are shared, reducing the number of wiring harnesses and their weight and costs.

At the same time, these data buses expand vehicles’ technical capabilities. The downside is that the increasing

complexity of these electronics can cause new types of malfunctions. A bit that flips from zero to one during digital data transfer, possibly switching the application to an unintended state—with potentially devastating consequences when safety components are affected—is all it takes to distort information. This is where functional safety comes in. Highly complex applications can benefit. Simple or seemingly non-critical ones, such as window openers or light switches, can as well.

Immediate System Response to Random Errors

Functional safety reduces unacceptable risks caused by random electronic system errors to an acceptable level. The risks in question are those that may cause personnel injury, not property damage. Functional safety means applying and observing certain standards to ensure the monitoring of the

correct operation of safety functions.

In the event of an error, the system will respond and switch the application to a safe state—for example by stopping it or by alerting the operator.

For mechanics, it is important to apply appropriate development processes to prevent system errors. Increasingly, complex electronics also require the systems to be monitored when in use—and random errors must be detected during this process.

Random errors may be caused by external influences such as radiation, magnetic fields or the aging of electronics systems. When they occur, the system must respond immediately. In these situations, systems switch themselves off or warn the driver.

Although functional safety cannot prevent malfunctions, it can reduce the potential damage they may cause. Functional safety means limiting risks to a level that is acceptable. To this end, specific standards define development and production processes, regulate the monitoring of electronics and define a safe state. These standards also ensure the necessary protection for manufacturers of safety components, subsystems or entire vehicles. The extensive documentation and certification relating to functional safety provides OEMs with proof that they are supplying “safe” products. These are the methods for error prevention:

• For mechanisms and electronics, prevent systematic errors through defined processes in concept phase, during product development and manufacturing.

• For electronics, detect random errors through monitoring during use and respond to random errors with safe states during operation.

Specific Standards May Apply

Who must address functional safety? All manufacturers are responsible

for ensuring that nobody is harmed because of their products. The European Directive on general product safety requires that all products sold on European Union (EU) markets must be safe. This

EU Directive will become binding in the corresponding countries when it is transposed into national product safety legislation. Accordingly, product manufacturers must comply with specific standards or uphold the state of the art in their products. This includes the principle of functionalv

safety. The ISO 26262 standard is one of the standards that applies to vehicles containing safety electronics. This standard was expanded to explicitly include all road vehicles in its second edition in December 2018. Machinery and vehicles should be considered separate applications, and specific technical standards must be considered. Functional safety matters, or rather, the currently applicable standards in this area are often the subject of legal disputes.

Failing to respect them may be seen as gross negligence. The company may be liable if people are injured. If an OEM neglects functional safety, personnel on the team are putting their company and end users of their products at great risk.

Functional Safety Is a Corporate Obligation

Vehicles and components of vehicles that do not ensure functional safety pose a big risk to their end users, their environment and their manufacturers. Conversely, functional safety in vehicles protects manufacturers from legal ramifications and financial damages. In this respect, companies that may be prosecuted and employees, such as a development manager deemed responsible for a failure. Lawmakers provide for compensation payments or prison sentences in such cases. Products with insufficient functional safety may result in recalls. Reputational damage may cause long-term financial losses.

Addressing the issue of functional safety is a corporate obligation. For

OEMs of safety applications, this means developing a safety culture that also intervenes in management and support processes: functional safety management. At the same time, applying the relevant standards and certifications

presents an opportunity that goes beyond product safety and avoiding legal ramifications: the application of the relevant standards increases the quality standards. In actuators and indicators, for example, this affects their switching safety and reliability.

A Safety Strategy Allows for Responsibility

Functional safety is the responsibility of the company that brings a product to market. The company depends on components that will not cause injury.

The task of such companies is to perform a risk analysis for their overall product as a whole and determine the necessary safety level for it. To this end, the relevant standards define what are known as Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) or Performance Levels (PL) for machine applications (see box on page 2). The safety level must be broken down for each individual component and its respective application. Specific requirements

for supplier components can then be derived accordingly. The safety level required for the same component from a supplier for customer A may differ from that for customer B. In each case, the application determines the safety level. For this reason, a safety strategy is required. All manufacturers of heavy duty and special vehicles must determine the following: Which components require which safety level? How do they need to respond to random errors? For some applications it is sufficient to inform the user that a workshop visit is necessary – for other applications, an emergency strategy is implemented in parallel. In other cases, a response must be triggered. This response will then ensure, for example, that a heavy duty or special vehicle can then only be maneuvered at a limited speed. In the case of particularly critical errors, it may even be necessary to stop the vehicle moving altogether.

