MEANINGS OF FRIENDSHIP Social networking is the norm these days, and you simply are not in if you are not on Facebook. We all know that! So if you are avid Facebookers like us, you’d have been part of an interesting friendship tag that went around the social networking site recently. It was a status message that one had to cut and paste on one’s Wall if one believed in it. It went like this: “True friends can go long periods of time without speaking and never question their friendship. And pick up like they just spoke yesterday, regardless of how long it has been... Repost if you are lucky enough to have at least one. I certainly do!” Well, the tag did have a lot of takers because of the simple message it put across. As we celebrate Friendship Day this month, there are different ways to acknowledge the special people called ‘friends’ in our lives. But it’s not only about acknowledging them, but also believing that true friendships can stand the test of time, and it does not matter whether you speak to each other once in a month, twenty times a day or meet once a year. Space, distance and time do not matter if your friendship is true.

DISTRIBUTION United Media Services LLC

We also believe that one can make good friends at work! When you spend a lot of your waking hours with your colleagues, friendships at work are a given. You turn to each other in times of happiness or distress. And despite the warning bells in your mind not to mix the professional with the personal, you go ahead and form long-lasting and life-changing bonds.

CLASSY ISSUE While Al Mar’a does a great job of highlighting women’s issues every month, I felt that last month you guys did an exceptionally good job of focusing on women’s empowerment. It’s good to see the issue handled with such class. A lot of the time, material based on women’s empowerment seems to get lost under the noise of the blame game being played by both genders. It was good to see some truly uplifting stories about women

You thought social networking sites were just to make new friends or keep in touch with old ones? Think again. Rekha Baala examines an interesting side to the coin and tells you how businesswomen in Oman are using Facebook, blogs and Twitter to translate into business... literally!

Connecting

for Business!

16

AUGUST 2010

We can’t do without networking... Now, make that, we cannot do without social networking. Yes, blogging, Facebooking and Tweeting have become important extensions of our life.

demographic breakdown of men versus women on 19 social networking sites found that for the majority of social media sites studied, female users outnumbered their male counterparts.

Feel strongly about something. Start a blog. Want to give the world a second-by-second account of what you are doing and thinking right now? Log onto Twitter. Want to find long-lost friends, take pride in what you do and share those family photographs? You must simply be on Facebook then.

This actually led us to this story, though from an entirely different angle! While casually surfing through Facebook, Al Mar’a came across a page dedicated to Joud Sweets, run by an enterprising lady called Wafa whose cupcakes indeed looked scrumptious on the social networking site. We contacted her for a feature and a ‘connect’ was established. On closer look, we found that she has more than 200 fans on Facebook... and constant interaction was the key... to spread word about her delectable business.

Social networking has changed the way we look at the world and the way the world looks at us. Consider these. Just last month, Facebook announced that 500 million are hooked onto it. That makes it, a staggering eight per cent of the entire world’s population. Twitter at last count, had more than 75 million users. And as for blogging, well, it’s being touted as the ‘new media’ and is the perfect platform to voice your thoughts in a bigger and more comfortable format. Today, social networking has also become an important business tool. The primary word here is ‘social’ – that includes a network of business and professional connections to further your business interests. Did you know that research points out to the fact that women dominate the social networking scene? The Pingdom study, which held a survey of the

An organised search through the Facebook Pages, blogs and Twitter handles related to Oman opened up more ‘connects’. Women with small and medium sized business, those working out of home or those with established set-ups were using social networking sites to further and popularise their businesses. In this way, they are gaining larger audiences, identifying new customers and building their business presence. Al Mar’a takes a peek into the ‘connect’ between social networking sites and business women in Oman... We tell you how they are using social media to translate into big business benefits. The idea may be new but it’s certainly catching on...

joining in, there are exciting plans up Susan’s sleeve.

TOTEM Social media tool:

“We hope to grow the Page and there are lots of new developments on Facebook that TOTEM may be utilising in the near future. The more fans we get, the more we push ourselves with regard to the content, and of course the more opinions and suggestions we receive, which is a great way of tailoring the brands and styles we carry to fit our market. TOTEM has always been driven by customer feedback and our raison d’etre is to find styles that will fit our customer’s needs – one reason why you so often find me sitting in the shop – but now I can be in touch with customers remotely too.”

Liked by: 1,322 people Totem is a unisex boutique specialising in niche brands exclusive to them within the region. Opened in 2007 at the Jawaharat A’Shatti, Totem specialises in bringing small numbers of each piece. According to Susan Proctor, for a boutique like TOTEM, that prides itself on personalised service, Facebook is an ideal communication too. “Anyone with comments, suggestions, complaints or compliments can take less than a minute to write on our Wall or even just hit a button to like something they see.” “One visitor to TOTEM told me just recently that while she has been a regular customer at TOTEM, it is the Facebook Page that has made her feel like she’s part of a community by shopping at TOTEM. For me, a Facebook page is a natural extension of being in my shop; I can chat to the customers, discuss styles and trends, listen to what they have to say and act upon it,” she adds. Susan believes that ‘social networking can help a business make customers feel part of something bigger than purchasing an item in a shop, it’s like membership of a club and we love to encourage that feeling of inclusivity’. Last word: Facebook and other social networking sites are not purely sales tools like a traditional advert; it allows for a two-way relationship between the company and the customer.

Haila Trading Social media tool: Liked by: 1,097 people Haila Trading started out as a small family business in 1983. But today,

they are a name to reckon with in the ‘wedding decor and tents’ business. Now, their work has come to encompass other areas like launches, promotions and creating eye-catching props to promote businesses. With tourism fast becoming a developing sector, they are also very much sought-after for setting up functional tourist camps, etc. Natasha Cannavo, design consultant for Haila Trading informs us that they ventured into Facebook as a Page around eight months ago. “It has helped us a lot. At the end of the day, let us be practical, advertisements are expensive and a social networking site can help popularise your business. Each person you establish contact with will have you on their friend’s lists and friends of friends will also know us. So one succeeds in establishing a long chain of communication.” So it’s not surprising if you are a friend of Haila Trading and receive a warm message on your birthday like we did! Natasha explains it thus. “We always try to maintain contacts with our ‘Friends’ and try and participate in topics of interest to them. When you connect to the public, you become available to them and lots more happen than just the business aspect.” At the moment, Haila Trading is anticipating the results of their Facebook experiment before venturing into other social networking sites. Last Word: “So far the response has been favourable.”

raised in Muscat. The boutique has transformed from an online store, www.boutiquemuscat.com to a wellestablished one-of-a-kind boutique located in Madinat Qaboos. The exclusivity behind Boutique Muscat is what makes it special. The essence of that comes from the fact that all the collections are carefully selected and available only in limited editions. Combining a convenient spot in the suburbs of Muscat, and a warm and welcoming boutique atmosphere, BM provides its customers with the ultimate shopping haven. Since Boutique Muscat established the first store in Muscat; a limited edition collection was launched “by Boutique Muscat” which brings trendiness, style, and elegance into the design of each item using authentic Omani fabric from the heart of Muscat. The inspiration behind the collection has been the distinctive patterns of the Omani fabrics and the lifestyle of the Middle East which combines fashion and practicality. The boutique’s passionate drive for sophisticated shopping, promises shoppers with an exclusive and one-of-a-kind shopping experience. Since Boutique Muscat was first established as an online boutique, its founders noticed the importance of social media in an early stage of establishment. Being active users of Facebook themselves, developing a group came naturally to them. It was a means to go closer to their customers in terms of communication of new products and services as well as get immediate feedback. “Facebook has allowed us to have open discussions relevant to our members, from fashion to beauty and lifestyle. This allows greater interaction, immediate response and greater insights for us; about what women in Muscat need,” says Hanadi. Last word: “The reach of the medium is greater and the credibility is higher since customers are more than welcome to post their comments and feedback for everyone else to see.”

because I could be searched online with the use of tags, for example, ‘events, Oman, corporate gifts’, etc. “ Neha also used Facebook to great advantage while planning an event with popular DJ Aqeel from India. She hit upon the idea of creating an event invite on Facebook and sent out lots of invitations. Then, she started a small contest which gave away five free tickets. Each time, she posted a question, she got about 80 to 90 replies. This helped in creating pre-event hype and interest. “Social networking sites are great ways to share your work with new clients. A

s a journalist in Oman for the past 12 years, I have come across many stories, many of them heart-warming and inspirational. But most of all, the stories that touched my heart and made me feel proud were those of ordinary young women! Women who were not afraid to dream big and work hard to translate those dreams into reality! They were forerunners, in a generation that knew what it wanted and was ready to face any challenge or obstacle that came its way.