Every Application’s Safety Level Must Be Determined

Standards show manufacturers how to achieve the Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) and define risk classification parameters. Risk classification focuses on the questions: How serious are the consequences of the various errors? How often do these errors arise? How successfully can they be managed? The answers to these questions determine the “severity” of the risk classification (see Table 1).

As mentioned above, each application must be considered separately; for example, the braking system will have a high safety level, while a different safety level may be adequate for one of its subsystems, such as the anti-locking system. The risk assessment covers Levels 1 to 4, and the designations may differ slightly depending on the standard being applied. For example, machinery standard EN ISO 13849 defines performance levels, classified from A to E. Meanwhile, the ISO 26262 standard, applicable to vehicles, has Automotive Safety Integrity Levels (ASIL) ranging from A as the lowest safety level to D as the highest (see Table 2). Independent test laboratories or other assessment procedures are prescribed depending on the safety level.

Discipline-Specific Standards Serve As the Basis

Functional safety and the related standards require management systems with defined development processes. The verification and validation model can be used to organize these processes into different phases—starting with risk analysis. In this respect, functional safety requires further-reaching than conventional development processes: fault tree analyses assess the reliability of technical systems and the likelihood that they will fail and form the basis for the safety strategy Inspection and documentation of the processes are also labor-intensive and must prove all the requirements and trace all the steps.

IEC 61508 is the basic functional safety standard, and disciplinespecific detailed standards have been derived from it for different sectors.

The ISO 26262 standard focuses on road vehicles and components that control driving functions. ISO 13849, on the other hand, applies to machine functions such as tippers, compactors and turntable ladders.

Changes to emissions regulations are highlighting the need for diversified powertrain options that can meet power requirements across a range of equipment sizes. Current and anticipated regulatory actions around emissions are accelerating a trend toward electrification solutions for the off-highway equipment industry.

Off-road battery applications are more demanding than on-road. Because of this, they will require higher energy density, durability, thermal management and integrated software to match the duty cycle of each job. Even in the face of these tough conditions, advancements in battery power technology are positioning batteries to be a viable long-term power solution for heavy equipment.

Opportunities with Alternative Fuels

Petroleum-based fuels have been the industry standard for years primarily due to the lack of acceptable, costeffective, and reliable alternatives. However, with growing interest in sustainable energy alternative fuels are

becoming more widely adopted and readily available.

Alternative fuels, such as biodiesel and ethanol, are promising when it comes to serving as a sustainable low-carbon alternative to diesel fuel. Within available alternative fuels, biodiesel and renewable diesel fuel could deliver value to end users of heavy-duty off-highway engines.

Many engines, sometimes with little to no alterations, are compatible with renewable diesel fuel like hydrotreated vegetable oil, which is a biofuel made by the hydrocracking or hydrogenation of vegetable oil. Renewable diesel comes from renewable origins and offers a sustainable and comparable replacement to diesel fuel and decreased emissions.

Power Bolt Connectors

TE Connectivity introduces the IPT-HD Power Bolt Connector designed specifically for ultra-rugged applications while addressing safety and reliability requirements. Performs well when exposed to extreme temperatures (-40-125 C [-40-257 F]).

Low contact resistance design allows connector to withstand excessively high engine-level vibrations. Features a new shielding design that complies with ISO and LV standards.

Available in thicker options for conductor cross-sections used in MCU (Motor Control Unit), E-axle and E-motor applications. Supports up to three positions, as well as 50 mm2 (0.08 in.2) and 70 mm2 (0.11 in.2) conductor cross-sections with a 95 mm2 (0.14 in.2) Provides a separate, single wiring harness to help simplify the assembly process.

Isolated Power Converters

The 18-W DC/DC isolated power converters in the AX0823XX series come in three models: 9-36 VDC to 12 VDC, 12 VDC to 12 VDC, and 24 V/24 V. All units have a typical efficiency rating of 87% and are operational between -40°C to 70°C.