The 2010 Omani Women Campaign seeks to ‘Acknowledge, Celebrate and Empower’ Omani women, as we as a nation, celebrate 40 years of prosperity... Al Mar’a is also a proud partner of this enterprising initiative. Rekha Balaa reports.

I’d like to call it the Generation W. The new generation of women who are well-educated, smart, relentless in their pursuits and armed with big dreams, high ambitions and a grit and determination to move ahead in every sphere of life.

AUGUST 2010

The campaign launch coincided with South African visionary and leader Nelson Mandela’s 92nd birthday (July 18) designated by the United Nations as ‘Nelson Mandela International Day’. On this day, 2010 Omani Women joined hands with the South African embassy to promote their core non-profit programme, IQRA that focuses on spreading the message of knowledge among women, by providing them the skills to build their capacity and engage in community building making it the core element of every activity organised for the children.

The progress made by Omani women and their role in the comprehensive development of the Sultanate is a silent revolution, gathering pace and momentum as they continue to affirm their responsibilities and work hand-inhand with their male counterparts. Their ‘never say die’, spirit has put them where they rightfully belong – at the top.

The team behind Omani Women 2010 Campaign is a young bunch of likeminded and spirited individuals who have made this cause their mission. These include Eman bint Akbar Mohamed Rafay (Chairwoman), Muntaha bint Mohammed bin Yousf Al Zarafy (ViceChairwoman), Sharifa bint Mohammed Yousf Al Zarafy (Director of Operations), Wessam Abdul Monem Hussain Al Asfoor (Finance Director) and Aisha Stoby (Creative Director).

And giving a strong fillip to the role of Omani women in society is the recent launch of 2010 Omani Women, an awareness campaign that is aimed at highlighting the important roles Omani women have contributed to society and the economy during the last 40 years to inspire and motivate generations to come.

As a magazine celebrating the different shades of a woman, and a frontrunner to every woman’s cause in the Sultanate, Al Mar’a is proud to be a media partner of the 2010 Omani Women – Celebrating 40 years of Prosperity. This is a campaign, after our own heart and something we strongly believe in!

The awareness campaign celebrates how greatly favoured women have been under Omani law, steered by the vision of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. Celebrating 40 years of prosperity, the campaign will provide a national platform for Omani women where they can stand strong as examples of success, being the source of inspiration empowering others, because we are stronger ‘when we listen and smarter when we share’.

Al Mar’a spoke to Eman bint Akbar Mohamed Rafay and her team to know more about the youth-led campaign that’s making waves…

Such a lovely thought! And what a

wonderful way to show there are no limits to what women can achieve, if they put their minds to it!

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO LAUNCH THE COUNTRY’S FIRST YOUTH-INITIATED CAMPAIGN? “It’s interesting as we didn’t realise this until someone picked up on it before we went public. What people sometimes don’t know is that this campaign has taken us

two years, since it first evolved. And each one of us has been very dedicated along the way. Needless to say, it is quite exciting but at times we do really think and ask aloud, ‘What have the youth been doing’? Is it really true that in the 21st century we can be the first? But the time to mobilise the youth in becoming active citizens has come. And we are here not to be the exception but the norm. The success of our nation lies in the intellectual ability of our youth and they are our future.”

WHAT IS THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THE 2010 OMANI WOMAN CAMPAIGN? “Our philosophy is inspired by our reality. Today we reap the fruits of a vision His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said had 40 years ago. He implemented equality in his policies that were unheard of; he created an infrastructure which was non-existent and very importantly, he encouraged women and men to be educated and understand the power of knowledge ‘if only under the shade of a tree’. However,

24

we believe the momentum needs to be upheld and the rate of progress continued. Women need to continue to engage actively in contributing to their family, communities and the nation.”

THE VISION “2010 Omani Women is a non-profitable awareness campaign celebrating the achievements of Omani women, who lead by example in the region. We therefore call for men and women to unite, with a common goal, to help women of all generations to recognise their potential. It is an initiative led by the youth that symbolises pride in the 40 years of prosperity; celebrating the women in our lives, the role models, the icons and the silent heroes that exist in every household.”

WHAT ARE THE MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE CAMPAIGN AND HOW DOES THE TEAM PROPOSE TO TAKE THEM FORWARD?

“The campaign will host a string of charitable programmes from October (in celebration of Omani Women’s day) until mid-November with innovative competitions along the way to involve the public by raising awareness and funds to be invested in IQRA a long term sustainable grass-root programme which focuses on building the capacity of women via community based vocational activities. Our vision is to ACE IT! It means to Acknowledge, Celebrate and Empower generations to come.

THE ROLE OF OMANI WOMEN IN SOCIETY HAS CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY OVER THE YEARS. WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE REASONS FOR THIS? “It makes us feel so proud. But what’s extraordinary is that they have not only made a national impact but also influenced the role of women in the region, and Omani women are so gracefully humble about it.” “We as a nation follow the vision of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

“We have equal opportunities supported by national policies which allow all women to reach their limitless potential. We are encouraged as much as our brothers to shine, whether it is at home or work.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE CHALLENGES FACED BY OMANI WOMEN TODAY? “Challenges are a fact of life; they are what make life exciting. We wouldn’t ever dare to imagine life without them. It is also unfair on men, to focus only on the challenges of women as they too face similar, if not more challenges every single day. So in this way we are in fact very similar.”

Left to right: Sharifa bint Mohammed Yousf Al Zarafy and Muntaha bint Mohammed bin Yousf Al Zarafy

“However issues that affect women are universal and can be true for women all over the world. But from our experience we are so fortunate that the law supports and enables us to optimise the opportunities available, which should give fewer

reasons for excuses. But often culture, social norms and family expectations can limit the outcome. On the same note I do feel that we carve our own future taking or leaving the opportunities that come our way or we make them ourselves.” “We have such amazing examples of established women in Oman who are true inspirations. If we measure them against the entire population they are unfortunately a minority. Through the campaign, we highlight what we believe is lacking and that is self belief, motivation and encouragement. We are doing this by building the skills and capacity of women in order to enable them to believe in themselves and fulfil their true potentials.”

FOR THE OMANI WOMAN WHO WANTS TO CONTRIBUTE BUT DOES NOT PREFER PUBLIC OR ORGANISED CAMPAIGNS...

HOW CAN SHE AS AN INDIVIDUAL HELP IN CHANGING PERCEPTIONS OF THE ‘WOMAN’ IN OMAN “This perception can change, if it needs to be changed, but this can only happen organically by women capitalising on their ability or making sure they are the best; regardless of whichever role they choose. But the key is the act of making that choice for oneself.” “The campaign is set to honour women in every role, but encourages that that role is fulfilled to the best of one’s potential. And as we go further into the campaign there are endless opportunities where we will call upon men and women to aid us in our journey along the way whether you prefer public or private participation.”Q

ell, folks, the jury is still out on this one. It is a topic that is a perennial favourite with both men and women. Can men and women be just good friends? Many say yes. When Harry Met Sally however, offered up its viewers a resounding NO and a lot of people were inclined to believe the movie. They lived happily ever after, didn’t they? Professor Don O’Meara Ph.D., at the University of Cincinnati-Raymond Walters College published a study in the journal Sex Roles; the study basically explains that platonic love does exist but often takes a back seat to nonplatonic love, because members in a cross-sex friendship face many challenges. These challenges include but are not limited to overcoming physical attraction, defining the relationship and facing people’s responses to the relationship. And let’s face it. Monica and Chandler and Ross and Rachel in Friends didn’t really help things. Michael Monsour, assistant professor of communications at the University of Colorado at Denver and author of Women and Men as Friends berates television for portraying malefemale friendships as mere forerunners to epic romances... and well, simply put, planting nonsensical ideas into people’s heads.

d o o g t s u J ? s d n e i fr

Relationship experts also say that the idea that men and women can be friends is not completely ridiculous. The belief that platonic friendship is impossible comes from another era, when men and women were segregated in all walks of life. Linda Sapadin, a psychologist in Valley Stream, New York explains that this has changed now. They play sports together, study together and work together, and therefore should be able to maintain platonic friendships. If men and women are to to work, play and coexist in modern society, researchers b believe men and women must learn to understand and co communicate with each other.