These IP67-rated units include reverse battery protection, over- and under-voltage protection, short-circuit and overcurrent protection, and thermal protection for overtemperature. It is also protected against a 205-VDC load dump. This power converter is suitable for applications on vehicles, such as off-highway equipment, fire trucks and municipal vehicles.

New Automated Transmissions

Kenworth announced that the new PACCAR TX-18 and PACCAR TX-18 Pro automated transmissions for Class-8, heavy on-highway and select off-highway vocational applications are now available for order. Both 18-speed transmissions build upon the efficiency of the PACCAR TX-12. The PACCAR TX-18 offers additional capability for heavy on-highway use for applications, such as heavy-haul transport. The PACCAR TX-18 Pro adds enhanced capabilities and unique features for extreme-duty vocational and other select off-highway applications. The new TX-18 and TX-18 Pro transmissions support maximums of 510 horsepower, 1,850 pound-feet of torque capacity and 140,000 pounds of gross combination vehicle weight.

The transmissions are equipped with an internal oil temperature sensor. The sensor shows transmission temperatures on the in-cab, 15-inch digital display. It also provides driver notifications in situations causing excessive temperatures.

Braided Hose for Hydraulic Applications

Danfoss Power Solutions, a supplier of mobile and industrial hydraulics as well as electric powertrain systems, launched its Aeroquip by Danfoss EC881 Dynamax hose. This twowire braided hose offers reliability and extended service life, reducing maintenance time, costs and waste. EC881 hose has a 35% higher pressure rating, 26% higher operating temperature, eight times more abrasion resistance, 67% greater flexibility (1/3 SAE bend radius), and five times more impulse life than standard EN 857 type 2SC hoses. With its high-pressure capabilities, EC881 hose can replace heavy, rigid four-wire spiral hose in certain applications. Braided hose is more flexible than spiral hose, which may enable OEMs to reroute and reduce hose assembly lengths, contributing to further cost savings. Aeroquip by Danfoss EC881 Dynamax hose is available in -4 through -24 sizes (0.25inch to 1.5-inch inner diameter). What to Expect From the Latest Vanguard Power Solutions at WOC

TELESCOPING BOWL SCRAPERS

Increased efficiency has always been a goal when designing construction machinery. Some machines lend themselves more easily to these principles than others. For instance, except for the largest models used in mining, a motor grader’s blade width is constrained by the width allowed in roadwork. However, the power and efficiency applied to the blade can be increased.

The Mechanized Scraper

One machine that could have been designed for higher capacity was the mechanized scraper. The limits of animal power kept slip, Fresno and early wheeled scrapers small. Once tractors were used, things changed.

The two simplest ways for a scraper to maximize a tractor’s pulling capacity were to design a larger bowl or hitch multiple scrapers together in train. Enlarging the bowl would have been a normal solution, but R. G. LeTourneau rarely followed norms. His concept to increase capacity was no exception.

Innovative Solution

The problem with a bigger scraper bowl was the power required to load and unload it. Width had to be kept in check for transportation and resistance on the cutting edge, so it could be deeper and/or longer. The stresses of loading and ejecting the load, especially when moving it the length of the bowl, increased the power required beyond that needed to move the load.

LeTourneau’s unusual solution was the world’s first motor scraper with a gas generator powering seven electric motors. The power system could not load and eject the 12-cubic-yard payload, so he designed and patented a telescoping bowl.

The bowl consisted of five buckets nested at the front of the scraper frame. The first bucket was loaded, and then released to move back. Each of the other bowls were loaded in sequence. Once they were loaded, they would be aligned along the frame’s length. Ejecting the load simply reversed the process, unloading the forward bowl first and then bringing another forward inside it. This kept the loading and unloading action in the front few feet instead of needing enough power to force the load down the entire length of the frame.

LeTourneau sold the patent for this design to contractor Warren Brothers

Company in 1927. Then he re-acquired it in 1935. He produced a range of telescopic-bowl scrapers for crawler tractors and his largest Tournapull prime movers. When LeTourneau re-entered construction equipment manufacturing after noncompete restrictions expired following the sale of his construction interests to Westinghouse Air Brake in 1954, some of his huge electric-digger electric drive scrapers used telescopic bowls.