‘Helps in better relationships’

“I definitely believe that men and women can be good friends. It’s important to have friends that are both men and women to be able to expand your horizons on different opinions and see and discuss things from a different point of view, especially in the world that we live in today. As a girl having friends who are guys gives you the opportunity to get out of your comfort zone sometimes and do activities which you normally wouldn’t do with your girlfriends, such as sports, etc. It also helps you to have better relationships and be able to understand other men in your life such as your husband, brother or father as you may have a better understanding of the ‘male perspective’! Life would be boring if we only stuck to having girl friends as a girl, or viceversa. As long as both people respect each other’s culture and traditions, good friendships can most certainly be made between men and women.”

DEE MARUSIC

‘Exclusive friendships can happen’ “I am one of the millions of people who have read John Gray’s best-seller, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. I

believe every human being, coming from either one of the planets, male or female, has countless questions, uncertainties, and curiosities about the opposing gender. Friendship with the opposite sex is one of the major topics that both sexes face. There are many factors that come along with this issue including religion, tradition, and culture, past experiences, values, and more. I will focus on culture and the role it plays in making this area of concern more or less grey. I grew up in the Middle East, where women were essentially homemakers and the men worked to bring home the dough. However, I lived in the US during my university years; a place that provided me with a different perspective on the topic at hand. Women and men worked together, went out in groups together, studied together, played sports with each other, and even formed strictly platonic relationships with each other. I obtained a new perspective on male-female relationships that is; it was no longer solely based on romance and physical desire. There was more to it. Men and women could be friends, exclusively. Through experience I learned that the more interaction between men and women, the more they understand each other, the more they acknowledge their differences, the more comfortable they become around each

‘All about being a real friend’

“I am quite sure that a man and a woman can be good friends. Friendship is about support, trust and is always grounded in a concern for the welfare of another person, for his or her sake. Even if that involves some kind of mutual goodwill and affection, the friendship can easily connect people of different sex, nationalities and religions. No need to see differences – just accept the responsibility of being a true friend, and do not forget to thank somebody for being a real friend to you! “

MARIA KOTYBAEVA

‘A fix for everything’ “I’d like to believe it’s totally possible but reality is that cross-sex friendship is not a thing for our society. However, I do believe there’s a fix for everything. I believe in friendly acquaintances where a relationship has been built with common interests being the foundation of the friendship. These friends are the work mates, spouse’s cousin, someone you work out with at the gym or see at your local book club, etc., who have a special place in your life but not special enough to hang out with for no specific reason or to spend time with just to get to know them better. These friendships could last a life-time but do not progress on an intimate level. Anything other than this between a man and woman in my opinion would lead to more than just friendship, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing provided both are single.”

FARHAT AL HARTHY 28

AUGUST 2010

‘Different insight and perspective’ “Men and women can be friends. We interact with men in our daily lives. We are often put in places and situations where we have to network and cooperate with them. This can be in college, at the workplace, social events, or work in team projects, corporate proposals and so forth. Of course there should be boundaries and clarity to the friendship otherwise one side might misread innocent intention. Friendship with men is quite different to the ones with women. Take for example, the communication style and observations. Men have a different insight and perspective to how they handle a problem. Men tend to be fixers as opposed to women who are listeners. This can be refreshing or annoying depending on the situation. As long as there is a mutual respect, clean and clear intentions, and no hidden motives, it is possible for both sides to be friends.”

INSHIRAH BAWAZIR other, the bigger the chance is of forming a friendship, strictly platonic, between each other. Exposure to the opposite sex therefore, opens the door for friendships to develop between the two, eventually making it almost natural to be a friend to and with the opposite sex. Consequently, I strongly believe that women and men can be friends.”

MARIANNE KARAM

‘It is normal’

“It has always been said that men and women cannot be just friends. But is it really true? But the truth is that there are some issues that you cannot discuss with someone from the same gender but you can definitely talk to with someone of the opposite sex. When you deal with people on a daily basis, friendships happen, irrespective of the fact that the person is male or female. I feel it is normal. However, the friendship also depends on the person whom you are dealing with. Some people cannot digest the idea of friendship between men and women. In that case, you need to set boundaries between them and yourself, and choose the people whom you want to be friends with.”

PASSION FOR

EDUCATION

Usha Ramesh Mani, Principal and Managing Director of Al Namoo School, Sohar speaks on the need to have a well-rounded education and how her school is attempting to bring a ‘different’ kind of quality education to the Sultanate. “Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I’ll understand.” - Chinese Proverb At Al Namoo Private School in Sohar, students are encouraged to get involved in all school activities, be they academic or extracurricular. Principal and Managing Director Usha Ramesh Mani insists that activities at the school are designed to interest and engross students. She should know well... She has more than 24 years of teaching experience behind her and continues to play a major role in shaping the lives of little ones, far away from her home country, in Sohar, Oman. Usha completed her Master’s in Education from the prestigious Bombay University in India and started her teaching career in 1986 and over the years has worked in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Dubai and now Oman. Her love for teaching began when she was very young. As she puts it, “When I was in college all the children from the neighbourhood approached me and my younger brother when they had any difficulties in their studies. My brother and I were always very good in academics and with our help the children also did very well in their exams. This made me realise that teaching is what I really enjoyed and teaching is what I wanted to do”. Today, she is principal and managing director of Al Namoo Private School in

Sohar. The school is a co-educational institution offering education in both English and Arabic. In a world of globalisation, Al Namoo Private School focuses on shaping its students into leaders, but more importantly, also into informed international citizens. We ask why Sohar and Usha cites her husband’s job as the reason. Her husband, Ramesh Mani is CEO of Majan Glass Company S.A.O.G and Honorary Advisory Chairman of the school. He relocated to Sohar in 2004. In essence she explains, “I can say Sohar chose me and I did not choose Sohar. I have no regrets as it is a beautiful place.” The school’s beautiful location complements its wellrounded syllabus. Usha explains that the school provides the best in education from the West and the East. “Academically we have the Cambridge affiliation. And it is the only school from Shinas to Tareef to be a Cambridge International Centre. We have the most advanced, most extensive Maths Genius Programme which no other School in the Sultanate of

Oman has. Under this Programme we are going to teach our students the Japanese Abacus and Mental Mathematics which is affiliated to Miyojama Institute of Soroban (Abacus) Education – Osaka, Japan,” she elaborates. While the school’s Cambridge affiliation and its Maths Genius Programme are some of its more exclusive activities, it also encourages children in other pursuits and interests like the Holy Quran Recitation Competitions, Arabic Calligraphy, Debates, Karate, Spelling Bees, Dramatics and much more. These activities along with the international syllabus establish a foundation for excellence in education. It is obvious that the curricular blends

effectively with co-curricular at Al Namoo Private School. “According to me, a well-rounded education includes encouragement, enthusiasm and positive reinforcement of facts and the skills taught at school. It is the extra-curricular activities and the ‘extra’ experiences, students’ gain that enable them to face all kinds of situations,” she says. When asked whether she has any interesting experiences to recollect, Usha dips into her long teaching career and shares a truly inspiring one. “Once in Dubai, when I was shopping at Carrefour, a young man came and wished me. I did not recollect who he was. He introduced himself as Lakshmichand, an old student of mine who was now working in the US as a software engineer. I remembered him as a very intelligent and hardworking boy belonging to a lower middle class family. I went back in time and suddenly remembered that he was in the school Science exhibition team which had won many awards. He used to often feel distressed because of his old uniform and shoes. But after being part of the winning team, he realised that other personality traits were more important. He thanked me profusely for building his confidence and helping him restore faith in his capabilities.” This was indeed a heart-warming story and speaks volumes about the kind of dedication Usha puts into her job. It also reflects the motto she lives by. “If you are passionate about your work success will always follow,” she says. Truly, after speaking to Usha Mani, we cannot but help admire and salute the role teachers continue to play in our lives. As Henry Adams once said, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” What more can we say but... may her tribe increase!Q

HE

is the most Googled celebrity ever! And his is also the most-kissed model at Madame Tussaud’s. Less actor, and more teenage icon, Robert Pattinson has women all the world literally swooning over him as he charms them with his on-screen vampire persona! He’s in, and he’s definitely hot.

The

‘Twilight’ Zone Robert Pattinson is currently employed as World’s Favorite Vampire. His pale faced, moony eyed, Bella character has women all over the world drooling. What’s more, he doesn’t bite, ladies!

32

AUGUST 2010

His first big break came in the form of the highly successful Harry Potter Movies. He played Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Such is Pattinson’s fame that today there is an entire group of Facebookers dedicated to going to the Twilight movies and shouting ‘Cedric Lives!’ while the movie is screening. The joke is a little passé, but it gets the point across. Women simply don’t care anymore. They don’t care if Pattinson is a vampire or a wizard; they’re on board with whatever he’s doing anyway. As long as he’s on screen, everybody’s happy. The men, admittedly, have a little more trouble digesting his obviously gorgeous, what-every-womenwants persona. Our ‘Edward Cullen’ was born Robert Thomas Pattinson on the 13th of May 1986, to parents Clare and Robert Pattinson. Pattinson spent most of his formative years in the United Kingdom. His mother, Clare was a model, while his father worked as an importer of vintage cars from the US. Pattinson spent most of his formative years in the United Kingdom. He went to Tower House School and Harrodion School, and enrolled in an institution that would teach him to do what he now does best – act. Yet that was not always the plan. Pattinson admits that he only became an actor because, “My dad saw a bunch of pretty girls in a restaurant and he asked them where they came from and they said drama group. He said, ‘Son that is where you need to go.’”

“SOMETIMES I THINK, ‘TO HELL WITH ACTING’ AND THEN I REALISE I COULD BE WORKING AT A SHOE SHOP. ACTING IS MUCH COOLER.”

what-a-man

STEPHENIE MEYER’S PORTRAYAL OF EDWARD CULLEN AS A BREATHTAKINGLY GOOD LOOKING VAMPIRE WITH A HEART TO BOOT HAS HAD GIRLS (AND WOMEN) OF ALL AGES MESMERISED.

And that apparently is where he did end up going! At Barnes Theatre Company, Pattinson began acting in amateur theatre, and caught the eye of an acting agent during a showing of Tess D’Urbervilles. From that point on, his professional acting career commenced. However, it would be years before his dreams of being a successful actor would come to fruition. Though young Pattinson’s future would lie in acting, he did not yet know it, and as his expeditions into the world of entertainment grew ever more adventurous, he began to dabble in various other professional fields, including, surprise surprise, modelling. What is slightly more shocking is just how unreceptive agents were towards what Pattinson had to offer. Twelve it seems was his ‘finding himself’ age. Pattinson himself agrees, “Up until I was 12 my sisters used to dress me up as a girl and introduce me as ‘Claudia’! Twelve was a turning point as I moved to a mixed school and then I became cool and discovered hair gel!” He received several offers to model for various organisations and companies. As he grew older, however, demand for his maturing looks died down. Pattinson deduced that in an era in which androgynous looks were all the rage, his masculine features deterred any potential modelling agencies from hiring him. So, just four years after initiating what he thought would be a lucrative career, the budding actor was forced to retire from modelling to pursue other fields. Pattinson had a hidden love for music that would only surface much later in his career. Between the ages of three and four, he played piano, and later, at the age of 12, began playing guitar. When he was 14 years old, Pattinson formed a rap trio. Unfortunately, its existence was shortlived. Meanwhile, Pattinson’s acting career was struggling to gain footing in the competitive world of Hollywood. His first major movie came when he was offered a role in the film Kingdom in Twilight at the age of 17. He later acted in Ring of the

34

AUGUST 2010

Nibelungs, and in Mira Nair’s Vanity Fair. However, Pattinson’s big break, as many will remember, came when he was offered a supporting role as Cedric Diggory in the box office sensation Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The movie was guaranteed to be a hit, and its 2005 release brought him into the limelight. Finally, in 2008, Pattinson worked once again in a movie adaptation of a novel, but this time beat out 5000 aspirants to take the lead character. This movie too was destined to be a worldwide success, and would spawn several overnight celebrities, including Pattinson himself, who would become less actors and more icons of teenage culture. We are talking, of course, about the Twilight saga, in which Pattinson acted as Edward Cullen. Stephenie Meyer’s portrayal of Edward Cullen as a breathtakingly good looking vampire with a heart to boot has had girls (and women) of all ages mesmerised. The men, for good reason (who can compete with vampires?), often find themselves hating him. Looks like Pattinson is no exception, “He’s the most ridiculous person who’s so amazing at everything. I think a lot of actors tried to play that aspect. I just couldn’t do it. And the more I read the script, the more I hated this guy, so that’s how I played him, as a manicdepressive who hates himself”. Today, Robert Pattinson is one of the most highly paid actors in Hollywood mainly due to the success of the Twilight saga. His musical talents, which he calls his, ‘backup plan’ are used, but sparingly. He sung two songs in the Twilight soundtrack, but other than that has left his musical career in the back seat. Says he, “I still try and play but its weird now since when I’m trying to do it as an actor, it always seems kind of cheesy. I liked playing at open mikes in bars and stuff because it was the only time I really felt free. I did a couple of gigs in LA and people filmed and put them on the Internet. It just ruins the whole experience. You’re like ‘Oh, that wasn’t the point.’ So I stopped. I’m going to wait for all this to die down before I start doing live gigs again.”

Pattinson has won several accolades since his appearance in the Twilight series. He has been named one of the sexiest men alive by People Magazine two years in a row (2008 and 2009), and has won several acting awards, including six Teen Choice Awards and four MTV Movie Awards. His main demographic, teenage girls, are always fawning over him, and as a result, he has to have constant supervision by bodyguards. He remains ambivalent about his fame; grateful for all the fans, he is sometimes not sure if acting and money is really his thing. Millions of fans could help him make up his mind of course, but looks like deep down Pattinson knows that acting is his forte, “Sometimes I think, ‘To hell with acting’ and then I realise I could be working at a shoe shop. Acting is much cooler.” His down-to-earth attitude towards his fame, his awkward clumsiness in interviews and that shy half laugh he sometimes does when he’s caught off guard has the world mesmerized. Recently though, with the Twilight franchise fast turning out new movies, Pattinson now finds himself sharing the limelight with a new contender for the Twifans heartsTaylor Lautner, who plays werewolf Jacob Black, is equally good looking, albeit in a completely different way. Pattinson agrees that the werewolf is somehow more manly than the pale skinned, love-lorn vampire, ‘Taylor quite frequently out-mans me, so seeing him in that little Spandex outfit made me feel much better about myself. He looked great in it, though.” Pattinson has gone from being a little known actor to a celebrity sensation. He earns millions of big bucks and is the latest tabloid darling. The young actor though, still has goals that need fulfilling. Says he, “I definitely want to record an album, direct a film and start my own religion. I definitely wouldn’t have to pay taxes anymore”. Our verdict? Well, we’re die-hard Twifans and like all Twifans, we’d watch you do anything and still think you were brilliant Rob! We only have one request; can we play Bella? Please? Q

AUGUST 2010

Haven’t we all dreamt of whipping up exotic dishes that look like they’ve come straight from a gourmet kitchen? Well, the cooking classes at Grand Hyatt Muscat might just be able to turn those fantasies to reality, says Sushmita Sarkhel

If

you’ve been pouring over the glossy pictures in cookbooks and berating your cooking skills (or lack thereof), here’s your chance to turn everything around. Over the past year, Grand Hyatt Muscat has been conducting special cooking classes entitled ’Cooking at Tuscany’ just for us womenfolk. You now have the opportunity to create culinary masterpieces under the guidance of some the best chefs in town. Tuscany has been widely acclaimed as one of the best Italian restaurants in Muscat with a loyal clientele and has won many accolades, including ‘Best Foreign Cuisine in Oman 2010’ by the prestigious German publishing house Berliner Tageszeitung.

Fabrizio Valdetara, Chef de Cuisine, hails from Torino in Northern Italy and his inspiration is mainly taken from Piedmont cuisine. In the month of May, he taught a class of about 20 women, how to recreate three classic Italian dishes: tuna tartar with herbs and orange emulsion; shrimp cannelloni with shellfish reduction and classic Italian Tiramisu. The art of cooking is a sensuous one, and in these classes the ladies had the opportunity to see, smell, touch and taste what they were cooking at each and every step. One of the best features of these cooking classes is that everyone manages to get valuable hands-on experience. Not only did the chefs teach them how to go about the dishes but the ladies also got to learn the real reasoning behind the choice of ingredients. They had ample opportunities to interact with Chef Valdetara who seemed to be more than happy to answer questions and help them understand the concepts and techniques that go behind each and every dish. Interaction with the chefs also allowed them to pick up tips that others might not have access too. Of course, just preparing the dish isn’t enough. The class was also taught how to garnish and present the dishes and give it that extra oomph. It goes without saying that nothing equals the learning

experience of a real cooking class. And the ladies certainly seemed to be having a great time. The class ended with the ladies enjoying a leisurely lunch at the restaurant (which is included in the price of the class). If these cooking classes have piqued your interest then here’s some more good news. Tuscany will be resuming the classes in the month of September. These classes are anticipated to be smaller in size, thus ensuring that they are more hands-on than the previous ones. There will also be other different classes to look out for according to Executive Chef Marin Leuthard , “In winter, when the weather has cooled down, special Indonesian cooking classes will be scheduled to be held outdoors by the beach in conjunction with the hotels Indonesian restaurant, Marjan. A guest chef from Indonesia will be flown in exclusively for this purpose.” ‘Cooking at Tuscany’ is not merely a cooking class. It’s a place where you can learn the right way to balance food textures and flavours. It’s where you discover the secret to making the perfect meal every time you step into your kitchen. Whether you’re a rookie or an aspiring Martha Stewart these classes are sure to take your cooking skills to a whole new level.Q

Sylvia Plath once said, “There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them.” We at Al Mar’a would like to add to that and say that hot baths followed by luxurious spa treatments can cure you of anything. And, we should know! As journalists, we hardly get the time to pamper ourselves, except when an occasional review opportunity comes by, of course. So, when the said opportunity presented itself in the form of treatments at CHI The Spa at Shangri-La, we were more than glad to escape the daily inanities of work and head for some quality pampering. If there was any hesitation on our part, it vanished at the sight of the calm, serene interiors of the Spa’s

These elements would subsequently help our therapist decide the oil to be used for the treatment. We were then taken inside to the spa facilities, where we changed and got ready for the ultimate spa experience ever. As we waited for our therapists, we reclined in the comfortable couches, and indulged in some healthy tea and popped some of the lovely mint candies. health

D

uring the holy month of Ramadan, a few physical changes occur in our body. So, care should be taken to keep your body fit and free from problems during this period. Those who fast are exposed to conditions like a dry mouth, bad oral taste or bad breath. So a lot of importance should be given to oral hygiene too!

Keep Smiling!

Oral hygiene is of utmost importance during the fasting period. Dr Seema Bhandari of Al Abraj Dental Clinic says that a little care goes a long way in preventing problems like xerostema and bad breath.

Fasting means that there is a lack of muscle activity in the mouth, which leads to a reduction in the quantity of saliva produced and causes the mouth to remain dry. This is called xerostema. The washing action and antiseptic effects of the saliva are reduced, and as a result there can be mild ulceration or gingivitis. Bad breath also known as halitosis is also a problem, though it can be temporary and subsides after breaking the fast. Redness or soreness of gums is very common. Already existing underlying dental problems can come to the fore suddenly and turn into an emergency. For example, if a tooth has a cavity it can become hypersensitive and start causing pain. This can be due to the exposure of a nerve or contact with hot, cold or sweet food or drink, resulting in a dull, persistent ache. Anaerobic bacteria multiply at the back of the tongue and cause fungal infections. Rarely, molars can become painful without apparent reason. This is because the periodontal ligament supporting the tooth is inactive. Hence before the start of the holy month of Ramadan, try to visit a dentist and check if you have any problems. This will ensure that

48

AUGUST 2010

no infection resurfaces during the period and cause pain and swelling. Problems like these should be attended to immediately: • Required scaling is a must to prevent bad breath. • Broken teeth kept for a long time needs immediate filling. • Un-erupted wisdom tooth (last tooth) if impacted will cause pain and lock jaw. • Existing bleeding gums or gingivitis need medication and care. A few simple precautions and a little care go a long way in preventing dental problems during the month of Ramadan. Here are a few tips for you to follow: • After breaking the fast consume lots of water and fresh juice to prevent dehydration. • Avoid fizzy and other sugary drinks. • Sweets and chocolate can produce acids in the teeth and eat away the enamel producing cavities and caries. So stay away from them. • Avoid hot or cold beverages as they produce thermal shock to the tooth, causing hypersensitivity. • Very hot food like pizzas, cheese and potatoes can scald a dry palate, causing injury to oral tissues. • Select a medium toothbrush with a small head because a soft brush will not clean the teeth completely, giving rise to tartar and a hard brush will cause injury to the gums or teeth. • Brush regularly after iftar to maintain oral hygiene. And last but not the least; don’t delay your visit to the dentist when the need arises.Q

Moroccan Style! Looking for a short break not too far away? Morocco is the place to head to and specifically to the Sofitel Rabat Jardin des Roses and Sofitel Marrakech Lounge and Spa, says Marie-Claire.

M

ention to your friends that you are off to Morocco for a few days and see the light of envy twinkle in their eyes. There is something about the name alone that conjures up images of the exotic and the romantic that is hard to resist for even the most jaded of travellers. Now mention the fact that you will be staying in a couple of Sofitel hotels while you are there and watch as their faces turn a fetching shade of green. Three nights each in the Sofitel Rabat Jardin des Roses, named for its sprawling gardens with over three thousand roses, and the Sofitel Marrakech Lounge and Spa and I officially now have a new favourite chain of hotels.

AUGUST 2010

With over 150 properties worldwide, the latest jewel in the hotel chain’s crown is the Sofitel Rabat, located in the heart of the capital and just a few minutes from the historic Royal Palace. Ideally located for both business and leisure travellers and with four golf courses nearby and a small practice course on the hotels grounds, it is also the dream location for any golfing enthusiast. The trademark of the Sofitel brand is to create unique, contemporary luxury hotels and resorts by artfully blending its French origins with the very best of local cultures and the Jardin des Roses is no exception. Water, amber and roses are the prevalent themes throughout the hotel and provided the main design inspirations for architect Karim Chakor and interior designer Didier Gomez, successfully perfecting the hotel’s aim to combine French elegance with traditional Moroccan culture. From the moment you walk into the property there is no doubt in your mind you are in for a luxurious treat to your senses, from the subtle but delicious aroma of roses that envelopes the spacious and graceful lobby to mouth-watering creations offered in any of the hotel’s three restaurants and the tempting promise of pampering and relaxation offered by the hotel’s 1200 sq.m SO SPA that offers

exclusive tailor-made packages to meet your needs. Throughout the 229 rooms, including 37 suites, guests comfort is the ultimate aim. All the rooms are fully equipped with Sofitel’s unique My Bed concept, which gives you the impression of sleeping on a big cozy cloud, and a lighting system that allows you to set the exact mood and ambiance you desire as well as Bose sound systems, in-room iPod and Nespresso coffee machines. After settling in and enjoying the view of the city and the sea from the balcony of my room, it was time to relax after a long trip and spoil myself with a massage treatment in the SO SPA. Walking into the spa I was greeted with warm smiles and heart-felt wishes for a truly unique experience and I wasn’t disappointed. After sipping on a rose cocktail and nibbling on macaroons around a water fountain, I made a quick trip to the changing room and was then ushered into a warm and peaceful treatment room where I had a refreshing waterfall shower before lying down on a heated massage table. My ears were treated to the gentle sounds of ambient music mixed in with the soothing sounds of waves lapping against a shore that lulled me into an almost hypnotic state

of relaxation. As I lay there feeling more rested than I can ever remember, the massage began with a taste of honey on my lips followed by a succession of gentle but delicious smells passed under my nose throughout the hour and by the end of it all the thought of getting up was the last thing on my mind. The whole experience was then rounded off with traditional mint tea and more delicious sweet treats to nibble on while reclining in the comfort of the communal spa lounge. Dinner that night was in the hotel’s Moroccan Al Warda restaurant which offered a wonderful contemporary twist to traditional Moroccan cuisine in an exotic ambiance that wouldn’t look out of place on the set of A Thousand and One Tales, with its cushion comfy seating and beautiful traditionally hand carved ceiling. The official opening party for the hotel was held the following evening and was truly a night to remember, with guests being ushered in through a column of traditional dancers and musicians before being treated to classical music, ballet and modern dance performances from artists imported from France, all interspersed with fashion shows from local Moroccan designers and held in the beautiful hotel gardens. To round off the evening was a concert by French heart-throb Danny

Brilliant followed by dancing in the hotel’s Amber Bar. A lovely lazy day by the hotel’s very inviting swimming pool, where you can lie around on four poster bed-like loungers, was the perfect way to recuperate the next day before heading off for our last dinner in Rabat. If I’d had any doubts I was in Morocco, Le Ziryab, a traditional Moroccan restaurant in the heart of the capital’s souq area, would have put paid to them all. After walking through dark winding alleys, with various beautiful but old and rundown doors on either side, you suddenly come to an ornate double door that opens up into the most surprising and delightful two story restaurant, complete with carved marble pillars and Moroccan band playing old traditional music as you gorge on course after course of sumptuous mezze, tagine and cous cous. And at the end, to make sure you make it safely back to the main street, a guide in traditional costume holding a lamp leads you back though the winding alleys. Waving goodbye to a fabulous three nights of luxury at the Sofitel Jardin des Roses, it was time to head to Marrakech,

60

AUGUST 2010

also referred to as the Red City, since all the building are made of varying shades of reds and terracottas, giving them all a magical glow as the sun sets. If Rabat was a wonderful experience, Marrakech was a dream and the Sofitel Marrakech Lounge and Spa, while maintaining the Sofitel’s reputation for excellence and luxury was the polar opposite of the Jardin des Roses, with its Andalusian contemporary style architecture and décor that brings to mind a more rustic and exotic side of Moroccan life. As you walk up the stairs to the main hotel entrance you come across a large terrace with plush sectional seating and décor that tempts you to sit and relax before entering the hotel proper. Moroccan mint tea and multi coloured macaroons welcome you before checking in and heading to your room. Complete with the My Bed experience the rooms have a warm traditional feel to them with carved wood sconces and mosaic tiles in the bathrooms as well as a cosy balcony overlooking the large pools (yes that’s with an ‘s’ on the end) and

beautiful lush green gardens filled with hammocks and giant sized beanbags to comfortably while away a few hours in the sun sipping on a drink, chatting with friends or reading a book. If I could have described a dream destination to go on holiday to, this would have been it. With its sense of peace, serenity and sensuality the hotel is a veritable oasis right in the heart of the most elegant part of town and only a short walking distance away from the famed Jema Al Fna square, as well as the most fashionable clubs, bars and casinos. With an art gallery in the hotel as well as a host of boutiques, including Louis Vuitton, there is plenty to help you pass your time and leaving the hotel is by no means necessary but no trip to Marrakech would be complete without trip to the souq. With its host of colours and spices to be admired and goodies to be bought, there’s something for everyone and while you might have to spend some time haggling over the prices, you’re bound to return to the hotel laden with trinkets and souvenirs you never previously knew you couldn’t do without.

Another must stop destination when in Marrakech is Chez Ali, an outdoor restaurant that can hold up to 1000 diners, and where along with ridiculously large amounts of delectable Moroccan food, you are entertained by troops of dancers and musicians that weave between the tables before the main attraction of the evening beings; a daring demonstration of swordsmen on horseback. Morocco is quite simply every bit the exotic dream destination you imagine it to be and to couple it with the luxury and style of the Sofitel Hotel brand is to complete the experience. Anyone can provide the luxury of a comfortable bed and strawberries dipped in chocolate at turn down service but the true test of luxury is in the details. It is the little gold balls sprinkled on top of the strawberries that pop delightfully in your mouth and the waterfall shower automatically set at a perfect 38˚ or the spritz of a delicate perfume on your hands before you sip one of their trademark drinks that sets the Sofitel apart and is guaranteed to have you coming back for more and more‌ and more!Q

ANGER Management

won’t let her play with the dollhouse is fine. Expressing that anger by breaking said dollhouse? Not okay. Instead, teach her non aggressive methods to get her point across. Remind her that talking politely can be a very effective way of solving problems; much more effective for example, than kicking someone or something which does not solve anything. Talk your children through their anger and explain clearly and firmly the right way and the wrong way to express their emotions.

All parents have to deal with temper tantrums at one point or another. Mahreen Sohail tells us how to get yourself and your child through them unscathed...

M

os of us grew up in an era ost w where anger was believed to be a ‘negative’ emotion. Fe Feelings of anger arose out an we were taught, that of frustration, and chi well behaved children ‘don’t get angry’. Today, parenting styles have changed. emo Anger, as an emotion is a very real force lif and as such, you need in your child’s life i Asking your child why to acknowledge it. s he or she broke something is not going to work. You know the answer already. They t broke it because they were angry. Learn to focus on helping your kids find a way to ang in a healthy manner. channel their anger tri Here are some tricks and tips that you can you child’s emotions do use to ensure your wit him too often! not get away with

AGGRESSION VS ANGER AGGRESSIO An early lesson y you have to teach your kid is that anger is a healthy emotion; one that they should sho not be ashamed of. However, aggression aggres is not okay. For example, your daughter d must know that feeling angry because bec her older sister

PRAISE YOUR CHILD Anger stems from frustration. And let’s face it; life is frustrating, so there’s really no way you can stop your kid from being affected by it. But it stands to reason that children coming from homes where they feel loved will be less effected by ‘external frustrations’ they encounter at school, in the playground etc. Often, a child who feels loved will not get angry at every little thing, knowing that they have a family unit that supports and appreciates them for who they are. Little disappointments like not winning the spelling bee or that race at school, will tend to irritate them to a lesser degree.

MAKE SPACE When your child gets angry, give them their space. Do not indulge the anger, but allow them to blow off steam by going up to their room, going to the park with an elder sibling, walking, muttering- basically whatever it takes, as long as they’re not engaging in overtly aggressive behaviour, is fine. Sometimes, if it really is not their fault, try to diffuse the situation by using humour. Remember don’t laugh at them, but try and make the situation itself seem

funny. Allowing them to see the lighter side of things can be a great diffuser of tense situations. ‘She called you a smelly sock? Well then, she must not be very smart at all’ would work. Saying ‘Why would you get upset at someone calling you a sock? You are so stupid’ would not.

REAP THE REWARDS Just like it’s okay for you to tell yourself

you deserve the extra calories after a week of going to the gym, it’s also okay for you to reward your kids for good behaviour. This will allow them to understand that reacting ‘nicely’ leads to better results than reacting to a situation in a petulant manner. Get your child his or her favourite candy etc. after he or she has displayed good control over his anger. This will reinforce the lesson that the way you react can often lead to what was an unpleasant situation turning into a pleasant one. Most of all, remember to allow your children some leeway. Temper tantrums are part of life and as much as it pains you, you have to give your child some room to grow. Chances are he/she will break a rule at least three times, before

figuring out which rules you are serious about and which they can work their way around. Good parenting is synonymous with flexible parenting. As a parent, you know your child best, and it’s up to you to decide when a situation deserves punishment or a mere cursory slap on the wrist. Either way don’t be too harsh for too long. Often kids will develop a ‘they always react like that’ mentality and go for it anyway. Let’s face it, parenting is a slippery slope, and there are no real do’s and don’ts. A good rule of thumb most parents follow but never admit to using is to just wing it most of the time, while remembering to add lots of love, attention and laughter to your child’s life in the process.Q

Friendship is just another relationship but one that combines trust, support, loyalty, empathy and intimacy and should never be taken for granted, says Dr Prema Seshadri

Essence of

Friendship

64

AUGUST 2010

“T

ell me how many childhood friends have you kept in touch with? Come on. Count them on your fingers.” And she proceeded to do so. One slender, beautiful, manicured finger after another opened out with those definite clicking sounds – a sound that can only come with high achievement! And I sat there looking as attractive as only a wide-open mouthed, gaping, goldfish could look, absolutely mesmerised by those clicking fingers, (and I do believe that the Creator had truly favoured her with more than a pair of hands) every resounding click a latch that opened up the zillion inadequacies that I was so busy fighting forever. And, oh yes, that profound rhetoric came from a woman; only a woman can carry off such oratory with such pride and satisfaction. So, coming back to that triumphant display of success, a couple of slightly less manicured hands went up halfway with digits of one and a half hands being clicked. My hands stayed on my lap. I couldn’t think of one name that could have willed a finger to be clicked. At that time, I thought it to be a huge tragedy. But in retrospect, there were many lessons learnt, new perceptions dawned, and new approaches adopted. I wondered why I could not make friends. Even more importantly, I wondered why I could never sustain a friendship. I found some answers. But the most significant realisation was that I hadn’t formed that one most

important friendship – which was with myself. And once I did, which believe me is a long and tedious and often times painful journey but which at the end pays enormous dividends, perceptions changed dramatically. Being comfortable with oneself means feeling at home with oneself. It’s almost like putting your feet up on the coffee table, in whatever comfy clothes that you want to wear, do what you want to do, and feel the way you want to feel. You are no longer performing and that’s a relief. That’s exactly what happens in a meaningful, in-depth relationship. Friendship is just yet another title to a relationship which combines trust in big doses, a support without judgment, a communication which is open, loyalty without question, an understanding which is genuine, empathy without being patronising, and an intimacy without compromises. Such a relationship is not easily formed. It requires enormous effort, plenty of fortitude, and no expectations whatsoever. And once the relationship has been set, it is wise to know and remember that it is not set in stone. We are mere mortals dictated every moment by the vagaries of all factors within and out. Friends have been known to turn into foes more than the reverse. Nor can the relationship be taken for granted. It requires nourishment. But beware of over-watering since that will decompose the very roots of the relationship. There is a lot of sense in the age-old adage that ‘familiarity breeds contempt’. The process of relating is so very complex. But we are basically homing pigeons. We gravitate towards comfort and acceptance, towards communication and understanding, towards ‘home’. That is our most natural and urgent craving. It is that very bottom rung of Maslow’s pyramid which needs to be kept constantly

satisfied irrespective of from where this need is satisfied. That is why relationships are not gender-based. It can be culturebased but not necessarily gender-based. It is true that there are several aspects of a woman that are best understood only by women. Women more often than not are not looking for an analytical understanding from the other. She probably understands the pros and cons better than anyone else does and is not looking for reaffirmation. There is a deeper, albeit more complex, dynamics happening within her that she is looking to address and communicate which only another woman can empathise with. But along with the ability to empathise women also are prone to possess a competitive streak that can come in the way of total trust and respect. However, when a woman puts aside her need for oneupmanship and genuinely focuses on the needs of the other woman, she becomes the proverbial manna from heaven. Men derive their strength from logic while women trust their intuition. These significant differences do create huge chasms in the communication between the two thus not permitting the kind of bonding and friendship that exists between two women. But when men put aside their differences and delve into their own sensitivity, they make the best of confidants and offer a strong supporting shoulder. But ultimately, friendship is all about a personal choice laced with huge dollops of luck!Q

life, etc

Success does not always lead to happiness… So it is essential to find a sense of quality and joy in every step or action says Dr Nada Al Ajmi

I

have heard many people saying that whatever they achieve, they will soon be unhappy again. No matter how successful they become, something will be amiss and they will run to seek pleasure and joy in something new. Can you relate to that? Nothing can be more painful than achieving what you want yet not being able to find happiness. If this is how you feel, then wake up. What you are experiencing is living in forgetfulness of BEING. When you forget the essence and purpose of your being, you completely identify with the material forms around you which induce more want and greed and ends in a paralysing feeling of fear; the fear of losing. Losing what? Losing anything that can break the ego in you: the fear of losing anything that makes you more important and bigger. If you are living upto an image that you have of yourself or that other people have of you and creating a façade that conceals reality, then you are living a life of double standards, and this is the game of the ego with you. What is guaranteed is that the ego ultimately takes you from moments of victory to days of misery and disappointment! The world tells you to

66

AUGUST 2010

define success as achieving what you set out to do. The essential requirements of success then become winning, finding recognition, and prosperity. Although the above ingredients are, in most cases, the by-products of success, they are not success itself, because they cannot guarantee happiness. This conventional notion of success constantly urges you to define achievement in relation to the outcome of what you do, whereas the true essence of success that guarantees happiness is the quality of the input you place in the moment which can always create a ‘successful now. And that is when you find a sense of quality and joy in every step of your action, however simple it maybe. When you consciously give your care and attention fully to everything you do in life, it creates a

sense of awareness of your existence and your main purpose of life. It makes you aware of the moment and thus allows you to see the joy and happiness in every scenario. That is when you feel success at your presence, at your being, which does not depend upon outside and futuristic factors. The only way to reach there is to live your life honestly and genuinely, far away from pretence. Be conscious of your ultimate purpose in every moment in your life. There is always this moment ‘now’ that if you give it your fullest attention and care, you can guarantee happiness. What the future holds for you depends on the quality of your actions now. workwise

Back to W

I

t’s been the perfect holiday; sandy beaches, lots of sun and lots of shopping. You’ve come back slightly broke but filled to the brim with a feeling of satisfaction. “Time well spent” you say to yourself. But, to misquote an old saying, there is a tunnel at the end of every light, and your tunnel is the dreaded Saturday you’re expected back at work. There is a boss to be faced; he blames his frazzled nerves on your absence. Your colleagues are quite probably envious of your newly acquired tan, and there is a mountain of paper work piled up on your work desk. You are starting to think that the work lag that piled up during your time off will haunt you till the end of your time with the company. Now, you can feel your tan wilt. That feeling of satisfaction and contentment you were gushing about? It’s nowhere to be found. How does one come back to work after some time off? It’s hard, I’ll give you that, especially when the said hiatus was because you were off on maternity leave, or away because you had to give some exams, or were getting married. Sometimes, you come back to work after having faced enormous

68

AUGUST 2010

It’s not easy getting back to work after a holiday or a hiatus... Mahreen Sohail outlines some tips that will help you ease into the ‘back to work’ routine...

personal issues and the added stress of coping with work can be hard to handle. Fear not though, whilst challenging, getting your nose back down on that grindstone can be done! Just follow these easy tips below.

MEET THE COLLEAGUES As soon as you get back to work, set up meetings with your colleagues, your supervisors and your subordinates to catch up on what’s been going on since you’ve been gone. Not only is this a great way to get back in the flow of things, it gives you a sense of what’s been going on, lets you get a handle on that office

rk

gossip and gives you an overview of what the next few weeks will look like (work wise) for you. If your bosses or your subordinates seem to resent the fact that you’ve been away, politely and firmly make it clear that your absence was approved by your employer (at least, I hope it was).

ORGANISE AND PRIORITISE That first dreaded view of your over flowing desk can be daunting. Sit down and take an hour or so to review the work that needs to be done. If need be, make a list of things that have to be looked into-in order of most important

to least important. Completing that pending project will be more important than say, finding your office tea mug that seems to have disappeared during your absence.

TALK TO YOUR SUPERVISORS Most employers these days understand that their most important assets are their employees. As such, organisations have employee-management welfare managers or employee-management relationship managers in place. If you took time off for deeply personal reasons (maternity leave, stress, messy divorce), chances are coming back to work will not be a picnic. Talk to your welfare manager and let him or her know what’s going on. Not only is this a great stress buster, but it keeps the company abreast of your mental state of mind. Should you need to take further time off, often welfare managers will act on your behalf and recommend extended leave to your boss. For new mothers, coming back to work can be especially hectic. Find out about flexi hour plans and day care services provided by the company to make the transition from mother to working mother easier.

TAKE IT SLOW Don’t try and do everything at once as soon as you return; you’ll bite off more than you can chew and end up completing bewildered by the seemingly

endless amount of work waiting for you! Take it easy, at least for the first week or so. Take some time to get your bearings back before launching into the full flow of things! Hopefully, this will stave off the coming-back-to-work stress syndrome!

REFRESHER COURSES If you’ve been gone a long time, things have changed in the way people do business and around the work place. health plus Have all your gynaecological queries answered by Dr. Smita Lulla — MBBS, M.D, D.G.O. (Gold Medallist), Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Qurum Clinic, Muscat. The veteran doctor has had advanced training in the UK in Obstetric & Gynaecological Ultra-sonography & Infertility.

I am 22 years old and unmarried. I have been having irregular periods due to hormonal imbalance. My gynecologist advised me to take Meprate for three months. I’m now getting my periods within a week of completion of this tablet. I feel I’ve put on weight. Can you tell me how to overcome this side effect? Meprate can cause an increase in weight. You can consult your doctor to try and reduce the days of Meprate to only 5-7 days (from the 15th day ). This would still get you a period without much weight gain. I am 27 years old and married for two years. I have been diagnosed with PCOD. My doctor put me on Metformin and folic acid. All other tests have turned out to be normal. My doctor gave me Letroz last month when I went for follicular study. The size was 2.4mm on the 12th day and increased to 3.5mm on the 15th day. Can you suggest what I should do? Should I go for a laparoscopy or continue taking Letroz? You can continue taking Letroz and monitor on ultrasound to determine your fertile period. Have you checked your tubes? If not, you can do a hysterosalpingography (X-ray to

determine whether your tubes are open or not. Laparoscopy would determine the same, but that involves surgery. If the tubes are ok, you can try IUI (intra uterine insemination) for 2-3 cycles. All the best! I am 26 years old and married for a year. I had irregular periods and was also recognized with subclinical hypothyroidism. I have been taking Thycroup 25mcg and have also completed a course of Ginette. My doctor has also asked me to take Divery 10mg from 18th to 24th day calculating the first day of my periods as day 1. But I again got my periods on the 15th day itself. I was asked to continue the same tablets. We are planning to have a baby and I don’t know what to do. I think you also need to see an infertility specialist. I would prefer that you take duphaston rather than Deviry when you are planning to conceive. You have to continue your thyroid tablets, anyway. All the best! I have suffered from irregular periods since the age of 13. However, a doctor advised me to induce it with Myrcogynon. When I stopped, I did not get my periods of six months after which I was

given Duphaston for three months. Now I want to get pregnant. What should I do? Have an ultrasound done to determine whether you have PCO (polycystic ovaries). Also have your thyroid hormone (TSH) checked. An abnormality in this can also cause irregular periods. On day 3 of your period, do a serum FSH and LH. This would also determine what sort of treatment you would require to get pregnant. Let me know the results, so I can advice you further. I have had two miscarriages. After the second miscarriage I got some blood tests done. The results for antibodies showed that my antiCardiolipin IGM was 3.8 MPL/ml and it should not exceed three. My doctor has advised me to take Ascard (75 mg) along with folic acid as soon as I conceive next time. I want to know is it safe to take Ascard during pregnancy as it is Aspirin. Ascard is a low dose Aspirin and has found to give good results in preventing a miscarriage. Several studies have been done and it has been found to be safe in pregnancy when taken as one tablet a day of 75mgm.

fashion There’s certainly no generation gap between these two, especially when it comes to fashion.

A tale of two generations! The mother-daughter duo Batool Hassan and Lubna Al Lawati of Danat Al Khaleej Fashion House has taken the fashion world by storm with their superb blend of the traditional and the modern…

Batool Hassan and Lubna Al Lawati of Danat Al Khaleej Fashion House signify the changing face of the fashion designing world. Their designs are modern, but are also created keeping in mind the ‘modesty’ element, a dominant influence in most Arabic designs. Rich embroidery from the East adds shimmer to traditional wear and jalabiyas. The colours are mostly in floral shades and exude elements of joy and happiness. They are ably helped by Fatma Zafar, Lubna’s aunt in Pakistan. The duo’s new Ramadan & Eid Collection weaves in the magic of the East with modern styles. These are outfits perfect for Ramadan evenings or Eid get-togethers. Al Mar’a spoke to Batool and Lubna on all things fashion… Here’s what they had to say…

Foray into fashion designing… “Happened in 2005.” Your inspiration comes from… “Ethnic designs. I like to dip into the vast ocean of traditions…” Your fashion line… “Is mostly traditional and different types of jalabiyas.” Your dream is… “To make every woman look beautiful.” Your best design… “We have designed many outfits but our personal favourite is a gold and turquoise bridal dress with rich and ethnic embroidery on the blouse, skirt and veil. It was embellished with turquoise stones and crystals. Another favourite was a traditional red and green ‘Lawati’ dress in pure silk with ornate embroidery.” The colour of the season is… “Pastel shades are the best for summer as it helps you feel cool.” The fabric of the season is… “Chiffon. The fabric gives you nice falls and folds.” Your advice to every woman is… “To wear what suits her best.”

What the

stars

ARIES - August brings exciting new energy for romance and creativity. So take full advantage! On the work front, avoid shortcuts on the job, or you will need to redo a lot of things. Partnerships can be on the competitive side, but you are likely to appreciate that matters are out in the open so that they can more easily find resolution. A secret is revealed or something hidden comes to light at the end of the month.

VIRGO It’s time for a review and also for contemplation. But learn to put the past behind you. It’s not the time for major decision making or goal setting, but great for ridding yourself of problems weighing you down. Financially, there are many benefits coming your way. You’re able to come up with some especially creative money-making ideas this month.

TAURUS - It will all be humdrum but the truth is that much of your attention is directed towards work, fitness and other routine matters this month. Work can be competitive but nothing that you cannot face. If you are in love, this is the time to spend some wonderful moments together. Home and family are also vying for your attention, so happily tend to them.

LEO It’s all about being communicative this month, dear Leo. You are interested in improving your skills and expanding your mind. Contact with others can help jumpstart your creativity this month. Avoid speculation and going on shopping sprees. Plan carefully before making large purchases and other important financial decisions. Your personality though will be especially bright and sunny this August. 84

AUGUST 2010

pushing yourself to the maximum is more stimulating than a fixed work routine. But take care not to be a part of petty office politics, it will work against you. There’s a lot of creative energy this month, so make the most of it. SAGITTARIUS It’s time to try and find a balance between speaking your mind and trying to be discreet. Yes, dear Sagittarius, being blunt does not always work to your benefit. Situations will arise, that will be disconcerting… and you need to learn to be diplomatic. But take heart, a lot of adventure is in store. Try and take a quick break and get back to life with renewed energy. CAPRICORN Work may take precedence over your career, dear Capricorn but that does not mean that you neglect your family. As much as it is difficult, you simply must find the time to be with your loved ones. The need to discipline yourself and structure your time on a professional level also becomes apparent. A flurry of activity at the end of the month is likely, so try not to stress yourself out.

GEMINI - Family matters take precedence this month, dear Gemini. Children could do with improved schedules and discipline. A creative project suddenly demands attention. Think of taking up a creative hobby or pastime. At work, things may go a bit slow as you require more time to think things through than usual. CANCER A lively month is in store of you this August. You will have to shoulder more responsibilities this month at both home and at work. But you definitely will find the energy to pay more attention to both aspects of your life. Job changes continue to loom, but there is nothing to worry about. August is a good month for creating budgets so plan your finances well.

foretell ...

LIBRA You’re back to good old charming self this month, dear Libra. New responsibilities are coming to light and you’re raring to go. You have just the right combination of natural charm and confidence that others cannot help but take notice. The month is pleasurable in many ways; quick getaways, lots of ‘metime’ and laurels at work. But do not let the good things make you complacent. Continue working hard and reaping the rewards as well. SCORPIO It’s work all the way this month for Scorpions as they take charge on the job, pick up responsibilities and duties with gusto and above all, feel good about what you’re doing. Work is competitive but you might find that

AQUARIUS August is the time to take a backseat and let others take the spotlight for a change. During this time, it’s more likely that you are looking back for the time being, rather than pushing forward. There’s no need to worry about it as ruminations are also good. Exciting changes are on the horizon and this is a good period for thinking what you want from life. PISCES It’s all about trying to prove yourself this month, dear Pisces. The focus is on added responsibilities both at work and at home. Work is especially busy though there may be some power plays to deal with. You may also enjoy a profound connection and deepening of ties with a special someone. Financial matters may be stressful this month, so plan your budget wisely.
